Most people know I hardly dislike anything and I do not voice it out most of the time. However, this really turned me off big time that I need to let it out.

What the hell is with that kiss?

Someone please explain to me about the sudden kiss between the two of them. This is a situation where Yuuichi is mostly just teasing Ayu as a little girl, with no hint whatsoever for any romantic relationships in the previous 18 episodes. You can argue that they are in love 7 years ago, but that’s 7 years ago. Not now. I personally think that it’s a really bad execution, with that sudden kiss out of the blue. First, Yuuichi suddenly blushed looking at Ayu out of nowhere in this episode. Then, the kiss came. I am not denying that the relationship is progressing slowly due to Ayu’s comfort but that feels more like a friend’s comfort than a blossoming love relationship.

Even emotional turmoil by the two makes the “rebound relationship” argument weak since this is simply out of way completely. I need people to convince me that the kiss is not sudden because it is greatly to me. I expected a steady execution or at least some hints dropped along the previous 18 episodes about a liking. I don’t even demand a blush from Yuuichi, but perhaps some thoughts and hints to the relationship. If you are wondering, I am perfectly fine with Ayu’s ending because they are destined to be together, compared to Nayuki even though she is my favorite among the two. However, it is the sudden 0 to 100 LOVE meter gradation that really pisses me off.

Well, I just had to let this rant out. Do try to convince me that this is in fact logical because even a subtle form of realism in this relationship is thrown out of the window completely.

p/s: I still love Kanon a lot.

Yes, I simply wanted to post something random, considering that I have suddenly thought of the Power Rangers when I saw the above screenshot. What will really happen if Kanon turns into a Power Ranger spoof? Actually, it is not “if it really happens”. It is in fact the story of a harem ranger, learning how to improve his power through the various senseis in this series. He is in fact the sheer combination of Naruto + Sasuke + Ichigo + Ana Coppola!

Don’t ask why for the last one. It’s stated in the shounen chronicles that a moe~ character must always be added into any shounen post in the Warped Shounen Guidebook1.01v. The guidebook sells for a cheap price of a taiyuki that must be grabbed by stealing it from the evil Master Vile-who-sells-taiyuki-at-the-roadside. Yes, I never watch a single episode of Power Rangers before.

Yuuichi, our great shounen character in Kanon shows you the steps of being the GREATEST HAREM RANGER and of course, he’s over 9000 thousand. Yes, all of you readers have been tricked. Kanon is smartly disguised as a harem series when its essence is truly a shounen series.

First step: Learn the chant

In every shounen show, the character goes through a very weak phase of their lives. They generally start off as a very weak character and sometimes have problems even against weak enemies that can be killed with a finger by other side characters. Whenever the harem ranger is in a pinch, we always have a teacher that will mysterious appear from somewhere and enlighten our harem ranger, Yuuichi.

In this case, we have the taiyaki master, famous for causing great explosions all over the Earth with her ability to consume taiyaki, a fish-shaped cookie that is in fact the energy generation of all magical powers in the Kanon realm. Unknown to man and alien alike, taiyaki is in fact the energy force of the lifestream. Without it, we cannot survive. With her great abilities, she shows Yuuichi how to summon up the most powerful phrase in the Kanon universe.

It is the magical “Uguu”, to transform into the ultimate Uguu Harem Ranger! It’s MORPHING TIME!

Second step: Fight against the weaker foes

In a shounen anime, the main character often starts off fighting against weak opponents that technically cannot do much to him. However, since it is a shounen show, he also has great difficulties. Even so, his first enemy is a dog that looks somehow like a totally pretty girl with long hair. The dog even looks like Mai. How interesting, this dog must be a poltergeist in nature to be able to do that.

See, it’s a nice dog. Cute little woof for good measure (However, why is the dog looking so like Mai? Is the dog trying to lure our harem ranger with sexual lust and beauty?)

However, the harem ranger cannot drop his guard! He must still prevail, even though it is using its cuteness to defeat him. Fighting the first celestial dog was pretty easy. Yet, the next task was going to be much harder.

