(Kicks Tyrandian Major General down a well…)

So yeah this post is a bit late mostly because I had midterms last week, but this time I got caught up in fairly short order. Episode 4 was not terribly interesting for me but episode 5 had me firing on all cylinders.

I like how the Tytanian grunts realize that Lira was harboring a fugitive and while the floor board thing was clichéd it was the third floor so I suppose the grunts could be forgiven if the underestimated the depth of dead space between the third and second floors. I sure as hell would have missed it given how most homes are constructed. In any case Tytanian forces aren’t stupid and quickly pointed out how cheap Lira looked in her economy clothes… I agree the conservation of textiles on her out fit was without a doubt an aggressive means to keep it within Lira’s price range. Oddly enough the high point of Episode 4 for me was watching Salisch getting pwned by his mum while he and Alses were having a fight. As the Duke who prides himself on martial prowess it was funny to see him so humbled by his mum, I don’t think Ajman is going to consider Brownie to be a worthy successor. Idris is more than delighted that Salisch has failed though the credit all belongs to Alses who is none too happy with being exiled.

Not to mention some more modest clothes…

Lira does look cheap, I’ll give you that much.

That’s Alses pet name for Fan, guess what is yours…

Fan Hulic’s attempts to cop a feel were not as fun, though the man is right the Casabianca Liberation Front is incapable of organizing a general revolt and even their “leader” Princess Miranda doesn’t want to see Casabianca restored 30 years after it was subsumed by Tytania. Seems Miranda does have a brain after all and is quite content with her lot in life even if she is no longer holding hegemony and fighting Tytania for her throne. Lira tries to use lurvin to keep Fan around, sadly granny did not like it too much and tipped off Tytania for 100,000 dakar and clemency for Lira. Oddly enough Tytania’s grunts honor their promise and try to haul off Fan. In one of the most tepid police chases ever (notable absence of an M-60) Fan is hounded relentlessly by Tytania. Miranda then takes Fan as war prize as she is an Amazon capable of crushing a man’s head with her bare hands, she also takes a corrupt cop along with her to her vessel. It seems that while Alses is sick and disturbed he at leas is capable of sparing people, as he did with the Captain of the honest Old Man seems the old timer was a vocal critic of Tytania and Alses decided to shut him up for good by smashing the man’s vocal chords. So Fan becomes a smuggler as Miranda had had no pretension of starting a rebellion.

Seems Alses is very good at getting under Salisch’s skin, which literally creeps out Brownie.

Mommy says its time to clean your room Salisch-chin…

Alses thinks Salisch-chin is a momma’s boy, serves him right for hogging Uraniborg.

In the end though Lira did not get her 100,000 dakar as it was part of Miranda’s plans. Back on the Tytania side of things Idris seems to have been in a sort of exile all this time as his posting was not entirely necessary as there was Ajman’s older brother Estrades to look after things. Estrades lost the power struggle and is looked down upon by Idris who seems ready and eager to go back to Uraniborg where all the cool shit happens. Estrade was probably incompetent and I must say I can see why he lost in the first place if he cannot even prevent the rise of an antagonistic Prime Minister. His son Bal’ami seems to be plotting something and given how he is about the right age as the other four dukes is probably none too happy that his dad is in political exile at the Crystal Palace babysitting the Emperor. Tyrandia’s Grand Duke recently dies and it falls upon the decidedly younger Grand Duchess Laetitia who is real chummy with Tytania’s Military Attaché Erwin Reiser who is half Tytanian. Tytania has some swagger if they can interrupt a funeral in such a manner.

Looking a bit jealous there Salisch…

Best break up line ever.

