WTF? Indeed…

Yeah I know this is pretty damn late in the game but duty calls and I am still trying to make up for all that lost time. Well the final episode of Kampfer was an unrelated extra episode, but it was nonetheless enjoyable as role switching revealed how Hara-kiri Taiga had been coming up with a wardrobe change for Natsuru Girl-type, glad to see that it did not all go to waste. I don’t have much else to say about since it was pretty over the top visually and it had its moments. The only thing that really stuck out was Natsuru’s selfcest and the continued AWESOMENESS of Capitalism from the class president, VP, and accountant. It was pretty stupid but I laughed here and there.

Final Thoughts:

Overall it wasn’t much more than a yuri fanservice show, and on that level it succeeds quite nicely, but quite why and how expectations actually rose is beyond me. If one wants some sort of story and plot then they will be rudely disappointed as I was with Ranka when she had her defining moment of EPIC FAIL. Otherwise so long as expectations are low Kampfer won’t disappoint too badly, though Kampfer Akane helps out a lot. As much flak as Natsuru Boy-type gets his loyalty would have been admirable had it pointed in a reasonably good direction (Akane or Shizuku) but it was directed at Sakura who didn’t get AWESOME until she revealed herself as the BIG BAD and mistress of a yuri harem. Just goes to show that even with his almost Patrick Colassour level of loyalty he ended up coming off as an idiot and a moron by virtue of him being horribly misguided. The unashamed shout outs and references were fairly funny if only to make the viewer realize that the Kampfer Team was watching the same shit they were watching. I have to give them bonus points for being UC oldfags and possibly some of the elite few that survived Macross 7. I certainly hope the cast had fun with this since I quite enjoyed how Akane went from meek megane girl to gun wielding Yandere with salt water in her veins. Unfortunately I don’t think we’ll be hearing that much swearing from the cast anytime soon, which is a shame as it was music to my ears, not mention gloriously different from the roles they usually do. There were a couple good eye-catches, the Hatsune Miku cosplay comes to mind, and for an 11 ep series it didn’t over stay it’s welcome too badly for those of us who maintained low expectations. Maybe things will change in the event there is a second season. As to that I am willing to give it a chance since Dark Sakura with her White Kampfer Yuri Harem is much more fun that the bubbly ditz she was for most of series run. As a comedy it managed fairly well though it was far from the best this year, it was pretty average in my opinion it had its moments but whether or not one even gets to them is dependent on how high a tolerance one can have for Natsuru Boy-type. I’ll leave it to others who read the source material to crucify this adaptation as a travesty. However I think it was just one of those instances where not reading the source material made it more easily enjoyable.

Final Grade: B- (and only because of Akane)

Ain’t teamwork a beautiful thing?

It has been a while since I last posted about this series, so this pretty much a catch up for me after Calawain lamented the failings of Natsuru Boy-type. While Boy-type is clearly inferior in every way it was wonderful to see how Shizuku and Akane operated though I am glad that Akane is making a little headway. Sakura is much more delicious when she is evil with her White Kampfer harem in tow, the only worthy contribution she has made was bash Natsuru Boy-type in front of Natsuru Girl-type. The final battle was kind of meh, but it did provide for the harem end, or rather the anyone but Sakura end that I had wished for. As the saying goes be careful what you wish for because it might come true…and in this case a total Dark Sakura victory with her as mistress of a Red, White, and Blue Kampfer harem would have been preferable, but it just was not to be. I suppose that while the premise has been done to death the characters have made it much more fun than I would have otherwise expected.Shizuku has won my respect as the greatest, but my sympathies remain with poor Akane who has tried ever so hard and was willing to kiss Shizuku again. Mikoto was a late addition, but I liked her well enough seeing as how she actually watched Macross 7. The last power up was pretty much Women’s Armor taken a few steps overboard but I confess that I was grinning through it all, mostly out of disbelief that they actually went that far. In the end I suppose all is well since Shizuku is willing to kiss girls, and Akane and Mikoto are willing to go for Natsuru Girl-type and jump at opportunities to do so. Also Dark Sakura is still out there with her White Kampfer yuri harem, so her total victory might one day come. I look forward to the bonus episode, and hope to have some time to help Calawain with the last post and final thoughts.

Calawain’s Crossdressing Corner

Aside from hearing Shizuku’s moans of pleasure, episode 10 was again pretty retarded. He looked like he was in so much pain seducing Shizuku, and I raged. She’s definitely too much woman for him. But lord that scene was quite arousing at times. The yuri masochistic devotion to Sakura was also kinda hot, but also rather disturbing. I liked the last scene where Sakura taunted Shizuku from behind like that, reminded me of a certain well-meme’d scene from Code Geass R2. Onii-sama?

