The series has been a really wonderful and beautiful tale. Hence, let us embrace the very last episode of the season. Hopefully we will get to see a new season very soon in a year or two. Let me go on with the introduction for the last episode.

As Ryuuki finally makes his way back to the palace, the little things that he has been escaping will be back in full throttle. Ryuuki has to face the music. Will a revitalized and refocused emperor of Saiunkoku be able to handle this? How will the last episode wrap up the conclusion for the second season?

Episode summary

Tantan and Ensei are discussing about how everyone is letting Shuurei do what she wants. That will cause her to be alone forever. Ensei tells Tantan to tell Seiran, but Tantan says he does not want to be attacked by Seiran. Tantan also realizes that Ensei likes Shuurei, and Ensei praises Tantan for being perceptive. Shuuei, on the other hand, is thinking about Shusui. Jyuusan-Hime is thinking of Shun as she dumps the eye patch into the water. Ryuuren appears and Jyuusan-hime talks about how Ryuuren stopped the heavy rain. Assuming that Jyuusan-hime is asking him to play again, he does obligingly. Shuuei is thinking how Ryuuren is not a bonus prize to take away (given by his triplet brothers), but a very unlucky charm.

Yuushun and Seiran comes to pick up Ryuuki, with Ryuuki apologizing for his selfishness. He asks if he is too late, but Yuushun simply tells him to work hard together. Seiran also eyes Shuuei critically. Seiran says that Shuuei has no shame at all by returning and says that there might be a possibility that a scenario like this may happen again. Shuuei says he has decided to follow Ryuuki, abandoning his Ran clan and swears upon the flower of the emperor. That impresses Seiran, as he shows his respect with a smile. Tantan also reports that Shuurei did enter Jiuzhaigou despite his objection. When Tantan walks past, Seiga says he’s an idiot. Tantan says he is, but he will never do something like that for Seiga.

Shuurei gives Kouki his food explaining that it is only available in Jiuzhaigou. Kouki reminds Shuurei that she will be dismissed if she enters Jiuzhaigou, and Shuurei asks what Tantan says to him. Shuurei asks whether Kouki uses Tantan’s father as ransom to observe her, and Kouki says he did. He also tells Shuurei that Tantan is willing to be dismissed for Shuurei. Shuurei tries to argue, but Kouki says it is normal for a subordinate to take the rap for a superior. He also tells Shuurei that he approved it and Tantan is probably leaving right now. Shuurei is flabbergasted, and gives chase. Kouki, after seeing Shuurei leave, wonders whether Seiga (who betrays everyone) and Shuurei (who helps everyone) will rise to the top.

Tantan is thinking how Shuurei will be angry, but knows that she will not make the same mistake. Shuurei makes it in time, and reminds him about the loan she gave him. Tantan promises to return, and Shuurei promises that she will become a good official and find him back. In fact, Tantan is not dismissed, but is given a raise as a proper investigative officer. Tantan’s father mentions that it is good so that they can enjoy a farming life. Anjun says the king is impressive to return from the Hyou temple, and talks about the myth of the Hyou clan. Ouki says it’s merely a myth. Anjun says his plan to hurt Shuurei did not work as Shuurei gets Ryuuki back. Ryuuki is also informed that Ouki is behind this.

Yuushun suspects it is the ten clauses they have set and says that it is his fault. Ryuuki argues that Yuushun is simply doing it for Ryuuki. Yuushun says it is probably from the time where the previous emperor exterminated many noble clans. Yuushun also informs that the news on Ryuuki’s trip to Jiazhaigou is leaked. Ryuuki apologizes for being a coward when the throne needs him, and he wants to be a king from his experience in Jiuzhaigou. He asks Yuushun whether he is willing to follow the king. The determination shown from Ryuuki’s eyes tells Yuushun that Ryuuki is serious and he says he will follow Ryuuki to the end of the world.

In the throne room, there are murmurs about Ryuuki’s trip, and how it is inappropriate. People notice that Ryuuki’s eyes are very different from before. Ryuuki stares at Ouki in a battle of eyes, but neither backed down. Ensei is with Shuurei and Shouka, as Shuurei tells him to study for the imperial examination. Ensei says that he can stick with Shuurei, but Shuurei says that he has to study to help Ryuuki. Shouka also agrees. Shuurei says Ryuuren can help in studying. Strangely, Ryuuren appears and says that he can help lost people as he blows his flute. Ryuuki looks somewhat relieved from the ordeal. Shuuei and Seiran comes in, saying that the emperor has a lot of support.

Kouyuu somehow finds his way here. He explains that he finishes all the work worth a hundred years and tells Reishin that he needs to take a walk. Kouyuu is glad Shuuei is back. The others also gives Ryuuki support, with Shouka saying that he will make tea for all. Seiran asks if that is not enough support. Ryuuki says he will never be lost, and he will be a king all the way. Shuurei notices that Ryuuki is looking at her intensely. At night, Ryuuki and Shuurei meet. Ryuuki apologizes for his many mistakes, and thanks Shuurei for picking him up. Ryuuki says he hears from Shuuei that Shuurei cried for him. Shuurei tries to deny it profusely, but Ryuuki looks amused.

Ryuuki admits that he can no longer be king for Shuurei. He says he does not understand about the citizens, but he wants to be a worthy king for all. He says that he needs to marry and will bring Jyuusan Hime in. He says that the other person that he trusts with the back palace is Jyuusan Hime, and she is the only one he will marry other than Shuurei. Shuurei is shocked at the revelations. Ryuuki says he will marry since it is part of being an emperor to stabilize, and he cannot wait for Shuurei. Shuurei looks troubled and Ryuuki says that he is glad he has a chance.

Ryuuki says that he will have a competition. If Shuurei is about to escape by a given time, he will give up on her. If Shuurei is to accept his marriage proposal by that time, Ryuuki will win. Shuurei smiles and accepts it. Both of them laughed as Shuurei asks about the time period. Ryuuki simply moves close to his ear, whispering something that cannot be heard. We then see a glimpse of the main characters doing their work as the show ends.

Thoughts

The end is here. It is really depressing to make an entry knowing that the next season for a wonderful series such as Saiunkoku Monogatari will be a very long time away. Nevertheless, I think that the episode ends it off on a very beautiful catch. Here are some of the scenes that really makes me realize why I like Saiunkoku Monogatari. The first thing is the faith of Yuushun. No matter how much Ryuuki falters in his job as an emperor, Yuushun is unwaivering despite anyone’s protests. Even his best friend, Reishin, cannot change his mind. That is a true sign of a minister that is willing to wait for change.

Another thing is Ryuuki. In the end of the first season, he is simply trying to get Shuurei’s attention. I feel that it is a very good shift in terms of him gaining favor in the romance part of his life. In the end of the second season, he has finally developed into an emperor that knows what he should be doing, and not living his life to impress her. He truly wants to be king, but he has not lost himself completely. He still loves Shuurei very much, and is trying to give himself some time to make Shuurei his empress.

That is true maturity. He knows that he has to get what he wants, but he is willing to set a time to end it all and make changes to sacrifice his own self. Of course, for most of us, we want him to be with Shuurei. Jyuusan Hime and Ryuuki is not a poor alternative though, and even Ryuuki says that he will marry Jyuusan Hime if Shuurei does not agree to be with him by the end of the challenge. I really cannot wait for this to come on a new sequel.

One last thing is the animosity between Seiran and Shuuei. I am glad that Seiran finally accepts Shuuei. I have a feeling that Shuuei’s reluctance to choose a side makes him a complete liability, and Seiran is one that does not mince his words. Shuuei, despite his lack of the Ran clan, definitely has Ryuuren’s support. It is clear that Ryuuren’s support is very important since he is the talent of the Ran clan. Kouyuu also shows his insistence to be faithful to both Reishin and Ryuuki. He is truly a man, despite his inability to figure out his directions. Heh heh.

Anyway, let me end the review with a thank you to all the visitors who have used this blog extensively for summaries and discussion. I will miss many of you who comments and have discussions about almost anything under the sun. Yes, I am sometimes guilty of not replying due to evil work life, but I am sure you will forgive me. I am really glad because Saiunkoku Monogatari brings one of the hugest share of visitors for THAT Anime Blog. Thank you all for making these blog entries a total success. Other than that, wait for the podcast on Saiunkoku Monogatari from me and my girlfriend, Thirteensugars. I am very sure you will love it.

Once again, have fun and thank you. I hope that you will still visit us after the next season with our coverage of the spring anime season. BYE!

In the previous episode, Shouka went on to break the mirror, causing a huge shaking of the Earth. It seems that the release of the spirits is imminent and everyone has to escape quick before they are engulfed by this malicious evil. Will the island burn down from the impending doom of the area, or will someone be able to calm the spirits down? After the expected rescue of Ryuuki, this episode goes on to wrap up the current season. It is time to get ready for a formal farewell for this series, at least until the next season comes in a near or far future.

Let’s enjoy the latest episode summary!

Episode summary

Shusui ran to the inner room of the shrine as she realizes that the mirror is broken. As she reached the room, she saw Ensei carrying Shuurei. Despite Ensei explaining that he is not the one who broke the mirror, Shusui insists he did and says that he did it because he did not know about the mirror. Shusui is able to bind the spirits by playing the er hu played by the Hyou ancestor and calm the mountain down. Shusui tells Ensei to escape now. Shuuei asks Ryuuren whether he has any way to calm down the heavy rain, as Ryuuren calms the rain down with his flute. Even Shuurei is awake from the sound of the terrible flute.

Tantan is worried as the rope holding the boat is about to break. He also wonders how Ryuuki is able to handle the pressure since he is about the same age. Shuurei and the others finally arrived, as Ryuuki caught a fever and started talking gibberish about mushrooms sitting on pandas. Shuuei also roughly handles Shusui to the boat. Shuuei decides to return for Jyuusan Hime, only for Shun to carry her back. Shuuei is impressed that he can subdue Jyuusan Hime. Shun says that it’s good that Shusui came here, and warns Shuuei about not letting this “weak current” kill them. Shun kicks the boat away and the rope breaks. Shusui suddenly jumps back to the shore.

Shusui says she will not return, as Shuuei mumbles that he will return one day. Shusui tells Shouka that she will not run away and will not return with him. Shouka warns about the dire consequences of returning to Ruka, but Shusui replies that she does not want to run away. Shouka says he can still protect her. Shusui says that escaping is painful and thanks Shouka for picking her up. Back at the Ran residence, Shuuei wakes up to have a bet with his three brothers. If he loses, he will follow the will of his brothers. Before he can continue, the triplets agree to the bet but say that they have never lost the bet before.

Shuurei wakes up to see Shouka a little sad. He explains it is due to his children being independent now and tells her to sleep. It is then Shuurei realizes Shouka should not be here. He explains that Ryuuki brings him here. As she questions more, Shouka explains that he is saved by the “black wolf”. Shuurei asks if Shouka saw the “black wolf”, as he murmurs his way through. That left Shuurei puzzled. Shuurei goes over to Ryuuki, and his fever drops. Ryuuki then woke up to see Shuuei. Ryuuki feels pathetic that he left Shouka and Jyuusan to climb the mountain, but Shuuei says that is always the case. Shuuei then goes on to explain about Jyuusan Hime and Jin.

Shuurei goes to Jyuusan Hime, with Tantan and Ensei note keepers. Shuuei says that Jyuusan Hime tries to save Shun then by getting through the maze by herself. In Jyuusan-hime’s room, Jyuusan-hime tries to explain more but Shuurei says she is not interested. It is not that she is trying to protect her. Shuurei thought in her mind that the head of Ran will never decide on something that will cause them danger, so there is someone at the high rank to adopt Jin as “Shun”. She wonders if it’s Sun or Ouki, but knows that she cannot be rash when she is uncertain. It is a huge accusation of a crime to allow a death row prisoner to escape illegally.

Shuurei explains that if she is the officer in charge of Jin’s case, she will follow the law and not listen to anyone’s request. However, she will try to appeal for a lesser sentence for Jin or the girl he saves. She believes in a world of equality. Tantan and Ensei agrees on her decision. Jyuusan-hime apologizes as Shuurei says it’s just a scenario. Shuuei says that he told Ryuuki about this since he is going to marry Jyuusan-hime. On the way to the forest, Ryuuki requests Shuuei to return with him, in the role of an emperor. He wants a companion, not a friend. He promises to be a good king, and wants Shuuei’s eternal loyalty. Ryuuki appeals for Shuuei to choose the king, since he chose Shuuei.

