Asatte no Houkou is in no doubt one of the best slice of life series in the anime world of 2006. However, is it a lolicon heavenly keep with the extremely lovable characters or a series that speaks volumes about how a slice of life series should be done?

Both are applicable, to a great degree.

Story introduction

Asatte no Houkou is a very idyllic series that talks about the fate of three people, or in particular the fate of two women. One was a small young girl of 12, wanting to grow older so that she will no longer be a burden to her brother, Hiro. Her name is Karada. Another wanted to escape and start life afresh as a child so that she can relive the sad life that she has. Her name is Shouko. What happens when the two collide in the middle of a wishing stone that is often believed to grant wishes? What is the link between Shouko, Hiro and Karada and what will change in their relationship?

Review of last episode

The last episode of the series was sadly a letdown compared to the rest of the whole series. Even though most of the issues in the end are resolved, there is just this certain rushed feeling to the whole issue. I cannot explain what is exactly wrong for the last episode but it makes me yearn for something more powerful, something more wonderful and perhaps something more of a miracle. It is perhaps of my wishful thinking that I want to see perhaps just one episode of how they will live happily together, once they are restored back to their usual self.

I like the resolution of the various characters, finally realizing what is most important to them in their lives. For a long while, they have been lost around the pathway of life, with the resolution meaning that what they have found what is most important to them: Happiness.

General thoughts

The thing about a slice of life series is the line when the show ends. I have said it before and I will say it once again. A slice of life series is like a journey, with generally no apparent goal or end. It is generally about the characters and you have to experience, love and enjoy this particular special experience that the characters bring about. In that sense, the last episode is very special because a special goal is set. Karada finally understood the meaning of truly growing up, and that it was not as easy as it seemed. Even as an adult, she was still a child, which made her realize the limitations that what she wished was not exactly what she wanted.

To me, the most surprising changes that was created by the whole series are by Shouko. It is initially unclear whether Shouko wanted to return to her childhood. She seemed to be resisting the attempt but it is clear with the various episodes that concentrated on her that she had a very lonely childhood that she wished to fix. That is why, inside her heart, she wanted to start afresh, in order to replace the lonely childhood that she had. The child that brought her back to play, even though others said that she would not, was an extremely big step for Shouko. Always shunned when she was a child because she was so docile to play with the other kids, someone finally made the first step for her. To me, I was warmed by that feeling.

Hiro also finally faced his fears. On one hand, he futilely tried to hide the fact that he was not the blood brother of Karada, trying to hide the knowledge that he had abandoned so much for her, even though she clearly knew it. I made no attempt to hide my disgust of Hiro for the whole series, who I consider in a very mild language, to be a total shameless, gutless, crappy escapist who always ran away when someone needed him. It was a good thing at the end that he finally found out what was wrong and removed the burden from him. With that, his hair also was manageable and you can actually see his eyes. Wow, it really means looking forward to the front, bad pun intended.

Lolicon heaven territory

I honestly think that Asatte no Houkou, considering that it is a rather serious slice of life series, is in fact a hidden minefield for all lolicons out there who loves cute little characters. Honestly, you have a 12 year girl hidden inside a 21 year hot body, the 12 year girl herself who is extremely cute as it can be seen from the above picture.

You then have a really cynical and spectacle wearing Shouko. She is probably not what you generally consider to be the sweet cute type but more like the cool cute type. Don’t ever get me started on explaining the major differences between the two because it is a whole post that I am dreaded to do. I think someone by the name known as Stripey might have a better idea and explain to you in great detail on the differences of various types of cuteness in the lolis.

However, where in the world can you have a 2 in 1 loli ready made for goddess ranked abilities and another spectacle loli for good measure? Unless you are seriously screwed up (which is an irony by itself since lolicons are generally pretty screwed up anime watchers, in a warped sense that you think that beach episodes are the greatest due to fanservice galore), it is almost a sin for any self-confessed lolicon that loves cute stuff NOT to watch Asatte no Houkou. It is a total lolifest in anyway you see it, seriously.

In a more serious tone though, Asatte no Houkou had all the great qualities for an anime that will be remembered: Sheer likable characters, good graphical design, excellent story telling and a compelling setting. This is by far one of the slice of life series that I will remember for a long while.

Yes, this is yet another edition of I.D Analysis, where the faithful, cunning and awfully disturbing clones of Impzie will bring you the latest summary and thoughts in the Impzie’s Destructive way. The fact that they are all clones meant that they are unable to fathom lengthy writing, hence everything is in a concise, bit size fashion.

Move on, move on. The clones have decided that this article will be devoted to Happiness!, Yamato as well as Asatte Episode 8. Due to love, courage and honesty of the love in cute characters, they will move forth! (aka, time for summary + thoughts). The clones have also been temporarily discharged for duty for the review of Asatte Episode 8, due to Impz’s love for that episode.

————————————————–

1. Happiness! Episode 8

Episode summary

Everyone went over to the beach for some relaxation at the school clubhouse after Koyuki applied for the clubhouse using everyone’s names in the club to apply. Jun told Yuuma to treat Haruhi nicer due to the fact that he was hostile with her for being a magic user. They then went on the common beach games, with tons of fanservice to spare and Yuuma trying to improve relations with Haruhi. They then had a hunt to the top, with Jun giving Yuuma and Haruhi a wrong map so that they could have time together.