I know whose not been getting any as of late…

Despite Laetitia being very supportive of the Old Grand Duke’s policy of not antagonizing Tytania his underlings are eager to rebel. To this end Tytania smells trouble once Erwin stops sending in reports. Idris and Salisch jump to the hasty conclusion that the Laetitia is marshalling her forces for a rebellion, but Jouslain and Araibart make the correct assessment that she is militarily harmless. Fan Hulic agrees in that Laetitia the former commoner is going to be vulnerable to people who want to control her, seems Ariabart, Jouslain, and Fan have a better measure of the real Grand Duchess than Idris and Salisch who simply want to go in with guns blazing. Ajman sides with Red and Blue and sends Jouslain to investigate. Turns out Fan, Ariabart, and Jouslain were right that the Duchess was a victim of her own court who were eager to start a war with the tacit approval of the local Imperial Forces. Laetitia worships the Lord of Tytania as a living god and is resolute in her defiance of Tyrandia’s war faction. Despite the efforts to take Jouslain as a hostage Tyrandia fails but hopes to use Laetitia as a figurehead for a general revolt. Seems that the rebels were not so incompetent and Jouslain was unable to take all the chips. Tyrandia’s war faction wants a fight and if they cant have one then oblivion would be preferable for them.

That’s a fancy coffin ya got they Tyrandia.

No kids, no relatives, no other heir, but this rabid fangirl.

So Erwin you good with Panzers too or is that something only Rommels can do?

Erwin stays with the Duchess who upon seeing Jouslain safely off kills herself to deny the rebels legitimacy. Erwin dies shortly after taking up her gun. Jouslain departs with news that Tyrandia wants to have a fight, but wonders if Tytania is as great as Laetitia thinks it is.

Well despite the QUALITY animation episode 5 was pretty good overall. Laetitia looked kind of like Sheryl Nome given that they have similar haircuts, but at least the former had as much back bone as the latter. Given how the Grand Duke hand not other heirs it seems that his marriage to Laetitia was probably one of political necessity since her zeal might have counterbalanced the war faction. I have doubts that it was about love given that Laetitia was a Tytania fangirl and could only say thanks for the hard work once the Grand Duke died. Poor Erwin though he watched the love of his life marry some old guy and has to see her kill herself to deny the war faction legitimacy. I am sure Jouslain had hoped to take the Duchess and Erwin off, but since the war faction was spoiling for a fight arguing about it was pointless. Even if they were a tad fanatical at least in contrast with the war faction both Erwin and Laetitia had a better grasp of what Tyrandian policy should be. The war faction seems to think that Tytania is no longer a military power, and even if the myth of invincibility was shattered it doesn’t mean that Tytania still can’t put up one hell of a fight.

Viscount Loser is spying.

Well to be fair the only woman who could love you Brownie is your mom, and Alses has you beat there…

Even that Erwin fellow is more Tytania.

Right now it seems that Tytania is far more discreet that their reputation implies. Even if they have enemies in high places there seem to be those outside of Tytania that is willing to deal with them for the stability and peace that they have brought. I think the Tyrandian war faction is in over its head now that the Duchess is dead and they look like a bunch of rebels who killed their own lord. I like how Tytania is not even pulling the trigger given how they preferred to have dealt with it peacefully rather than go in with main cannons blazing. For now it seems that Idris was actually sent off by Ajman not only to test him but to also keep him away from the center of power as the Crystal Palace seems to be a post for failures like Estrades. Ariabart might not be the best there is since Jouslain seems to be the favorite in the line of succession. Still Red and Blue make a better combo as Jouslain is the savvy politician while Blue is a more reserved military commander than the hot headed Salisch. Hopefully Blue will not let his past mistake haunt him in his next battle, Fan Hulic fought using novel tactics and it seems that Tyrandia is going for a more conventional approach. It should be fun to see how it plays out. My money is still on Blue given how trigger happy the Tyrandians seems to be.

Should have kissed her Erwin…

Still playing in the dirt, hell I bet this girl can dig a slit trench in 30 seconds…

Wow Laetitia is sharp not only might it work she gets to see both of them nakkid. Jouslain didn’t fall for it though.