Shuuei explains that he has been kicked out of his family, as he won in the bet where he has to differentiate the three. Shuuei explains that the Ran clan does not believe in Ryuuki, and he can no longer wield the power of the Ran clan. Ryuuki does not care since he comes simply to get Shuuei. Shuuei is shocked that Ryuuki is fine with that, and Ryuuki asks if Shuuei wants something in return comically. Shuuei laughs at Ryuuki, and says he will reply by his sword. As Ryuuki attacks, Shuuei easily repels Ryuuki’s sword. Ryuuki cannot believe Shuuei’s strength and says it is impossible. Shuuei says that Ryuuki is very impolite and says that he will only lose to the Black and white general.

Ryuuki cannot believe this, but Shuuei replies that he does not use his true ability learned from the Shiba clan. Hence, Ryuuki saw this part of Shuuei that is rarely seen. Shuuei says that he will no longer simply go along with Ryuuki, but will accompany Ryuuki if he just wants a short journey. Shuuei says the handkerchief has a flower to replace the flower of trust he returns, and adds that it is Yuushun’s idea. Ryuuki explains that in the chess match last summer, Yuushun predicts that if Shuuei gets serious and beats Ryuuki in chess, Shuuei will return. Ryuuki says it is exactly what Yuushun says, as Ryuuki gives Shuuei’s sword back to him. Shuuei says that he will faithfully follow Ryuuki eternally and be an useful “sword”. Shuuei also gives the records that Shuurei needs at night. Shuuei asks if Shuurei knows that Shuuei will return to Ryuuki. Shuurei says that she believes in personal will, and will not persuade someone who has decided. However, if Ryuuki asks her to bring him back, she will do anything to get Shuuei back. The next day, everyone is on their way to the capital, with Ryuuren on the helm.

Thoughts

I am absolutely surprised at the amount of detail that the anime puts in the series. Who would have thought that the handkerchief given by Ryuuki actually has such a meaning. Moreover, the chess game really tells a lot about the motives of a person, since the will to win Never in my wildest dreams will I think of such a complicated, yet simple way to bind the heart of your subordinate by giving him the trusted flower after he gives it back to you. Yuushun is definitely a omnipresent person, with a keen eye for details and politics. Ryuuki is really super lucky to convert this former hater of the capital to a trusted aide.

I am also glad for Ryuuki as he finally understands his position and the reason he came here. With or without his power as the Ran clan (even though it is a very useful surname), Ryuuki realizes that he needs someone that will be faithful to him no matter what. Ran Shuuei is a very competent general even without his family rank and will be someone that can protect Ryuuki easily. With Yuushun as the political support and Shuuei the physical/mental support, Ryuuki has two pillars of strength that will allow him to fully manifest his ability as an emperor.

Is anyone not surprised at Ryuuren doing that flute-blowing trick to calm down the heavy rain? I know I ain’t because I know that Ryuuren is definitely someone special to be considered the “talent” of the Ran clan. I am amused how badly he blew the flute even when it is actually the solution. I guess even the heavens are fearful of his flute blowing skills and is begging him to stop by ending the rain. I also like how he looks without the strange turban because he is actually quite boyish looking. I do not want to know how he is going to help everyone get to the capital in three times the speed. Poor Shuurei and company.

Is it just me but I am quite surprised how Shouka did not cover his tracks to answer Shuurei. Considering how he is the black wolf, he definitely should be able to smoke up some ridiculous lie that can trick Shuurei. However, my answer will be that Shouka simply acts by instinct with his rescue of Shuurei and did not bother about the consequences of being questioned by Shuurei. I really laugh at Shouka’s helplessness with Shuurei when he makes a stupid reason after another. Who says that the Black Wolf is invincible now?

I will leave everyone with a question about Shusui. She finally decides not to “run away”, which seems to be a consistent theme with Ryuuki. Do you think she should have left with Shouka, or she did the right thing to end all matters? I personally do not know or have the answer. Enjoy!

For a short recap, Ryuuki collapsed right in front of the temple from exhaustion and the high altitudes. What will happen when Shuurei and co finally reaches the temple? What will Shun and Shusui do as well, considering that they are already inside? Who is Ruka?

The journey of Ryuuki is about to begin. It is the journey to be a true king.

Ryuuren brought Shuurei and co through a shortcut to the Hyou temple, even though it nearly killed them since it involved sailing down a waterfall. In the aftermath, everyone is drenched as Ryuuren went to a nearby spring to warm up. Ensei realizes Shun has appeared, but Shun says that he is bringing Shuurei to Hyou temple. The two are not allowed. Shuurei instructed Ensei and Tantan to find the food that Kouki wants, and asks Shun if it is all right if they roam to the temple. Shun says his instructions are merely to bring Shuurei up, so it is fine.

The two are wondering what they will do, and eventually decide to follow behind Shuurei. Shuurei wonders about the jade color of the water. Shun explains that the soil in the area is different and it might be a pigment in the water. There is also no fish due to the soil, and that nothing can survive. Shuurei asks whether Shun is Shiba Jin, but he says Shuurei got the wrong person. Shuurei looks relieved and says it’s all right. They finally reach the temple, and Shuurei saw Ryuuki lying down behind a caged gate. She is initially in shock over Ryuuki’s prone body, but cries in relief when she realizes Ryuuki is still alive.

Shusui came from behind to assault Shuurei. Shuurei feels the same power during the cult arc as Shuurei slumps onto the ground. When Ryuuki woke up, Shusui explains that she is using the body of Shusui, but she is really Ruka, Riou’s elder sister. She asks Ryuuki to quit the throne, since he did not want to be the king. She also saw how horrible he felt (during the recap) for shirking from responsibility. She says that Ryuuki is not fit to be a king, since he abandoned everything to be here. That is why he lost all faith from his officers because he chose to be king simply for Shuurei. She questions what kind of king he wants to be, and berates him for running away.

Ruka continues to add that Ryuuki should abandon his role as king and pursue Shuurei wholeheartedly. She laughs hysterically and tells Ryuuki that there are better candidates. Eventually, Ryuuki mumbled no before saying affirmatively that he will become king. Even though he runs away this time, he will try his best to be king by being here to affirm his credentials. Ryuuki says he wants to return as a king when he goes to the capital. He will always be a king until the day he dies. Shuuei came in, saying that Ryuuki spoke well and understood his words. Ruka ordered Shusui and Shun to kill Ryuuki, since imperial rules do not run in here. Ruka’s spirit went out of Shusui, and Shuuei says he has been watching Ryuuki during his travels and saw Shun carrying Ryuuki to the temple.

Shuuei says that Shuurei is here and is watching Ryuuki when he collapsed. A brainwashed Shusui got up and chased Shuuei who is carrying Ryuuki. Jyuusan-hime stopped a blow by Shusui when she is about to hit Ryuuki. Ryuuki warns Shuuei not to hurt Shusui and asks him to use the power of love. In a desperate measure, he shouts out Shouka’s name as Shusui wavers. Everyone laughs at Shuuei for his lack of pride and image for saying such a shameful thing. Shuuei argues that there is nothing else better, and slaps Shusui to wake her up. Shusui says it hurts angrily and Shuuei says he will take responsibility. She then says she does not need it and just wants to hit him back.

It is then that Shusui realizes the presence of Ryuuki. Ryuuki tells Shusui that they are finding a way out and wonders where Shuurei is. Shun informs them that Shuurei is in the inner room of this temple. Ryuuki thanks Shun for the information, and Shuuei tells Ryuuki not to thank a possible murderer. Ryuuki could not sense any killing intent from Shun though. Jyuusan-hime told them to move, and Ryuuki questions Shuuei’s decision to allow that. Shuuei says he has to think of his role as a king. In the inner room, Ruka looks on at Shuurei’s body and talks about the body running the blood of Bara-hime.

Shouka appears behind, telling her to stop. Shuuei then finds Tantan fixing the boat (not recognizing him) and tells Shuuei to bring the emperor here. Jyuusan Hime asks if Shun is here to kill the emperor (he says yes), while Shun asks if the emperor is kind. In the inner room, Shouka says that Ruka should be dead. Ruka says that Shouka’s mouth is always foul and hates her, but she will take Shuurei’s body. Shouka holds the mirror in the room, saying that he will not allow it. Back at the boat, Shuuei and Ryuuren goes back to the temple, and Shuuei tells Tantan to escape if anything happens. Ryuuki tries to help, but Tantan warns him that everyone is trying to save his life, and he is wasting everyone’s efforts by risking his life.

Jyuusan Hime tells Shun to return the eye patch as her Jin is no longer alive. Shun says he will no longer die for him. Jyuusan Hime says she will now live for herself, and Shun says that he will no longer find another better girl. Jyuusan Hime says he has no right to call Hotaru, but Shun says that it is the only name he has right now and refuses to let go of it. In the inner room, Ruka warns Shouka that breaking the mirror will force her back and release the demons. Shouka says it will only cause more work for the Hyou clan and ask her to stop complaining. Ruka says she really cannot hate Shouka for his calmness, pragmatism and doing anything for his loved one. Shouka broke the mirror as the temple starts to rumble…

Thoughts

Wow, I definitely did not see the breaking of the mirror coming. Ok, other than sarcasm aside, this episode really shows the awakening of Ryuuki, which is belated and impressive. I am so glad that Ruka really made Ryuuki despair and she is perhaps the best person in this situation to slam everything at Ryuuki. Ryuuki has been pampered way too much in his role as an emperor. Ruka really threw the gauntlet down because as I have stated in my previous entry that Ryuuki is really becoming the emperor because of Shuurei. For now, he finally realizes his own desire to be king. That can only spell good things.

Nevertheless, I am very sure that he will be struggling quite a bit. The two small situations still show how he needs to be more ruthless. The first incident is when he accuses of Shuuei of leaving his sister behind after Jyuusan-Hime requested to handle Shun herself. As much as it is logical for a man to wonder about Shuuei’s problematic decision in leaving her sister to immediate doom, it is also important to note that no one’s life is more important than Ryuuki’s life.

Everyone is here to protect him, as Tantan says, and he is happily trying to sacrifice it to save someone else. He has to know that he is the king of Saiunkoku, and officers/princesses will have to die if only to keep himself alive. Yes, I am harsh and pragmatic, but that is the way of a king. The second incident is when Tantan rightly tells him off for returning to the temple on the boat. There is honestly no point to do that, since he will be just hindering them with his weakened state. Ryuuki really needs to think before he acts. That said, as a person, he is definitely very sweet (yes, I hear you, Ryuuki fans).

The emperor is below no one in rank and hence should keep himself alive as much as he can. As much as it sounds selfish, Ryuuki should keep himself alive even if it is to sacrifice Shuurei, Shuuei or anyone at all in order to keep power. Great kings are not only benevolent but they make sure that they are always safe by keeping everyone happy. Yet, they are always ruthless to keep their stronghold alive. Ryuuki needs to learn that fast.

I spent four paragraphs talking about Ryuuki, so I will spend this last paragraph on Shusui and Shuuei. The comedy part of this episode belongs to the two, and you must really watch it to laugh. I actually laugh quite a bit because I expect some love declaration, only for Shuuei to scream out Shouka’s name. Poor Shuuei, his ego and pride is smashed open. Shouka is also extremely great with his evil eyes and harsh pragmatism. You go, Shouka-papa! Shouka is really turning to become my favorite character of Saiunkoku, behind the eccentric Ryuuren, the evil uncle Reishin and the tsundere loli Kourin.

I am really expecting a lot from the coming story, considering how all the parties in this arc are going to meet in the mystical place of Jiuzhaigou, a place of mysterious origins and myths. However, I am pretty much disappointed. This episode is a recap of the experiences that Ryuuki has been dealing with ever since the first day he becomes king. I didn’t expect them to throw in a recap at this time and hence it will not be a full summary. I wonder how they will end the second season of this series though, with so few episodes left. I hope they do not leave me hanging, and everyone else too.