Ibuki was seen doing something suspicious as they arrived at the base of the waterfall. Haruhi decided to swim around but a log dropped down, with her trying to use magic. Yuuma shoved her to safety but scolded her that she did not need to use her magic. Eventually, everyone arrived and it was night time for dinner. Haruhi was seen practicing away from everyone. Ibuki’s weapon was there to get the wolves to attack Haruhi. Haruhi tried to avoid using her magic but eventually did so to save Yuuma. Yuuma then told her he did not hate magic and he only hated it when it’s abused. They then got together in a better friendship after this experience. Ibuki seemed to be convinced that Haruhi was the daughter of “that woman”.

Thoughts

Not much story as yet. However, the amount of fanservice is so gratifying that it is probably good for most fans. I am not impressed since the show has been relatively shifted from average to downright mediocre. I am rather disappointed, considering they have only 12 episodes (or 13?) to play with. At least, it seems that Ibuki has an agenda with Haruhi, calling her the child of “that woman”. So, what is going on? Please make Happiness! a happy trip for me at the end please.

————————————————–

2. Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge Episode 8

Episode summary

Kyouhei suddenly suggested to have a steamboat as he ordered Sunako to prepare one for him. They then went to the market section, with everyone going haywire with the appearance of Kyouhei’s sparkling bisheness. All of them also gave them free food, since it was a great celebration that a scary gal like Sunako could find such a handsome boyfriend. Kyouhei also bought crabs and the likes, with Sunako’s money purse immediately turning empty. She was very sad over it. Eventually, the Kyouhei lovers came and turned it to a total riot, with all the ingredients toppled over, with no money for a Kotatsu.

The guys then worked at a restaurant, with Kyouhei bringing back some food for Sunako. Sunako also learned that Kyouhei had never experienced steamboat with a family at all and decided to make a Kotatsu with the carpenter. Kyouhei also got free gifts in the market since he attracted tons of fans to buy. Everyone was getting worried for the two of them, since it was winter and they did not get back yet. As they opened the door, both of them were facing downwards in the snow. All of them were impressed how Sunako was so multi-talented as Kyouhei was happy that they had a steamboat and Kotatsu. Sunako was also happy quietly that Kyouhei had his wish fulfilled.

Thoughts

Not much laughs in this episode. However, I like the little bit of story development between Kyouhei and Sunako, as well as a glimpse at the background of Kyouhei’s family. I cannot help but feel that Yamato can be so much better with another director in hand. Still, it is a decent show that is marginally average currently. I hope that I get more laughs and the fact that the SD Sunako is a bit lesser in this episode pleases me. They need to have more “cool” moments for her.

——————————————–

3. Asatte no Houkou Episode 8

Episode summary

Karada left the house as she went to first search for a flat to rent but found the price too expensive. She then went to a fastfood restaurant trying to eat and then to find work, but realized she needed a resume of sorts. She then hunted around with very little money and her naivety to find a job, but failed to find any. She was then approached by three gangsters, asking her for tea and the likes. She only barely escaped, only to hit a sleazy red light district, as she ran away once again. She then hid under a staircase in the heavy rain, lonely being alone.

We then had the flashback where Karada realized she had a brother in USA, as well that she was not their real daughter. Still, her parents adored her but when they died, Hiro rushed back to her side. She knew that Hiro always avoided questions of his life in the US and after seeing the pictures of Shouko and Hiro, she understood what exactly she had stolen: his happiness. Hence, she decided to leave, only for the taxi driver to call Hiro up (she had dropped her resume). Hiro then saw Karada who was leaving on the train to another city. He tried to stop but the train door closed, with a mouthed sorry and thank you from a teary-eyed Karada.

Thoughts

This is a really magnificent episode. The song of Kasa playing in the background built a really melancholic mood to the whole flashback and it is painful to see the raw gushing of emotions. I came with a bout of tears after this episode, because the innocent Karada’s resolve to leave was….plain painful. I understand why she is doing it, but it is a really badly planned idea. Still, she is only 12, so who can’t blame her for thinking that way?

I am also very worried for her. If she was just a tad unluckier, she would have been raped or something without anyone knowing. Even though she has an adult body, she is but a child, fending off danger in a big city that she has never seen in her entire life. This is definitely way too dangerous already for a kid, and i fear for her safety. It is hard and probably someone stone-hearted to not sympathize with Karada. Sigh, this show is just darn good.

Lastly, the next week’s preview seems to be about Karada’s friend. Honestly, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO KARADA. I could care less about anyone already.

Time for I.D.A (Impzie’s Destructive analysis) once again!

All right, this will suffice for a quick thought and roll for Sumomomo momomo~, Asatte no Houkou and Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge. To add, I cannot believe how I forgot all about Kiniro no Chord. I only realize I forgot about this anime yesterday and caught up with it. I will not blog the previous six entries but I will go straight with episode 7. It might also be an active entry (aka standalone) if I can afford the time.

Onwards, my good clones! Summarize and review!

1. Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge Episode 7

Summary

Episode 7 deals with a new gangster that is hunting down Kyouhei to become the strongest person in the school. He came to school to mess up, only to fall in love with Sunako (nice choice, gangsta). Eventually, in an attempt to get Sunako, he sent his two lackeys to observe Sunako, only to see her sunbathing her dolls and the likes. They then escaped, only to tag along Hiro. Sunako gave chase, only to be trapped by the gangsters as they held Hiro captive.

The rest of the gang less Kyouhei decided to help but was captured. Kyouhei saved the day but as they pinned Sunako down, Kyouhei was unable to fight back. The inevitable came as Sunako went on berserk mode seeing her precious Kyouhei bashed up for her as she went for a triple flip suplex on the gangster.

Thoughts

Interesting episode that is much better than episode 5 and 6 at least in the laugh section. I find that the theme of each episode is very standard. They get into a situation, they messed up, Kyouhei saves the day, Sunako saves Kyouhei. I am not complaining since I laughed, but it feels almost like a good premise wasted.

———————————————–

2. Asatte no Houkou Episode 7

Summary

It is Hiro’s 28th birthday as Hiro forgot about it once again. Shouko reminisced about how he always forgot his birthday and she had in fact tried to make a roast chicken that turned to a charcoal chicken instead. She then threw it away, inviting him for a treat outside but always disappointed. Karada then suggested that they would make a cake for him as they went out, buying a recipe book and then the ingredients for the cake. As they finally got everything, they went to Shouko’s apartment, as Shouko unpacked some of her goods, as well as some books that she could bring back to Hiro’s house.

They then went on to bake the cake, with Shouko being completely unhelpful in doing the chores. Eventually, it was done, with some improvising from Karada, as they waited for Hiro to be back. At night, Hiro went out to buy cigarettes, as Shouko tagged along. Karada, being alone, finally saw the picture of Hiro and Shouko together stacked in one of the books that Shouko brought from her house. The next day, Karada was not around.

Thoughts

I do not understand why Karada left. Did she feel bad that she’s imposing and the reason why Hiro and Shouko broke up? Anyway, this episode continues on slowly but it definitely does wonders because of the idyllic style of story telling. I am really enjoying this series and the only reason why I am not making a full entry for this is because there are a lot of people blogging this and I will like to reserve my time to anime less touched. Still, this is understandably one of the best series out there right now. You can’t go wrong watching this.

—————————————–

3. Sumomomo momomo~ Episode 7

Summary

They finally got the truth out from the Tiger guy that there was a war going on. As Koushi’s father explained, there were two factions in the north and south. In order to stop the infighting, they paired up Momoko and Koushi to relieve any conflict. However, there were resentment in the camps as they sent assassins to attack them, in order to start a new war. Koushi was then more sympathetic and was blushing when he was with Momoko alone. He then convinced himself that he should simply concentrate on his work and not bother about this.

At school, he was leaving school with Sanae. When Momoko asked him to go home together and that she would protect him, he called her a nuisance and left with Sanae. They then met up with some bullies and Sanae was punched on the face while defending him. He then picked himself up as he remembered how annoyed he was to be a coward and powerless. He fought the bullies but lost badly. Still, he felt good. As he reached home with wounds and the likes, Momoko was very worried and wanted to put some dressing on his wounds but eventually withdrew because she remembered how Koushi called her a nuisance. Koushi felt bad as he called her back to help her, with their relationship developing of sorts.

Thoughts

This episode has slightly less laughter but there is some good character development. I admit that I find Momoko slightly annoying at the start but she has gained my favor to be the proper pairing. She is the only one that stayed with Koushi all the way, never complaining even though she is abused so badly. Sanae is more like someone that Koushi wanted to talk to normally but it seems more like a crush. Inoha, even though I love her, is not possible because she feels more like a imouto. She’s still darn sexy though.

———————————–

4. Kiniro No Corda Episode 7

Summary

Hino was still disturbed after the close proximity encounter with Hihata, as she was unable to concentrate with her violin practice. However, she was taken away by the teacher to do some grocery shopping with Shimizu and Fuyuumi. At the house, Tsukimori completely messed up with heating food using a microwave and Ryou had to do some fried rice for them. Hihata also accidently drunk Hino’s drink. When they got back, Hihata tried to explain it but eventually flee the scene as we know a bit about Tsukimori’s mother being famous. At night, Hino was practicing her violin and Hino joined in to play a beautiful duet.

As they returned home, they had the second test with the theme being “trust”. The reporter was chasing Tsukimori all around the place, asking him for quotes as well as the news that his mother was going to listen to his recital in the concorde. He avoided the reporter various times. Hino was practicing in one of the rooms and was about to leave when Tsukimori suddenly charged in, covering her mouth in order to escape from the reporter. He then chased her away as she felt herself blushing and her heart rapidly beating. She then realized that his hand was cool to the touch and it seemed that he was with a fever. As she wanted to get help, he held her hand as he fell asleep, with his body lying toward her.

Thoughts

This is pretty interesting to say the very least. It seems that Tsukimori suffers from an inferiority complex toward his parents due to the pressure created by his talented elders. It is quite nice to see some weakness in him, rather than simply the harsh and cool person that he is. It is always nice to see Hino’s various strange face expressions too and I am wondering what kind of music she will play next. Fun, fun, fun!