And in episode 11 again we get Shizuku and Natsuru-boy-type having a bit of a makeout session and foreplay. She is so far ahead of the other girls, and Natsuru definitely needs an aggressive girl to keep him from pussyfooting about everything. Of course Natsuru went wagging his tails back to yandere evil mistress Sakura, and got his lame ass hypnotized again.

The battle scene was hilariously bad, as the white’s lasted all of 2 seconds and got summarily one-rounded. Battle music was pretty decent though, Nomad has done a pretty solid job on the music front throughout. Then we had some rather eye-rolling dialogue as Sakura explained how she got Natsuru and was going to get rid of them all. The worst and thus most hilarious part was them getting sprung and becoming infected with clothes eating disease and then fighting to Christmas music. Natsuru grows a tiny bit of sack at the very end, but it was short lived. Then he seems to be in great pain while being forced to feel up three hot girls. Fuck you man.

So with this year about to conclude it is worth mentioning what a glorious year of Yuri it was and how it was a decent year for a few select heterosexual couples. While there are cretins who chafe about the lack of quality series their numbers are few and they are stupid for having such narrow tastes. It gloriously began with Mariaholic with Kanako concocting glorious fantasies of a Yuri world and ruined Shizu for marriage though her final victory was thwarted by a most dangerous and skilled trap. Despite the lack of Best End for Kanako I do hope that one day she will mature into a powerful master of the Yuri and claim the yuri harem that her loli angel had prepared for her. Sadly it was also a winter of despair as the hateful Saji and those CB terrorists brought ruin upon Soma and Louise and forced them into tyrannous hetero pairings with loser animu males. Skip Beat! had Kyoko confess her undying love for Moko despite persistent speculation that Kyoko has even a drop of affection for Shotaro.

Spring brought K-On with Mugi-chan giving Ritsu ample opportunity to claim Mio and ruin her for marriage. But the best was yet to come as summer introduced us to a paragon of Yuri Virtue in the form of Alphardonee-sama . Even now her prowess has yet to be matched and she remains one of the more unforgettable heroines that have wielded the Yuri. Such was he grace that she has become the Gold Standard against which all heroines will be measured by. Riding along Alphard onee-sama’s side was the redoubtable Liang Qi whose yuri love for Alphard was truely great though sadly it was not to be reciprocated fully. However the union of Alphard and Liang Qi produced a glorious daughter they named Kuroko who inherited many of their best traits and combat prowess. While not as powerful or great Marin and Kanon were a delightful pair whose yuri love was sadly unconsummated because of silly rules and Kanon being bi. Also of note was the yuri baiting series Kampfer which I found to be a riot for it delivered consistent yuri despite the presence of a male whose loyalty would have been most praiseworthy had he not been so misguided. There was also Aoi Hana, Saki, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, and Sasameki but we didn’t cover them nearly as much this year though I might manage considering the horrid lack of yuri this winter. So comrades let us toast to this glorious year that will be long remembered and possibly sorely missed as 2010 reaches every corner of the globe.

Calawain’s- Traps, Nopan, and an Unstable Teleporting Lesbian

I’m a rather devout fan of yuri, giving every show with it at least a shot, and wow, there were a glut of shows with yuri content in them in 2009. One of the most anticipated yuri titles in awhile was Sasameki Koto, which was a decent enough adaptation. I found that Kazama’s seiyuu and character were pretty weak and heavy on the emo, but Murasame’s voice was perfect, and I felt that they really nailed her deadpan side as well as the delusional one. Also, can’t forget the awesomeness that was Akemiya the trap, above. They also managed to insert a heap of humor throughout, and didn’t get bogged down in Aoi Hana-like melodrama.

Railgun managed to definitely snag the best comedy yuri title of the year, with the impassioned Kuroko wholeheartedly stealing the show with her antics of Biribiri love and abuse. I came for the Biribiri, but stayed for the Kuroko. Now if only they could come up with a plot that isn’t total trash. Oh, and ditch the other two “protagonists,” Uiharu and Saten, what a glut of boredom those two manage to inspire.