However, I will take the opportunity to discuss about Ryuuki’s reign as a king since it is the focus for this recap episode.

Story gist

As Ryuuki ventures alone to the wilderness in order to find the Hyou shrine, he realizes that he is completely lost. Tired and exhausted, he is unable to fish as there are no fishes in the lake. Moreover, starting a fire is also hard as he dozes off on the hardened mud. He starts to dream about his first meeting with Shuurei, where Shuurei tells him that she is here to support him as an official that will never waver. We then see the experience of Shuurei’s kidnapping, and subsequently about Ryuuki’s family abuse when he is merely a child.

The recap then reveals the Sa province arc, where Ryuuki fights hard to allow women to take the imperial exam. He also hears Shuurei battling against the dissidents of female officers. Ryuuki also shows the reluctance to let Shuurei leave for Sa province as a co-governor with Eigetsu, but eventually allows it despite the fact that Shuurei will be distancing from him. While he thinks of these things, a few resident pandas start to listen to Ryuuki’s story. He also remembers how he has to punish Shuurei as a compensation for the powerful forces that are against Shuurei’s rash actions.

Lastly, he remembers how he cannot even answer Riou Jr’s answer whether he came to this place as the emperor or simply as Ryuuki. He realizes that he run away from trouble despite knowing it. He hates doing so, and decides that he is going up to the Hyou’s shrine as the emperor of Saiunkoku. He finally resolved his doubts and reaches the Hyou shrine. However, due to exhaustion, he finally falls at the foot of the Hyou’s shrine entrance, with Shun looking onwards.

Ryuuki – Is he a good king?

Ryuuki definitely has gone a long way since his nonchalant behavior over the ownership as an emperor. However, the answer of whether he is fit enough to be king is pretty much open to debate. One can argue that he is definitely on the road to be a king, as he is finally trying hard to be a good emperor. He also makes some good revolutionary plans such as the entrance for women, and hence opens up a window of opportunity for talented women who are interested to serve the nation. However, despite this argument, I am somewhat hard felt to say that he is a good emperor.

His handling of noble clans, and his lack of knowledge with politics among various groups of noble clans has been more than suspect. Many a times in this season, Ryuuki has been saved by Yuushun in the court. I cannot imagine the major communication blunders that will shake his reign as an emperor without Yuushun’s help all the time. Ryuuki clearly struggles to understand the dirtier side of politics, and he is too naive toward most people. It does make many viewers like him, but it’s a complete liability as an emperor, who must be able to think for himself and act when it appears that he is biased or siding certain groups.

I am not saying he cannot rely on others, but he is in the stage where he’s dependent on Yuushun to survive in Saiunkoku. His need to rely on others make him vulnerable whenever he makes a decision. His motivation to allow female applicants for the imperial exam has nothing to do with gender equality, but simply to further Shuurei’s means. He seems to think of very short-term benefits despite the fact that he probably has the capacity to think longer. He seems to be hampered by his friendships and personal feelings in decisions for the whole state.

Despite his best efforts, Ryuuki is still emotional and irrational. He often sneaks away on little campaigns that make no sense at all, such as sneaking a trip to see off Shuurei in Sa province. Another obvious situation is during this latest arc, where Ryuuki runs off looking for Shuuei and abandons his post. When Riou jr asks him his position to travel, it becomes apparent that even though he does want to get Shuuei, it is clearly his fear of authority and responsibility as an emperor.

With his intelligence, he clearly knows that there is a huge plot revolving around the palace. It is slowly forming with the conspiracies of the salt situation, the paintings and the assassination of Jyuusan Hime. Everything is done to gain leverage and cause the emperor to lose all contact with the two major clans that can save his throne. He is getting isolated, and instead of doing something to stop this growing pain, he runs away. It is good that he finally realizes his mistake, but it might be too late if this is a real life situation.

Yet, all of this will probably change. Do you agree with my assessment, despite being a bit biased against Ryuuki?

The meeting is close. In the previous episode, Tantan, Ensei and Shuurei are traveling to the main city of the Ran province in order to find out where Ryuuki is going. However, they do not realize that Ryuuki is going to Jiuzhaigou under the direction of Jyuusan Hime and the protection of Shouka. Yet, an important story about the definition of a king in Saiunkoku will be revealed in Jiuzhaigou, and only one that can assume the story as reality can be truly a king in this world. Will Ryuuki go for it?

Today’s entry is a bit late as the blog went down and I did not get the episode until very late today. Gomen nai!

Episode summary

Tantan is still recovering from the severe waves, while we see Ryuuki thinking in sadness. Back in the palace, Reishin tells Yuushun to quit his job and says that Ryuuki has no right to work above him and does not realize the danger he is putting Yuushun is. Yuushun says the trip is to calm Ryuuki’s nerves. The angry Reishin Reishin warns that Ryuuki might not come back if he enters Jiuzhaigou, and Yuushun says he will wait. Ryuuki remembers the words by Hyou Jr when he declares his trip, and feels that he should be happy gaining freedom. However, he feels so terrible because he realizes that he has been running away, unlike Shuurei who always tries to fight.

Ryuuki hates how he abolishes all responsibilities to Yuushun and does not deserve to be king. He wonders if he can still return as king. Shuurei is playing the er hu and suddenly murmurs that Ryuuki might be crying. Tantan asks whether Ensei knows why Tantan decides to join this trip, and says that he is a commoner that will not agree with Shuurei on everything. Ensei says that it is nothing bad and Tantan can be objective enough to fully utilize Shuurei’s strengths. Tantan says that he will leave Shuurei to Ensei and Seiran after this mission. As they reached the Ran province, it is definitely more beautiful than the capital.

Buuchuu, the Ran province’s governor, came to pick Shuurei up. Buuchuu says that she is the next investigative officer after Seiga to come to this province. Seiga came to check on Shiba Jin. Shuurei tells Buuchuu to search for Ryuuki and Buuchuu asks Shuurei to stay here. Buuchuu instructs his officers to find Ryuuki in a discrete manner. When his officer asks why Ryuuki is leaving the capital at this time, Buuchuu has no answer, only stating that he did not expect Ryuuki to be so incompetent. Shuurei instructs Ensei to research on the salt and Tantan on the personnel in this province. Ensei says he understands and Tantan is surprised how an idiot-looking Ensei figures things out so quickly. Ensei says that he is an idiot just as Tantan, but has the experience as a governor to rely on.

Shuurei is looking on information about Shiba Jin. Shiba Jin surrendered at 21 after killing his father, but was judged in the province instead of the capital for such a crime. Shuurei realizes that the Ran clan is trying to protect Jin. When Shuurei checks the report, she realizes it is written by Sun, the governor himself and the investigative officer who came to check is Ouki. Jyuusan Hime woke up from a nightmare about Jin and points the sword at Ryuuki’s neck. She apologizes profusely for pointing a sword at Ryuuki, and Ryuuki says he is concerned after hearing her murmur. She asks what she said during her nightmare, and he says that she murmurs something about Jin. She admits that Jin is the person she is in love with.

Jyuusan Hime says she met Jin when she is just three, when her mother was murdered. Jyuusan Hime tried to protect her mother’s corpse, and they stared at each other for three days and three nights. Jin asks how Jyuusan Hime will relax, and Jyuusan Hime says he had to remove his eye. He did to one and is about to do to his other eye but Jyuusan Hime stops him. Jin is supposed to kill Jyuusan Hime by his father’s instructions, but finds refuge with the Ran clan. Jin eventually proposes to marry her when she is sixteen, saying that she is the only one that she will marry. However, everything ends when Jin kills his father supposedly from protecting Jyuusan Hime. Jyuusan Hime says that liking someone does not guarantee happiness, and told Ryuuki to follow his heart.

When they reached a place for camp, Jyuusan Hime says that they will reach Jiuzhaigou tomorrow. Ryuuki is surprised that Shuuei stays there and he is notified earlier that it is inauspicious for Ryuuki to go there. Jyuusan Hime says that they have to climb up Ryumin Mountain to get to Shuuei. At the other side is the sacred temple of Ryou clan. Ryuuki remembers the story that every descendant of royalty will attempt to climb the hill. Those we return are able to make the country prosper, while many did not return. Only a true king can reach the peak and that king is considered by the immortals to be the true descendant.

Jyuusan Hime adds that the place is like a maze, but the Ran brothers never get lost there. She added that anyone who reaches the temple will have their wishes granted but many who tried to sneak there never reached it. Ryuuki murmured about the wish. The next day, Jyuusan Hime found herself alone. Shuuei also realizes that Ryuuki is coming over. Yuki came over and asks whether Shuuei must go even if he objects. It is clear that Shuuei will abandon the Ran clan in order to protect Ryuuki who is destined to come to Jiuzhaigou. He says that he will support Ryuuki no matter whether his family disagreed. Yuki says he is not ready to give Shuuei to the immature king, but Shuuei says they will discuss this when he gets back. Yuki informs that the shrine maiden at the temple is Shusui.

Shuurei realizes that Jin is probably protected by someone powerful, in order for him to be alive. Shuurei also is notified that Ryuuki went to Jiuzhaigou. Shuurei promptly decides to go over, and Ensei and Tantan agrees to follow her. Tantan is worried of the course, but Shuurei says she has to do anything to protect the king. Buuchuu, as he sees Shuurei leaving, says that Shuurei will be a wonderful officer because she is the type that will not let any citizens suffer despite their foolishness at customs and superstitions, just like Ouki. He says that great officers will lay their lives for their king, and the king will grow to be important. Ryuuren eventually joins the three to Jiuzhaigou, while Ryuuki straggles along to the hill alone.

Thoughts

I definitely did not expect how Jin kills his father. I mean, he definitely looks like a very honorable person and the way he got together with Jyuusan Hime is very similar to Shouka. Both of them are ordered to kill the person they love, but eventually falls in love with them. In fact, Jin clearly does not attack Jyuusan Hime at all, and it is apparent that he is still in love with the woman. However, the biggest surprise is the implication that Jyuusan Hime is nearly raped by Jin’s father, which is why Jin kills his father. Considering that the Shiba Clan is a close kin of the Ran clan, I cannot believe why his father will do that.

To usurp the big clan? To leverage for his own noble clan? There is no answer right now but shock is definitely there because Jyuusan Hime now blames herself for taking away everything from Jin. Circumstances are really realistic for the two lovers who are separated by life. I doubt they will ever be together, but I hope that Jyuusan Hime does not keep blaming herself for the situation. It’s clearly not her fault and she looks like the type of person that puts all the blame onto herself and carries the burden alone. That, in a way, sounds like Shuurei.

We also see the development of Ryuuki as an emperor that finally realizes how childish he is in governing and managing his empire. As much as he does all right for the day to day things, he carries out such a silly trip when there is a clear uprising brewing in the future. He then leaves Yuushun alone, vulnerable to attacks. Ryuuki finally realizes the key issue that he is escaping from reality, running away whenever he is faced with a major issue. He knows that, and I hope that he can survive the trip up to the sacred temple to the Hyou clan. He will be a good king and he just has to grow up. Fast.

Ouki is a very interesting entity. We know from the previous episodes that he is interested to be king. Yet, he seems to be a benevolent officer that simply wants the citizens to be well. I am not sure if he is misguided by the incompetency shown by Ryuuki, or the fact that Ryuuki does not yet have the true air of a good emperor. I have a feeling that we might see the good of Ouki in the future if Ryuuki proves his mettle in this arc. I do not know, but Ouki does not have that malicious feeling that most villains have. He seems to care about many people, and simply is disillusioned at Ryuuki.

Lastly, I fully appreciate the presence of Tantan lately. He is perhaps one of the most average people, yet one that is the most objective. He calls himself an idiot, but I feel that despite his lack of insane intelligence, he has a very calm mind that thinks and is blunt with his comments. He does not prevent himself from saying some terrible things if he thinks it will help the situation. The most important thing is that it usually does, and he works well quietly with efficiency. He is definitely a very important presence to bring the best of Shuurei.

Yes, I have omitted all real mention of Shuurei in this thought section. Care to wonder why?