————————————-

That’s it for the fastfood I.D.A review!

Do comment if you want this to be a regular feature for series that are less blogged. I will be doing this for Kiniro No chord…ermm something of that title ~_~

Hmm, is is just me but Shouko is getting cuter and cuter as the episodes run by. I do not know but this screenshot really makes the sleeping Shouko look so darn cute.

Eh….Ok, i will talk more about a certain disturbing thought that I have later. I swear that it has gone through all your heads as well, but it only hit me completely now.

———————————

Episode summary

It was a normal morning as Hiro went for work, while Shouka went to buy daily needs for the household. After they left, Tetsu went over to the Hiro household and met up with Karada in adult form at the door. He could not recognise her and asked where Karada went, only to get the same answer that “Karada” was at a relative’s house. He then went around still to look for Karada, while Karada followed him around as he walked around asking shopkeepers and the children in the playground.

As she peeked through her position, Tetsu disappeared as she went to lie on one of the giant trees. Tetsu then asked her why she was following him and she made some lame excuse that he needed an adult to take care and protect him. Tetsu also mentioned how he could feel that Karada was still here. Eventually, Karada tagged along with Tetsu as he went over back to the school.

As they reached their class, he explained how Karada was so small sized and often could not see the board. He also teased the nervous Karada when she checked her shoe box, saying that Karada could not hide there even though she was small. We also saw that flashback where Karada teased him in class during an egg breaking cooking lesson and how Tetsu used too much strength all the time and messed up the whole situation. That was when he was given the nickname “Crispy Amino?” for that strength.

As they reached the bridge, he mentioned how he tried to find Karada during the firework in the festival as he assumed many people would be there. However, he was also slightly surprised how Karada was in fact similiar to the “loli Karada” in her actions, especially when she reacted to the firework festival as though she had been there herself. As they ran up to a temple area, Karada was caught out of breath as she went to get a drink in the resting area. Tetsu then guessed that Karada was Hiro’s girlfriend and she simply gestured to agree.

After that, she asked why Tetsu was so concerned about her and whether it was because she was unreliable. He said it was the fact that he just needed to protect her and he felt that Karada was way more reliable and capable than him. He did miss her a lot. They then went through a dark forest, with Karada having the feeling that she was here before. In fact, at a slope, she fell, with Tetsu extending a hand to her and calling Karada’s name.

The flashback came with Karada actually visiting this place before. As Tetsu realized what he was doing, he pulled back his hands. They then went through a sealed tunnel and found a peaceful clearing, where the source of water at the temple was. Karada then added that he should bring Karada here when she came back and she would love it.

As Karada returned, Shouko and Hiro were waiting for her as they were worried. At night, Karada asked how she could make up with a friend if they could not meet. Eventually, she sent a letter to Tetsu, talking about the “trip” she had, making Tetsu feel good, with him smiling happily over the postcard.

———————–

Thoughts

I apologise but when I first watch this episode, a really really strange thought came to me. I was thinking if they do not go back to normal, Karada pairs up with Tetsu, and Shouko pairs up with Hiro, would it not be a lolicon paradise since Karada and Hiro are technically paedohpiles.

…

I told you it’s a weird thought, no?

However, to the episode proper, I really fully enjoyed the episode. The idyllic and slow pace of the show makes me feel that Aria feeling, where there is nothing happening, yet it could still touch you deeply. Of course, the way that Aria and Asatte no Houkou touches the human psyche is very different. However, it still stems down to the fact that it portrays comfortable feelings toward people that are as similar as us, yet facing problems that were out of their capabilities.

I do not know why but I am starting to love the lifestyle of this show, so much so as another anime blogger that has inspired me to start this blog, Garten.

I quote him saying…

“Although nothing much happens in this episode, it’s hard not to be charmed by the simple and laidback lifestyle of the characters. I think this is partly why I like the series. It’s easy to get immersed in the wonderful background paintings created for the series. It feels as if you’re actually in Kanouchou as well, looking around the temple and the waterspring. When I went to Japan last year, I lived in this small town called Okazaki. I think that was one of the best times in my life. I really wish I could do it all over again. There is nothing more fulfilling than biking around a quiet neighbourhood where there are still many trees and vegetations. Speaking of laidback lifestyle, I must once again commend the soundtrack that is composed by Mitsumune Shinkichi. Most of them do a very good job in conveying the feel of laidback lifestyle. The first one that appeared in this episode also reminds me of farming RPG like Harvest Moon for some reason.”

From Garten in Memento</align>

It is really true. I feel that the simple and sweet melody of Asatte brings you more intimately to the world of these characters, making it much easier for you to accept the things that have happened. Even though nothing seems to happen in the physical, many different things had in fact happened for everyone in this show.

The strong concern and feelings that Tetsu had with Karada is with a pure heart and it is really hard not to feel a bit of sympathy for him. It is yet heartwarming that both Tetsu and Karada has maturity that was way beyond their assumed years and it is pretty impressive.

I also like the trusting relationship that is growing between Karada, Hiro and Shouko. I feel that all three of them have to learn to accept what their wishes entail before the ending provides a beautiful ending where they are finally restored to how they were at the start. That is what I feel to be possibly one of the most fulfiling conclusions that Asatte no Houkou can take: the epitome of the human spirit in action.