By far the best yuri title of the year in my mind is Saki, whose yuri antics (among other things) I covered previously. The show featured a rather large collection of yuri pairings, and everyone had their favorite (shamefully, I’ll take the often overexposed Saki and Nodotits). What was fascinating is that even though people had their favorites, there was rarely any hate for other pairings, just an appreciation for the deliciousness of it all. My image folder for Saki is filled with more than just two characters thanks to /a/. What began, ostensibly, as a show about mahjong certainly ended up being about yuri and a lack of panties. Saying that Saki is about mahjong is kind of like saying FLCL is about robots and aliens, right?

ExecutiveOtaku’s ‘The Sound and the Yuri’

While I do not worship at the Temple of Yuri as my comrade Crusader does (i.e. I don’t specifically enjoy yuri just for the yuri), this past year has delivered a number of great shows that had high yuri content. Maria Holic was a great comedy. Evil trap roommate, Kanako’s angel song, nearly Hosaka-level daydreams, oh-so-SHAFT animation and humor elements, and that great ending song/animation. Maria Holic was definitely in my favorite comedies of the year, probably second after the newest Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and it had plenty of competition this year. Plus it had the amazing Matsurika, deadpan abusive maid commentator extraordinaire. K-On, while not explicitly yuri, definitely brought the lulz with it’s yuri undertones in several scenes. Tsumugi quickly became my favorite for her elegance and feigned ignorance while she secretly shipped her friend together. Behind those oddly cute eyebrows lurks a sharp and devious intelligence.

Moving on to action, Canaan was not my favorite show ever, but it had some great moments in it. Alphard was an amazing antagonist, at times a master of frontal assault, at others a deliciously cunning trickster. Backed up by her crazy, obsessive, failed yuri-love Liang Qi (GET SOME GET SOME), it made for some great action scenes and was a decent if not amazing show. Finally, on to more dramatic things, Aoi Hana, which I’m still working on finishing, brought us some lovely yuri romance and equally lovely visual style. As my love for Honey and Clover and Kimi ni Todoke shows, I’m a sucker for those watercolor landscape and location shots, and Aoi Hana knew just where to hook me by setting the story in Kamakura, one of my favorite places I’ve ever been to. Despite a little too much of the waterworks early on, I’m looking forward to a satisfying ending to what is so far a very nice yuri love story.

Additionally, all these series had some pretty good music. K-On centered around it, giving viewers a lot to listen to. Maria Holic’s wonderful ‘Kimi ni Mune Kyun (Kyun!)‘ ending theme was catchy and nicely executed in 16-bit style, both visually and in its audio.  Aoi Hana’s OP, Aoi Hana by Kukikodan,  started off as slow and kind of sad, but moved to a more upbeat tone, and seeing Akira and Fumi dancing around together was both cute and beautifully animated. Canaan had quite the badass OP right from the first electric guitar notes, Mind as Judgement. And that countdown featuring all the main characters was one of my favorite elements in an OP this year.

Crusader’s The Fighter, The Dreamer, and The Lover

While it was a glorious year overall I have to make special mention for Mariaholic, Canaan, and Railgun. I have never wavered in advocating love between otome as the state of animu males is generally lacking, but Mariaholic brought a good number of glorious Kanako fantasies that just SMASHED REALITY INTO ATOMS IN THE NAME OF SHINING ZEUS while poor Kanako never had a night of forever and ever with the harem that was rightfully hers it was most fun to bear witness to her flights of fancy. Having now ruined Shizu for marriage I hope that Kanako will become the mistress of yuri that we all know that she is capable of being. Alphard onee-sama simply out shone every yuri heroine of the year as she is indeed an heir of Chikane’s legacy as Alphard is indeed an ojou-sama from a distinguished family that has been continued for a thousand years, skilled in both literary and military arts, with wit and beauty, the intensity of summer, the grace of autumn, the pride of winter, and the gentleness of spring. Such is her greatness that she can outfight most of the boys that marred this season, save perhaps Prince Ali himself (it’d be a draw really since they come from the same school of CQC) and of course ALMIGHTY ZEUS (really I’d like to see someone other than Hades try, could use another instance of AWESOME TYPE ROCKET PUNCH). Alphard consummated her yuri love with Canaan producing a daughter maned Misaki who inherited the latter’s super powers and she also raised a wondrous daughter named Kuroko with Liang Qi. Thoughtful, loving, and mighty Alphard was everything that any one should aspire to be, sure she made a few mistakes, but at least she strove to correct them while liberating Canaan Mk II from the shadow of Siam. Final mention goes to Kuroko whose love of her onee-sama is almost as intense as her mother Liang Qi’s and whose martial prowess makes Alphard smile with pride. All in all it was a good year with many heroines worthy of praise, a year like this might not come again for quite some time. For the fans of yuri at least for this year anime was worth watching despite the cries of decline from the hordes of hetero harem animu infidels. So IN THE NAME OF SHINING ZEUS HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I know Crusader asked me to post in his absence, and I really wanted to, I did. But every time I sat there and told myself to do the blog post I couldn’t contain the rage, it all just bubbled up the surface like on some MS paint-inspired animated gif. Natsuru’s character type is a cancer upon anime these days: the wet noodle, milquetoast, dense male lead that is especially prevalent in harem shows. The fact that side characters comment at how dense he is on a regular basis doesn’t mitigate this atrocity. That kind of guy ranks right up there with melodramatic emo characters in my hall of shame. So yeah, fuck you Natsuru.