Just before anyone worries whether there will be a new episode next week, Episode 35 will be showing. However, as next week is the Chinese New Year, I might be somewhat delayed with the entries since I will be busy celebrating the festival. Nevertheless, this episode is perhaps much more straightforward exercise after the pretty complicated episodes lately. This week, everyone in the capital is starting to travel to the Ran territory in pursuit of Shuuei. Yet, the name of Jiuzhaigou is a recurring word. What is in this beautiful lake?

Episode summary

Ensei saw the rather depressed Shuurei, as Shuurei asks him to forsake his examination this time and join her party to Ran province. Ensei agrees readily, and Shuurei is surprised. Ensei says that he is studying for the examination not working in the central area, and says that it is Shuurei not Yuushun that needs him. When Shuurei continues to ramble on, Ensei says that Shuurei should just thank him nicely and gives her a chance to ask properly. Ensei realizes that she is hiding something about the mission, and eventually Shuurei asks him to join. Ensei also realizes that Shuurei is working too hard and is not getting enough sleep. Ensei warns her that the physical condition of the body is important and knocks her out.

Ensei tells Seiran that Shuurei needs to rest as Dark Seiran says that he will kill Ensei for this. Ensei and Seiran discusses about Kouki’s attempt to recruit Ensei and asks why Seiran is always having such a serious face. He says it’s his instinct around such a lax Ensei and tells Ensei to protect Shuurei. Ensei tells Seiran that he no longer supports Shuurei x Seiran, and he has to be protective over the woman he deems important. Ensei warns him that his rival in “love” is not only Ryuuki but even the likes of him possibly if Seiran is not careful.

The next day, Yuushun and Seiran sent off Jyuusan-Hime, Ryuuki and Jyuusan Hime. Seiran initially questions why Shouka is there but realizes that Ryuuki asks of it from the rather sad look on Ryuuki’s face. Kouki instructs Shuurei to go now to protect Ryuuki, and he says that the king never informs about his purpose. Kouki also asks Shuurei to check on Shiba Jin, as he tells about how Shiba Jin kills his father when he is 21 years old. Shuurei says that he should be dead five years ago, but Kouki tells that Shuurei is the one investigating the “spirits of the prison”. Kouki asks her to see if it is someone from the Ran clan who let him go in the recent assassination, and it is clear Kouki wants to reduce the power of the two major clans.

Kouki tells her that he hopes that she never returns, and Shuurei says that she will DEFINITELY be back and asks what local food he wants. Kouki tells her to buy the double egg yolk duck eggs, seasonings and monkey head mushroom in the mountains. Kouki also tells Shuurei not to follow Ryuuki into Jiuzhaigou. Shuurei, Suou Shin and Ensei sets off and Tantan suddenly tells Ensei to fasten the path. Tantan’s father came over to bring some food for the trip as Shuurei stops the carriage. Tantan’s mother also came hidden behind a wall as Tantan’s father wished Tantan well for his job, and promises to work hard in order to return the cash to Shuurei.

Ensei remarks how Tantan has a good father. Near Jiuzhaigou, Shin murmured how he is back here, as Shusui looks to be struggling. They talked about the seal, and Shusui says that the implement of a seal should allow Shin to control her. Shin says he is not part of the Hyou clan and he is coerced into bringing Shusui to Jiuzhaigou. Shusui tells of the tale by the first ancestor of Hyou clan, who uses a magical mirror to hold the 108demons. Eventually, the demons broke the barrier of the mirror but the ancestor is able to entrap the demons using her er hu. As such, the demons are hence transformed into the lake and are trapped within.

Shusui says that since she is commanded to go there by Ouka, she rather go willingly with Shin rather than forced. When they reached the place, Shusui feels the seal once again as she tells Shin to kill her if she turns uncontrollable. Shusui also reaches Jiuzhaigou, where the mansion of the Ran clan is, a little known fact. Ryuuren met Shuuei at the gate, as Ryuuren said “welcome back”. It surprises Shuuei as Eigetsu and Shuurei must have trained him well. Shuuei tells Ryuuren not to intervene as it is his problem. Ryuuren informed Shuuei that Yuki is not here but Gyoku, his wife, is here. Shuuei tries to run away but Gyoku invites Shuuei in.

Shuuei professed to tell all the dark secrets of Ryuuren to Shuurei and Eigetsu for allowing him to face Gyoku. Shuuei says that nothing has changed in this mansion as he sees a flashback of Gyoku and him. Gyoku invites him to eat breakfast, and he enjoys the sweet egg roll. Gyoku remembers how Shuuei describes her as a sweet egg roll, and Shuuei says that Yuki says that too. Gyoku says that Yuki says it to make fun of her. It seems that Gyoku initially is the new concubine for Shuuei’s father, but eventually married Yuki. Gyoku added that they always quarrel, and Yuki always complain about Gyoku hanging out with Shuuei. Shuuei also realizes that Yuki is actually jealous of Shuuei and knows that Yuki works hard to get Gyoku. Gyoku also says that she is very fortunate, as Shuuei’s heart seems to be relieved somewhat.

Gyoku talks about Shuuei’s loved one as she sees the fan from Shusui. Shuuei asks about whether any shrine maidens from the Hyou clan have visited the shrine. Yuki’s absence is to meet someone from the Hyou clan. Shuuei tells Gyoku to inform him of anything that happens in the capital. Tantan is seasick as Ensei knocks Tantan out and ties him to the deck. The sailors start to put human-shaped buns into the water, as it is explained that the currents are wild. They initially feed human sacrifices, but an officer says it’s dumb to sacrifice humans and says that buns are good enough. As the currents continue to be wilder, Shuurei, Ensei and Tantan readies themselves.

Thoughts

Wow, one of the most interesting thoughts that arrived is actually near the very start of the show. Unless I translated it completely wrong, it seems that Ensei is not counting out the fact that he might be considering Shuurei to be an “important” person. I mean, the way that Ensei is implying with his message (adding to the fact that he talks about marriage between Seiran x Shuurei) means that Ensei might want to have a Ensei x Shuurei pairing. Oh my gosh! This is perhaps the most blatant confession by any of the guys other than Ryuuki about how they feel about Shuurei. I mean, it even gets Seiran worried sick when Ensei says that he does not support the Seiran x Shuurei marriage no more.

In a strange way, I am really happy for Tantan. Considering how much of a happy go lucky person he is, he does have a very caring father who is not a brilliant father by any means but at least one that truly cares and loves him a lot. The gesture is genuine, and of course it is always good to have the guilty mother that sends him off behind a wall. This is truly cute of a family, and I enjoy how they talk to each other.

In a way, I think that Shuuei definitely is a coward when it comes to relationships. Nevertheless, I am very sure the talk with Gyoku has given him some courage to move away from his past, considering how Gyoku humanizes Yuki. I believe I will be very surprised to hear from my sister-in-law about how Yuki actually gets antagonistic about Gyoku and Shuuei being together. Even though Yuki says it in a way that he implies that he fears Gyoku will be a bad influence to Shuuei, it is clear that Yuki just does not like the two to be together. It is good to see some emotions from one of the triplets, who seems extremely distant for the short cameos.

I now understand the mystery of Jiuzhaigou a little better, since both the Ran’s residence and the shrine of the Hyou clan are in this region. Shusui also mentions about the demons that are entrapped inside. Considering the residents around this beautiful and mystical place, it is little wonder that the officers are persuading Ryuuki not to go there. Hey, but since Shuuei will be there, it is inevitable that something dangerous might appear soon enough. One final thought must be about Kouki. I never knew he’s a food connoisseur.

However, the investigative department is not ready to let him go so easily, not when there is a link between the Ran clan and Shun. On the chasing pack of Ran Shuuei is Ryuuki, who decides to chase after Shuuei in order to get him back from the Ran clan.

Who will be with Ryuuki when he tries to get back Shuuei?

Episode summary

All the guards at the gate are completely drunk as Shuuei secures a safe passage through to Ran province with the help of Shuurei. Seiga arrives shortly after Shuuei leaves, and she says that she does not know anything about Shuuei’s escape. Seiga says it’s ok if she acts ignorance as a warrant is sent out to all gates leading to Ran clan. However, Seiga is impressed how Shuurei is able to release Shuuei, which is why Kouki considers her an equal to him. Seiga eventually taunts her, and tells her to catch up with him in his ability. She says she is not interested to catch up with her.

Ryuuki informed everyone that he is going to the Ran clan, but Riou questions the validity of his trip. Riou asks whether the trip is carried out as an emperor or as Shi Ryuuki. Riou says if the emperor is confused, his officers are also confused. However, Riou agrees that it is good for Ryuuki to think about things. The wedding officer then questions Ryuuki about Jyuusan Hime and his marriage, but Ryuuki decides quickly to bring Jyuusan Hime as it is a way to “improve their communication”. The other three clearly realizes that Ryuuki is escaping the issue. The wedding officer assumes that it is a honeymoon, and warns him not to go to the “Jiuzaigo” as it is inauspicious. Ouki also asks about the security of Ryuuki, but Shou Taishi proposes to allow “Black Wolf” to protect Ryuuki.

Koku daishogun is looking for Sun Sousho, and kicks the locked door open to find Sun lying down reading a book. Sun knows that Koku is coming due to Shuuei, and he says he will arrange for the appropriate personnel to take over duties. As Koku continues to stare at him, Sun asks what he is doing. Koku says he is transferring his feeling telepathically through his eyes. Sun says he cannot see anything from Koku’s nondescript face. Shuurei and Suou Shin are trying to eavesdrop, but is caught by Sun. Shuurei points out that the “missing” Sun is here, but Sun denies he is Sun. When Shuurei tries to challenge him, he throws a sweet into Shuurei’s mouth before Koku carries her off, warning her to forget about today. When Shuurei asks about Sun, Koku says that Sun is a remarkable man.

Kouki questions Shuurei over the visit to Sun, and tells her that if she talks about Sun lying about his “missing”, he will sack her from her job. Kouki tells her that the case is closed for her, and says that he does not work to save “pride”. Shuurei says that Kouki will be cool if he tries to save face…maybe. Shuurei says she is giving up on the case, but wants to go to Ran clan. However, the previous governor of Ran clan is Sun, and it’s clear Shuurei will investigate. Shuurei pleas Kouki, and he finally relents and allows Shuurei to investigate.

Shuurei talks to Suou Shin, and he agrees to join with Shuurei. Suou Shin’s mother returns to his father lately, and Suou Shin can trust the two to get along. Suou Shin asks about whether Seiran will be going with them, but Shuurei says it’s better for Seiran to stay. Seiran finds Ensei “studying”, and commands him to protect Shuurei. Ensei asks why Seiran is not going along, and Seiran tells Ensei that he has his role at the capital (to protect Yuushun). Ensei asks how he is going to study, but Seiran commands him to go and leaves.

Shouka is thinking about his trip to the Ran clan, and wonders how to tell Seiran and Shuurei. Ryuuki comes to Shouka, asking Shouka to join him. Shouka thought his secret is out, but Ryuuki says that he wishes for Shouka’s accompany in the trip, and a “mysterious guard” will protect them. Shouka, in his mind, knows that the mysterious guard is him. Ryuuki promises to protect Shouka if it requires, and Shouka says he will be more useful. Shouka thinks about the current situation, since he is no longer shadowing but openly following. Anjun comes to talk to Shuurei, and Shuurei is looking at the nobles in Ran clan. Shuurei tries to ask Anjun for help by giving an innocent wide smile, but Anjun refuses.

Anjun also reveals that Kouki is the only survivor in his clan, and there is a history of the previous king exterminating entire noble clans. Ouki, the boss of Anjun, is the one who takes charge of these remnant clan members. When asked how Ouki is like, Anjun simply says that Ouki has the aura of a true noble. Sun and Ouki are chatting about life, and Sun says his life philosophy is that he lives for the present. Sun asks about Ouki’s wish, and Sun says his wish is that Ouki will be king. Ouki says that he wants to sit in the throne, and Sun says he will do whatever he can to support him. Back to Anjun, he warns Shuurei not to be attracted by random people. Suou Shin is surprised that Shuurei can be tempted, and says that it might be good for Shuurei to have someone to care and share her thoughts. Shuurei says she is going to find Jyuusan Hime.

