So with this year about to conclude it is worth mentioning what a glorious year of Yuri it was and how it was a decent year for a few select heterosexual couples. While there are cretins who chafe about the lack of quality series their numbers are few and they are stupid for having such narrow tastes. It gloriously began with Mariaholic with Kanako concocting glorious fantasies of a Yuri world and ruined Shizu for marriage though her final victory was thwarted by a most dangerous and skilled trap. Despite the lack of Best End for Kanako I do hope that one day she will mature into a powerful master of the Yuri and claim the yuri harem that her loli angel had prepared for her. Sadly it was also a winter of despair as the hateful Saji and those CB terrorists brought ruin upon Soma and Louise and forced them into tyrannous hetero pairings with loser animu males. Skip Beat! had Kyoko confess her undying love for Moko despite persistent speculation that Kyoko has even a drop of affection for Shotaro.

Spring brought K-On with Mugi-chan giving Ritsu ample opportunity to claim Mio and ruin her for marriage. But the best was yet to come as summer introduced us to a paragon of Yuri Virtue in the form of Alphardonee-sama . Even now her prowess has yet to be matched and she remains one of the more unforgettable heroines that have wielded the Yuri. Such was he grace that she has become the Gold Standard against which all heroines will be measured by. Riding along Alphard onee-sama’s side was the redoubtable Liang Qi whose yuri love for Alphard was truely great though sadly it was not to be reciprocated fully. However the union of Alphard and Liang Qi produced a glorious daughter they named Kuroko who inherited many of their best traits and combat prowess. While not as powerful or great Marin and Kanon were a delightful pair whose yuri love was sadly unconsummated because of silly rules and Kanon being bi. Also of note was the yuri baiting series Kampfer which I found to be a riot for it delivered consistent yuri despite the presence of a male whose loyalty would have been most praiseworthy had he not been so misguided. There was also Aoi Hana, Saki, Taishou Yakyuu Musume, and Sasameki but we didn’t cover them nearly as much this year though I might manage considering the horrid lack of yuri this winter. So comrades let us toast to this glorious year that will be long remembered and possibly sorely missed as 2010 reaches every corner of the globe.

Calawain’s- Traps, Nopan, and an Unstable Teleporting Lesbian

I’m a rather devout fan of yuri, giving every show with it at least a shot, and wow, there were a glut of shows with yuri content in them in 2009. One of the most anticipated yuri titles in awhile was Sasameki Koto, which was a decent enough adaptation. I found that Kazama’s seiyuu and character were pretty weak and heavy on the emo, but Murasame’s voice was perfect, and I felt that they really nailed her deadpan side as well as the delusional one. Also, can’t forget the awesomeness that was Akemiya the trap, above. They also managed to insert a heap of humor throughout, and didn’t get bogged down in Aoi Hana-like melodrama.

Railgun managed to definitely snag the best comedy yuri title of the year, with the impassioned Kuroko wholeheartedly stealing the show with her antics of Biribiri love and abuse. I came for the Biribiri, but stayed for the Kuroko. Now if only they could come up with a plot that isn’t total trash. Oh, and ditch the other two “protagonists,” Uiharu and Saten, what a glut of boredom those two manage to inspire.

By far the best yuri title of the year in my mind is Saki, whose yuri antics (among other things) I covered previously. The show featured a rather large collection of yuri pairings, and everyone had their favorite (shamefully, I’ll take the often overexposed Saki and Nodotits). What was fascinating is that even though people had their favorites, there was rarely any hate for other pairings, just an appreciation for the deliciousness of it all. My image folder for Saki is filled with more than just two characters thanks to /a/. What began, ostensibly, as a show about mahjong certainly ended up being about yuri and a lack of panties. Saying that Saki is about mahjong is kind of like saying FLCL is about robots and aliens, right?

ExecutiveOtaku’s ‘The Sound and the Yuri’

While I do not worship at the Temple of Yuri as my comrade Crusader does (i.e. I don’t specifically enjoy yuri just for the yuri), this past year has delivered a number of great shows that had high yuri content. Maria Holic was a great comedy. Evil trap roommate, Kanako’s angel song, nearly Hosaka-level daydreams, oh-so-SHAFT animation and humor elements, and that great ending song/animation. Maria Holic was definitely in my favorite comedies of the year, probably second after the newest Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and it had plenty of competition this year. Plus it had the amazing Matsurika, deadpan abusive maid commentator extraordinaire. K-On, while not explicitly yuri, definitely brought the lulz with it’s yuri undertones in several scenes. Tsumugi quickly became my favorite for her elegance and feigned ignorance while she secretly shipped her friend together. Behind those oddly cute eyebrows lurks a sharp and devious intelligence.

Moving on to action, Canaan was not my favorite show ever, but it had some great moments in it. Alphard was an amazing antagonist, at times a master of frontal assault, at others a deliciously cunning trickster. Backed up by her crazy, obsessive, failed yuri-love Liang Qi (GET SOME GET SOME), it made for some great action scenes and was a decent if not amazing show. Finally, on to more dramatic things, Aoi Hana, which I’m still working on finishing, brought us some lovely yuri romance and equally lovely visual style. As my love for Honey and Clover and Kimi ni Todoke shows, I’m a sucker for those watercolor landscape and location shots, and Aoi Hana knew just where to hook me by setting the story in Kamakura, one of my favorite places I’ve ever been to. Despite a little too much of the waterworks early on, I’m looking forward to a satisfying ending to what is so far a very nice yuri love story.

Additionally, all these series had some pretty good music. K-On centered around it, giving viewers a lot to listen to. Maria Holic’s wonderful ‘Kimi ni Mune Kyun (Kyun!)‘ ending theme was catchy and nicely executed in 16-bit style, both visually and in its audio.  Aoi Hana’s OP, Aoi Hana by Kukikodan,  started off as slow and kind of sad, but moved to a more upbeat tone, and seeing Akira and Fumi dancing around together was both cute and beautifully animated. Canaan had quite the badass OP right from the first electric guitar notes, Mind as Judgement. And that countdown featuring all the main characters was one of my favorite elements in an OP this year.

Crusader’s The Fighter, The Dreamer, and The Lover

While it was a glorious year overall I have to make special mention for Mariaholic, Canaan, and Railgun. I have never wavered in advocating love between otome as the state of animu males is generally lacking, but Mariaholic brought a good number of glorious Kanako fantasies that just SMASHED REALITY INTO ATOMS IN THE NAME OF SHINING ZEUS while poor Kanako never had a night of forever and ever with the harem that was rightfully hers it was most fun to bear witness to her flights of fancy. Having now ruined Shizu for marriage I hope that Kanako will become the mistress of yuri that we all know that she is capable of being. Alphard onee-sama simply out shone every yuri heroine of the year as she is indeed an heir of Chikane’s legacy as Alphard is indeed an ojou-sama from a distinguished family that has been continued for a thousand years, skilled in both literary and military arts, with wit and beauty, the intensity of summer, the grace of autumn, the pride of winter, and the gentleness of spring. Such is her greatness that she can outfight most of the boys that marred this season, save perhaps Prince Ali himself (it’d be a draw really since they come from the same school of CQC) and of course ALMIGHTY ZEUS (really I’d like to see someone other than Hades try, could use another instance of AWESOME TYPE ROCKET PUNCH). Alphard consummated her yuri love with Canaan producing a daughter maned Misaki who inherited the latter’s super powers and she also raised a wondrous daughter named Kuroko with Liang Qi. Thoughtful, loving, and mighty Alphard was everything that any one should aspire to be, sure she made a few mistakes, but at least she strove to correct them while liberating Canaan Mk II from the shadow of Siam. Final mention goes to Kuroko whose love of her onee-sama is almost as intense as her mother Liang Qi’s and whose martial prowess makes Alphard smile with pride. All in all it was a good year with many heroines worthy of praise, a year like this might not come again for quite some time. For the fans of yuri at least for this year anime was worth watching despite the cries of decline from the hordes of hetero harem animu infidels. So IN THE NAME OF SHINING ZEUS HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

With the summer season over and the fall coming up shortly, some reflections on the series this blogger has watched (and in one case, dropped). Done in a short format, your own thoughts and comments on these or other summer series are very much welcome. While two of these series have yet to have their last episodes out subbed, I thought I should include them now before everyone gets caught up in the new season and a post like this become irrelevant.

Bakemonogatari

While I was a little put off by the flow of the first episode, by episode two I was really hooked and the show only got better. I’ve loved everything SHAFT since I started watching the first season of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, and in this series they took their unique art style to unconventional and interesting new heights. Very minimalist backgrounds in most cases, repetitive objects (all the cars except for Senjogahara’s dad’s were SR 311 Nissan Fairlady 2000 convertibles, one of my favorites of all time), and scenes with only a few colors/cut ‘card’ scenes with just a color and a few words on it. The characters and monster/spirit stories were all unique and interesting. Dialogue and character relationships were always interesting, quirky,  and well done.  And the ending conversation between Araragi and Senjogahara was just so sweet <3

Notable things: Awesome ED (and to a lesser extent, fun/catchy OP), stuttering (“Ararararagi-kun” ), very unique art style, mythology tie-ins, custom OP for certain episodes.

Sora no Manimani*

The very enjoyable rom-com centered around a high school astronomy club was so much fun to watch and blog this season. While the show isn’t the most revolutionary in terms of setting or style, it does the basics very well that I ended up enjoying it more than a lot of higher concept shows I’ve watched. Comedy was great, drama was very good but the show probably could have used a little bit more. The real-life astronomy information was accurate and presented well, and not to sound like a huge nerd (though I am one), it restarted my own interest in astronomy. The shipping was also a fun side event, with RabbitPoets, Scamp, and myself raising the banners of Mihoshi, Hime, and Fumie respectively. Though we all (unfortunately) know who is the author’s intended OTP. I’m very much looking forward to the last episode and DVD episode. Another season or some OVAs would be great too.

Notable things: accurate astronomy info, nicely animated night sky scenes, our Queen Fumie!, simple but solid.

Canaan

More than just an action show, though not the deepest thing you’ll ever see. Characters and motives, even after seeing the ending, are still somewhat fuzzy in some respects, but if you just enjoy the interestingly developed characters and their motivations set against a fun action background you’ll find it worth watching. I’m not as big a fan as Crusader, but the central motivation for Alphard, combined with how she carried it out was very interesting and made for a nicely complicated pair of characters. Add in some fun side characters and I had a fun, if not amazing time watching it.

Notable things: SUGOI SUGOI, strong yuri undertones, very accurate and well-researched weapons/vehicles (with the exception of the B-2), very crisp animation.