Will we see that? I hope so.

Don’t you want to help her?

Shouko is really cute. It’s almost disturbing how this Shouko-centric episode is so funny. I found myself in stitches in some of the scenes, even though Asatte should not be a show where I am laughing so hard. Still, there has been a sense of development in this episode, as we see how the three people are trying to change their lives to adjust for their new selves.

Episode summary

They went back to the house, with Karada preparing breakfast for the two sleepyheads. As Hiro went to work, Karada and Shouko stayed at home, with Karada doing all the housework. Karada seemed to worry for Shouko, taking all the work from her. Shouko then went out to the library, trying to find out more about the stone and the likes. As she returned home, she saw some kids playing “Catch the monster” which is a childhood game that I played (and enjoyed).

A new girl, Kotomi, who just moved in from town saw Shouko who was sitting on the bench, looking at the kids play. She then tried to get Karada to play, but Karada took her leave, since she had bad experiences when she was young and denied the opportunity to play with them. She was probably a loner kid. She then ran away, with the kids looking at her.

With that, we see that this Kotomi girl is in fact an acquaintance of Touko as she was at his house, talking to her mom. She then criticized Touko to do what was required to be done, rather than being fickle minded about the whole issue. At home, Hiro did a simple meal for the other two, the first time he had done it since a week ago when they changed bodies. Shouko was about to clean the dishes when Hiro pointed out the “promise” paper that Karada stuck to where the person who did not cook had to clean the dishes.

As they slept, Shouko continued to think about the relationship and trust between Karada and Hiro as they slept together. The next day, Karada was about to help Shouko arrange the dishes but Hiro stopped her, telling her to allow Shouko some responsibility. As Hiro left for work, Karada wanted to pick a rice from his shirt but Hiro moved back, shocked at the boobs of his sister…(ermm yea). Shouko took the hint and picked it instead. They then left together, with Hiro thanking Shouko for being a mediator. Shouko was angry because she felt she was there for being there but was not honest about it.

Shouko is then in the park again, as the children played. One of the girls asked Shouko but she had the same experience where the boy said that “she does not want to play with us”. She was about to turn when the girl moved one more step and tapped her as a monster. Shouko then played with them and actually enjoyed it. Karada was however nervous when Shouko did not return, finally finding her and giving a hug. She was clearly worried.

At the end, Touko realized about Karada being “found”. It was in fact a lie to Touko’s sister about Karada going to a relative’s house.

———————————–

Thoughts

Well, I am thinking whether Touko’s sister knows the truth. Chances are that she in fact knows what the hell is happening and that there was something suspicious about the three of them holding hands. In one of the scenes, she did show Hiro holding hands with Karada and Shouko and I just have that feeling that the sister is way smarter to detect it completely.

It is also clear that Shouko is finally coming to terms with her identity. It might seem to me that she has unconsciously wished to restart her life once again, even though she would not admit it. She seems to be a person that often rejects the truth in order to display a strong side. She is practically not honest about her feelings and it is clear from the reactions she had with Hiro. I bet if she just flared up and revealed her emotions, the bind on her will immediately disappear.

With that, I must point back that there is this very natural flow of things with this show. Nothing really dramatic happens in the show but there is just this strange charm that gets you back wondering why you enjoy it so much. It is just the dynamics of the three characters that intrigues me and I must admit that i am happily enjoying this little piece.

Is it me who is slow but I see a pattern. It seems that each episode is actually a character-centric one. I mean, we have Karada last week, now is Shouko and next week seems to be Karada once again. I do not know why they did it, but the flow of the story feels so good with this switching of perspectives.

I think this is good honestly because i am quietly surprised how this little story has captured me whole heartedly. I would also add that I find the relationship between Touko and Karada to be rather interesting and it seems that they will explore this next week.

Sigh, the agony of waiting and exams coming ^_^

Awww, why did you make the lolicious Karada cry like that?

Sigh, Karada is really cute big time now. At least the resolution for episode 4 was a nice one, and I really enjoyed this episode a lot, much more so than Episode 3. Even though the quality of the animation dipped slightly (Hiro and Karada had funny-looking faces in some of the screenshots), the nice emotional feel-good factor was there and that made my day.

A brief summary and my thoughts continued….

Episode 4 Rating: A-

—————————————————

Episode summary

It started with a flashback of Hiro and Karada when they were at the festival one year ago. They had gone to this high spot to see the fireworks and it was an enjoyable experience as we returned back to reality.

The three were in Shouko’s apartment, with Hiro shocked that the grown up girl was his sister. He could not believe it no matter how much Shouko tried to convince him, and eventually he called Karada “that girl”. Hiro then left, leaving Karada very hurt as the person she wished most to believe in her did not and rejected her. Shouko chased Hiro who was getting to the elevator and eventually kicked him and scolded him for being an insensitive prick (i added the prick for effect :p). As Karada was in the room, she started to wish that she did not wish on the wishing stone.

After that, a door bell rang and Hiro was at the door. Hiro did come back and rested while lying his back on the wall. As he woke up, he saw Karada doing some cooking as he faked to be sleeping. He then saw the normal mannerisms of his sister, as he consumed the breakfast. He probably knew that it was Karada because of how the steamed egg was made. Then, it was Karada’s classmate and her sister talking about Karada and the festival as the sister mentioned about many people going. He then sneak off when he was supposed to be studying.