Jyuusan Hime rushes in to Ryuuki after hearing that Ryuuki is bringing her for a honeymoon trip. She hears it from Shou Taishi, and Ryuuki knows he is spreading stupid information again. Jyuusan Hime asks if Ryuuki has any plans to get Shuuei back, and Ryuuki says he will convince Shuuei with love. Jyuusan Hime tells him not to push too hard, and starts thinking that it might be worse if there is only agony when two stays together. Shuurei realizes that Jyuusan Hime is with Ryuuki and Jyuusan Hime says that the best thing is to care for the person you love. Jyuusan Hime starts to blush for saying such embarrassing things, and asks if Ryuuki is lonely. Jyuusan Hime says she will keep Ryuuki company. In front of the promised tree, Shuurei realizes that Ryuuki might not be lonely anymore in the night, and she says that it’s good even though her tone betrays her.

Thoughts

One of the key events seem to be revealing Ouki as the mastermind behind all the events in the recent few episodes, from the salt and picture incident, to the assassination of Jyuusan Hime. He admits in his chat with Sun that he wishes to sit in the throne and it is very highly likely that only a person who has a vendetta against the king (he picks up all the clan members whose clan is exterminated by the previous king). I am very surprised how they are hinting quite blatantly that Ouki might be the one behind this. They never did state explicitly about that, but it’s simply a conversation between friends.

This episode definitely returns more to the comedy side of things after some rather serious episodes lately (I am still haunted by the scary Shouka the last episode). One of the key jokes in my opinion is how the “Black Wolf aka Shouka” is asked to protect Ryuuki. Shouka is definitely surprised when Ryuuki looks for him to accompany and goes proudly that “there will be a mysterious person protecting them”. I thought that it is classic when Shouka says in his mind “it is me!”.

Seiran is also commanding in his treatment of Ensei. Sometimes, I wonder if Ensei and Seiran are in a master-slave relationship, only that the slave is somewhat nonchalant over the commands of his master. Despite the fact that Ensei really needs to study, Seiran totally does not care anything about his arguments and tell him to follow Shuurei. In a way, it can also show that Seiran fully trusts Ensei’s ability to protect Shuurei, and I think he is the only person Seiran will trust when it comes to Shuurei. It’s a clear vindication of the trust between the two, despite the sometimes horrid friendship conversations.

Shuurei also literally batters Kouki into submission with her continual insistence to deal with the investigation. I honestly laugh big time when the inflappable Kouki can be coerced of sorts to a decision, considering how harsh and mean he is generally. It definitely shows quite a bit about Shuurei when she is so persistent at getting things her way. The last key event must be the ending. It is apparent that despite the nice words that are said about Shuurei, it is probably the first time that she feels lonely and alone. The way she mentions about Ryuuki’s loneliness being alleviated by Jyuusan Hime seems to indicate a feel of wistfulness, as though she is somewhat lonely in her selfish pursuit of power.

In a brief discussion with my girlfriend on this situation, she hits it at the right spot.

Thirteen Sugars : jyuusan hime took her place?
Thirteen Sugars : OH OH right right
Thirteen Sugars : I don’t think it’s left out
Impz : now, jyuusan hime assumingly took her place (cos she heard that jyuusan hime promised to accompany ryuuki)
Thirteen Sugars : but more jealousy over the fact that Ryuuki is with someone shuurei wanted him to be with
Thirteen Sugars : and realizing that it wasn’t really a happy wish on shuurei’s behalf
Impz : ya, it’s not happy wishes
Thirteen Sugars : I do have to say I’m quite pleased
Thirteen Sugars : cause then now shuurei gets a taste of being alone and lonely at least in the terms of love
Impz : hhahaha, u are so mean
Thirteen Sugars : ’cause she always sounded so certain that she doesn’t need such things in her life -_-
Thirteen Sugars : that part of her always seemed selfish to me, not wanting to share something someone is literally begging for

What do you think?

As Shun escapes from the room, Shuurei realizes that the assassination of Mou is just part of the master mind’s plan. There has never been a change in the plans. Everyone has been so concentrated with who is behind the assassination that they have forgotten that the target of this is still…targeted. Someone is definitely pulling the strings of this rather elaborate plot, and Shun seems to have a link with the Ran clan. However, nothing is being said and the answer will be revealed in this episode.

Will Shuurei and company be in time to rescue Jyuusan Hime before it is too late?

Episode summary

Shuurei and Ensei rushed over to Jyuusan-Hime after realizing what has transpired. Shuurei also told Seiga to rush to the jail, as Suou Shin is there. Shuuei arrives where Jyuusan Hime is and says he is looking for someone. Jyuusan Hime told Shuuei that she told Ryuuki not to come over. Seiga realized that the death row prisoners are trying to rescue their kind, and is somewhat impressed that Shuurei figures this out. Shun arrived at Jyuusan Hime as Shuuei called him “Jin”. Jyuusan-Hime (Hotaru) screamed at him, and remembered how Shun gave her his name as she is like a firefly. Jyuusan-hime started to weep, saying that he should not be coming as a murderer. However, Shun said he is no longer part of the Shiba clan and Shiba Jin is dead.

Shuuei corrected him, and he said the Ran clan believed that Shiba Jin is alive. It is also why Jyuusan Hime is sent to Ryuuki. Shun said that Ryuuki actually detected Shun, but did not do anything as Shun has no murderous intent. He said Jyuusan Hime and Shuuei will be happy with such an emperor Shun also talked about Shuurei, saying that she is as energetic and intelligent like “Hotaru”. Shuuei warned him about how if a kin clan such as the Shiba clan is found to assassinate in the palace, it will implicate the Ran clan and allows others to take advantage. Shun reiterated that he is no longer Shiba Jin.

Shuuei told Shun not to talk in the way “Jin” speaks, and reminds Jyuusan-Hime that Shun is simply aiming to rescue his fellow mates who are down in this room. Shuuei and Jin starts to fight, while they taunt each other on their strength. Jyuusan-Hime is also attacked by the masked female assassin. It is clear that Jyuusan Hime is not her match, and Shun shouts at Shusui to rescue the others. However, Shusui is about to land the final blow on Jyuusan Hime before Ensei’s timing intervention stopped. When Shuurei shouted out, a clearly hypnotized Shusui had tears falling from her eyes, crying for forgiveness from Shuurei and Shouka. As Shuuei questions what happened, Shun escaped.

Shun finds Shusui fallen on the grass, only for the dark side of Shouka to appear. Shouka warns Shun to let Shusui go. Shun tells him that the “message” has been implanted in Shusui since she is born, and it will simply be a matter of time when she loses all abilities to control. She will then turn into a murderous weapon and be abused forever. Shun says that he has the confidence to stop her and it is better for Shusui to stay with him. Shouka asks why he is doing such a stupid thing, and Shun says he is surprised someone like him is questioning him about this. Shouka says that Shun is disillusioned because he is ordered to kill Jyuusan Hime (who has an engagement) but he is reluctant to do so.

Shouka also says that it is the reason why he calls Shuuei over to protect Jyuusan Hime. Shun says that he has been exposed, but insists that Shiba Jin is dead and he has something more to do. Shun asks if he can go, and Shouka tells him to take care of Shusui. Shun promises to find a way to remove the “message”. At the palace, Shuurei tells Kouki about the people who escaped execution by becoming murderers, and they are the “spirits of the jail”. Shuurei thinks about how Mou’s mouth has been shut permanently, but the assassination plot continues. This means someone else is pulling the strings.

She is about to question, but Kouki cuts her off immediately. Kouki says that the assassins probably knows nothing, and asks if the head of the assassins is related to the Ran clan. Shuurei says it’s not. Kouki asks why she is so certain and tells her that she has to mistrust anyone, even if they are family or lovers. Shuurei asks if they should mistrust him since he had the ability to string such a plot and Kouki says she should since he has a lot of experience and knows how to cause turmoil secretly. Kouki says that the case is over and tells Shuurei not to be an officer if she wants to dispute it. Shuurei left the room, unable to retort.

Seiga told Kouki that Mou, like the death row prisoners, was punished for misdeeds and asked to pick out suitable warriors for the assassination. However, someone up there has been unhappy that Mou used one of the warriors for his own use and instructed for Mou’s death. Kouki asks if Seiga wants to usurp his superiors, and Seiga says he will use more refined techniques compared to Shuurei. Kouki says Shuurei realizes about the death row prisoners, while Seiga about the disciplined officers. Kouki says that it is evenly matched. Kouki, as an afterthought, wonders how it is so similar to the “Black Wolf clan”.

Kouyuu is waiting for Shuuei to talk, and Shuuei asks about the difference of the two. Shuuei says he is part of the Ran clan since birth, while Kouyuu is not from the Kou clan. Shuuei tells Kouyuu to stay by Ryuuki’s side, and says that the two years have been extremely happy. However, things cannot stay this way. Shuuei asked to fulfill his promise. Shuuei is thinking how many times he has to hurt such a gentle emperor.and Ryuuki defeated a non-serious Shuuei. Shuuei says he no longer has the ability to protect Ryuuki and asks to leave as he returns his flower and the sword besotted to him. Ryuuki gives him the embroidery he was doing and told him to do what he wants. Ryuuki eventually decides to get Shuuei back as Yuushun supports his decision.

Thoughts

Seriously, the biggest shock for me in this episode is not really the plot, but Shouka. I am not sure if Shouka has ever saw his eyes before but I am glad that he never shows his eyes. It is downright creepy and it makes me think how dark and cold blooded Shouka can get when it comes to people that he wants to protect. I can actually feel the intimidating presence of Shouka just viewing it, and it is clear that he has not lost his touch at all. The eyes are extremely vicious, and it is clear that he cares a lot for Shusui, and that he can kill without batting an eyelid. I really hope that he does not open his eyes too much next time. It’s scary X_X.

If Shun can rival Shuuei and possibly Ensei in battle, I cannot imagine how batshit insane badass Shouka is. I mean, Shun simply cannot even move at all with the swift movement of Shouka. On a short discussion with my girlfriend, she also said candidly that it is impressive how Shuurei’s mother is able to make such a cold blooded assassin fall heads over tails with her, and persuades him not to kill him. Shuurei’s mother must have been a really persuasive speaker or charming woman.

On the plot itself, I am guessing that Shun and Jyuusan-Hime are a couple last time, but I am surprised that Shun walks out of an engagement with the person she loves. Unless I have not remembered carefully, I do not remember any scene that explains why he will walk out. That plot makes me wonder. The question for me will be to wonder how Shun is actually working for, since he must have a very interesting reason to go against his good friend Shuuei and his engaged wife. It is probably something that will be answered in the future, but it seems to be left for something else.

I must say that the relationship of Shuuei and Ryuuki gives off yaoi vibes in this episode, and I feel a bit awkward when I watch it. I mean, Saiunkoku Monogatari has a lot of bishies. However, they never really give out that much yaoi vibes. When both my girlfriend and I can feel it, that means there is definitely an intent to give some vibes. I really wonder if anyone feels that way after watching the show. I am quite sad that Shuuei has to make the tough decision to go back, but I wonder if Ryuuki is following logic by abandoning his post to get Shuuei back.

Ryuuki: “I want Ran Shuuei…”

That is perhaps the plot of the next arc.

If you are watching the Four Leaf Clover fansubs of Saiunkoku Monogatari, you might have seen the above screenshot. My name appearing in the subs came from a rather amusing story since it is something that relates to a conversation between my girlfriend (who is the encoder for the FLC subs) and me . I remember that she messaged me one day about the ED, and told me to translate it for her fansub. I am probably in a half-awake state of mind, and actually agreed to translating the ED.

Innocent like a fly, I did up the translation in a few minutes. The next thing definitely woke me up from my slumber. She started becoming the evil editor that is so anal, that you wonder if you are dating the same sweet person you know normally. Yes, if you have ever dealt with a true-blue editor, you will feel just the same way as me, which is “meh”. Anyway, I cleanly forgot about it. Recently, I helped her in some work for FLC due to her computer failing her completely. It is then I realize that my name is up there. I never thought that I will ever have my name in any subs, and I am actually doing some work as an encoder too when her computer is being a total pain.

Quite interesting stuff if you ask me, and I guess it’s kind of queer to see my own translation on an actual subbing episode. Now, I will want to evade the many angry Saiunkoku Monogatari fans who have the sudden realization that an idiotic blogger has done the ED translation.