Third step: Fight against the stronger foes

As you can tell, all shounen characters tended to have a point when they realize no matter how much they try, they are just not good enough. This is the stage of the more powerful boss, where it is like final fantasy. You know that a mob is definitely a boss when there’s a cut scene and a different sort of music plays in the background. It is definitely the same logic here. We see that our main character is in a fix fighting the great boar of destruction.

And it’s in fact a cross breed between a boar and a cow. Wow, talk about hybrid creatures.

Fourth step: Shounen hero has his first loss

Every shounen hero has to fall at one stage of the series. He will then become stronger, when a greater master, one that has the harsh and cold demeanor to show the newbie her ways. That master is of course Mai, the wonderful sword maiden.

Fifth step: Master enters

The master must first show her moves in the most grandeur way in order to prove that she was indeed so strong that the harem ranger can only bow down in shame and beg to be taught a lesson (pun intended).

And the master dismantled the opponent easily. Add some wind effects, a nice sword and that “I WIN, YOU LOSE, YOU FAIL!” pose. It always works wonders.

And another episode of Harem Ranger: Yuuichi’s chronicles end on a cliffhanger. Will the great sword maiden finally teach our harem ranger Yuuichi her arts or will she reject him, forcing him to go on a quest to find a fox in the hills, save a girl who seems that she is sick but in fact she’s faking it or a sleepy girl that is going to walk into the school with only her night pajamas?

What will happen to our harem ranger?

Attack 1: Nayuki

This is the episode where we saw Yuuichi being out of the stereotype. As we all know, most harem male leads do have a female character that is always on home waiting for him. This is well known as the “childhood friend” syndrome in shows where there is always a hot and cuddly cute childhood friend. Look, his first step of discovery is achieved as Nayuki faithfully welcomes him home after he went to school to have a date with the hot silent chick, Yuki Nagato with long hair and a sword Mai.

*The actual truth is that he went to pick up books for Nayuki, which is another sweet thing to charm her heart*

And…

Attack 2: Makoto

Then, he goes into the bath, with Makoto inside. Using the excuse that he was tired and did not realize it, he showed his naked body to Makoto, leaving her shocked and gasping over his body. That harem loving Yuuichi has once again captured another girl, this time, poor sweet and cute Auuuu~ Makoto.

See, even Makoto agrees. Rawr!

Attack 3: Mai

And then he tricks Mai into a confession of love via his evil schemes. See, I really wonder if there’s a selection basis for his harem. For one, the girls must be in snow because sad girls in snow are cute. However, the problem also comes when you will stop collecting. For Yuuichi, it seems that his philosophy in life is “There’s never enough.”

So there you go, he goes around trying to silently win over Mai by getting her to talk and making her interested in him. It seemed he succeeded, since they were eating lunch together. With that said, the next target of Yuuichi’s harem came in.

Attack 4: Sayuri

Sayuri is my next fanboy target due to the fact that she holds two factors that make me think she is like Asa. Firstly, she has a really friendly personality. Second, any anime character that can cook gets an instant plus point for me because being able to cook “wicked good” in Kyon’s words is definitely good enough for me as well. She is also hit down by Yuuichi with his flirty words on making her his bride.

Man, Yuuichi’s words of love knows no bounds. On the count now, Yuuichi has successfully snagged Makoto, Ayu (not mentioned because she will stalk him anyway), Nayuki, Mai and now Sayuri.

Damn it.

He has 5 gals in his harem.

Sayuri even said the answer herself that “all the girls in the world will be your bride”. IT’S HIS FRICKING INTENTION!!!

And Sayuri is so happy over it. Sigh, you are being deceived!

Attack 5: Shiori

The worst thing Yuuichi could do is to date a sickly chick that cannot be out in the cold. Now, he does it. She is all “Because i want to see you” and calling him “Oni-chan”. She also goes on about making a snowman that is 10 metres high.

She is really sick.

Man, does he have a loli fetish like some others in the anime community. I am sure there is because the following evidence is extremely compelling for my studies of Yuuichi as a dirty man.

Asking Makoto to buy pron.