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei*

The continuation of my favorite comedy anime evar (and there’s at least one more season to come too!), ZSZS has probably been my favorite, tied with the first season, yet. Who would have thought something with so much social and political humor would last this long? More numerous and more scathing social commentary and political jokes, new situations for characters, and some interesting new art styles in one episode. More needs to be done with Tsunetsuki the stalker, but other than that things didn’t get stale. And the tinted glasses segment was A+ good. Lots of Chiri in new outfits in the two most recent episodes didn’t hurt in this blogger’s opinion either

Notable things: current events humor especially about the recent Japanese election, still more paranoia about China and North Korea (“that country”), experimental animation.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

This is the series that I ended up dropping, but since I’m commenting on it for three reasons. Firstly, I had great expectations for this show’s premise; second, it seems to have developed a pretty strong following with bloggers; and lastly because I watched half of it so I may as well comment. The premise made me think this was going to be my favorite show of the season. But it felt so sanitized the way that the government response to the earthquake went so well, so quickly. It was like the Japanese government sponsored it to reassure people. I also didn’t like or get into any of the characters, they also just felt unnatural to me or one-dimensional. I’m sure many will disagree, especially with that second point given the cult-like following Yuuki gained. FYI, I continued to follow what happened after I stopped watching via We Remember Love and Scrumptious. Credit where credit is due: I do have to say that the OP animation was eerie as hell for someone who lived in Tokyo for a year and went to many of those places on a regular basis. Big points for that.

Notable things: great premise, great OP song/animation, Cult of St. Yuuki.

Final Thoughts: - Either Bakemonogatari or Sora no Manimani is going to claim the prize for my favorite show of the season. Bakemonogatari had a super-solid last episode, but I’ll wait for the last SoraMani to make my decision. I enjoyed Bakemonogatari more on a technical level (concept and art) but SoraMani is just so much fun even if a much simpler show in artistic terms.

- Of those two favorite shows, I’d love to have more of both. SoraMani is at least getting a DVD extra episode.

- Can SHAFT do no wrong in my eyes?

- I started watching Aoi Hana and fully intend to finish it. But for whatever reason I just wasn’t in the mood after episode 3. Plan to finish by New Year’s at the latest.

Now the tragic conclusion…

So in the end many will have written this off as a “B” Movie but I sincerely think that the symbolism that many others have pointed out still holds true despite the seemingly boring end that we got. To be fair I watched each episode multiple times and watched a few of my favorite scenes on a loop through out the series run. In short this episode pretty my confirmed for me that Alphard was a sort of secret protagonist given here stated goal of freeing Canaan from Siam and replacing him with Maria. While it is not expressly stated it is quite possible that Maria was meant to die to become Canaan’s light as part of the agreement Maria had with Alphard that Maria had forgotten. It wasn’t the typical “I am the only one allowed to defeat you” type of deal but rather it was about Canaan Mk II putting her life together post Siam and Alphard’s redemption and reclaiming her old self. While Canaan’s reliance on Maria eventually played out well enough I think that Alphard’s story warrants special attention since it influences most of the major events in the story.

Alphard always said Maria was full of deception.

While there is much left to be desired in regards to Siam, what is clear is that he taught and encouraged both Alphard and Canaan to be killers of the highest caliber, on the face of it it might seem a bit innocuous until you realize he is training child soldiers that only know how to kill and not how to live. Alphard mentioned that Siam later took on the job of training Canaan and it is still possible that he was training Canaan as an agent of Iron Strife. I don’t think that Alphard felt much love for Siam at the end, at one point she may have been infatuated, but the anger and resentment at having spent her whole life trying to live up to his expectations was not the kind of life she really wanted. She may have been the strongest but in the end she felt hollow and realized that she was forever haunted by his ghost and that she would always be in his shadow and her response was to prove him wrong and destroy his legacy. Alphard didn’t have a cause of her own that she believed in up until the fateful day on the train. Thus when Alphard went to kill him it might have been due to two factors, one to kill off her new enemy and two to kill the man who was largely responsible in turning her into Canaan. It might have been simply because of the realization of what she had become that lead Alphard to kill Siam to prevent him from ruining another little girl’s life. Liang Qi mentioned that Alphard was trapped in that time and could not move on and even Alphard admitted that Liang was right. After that day Alphard sought to correct all the wrongs she ever committed, Hakko was freed, research into Borners was completed but no new Borner weapons were made.

Here it is important to remember that despite Alphard being a terrorist, the people she is fighting aren’t too wholesome either. Natsume was trying to sneak out test subjects from the factory and Santana was helping her accomplish this, Santana may or may not have known but given how he was rather ignorant of who Natsume was, it is just as possible that he did not know. Since the first episode Alphard already had her men maintain a blockade and quarantine on the factory so there was no sudden change of heart on Alphard’s part within the time frame of the 13 episodes we got. Given how the CIA and PRC were involved in making that village disappear it was not simply Alphard acting on her own to ruin the lives of Hakko, Canaan, and Yun Yun. The attack on Shanghai did accomplish one important thing for Alphard, getting the actual cure for the UA virus into the public eye, which up until that point was a secret. Thus with a cure being publicly known the impact of any future UA Virus Bio attack is drastically reduced. Her subsequent handing over the data she got on Borner Weapons came at a point where any further research was simply not worth it. By handing it over none of the powers that Natsume is working for will fund any further attempts to create test subjects. Alphard at this time warned Natsume that she and her group had all the countermeasures and thus made an attempt to dissuade Natsume and her associates from creating any as Alphard could could be paid by any one faction to negate any tactical or strategic worth Borner Weapons might have. Alphard helped create this problem and towards the end she took steps to find a solution.

To thin that my Liege would be the one to underestimate the power of the Yuri…

While Alphard is the titular villain she saves Canaan and Maria plenty of times and despite Liang Qi getting out of line and even betraying her Alphard didn’t do the ruthless thing and simply kill Liang Qi outright. On the contrary Alphard initially forgave Liang’s treachery and Cumming’s insubordination. Alphard did warn Liang Qi about letting her hatred get the better of her and tried to keep Liang Qi out of the big score. I think that Alphard did genuinely like Liang Qi, judging by Liang’s fond memories of her time stalking Alphard onee-sama, Alphard did not mind her company. There is no overt signs that Alphard ever abused Liang Qi, and it is possible that Alphard did not know of Liang Qi’s hobbies. Instead I believe that having Liang Qi around as a little loli while Alphard onee-sama wasted people was probably not good sisterly behavior, and certainly since Alphard use to relish in killing people Liang probably became enamored with that aspect of her dear onee-sama. Liang Qi wasn’t simply useful to Alphard she was loyal and perfectly capable in the arts of villainy, but in the end Liang let hatred consume her. Even if Alphard did not shed tears over Liang’s death she still spoke fondly of her name, I think that Alphard did love Liang Qi in a manner of speaking, just not with the intensity that Liang Qi loved her.

In regards to Canaan not even Canaan herself actually sees any more hatred emanating from Alphard any more and Alphard has taken many steps to ensure the continued survival of both her and Maria until the appointed time. Perhaps it was the realization that Canaan herself was not at fault, but as a remnant of Siam’s ghost she had to be dealt with, for whatever reason Alphard could not bring her self to kill Canaan despite a good number of chances. Maybe it was because she did it out of pity, and certainly whenever they fought Alphard had plenty of advice to give to Canaan. Alphard’s insistence on there only ever being one Canaan isn’t necessarily a statement made out of jealousy but Alphard knew what it meant to be Canaan. Alphard was taught by Siam to feed on hatred and be a monster, and even after she left him Siam created another Canaan who was naive and easily manipulated but frightfully deadly. Alphard’s attempts to bring Maria and Canaan to be closer and her telling Maria to struggle together with Canaan as well as truly love her was essentially a ploy to supplant Siam as the biggest influence in Canaan’s life (Canaan was seeing his ghost quite often) and to break the curse of the tattoo. While Alphard refrained from the use of insults in regards to Canaan she did believe that Canaan was a monster and thus sought manipulate Canaan through Maria instead of trying to reason with her.

In their final battle Canaan realized who Alphard really was and Alphard voluntarily shooting off her own arm was not necessarily due to a refusal to accept Canaan as her savior, but the final act that Alphard felt she had to do to remove the curse of Siam that was embodied by that tattoo. By that time Canaan had already saved herself and Alphard wanted to do the same, she mentioned before that she wanted to reclaim her old self and she identified with the name Alphard rather than with the name that Siam gave her. Despite the distance shot of Alphard at the airport I think that because Alphard wore her hair down that she did in the end succeed in becoming her old self as Loli-Alphard use to wear her hair down before meeting Siam the loss of the tattoo also added to the sense that she had reclaimed her old self. The name Canaan for this series wasn’t about creating a land of hope, but the name Siam gave someone whom he hoped would be the perfect soldier, in the end that makes the two shots that Maria had of Alphard and Canaan Mk II special since it did echo the kinds of photos you would use at a funeral. However while both Alphard and Canaan were no longer bound by Siam’s ghost both found a way to live on afterwards. In the case of Alphard, while there is much moaning about her living I think Alphard still being out there is perfectly fine. It’s not that Alphard is out there still terrorizing the world, but it is very possible that Alphard is still out there frustrating Natsume at every turn and preventing a Borner Arms proliferation. Borner weapons are pretty much useless as long as Alphard lives so Natsume has some good reasons for trying to take out Alphard. Despite Alphard’s defeat and loss of her left arm on the train Alphard SHINES IN THE NAME OF ZEUS and poses such a threat to Natsume that Canaan is tasked with killing her. Now that Canaan and Alphard have a new understanding of each other it’s not just that Canaan has adopted Alphard’s hairstyle, she has also adopted the same short cut over coat, and seems to be a bit wittier when replying to Natsume. Furthermore Canaan chose to part ways from Maria and become a solitary star so to speak. I think there are many ways of interpreting Canaan/Alphard Mk II’s smile in the parting shot, but I do not get the sense that she is going to kill Alphard. Here I suppose the audience is asked to fill in what happens, and for me given how Alphard Mk II is well aware of what Natsume is doing that she might reunite with Alphard on more pleasant terms. Alphard the star is part of the constellation of the Hydra in some parts of the world and as the legend goes the Hydra can have many heads. Given how similar Canaan is now to Alphard I think that the two of them can come to an agreement to troll Natsume.