If nothing else one has to appreciate how Tytania is not the aggressor here and it was the Tyrandian war faction that took up the mantle of aggressor since even up to the end Jouslain was willing to deal. How very canny of Tytania to make it coup rather than a popular rebellion. Jouslain had good reason to be disappointed in the Tyrandian war faction, as war is the continuation of policy through other means, a continuation in the sense that it comes after failure of all other methods of policy. Given how Jouslain was able to read the situation better than his peers it seems that Ajman is favoring him for good reasons. Red isn’t weak but rather he is more partial to using war as a last resort rather than the first. As for the rest of Tytania it seems Alses is plotting to make a political come back, while Bal’ami is probably plotting to make trouble. How tragic that a loser like Bal’ami gets to keep the name of Tytania while Erwin gets left in the lurch. Ah well it seems that only a select few can carry the name of Tytania.

What purpose Lydia serves is still a mystery, but I guess we will not be able to find out anytime soon.

Some Hero, eh?

After escaping from Euria Fan Hulic arrives at Emmental where he is soon accosted by a Lira Florenz She tries to make off with his wallet, but gets caught, she then takes Fan to an employment office where the local Tytania security forces catch him and bring him before the younger Duke of Brown Alses Tytania. Alses cuts Fan a deal which he reluctantly accepts, but the local resistance guys make off with him instead. Now on the Run Fan finds himself with the remnants of the Principality of Casabianca. While Fan plays fugitive Idris becomes head of the Imperial Guard and purges the followers of the late Prime Minister.

Wow she even enjoys playing in the dirt, still what exactly is her contribution going to be though?

I wonder if any one is ever going to try and cosplay a Lira…

Well it was not a very action packed episode but we were given a better picture of how Tytani operates and what kind of person Fan Hulic really is. Fan is no Yan Wenli given his lackadaisical attitude and preference for self preservation. I am pretty sure he meant to take the job he was offered, but it seems that he is a victim of his own success as every rebel group is eager to make use of the hero who defeated Tytania. Unlike most other series there is no clear cut good and evil and even Fan Hulic admits this when he makes a few cutting remarks about the Casabianca Liberation Front. Tytania has brought peace to a lot of people and even alliances with Tytania do not seem terribly oppressive, somewhat like the Empire from LOGH, only in this case it is more of a meritocracy than autocracy. Fan may be lazy but at least he shows a deeper understanding of politics than Lira, liberation is going to be harder than she thinks given how lots of people have benefited from Tytanian power and that even if Tytania is gone eventually something will takes its place. Right now it doesn’t seem as if Lira had even thought about how Tytania could be taken down; it’s not just about a military victory, but she would have to take on the sizable population of Tytania’s supporters too. I like how the rebellion was already subverted as a pipe dream and cast as the foolish venture that it was. All too often the romance of rebelling against something gets played up to the point that it cannot be villified, here the picture is just that gray since Casabianca did not inspire enough loyalty or fervor to be a larger movement, and Tytania is not the evil empire but rather a typical state where carrots and sticks are used to maintain order. Idris is too much of a stick guy, but it seems that Jouslain and Ariabart might be in favor of carrots.

Well this is shaping up to be a modern production.

Fan Hulic spits on your idealism. Pay attention Celestial Being, this is why you lost the first time you dip shits.

While Idris is doing some things that would make Oberstein proud none of the other Dukes seem enthusiastic about purging the Imperial guard so overtly. Ariabart and Jouslain seem to be getting along well, but Salisch is raging all by himself at this juncture. Alses seems to have is own issues with his brother Salisch. Right now I don’t think Salisich is even aware of Alses’ seething indignation at being shut off from the capital and exiled to the frontier. As schemers go I think Salisch is but brute force while Alses is a bit more surreptitious, and undoubtedly Alses is keen on disposing of his idiot brother who keeps him in exile. Alses is not a savory person but at least we know his forces are efficient, perhaps even letting Fan go was part of his plan. At any rate Tytanian mooks are not pushovers and can shoot straight as they killed the boy and made slaughter of the Casabianca Liberation Front. Even if Alses sexual preferences are plain, given his flamboyant style that emulate Alto-hime in terms of girlishly good looks I can see why Salisch would keep his younger brother away from Uraniborg, still even if Alses is a deviant he is still talented it’s rather unfair for Salisch to try and take the credit from Alses. At any rate it seems that even within the five families rivalries are still just as sharp though Salisch seems rather ignorant of the subtleties of running Tytania. Idris is just content with making the Emperor his bitch and no doubt with Idris stalking the halls of the Imperial Palace that things will get a lot more dangerous for the other nobles.