Now that’s a strange and serious problem. His fetishes are getting scary.

Welcome to the anime that is so overly blogged that I heard of some people dropping this already. Since I believe there are a million other bloggers blogging on Kanon (actual result is perhaps around 52), I will not go into the plot since you probably will read it somewhere already.

Or somehow.

I think Kurogane have the same problem as me. I really find Makoto’s “yatta yatta yatta yatta yatta” so fricking addictive that I found myself listening to it quite a few times already.

She’s cute, I tell you, the great fang-chan. She completely rocks and it seems that she is fitting to my guess that she’s a fox. Anyway, more action after more…

Very importantly, her Auuuuuu~ in different versions all sound so darn cute, and I really am falling in love with the Auuuuu~. Auuuu~ is so cute.

A waste she did not whack the dumb Nayuki together. I bet she will go like….why did you slap me? At least the dumbness Nayuki and Ayu are cute. If they are fat and ugly, then it’s a complete lost cause for them. Kyoto Animation is smart to make them extremely cute.

You know, I really think that the town not only has an amnesia problem, they also have a serious case of stupidity. I am a big fan of Akiko but that does not mean that I endure stupidity. Seriously, such a big oden ingredient is so so dumb. I mean, I am sure that Nayuki is not thinking of this as a joke.

She feels dumb enough to think of it that way. Really. I feel like I might be a tad biased here but the fact that Akiko joined in so that she had some humor. Still, i swear that there is a swamp somewhere in this town where there is a toxic that makes you forget everything after you leave the town, not unlike Higurashi. That is the true mystery of the town, where there is Shion Shiori going around killing everyone in sight on the pretense that she is sick.

Notice she is lingering around? She actually has a deathbook and tricks Yuuichi to give his full name so that she can write his name and know his face if she ever needs to kill him. She can also threaten him that if he does not have hot love for Makoto and her together, she will kill him.

OMG.

After that, she will make sure Yuuichi will kill the dumb but cute gal, the dumb but taiyuki-loving gal and leave the hot mama for the fun of it. Yes, dumbness is infectious as Shiroi is affected and eventually writes her own name and dies.

In my opinion, this is the best scene for Kanon episode 3. Making Ayu cry is an art that must be mastered at all costs and I really appreciate Yuuichi’s effort to make life as miserable for Ayu as possible. Go Yuuichi go! Her suffering is my pleasure!

1. Ayu tries to find a lame excuse so that she can grope Yuuichi with her body. Notice she hopped on him so that she can feel his manly body. Tsk tsk tsk.

Ending has Mai trying to pwn something. DIE, DIE, DIE!!!!

The grand entrance of Impzie’s newest swoonage character (other than Sunako, Mariya, Kana, Feena, Jun, Ayako, Shoukou among many). Ok, I am seriously suffering from Compulsive Cuteness Syndrome…

This is the new cute face of Kanon. This is her glamorous entrance with “YES, I AM GONNA PWN YOU, YOU STUPID YUUICHI” music playing in the ground. That is just about the biggest entrance ever for a character in Kanon to wow me over. Her having a grundge probably has something to do with the fact that Yuuichi is way too thick in his head, thinking about espers, time travellers and aliens to notice such a cute gal in his memories. I am sure of it. Either that, or he is trying to find someone with wings that practically has an IQ of 50. Sorry, Ayu fans, I don’t hate her, but I do hate her stupidity.

That is why he said “Who the hell are you?”. Oh god, talk about thickness.

That is like so fricking sad because Fang-chan seems to be a big winner in Kanon. I am already thinking that she is way cuter than Ayu, or even Nayuki or whichever character is going to appear in this show.

Hereby, I will want to somehow twist the FFF (Fap fap feena) to the FFF (Fap fap Fang-chan) club. Oh god, I will be killed by that fanclub soon enough but Feena is still hot. However, it is just that Fang-chan just bowled me over immediately.

There are more reasons why she is so cool for me.

She even announced her whole presence to the anime community.

“PREPARE YOURSELF!”