It is with great relief that we accept your return.

The glorious return of Mikoto was most welcome as not only is she genki but she also fulfills the role of osana-najimi for both Natsuru Girl-type and Akane so already she has a decided advantage when it comes to yuri bliss when compared to Sakura. The Quasi Maid Cafe was so much fun as the exploitation of Natusur Girl-type continued, oh sure there was some idiot boy (must have been Shin in disguise) who ordered a low priced coffee like some cheap bastard. Thankfully the class VP is about as underhanded as Dick Cheney (though so much HAWTER and better) and she gave him a concoction which I suspect was anti-freeze laced with turpentine. Shizuku and Sakura pool their money to get the super expensive escort service though Zeus was most furious that Sakura was trying to go on a date behind Akane’s back. I was most relieved when Mikoto decided to intervene decisively and had Natsuru Girl-type chase her around the school. The fight was fun as Mikoto showed her Yandere side, though it was wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, and with the wrong enemy. Nevertheless it was a chance for Akane to come to the rescue and she did so marvelously as she grabbed Natsuru Girl-type at the waist and dropped her once the BIG FIGHT started. Mikoto subsequent shock was understandable as Natsuru Boy-type’s meido cosplay was disturbing to say the least…

Sakura wants to have a night that goes on forever and ever but Shizuku got wind of it and brought Akane along to sabotage the whole affair. The Packy game was excellent as Shizuku took Akane’s first kissu and left Akane overawed. Zeus granted Akane an opportunity to be first to steal Natsuru Girl-type’s lips but alas it was not to be. Still unlike Zyl Almighty Zeus has not abandoned Akane and made sure that no matter what Sakura would not win even a single chance. Considering the amount of Packy Shizuku must have kissed Akane numerous times I just hope that the special edition DVD will have a close up of Akane’s first kissu. Zeus even guided Mikoto to the location of Sakura’s stuffed animal fortress to ensure that Sakura would not emerge victorious so early on. I am certain that the Lord of Awesome Type Rocket Punches is going for the anyone but Sakura pairing, so Sakura better start playing by the rules. Sadly Sakura seeks to have an unfair advantage, and in flagrant disregard for the Rules of Courtship as written by Patrick, Sakura steals into Natusru’s bed in the dead of night like some devious Jihad-kun. Thankfully Zeus’ rage was infinite and from Bardos Island reverted Natsuru back to being a Boy-type as to give Sakura a most unwelcome surprise. Akane sensed a disturbance in the Yuri and sallied forth to challenge Sakura and blew out part of ceiling to announce her anger and frustration. In a bit of dere dere Kampfer Akane tries to confess her feelings of true love for Natsuru and her willingness to tolerate the existence of the Boy-type. Instead of a full confession it seems that the last lot of recipients of Sakura’s babies were fated to form the White Team. Rika-chan is the first to attack Fortress Sakura, though she is quickly bested by Shizuku.