Well…

You could use a pony-tail…

Idris is just being casually brutal with his purge, Jouslain and Ariabart think that there will be more trouble ahead because of what Idris is doing, but Ajman seems eager to use Idris to stir up some challenges as he believes that idleness breeds weakness. At least for now we are moving away from LOGH territory and it seems as if Fan Hulic will only be a persistent issue between the Tytanian dukes. I am less inclined to believe that there will be a significant challenge to Tytanian military power for a while given how small these disparate rebel groups appear. Emmental and Euria don’t seem to have much of a problem with becoming allied with Tytania though it seems any alliance with them is going to be inherently unbalanced. Even if Emmental is a democracy I guess that a practical alliance is better than trying to resist vainly, even if they are a protectorate so long as dues to Tytania is paid they can go about their business. Hulic was more of a Tytanian issue and it seems the local authorities don’t particularly hold any illusion that Fan Hulic is going to help them get out of their relationship with Tytania, this is in start contrast with El Facil in LOGH which relied on Yang’s reputation to ensure their freedom. Perhaps the pursuit of Fan is going to be a running plot thread given how politics and not space battles seem to be taking center stage at the moment. Maybe for now it will be rather Clausewitzian in that war will be the continuation of politics through other means. Not sure how Lydia is going to figure into this, but right now Lira seems to be Fan’s female companion for the series, at least unlike LOGH it is for now making room for women to take part and even the trap Alses is brought in to make this less like LOGH.

Oh if only Euria treated its heroes this way…

While there was much more talking in this episode I am willing to tolerate the slower pace since they seem to be laying down some ground work for future conflicts. It turns out that Fan Hulic’s victory was unexpected as Euria had put Fan Hulic in command to be the face of their defeat. While Tytania and Euria has not worked out a deal prior to it seems that the current regime on Euria had only assented to battle as a means to save face. They were not going to win, but at the same time surrendering without having fired a shot would have been politically unthinkable. Even amongst the four dukes it seems that competition between them is about to heat up big time now that it seems that Ariabart slipped up, right now it seems of the four that Juslan seems to be the favored candidate, mostly because he doesn’t fall on any given extreme.

Elan will do for you what it did for the French and the Japanese, I hope you enjoy parading your men as mountains of corpses, Brownie.

So Fan Hulic victorious does not get a heroes welcome as the draftee admiral from the Merchant Marine was meant to be the public face of a Eurian defeat. They cut him a check but he flees into exile, seems the bubble gum genius has as many problems holding stable employment as he has with womenfolk. While he lacks employment now there are probably other interests groups that would be keen on employing him in order to bring down Tytania. Conversely now that he is famous he will also be hunted down by Tytania who are willing to give him a job, and it is quite clear that they intend to make Fan Hulic an offer he can’t refuse. While right now only Ariabart has problems with trying to hire Fan Hulic the rest of the Tytania clan are willing to bring another talented commander into their fleet. Pride matters little when the chance to enhance Tytanian military power presents itself. I have to say it’s a more sound policy militarily and politically, given how it would send a message to every ambitious commander that Tytania is willing to offer quarter and employment to the talented without holding a grudge. Militarily it makes those good commanders more willing to surrender at the first sign of trouble and it saves military resources that would have otherwise been spent annihilating such talent.