I might be completely wrong but while there is a general consensus on how PA Works and Type-Moon produced quite a beautifully animated fruit during their collaborations I think that Canaan can be a bit more than that if one decides to connect some of the dots in any manner they wish. If nothing else the animation was good, PA Works proved themselves to be quite competent with this and True Tears, and this is one of the few series that takes the grittiness to a whole new lever when it comes to small arms and Heavy weapons like the MH-60 DAP attack helicopters. Certainly some one at PA Works really loves their weapons and does their research into weapons and units, that alone is an impressive feat that few anime series actually ever bother with. As such while many will describe the story a mediocre the rest of the package is undeniably slick and well constructed. I heartily recommend Canaan to any anime fan who can forgive the lack of an epic story for the sake of a high standard of grittiness seldom matched, fluid animation, Hong Kong action flick inspired combat, and copious amount of yuri subtext.

Final Grade: A-

It’s been a while, but the winning streak was fated to end this time…even if it was through hxx0r eyes.

Apologies for being late again, but once again duty calls and I have been called upon to clean up someone else’s mess. So after the conclusion of Liang Qi’s love it seems that Canaan is quite depressed after seeing Hakko throw her life away. Maria and Canaan’s relationship is now marred by insecurities on both sides. Canaan can’t make sense of her new emotions and Maria realizes that Canaan is a baby, albeit a very deadly baby. Minoru gets the three girls their very own private rail car on the deadliest train in the world, I hear the line ends at some sort of machine world but I have never been. Yun Yun made some SUGOI sandwiches but before they can have a picnic, long time passenger, the mysterious Maetel Alphard decoys Canaan away from Maria as she steals into Canaan’s seat. Alphard tells Maria what her purpose is and tells the truth about how Canaan is crude.Maria gives her thoughts on the matter and they both reach an understanding of sorts. Ever eager to be come a light that can shine on her own Maria accepts the task that Alphard gives her. Maria knows that her infidelity and ungratefulness must be punished but requests that she be allowed to take Alphard onee-sama’s picture. Incidentally it was the best picture she ever took and after she took it Alphard shot her in the stomach so that she could limp her way unto the bombed up carriage. Canaan is easily distracted by ghosts and after getting annoyed with Hakko, shoots her. Sadly because Canaan is not a master troll like Alphard she forgot to use her airsoft gun. Canaan having been distracted by the ghosts of killings past finally realizes that she has left Maria all alone and hurries back only to have a BIG FIGHT with Alphard. While it wasn’t a total blow out like it their unforgettable night in the women’s bathroom, but Alphard maintained the upper hand almost effortlessly and recovered quickly from both of Canaan’s throws. Yun Yun tries to save Maria but Maria wants to have a SUGOI death and has Yun Yun detach her rail car instead.The sudden loss of added Maria SUGOI weight (gained from numerous parfaits and out of season crab buffets) shakes up the whole train causing Alphard to lose her footing and Canaan to recover after having a crushed thumb. With less than a minute to go on the time bomb Canaan is still struggling to match Alphard’s might.

Impression

While the yuri goodness was delectable as always like Kabitzin, I was overawed by the longest performance of Alphard’s skill at arms to date. It certainly was one of the most memorable fights this season and perhaps even this year.The fight in many ways vindicates Liang Qi as a decent enough fighter given that how Canaan was still struggling to compete despite conditions being optimal for Canaan’s power levels to be at their peak. At this juncture Alphard remains largely a mystery and I don’t think it is about proving she is the strongest, if anything she has proven to be the strongest for most of the series. Even during their fight Canaan was at a disadvantage for much of it and she struggled just to keep up despite Maria being trapped and dying. If it were only about superiority Alphard already had Siam’s acknowledgment that she is the strongest soldier, Canaan might exceed what he had in mind but Canaan lacks the kind of discipline that makes Alphard so deadly. Hallucinating right in the middle of it all pretty much proved it, and it wasn’t the first time Alphard had pointed out Canaan’s weaknesses.

I think the critical point here is Siam and the reasons why Alphard and Siam parted ways in such a manner that he ended up dead. A few episodes back Alphard mentioned that Siam took the same job twice and as such even with the accidental discovery it is hard to imagine a mercenary doing something for free only for Canaan to end up at Iron Strife’s top agent. Alphard mentioned that Natsume had contracted Canaan as a bluff to Alphard so it is possible that Siam was contracted to make Canaan the perfect killer as Siam is implied to have intimate knowledge of Canaan’s abilities than would have been otherwise possible if he had not in some way been involved in the ruin of Hakko’s village. Given that Canaan has the UA virus Siam probably didn’t just find her and probably was looking for survivors. In the first episode Natsume was breaking Unblooms out of the factory to further her own research, but was being attacked by the Snakes. Now towards the end it seems clear that Alphard had largely abandoned the facility but was still keeping people away from the area, so things do come full circle and past hints aren’t cast aside with reckless abandon. Hell even Cummings’ talk about short selling in episode 2 came back when the VP was in his war room.

Given that everything seems to come together eventually I think that it might be a bit premature to be like ghostlightning and dismiss this series as purely action and only look at things within a single episode. Early on Alphard disliked the idea of using Borners as weapons and in the end she completed the research with the sample population she already had, for the express purpose of negating any strategic value Borner bio weapons would have. Just about every one with killer intent glows blue, but Alphard being a master troll wasn’t glowing blue. If the intent was to simply make the perfect set up to bring out Canaan’s A game then why even bother asking for Maria’s cooperation? There might be more going on here since we still don’t know what Maria’s powers are as she is probably still a carrier despite having been “cured” given how the last bomb was a dud which resulted in Canaan struggling to shoot a shouta it might be the case. Killing Siam’s ghost could mean a lot of things, Alphard confesses that she has nothing personal against Canaan, and before Alphard dragged Canaan out of the rubble she wanted to see that Maria had become Canaan’s new strength. Alphard’s demand that Canaan demonstrate this might be because despite what Canaan says she is still tied strongly to Siam as Canaan was still having deep conversations with Siam’s ghost. I don’t think that it was being abandoned by Siam that got to Alphard but the realization of what it meant to be Canaan. Alphard was probably taught to feed on hatred, and despite Canaan protesting that soldiers who are born of hate are failures, Canaan is fighting out of hatred. Canaan still blames Alphard for the deaths of those around her despite Canaan being the one who actively killed half of them and in the case of Santana and Hakko got themselves killed. Like Alphard told Liang Qi, it is better to let got of hatred if one cannot control it. Thus I think Alphard had a little chit chat with Maria about how Canaan needed a person who could truly love her, because without that Canaan was easily enough controlled by Natsume and Iron Strife.

There is one thing that still bothers me a bit since Alphard claims to have met Maria before, but the latter had forgotten or pretended to forget, so that has yet to be dealt with, perhaps when that card is finally played everything will be cleared up for good. At the very least they seemed rather intent on setting up Alphard as the woman who went out to set things right again, perhaps this was her atonement for the UA virus, she did give Hakko the chance to live a normal life but she could not be saved. Perhaps if Maria is who Alphard wants her to be then Canaan will no longer be a ghost of Siam, a remnant of the his legacy which Alphard seems to despise. Alphard could have killed Canaan easily enough many times, perhaps her intent on killing the despair is to save Canaan from ending up the way Siam wanted.

Last time on Canaan Natsume was holding Maria and Yun Yun as SUGOI hostages…

Wasting no time at all Alphard onee-sama swings into action to save maria and Yun Yun from Natsume. It seems that Natsume has been furthering the agenda of Area 11 and coordinating the efforts of the Super Powers. Natsume has also been cutting deals and turns out to be the agent Liang Qi was calling all the time. Alphard onee-sama delights in saying Natsume’s first name which is YURI causing Natsume to get really flustered. Alphard tells Natsume that at first she wanted only to make money off of Borner Bio Weapons, but eventually she had a change of heart. Alphard onee-sama gives Natsume the data that all the governments want, but points out that even if they so succeed in mass producing Borners Alphard and the Snakes are the only group that knows how to stop them. Thus in one fell swoop Alphard gave the equivalent of a nuclear plan to every state while announcing that she has the perfect missile shield thus negating any change in the balance of power. Natsume takes her data so that she can sell it for SUGOI money, and takes the opportunity to call Canaan freaky, but Alphard is quite confused as she thinks Canaan is quite cute. As Natsume calls in the US to do the storming, the PLA to take all the credit, and the Japanese to start bragging, Alphard onee-sama destroys the Canaan clone so that no world power will be able to use the body for any useful or sick purpose. Since Alphard has the original there was no need for a pill popping clone.

Maria and Yun Yun rejoin Minoru and Canaan. Mino-san had passed out after giving Hakko a SUGOI hug, but she has sine gone missing. Now that Mino-san is wounded he gets much more female attention than he usually does. As America UH-60s arrive on seen Canaan tells every one to hide as she goes back to get Hakko and Santana’s corpse. Liang realizes that she has been betrayed and prepares for a BIG FIGHT, but just as Liang Qi stockpiles a lot of ordnance, she sees that Alphard onee-sama has come back for her, but is rudely shocked that Cummings has come was well. Alphard onee-sama says that she had asked Cummings to show her what love is and Liang Qi mistakenly believes that Alphard and Cummings shared a kissu. Cummings pleads with Liang Qi to come back with them but even as his non-violent methods left him beaten, he never gave up. Alphard finally relents and finally starts adoring Liang Qi’s body as they duel. Liang Qi isn’t too bad with a broad sword, but is no match for Alphard onee-sama who founded the school of knife fighting that Prince Ali would use so well with devastating effects on Jihad-kun. Alphard wins but just as Liang Qi reaches her climax, Alphard decides to see how Canaan is doing instead, this pisses off Liang Qi who wanted to have make up sex.

As a final act of naughtiness Liang Qi goes to her room, where Alphard is surprised to see what kind of SUGOI hobbies Liang Qi has, and takes some pills without a prescription from Dr. Alphard. Sadly Liang Qi cannot become Canaan Mk III and has precious few moments to live. Alphard though saddened that Liang Qi’s jealousy cannot be over come by her love tells Liang Qi that she figured out Laing Qi’s xanatos gambit. Liang Qi seems to have sold Alphard out to the CIA so that Liang Qi could come to the rescue and Alphard would be forever grateful to her, but Alphard did npot think that this was funny nor amusing. Cummings’ undergoes an emotional heart break as Liang Qi wants him to kill her reflection, Cummings after getting Liang’s assurances of a gohobi and unable to see Liang Qi’s madness continue kills her. As Liang Qi lies dying in his arms she finally hears the confession he could never get from her when they were both alive. As Cummings’ screams out to the heavens of his grief Alphard leaves him to mourn Liang Qi. Alphard admits that Liang was right about her and she declares that her one true name is Alphard Alshua and that she will reclaim her former self.