I have my doubts that this story is going to be complex but for the most part things do seem to follow some modicum of logical progression as four Entrails Animals were tossed out by the Slug Queen Sakura in episode 5, Rika was the pink haired loli which leaves the remaining three. Poor Akane can’t seem to get a clean hit on anyone these days though I suppose that, like me, she just needs to focus on her target instead of be consumed by frustration that Natsuru- Girl-type is SUGOI thick. Still I guess Shizuku will remain the strongest though perhaps like a fighting game Schwert beats Gewehr, Gewehr beats Zauber, and Zauber beats Schwert in a rock-paper-scissors set up. If that is the case things look bad for Akane as Schwert seems to be very popular in the metagame, in fact it is almost as bad as 40K where everyone plays Space Marines. Still I really felt bad for Akane when she mustered up all her courage to try and confess, only to be interrupted. Seven eps in and I am still having so much fun, though next week is going to be a love song to Shizuku, I expect Calawain to be left twitching on the floor when it gets subbed. Mikoto has proved to be a rather light addition as her strategy seems predicated on setting up Natsuru Boy-type for failure and then swooping in to claim her prize once the official rejection from Sakura is given. Still I guess in small doses Mikoto is fairly awesome as she too has some Yandere tendencies and if things go bad for my OTP I can ship AkanexMikoto as the osana-jimi pair. While I acknowledge Shizuku as a great kisser I do not see her as a one woman kind of gal, nothing short of being a mistress of her own yuri harem would suffice for a woman of her stature, but we shall see. With the arrival of the White Team I wonder if we are going to get more fighting or more yuri, I am hoping for both. Also I noticed how they tweaked the OP to edit out Sakura kissing wieners and put in Mikoto, Zeus be praised for this change!

Calawain’s Crossdressing Corner

Akane failed to channel her inner Matoi, she can’t run away when confronted with a rival. She must be relentless in her stalking and assertiveness. Meanwhile, at the Maid Cafe, once again Shizuku comes through with the entertaining torment of Natsuru. And if Sakura knows something about the Kampfer she’s got a great poker face. Finally, Akane has the most horrible aim with her guns, for being someone who specializes in it. Think of all the bullets she’s fired in 7 episodes and how few have hit anything of importance.

The Pocky game was interesting, if a bit eye-rolling and uncreative. There are much steamier ways to introduce that kind of material, I guess they decided on the easy route. Shizuku on the other hand, always brings the awesome with the “accidental” spilling of curry to create a stimulating bath scene. Not as stimulating as the futon spooning, though that would have been a lot more interesting had they let it run its course rather than some random idiot new Kampfer popping out of nowhere to introduce herself. Plus she interrupted Akane’s confession (somewhat forgiven by being voiced by Kana Ueda).

Yes, as Crusader has foreseen I am looking forward to next week’s dayto episode with Shizuku.

The day of reckoning has finally come and for some reason it seems that the girls are putting in 110% while the boys are making pathetic attempts to become traps. At any rate it seems that in the lead up to the Festival the yuri fangirls were out in force and took the best seats in the house and/or slaughtered enough the male student body that competition for seats was minimal. This high school rocks as the Wildlife Hottie society has more women than men and these women can count SUGOI fast. So Natsuru Girl-type waltzes out as a Revolutionary Girl, but Sakura ruins everything with her over dramatic shoujo manga storyline (it hurt so much because it sounded so damn familiar), but Akane saves the day as Mysterious Girl A. It’s always more fun with Kampfer Akane as she stammered over a kissu, sadly not only did Akane fail to make good on her checkmate move and turn Sakura into a honeycomb, but she missed out on stealing the first kissu despite an uproarious demand that she stake Natsuru Girl-type’s lips. While Normal Akane gets trampled and roped in as a side dish for Natsuru Girl-type cosplays, Kampfer Akane was given a free pass, but alas she was too tsun tsun to do it. Still I hope her heart went SUGOI doki doki when Natsuru Girl-type was on top for once. I’ll leave it to Calawain to fanboy and pray for Shizuku to treat him like a pig, but in any case Shizuku won in the end and took Natsuru Boy-type’s first kiss. No doubt Shizuku-sama is a GREAT kisser, but nevertheless THAT ONLY COUNTS AS ONE. Also she who takes Natsuru Girl-types first kissu will be declared the Winner and a Woman of Destiny.

In other news it seems that Sakura forcibly conscripted four young otome with attitude as a possible third faction and Mikoto comes back but misses out on all the action. However Sakura in her infinite wickedness makes Mikoto into a Red Kampfer forcing two osana-jimi to fight against each other. As series that makes numerous references I am not too sure if only using lines is going to work all that well, I am not sure if a visual cue would have helped, but it does flatter my nerd sensibilities when I recognize certain lines. The “Are you my wings?” comment was disproportionately funny for me since it was one of my Alto-hime’s lamer lines. Still Kampfer continues to meet my expectations, limited in scope though they may be, and I hope the eye catches continually improve for I hope for my Kampfer Akane x Kampfer Natsuru one, I am sure it would be something. Still next week is The Return of Mikoto!

I felt the drool coming down with Shizuku’s appearance halfway through the episode perched upon high with her legs crossed alluringly. Yum. I was very dissapointed in Natsuru’s lack of excitement over her offer to have him watch her change. He’s no fun sometimes.