She is not only attacking Yuuichi, but she is also going to invade your hearts in the way that the Gao~ went into our hearts. She is asking us to prepare ourselves for her greatness in this series where all the gals are so cute and all! Remember when we started drinking peach juice in reverance of a character? (ok, i lied, i never did). Remember when we go insane with dinosaurs? This is it, she is asking us to prepare for her blend of awesomeness, violence and cuteness all packaged into one neat pile.

Who cares what kind of grundge she has? Just give her more viewing time and I will be glad. Make her a shapeshifting creature for better imagery. Yes, I am still holding on to the dumb logic that she’s a fox.

Yuuichi, being the thick numskull he is, casts iron skin and barkskin altogether, causing all the attacks of our fang-chan to be nulled easily. I mean, if she has been secretive about the whole attack and all, Yuuichi will have no chance in hell to absorb her awesome and explosive attack.

I mean, seriously, a tsundere character that cannot hurt anyone. Now, that’s cute stuff for you because you have a fierce character that can do nothing but cute pain to you. She is just about the most harmless tsundere that is particularly cute. Did I mention that I think Auu~ is really much cuter than Uguuu~? I did? Good, because I am going to say it again.

Anytime. Even Fang-chan in her sleeping mode looks good. Oh well, that is just what a lovely girl should be. Great.

Oh god, this sound is much cuter than uguu~. I fully, absolutely, greatly, firmly and (*add more great words here*) vote Auuu~ to be the cuter sound compared to the uguu~ by Ayu. Well, also because I am biased because I really hate dumb girls. Dumb girls turn me off, big time.

Anyway, we see the introduction of two new characters that are possibly having some strong leads to Yuiichi eventually. Both of them are nameless for now so I will give them nicknames for now. Considering that I am not one who has watched the previous Kanon or have bothered spoiling myself on the endings of the gals, I have absolutely no idea what their names are.

One is a shy and sickly girl (my guess) who seldom travels out of her house and hence bought her groceries in bulk. I presume she is sick because she is wearing too much clothing even for a winter. I will call her shy-chan. After being informed that her name is Shiori and she is mentioned in episode 1, she will be named Shiori.

Another is a girl who charges out at the end of the episode, trying to kick Yuuichi as she has a grudge against him. Making Auuu~ sounds and all that, with some fangs, i will call her Fang-chan (not to confuse with LOL OR FANG-TAN, who is tsuruya, one of the cutest green-haired anime gals ever in history).

That said, time for a short episode summary and my conspiracy theories that will make you laugh because I am such a bad guesser.

Episode summary

Yuuichi woke up, with the alarm clock sounding just like Nayuki. Nayuki’s room started to ring with tons of alarm clocks, as Nayuki was still happily sleeping. Yuuichi immediately shut off all the alarm clocks and shook Nayuki to wake her up. As they had breakfast, Yuuichi declined the offer to have jam as he does not have a sweet tooth. Akiko gave him a special jam that he nearly died eating because it tasted totally horrible. He also declined the offer to have another piece of bread with that jam. As they traveled to school, Nayuki asked if he could remember the street he was in, but he could not as Nayuki felt it was a a bit sad. They then picked up the pace as they were getting late.

As they reached the class, Yuuichi gave a brief introduction and Nayuki was very excited as she waved her hands in the class. After class, Nayuki was about to go for track training and she shocked Yuuichi when she said she told everyone in the morning that they were staying together. Yuuichi did not want needless gossip. However, Nayuki lost her footing and fell on two seniors, Mai and ermm another genki girl. With that, Nayuki left Yuuichi alone as he wanted to roam around the campus. However, he got lost after realizing that the school was really big. Luckily, he met Kaori who helped him find his way out. She also mentioned that he was as what Nayuki said he was, a bit strange.

As he traveled to town to buy uden ingredients as Akiko had instructed for dinner, he met up with Ayu who knocked onto him despite his attempt to avoid as he told Ayu to move to the direction where she held his chopsticks. It did not work as Ayu was left-handed. Ayu once again ran away from the taiyaki seller after not bringing money and a doggie this time. As they ran, they realized that they were lost. Ayu then realized that Yuuichi was the same Yuiichi who she knew 7 years ago and was so happy as she had suspicions already. As she attempted to hug him, he evaded and Ayu banged onto the tree.