Canaan kills off five Spec Ops guys and finds Hakko having a night that goes on forever and ever with Santana’s corpse. Canaan begs Hakko to come back with her, but Hakko decides to stay and not enjoy happiness with Minoru. Hakko gives Canaan Yun Yun’s prescription which will hopefully last a while, and Canaan is told to leave Hakko with Santana to be entombed. Canaan rejoins the group though it seems that ever since Alphard became a factor neither Canaan and Maria can have SUGOI hugs…

Alphard will not tolerate Natsume’s attempt at harem takeover…

Impression

I thought that episode wrapped up many things nicely since it has been somewhat hinted at that Natsume and Alphard weren’t all that they seemed to be at the start. Natsume was the one that had phone calls with Liang Qi and seems to have been the Negotiator between the PRC, Japan, and the US in regards to the Borner and the Snakes. I have my doubts that Alphard started the Borner program though she did help it along. Some where along the way she became disillusioned and decided that the best way to end the nightmare was to have the program reach completion, but keep all the countermeasures to herself. That way she prevents any major power from pursuing another program (thus saving people from becoming new test subjects) and at the same time nullifies any strategic impact Borner weapons would have on the world since she would be contracted to deal with them by every government. I don’t think that Alphard is simply out to be the big bad, rather she seems to trying to redeem herself of the sins committed during the Borner program. After all she did free Hakko and expressed her dislike of Liang Qi using Borners as weapons. If nothing else at least we got a small hint of what her goals are even as Natsume’s become plain, and Alphard doesn’t seem to be a stock villain that might actually have some complex motivations that aren’t too far fetched.

While I did laugh at Santana last time I felt kind of bad for Cummings who tried to bring Laing Qi back through non-violent means, even if he’s been pelleted and trolled he did have guts to try and use dialogue to save Liang Qi. I did feel sorry for him when Liang Qi finally said “I love you” after he killed her out of mercy. I guess that in the end Liang was very dangerous and a master troll, but her attempt at winning Alphard proved to be her undoing. It wasn’t losing to Alphard that killed Liang but rather her intense jealousy that Canaan seemed to be the apple of Alphard’s eye. The fight between Alpard onee-sama and her imouto Liang Qi was done with 50% inferred action through their foot work, and 50% from Liang Qi spinning and slashing while Alphard was dodging. It wasn’t a bad fight in my book and it looked pretty fluid once Alphard started her finishing move and deftly disarmed Liang Qi. I am glad the Spec Ops guys didn’t embarrass themselves by shooting each other like Alphard’s goons, and it was all the better that they had Canaan use the knife so that we could see the difference between Alphard’s skills and Canaan’s.

Special mention mus be made of how PA Works did their home work, and while the pilots did not look nearly as well the MH-60L DAP and MH-60K (UH-60 variant of some sort) Black Hawks did look damn good and accurate at least with the MH-60L DAP. I am very impressed that they even knew that the MH-60L DAP even existed or that what the actual inventory of weapons systems the 160th Special Operations Aviation regiment is. Hakko’s act of necrophilia was weird, but in the end I can forgive the ZOMG ZOMBIE SECHS since her statement that the living decide to be more powerful than anticipated. It was disturbing to be sure, but she chose to die with the man she never had the chance to really love and that would not have been accomplished had she just run into the arms of Minoru after that. In the end I guess it was too much to hope that Mino-san would be Hakko’s Patrick and save her from death and despair. Still it did kind of feel like True Tears all over again with Mino-san being the Noe analog.

With the death of Liang Qi I expect Zyl to deliver an eloquent eulogy, while I expect Janette to dance on her grave and spit on Liang Qi’s memory. I suppose animekritik has a point that Liang Qi was exploited, but I think Liang was always set up to be the crazy one. Certainly her seiyuu Rei Tanaka had also voiced a similar character in Mai Otome as Tomoe, who was similarly as crazy as Liang Qi though she dressed a bit more conservatively, so it wasn’t that surprising. At least in my book Liang Qi had more personality than I would have expected, I expected the bullying and the use of force, but I was delightfully surprised by her cunning when she killed Santana. While I am sure that at some point Liang Qi was a sane and loyal follower of Alphard, once Canaan came into the picture her jealousy made its presence felt and in a bit to get Alphard’s attention either through seduction or being naughty Liang did get it for a while. It was a poor substitute for what I think Liang Qi wanted but by that point they already fallen out and at least Liang Qi relished the only physical interaction she had left with her onee-sama. I guess she got what was coming to her after she trolled Hakko so hard Hakko was still feeling it, certainly it is somewhat poetic that in her jealousy Liang became what she hated the most, but even then the white hair did not get her Alphard’s attention. It would have been interesting to see Liang Qi go from impressionable loli chasing her onee-sama to the lunatic that so utterly destroyed Hakko’s life in what I guess Shin will dub as a war on heterosexuality, which Liang Qi won posthumously as a result of Hakko’s suicidal grief.

Like True Tears before it a lot can be inferred from the characters eyes, and in this case it seems that Alphard had a rather regretful look and Liang Qi finally seemed to be at peace once she thought Canaan was dead. At any rate next week is a SUGOI train ride and hopefully at least we get to see how EPIC Alphard and Canaan’s first BIG FIGHT was.

What is Alphard’s word not good enough Santana?

After Alphard onee-sama saves Canaan and the gang they go off in search of the Factory. Maria and Yun Yun have some back seat fun with Knocked out Canaan. Upon waking up Canaan is told that Alphard’s pet name for her is despair. Maria voices protest but then goes on a tangent about how Canaan is a little chubby. Yun Yun jumps in and says that Canaan should grow some bigger oppai, in short Canaan should be more like Alphard. Canaan doesn’t want to admit that she needs physical improvements as Alphard likes her just the way she is.
Santana remembers how he and Hakko first met and how Liang Qi was strongly opposed to letting Hakko go. Alphard onee-sama having remembered love grants Hakko’s wish to be with Santana but while Alphard loves Hakko enough to let her go, Liang Qi sees Santana for the pervert that he is and prophesies that he will never hear sweet nothings from Hakko, her lonely sighs, or declarations of love and live to tell about it. Santana forgets Alphard’s kindness and blames everything on her Hakko having all but forgotten Alphard onee-sama also shares Santana’s flawed viewpoint.

Maria is getting SUGOI ideas now that Canaan is knocked out after her moment with Alphard…

Alphard tells Cummings how Hakko now disgusts her and she gets the same feeling from some dude who must be Santana but since Santana is weak sauce she never bothered to remember his name. Cummings thought that they were only here to stop Liang Qi but Alphard reminds him that there is a time for every thing. Liang Qi in her eagerness to see Alphard onee-sama again decides to get rid of the annoying people who would get in the way. To that end Liang Qi trolls Hakko by having Hakko kill Santana. It was a very clever plan by using a bait and switch after CIA agent Santana proved how much the CIA sucks and how inferior he is to Sam Fisher. Hakko decided to give a big speech but in doing so killed Santana which Liang Qi was quick to mock Hakko for it. Hakko repeatedly tells Santana that she loves him, at his request. Santana then dies though Liang Qi would have liked to see. Hakko then goes on a rampage but Mino-sana’s love puts a stop to it as he is an ancestor of the Immortal Colasour and Hakko’s bullets could not touch him. All the while Liang Qi was imagining how Alphard onee-sama was going to guide her while wearing nothing but her underwear which seems to be designer stuff to say the least. All in all Liang Qi was most delicious as she used her cunning to deal harsh blows to Hakko and Canaan.

Natsume did not forget about this reunion and lies through her teeth about wanting redemption when all she wants is money. Maria goes looking for SUGOI trouble and drags Yun Yun along to find Canaan Mk II mass production model. Natsume also finds them and proceeds to take them hostage.

So it seems that while Liang Qi is very much insane and in love with Alphard onee-sama, she is also very smart and cunning almost to the same degree as Glaurung. Despite wanting to see Liang Qi fight, I am very impressed that she used her cunning and guile to achieve her ends without resorting to direct force. Even if Hakko turned on her Liang made up a plan to get Hakko to do what she wanted. Only she did not factor in how invulnerable Mino-san is. Still it was a devastating blow to Hakko and Santana, even if it turned out to be a bit bittersweet in the end. I don’t really mind the unblooms becoming Zombies since they were technically dead or dying anyway. It seems that Canaan is quite famous and what world power wouldn’t want an army of Canaans? I suppose PRC corruption is just that bad when the CIA can do this on PRC territory. Natsume seems to be paid by an unknown party, though it could be that Natsume is playing two sides. I wonder if Hakko was Liang Qi’s double agent all along, since Hakko can’t speak without causing problems and certainly Natsume could be the one who told Liang Qi where Canaan was given how Natsume is loyal only to money which Liang Qi would have. It was a sad end for HakkoxSantana but now it is clear sailing for MinoruxHakko supposing that the Colasour magic will have time to make and impression. I really like how they are showing emotions with eyes and synthesia instead of narration since it conveys a lot more of the emotion, its’ also fun guessing on what red and yellow are, but in good time I think. The girl talk at the beginning was kind of funny since they basically told Canaan to be like Alphard.

Alphard seems to be a nice person given how Canaan says that Alphard is out to take down the Factory, and let Hakko and Santana go off despite it costing Alphard a borner. I think a lot will hinge on Alphard’s motives when we start deciding on whether or not this series met, failed, or exceeded it’s potential. I like how they used one single event to tie every one together for the most part and it seems that Natsume is out to secure Canaan Mk II mass production model since the current Canaan Mk II has problems following orders and isn’t the kind of unthinking killing machine that would have great utility. Hopefully Alphard will make her motives clear because right now she seems to be honest, much loved and adored by the female cast, and she hardly fits the mold of a big bad that is just out to kill everything for her own power. Given how this is the result of the CIA stabbing Alphard in the back this might just be a front from which Alphard is avenging herself on the CIA by ruining their plans. I suppose that Siam will be back in order to provide the link to Canaan and Alphard’s first fight that changed Alphard. If nothing else at least it seems that Canaan isn’t out to kill Alphard as much now. Next week we have some dudes with M-4s dropping in and Cummings looks like he is in trouble.

I have to say despite the lack of a real deep plot I am loving Canaan as a competent action series with glorious yuri undertones. I really like how they seem to relish in poking fun at Chekhov’s Gun in that they brandish them plenty this time and they use them, but they were only airsoft pistols. I some how doubt that Alphard is going to turn out to be pure evil but just as well since she might be a very complicated onee-sama with motivations that go beyond simply killing people and instilling fear in people. They do try to explain what happened to Yun Yun and Hakko’s hometown but it was certainly a stretch though perhaps things are so bad in the PRC that they even outsourced public health to the CDC.