The references in this show are quite often excessively lame. Why Shizuku had to dress up as Lelouch of all people…couldn’t it have been something sexier? I mean yeah he’s feminine and all, but not in a sexy way unless you are into BL. She made up for it with the hot makeout with Natsuru Boy-Type complete with the spit trail. But first she had a little bit of fun while telling us of her dreams of becoming a comedian, should she succeed as I am confident that she shall, then her humor will be most black. At any rateShizuku is most adept at this seduction thing, I have not the words to describe so I shall let Calawain sing praise to Shizuku. It is most telling how no one seems to take Natsuru’s assertions that she is guy seriously. Even Akane calls Natsuru a pussy and a chicken. While Normal Akane has a ways to go Kampfer Akane is awesome I just love it when she curses and insults Natsuru. I give her more credit for gunning for the alleged cheater than the other woman as lesser girls often do. Shizuku goes even further and declares that Natsuru’s humiliation at her hands would only cover the damages that Akane caused, as they were after all partners…

At a loss for what to do for the contest Akane tries to make Natsuru Girl-type sing anime songs, but first they need to purchase proper attire as the school uniform simply would no cut it. They then agree to go shopping and singing, In regards to this almost date it seems thatNatsuru is as thick as Kana and Kyoko when it comes to love, nevertheless Akane makes the most of the opportunity to doll up Natsuru Girl-type. I am sure Kuroko would approve. In the end Shizuku had her fun and it seems Akane’s mission to make Natsuru Girl-type into panther with fish net stockings ended in tragic failure. Combined with the sub par karaoke it seems that Shizuku mocked me with her Hiromi persona, as she sang about, lines someone else drew as not being absolute (clearly a jab at Shinichiro’s written confession to Noe), removing self imposed limits, and randomly taking off her shirt. I wept True Tears of hot rage when I realized what was going on.Sakura being egotistical as ever sang of her time as Ranka, I suppose the cessation of hostilities will not be soon as Ranka is as arrogant as ever when she told Shizuku that she would win despite the strong competition. The winner of the singing contest was clearly Akane as she had more sparkles. While we have yet to meet this Mikoto it seems that she is pretty damn awesome for she is a fan of Fire Bomber and Sheryl Nome, perhaps she is a mechatard as well. Sadly Shizuku was unable to humiliate Natsuru Girl-type and have her sing in a cute voice, but I suppose that will come next week at the culture festival. I hope there Akane will protect the feeling of love in Natsuru Girl-type and turn Sakura into a honey comb.

This series might be garbage, but it is so much fun. I quite enjoyed the BIG FIGHT between Akane and Sakura as Akane was standing up to that bitch. The Macross Reference was just gravy. The show pokes fun at a lot of anime tropes and I very much like the nerdy references though they are obtuse. Besides it is plenty yurilicious enough as is. Still that song about Hiromi’s triumph was rather hard to swallow, Shizuku is indeed a most fearsome master troll.

As Crusader mentioned, I love Shizuku. Obviously not as a shipping with Natsuru or anything like that (Akane fills the obvious part there), but because she’s delicious. That sultry, teasing woman who acts beyond her years I just find really appealing. Once again the episode had no plot, but it was probably the best episode so far because of Shizuku’s manipulations of everyone. Highly entertaining.

So far this was one of the funniest episodes thus far for those of us who watch yuri shows with monastic devotion. They just crammed in the references and ran with it and in my opinion they did a fine job. The plot is pretty lame any ways so they might as well take it to the limit with the yuri fanservice, and boy was there a lot of it. Unlike Calawain I am willing to tolerate the Class 2-4 since they were willing to cash in on their new heroine and pimp her out to the how school for money. To get rich is glorious indeed. On the Sakura front the dumb bitch is getting possessive and trying to monopolize Natsuru Girl-type. Fortunately Akane is willing to protect the feeling of love in Natsuru Girl-type’s heart and will love her even if she assumes her guy form. Akane’s love is so deep that it blows everyone else out the water as Shizuku’s rumor of Natsuru Girl-type being hetero brought forth denunciations of the alleged vile betrayal. While it was a hasty reaction on the part of the female student body, it was understandable given how lamentable Natsuru Boy-type is. Still poor Akane is facing an uphill battle for Nat-chan’s attentions as in the class-room she cannot use her Kampfer form to assert her dominance over the rest of them. If nothing else I just love how Akane fluctuates between tsun tsun and dere dere, given how shallow Sakura is. Hopefully after The Return of Mikoto Akane might get some help against Sakura. If this keeps up then Kampfer will earn a slot as one of the pillars for this glorious Year of Yuri.