P/S: I am now rewatching the ED translation to see if everything makes sense. I can be paranoid at times.

Ryuuki is also waiting for the chance to at least see Shuurei ever since she moved back into the palace.

After a lapse of a week, Saiunkoku Monogatari returns with the plot thickening and the day of the moon approaching. Who is implicated in this maze of conspiracies?

Episode summary

Ryuuki asked if Shuurei is jealous when Jyuusan Hime arrived. She said she is, but she will be jealous if Seiran ever has a wife too. That left Ryuuki somewhat sad. About Kouyuu, Ryuuki complained that Kouyuu would scold him if he disturbs.. Shuurei told him to visit Kouyuu and apologize if Ryuuki is disturbing him. Ryuuki also felt that the residence seemed to have very poor defense, which aroused Shuurei’s suspicion. When Ryuuki went to visit Kouyuu, Kouyuu initially looked annoyed but eventually made some time for a drink.

The next day, Suou Shin came to visit, and talked about Seiga. He said that Seiga is probably busy with other civil work, and it sparks Shuurei’s inspiration. Seiga’s orders are possibly something different, as Anjun said “yes” from nowhere. When Anjun entered the room, he is surprised why there was a whole peach and a piece, and Shuurei explained that Kouki said it is unlucky to receive a peach from Anjun and decided to return everything. Anjun knew Shuurei wanted information and asked her about the price she is willing to pay. She said she will dress up as a soldier, but Anjun told her that she can chat with him before he finished the peach.

Shuurei thought about Seiga, and how he used Shuurei as a lure earlier on. Seiga is probably trying to get information about the assailant. Compared to Jyuusan-hime, something else is more important. Shuurei asked about the amount of high-ranked officials who died recently, and Anjun said 5. Shuurei realized that everyone in the residence is a lure to get someone out from the dark as she ran to get her normal clothing. We also see Seiga stating that all the plans are set up for the new moon, and the culprit has revealed his position. Shuurei, after checking the 5 people, realized something and ran to the prison only to find Ensei. Ensei is sent to the prison after saving Jyuusan Hime and a whole load of events but his talk is cut short by Shuurei. He is let out and they have a tender moment as Shuurei asked Ensei for help.

Shuurei also went over to Seiran, before she meets Jyuusan Hime for a long talk. Jyuusan said Shuurei probably wanted to talk about Shun, and she says that the plan of the triplets in the Ran clan is to test the capabilities of Ryuuki as an emperor by sending Jyuusan Hime. They only allowed a way out for this event coming in the new moon and it is up to Ryuuki himself to find it. Jyuusan Hime added that she is chosen due to Shun and his relationship with Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime also asked for more time to resolve it. Shuurei also asks whether Jyuusan Hime captured any assailants and whether they have any mark on their forehead. Jyuusan Hime said she found many to have them, those with the mark of a death row prisoner.

The new moon came as Jyuusan Hime fought off some assailants as she mouthed out that she is surprised that the “person” is the one who is controlling this attack. Yuushun is also attacked but Seiran under the instructions of Ryuuki and Shuurei is repelled. Yuushun said that even Seiran who cares only about Shuurei finally grows up. Yuushun said that it is probably a test by Seiga to see Shuurei’s intellectual ability by leaving Yuushun unguarded. Seiran talked about Seiga’s arrogance, but Yuushun said that Seiga have exceptional ability and told Seiran that Ensei is here.

Shun finally appeared in front of Mou’s residence to kill him as Seiga stationed a lot of soldiers. Another masked woman also appeared as she proved to be extremely skillful as scores of soldiers fell almost immediately to her sword strokes. Just when Shun and the woman assassin are about to attack, Seiga said he cannot allow Mou to be killed yet. The female assassin is about to strike Seiga when an arrow deflected her blow. A dart is shot onto Mou’s neck. Shuurei asked if Seiga is not killed yet (with Seiga sarcastically saying that Shuurei spoke her mind), and Ensei moved forward to face off with Shun. Ensei can tell that Shun is very powerful, but Shun said that he still have to go somewhere else as Shun took the female assassin and ran off.

Seiga asked why Shuurei knows about the operation, and it is due to the poor security to lure the thief. However, the security is managed by Mou’s military division, and it is meant to allow the assassination to take place easily. Mou tried to resist that accusation, but Shuurei said Mou wanted his own daughter to be the concubine of the king. Plans are set to kill Jyuusan Hime before she enters the palace, and it must be done before that as any killings in the palace will be allocated to the nobles who are unhappy with the marriage. Then, the investigative department will be employed, and it will be dangerous.

Hence, it is logical to send assassins to attack himself, so that he can have the excuse that he is attacked by others who knows that he is in charge of protecting Jyuusan Hime. Shuurei said that all the recent deaths are officers in Mou’s military division and it is probably ordered by Mou. Shuurei explained that Seiga came to capture Mou, and Shuurei felt something wrong about her analysis. The “fake” attack seems way too real with the amount of casualties. Mou confessed that “someone” said that killing Shuurei and Jyuusan Hime is all right and Mou’s crimes of killing his officials will not be revealed. However, Mou died after that as Ensei noticed a dart stuck at his neck.

Thoughts

This is perhaps one of the hardest episodes to review in the whole of Saiunkoku Monogatari Season II because many of the statements spoken by the characters just don’t make any sense to me. I have to rewatch the episode 3 times before finally getting the context of the conversation. First of all, the plot is carried out by Mou, who wanted Shuurei and Jyuusan Hime to be dead as part of the deal with “someone” in order to hide his own crimes of killing his own officials. Whoever that someone is, I have no clue, but he is perhaps the mastermind behind this assassination.

What is further confusing is the role that the triplets in the Ran clan have. They seem to know about this, and is looking at Ryuuki to provide the only way out to test his mantle as an emperor. I really cannot see how Ryuuki can be inserted in this formula, and I am completely lost about the relationship between Shun and Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime seems to also know about the conspiracy. That makes it extremely complicated because it seems that most of the people in the Ran clan knows what is going on, and is allowing it to happen.

Shun, from his last statement before he left the room, clearly do not work for Mou but for someone else. He said that he wished to fight with Ensei, but his mission here is done and that he has to rush over to another place. He is also glad that 1/2 of his mission is done. That means that there is something else required to be done. The female assassin is also very suspicious and Saiunkoku Monogatari does not usually throw any random character who is so strong to repel scores of men.

Hence, that only leaves one woman who is given some screen time in this arc: Shusui. I dare proclaim that Shusui is definitely the female assassin under the orders of the “kaa-san” from Hyou clan to aid Shun. Still, I do not have a reason or the link behind why Shusui is ordered to attack but even the hair color is the same. She is also from the “Black Wolf clan”, a group of assassins headed by Shouka in the previous era. Hence, it is rather apparent she is the masked assassin but why? Any answers from my commentators?

There is little humor in this episode but the start is great because we get invited to some Ryuuki disappointment that Shuurei did not show any romantic feelings toward Ryuuki again. I think Ryuuki should really be a horse now since horses really get more love than him. I also like Seiran’s amusing reaction when he realizes that the freeloader (aka Ensei) has arrived to the capital. Man, I really wonder why Seiran really hate Ensei so much when Ensei always tries to protect him. I guess the past still haunts Seiran.

So, any one has any concrete speculations on how the plot will move on further? I am completely lost and needs some guidance without evil spoilers. Heh!

After 2 weeks of specials, it is back to our regular viewing of Saiunkoku Monogatari. During the last episode, Shuurei finally had a chance to meet up with Jyuusan Hime. Much to her surprise, it is the girl that she met previously on the road when there was a thief. How will Shuurei communicate with Jyuusan Hime, and what is the status of Shuuei? Shuurei has to worry not only about being the lure for the assassination attempts, but also the attention of Seiga as he awaits his chance to embarrass and insult Shuurei.

Shuurei finally met up with Jyuusan Hime as Shuurei recognized Jyuusan Hime as the girl on the streets. After that meeting, Shuurei dressed up and Suou Shin commented how Shuurei’s chest grew. Seiran whispered that he should ignore that, as well as Shuurei becoming prettier. Shuurei said she could hear it, as Seiran denied saying anything at all. Suou Shin continued to say that even if the chest is fake, men like big chests. Seiran promptly gave Suou Shin a kick and said it was not Shuurei’s fault that she had a small chest. Suou Shin said having such a servant like Seiran was bad, but Shuurei said they were equally bad as Jyuusan Hime agreed. Jyuusan Hime asked about the security and Seiran answered that it was by the army.

Shuurei also talked about “Shun”, the prisoner that would be a standout in the crowd. Jyuusan Hime called “Shuurei-chan”, and told Shuurei that she would be fishing. Shuurei asked if it was her hobby, but she said that it was a way to test poison. Seiran also asked for more reinforcements and security when Jyuusan Hime is fishing. As expected, when Jyuusan Hime caught a fish and fed it food, it died as the food was poisoned. Shuurei instructed Seiran to buy the food, and she would cook the food itself. That delighted Jyuusan Hime, who commented that Shuurei’s cooking could even gain the praise of Ryuuren.

At night, Jyuusan Hime noticed two people on the top of the ceiling as she wondered about the security of the palace. They were clearly small fries, and she did not want to alert them unnecessarily if she fought them off. Hence, she simply sneezed, and they left. The next day, Seiga commented that Shuurei looked just the same, and said that the men around her did not have basic etiquette. When questioned on Shuurei’s appearance, Seiga said he liked the appearance of the old Shuurei as he did not like women who dolled up. Shuurei was also surprised how gentlemanly Seiga can be, and he said that it was the fact that Shuurei is now Jyuusan Hime. Behind the shadows, Jyuusan Hime commented that it is going to be a new moon, and that Seiga is already making his move.

Ryuuki finally met up with Jyuusan Hime, who suggested fishing. Ryuuki confessed that he loved Shuurei when questioned, and apologized for not being able to treat her with romance. Jyuusan Hime said she came in order to protect the person she loves, and will do anything to keep him safe. Jyuusan Hime said Shuurei was doing everything for Ryuuki, but understood that Ryuuki wanted her to try harder. Jyuusan Hime suddenly asked Ryuuki whether he believed everything has a solution and things would be solved perfectly, and he said he did. Jyuusan Hime said he might be the third after someone from the Kou clan and one of the Ran brothers.

After fishing, Jyuusan Hime found an unwell Shusui looking rather uncomfortable. Shusui said she is all right now and Jyuusan Hime asked about Shusui’s expressions of Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime said that she heard that Shuuei was rather popular, and Shusui said that she always had more work due to his romantic antics. Jyuusan Hime immediately apologized but said that it was surprising for someone to criticize Shuuei. Shuuei often gave the perception that he was perfect, and his weaknesses were hidden well. Jyuusan Hime was shocked at how Shuuei had a terrible image to Shusui. Shusui also requested for Jyuusan Hime to stay in the palace.

Night time, Shuurei was used as bait in a horse carriage, but Shuurei complained that the bait was way too obvious. Shun stood outside of the carriage, telling her that he was one of “the spirits in the prison”. He told Shuurei to listen to Jyuusan Hime for her own safety as Shuurei realized that Shun probably knew Jyuusan Hime well. He warned that the “event” will happen on the new moon and allow Shuuei to do his thing. Shun said everything would move smoothly, and told Shuurei to keep it a secret from Seiga even if it was hard. After a firefly flew past, Shun added by saying that Shuurei was really like the woman he loved.

Seiga came and Shuurei denied everything about Shun. Seiga said that Shuurei became smart and addressed her as “Shuurei”, the first time he did it. The horse carriage started to move as Seiga said that he could help to readjust Shuurei’s hair. When Shuurei asked where Seiga was going, he said he did not know but said that it was to waste some time. Seiga said someone would pick her up anyway. Shuurei was surprised how good Seiga was at tidying hair, but Seiga coldly told her to do some research about him to find out. As he got closer and taunted her to entertain him, Shuurei realized that Seiga did not trust women at all, and retorted strongly that she was not a play thing for him.