But I want to see…

Ajman seems to view this Fan Hulic issue as a way to test the four dukes to see which of them has their head on straight. While their after action was largely correct in dissecting what Ariabart did right, Idris and Zalisch both drew the incorrect (IMHO) conclusion as to why Ariabart lost. Zalisch harps on the mysterious unknown quantity that is spirit saying that Ariabart should have essentially punched his way through the Eurians, while Idris preaches that it was Ariabart’s arrogance that lost him the battle. I think that it was mostly due to surprise and a massive intelligence failure than anything else, the lack of spirit probably staved off an earlier defeat while arrogance seems to have only aggravated the problem once Ariabart ignored the first suspicious sign of the ponderous movements of the Eurian Fleet. That said it seems that the Tytanian fleet was not completely lost since the last remnant of Fan Hulic’s was only 600 ships while Tytania out numbered him heavily from the start. Unless the subs or wonky it seems that while 600 ships was a significant loss it was not the whole fleet that Ariabart took with him, but that one blow by the Whigerd Canons was sufficient to force a Tytanian withdrawal. In light of that having lost tactical control it was better to disengage rather than stick around while trying to reform what was left.

Defeat is the best tonic against complacency.

Right now it seems that Zalisch is more prone to relying solely on military power to rule whereas Idris operates under the assumption that subtler methods like media manipulation and secret police can be relied upon as the primary means of Tytanian control. While bother have merit the happier middle ground that Juslan seems to occupy is favored by Ajman. Ariabart right now, seems to crumble under pressure and defeat and thus seems to have blundered badly in the race to succeed Ajman. I am not sure exactly what to make of Juslan, right now he seems observant but he is also cognizant of the fact that he does not have all the answers, and his admission that he probably could not have done better against Fan Hulic seems to confirm this. Ajman might be publicly allowing the four dukes to handle it but I don’t think he is going to stop keeping tabs on Fan Hulic, given how coffee is the working drink of this series Ajman is going to be spending much more time to resolve the Fan Hulic threat. Juslan prophecies that he will be called upon to lead Tytania, but at the same time it will have signaled a significant shift given how it seems that Juslan believes in little niceties like giving quarter. I don’t think that we can write off Ariabart off just yet since even in defeat as long has he can draw the correct conclusions from that defeat then he will be better off for it.

Looks like the hero of Eurai will have to take what he can get…

One of the more annoying things this time was shoe polish girl whose presence was an annoyance from beginning to end. Judging by the preview it seems that women might have more of a role to play seeing how Juslan has Francia and hopefully Fan Hulic will meet a lady friend instead of some fabulous dude. Guess Lydia will have more company after all on the female bench. In light of the Eurian capitulation I don’t think that there will be any bastions of good government for us to see, not even Tytania is doing anything wholly terrible given how the current policy is based on carrot and stick, and they seem less prone to go to war if a favorable arrangement can be worked out. Certainly right now Euia seems to be run by political hacks, while the Empire is run by an incompetent aristocracy. Tytania is an amoral regime to be sure but even with the purges it was not all that different from Euria sacrificing its fighting men to save face, on the contrary it seems a bit more honest.

Hello are you by chance his Adjutant?

Because even a plea of innocence is guilty of wasting his time.

So Tytania is finally subbed and it seems it was worth the wait. While there are some passing similarities to LOGH, I think that it was different enough in some respects. While the females will be horrifically out numbered by the guys I don’t think were going to have as large as cast as LOGH given how I doubt it will be 110 episodes long, so I highly doubt they will give us 30 plus Admirals. That said I still have no idea how long this is going to run for but hopefully it will be enough to get through the novels that have been published so far. That being said there was some QUALITY animation with the distance shots, and it’s a very niche kind of series that will lack the mass appeal to grab that godly budget, but nevertheless I like the tactical aspect and perhaps a bit of the strategic aspect that they have shown so far. So if you are the kind of War College junkie/aspirant like me Tytania is well worth looking into. Combat is much slower with ships only having a forward arc and engagements taking place over hundreds of kilometers.

They see us rollin they hatin, partollin and tryin to catch us ridin dirty (The Nobles observe Tytania strolling. They feel intense envy on account of our great success in life, and so, they keep watch of their actions in order to apprehend them for shooting the minister.)