Another show that decided that plot was for losers, and this one instead decided to focus on a school filled with sex-crazed lesbians. I always roll my eyes at the whole “secret garden of maidens” concept, as it’s laughably false in real life, and I wouldn’t call any of these lusty females “maidens.” However, that’s not to say that it wasn’t amusing, if a bit hamfisted, watching all the girls go ga-ga over Natsuru’s booby form. And those three idiots from Natsuru’s new class dragging her/him around for photo shoots and such were rather irritating, and I’d like it if those characters didn’t make any more appearances, as doubtful as that is.

Akane was pleasingly getting more assertive and jealous, seemingly uncaring as to whether Natsuru is in female or male form, proving her True Love. I sense OTP here until the childhood friend comes back and causes trouble. Good to see Shizuku up and around stirring up trouble with that sultry voice of hers, she’s got a wicked hot devious smile. Another good entry in the official Year of Yuri.

Still stuck behind the Great Fire Wall, and while Kampfer is as deep as a puddle it is still very much enjoyable unless your one of those IT MUST BE DEEP AND SRS BUSINESS types. So Akane starts her scheme to monopolize Girl-type Natsuru from the predations of the idiot Sakura, and unlike your typical love interest Akane is not above actively sabotaging Natsuru. I am very glad despite the inherent meekness of Akane’s megane form that she is still capable of thinking deviously in addition to having fantasies that might one day be as glorious as those of Kanako’s and Hosaka’s. In the mean time though Akane spends a bit of time in Natsuru’s room it ends chastely and all the typical stuff that happens when a girl goes into a guy’s room actually doesn’t happen except in Akane’s mind. The stupid dance was indeed stupid but it seems Student Body President Shizuku took a liking to it.

As a member of the Red Team Shizuku not only oozes womanly charm and danger she seems to outclass both Members of the Blue Team. Poor Akane gets defeated soundly but in the end LOVE AND PEACE FRIENDSHIP prevails and Akane ends up on top with help from Natsuru Girl-type. Natsuru Girl-type makes an offer that Shizuku can’t refuse though the latter vows revenge. Akane tells Natsuru to shove it, and in the end Shizuku gets delicious revenge by forcing Natsuru to stay in Girl-type form. With this I think that we shall be seeing less of boy-type and more Girl-type Natsuru and much yuri goodness shall ensue. Next week we get to see more of the Girl Side of the Berlin Wall and it seems to be a Marimite Republic…and with any luck we shall have as many otome in love with other otome. It also probable that Girl-Type Natsuru has to move in with Akane so I hope Akane makes the most of it. Still I wonder how many more Geography Lessons we will have until Mikoto makes her return, not that I am ticked off that they actually know their geography but I am sure much fun and curry will be had once she arrives. Like my good comrade Calawain I don’t mind in teh least that it is shallow and like it more because they don’t pretend that it is deep. The references can be hit or miss but at least they are accessible to a mechatard like me. Still I do hope for Natsuru Girl-type to get two bazookas, a shotgun, and a chain mine.

Marina Inoue doing the male Natsuru’s voice still sounds retarded, but Kaori Nazuka’s voicing of the student council president is quite delicious. I like the soft and sultry tones she brought out in the fight at the school, and I love long haired bishoujos. Akane of course was awesome in her Kampfer mode, and it’s good to see the meeker side of her get a bit more assertive around Natsuru (although she’s still got a ways to go). By the way producers, the voice actor jokes with the stuffed animals are rather stupid.

There was even halfway decent action BGM during the fight scenes when you consider that this is just some fetish fanservice show. They even made Star Wars references in the next episode preview, I’m weak for that kind of nonsense. Less stupid exposition this week, more bishoujos and fake yuri, thumbs up from me.