Just when Seiga’s lips were about to touch Shuurei, a horse ride came as it was Shuuei who picked her up. Shuuei asked what happened, and Shuurei told him that the event would come on the new moon. When Shuurei asked Shuuei whether he believed that everything has a solution, Shuuei said he never believed in such a thing. Shuurei dismounted, and was annoyed when Shuuei commented that the hairdo really fitted Shuurei, and thought it was done by Shusui. Shuuei also said that he liked Ryuuki, but liking Ryuuki is different from his loyalties as Shuurei realized that the trusted flower was no longer with Shuuei.

Shuurei came back at a mess, and Jyuusan said Shuurei looked like she was going to scream. Shuurei said she would feed some radish to the horses. However, when Jyuusan Hime was about to join her, the description of Shun seemed to resonate within her and she seemed to be affected as she told Shuurei to go ahead alone. Ryuuki met Shuurei at the stables, while we see Seiga promising to protect the general in charge of protecting Jyuusan Hime.

Thoughts

Sorry for not updating my thoughts! My friends actually came to my house today and we have such a great time. Ok, I admit that it is the evil of civilization 4 too. Well, other than giving excuses, it’s time for my discussion (and yours as well).

One major thing is the question of why Seiga is trying to lure Shuuei to save Shuurei. It almost looks as though he is not too surprised at all that Shuuei is going to come over. I have a feeling that Seiga seems to suspect Shuuei to be one of the suspects in the assassination, and to make sure that the emperor is turned away from the strongest clan in the Saiunkoku world. However, with Seiga’s behavior, I really cannot tell what he is really thinking at all. He’s perhaps the most complex person in the story, since you still do not know his aims. Seiga is just the type of character you love to hate and like for his evil behavior.

Jyuusan Hime is completely awesome! If anything, she is definitely a very streetwise girl, and she explains that she is adopted rather than born into the Ran clan. That definitely begs the question about the circumstances that she gets into the Ran clan. In that case, her choice to protect a person (which is clearly Shuuei) she loves, she does anything. That makes her a really interesting princess that I wish to see much more in the Saiunkoku Monogatari series. She adds the grace of a princess with the streetwise behavior of a beauty thug.

Who the hell is Shun anyway? That guy is really jumping into the plot without any notice at all, calling himself a ghost of the prison. I do wonder if the person he loves is Jyuusan Hime before she entered into the Ran clan, but the wistful feel when Shun describes the woman he loved made me think that she is either dead or away from him forever. I do want to know what this event is, and where it is coming from. I will not be too surprised if it’s someone from the nobles since they are the ones who aim to usurp power.

Lastly, I really want to comment about how Seiran and Suou Shin are focusing about Shuurei’s chest. I mean, Suou Shin making a dig at Shuurei’s chest is quite logical since he is a really blunt person. However, when Seiran went on a tangent about “not blaming Ojou-sama for having small breasts” made me laugh so hard since Seiran’s warped form of protecting Shuurei is just way too adorable. I actually agree with Seiga that she looks much better without any strange make up since I also do not like dolled up characters.

I initially thought that this is merely a recap of the series once again, but it turns out to be something really interesting. The theme of this interview/talkshow is “Who is the future romance and marriage partner for Shuurei?”. For all of us who are watching this for the romantic element (and most of us do), this is perhaps one of the most hilarious specials that is available. The seiyuu for Ryuuki, Seiran, Kouyuu and Shuuei were invited to give their views on the prospective partners for Shuurei.

Do you want to know what they believe to be a great partner for Shuurei and how they decide their choice?

Kouyuu

Shuuei’s seiyuu laughed at Kouyuu, saying that Kouyuu cannot save Shuurei if she ever gets attacked physically (which seems to happen quite a bit). Kouyuu’s seiyuu was skeptical, since Kouyuu hated women. However, with the marriage proposal by Kurou in the second season, it seemed that he was extremely nervous and might seem like a good pair. The host proposed that Kouyuu has huge experience as an official. Moreover, keeping the power within the Kou Clan met more leverage for Shuurei’s future as an official and the two seemed to communicate well.

They also mentioned his lack of direction sense, his huge concern over Shuurei after the marriage proposal and his inability to drink being pure and cute traits. Seiran’s seiyuu felt that the deterring factor was the fact that the relationship seemed like a mother and son, as Shuurei’s maternal instincts come into play. An amusing point was when Kouyuu’s seiyuu imitated the reaction of Kouyuu during the time, as he stammered out Shuurei before screaming out loud. That is clearly Kouyuu all the way!

Reishin

As they mentioned Kouyuu, they also noted that Reishin will follow with a marriage between Kouyuu and Shuurei. Kouyuu’s seiyuu did mention that a marriage between Reishin and Shuurei would be good since Reishin will protect Shuurei from any form of trouble due to his great love toward his niece.

Shuuei

Everyone in the audience hall laughed when Shuuei’s character image appeared (a sign of amusement and disbelief, perhaps?). Despite the lack of dialog between Shuurei and Shuuei, the Ran and Kou clan were the two major clans. The marriage between the two clans would be extremely advantageous for Shuurei’s aim to be an official and Shuuei would be the best support for her career. He can also protect Shuurei from any physical harm (compared to Kouyuu). Moreover, Shuuei seems to exude the mature vibes like Sakujun, the man that wavered the emotions of Shuurei. He also had a lot of “love experiences” with women.

Despite Shuuei’s seiyuu assurances that Shuuei would be a good husband, the majority of the interviewees considered his womanizing attitude to be a huge problem. Shuurei would feel very worried as a wife with a womanizing husband like Shuuei. Shuuei’s seiyuu tried to defend himself that these love experiences was to make him a “better man” and he would be a proper man if he married. Whatever that means, hah!

Seiran

Seiran seems to have great support as there was loud applause and sounds of “KYAAAA” emitted from the audience. Seiran is always supporting Shuurei, and he is perhaps the one that understands Shuurei the most. They added that Seiran was the only male that she ever showed her complete weakness and is always the one she runs to when she cries. Despite Shuurei’s firm beliefs and outspoken nature, Seiran is always the one running to protect her and reassure her.

However, the problem is that Seiran has a lot of secrets such as his relationship with Ryuuki and his past experiences before meeting Shuurei. Seiran’s seiyuu said that he had absolutely nothing to hide, eliciting laughter as the host reiterated that she was asking about Seiran, not him. He did not want Seiran to end with Shuurei, as the fact that he calls her “ojou-sama” seems to show that he has no interest in advancing the relationship into romance. His seiyuu did mention that the often use of “ojou-sama” made him a waiter in a tea cafe, calling out “ojou-sama” gently to customers.

Ryuuki

Ryuuki is the one that is most direct among the men in his love toward Shuurei and always gazes at Shuurei with love. It seems that Ryuuki is the best choice but Shuurei never reciprocates. Ryuuki’s seiyuu agreed that Ryuuki is the front runner, even though he felt that he did not feel like it is the case lately. Seiran’s seiyuu felt that as Seiran, he supported Ryuuki but his personal view was that Kouyuu and Shuurei were more suitable as a couple. Seiran’s seiyuu also “back stabbed” Ryuuki’s seiyuu by stating that Ryuuki’s character was extremely pure but his seiyuu was a playboy.

Decision time!

They also tried to count the number of seconds that any of the guys appeared on the anime together with only Shuurei for the whole first season. The scenes can be of both of them fully visible, only the hands, even if the head was cut off and no matter how small the characters are. As you can see, Ryuuki’s screen time with Shuurei was more than the other three combined. Hence, it is decided that Ryuuki is the winner of the competition. I do pity Shuuei though. He has 0 seconds with Shuurei from Episode 21 to 39.

It is a pity that they did not include the other seiyuus, such as Tantan (Suou Shin), or Ryuuren. Nevertheless, it is definitely a very interesting insight by the seiyuus, who breath and live by their characters. Do you agree or not?

Shuurei received information from the last episode that she will be a cover for the Jyuusan Hime. It means that she will be returning to the palace where all the “concubines” will stay. However, as we saw from the little snippets, Jyuusan Hime is no sitting duck. She is just as spunky compared to Shuurei, possibly even more so. It will definitely be a very interesting twist when Shuurei and Jyuusan Hime officially meet each other. Seiga also seemed to have a role to play in this, but it is not stated in the last episode.

This episode sets up the stage for the two, as well as character development for Shuuei and Shusui.

Episode summary

Jyuusan Hime came in just in time to stop Seiran from pestering Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime said she had private matters to discuss with Shuuei, as Seiran took his leave. Jyuusan Hime said Seiran was oblivious to the choice she was given by the clan. The two choices were “Go to the palace” or “Marry Seiran”. Shuuei said that he could not imagine the latter choice as it was bad enough to have a loony brother like Ryuuren, and he would die with a brother-in-law like Seiran. Shuuei said he was surprised that she would come to become a concubine. He then replied to her comment that she would probably understand Ryuuki the most. Shuuei was somewhat surprised at his brothers’ swift actions.

Jyuusen Hime said that Shuuei eventually had to make a choice between the Ran clan and Ryuuki, and said he was silly to receive the flower when he knew he could not fulfill his promise. She sympathized with Ryuuki but told Shuuei that delaying his decision would be disastrous. When she asked whether Shuuei would abandon the Ran clan, he said the Ran surname was all that he had. Jyuusan Hime had faith that he would choose a path soon, unlike Seiran who felt that Shuuei would be too indecisive. Jyuusan Hime said that Shuuei could kill her to solve the issue, but Shuuei said he could not do that. Jyuusan Hime also realized that it was not Shuuei who sent the assassins to kill her.

Shuurei and Suou Shin were checking on the prison and its general cleanliness. As the guard praised Shuurei to be the only official other than Seiga to take their job with pride, Shuurei laughed uneasily as she “agreed”. The two were also trying to persuade a free loading prisoner (who was clear of murder) to come out. He refused to be released since food and the life here was much better due to Shuurei’s work. The prisoner said that he would come out if Shuurei was more gentle, and Shuurei did a rather awful attempt to persuade the prisoner. Suou Shin said that a man devoid of women would find the most unattractive woman to be attractive. The prisoner said being too frank would cause his love life to be stagnant.

In the end, he decided to go out since he found Shuurei to be cute. He also added that his ex-love was very similar to Shuurei. When Shuurei apologized for the false judgment, he said it was not her who made the mistake. Shuurei also reprimanded him for not speaking out that he was innocent as he said once again that she was really like his ex-flame. He then warned her about the dead spirit in the prison. Suou Shin said it was a very famous tale, as Shuurei and Suou Shin were chased by some people sent to kill them. Eventually, a smoke bomb thrown by Shuurei shook off their pursuers.

When they reached the investigative department, they were in a complete mess as Seiga ridiculed Shuurei. He actually came over to greet them, and Shuurei questioned about the security of the back palace. Seiga said it would be troublesome if the assassin could not enter at all, and reminded Shuurei that she was merely a body double for Jyuusan Hime. Seiga also informed her that her work would be taken over by him. Shuurei was about to complain about her jobs being taken over by Seiga, and Suou Shin told her that she should give thanks when superiors like Seiga did her work. Suou Shin also reminded her that Seiga had much more work experience. Shuurei said that she found it hard to thank people like Seiga, but would thank someone like Suou Shin.

Suou Shin told her to imagine her superior to be him, and explained that it allowed more time for her to do things she wanted. Shuurei was energized by those words. Suou Shin was extremely tired after researching on the names of those who died in prison. Shuurei realized that there was a discrepancy in the numbers of deaths in the prison. Riou came in to visit Shuurei and Shuurei said he was not authorized to enter. Riou told her that his rank in the palace was even higher than Kouki. Shuurei offered to brew tea, but Riou said that he would do it since men would take advantage of women. However, he accepted Shuurei’s offer of the er hu.

Riou said that he might have been overboard with some words said to Ryuuki, even though it was true. Riou said Ryuuki might be crying, as we have a cut scene of Ryuuki lamenting to Shusui. Ryuuki then pressed Shusui to do some sewing to change his mood. Shuurei told Riou to apologize and said that Ryuuki was very kind. Shuurei added that it was clear that Ryuuki liked Riou, taking Riou by surprise. Shusui discussed about Jyuusan Hime and Shuurei’s re-entrance of the back palace, and Ryuuki was worried about that. Ryuuki asked if Shusui had any intention to marry, as he said that he would be lonely without her. Shusui said she wished to stay by his side, but she might need to leave one day. She said that she had been escaping all the time, and it would get to her one day.

