Urin is REALLY loli…

After Urin makes a dark pact with Sedna Marin becomes distraught and starts blaming Kanon for what happened as it was that accursed ring that served as the link. They part ways as Warin explains to Kanon how Marin and Urin were non-blood related siblings and how Sea People have different concepts of family. Marin starts thinking about the good old days when Marin and Warin were loli and Urin was super loli. Maddened with regret Marin effects an ill advised rescue attempt only needing rescue herself which Warin kindly granted. In the end Marin admits that she doesn’t hate Kanon and that she needs her help.

Back on the surface Kanon and Oshima have an argument where it comes out that Kojima wasn’t really cheating and only hanging out with Oshima “because she asked him to.” Oshima starts crying because of her unrequited love which makes Kanon cry True Tears. Oshima wants no pity (she deserves none anyway) and gets Kanon wet after Zeus smacked a wave at Oshima for being mean and jealous. Miyako gets mad at Kanon for ruining the pickles but in the end it is good times once Marin comes back to Kanon’s house.

Kanon will also be an eternal existence in your memory…

In an effort to calm their hearts Kanon takes Marin to Suzuki to learn yoga, much fun was had as Suzuki was going on about how Marin is special to Kanon and how Kanon really likes Marin. Suzuki then tells the Ballad of Loli-Kanon and how they used to pay as lolis. It was very cute with the mud made Palantir. Kanon and Marin have to o er hear Oshima say mean things but they part ways for a while. Marin finally meets with the Flounder Kojima. He tells of how Kanon was a no nonsense otome who was very tsun tsun a d how he confessed to her in the library. Kanon realizes that she has to confront Kojima directly (I would prefer to believe that she will dump him, but I get the feeling that won’t be the case) and she comes to grips with her fondness for Marin.

Upon meeting Kojima and Marin Urin sends two age ts to kill Kojima and steall Kanon’s kiss. Only this time women are sent instead of lolis and they use their ahoges with deadly effect…

On the one hand I understand Kanon about not wanting to part but Marin lives right next door and Suzuki is going to stalk her for the rest of her life so if they do part it will not be for a long while. I really liked how Oshima made funny faces becuase they suit her ugly personality. I hope Kanon and Marin stay FRIENDLY forever even if Kanon becomes bi. I guess with this we shall see more yandere Urin as she tries the Liang Qi method of getting her Marin onee-sama’s attention. While it is unfortunate that not too many people care the Yuri undercurrent is as delicious as ever and I did get a few laughs out of Oshima as she got all uppity.  If nothing else Marin giving Kanon yuri hugs never seems to get old for me.

After the lull in subs I have had a bit of trouble trying to get back into Umi Monogatari. I guess at this point that the first ep proved a lot more damaging to potential viewership but it is still chugging along with delicious yuri and some decent combat here and there. So it seems that Urin has fallen to the dark side as her yuri love for Marin seems to be at a dead end. I like how it was Marin that feared the darkness and eventually succumbed during the eclipse, given how Kanon was already evil she was impervious to suggestion. As Urin already proved vulnerable it made sense that Marin would not be immune to Sedna’s Jedi mind tricks. Since light was at its weakest during the eclipse and it was total darkness Marin’s powers seem to be solar powered and can work at night as the moon shines because of the sun.
I liked how close Marin and Kanon were getting prior to Urin betraying them so she could be powerful. Yuri lunches, Marin swearing that she will protect the feeling of love in Kanon-chan. Since no one seems to be watching this show I suppose that the beating of Sam will go on unsung. The guy tries to make a pass at Kanon and gets kicked in the face for his arrogance. Even Sedna’s minions thought little of him and beat the crap out of him for hitting on her. It also seems that Marin is very popular back home as Warin seems to have yuri love for her too. Fortunately despite ample amounts of yuri love it seems the sea people come from giant oysters and not hetero relationship is required. However this means that the population size will remain very small…

On the one hand I do sympathize with Marin over her loss of Urin but Kanon is pretty much blameless as they were the ones who insisted that Kanon keep that cursed ring. Even if Kanon and her Mom were very much “To Get Rich is Glorious” it wasn’t that evil. Still one has to appreciate their little scheme of selling random objects and passing them off as love charms. I think Kanon has come a long way in becoming a better person as Suzuki is calling her first to brag about being on TV, and she did help Marin get through the eclipse with out complaining. Sadly Kojima seems to keep calling Kanon-chan in a bid to steal her from Marin. Such a lousy little miscreant that Kojima is. I really liked how because they LISTENED TO HER SONG that they were both able to transform again. However as this was never written down it seems Matsumoto is starting to get way off the mark when it comes to history. I have to say though the butterflies of evil were rather nicely done and it was mildly amusing to see that Kanon and her mom came up with the same idea on profiting from the strange event.