So it turns out that Santana was once a CIA operative who was part of a mission to take advantage of an outbreak to do some human experiments. In a classic case of a CIA fumble they miscalculated and teamed up with Alphard. Still I suppose the did not have sanction to cut deals given the later purge of the CIA ranks and the open secret that the CIA is where the second rate guys go as the NSA has been doing all the hard work in total secrecy. Natsume is only trying to dig up dirt to blackmail the CIA for a huge payoff instead of taking on Sam Fisher and Third Echelon. Hakko will never forgive Santana but old Mino-san is using the Colasour magic to open up Hakko’s heart with funny faces.

Well if said steam buns had been stuffed on your person I think we can negotiate…

Yun Yun got a less than warm welcome from Hakko who seems mad about Yun Yun leaving her all alone. I was delighted at how Hakko was picking on Yun Yun on her lap, I can only assume that Hakko wanted to GET FRIENDLY with her old pal Yun Yun after a long absence. So Yun Yun and Hakko take them on a road trip only to be ambushed by a masked man. Canaan now without her powers fails at dispatching her attacker but the guy becomes An Hero after Hakko uses her voice of command. They bury the poor bastard and go on a tour of the town and we get a bit of loli-Yun Yun which ought to make Shin happy. Liang Qi gets impatient at Hakko for being slow and takes a gunship to kill Canaan. Fortunately Alphard came to the rescue of her harem despite her heart break and pain from last week.

Alphard onee-sama quickly riddles Liang Qi’s helo with MG rounds but as she does so Liang Qi gets scared and titillated at the thought of her beloved Alphard onee-sama wanting to kill her, rip her head off, and stir her insides. Cummings shows his love for Liang Qi and goes against Alphard’s stated intention to kill Liang Qi. Cummings shoots but Alphard read him like a book and had already swapped out his side arm for Liang Qi’s signature Airsoft pistol. Cummings thinks that he is a dead man but instead of killing him Alphard onee-sama trolls him hard and shoots him with a pellet instead.

It seems that Alphard is really a romantic at heart and hopes to see Cummings and her kawaii imouto Liang Qi build something with their love. After remembering love Alphard tells the truth Cummings no baka and that she could not kill her imouto Liang Qi. Liang Qi learns her lesson and tells her Alphard onee-sama that she will be waiting where the flowers of their love bloom. Despite restoring order in her harem Alphard has much work to do and has to dig Canaan out of the rubble that Liang Qi left her in.

No one escapes from the Road Trip!

Canaan gets deja-vu as Alphard digs her out of the rubble but not before having a bit of fun with Canaan and whisper a few sweet nothings to Canaan while Alphard steals her first kissu. Alphard doesn’t want to kill Canaan but seems to want Canaan to live and show that she found a new light. I am getting the sense that killing Siam was probably more about claiming Canaan Mk II than killing off Siam for cheating. Otherwise why bother leaving the other woman alive? Alphard has had plenty of chances to kill Canaan but again there is no proof that Alphard wants to do so. Give how there seem to be no good guys here I get the sense that Alphard isn’t the root of all evil as there is no proof that she created the factory and certainly she seems to have an apprehension about using borners as weapons. Besides it was the CIA that wanted to do it and the Snakes were brought into to help. Maybe in the end Alphard was no villain (but rather an unscrupulous mercenary perhaps?), certainly right now she seems more interested in girls and setting things right than promoting some fantastic agenda. Despite Alphard kicking Canaan for being stupid it seems more like tough love coming from an esteemed onee-sama who also bore the mantle of Canaan. Only Alphard gave it up to Canaan Mk II and seems content on being a star without equal. Alphard certainly seems to have taken on the role of Canaan’s new crush by being light brown to Canaan.

Alphard not only made inroads with Canaan, but it seems that Maria also has a SUGOI crush on Alphard as she claims that Alphard doesn’t seem like the type to do such things, for once I actually agree. I was delighted that Yun Yun was back and getting bullied by Hakko for thinking of suicide, as that is such a terrible idea, hopefully now that Yun Yun is set to meet Alphard formally things will turn around for Yun Yun. It seems that Hakko’s mission was to bring Canaan to Liang Qi, but because Santana drives like an old man they were late. I get the sense that perhaps Hakko was trolling Santana all along and making him feel bad as a girl as HAWT as Hakko would never fall for him and would choose that goofy Minoru instead. Liang Qi finally got Alphard’s message that she is tired of Liang Qi’s yandere antics, I hope their reunion goes well as Alphard seems to be the forgiving type as she once again forgave Cummings for pointing a gun at her.  (Zyl also highly approves of Alphard onee-sama forgiving Cummings and Liang Qi for being naughty) Speaking of Cummings, I think he has the best job in the world and the best boss, he is so lucky he got pelleted by Liang Qi and Alphard… Despite being the punching bag for Liang Qi and ALphard at least the guy has loyalty and is doing this all out of unrequited love for Liang Qi-sama. To be honest I could hardly blame him, and I am sure there are a good number of us who would gladly trade places.

I like how they tied everything together to that one operation that changed all their lives and hopefully we will get more insight into why Alphard killed Siam and what she expects of her successor, Canaan Mk II. I am quite taken with Alphard onee-sama she can wipe out a whole platoon on her own and yet here she is promoting love… I wonder what Canaan will do now that Alphard is light brown (the color of her crush) certainly it seems that Alphard is fighting Canaan’s hatred with love and succeeding, perhaps if Canaan did find a new light she would forsake revenge. Even if she didn’t I have my doubts that Canaan is ready to take on Alphard again. After that embarrassing shoot out with the masked man Canaan seems to have no natural talent for gun slinging and is utterly dependent on her synthesia. Well I do look forward to next weeks since PA Works has convinced me that they still have a coherent plot going. Hopefully we will get more of Happy and Loving Alphard next week as they are all in a tight space…

So this post is a bit late though it seems that they did get land lines in this hot and humid mud hole, so in any case after Alphard trolled the world Canaan and Maria try to runoff on a little yuri dayto, and while Alphard was most delighted to see that Canaan and Maria were getting FRIENDLY, but in the end Maria started using her lines and Alphard was left heart broken. Alphard sent Hakko to make sure that things between them did not go too well, but alas only a fully trained Yuri Knight with the Yuri as her ally could have prevailed. In the end Hakko was reduced to pelting Canaan with pebbles though now that Canaan has been blinded by Alphard’s radiance Canaan’s desire to kill has slackened. It also seems that Hakko will never forgive Santana for robbing her of her hopes and dreams of becoming an idol like Sheryl Nome and now no one will LISTEN TO HER SONG as she is now a Bene Gesserit witch. Alphard in her loneliness decides to troll the vice president and congratulates him for having the balls to try take her on.

Oh I see Canaan has learned a thing or two from Alphard onee-sama…

Cummings is at a loss of what Alphard is planning but it seems that our Lady of War is no believer of vicious cycle and actually grasps that capitalism is based on conquering and expanding new markets. Canaan can no longer see people’s colors though she thinks that blue reflects killer intent instead of BURNING PASSION certainly it was no accident that Alphard let her lovely Canaan live for if Alphard wanted her dead Alphard would have shot her like she shot Siam. Siam simply had to die because he was the reincarnation of Souma and Chikane would not let a lass like Canaan go hetero. In the end though since this is pretty much a sequel to Kannazuki no Miko where every one was reincarnated, Chikane’s sacrifice seems to have had some unintended consequences. Himeko is now Maria and has since started fancying herself as the priestess of the moon and so dumb struck that she has started hitting on Mako-chan, now Canaan, who is all too happy to oblige. Certainly underneath the gaze of the ancient stars they did reaffirm their love but Maria’s words were no her’s but Chikane’s. Since saving the world in a previous life Chikane has become mighty in the ways of Yuri and has successfully averted the return of Oorochi. Unfortunately as a result of Alphard overworking herself in trying to make all of her yuri pals happy in this life Maria is being most uncooperative in her delusions of being Chikane, as Maria thinks that she is the moon with Canaan as the sun. Upon feeling a great disturbance in the Yuri Alphard was on the verge of weeping hot tears of rage and sorrow at her predicament. Thankfully Alphard onee-sama held her composure and fired off a few rounds from her FN Five-Seven to calm her nerves…

You know Alphard was much better than Maria at this, I hope that after Canaan experiences it that she accepts no substitutes…

Kabitzin is at a loss to figure out what they Mighty Alphard is up to but I get the feeling that Alphard is trying to make money off this new multi-polar Cold War between the super powers and kill all the servants of Oorochi as an infamous mercenary and distant ancestor to Prince Ali. Clearly even after trolling the peace conference Alphard is starting to make underhanded deals to keep the war economy going until Old Snake puts an end to it. I suspect that while Siam taught her how to shoot Alphard completed her training under the tutelage of the Boss. This of course all speculation though it be pretty damn cool if even a bit of it were true. Nevertheless the admirers of the fair maidens of Canaan have busied themselves in other ways. Zyl has started calling my liege Alphie, which while cute and does reflect her dere dere side hardly speaks of Alphard onee-sama’s skill at arms. However I suppose that is she showed a bit more dere dere Liang Qi would start behaving, Maria would remember her, and Canaan will realize that Alphard likes her now as well as back then. Shin still holds out the vain hope that Canaan will become a guy and that he can have SUGOI intercourse (look in Kabitizn’s post for is NSFW comments with a lewdness level of OVER 9000) with Maria, Shin is showing the last throes of the hetero insurgency. Even Janette thinks the yuri is bursting at the seams but sadly she is not celebrating the yuri advancement of their friendship as they GET FRIENDLY. Alphard will claim her long lost Himeko and make her realize how deep and undying her love is, regardless of the discrimination that hetero otaku churn out. After all Alphard did almost wipe out the annoying people who were getting in the way between her and Himeko, she could easily do it again…

All is not yet lost despite Maria’s wayward ways, as Alphard had called in her reserve and now Yun Yun is embedded with Maria while Liang Qi heard the call and is flying to Alphard onee-sama with all haste. Nene has yet to be activated but when she is I guess her number one fan George (not his real name) the Taxi Driver shall come to the aid of Alphard despite Nene eventually declaring her love for Alphard as well. Whatever happens I eagerly anticipate every episode as Alphard has earned my undying admiration and loyalty unlike ghostlightning who beat a hasty retreat towards the pineapple salad instead of toughing it out. Oh and one last thing neither Santana or Mino-san can sing, may no one ever LISTEN TO THEIR SONG.