Sorry this is so very late but this month reality has been wreaking terrible vengeance on me at work and at home. So it seems that the boys and girls of gg have branded Kampfer as the shittiest thing they have ever subbed, but me thinks their memory be too short. In any case gg being honest aside Kampfer seems less like a poor man’s Queen’s Blade and more like a satire of magical girl at least to me any way. Instead of having a little girl who seeks to better herself and her love life we get a boy who chases a lesbian, such is this boy’s sorry state that his powered up form is a girl. That alone says plenty of the decrepit state of the Japanese male and the weaboos who want to be them. At any rate Kampfer is the perfect way to maximize the seiyu talent they brought on board and they will not let the viewer forget it. I am of the opinion that any fan of the cast should tune in and endure the pain to hear them SHINE IN THE NAME OF ZEUS. Any one who refuses will have theirfanboy/fangirl license revoked and are unworthy of Zeus’ light and are the kind of sick cowards who afraid of paper cuts. I confess I do take an inordinate amount of  sadistic glee at reading how many braincells people lost as a result of this it is my sincere hope thatgg solidify their reputation for trolling by helping Kampfer kill braincells and kill more braincells. Ah yes a great cry went out into the blogoshpere as is if a great many people suddenly cried out in pain and then suddenly fell silent…I think something wonderful has happened! Long live Brokeness! Be it broken sexual preferences or BROKEN MINDS! Kampfer shall SMASH EVERY BRAIN CELL INTO ATOMS!

While this show is decidedly fan servicey I was surprised by the utter lack of panty shots to go with it and withing the series itself the only henshin sequence was that of the dude which does mitigate the fappability for most I suppose but increase exponentially for some. As a veteran of all of Ranma 1/2 this genderbend is nothing new, and also since THAT is supposed to cover as many trap centered animu series as we can I have been volunteered to slog through this, as Calawain and ExecutiveOtaku pay good money for all of my weaponry and medical benefits.Also Impz is still desperately trying to earn enough money to marry 13Sugars so it basically leaves me as I have little appreciation for fear and seem to be impervious to pain so long as there is yuri, to spread the gospel of trappiness . At any rate I did like the fluid combat though it isn’t top level stuff yet, but at least there is promise that things might get better once the Blue Team loses their rookie status. I have to commend them for going with a Red vs. Blue dynamic and hope that there will be a most interesting debate about how to name vehicles be it warthog or puma. While ghostlightning thought the references were lame I have to disagree since 0080 is but a dim and distant memory for most fans these days and they also inserted a Turn AGundam reference as well as a Planetes one too. Given how the staff seems to have decent taste in Gundam (0080 was good but I worry about this lack of 8th MS Team and 0083 love) I hold out hope that they are not totally incompetent.

At any rate given how much magical girl anime I have watched of the the course of my miserable existence Kampfer does use many of the same tropes, and subverts them like in the case of those animal sidekicks. Hell even the love interest being in love with the alter-ego is dragged out for a beating as Sakura seems to have the hots for Natsuru girl-type and thinks the male type is a sack of potatoes. The male lead while nominally male lives in a SUGOI pink house and while it does have that harem animu setup as a guy only Akane is showing any interest in his male form, but Akane is also bi and likes Girl-type Natsuru too. While we have seen many of those gut wrenching boy on top of girl scenes before I think they played it for laughs when the book was getting all the action, even the class president called them out for their behavior, and most delightfully of all was that Akane tried to throw Natsuru under the bus as a lecherous bastard. I agree that on the surface it is nothing new but I do believe that Nomad is trolling mahou shoujo and harem at the same time. Admittedly most magical girl shows have reasons for fighting, but not all of them are good and seem more like fetch quests anyways, and here it is simply cast aside with no reason being given other than they must all fight because they are elite. Guess what, it works well enough since the winner getting some sort of prize has been done to death and why bother coming up with a shit justification when you can have fighting for the sake of fighting, at least that is a little more honest than crap like World Peace.

I have even found my OTP in AkanexGirl-Type Natsuru as Akane is Bi and therefore awesome. Maybe it will be like Wagaya Oniari-sama in that Girl-Type Natsuru becomes the predominant form. Either way this is THAT and thus for better or worse this is a keeper.

This is one of those series whose story premise sounds much more retarded in animated form when you have to listen to the seiyuu tell it compared to glazing over it in manga or book form. I mean, the story is really stupid, girls (or Natsuru) become Kampfer and they have to fight! In addition, Maria Inoue sounds really horrible voicing a guy, not believable in the least. She sounds great as the female Natsuru, but wow it sounds really bad in “male” form.

That being said I still enjoyed the episode generally, surprisingly enough Hocchan pulled off Akane’s batshit insane Kampfer personality wonderfully. We had a decent amount of action (I can see where they sent the budget from the second half of Yoku Wakaru) and lots of cute bishoujos to go around. Plus lots of German words (German always sounds wicked in militaristic settings), although probably used incorrectly. Good thing I don’t know German and won’t care. I’ll be watching this show, and perhaps leaving my 2 cents when Crusader makes posts on it.