Not sure how I feel about the new turtle Ichikawa, certainly I think she looked better when she was one with the darkness, but at least she only limits herself to inane babble and won’t be complaining anytime soon. Still if evil makes makes everything look more womanly I wonder what Urin will look like after she emerges from her cocoon. Even if this isn’t the funniest show out there I did get a good laugh or two at Kanon when she was trying out rings only to remember that her family has been abusing their magical heirloom to make pickles. While Kanon admittedly looks pretty good in her school swimsuit I still think that Kojima is up to no good as he stares at her with foul thoughts while on his dayto with Ooshima. I suppose that since Marin seems to be in her rut for the long haul over Urin that it will be a while before she starts hugging Kanon-chan again, which makes me somewhat dislike Urin. Ah well next time it looks like we get to see super loli Urin and Marin.

While it seems that Umi Monogatari has been consigned to the dust bin by many I still find the yurilicious subtext to be very enjoyable. Even if it is slow, it does lend itself wonderfully as an alternate universe of Canaan where Canaan (born here as Kanon) was born to a boring life on a beautiful beach. One need look no further than that odd glove Kanon wears in her regular clothes to see that she shares the same fashion sense as her alternate universe self. I am sure if we gave Urin an airsoft pistol and a knife she would be the spitting image of Liang Qi, but I digress. This time it was all about Kanon’s childhood as the best grunt of her generation, and she certainly was adorable in her loli years with twin tails. Even if her dolt of an ex-boyfriend was useless, Suzuki seems to like her a lot and see past her dark aura. Marin really loves her and always makes a point to hug and reassure Kanon and her self esteem issues. The battle itself was lovely for one reason and one reason only…Kanon stepped up and carried off Marin for a change. Aoi Hana – 01: Kawamori Strikes Back

It certainly seems to be much more slice of life than other yuri series I have seen and as such there doesn’t seem to be a tall dark and bishojo to act as the Chikane-class alpha female. Instead in an interesting reversal the super tall Fumi Manjome-san is the cry baby with the washboard. In contrast her designated life partner Akira “Achan” Okudaira seems to be the brave one. Incidentally it seems that Aoi Hana seems to have it in for dudes with sis-con as Shinobu is a butt monkey who likes his imouto a little too much. I suppose that Zyl will have a field day drawing comparisons between Shinobu and Stripey as is the way of Red Zakus. Both may go to different schools but it seems that both go to all girl schools. Achan’s school seems to also have an attached loli-school whose students are simply criminally cute. Even if Fumi is no Katie, she still gets three admirers off the bat who assume that she is Chikane-class and hope to get her into their drama club so they can yuri tea parties. A-chan gets no yuri harem or fan club, but it seems that Kyoko Ikumi has locked S-Foils in attack position and is ready to make a milk run on Achan. I wonder if Kyoko is going to aspire to become Chikane-class because that would be fucking sweet. To be sure there probably were other embarrassing incidents for Fumi, but why they chose her wetting herself is beyond me…In any case Fumi’s cousin and long time yuri pal Chizu gets a pineapple cakey and is sent off to marry some dude. Fumi is understandably distraught that it was time for Chizu to marry and pretend to be heterosexual.

All in all I will watch because it is yuri, and that cakey thing was like a FALCON PUNCH to the gut.