The Tytania are the most prestigious family within the Verdhana Empire after their defection from and subsequent conquest of the old Federation. Such is there power they can roll up to Emperor Harsha VI’s birthday party and shoot his prime minister under the pretext that the old coot was a traitor. The guards look about nervously while the nobles and the Emperor tremble and cower in fear. Clearly these Tytania Lords mean business and seem bent on keeping the Emperor as little more than a figurehead as they try and secure their Pax Tytania. Nevertheless the bush war against Euria has produced one significant challenge to Tytania’s supremacy, the laid back and hither to unknown Admiral Fan Hulic.

Right now of the Tytania Dukes it seems that Red or Juslan seems to be the front runner in becoming the successor to Ajman as he is the most observant of the bunch and seems to gather much more of what Ajuman has to say. Green or Idris seems the ost cocky of the bunch and Brown or Zalisch seems to be the kind of guy who prefers brutal and crude methods to getting things done. Ajman or White is by far the wiser and seems to have a finer grasp over how to use intimidation to beat down his foes at court. These guys appear to mean business and have flair of calculated and reasoned brutality to them which makes them all the more dangerous. Still it seems poor Ariabart or Blue will have his mettle tested first.

Despite the seeming defeat of Ariabart at the hands of Fan Hulic, I do not think that it was as clear cut a victory as some people would think. It was well and good that Fan Hulic obliterated one fleet but Tytania probably has more and much of the Eurian Fleet was also lost in luring them within range of the Whigerd Cannons, more over those Whigerd Cannons were single shot weapons that probably took resources to build. Fan Hulic escaped with a fleet of destroyers but that trick probably won’t work again and the loss in major capital ships will be hard to replace if not impossible altogether if Tytania attacks in force. Still Ariabart did prove himself a competent commander by not calling Fan Hulic’s bluff and he did try and do the correct thing in using maneuver to cut off any escape route and try in order to annihilate the opposition in one go. A quick finish would have been preferable to having the Eurian’s escape with any portion of their fleet which could have easily scattered if their defeat was not total. If the Eurian’s scattered their fleet they could remained a threat to any supply lines as commerce raiding requires fewer resources than commerce protection. Even having a Fleet in being at some strategically strong defensive position could have diverted a higher portion of Tytanian military might, as in the case of the German Fleet in both World Wars. As mighty as the Tytania Navy is it would not have been prudent of them to be locked in a drawn out game of cat and mouse in the depths of space.

Ariabart did not do anything wrong by fighting conservatively given how he did not take any unnecessary risks and he was fighting against an unknown quantity. Given how conventional wisdom had declared that Whigred Cannons were useless in a fleet engagement, he could not have predicted their use by Fan Hulic. The only thing I think he could have done better was to spread out while intensifying power instead of turning tail. His fleet would have been mauled but at least more ships would have survived. If volume of fire had been maintained not all of those cannons would have been able to fire. The Eurians know that they do not stand a chance if they fight conventionally because even with Fan Hulic if Tytania attacks every where then Euria will be weak somewhere and Fan Hulic can’t be everywhere at once. Unless they get allies quick they cannot fight conventionally so scattering their fleet and making any occupation costly would probably be the best way to get around Tytania’s superiority in the long run.

Maybe some of you guys would have done something different to beat Fan Hulic? If so feel free to share since I think there are other ways to approach the dilemma, if not approach the battle differently altogether. I just love how Clausewitzian Fog and Friction gave Araibart a good kicking that was on par with the one Fan Hulic gave him.

Fan Hulic won round one but it remains to be seen if he can get the jump on Ajman or any of the other Tytanian Admirals. Now that he is a known quantity Fan Hulic will have many tougher battles to fight. I am not sure if Euria is going to be in the fight much longer if the full weight of Tytania is brought to bear since I doubt even Fan Hulic can beat all five of Tytania’s great admirals at once. Not sure how Lydia is going to contribute to the series, but sure maybe the thing that tears Tytania asunder is rivalry over a woman. Over all it was a good episode if a bit wonky in the animation department. I can’t wait to see what happens next. I like the old school feel of the ship designs even if they fight just like the ships from LOGH it al least forces the adept use of manuever over just brute force or for now hax. The aesthetic is alright even if it looks like rich bastards in space for the Tytania side. Wonder if Lydia will end up with a host club of Tytanian dukes…