While Shusui walked along the corridor, the voices of “Obey orders, finish the mission” rang in her head. Riou walked past and said that Shusui did well to resist the calls up to now. When Riou tried to help Shusui back to her room, she screamed out in fear as Riou said that he felt that he was hated badly. Shuuei rushed forward to protect her, only for Shusui to murmur a word of rescue to “Shouka”. As Shuuei returned to his room, Jyuusan Hime asked whether the fan was from someone he loved. However, he said there was little hint of romance and Shusui already had someone she loved.

Jyuusan Hime asked whether the lady was from the back palace, and Shuuei said she was. The scene at the palace was all right, but since the investigative department was allowed to freely get through, the officers would be blamed if anything happened. Jyuusan Hime complained that Shuuei did not care about them, but he said that they would do their best to survive. Shuuei said that he asked Jyuusan Hime to inform Ryuuki that the next time he met Ryuuki would be his last. There was also another thing, but the scene changed to Shusui and Seiran receiving Shuurei. Shuurei realized that Shusui was not feeling well. Shuurei also realized who Jyuusan Hime was.

Thoughts

Is it just me but Riou seems to show almost no form of hostility toward Shusui. I mean, it is apparent that Shusui is totally freaked out by the appearance of Riou, but it feels to me that Riou probably does not intend to torture or torment Shusui at all. Despite his harsh and frank words, it is clear that he is not malicious toward anyone at all. In fact, Riou looks a bit too harmless to be one of the Hyou clan, especially when he said with a slightly sad tone that he was hated by Shusui.

That said, it seems that the anime is finally hitting the right notes of tension as there are a few plots running around, and quite a few are more explicitly interesting. I mean, it is fun to see Shuurei running around, but it seems that Shuurei tends to do better when she’s not the main focus of the plot. She is still in the thick of the action, but the plot itself is less centric on her currently. I actually like the refreshing entrance of Jyuusan Hime, and she’s proving to be a very strong headed and attractive lady. YOU GO, GIRL! I also wonder about the under currents behind the assassination of Jyuusan Hime.

It is definitely very hard to think of a group of people that dares to antagonize the Ran clan, especially by killing their Jyuusan Hime of all people. It is a curious thing about the arrangement on marrying Seiran. I wonder why they would even think of pushing Jyuusan Hime to Seiran. As Shuuei puts it brilliantly well, it is definitely a very scary thought by any standards. I think that Seiran can be really scary and pushy when it comes to things that needs to be done, and he seems somewhat judgmental on some people. That is perhaps the reason why Seiran is rather harsh to Shuuei for the few times they met eye to eye.

I actually like Suou Shin’s role in the anime right now. He is perhaps the calming light around Shuurei to give her a fresh perspective on things that should be rather honest for most people. Despite his lack of apparent “talent”, it is clear that Shuurei needs this form of level headed personnel beside her. I mean, one simple event is apparent from Shuurei’s anger at her work taken away by Seiga, but it simply gives more time for her to do her own things.

Lastly, I wonder why Jyuusen Hime suggested Shuuei to kill her. In addition, I find it somewhat disturbing how she spoke in a matter of fact that she initially had Shuuei being one of the possible people to assassinate her. I mean, it’s probably obvious that Shuuei is not a cold blooded creature but I am surprised how Jyuusen Hime is so brave or foolhardy to treat her life as an entity. I really want to know what has brought up such a refreshing and interesting view point to life.

Anyway, that’s about it from me. I will love to hear what you feel about this episode!

As we end with the conclusion of Shuurei’s time in the reserved official role, a new arc is on the way. Shuurei finally accepted a job role at the investigative department under Kouki. It is clear that her time there will be one of a growing up period, considering that her “nemesis” Seiga and the uncompromising Kouki will toughen her up. The news on the Ran clan’s 13th princess as the concubine of Ryuuki is also a huge event, as everyone starts to talk about a conspiracy to assassinate the Ran’s clan princess before she can assume her marriage to Ryuuki.

This episode starts off exciting, and I am sure many will be curious about the 13th princess!

Episode summary

A lady with the bracers of the Ran clan rode her horse in a forest. She was waylaid by bandits. Ensei then appeared to save the girl (a bit shocked that she resembled Shuurei). The lady thanked him and rode away to leave Ensei to fend for himself. At the Kou residence, Shouka and Seiran were looking at Shuurei venting her anger of Seiga on the dough. Seiran asked if it was wise to leave her alone as she might go crazy with the way she’s “attacking” the food but Shouka said she simply needed to vent some anger and was impressed by the “influence of Seiga”. If she was not angry, it meant that she had conceded defeat. Eventually, Shuurei calmed down and smiled.

An officer named Mou informed Kouki about various plans by assassin guilds to assassinate the princess from Ran clan. He wished to get Kouki’s help to prevent this. Shuuei was thinking about his past at the Ran clan, with a girl and his three elder brothers. He seemed to look wistful over the memory, and walked out to see Shusui making a dance symbolizing unrequited love. Shusui realized someone was looking at her dance as she threw the fan, only to realize it was Shuuei. Shuuei’s tears were falling uncontrollably as sad memories were triggered. Shusui then noticed that his sleeve was cut.

In Shusui’s room, Shuuei started to mumble that he did everything to love “her”. However, when he saw how she was happy with his three brothers, he felt bitter inside. Shusui said he was brought up in a very happy environment and Shuuei took happiness for granted. Shusui added it was better for a loved one to be happy rather than sad. She would gratefully accept this, even though Shuuei disagreed. That was why he escaped from the Ran clan, and she said it was up to each person to decide. After Shuuei left, Shusui was struggling to suicide as she kept hearing a sound in her mind. Ryuuki’s voice outside the room stopped her from doing so, but the shock for Shusui appeared when she saw Young Riou beside Ryuuki.

An amber blue shone from Riou’s eyes, as Shusui’s fears continued to grow as she felt that she was being swallowed from within. At the investigative department, Shuurei prepared lunch as Suou Shin looked over the food. Shuurei told him that lunch was still far. Seiga took a bite. He said that it was done while thinking of him as it was clear that there was a spy looking at her every movement. Seiga told Shuurei that Kouki wanted to meet them, and encouraged her to investigate on him too if she wanted. Suou Shin said the quarrel between the sexes was extremely scary. In spite, Shuurei called for an early lunch.

As they ate, Anchou came over and said that it was the only place to spend some alone time with a female in the palace. Shuurei said Suou Shin was here and Anchou said Suou Shin was the only blemish. Shuurei asked about Seiga, and Anchou said Seiga was the illegitimate child of Kouki. Shuurei was shocked before Anchou said it was a joke as he reminded her that he often lies. Shuurei kept asking about Seiga, and Anchou was sad that he was neglected. Shuurei said Anchou was very popular, and Anchou was interested to know. Shuurei asked for an exchange of information as Anchou agreed. Shuurei asked if the people supporting Ryuuki was increasing or decreasing, and Anchou said decreasing because Kouyuu and Shuuei were distant, and it was rumored that Youshun’s appointment caused the drift.

Anchou asked about his popularity, and she said he was the only client that Kochou could not get any information on. Anchou remembered about meeting the young Shuurei. As he left, Anchou suddenly said that she had to be stronger to protect the king. As Shuurei and Seiga met Kouki in his office, he warned them to run away from Anchou and do not accept anything he gave. Shuurei said she ate the peach he fed her, and Kouki told Shuurei to ignore his warnings. Seiga questioned why he was not given the sole responsibility for the mission. Kouki explained as he gave instructions to Shuurei to masquerade as the Ran 13th princess, and if must be, die for her. As Shuurei exited the room, she wondered what Ryuuki would think about her being a substitute.

Kouyuu wondered about the giving of the 13th princess as a concubine, and he could not get away with the amount of work. It was clear that the Kou (Reishin) and Ran (the three brothers) clan were trying to keep Kouyuu and Shuuei away from the emperor. At the archives, Ryuuki found Riou for advice. Ryuuki asked what would happen if he rejected the marriage offer, and Riou said that it would cause huge disputes among the officials for brushing aside a proposal from a major noble clan. Ryuuki wanted to keep a monogamy. Riou said he did not understand about love, and said that Shuurei would do anything for him. Even if everyone forsake him, she would still be by his side to fight for him. Ryuuki should be happy about this.Riou warned him that being too dependent on Shuurei would cause even a strong willed girl like Shuurei to crumble.

As Riou stepped out, Youshun warned him that he was way too harsh even if it was the truth. Riou warned him that there would be death if Youshun acted so slow. Youshun said people had to die, and it was only when. That comment left Riou surprised. Shuurei and Suou Shin were traveling on a horse carriage as there was a thief. Shuurei stepped down to stop him, only for the 13th princess to knock the thief out. The 13th princess rummaged through the thief’s belongings to find some cash as Shuurei approached her. The 13th princess realized that it was Shuurei, and she tried to explain to Shuurei that she was not rummaging to steal the thief’s coins.

As the 13th princess tried to run with the cash, Shuurei held onto the pouch. Shuuei was not wearing the flower with the sword as he stepped out, only to meet Seiran. Seiran warned him to either leave or protect the king, instead of this haphazard behavior in which he would not protect the emperor if Ryuuki was in trouble. Seiran knew Ryuuki told Shuuei could choose Ran, but warned Shuuei that he was not as naive as Ryuuki. Seiran told him to leave completely back to the Ran clan, and leave his flower behind. A voice spoke out telling Seiran not to bully his brother. The 13th princess finally arrived to the palace.

Thoughts

We finally have some interesting conversation between Shusui and Shuuei, even though it is more of a serious talk rather than something amusing or flirting. Nevertheless, the flashback really fleshed out the character of Shuuei, as I start to wonder who the female blond is. Maybe I am slow or something, but there has been absolutely no mention of this woman in any of the previous episodes. Nevertheless, it is clear that it is perhaps the anger that he is not able to do anything to have his love requited. However, it feels somewhat naive, silly and ridiculous to escape if it is for that reason.

For a very smart person, Shuuei is definitely not acting very smart right now. I do hope that the truth is somewhat distorted from what he says, because I am very disappointed if it is because of love that he leaves the family. He should have a bit more maturity than that, and face up to the truth. There’s always other flowers in the garden other than the one you really want. Nevertheless, it is good that this opportunity arises so that we can see a different side of Shusui.

It’s a huge wonder why Shusui is hearing voices and sounds. In the anime itself, she seems to be hearing the sound of a bell, and I did not explain it elaborately in the summary. However, she is on the verge of killing herself by disemboweling her stomach using the scissors. If it is not for Ryuuki’s call for her outside her room, Shusui would have been dead. It is also clear that it is not the first time that she is trying to kill herself. What is this voice that continues to haunt her? It must clearly point to the Hyou clan, as she completely freaked out when she saw Riou.

I also like how Seiran challenged Shuuei in his indecisive behavior. It is very true that he is binded by the Ran clan in order to prevent Shuuei from helping Ryuuki. Nevertheless, the very fact that he is being haphazard is doing nothing good, as it is clear that Kouyuu is stopped by Reishin by the mere volume of work Kouyuu is bestowed. This clearly does not bode well for Ryuuki as he becomes more isolated from his aides. I wonder if Youshun’s words that he might be killed if he deliberates too long is a foreboding to come. I hope not.

Lastly, I do not want to go on a few paragraphs about the 13th princess. Let me just say this: she rocks and I already love her.

The end. Tell me your thoughts if you watched it, or you simply want to throw evil novel spoilers here (Ya, i cannot resist to make a dig sometimes, forgive this evil Impz).

Once again, this episode is just a recap of the two frauds. The only fresh thing that is perhaps important is how Seiran warned Ryuuki that he is giving way too much preference and power to the Ran and Kou clan. Other noble clans are starting to be annoyed at the bias from Ryuuki, and is wondering if they are even trusted. Seiran told him to be more careful and be less naive in his actions.

That’s about the only new information. Shuurei is happily cursing Seiga to insanity in the preview. So, if anything, next week will definitely have quite a bit of humor!