As Hiro was in the clinic, his colleague noted that he looked to be in better spirits. He also received a call from Shouko, asking him to go for the festival. Shouko, on the other hand, was dressing up Karada in the yukata that she could not wear anymore, as they went to the festival to meet up with Hiro.

It was a rather awkward scene as both of them kept quiet. Karada actually wanted to leave but Shouko held her on. As they walked silently around the festival, Shouka asked Karada about what they did in the festival the day before. Given some time to be silent, Shouka noted that Hiro already had the feeling that it was Karada.

As Shouko took the opportunity to leave the two alone by grabbing some takoyaki, the two went to the hilltop where they stood one year ago. Hiro mentioned about his sister and the day of the festival. Karada eventually broke down and started to say how she wished she did not wish for it. She felt that she was a burden to Hiro and wanted to grow up. However, by growing up this way, she was still unable to be a true adult and was still a burden. She continued to cry until Hiro smiled and said “Karada-san”.

With that, they came down together happily, with Shouko taking her leave. However, Hiro said that Karada is very stubborn when it comes to it and Shouko finally agreed to stay together as they walked back home together.

———————————

Thoughts

I am really appreciating a lot of Shouko’s character. She has to firstly put aside her hatred and anger toward Karada for stealing the man of her dreams and protect the emotionally fragile child that was in an adult’s body. Moreover, she has her own problems of being in a child’s body and still have to support the other two. I find it very admirable, which is why it is really hard to hate Shouko even though she’s petty and vindictive.

The way she helps the two get back together was really a very sweet scene and I almost went awww with it. It is really a very nice plot movement, considering they are already acceptable with each other. I must say that I still have no idea how the story will go from now but I think there is still the resolvement of Shouko as a child and I think they are tackling that for the next episode.

Also, I like the part when Hiro accepted his sister by calling her Karada-san. It was probably hard to persuade yourself that your young loli-istic sister suddenly turned to a hot babe. Ermm, ok that last thought came from me. But anyway, I really feel that considering that he has bind himself so much, that warm smile was the first smile I have ever seen from Hiro. That idiot should go cut his hair or something.

Karada is really like a child. Sorry, Karada, but you are. She really does not fit an adult, but it’s for certain since it is only her body and not her mind that has reached the adult stage. Oh well. Anyway, this is a sweet little show and the next episode seems to be the same style as usual. I just hope that the random dips of graphics was just a blip that will disappear soon.

Shoukou is reviving her childhood. Still, she is hell cute in kid form.

The third episode deals with Shoukou and how she is adapting to the whole situation of turning into a kid. We see less of Karada this episode as it is a Shoukou-centric section, with flashbacks and memories of Hiro and the likes. In a way, we realize a bit more about the relationship of the two and I guess it’s understable why the two people did the things they did.

It was just that….it’s sad.

Episode summary

Shoukou and Karada went out for shopping, trying to get used of their new lives. Karada tried out various bras and clothes while Shoukou did as well, and she struck a nice pose for a cute dress she was trying out. As she blushed and overheard Karada saying something was cute, she thought Karada refered to her.

However, it was in fact a child’s bed Karada was referring but Shoukou reminded her that she was an adult as the salesman recommended her some things. Shoukou was starting to speak until the assistant gave her a queer look as she refered to Karada as the sister. Karada was however unsure of many of the things that were said. With some hiccups, the bed was finally moved to their house.

As dinner was prepared by Karada, Shoukou bathe and was thinking of the new body she had. As she came up, she was surprised how well Karada can cook. After their meal, they slept, only to see Karada crying and missing Hiro a lot. She wondered what would be life for them now.

They had to adapt somehow. As Karada was out one day, Hiro came over suddenly and Shoukou said she was the younger sister of Shoukou. As they talked more, Hiro realized that the “little sister” sounded exactly like Shoukou but did not place the link between the little sister and Shoukou. Hiro assumed that the “little sister” had heard everything from Shoukou herself.

As Shoukou brought out some leftover food, they talked about the useless boyfriend and the likes until a point that Shoukou got so annoyed about his care for Karada that she ran off. As hiro gave chase, he caught Shoukou at the wishing stone. Then, we had the flashback of Shoukou and Hiro in happier times and telling her that he would be back soon. However, he never did as we knew from now. Shoukou then tried to hit Hiro but failed because she was too small. She said that she had not wished for anything and she had became the sacrifice for Karada who wanted to grow up.

Here, we had the side from Hiro that he never told Shoukou about it because he did not know he had a sister. Karada was not his blood sister but in fact, he had been adopted when he was 2. Hence, he never knew of his sister but the call in the funeral made him go back. He wanted to go back to USA after that, but the brave look of Karada made him stay there, which was why he considered Karada to be his sister right now. He still did not know it was Shoukou until Shoukou clearly showed she was who she was.

As Karada was cooking, Shoukou returned as she remarked to close the door. However, Hiro came in and Shoukou said that the girl cooking was his sister. What would happen?