This weeks ep was pretty action heavy in the sense that Canaan was mowing down Alphard’s goons. Though artistic license was abused and those goons after killing off all the cops ended up blowing each other away in a massive team killing as Canaan used her bullet time to dodge everything. Even if it was pretty much bullshit it still looked kind of cool. Still they also went further and had a B-2 flying a combat mission in broad day light. At least they are mostly redeemed by having done their homework and had Spirit 2 sortie from Guam. Though unless they rolled out a new B-2 the thing doesn’t have four tail fins, but at least they slaves away to animate the mirror sheen on the helmets that reflected the flight controls. The Engrish from the pilot was pretty good though the AWACS chick laid on the accent pretty thick.

I am pleasantly surprised that they even brought up the 7th Fleet instead of just going with a general term. Lastly even if Alphard’s goons could not land a single hit on Canaan at least they demonstrated proper use of cover even as they weren’t shooting properly nor did they pimp out their assault rifles. Though again it seems that there is at least some one or a group of people on the team that does their homework. The attention to detail even went so far that the nameless goons who brought in Maria last time even made a second appearance as Alphard’s escort. It’s funny, they do so much right, but at the same time we really don’t know where the story is going.

So in any case Alphard decides to punish her imouto Liang Qi for getting out of line and aggravating Canaan. This breaks Liang Qi’s heart so much that they spent a lot of time animating the many faces of Liang Qi’s anguish. Cummimgs tries to smooth things over the usual way but his efforts are in vain as Liang Qi is in emotional turmoil and Alphard isn’t in the mood to tolerate any more of Liang Qi’s jealousy of Canaan. Maria gets even more uppity and for the first time Alphard shows some emotion as the thought of her former lover in a past life had forgotten all about her. Alphard then decides to kick Maria in her grief and heart break and tells the story of how a dirty mercenary named Siam had taken on two students that he both named Canaan. Alphard has since tried to leave it behind her but I suppose that Maria crying out for her old name was too painful to ignore. Even after all this time Alphard has been most patient with Liang Qi, Maria, and Canaan and despite the beatings and criticism not once has Alphard sealed their doom despite the opportunity presenting it self on numerous occasions. It is sad to see that Alphard’s kindness is not being returned in kind by either Liang Qi, Maria, or Canaan, Alphard onee-sama loves them very much but Liang Qi only repays her by beng spoiled, Maria pretends to forget everything about her, and Canaan is still bent on hating her after Alphard saved her from the pedo-bear Siam (as Alphard will have Canaan’s first kissu).

I can see why Alphard was furious that Maria had forgotten and now treated her as a stranger despite calling out her name.  Though since SUGOI girl has memory that is not so SUGOI maybe Kabitzin is right that maybe it was Alphard that was her savior. Still the drama was not limited to Alphard and Liang Qi’s yuri turmoil as it seems that in this time line that the CCP has cliques and that 00bama’s insistence the White House found Kissinger MkII though I was hoping that it was Dr. Henry Killinger with his magic murder bag. I am surprised that the US bothered to even call the Chinese Ambassador or the descendant of Hu Jintao, though it seems that the Shanghai clique is planning to user this fuck up to it’s advantage.

While Canaan and Natsume hacking NAVSTAR was utter bullshit I had fun imagining it as a great WoW Raid where Canaan got to level 80. In the end Alphard can enjoy watching Canaan and Maria struggle. Liang Qi is keen on proving how deep her love for Alphard is while Cummimgs is going to try and restore the yuri sisterhood of Alphard and Liang Qi. Hakko is probably going to use the voice of command as Minoru and Satana take a road trip and try to annoy the hell out of each other. Canaan gets in major trouble as after over exerting herself after her pregnancy by Alphard and starts suffering from migraines and loses her powers, which means that Liang Qi actually has a chance to actually doing some damage.

If so there is no need to leave this room…

So since Hinano raged once again about lasses who could not save themselves I thought it was time to write the manual to help young otome everywhere learn how to look out for themselves. Certainly these days males have increasingly taken the hippie path and cower in fear at the mere thought of being drafted, some go as far as draft dodging before a draft begins, so as the not all males are men, as men do no cower and have a sense of duty to some one or something other than their own personal safety. I suppose with this hippie path that male pissants increasingly take, that it is time to make up for the shortfall and make comrades out of those women who have no desire to be coddled or held back by male puss cakes. While there is much talk of love being the highest relationship between human beings nothing could be further from the truth as comrades are in every way superior to boyfriends or girlfriends (who are by all accounts prone to treachery). The bond between two comrades can only be forged in the fires of battle, sealed through mutual bloodshed, and is guarded by the souls of the dead. Perish the fool who would dare betray such a bond!

The first thing that every lass who wants to be bad ass needs to do is take a bit of advice from the Jackal who once stated that, “You can’t break a man the way you break a dog or a horse. You don’t have to be a damsel in distress to get BEST END, it’s less about finding some poncy prince than demonstrating your superiority long enough for other people to realize how great you are.

It is indeed a sad state of affairs that the damsel in distress has become so annoyingly common, but until Japanese women decide that enough is enough and they ditch their inferior men it seems that they will continue to fantasize about getting rescued. In truth such people will wait in vain and never know of the proper way of getting a partner. The problem is not only damsels in distress but also the low quality of boys that pass themselves off as men. It is sad that there are so many jack asses in anime and only a few like Patrick. While poor Patrick isn’t the smartest guy out there, only the AEU no Ace happened upon true love. His contemporaries however were very much a Japanese sort in that in order to remain manly they opted to make their women more oppressed to make up for their sissy girly man ways:  Saji downgraded Louise, Anew chose death rather than be with Lyle, and Haptism banished Soma to get his little play thing. If only more guys were like Patrick, who could respect the fact that marrying above them was a good thing, and admit that because they aren’t good at everything they need to find a woman who will make up for their short comings. At least God made it clear that Patrick got it right when poor Patrick got the BEST END and married the only woman of quality left in the series. Not that Kati got the short end of the deal either as she was in the enviable position of having a brave, if a bit dumb, man for a husband, whose loyalty is absolute and has no problem deferring to her judgment. Patrick also treats her like a queen and no matter what she did to him he always loves her and forgives just about everything. So in a sense after having spent most of her time on her illustrious career (Making Brigadier General is no small feat) she got BEST END too as her rival Sumeragi wasted her time chasing boys and got strapped with he stalker Billy. So at least there are instances of women finding guys without having to call out for rescue every five minutes, strangely though it happened in Gundam of all places instead of shoujo.

Never get caught in an alley without a pistol.

To be sure girls needing rescue is a persistent problem, in reality and in fiction, and the same solution comes up every time…weaponry. First thing every lass needs is a pistol, it’s the great equalizer and with proper training and enough range time, accuracy can make up for the small size of the round. Even a big man can be felled with a single accurate shot. However, I advise against simply settling for head shot (because that is just showing off), no instead use the three round rule, one in the head, and two in the heart. It is highly advisable that any aspiring bad ass lass should take a page from the reigning Queen of the Summer Season, Alphard onee-sama. Alphard has excellent choice in weaponry as she started out with the FN P-90 and eventually settled on the FN Five-Seven, every girl who wants to kick ass and take names should take note. Not only did Alphard go with a good reputable manufacturer but in choosing the 5.7×28mm rounds she selected a round with high muzzle velocity and low recoil, which is perfect for her desire to kill her target and have bad ass aim at the same time. The 5.7×28mm was also designed to punch through body armor so if Alphard ever has to fight an armored target at least she has a better chance than if she simply chose a 9mm. Given that the average girl who wants to be bad ass but not be built like a house, a .45 might give a bit too much recoil and Desert Eagle, while great for intimidation, is simply over kill and will probably destroy your accuracy if your intention is to get off as many rounds in the shortest span of time. Those who would do a woman harm often underestimate their targets if you have chosen your weapon well and have diligently gone to the tactical range as often as possible, you can make this their first and last mistake…

While understandably not all women who wish to be bad ass have access to legal weapons, but that is all the more reason to support one’s rights to bear arms. Even if an assailant were to have a weapon of his own so long as you have superior training and more lethal aim and killer intent you will be victorious as little boys often forget to take care of their weapons and usually have shit taste in guns. In any case lack of fire arms is no excuse for defeat, as tazers, pepper spray, Gerber knives, and your fists are usually legal unless your country just flat out sucks that much, in which case you ought to consider moving to a place where you can have an arsenal that can put the fear in any would be attacker.

While the FN Five-Seven is Alphard’s weapon of choice all those 5.7×28mm rounds she has work perfectly well with her FN P-90 when she needs to kill lots of poncy princes on horses.

I’ll be honest women have it hard, if you want to have that nice figure you are going to have to work your ass off in aerobics class. However looking gorgeous, delicious, and deculture, while being able to kick ass are not inherently incompatible. If you are of the opinion that you cannot look good and kick ass at the same time, you have self esteem issues and are fucking lazy and worthless to me and everyone else. In short such people are unwilling to be any comrade of mine and as a result will be dragged off to some loser’s bed in the event of war. No you can look good and kick losers into traffic by simply adding a few things to your daily workout. More likely than not you weren’t born pretty, you had to work for your waist line and as such you are probably more fit than most boys your age, in fact if you are a dancer you are by default more athletic than most people, only American Football players come anywhere near close in overall fitness. In line with this Alphard does have her own womanly charm, but despite her seemingly light build she has a lot of muscle mass behind it. Just like Bruce Lee it is not about how much brute force you can put out, but how good you are at economy of force. Like Alphard Bruce Lee was not built like a house, but he used his knowledge of human physiology to get the most out of every physical action. To be sure if you are capable of two finger push ups and the dreaded one inch punch you are a force to reckoned with, but more than likely you have yet to have such lethal skills, but nevertheless economy of force is important as one smart blow to the right weak point can have catastrophic effects on an opponent. Even in cases of disparity in strength redirection techniques like the ones you see in Aikido should suitably frustrate a single attacker until you can land the final blow. Always remember that Muhammad Ali did not simply say fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee for shits and giggles, even in boxing it’s about economy of force and not wasting your power attacks fruitlessly.

Just because Alphard was ambushed while wearing a dress didn’t mean that she was going to surrender meekly, that is why she is Damsel Dealing Death and not a Damsel in Distress.