As she banged on the tree, snow fell onto a shy and sickly girl who dropped all her things. With a bit of teasing and the likes along the way, Ayu eventually was glad that she was able to meet Yuuichi again. However, during the conversation where we realized that Shiori was a junior, he also realized that Ayu was the same age as him. Shocking news, as Shiori guided them out to the town area before going home. Yuuichi and Ayu then left, having a pinky finger promise to meet again. Yuuichi tried to ask how to contact Ayu but she had ran away before he could do anything.

Buying his ingredients, he was assaulted by a girl (Fang-chan), who looked dangerous and said that she had a grudge against Yuuichi. However, her attacks were weak and she said it was due to her being very hungry. She then fainted, saying auuuuu~

Thoughts

Hmm, I kinda like this set up episode, trying to add a bit of character introduction for the important characters. I really like the new character, Fang-chan, because she seems to be an absolute tsundere. Perhaps, she is just a very violent person with very weak attacks that are really amusing to me. Also, she has fangs that are a total moe~ point. So yea, a good character.

I also quite like the shy Shiori, who seemed to be rather friendly and her scarf like clothing is cute as well. I mean, all the characters are really cute in Kanon, which really helped. Ayu is also quite cute in this episode, even though I must admit that uguu~ is losing its charm on me as I have a strong dislike for dumb characters.

Now on to the conspiracy theories that I feel. You know, after the fox in episode 1, I have a really wild guess that Fang-chan is in fact the fox. I have no idea how she is a fox and how she has a grudge against Yuuichi but considering the context of Kanon and remembering AIR, i am sure that there is a possibility it will happen. I am just guessing since I avoid trying to spoil myself unless someone tells me it’s true. Also, I am a bad guesser so those who knows the story can laugh all you want.

Also, with the image forming when they had the promise (Ayu and Yuuichi) and that Yuuichi had a slight flashback meant something I feel. Ayu also mentioned that Yuuichi made a promise when they were young that he will return. For some reason, I have a feeling that the key to Yuuichi forgetting everything about the town was due to a trigger caused by Ayu. Maybe, Ayu is an angel or spirit that has caused some distortion of reality fabric or something.

Well, I am guessing that due to the fact that in the OP or ED, they showed her in angel wings which meant that she is probably not fully human. My guess anyway.

Next episode, even though the preview says nothing really.

I wonder which person required SO MANY alarm clocks to wake up from their sleep. Hmm, it is pretty scary how much of a sleepyhead Nayuki can be.

And yes, the next project of the godly Kyoto animation has finally reached my shores. I am so excited over Kanon for the longest time now and when I was informed that it is available on Eclipse, I rushed over to download it. The time to wait while the download slowly trickles in is really long and it feels like I waited an eternity for it. When I got it, I felt like crying.

It is a dream come true. This time, I had very high expectations of Kanon. Did it fail me with the first episode? No way, the graphics were top notch, as expected from KyoAni. The story seems to be progressing at a steady pace too.

In that snow field seven years ago…

Characters

Nayuki: She seems to be rather ditsy and immature, with her mannerisms rather amusing as she forced Yuiichi to say good morning when it’s morning and good night when it’s night. She is Yuiichi’s cousin and Yuiichi is staying in her house currently. She seems to be an animal lover and has rather idealistic and an innocent personality. I quite like her because she seems to be really cute, and dont tell me she likes Yuiichi…Oh man, she is funny.

Yuiichi: The main male lead. He has not been around in the town for seven years and it seems that he cannot remember any of the memories that he had when he was a child. He did have recurring dreams of a girl calling out to him but those memories disappear almost immediately. He seems to be pretty normal, with a bit of sarcasm in him. He is going to study in the same class as Nayuki soon and staying at her house until he graduates from high school.