——————————

Thoughts

The side of Hiro telling his story makes me more sympathetic to him. I fully expected the decision to be so. If i was Hiro, i would assume that I would be back, since it was just a funeral to go and get back soon enough. However, when you see the young and brave Karada, a sister that you never knew existed, it is cold blooded to leave her alone. Even though it is completely unfair to Shoukou in this case, I felt that Hiro did what he should.

It is just that a possible and fruitful relationship just disappears because of this. I do wish geninuely that there will be a happy ending for Shoukou and Hiro. I know Shoukou is bratty, selfish and conceited. I know Hiro is mellow, laid back and disturbing. However, I want Hiro to go back to the days when he looks so cheerful and content. For now, he is just living his life for Karada and it is wrong.

You do not live your life for anyone but yourself. I agree that Karada needs her support but to sacrifice your entire life simply for her is just wrong. She is a child, yes, but she is not helpless. The fact that she is brave and working hard for it should indicate that one day, you should just let her go. I think there is a time for everything and the time is now. Shoukou now is the venerable party more than Karada.

It might seem that Karada from the last three episodes is the most emotionally weak. However, I disagree with the obvious portrayal. I would say that both Hiro and Shoukou are the weak links. Both of them never dared to face the truth and avoided the past completely. To be able to brave that is courage and I think they are both escaping from life. They need to face it together and I think that is what the wishing stone wants. It is for them to start their life afresh and back to their normal selves.

Next episode seems to be a flashback of the first time that Karada and Hiro met in the funeral. Can’t wait for this great show to slowly unfold. Nice comedy elements, with nicely paced drama and slice-of-life chunks in all good pieces.

Excellent episode.

She’s cute. I think I have a dangerous CCS (Compulsive Cuteness Swooning, not cardcapter sakura) problem.

I profess myself not to be a pedo but the Shoukou in child mood can be so cute, simply because she is a cynical woman right down. Notice I avoid the word bitch because she is not that bad yet. In fact, she is generally the calmer one (even though it’s clear she is shaken) due to the fact that she’s a downright cynical person that has seen too much to hurt on this.

Asatte is probably starting to split people here, especially with some things in this episode that I feel might deter others from watching it. I will talk about my thoughts about this later as well.

Anyway, without any further ado, time for the episode summary.

Episode summary

The two stood together in shock, as they were surprised at the sudden transformation. Shoukou brought the shocked and crying Karada back to her house, where Karada bathe and slept in her place still in complete disbelief of what had happened. Hiro was busy trying to call everyone to see where Karada went and left the door open for her, just in case if she came back. It was apparant that he was in despair now, considering Karada had gone missing suddenly. Karada slowly cried herself to sleep, still wondering why she had suddenly turned into an adult, and Shoukou to a little girl. Shoukou simply lied down quietly, and her mind was definitely troubled as well.

The next day, Karada had not gone to school yet and the boy noticed as he went to Karada’s house. It was then that Hiro also reached home and he saw that the door was ajar. As he rushed in and shouted for Karada, he noticed it was just the boy. The boy, the boy’s sister and Hiro started to discuss where Karada could go. He had gone to all the places that she might have been, or could have been and even tried to contact everyone. He then noted that when he called Shoukou, it was a missed call and he rushed over to the wishing stone, since Karada had gone there very often.

The scene cut to Shoukou trying to ask if Karada wanted any food and the likes. It seemed that Karada was still in the state of shock, wondering why she had turned into a woman. They went out to the balcony as they looked over the view, which was why Shoukou chose this place. It calmed her. As Karada started to remember, she realized that it was probably because she wished with the wishing stone to be an adult, as she rushed out to the place.

She then mentioned that she did not want to be a burden to Hiro and wanted to grow up so that Hiro can get his freedom finally. Shoukou looked on sadly, as Hiro rushed over to the scene. However, he could not recognise as he rushed off. That left Karada crying as her own brother cannot even recognise her anymore.

Shoukou simply stood there quietly, mumbling that it was impossible for him to recognise them in this state.

—————————————

Thoughts

Well, as I was saying, Asatte’s pacing is really really slow. For many people, this will be a very strong deterrent because some people might consider this show to be utterly boring. I have to admit that there is little character development in this episode in a way, but the mood works for me, because of the idyllic feeling associated with this show.

In my opinion, I like this pace because it is portraying the emotions really well. Instead of making it an emo-fest (which it can jolly well do), it makes the irrealistic incident feel real. You really feel for Karada, who even after getting her wish, is totally lost on what she can do. A wish sometimes seem to be very simple, but when you actually get it, are you ready?

That is the question. I am sure that their wishes are truly wanted, but when they do come, you usually cannot handle it. Karada, no matter how hot or cute she is at this older age, is simply a child at heart. To accept such a dramatic change is supremely impossible for a middle school student. Shoukou’s viciousness has all but disappeared, and she seems to be a really reliable person. It is pretty amusing to see a grown up turning totally clueless and the kid being so knowledgable.

The next episode seems to centre on Shoukou, her previous relationship with Hiro as well as her wish to start afresh. What would face her next?

What happens when your wish comes true? What do you do, even if you do not expect it to happen?

Wishing upon a stone….