Lastly there is the issue of what noble steed you should have. Certainly it seems that losers on horses are a dime a dozen, but fundamentally a horse is just as logistically troublesome as a tank. So instead of having a horse that is to be frank very fragile, it is far better to go with a tank or if technology allows mecha. At no point in time did a horse ever trump a big bad mecha, only in the case of Fuunsaiki, though admittedly the lose of being a horse was negated by being a horse that piloted a horse mecha. Nevertheless a guy on a horse with a lance is not going to do much against anything save for ill-disciplined infantry or unarmed people. Thus one should take up archery not only to look more like a lady, but to also be able to shoot out the horse from under the douche bag that calls himself a prince, that way you can possibly hear the clean snap of his neck as he tumbles to his doom While aesthetically archery seems much more refined and cultured do no skimp on sniper skills either as even a Barrett M82 is only deadly when it actually hits a target and no living animal on land can survive a direct hit with a .50 calibre round for very long. Even if death is not instantaneous you can enjoy watching the would be prince bleed out slowly as he calls for his mommy.

While Alphard has a petite build she has very little body fat and can thus deliver blows with more force than her small frame would suggest as one can see from the state of Canaan’s face.

While your martial prowess can far exceed that of any would be assailant never forget that such people will resort to dirty tricks to incapacitate you, so always have a battle buddy that you can count on when going out, keep positive control of your drink, and if that annoying guy asks one too many times break a few of his fingers as a warning. Remember you are the first line of defense in rescuing yourself, and to be sure if you will not do all you can to save yourself you probably aren’t worth saving and deserve to be a slave to some poncy prince. Never forget that a damsel in distress is probably a damsel deserving of death.

I apologize for the lateness but Liang Qi was just too delicious as she terrorized people with her Wii-HD. I am glad that we finally get to see Liang Qi run a big operation, though Alphard onee-sama did a lot of the planning. Ever since episode one Alphard’s big score was being planned out, the bunker, infecting the Japanese guy, starting the PMC that was contracted out to do security, etc. While the plot doesn’t seem to be all that ground breaking at least PA Works took the time to lay out small details of a big operation and then pull it all together with one hell of a BANG! It might not be ground breaking enough for Zyl, Kabitzin, Calawain, or ghostlightning, but at least it is a competent series that plays to it’s strengths, namely foe yay yuri, yuri subtext, and some of the best action to be had this season. I suppose that most action series will suffer more from conventions, but I still can’t help but admire how PA Works has managed to pull those conventions together and make some thing that is good, but not world changing. As a second outing I think it is understandable that PA Works would rather play conservatively than take a huge risk while proving their mettle as a new studio. In any case this was very much a return to the action side of things after the very comedic Yunyun centric ep we got last week.

It’s not often that you actually see something being planned for six eps, and in that sense there is almost something LOGH-esque about it. Sadly though, there wasn’t a whole episode devoted soley to one half of a meeting at any point. Still bit by bit we got a few hints of Alphard planning one of the most daring terror raids in anime without having to use an ass pull to do it. Even if it was over the top it was at least very plausible considering how even the US State Department contracts out security to PMCs instead of relying on Military Police. Given it is no secret that corruption is a problem within China it seemed believable that after having greased the right palms that DAEDELA could win the security contract for that conference. Certainly Alphard took her time in building up her PMC as an elaborate front, instead of simply going in with guns blazing, it is very much a sign of Alphard’s cunning and formidable abilites and further emphasizes the gulf of ability between her and Canaan. Speaking of which it seems that Alphard was once known as Canaan as well before the current Canaan took her name. I hope they go more into Alphard’s background as it seems she had quite the career in her younger days when Liang Qi was an adorable loli. I suppose they will get to what Siam (or however you spell his name) had intended to do since he was the man who taught both Canaan and Alphard, though given how Alphard was able to defeat him, it is quite clear that Alphard was one of his best students. Too bad Alphard had to kill him for reasons I hope will be clarified, but it seems probable that the current Canaan was probably meant to be the gunslinger Siam wanted to create.

Another point of interest was how Alphard and Maria had met before which should add more fuel to the rivalry between Canaan and Alphard. As a fan of Kannazuki no Miko I could not help but see their relationship as a continuation of that between Chikane and Himeko. The hair color certainly matches, Alphard is every bit as dangerous and refined as Chikane, if not more so (I suspect it was due to her humiliation and powerlessness as Chikane that as Alphard she focused much more on martial prowess…), and Maria is every bit as ditzy and camera loving as Himeko. Given that PA Works made the US President a rabid Trigun fan I can’t help but suspect that they also made a homage to the ED of Kannazuki no Miko when Maria fell down into Alphard’s arms. If Alphard is indeed Chikane reborn and Maria is Himeko reborn, then Mako-chan is Canaan (love of running and Himeko), and Liang Qi is Chikane’s head maid (hatred of Himeko and obsession with Chikane). Speaking of Trigun though I suppose that in the future we will have elected the backer of the up coming Trigun Movie which made for a very fun nerd moment. If the boys and girls at PA Works are fans of Trigun it certainly shows in thier lovingly animated action scenes and perhaps in their similar sense of humor. I don’t suppose that they are quite as rabid fans of Dune though certainly Hakko has the voice of command and we finally have proof that Noto-sama was paid to do more than make inaudible noises. If nothing else it seems Hakko is caught up in a love triangle of sorts…kimi wa dare to kisu wo suru indeed.

The major focus this time still lay primarily with Liang Qi as we got a little bit more of her story as a loli that fell in love with Alphard onee-sama as she turned her small little group into the terror of nations and the bane of Azadistan. Sadly even while Liang Qi professed her undying love for Alphard, Alphard would prefer to have a kawaii imouto who didn’t have such uncontrollable hate. Certainly Liang Qi has major issues as the beating of Maria indicated, but I am sure that deep down Alphard does care for Liang Qi in some way as she did keep Liang Qi around ever since Liang Qi was loli. Even if Liang Qi is a horrible person I could not help but enjoy her brand of brutality as she used her Wii-HD to rain death and doom to the conference and even had her Mii troll the hostages and the security forces. There was very much an almost Full Metal Jacket-esque feel to it as Liang Qi was clearly paying homage to that crazy door gunner with 157 certified kills that Joker ran into. If nothing else Liang Qi was pretty much what i imagined her to be, a broken onee-sama loving killer, I am not sure if they will try to redeem her but you have to wonder how Liang Qi went from an impressionable loli to crazed killer. Certainly Alphard doesn’t seem to share the same streak of insanity. Heck when Alphard was loli she was the heir to an armed group on the verge of extinction, certainly it was not insane brutality that defined the most infamous terrorist of her day. Instead Alphard turned out as a cold calculating woman to be rightfully feared.

I also liked how the guys and gals at PA Works even went so far as drawing out specific guns for Alphard, her mooks, and the poor cops who got shot to pieces. At the every least even if the cops got rolled over it wasn’t because they couldn’t hit anything but were taken completely by surprise as not one of them suspected the PMC guys as the terrorists. I can’t help but feel sorry for that squad of cops that figured out that Liang Qi was in the control room and then got out flanked by Alphard. They did everything right in that they took cover and took shots from the least exposed positions. It was sad that no one seemed to be aiming, but at close quarters you don’t really have to look down the sight anyway, and Alphard’s goons were trying to maximize the surprise factor by shooting the quickest way possible, so it was understandable. I think it was no accident that the Chinese cops all had bull-up assualt rifes as the current PRC service rifle is bull-pup design, i for one am glad that PA Works took the time to do their homework instead of going the cheaper route and give everyone the same poorly animated assault rifle.

Well next time it seems that someone is going to die, I hope it’s not Liang Qi as I really want to see her have a real knock out drawn out fight with Canaan. Given that Liang Qi doesn’t have her sword there is hope for her yet to wield it properly.

Although she makes it look easy it took many years for Alphard to become the dignified lady that she is today, this is the story of how I think it happened…

So Uncle Sam has been shipping me in and out of Virginia for the past month and will do so again soon enough… Still I think that at this point we know a few things, Alphard onee-sama is HAWT (which Kabitzin and Zyl can attest to), the action is fairly solid, and the synopsis is off. While my good comrade Calawain has been less than enthused by the yuri goodness I think I know why. Certainly while Canaan is based off some source material, I think that after this we can get a sense of what kind of game PA Works plays. Those who remember the good times and for the poor Noe supporters like me, the bittersweet times, of way back when True Tears thundered out from almost nowhere to blow us all away will have an easier time understanding. Certainly Canaan is not a strict adaptation of 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de, in fact I suspect that much like True Tears PA Works is playing its own game in not going for a strict adaptation and gleefully abuses the term “loose adaptation.” Just like True Tears the anime had nothing in common with True Tears the game, Canaan will probably have little, if anything, in common with 428: Fūsasareta Shibuya de. Nevertheless having been impressed by True Tears and quite impressed with the five episodes that they have released so far I think it’s fair to say no one outside of PA Works will know how it will progress and that we probably should enjoy the ride no matter where it takes us.

In a way I suppose that this nightmare scenario for Tamaki came true.

Still while my good comrade Calawain was less than impressed by Round 2 (hoping for a flashback of Round 1 when Canaan was more powerful) I think there are a few good reasons why Canaan lost. She spent early morning pulling a bullet out of her left arm (which explains her less than 100% attempt to grab Alphard’s toned ass), just got dumped by Maria, and had to run all the way there while Alphard traveled in style with Liang Qi. Also let’s not forget how the only way to counter hatred is with love, which is precisely what Alphard did. Thus Alphard’s victory in Round 2 was assured as the most devastating part of her attack was not when she choked Canaan into submission but when Alphard gave Canaan some lurvin. After all after Alphard indicated that she wanted to play with Canaan a little more Canaan ran for the door instead of her gun.

It is clear to me now that Alphard is just an alias that Haruhi Fujioka uses as the largest shareholder of a PMC and most badass lass of this season and possibly this year. I knew there was a correlation once I heard Alphard speak; clearly she extracted much from the other members of the host club, all of whom I assume to be dead or in hiding. How else could Haruhi “Alphard” Fujioka amass such a formidable military machine? I tell you her years spent as a host were not in vain and that she won over many fangirls who invested their money with her. Being a formidable opponent and the girl to beat it is clear that she learned CQC from her old sempais Hani and Mori, as for learning how to run a business from Kouya. Along with her number one fan, Renge “Liang Qi” Houshakuji, Alphard instituted a hostile take over of Nekozawa’s family business. The history of Renge and Nekozawa is indeed long and starting with the EVIL BEAM to the current airsoft gun Liang Qi trained him daily and forced him to take the name Cummings. Alphard also started her King Slaying days at Ouran as well, for during her days as Haruhi Fujioka she slew the King of the Host Club. Thus it is easy to see why Alphard is the Prince of Kurdistan and has successfully fought off the forces of the hated Azadistan. She also laid forth her greatest treatise “On Villany” that her future heir Prince Ali would use in his bid to rebuild Kurdistan after it was betrayed by Jihad-kun.