I suppose the moral of this story is that the Right to Bear Arms is a fundamental right. Simply put, what kind of self respecting person would pass up an arsenal made by Kabuto? Ankokuji is still loyal to the memory of his beloved Gamia, and who could blame him as Shiro turns to the loli path and suspects everyone but his mother of being a loli-con. While Baron Ashura was a huge butt monkey it seems that against Mazinger Z even Count Blocken becomes one too, though at least he did manage to blow up the Jet Scrander. Still Mario N7 was not long for the world as his Marionettes were no match for Ankokuji’s new arsenal. Unlike other mecha series guns are used liberally here as any mecha pilot ought to be able to fight competently outside of the cockpit like the Great Prince Ali. Ah how I miss the old days before this faux righteousness fad of more talking and less shooting took hold. So old man Stronheim seems to have a thing for Tsubasa, who is now revealed to be Kouji and Shiro’s mom, ah well I suppose coming back from the dead is as good a declaration of love as any. Still the poor man waited all his life only to find that his one and only already had two kids…ouch.

Sora no Manimani – 01: Astrology in my Astronomy?!

I did not know the Wii could make something like this…

Well not really but while the first ep was well animated, pretty, and filled with bright colors; it seems to be a bit lacking on the comedy side. Moreover I think as time goes one people will find Mii-chan to be irritating, she reminds me of Tenma of School Rumble though it seems there will be little need to reset the relationships given the male to female ratio. It’s pretty clear that Saku-chan is doomed to be the bride of Mii-chan so hopefully this will be more romantic comedy than hateful harem. I hope the comedy picks up because otherwise it will probably get old quick. The episode itself was alright it had its moments though I think Saku-chan should have imagined his nemesis Mii-chan as a fat yaoi fan girl with a paddle, but a missed opportunity I suppose. At the very least it seems to have no panty shots though they probably should go more over the top. Still I suppose as long as the animation is crisp there is still hope for this. The manga is ongoing so there is some people out there who like it. If it’s going to stay more on the romantic side that’s fine though I was hoping that I would have busted a gut laughing.

Still Fumin  is superior, that is all.

Umi Monogatari – 02: Kanon’s Ultimate Techinique…

For a first mahou shojo battle it wasn’t too bad as there were fewer speed lines than anticipated and the sequence where Marin was dodging and taking pot shots was mildly Macrossian. If only Kanon called her attacks and said attack was SEKIHA TENKYOKEN, ah well I suppose this isn’t slated to be a series where Marin and Kanaon’s blood will be BURNING RED. Not much happened in terms of story but it seems that Kanon is getting some guests to her home next week. I wonder how young Kanon’s mom was if Kanon is not hitting 18 years of age, but is suppose anime being anime that it’s only a minor detail. It’s kind of funny how the turtle was mocking Kanon for not being chaste when it was Marin who actually wore something even skimpier. Still I suppose the highlight for me was predictably when Marin confessed her yuri love for Kanon who should join the yuri side after her dip shit boyfriend reneged on his promise. Not that it was the only yuri moment, it seems that the servants of Sedna take the guise of women and have a penchant for wrapping around Kanon and go all out in trying to take her first kissu. In the end I probably won’t be dropping this until 7 eps later if it starts dragging. Nevertheless I enjoyed this one much more than the first.

As a sailor I cannot help but listen to sea stories, and given that this sea story is by a big shot director I will give it a chance even if the habits of Marin and Urin are strange. So yeah they are woefully under dressed and certainly being in the frigid ocean they might want to dress a bit more warmly, though I suppose that this was unavoidable given that the origins were pachinko machines. At least the rest of the sky dwellers took notice about the strange water people. Though as it was a beach is suppose that it wasn’t too far out of the realm of possibility, certainly Marin looks enough like a gaijin so that the locals wouldn’t give her crap to her face at least as they prefer to snivel behind people’s backs, Given the OP I doubt that Marin and Urin will start dressing in a more modest fashion, though certainly if they were to do a better infiltration they will have to alter their dress code. Still I can overlook such quirks of their water people society as after all every culture has their disagreeable aspects and at least under dressing is as mild as you can get.

So Marin is a local hero who wants to help people, and is easily distracted by shiny objects. She also has the habit of bending over instead of going prone, but at least her heart is in the right place. It seems that for Marin and Urin there is great attachment to beautiful things and how they are a reflection of righteousness instead of vanity. Still I was amused that all this fuss was over ONE RING that could not be destroyed by any means that Kanon possessed, I hope that they will either resort to dragonfire or the fires of Mount Doom to destroy it. I suppose that Marin’s seeming lack of intelligence can be attributed solely to her utter ignorance of the malicious ways of the sky-dwellers, so it can be excused for now…at least until Kanon figures out that Marin must be educated. I suppose happy go lucky Marin will complement the down and out Kanon. Speaking of Kanon while Marin is getting all the glances (to be fair Marin certainly is ugly) Kanon is certainly my favorite. The poor girl gets dumped at noon and scant hours later her dipshit former boyfriend is out with another girl enjoying the sights. I hope eventually Kanon levels up to Mogami Kyoko-class so that she can send forth her hate to strangle her tormentor. Still she does have that dark mode going for her and on occasion she does have some G Gundam mannerisms.