Asatte no Houkou is one out of the three highly anticipated series that Impzie is interested in. Gift ~Eternal rainbow~ was decent but not great. Kanon wowed me with the kyoto animation, even though the story did not really have any oomph for the first episode. The details in the show is always something that Kanon is good at, and it did not disappoint me in that aspect.

Just a note, I watched from .rmvb file and the fact that I used the Save thumbnails function from MPC meant that there is a timer. Unless I cannot find any .avi files, this usually will not happen. So yea, just a point of note.

Read on for more.

I do not know. To me, a straight forward funny harem/romance story might be good for some. However, to me, a romance series has to have depth, and show the weakness of the person (realistic) of course. The artwork is pretty simple but it fits the mood of this anime. There is this rather mood in the anime that brings me parallels with AIR. It is not the wispy sadness but the fact that everyone seems to have troubles with something. I do not know, i just have this feeling within.

The OP/ED is also very good, fitting the anime like a book.

The characters are fleshed out in blood and soul, with a lot of details about them in just the first episode. This clearly has many implications…Let me go through slightly with the characters.

—————————————————–

Characters

Shoukou: A young woman that suddenly came to the small town. It seems that she knows Hiro in the United states and they seperated four years ago, without any news from Hiro. They have broken up since then, but it is clear that she likes Hiro a lot. I am not sure on this next detail, but i do not know whether she wanted to escape from Hiro (which is why she came to this town) or she knows that Hiro is here, which is why she came. She seems to be angry with Karada for stealing Hiro away from her in USA.

Hiro: He seems to be rather silent in most of the show, but it is clear that he cares about Karada a lot. He used to be in the USA, but left Shoukou without a word 4 years ago as Karada is the only sister. He gave up everything and took care of her. I wonder if he is really taking care of her or Karada taking care of him though *smiles*. He is also very protective of Karada. It seems to me that they do not have parents at the very least, which is why he has to stay behind and take care of her.

Karada: A middle school girl who looks younger than her age. She is in fact a very capable girl that hates to rely on her brother for anything. She is very independent and knows how to cook well. She does not like to be treated as a child due to some things that have happened in the past. It seemed that she feels that she is a burden to Hiro, which is why she does not like to be treated as a child. She is insecure about her own abilities still and Shoukou preyed on it to hurt her badly.

——————————–

Episode summary

Note: For a comprehensive summary, go to Memento’s blog.

We see a small girl (Karada) praying and a woman (Shoukou) came over to tell her that it is a wishing stone. They started to make a wish together and it was then that Hiro arrived to the scene. The scene then changed to them getting ready to go to the beach. It was then that we see that other than Karada’s classmate (Tetsuya) and the sister, Shoukou was asked to tag along by Karada, since it seems that she knows Hiro. They moved along to the beach, where they invite Shoukou to play beach volleyball to engage everyone to play. After playing, they ate the meal prepared by Karada and it seemed that she made the egg roll salty because Hiro liked it.

As Tetsuya’s sister noticed that Shoukou had been eyeing Hiro, she assumed that Shoukou liked Hiro and was his ex girlfriend or something. However, Shoukou took offence at it, as Karada came over. Tetsuya’s sister assured Karada nothing was wrong and Shoukou told her that she was a child and would not understand. It was clear that Karada did not like it at all. Hiro explained later that after they lost their parents 4 years ago, Karada hated to be treated as a child as Hiro did everything to help her. Eventually, she made a comment on the board in their house not to treat her as a child.

Later on, they went to a shop and Hiro bought Karada a white ribbon accessory for her hair. It fits her well and Shoukou was jealous. She tried to move away but was seen by Karada. Karada, in total spite, said that it fitted her because it was for children. Tetsuya then tried to console Karada and did it well. As they returned to the train station, Hiro asked Karada to go on her own as he had something to talk to Shoukou.

We then realized that Hiro left Shoukou four years ago without a word because of Karada and never explained to Shoukou why he left. She had believed that he would be back but he did not fulfil it. He then asked her if she still loved him. Shoukou gave him a slap and said that he’s the worst of the worst.

Darkness permeated as the sign of something happening was soon. Shoukou was running and tripped because she could not see clearly. There, she met Karada who was at the same spot where they met. As the moon started to lit up the wishing stone, something happened and the two changed. Karada became an adult while Shoukou became a young kid. The spectacles fell and broke, symbolising the change.

————————————–

Thoughts

The first episode of Asatte no Houkou met every single expectation that I had of this series and much more as well. There is very strong character development in the first episode and we realize that there is much more with each character, with their own flaws. J.C Staff has its hands a possible GREAT winner of the Fall season by the rate it is going. Let us pray that we unfold this possibly good drama/romance series.

I am already falling in love with this, and as long as they do not add stupid cheesy moments to this series (Dont look like it with the mood it is building), I will be proud to say that 2 out of 3 noted series that I pick will be super hits. Kanon is an obvious one but this is something special. I am sure more people will pick this up soon. So if you have not, PLEASE DO. Shoukou, Hiro and Karada all seemed to be very complex characters, not unlike normal humans like us. That is why this story can touch people, because you can feel for them, even if they are sometimes bitchy, like how vindictive Shoukou became with Karada. Human hearts are frail.

The next episode seems to be Hiro realizing the change in the two gals.

Asatte no Houkou. Highly recommended.