She’s a lady…

I was most impressed at how Alphard was able to become the queen of the ball and certainly her father, Ranka, has taught her well and the results are hard to dismiss. Her years of serving rich women also made her rich, powerful, charismatic, and she almost became one with the Yuri. Even her first team was first identified during her days at Ouran as she even converted the most feared Yakuza to her cause. Even in her youth Haruhi “Alphard” Fujioka was stealing the hearts and kisses of women all around her. Such was the glory that was Alphard in her youth that the greatest fangirl of the age swore eternal fealty and undying love to her.

Tl;dr Long Live Alphard!

Such loyalty is sadly lacking these days…

When Liang Qi was young she was much less violent, but no less devoted…or borderline crazy.

She has used many aliases over her career…

Her skills have markedly improved…

…as she did look a bit scruffy in her youth.

And it’s all thanks to her dear old dad…

I assume it was because of Alphard’s overwhelming presence…

Even back then Alphard was charismatic as ever…so much so that she turned straight girls onto the yuri path…

Nice to see that Alphard has taken a liking to physical conditioning…

Back then her muscle mass was nowhere near as formidable as it is now.

With those legs I bet she can break a lesser man in half over her knee.

Despite the animosity Canaan felt, in the end she could not help but cop a feel.

Alphard has gotten this seduction thing down to an art…

Not that she ever needed to improve that much…

I suppose that with age comes a less brazen attitude…

Alphard believes that a happy Canaan free of hate is a lovely Canaan.

At this point I was hoping for something like…

Still I suppose Alphard could have tried a little bit harder to draw heart with her bullets…

She has been playing with her imouto for a long time…

In her youth she also delighted in screwing with the minds of Yakuza…

I suppose if this keeps up then Alphard will go down as the Queen of the Summer season.

Next time I hope Canaan will be less afraid of Alphard stealing her first kiss.

Thankfully the beggar who was faking it wasn’t the end of the parade of laughs, neither was Canaan’s morning sickness after her unforgettable night with Alphard onee-sama…

Yeah this one is sadly late again, but between my brother’s WoW addiction, C Schools, and routing up a memo for international travel I have been over worked though thankfully not terribly underpaid for it all. So after last weeks HAWT Alphard on Canaan action (so HAWT that Canaan had to get over a bit of morning sickness afterwards…) it was time for Super Kanban Musume Yunyun to get her own ep. As characters go I like Yunyun more than Maria, not in the least part because she has a fang which automatically gets her points with THAT blog. After all a fang is a mark of favor from the Patron Goddess of THAT, who has sadly been absent from SHnY as of late… In any case it was more focused on comedy as Yunyun managed to feed Maria fish from a dirty and polluted Yangtze which has hardly improved despite the Green Policies of successive commie governments. The quality of Yunyun’s education speaks for itself, as she has no idea what DNA is…

I take it was casual Friday at the office….

Finally a Lady who doesn’t totally fail at cooking and gunslinging! I can’t wait to see how Alphard’s pot roast will turn out.

In any case it seems that Liang Qi has the All Seeing Eye and can track almost everyone and is well aware of Santana and his habits. It seems that Hakkoo was one of Liang Qi’s underlings or perhaps is a sleeper agent who infiltrated her way into Santana’s heart. In any case it seems that Yun Yun and Hakkoo have some history together I assume it is yuri-ific as Hakkoo can communicate with Yun Yun at an unprecedented level as Santana is reduced to paltry magic tricks and Mino-san has to use pastries. Though in the case of Mino I guess the great ancestor of Patrick “the Lucky” Colassour has an under developed musk as Hakkoo isn’t that taken away by him. So poor Yun Yun has to infect some Japanese secretary in order to get more pills and watch Liang Qi-sama bathe. Sadly because Yunyun is only capable of seducing guys like Shin, her superb attempt at spiking the guys drink was all for naught as Hakkoo got all the attention. At least though I think think their very special friendship wins out in the end as Hakkoo did try to reassure Yunyun that size isn’t everything. If nothing else Hakkoo also thinks lovingly of Yunyun while Liang Qi-sama is a cold-hearted mistress.

Yunyun fumbling with a gun was funny. It was good that Maria finally decided to do something and do a yuri rescue of Yunyun who delightfully commented on the situation. Eventually though Yunyun takes a page from Hamas, but ultimately fails for needing a lighter. Still I am surprised Yunyun had 150 sticks of TNT lying around, but even if she failed in killing Canaan she did get to cop a feel. Maria has started her own little yuri harem though at the moment it might as well be the DFC club. Poor Mino gets a bad rap for noticing Yunyun’s ass and ruins Yunyun for marriage in the process. Of all the borners I think Yunyun got the worst deal as she got two appendixes which makes for crap super powers. I am not sure if Yunyun can walk away from the HAWTNESS that is Liang Qi for Maria, but time will tell…

The action was short and almost non existent save for Canaan dodging Yunyun in her Hamas cosplay. I don’t think anyone outside of PA Works has any idea how events will unfold, or what kind of series this will be. However, what action there has been is solid, and at the very least PA Works proved how they can be funny as all hell. I admit freely that there were plenty of laughs to be had as Yunyun is a funny girl. I hope to get a little more of this special friendship between Hakkoo and Yunyun in the future, it would have been five kinds of win if they did a bro-fist for good measure. Liang Qi got a little more development as we at least get to see her scheming in real time. She even sent Cummings to complete the mission after Yunyun failed so at least Laing Qi-sama is a thorough imouto. Next time it seems that Cummings gets hit wit larger airsoft pellets, Liang Qi gets a Vocaloid of herself, and Alphard works her magic on Maria… Like Kabitzin I am hoping that they take the love heals all theme to the MAX and have yuri lurvin be the cure.

All in all I love this series to pieces even if there seems to be a very loose adaptation of the source material. It happened with True Tears so I wager it will happen again.

I’m covering for Crusader again, and I was supposed to do this much earlier in the week, but it ran into my preparations for the Bar Exam. My apologies. Well anyways, this show is getting a triple set of movies, which is hilarious for a 13 episode show. 13 episodes is somewhere between 4 and 4 and a half hours, so basically it’s just the TV series packaged into movies. How silly.

Cry me a river sugoi girl, she saved your life (multiple times). Ungrateful wench! At least her little emo fit didn’t last for multiple episodes. She is one of the primary reasons I’m having trouble fully enjoying this show. She apparently exists to show that Canaan isn’t a monster, but that she has humanity left in her, and that she’s just a normal girl inside. However, instead of subtle suggestions and stories across several episodes, we get repeatedly bludgeoned with this fact by way of this maddening girl.

Blushing?! Tsundere?! Damn Nasu!

THE BEST CHARACTER IN THE SHOW. Man, we need a separate series just for this badass man where he solves the problems of passengers he picks up through badassery and pop idol driving. The only movie I’ve seen totally focused on a taxi driver was a pretty awesome movie. A tale of murder, 12 year old prostitutes, politics, and the famous line “You talkin’ to me? Then who the hell else are you talkin’ to? You talkin’ to me? Well I’m the only one here. Who the fuck do you think you’re talking to?”

Hoho. There are way too many characters in this show for me to keep up with them all at this point, but am I wrong in possibly connecting this to Canaan’s village? The cosplay fetishist fellow certainly looks old enough. But unfortunately I’m finding it more and more difficult to care about the backstories for fear that they will be unpleasantly predictable and cliche.

Sigh, what is she, a cheap Bond villain? Austin Powers the anime? When I heard Canaan and Alphard were going to fight it out I was looking forward to a knock-down, drag out fight between two sexy ladies. But in the end it was rather anticlamactic, and frankly, lame. We ended up getting a one-sided fight with too much talking in it and a cheesy ending. Boo.

I really want to uninhibitedly love this show, but I can’t seem to do it. I should be excited over all of the yuri subtext that Crusader and I usually eat up, but the rest of the show makes it rather difficult. What started out as an intriguing idea has come across as less than unique, feeling like somewhere I’ve seen this all before. Nasu’s worldview is interesting, but he struggles at times to make each one distinguished. I don’t really want to be pandered to in this type of show.

What a silly episode it was this week, though I suppose that Cosplay Santana will have a special place in the collective memories of those who saw and were overawed… Surely such an odd establishment is a rarity in this season. I suppose Hakko really is a lost little kitten, and I am sure that Mino is in a somewhat envious position. While old man badass and his younger brother were not long for the world at least we know now that they were UA tested and got to become BROKEN as a result, I think that similar result could have been achieved if they were introduced to Mako-cakes but there is more than one way to skin a cat. Speaking of cats it seems Hakko has taken a liking to Mino and revealed to him her HOPES AND DREAMS, certainly that came out of nowhere, but I doubt there are many who would complain.

The waitress seems to for now be some sort of spy as Canaan brow beat Mino into bank rolling their yuri dayto, which was to be their last as Maria showed off the color of rejection. What action there was remained fairly solid though much more time was spent at Cosplay Santana than shooting of little jihad-kuns. Nevertheless this is wonderful news as now Alphard onee-sama is still in Canaan’s heart (this bodes well for my OTP) as they share a mark of fate as they have matching tattoos. Sadly while it seems that Alphard has been loyal, and prevented her star struck imouto Liang Qi from getting into a fight with Canaan, the same cannot be said for Canaan. It was unfortunate that Canaan decided to cheat on Alphard with Maria who is shallow and super boring though I suspect that after Alphard grows an ahoge that Canaan will feel the love again. At least Alphard had the foresight to provide Laing Qi with ample airsoft ammunition. Next time though the lovely Alphard and her adoring imouto are going to a high class party, from what we have seen I think Alphard looks as lovely in a dress as she does with a gun. Still what did Maria think Canaan used her gun for? This isn’t exactly Canaan’s first use of deadly force…

If I hear that blonde bimbo say “sugoi!” one more time I’ll fucking kill someone. I found her somewhat annoying previously, but man this episode sent it over the top. She has such a grating voice, and is way too happy for a dark show like this. I hope Canaan ignores her forever, although I know that won’t be the case.

For all that supposed planning and an attempt to get revenge, the little kid’s plan fell pretty flat on its face. All he got out of it was gunshots to the belly, and a swift death. I cheered partly because I got tired of hearing Junko Minagawa’s voice. Here’s hoping we get more action and less dates with irritating females next week. I’d certainly like to see Alphard and Canaan go at it, but they would probably save something that awesome for much later in the series for a greater impact.