I did like the judicious use of SD where appropriate so it kept the magical girl feel and provided respite from Marin and Urin’s choice of dress. As much as I think Urin has her moments just looking at her makes me feel kind of dirty. I guess that even if every one is sporting expose midsection that a couple inches of cloth kind of make a difference. I did like Kanon’s mom though I have my doubts that she should be looking twenty and fitting into her daughter’s high school uniform, not that it is a bad thing of course… The last thing worth mentioning is the darkness which I have no clue what it is though I suppose that in good time we will see more of the story. So far for a first ep it wasn’t too bad as we met the principal characters of importance, Kanon, Marin, Urin, and Kanon’s mom. Kanon’s-ex and his new bimbo can rot in hell for all I care, undoubtedly that rather short period between break-up and new bitch probably indicates that he was a cheating son of a bitch. I am very quick to anger and even quicker to judge so I will be bashing the louse with vigor. But really fuck him.

The ED was adorable and certainly letting Urin watch the unedited version of the Little Mermaid was going to cause trouble. Still the parallel is clear beware of the land of the sky-dwellers, also the Little Mermaid was a dumb bimbo and it’s best to not do what she did, namely she should have stabbed that faithless dog that passed for a prince.

After watching Umi no Monogatari, I have a sense of ambivalence about the show. It’s not that there is something fundamentally wrong or unwatchable from the show. I mean, the girls are pretty, the animation is good and there is enough fanservice to fulfil those fans who enjoy cute little things in cute little swimsuits. The show had good production values and some major cash pumped in albeit the current economic downturn. It ended on a decent climax, and we still do not have any idea where it is going. Also, the director as repeated by Crusader a few times in private, is a big shot director that has done the likes of Kanon and Aria. Surely, nothing wrong can come out of this, right?

The story goes about with a typical ditsy sea maiden. She decided to bring a beautiful ring to the “Air land” because she wanted to return it to the beautiful person who threw it off to the sea. The story in the first episode evolves around her search for the girl and an introduction of the other cast, such as her younger grumbling loli sister. The episode ended with her loli sister unsealing a malicious soul from the tomb.

After watching the show, there is something wrong. More accurately, something is missing. Now, I am sitting down thinking: Why does the show bore me, even when the evil spirit came out? Why am I not feeling anything for these characters, like I felt for the characters in Kure-nai since the very first episode? The question goes down to the unmemorable characters. None of them interests me. Their character dynamics seems commonplace and mundane. Don’t get me wrong. Mundane can be a good tool to use in a slice of life series, or when the characters are the centrepiece of the series. This just does not strike me as a character-centric show.
Perhaps the character and series will develop fast enough and become an excellent show, but I always feel that a show on its debut should have memorable and interesting characters that will pull you in. If it is not the plot that intrigues, the characters must do that before you lose interest. Both the sea maiden leads, namely Marin and Urin, just do not ooze any unique traits or qualities that are apparent immediately.

In anime, anything is possible. Hence, demanding superficial viewers like me wants something special. It’s either you make such an extraordinary ordinary character or a really weird main lead that captures your attention (for good or for bad). When it is a half-baked character like Marin, you just find it hard to find any interest. Compared to Umi No Monogatari, Aria’s characters are refreshingly quirky, especially with Athena and Alice in the mix. It’s probably a premature prediction, but I believe that the characters are going to be dividing interest. Some will consider them to be the best ever (cute innocent girls in swimsuits, count me in!) while others might bemoan their wafer-thin depth. Prove me wrong, Umi no Monogatari.

In all, Umi no Monogatari had all the right ingredients to do well in the future. Considering how the director is amazing in his many works, it can be good. However, nothing has been striking “Must watch about the show, and I have no reason to keep watching it. Maybe, if I get to see a green haired loli swimming around in that cute swimsuit… Or not.