Ayu: Uguu~. Will this be the new catch phrase? We have “gao” for Air and this uguu~ is really addictive and cute. She is a gal that is extremely queer. I mean, which gal has such a mixed up reason when she was the one walking away from a seller (while not buying for her food) and she said she was getting chased. She also kept turning around when she needed to see her bag. She has a bag with wings and she met up with Yuiichi before when they were young…She remembered too. Yuiichi did not…

Episode summary

It started firstly, with the meeting of Yuiichi with Nayuki, as Yuiichi had waited two hours for Nayuki to pick him up. I like the monologue of the dream that started the show after the meeting, talking about the red snow in the dream that is flowing down, as the memories of the dream were locked up. Even as the colors in the dream faded away, the memories still remain, somewhere.

We then see Yuiichi waking up from his bed, wondering where he was. He looked through the window to see snow as he stepped out of his room, seeing Nayuki hunting for her uniform. She had track training for today during the winter break, and was looking around for it. As she left, she told Yuiichi that she would be bringing Yuiichi around the town, as Yuiichi would be staying in this town forever and ever (somehow, these words spooked me…), even though Yuiichi mentioned he would stay at least until the graduation of high school.

As he was helping Akiko (Nayuki’s mother) get rid of the snow in the pathway, he noticed that Akiko did the snow shovelling very fast. After the effort, Yuiichi rested in the couch, with Nayuki rushing back. Yuiichi commented that Nayuki was just the same as before, and she pouted, saying that Yuiichi meant that she was immature. They went around the town, visiting various areas before reaching the school. Two possible future main leads were shown interacting with a wild dog in the school. Yuiichi and Nayuki went past the hospital and Yuiichi seemed to have bad experiences with hospitals. They also met up with Nayuki’s classmate, Kaori and another male classmate that was a porter of sorts.

They then reached the hill top, overlooking the whole town. Yuiichii commented about how he cannot remember anything about the town, whether he liked it previously or anything at all. A fox then appeared, with the animal lover Nayuki trying to get the fox to come over. It left. The scene then changed with Nayuki buying some groceries from the supermarket. Nayuki asked Yuiichi to follow her but he was more worried about tagging along with her. With that, he said he would wait for her outside, and she said he had to promise to wait and not leave.

While Yuiichi was waiting, a girl carrying a bag with wings ran over him and dragged him along to a cafe, saying that she was being chased by someone. She was actually rambling about some things scaring her when she had ran away when she had not paid for her food. Yuiichi dragged her back and paid for the food that she took. She ate happily while they went around, and she stated that her name was Ayu. When Yuiichi mentioned who he was, she seemed to remember something but left, saying that she would meet him again and pay him back.

That was when Yuiichi realized that Nayuki was waiting for him and she sulked all the way back home, saying that he’s a liar. She eventually relented, saying that she’s late. A dream sequence then occured when Yuiichi felt asleep in his room, with the situation of the supermarket happening when they were kids. Nayuki going and asking Yuiichi to wait. Yuiichi meeting up with Ayu then and she was crying…

Thoughts

Kanon is top notch stuff. Even though there is nothing really happening in the first episode, the graphics, with the nice OP/ED to boot, has given this series a nice start. There are also some minor introductions of other major characters that will be appearing soon. I am already liking this and it’s a definite yes that I will blog on for this series. This is probably the first series that I have openly stated that I will blog on, but it deserves it.

It’s Kyoto animation anyway and I am biased toward them. Some mentioned that the character design, with the giant eyes looked really scary. I actually like this art style because it makes the characters look cuter. Yuiichi lacks a bit of emotions and character for now, even though I feel that his character will develop better with time, since he is the centre of a harem.

I do not know but Nayuki seems to be hiding something and the likes. Maybe i am overly sensitive but I got a feeling she knows much more than what she seems for now. Ayu too. Maybe everyone is hiding something which is the reason why Yuiichi cannot remember anything that happened in his childhood times. Ayu is probably the key to unlocking this mystery. What is her involvement with Yuiichi? Who is Ayu?…

I wonder….Episode 2 seems to be Yuiichi going to the same school as Nayuki. Interesting, can’t wait to watch more. =/
