First Impressions: Darker Than Black

dtb1-01
I want no part of Hobo Hei, where’s the collarbones?

The highly anticipated sequel to a widely popular dark action show with dead people all over the place. So, how do you follow-up an adrenaline-filled finish to season one? Can you top the emotion and the suspense? The choice was clear, let’s open with Japanese high school in Russia. Can I get an “OH YEAH!”

dtb-02

First off, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a blonde Russian. Perhaps the writers were confusing Russians with their Scandinavian cousins to the west. Or perhaps they are just ignorant. I’ve come down with a case of foot-in-mouth disease. See the next sentence. Although, coming from an American such as myself it may be a bit bold considering the reputation of Hollywood. However, I point out their stupidities as well. Second, somehow I don’t see Russian high school boys acting like blushing girly Japanese guys when asking a chick out. And for fucks sake, isn’t this show supposed to be about people getting electrocuted?

dtb-03

Japanese high school in Russia, complete with cleaning duty. Can’t say I know anything about the Russian school system but I would hope they have janitors there. Think of the economic recovery that could be had in Japan if they didn’t have high schoolers cleaning their schools. Job creation people!

dtb-04
Now that’s more like it

dtb-05

Hoho even better. Finally we got some combat, and what a brutal way to go Teleport-kun. April’s ability was rather underwhelming on its own in season 1, and was only good in conjunction with November 11’s ice ice baby. The teleporting ability was pretty nifty until it was defeated by big drops of water.

dtb-06

Weak start to the episode with high school crap (which is appropriate in other shows but felt really out of place here), but by the end they were piling up the body count just like the good ol’ days. They even shot a cat and a squirrel, pretty rough stuff. Dunno if April is actually dead, people have come back in this show before, but a bodybag is pretty solid evidence, especially after getting cooked by Hei. And where’s my Yin?

“First off, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a blonde Russian”

LOL, maybe that’s not her original hair color…
Also, after blue and green hair in anime, this is nothing :D

Well, as it was said earlier – we have plenty blonde girls here in Russia, and as for the school – it was the best moment out of all, becuase they really did a very good job creating the right image(well, except cleaning duties.). They even shown “putting chairs upside down on the desk” – this was hilarious

“Japanese high school in Russia” … LOL YEAH

Turned out to be an impressive first episode after the scene where Suou and Shion first chat in Shion’s room.

Ah, well then perhaps I’m even guilty of stereotyping in my own way, too eager to jump all over the writers. However, I’ll still stand by the fact that 95% of the time in anime white foreigner=blonde.

A note on Russian schools and dating: while one commonly associates Russia with vodka and manliness, Russian high schoolers (though not universally) do blush from time to time and especially when dealing with girls. Kudos to writers for not taking the love letter route; though those also exist in Russia to some extent.

Cleaning duty is also typical of Russian schools and at the end of a term pupils are generally forced to scrub the classrooms one their knees; on their knees because otherwise it’s difficult to erase from walls (near the floor) the black marks from shoes. I haven’t been to Vladivostok, but if anything, its schools are probably in worse condition than the ones I’m familiar with.

A note of Russian blondes: there are plenty of blonde people in Russia though they are outnumbered by the darker hair colours.

Now if you really want to pick on the DtB you should go for the sign in front of the bar and books in the bookshop. Such sign would never have “Пить” (verb for “to drink”) written on it, nor would a bartender wear an apron with that word. As for the book titles, some of them don’t make sense, and most have severe typos.

On a separate note, this is the first anime I’ve seen to use FSB instead of KGB. Well done!

Thanks for that info, it seems it’s been well established I don’t know what I’m talking about when it comes to Russian youngins as well. My knowledge is based off of culture, assumptions, and a couple of high school friends of mine that went to grade school over there, but that’s about it. Out of curiosity, do they have a longer school year than the 9 months in the States?

Hey, at least I still know a few things about Russian history and politics. Yeah, I’ve seen Alexander Nevsky all the way through alright, speaking of ice ice baby.

Poor guy who got “dumped” immediately after a few days since his girlfriend became a Contractor.

Calawain: It’s 9 month as well which – I think – has to do with common religious origin of European (and US by extension) educational system. If I recall correctly, school were mostly religious and to enable people to attend terms were tied to agricultural seasons. Religion being the same, similar terms spread. Mind you, unlike most of the world, ex-USSR countries usually have 6-day school week, not 5. That sounded like Wiki, did it? I do apologise for that.

Oh, and Alexander Nevsky is ludicrously politicised piece of cinema full of exaggerations; though that doesn’t change the fact that Teutonic Order lost. Talk about a warm Russian welcome.

Hah, I saw the movie as an undergrad in my early Russian imperial history course. Of course we had a discussion on the not so subtle morphing of the Teutons into 20th century Nazis, but I usually find period pieces extremely fascinating. I majored in political science and history, and the dreamer in me always wants to live in those times, time machine style. So a movie is at least partway there, even if it was made primarily for propaganda in this case.

Plus it had such great sound and dialogue in the climactic battle, it’s not often that young folks such as myself can become that absorbed in a black and white film.

Now the FSB and the Japanese MIAC’s gonna be involved. Weird that the latter’s an internal minstry/department.

Ich think red haired Russians are more seldom than blond ones ^^.
And it depends on the area right? The Russian – Germans in Germany are mostly blond (the reason is obvious).
And complete yellow eyes … . There do exists (human) eyes with a yellow corona around the pupil ^^.

There exists a joke about an American agent secretly sent to Russia.
He landed near a large town and walks into the city. At once he is arrested and put into jail for being a spy. In his interrogation he tries to convince them of him being a 100% Russian.
First, he gives them a complete review of Dostojewskis novels. The officer is happy, but doesn`t free the agent. Then the American dances the dance of the Cossacks and every police officer around is so moved and dances with him. The agent isn`t released.
As his last try, the agent sings an old Russian song, that let everybody cries.
But the agent isn` t released.
At the end, the agent breaks and anounces: “Ok I am an American spy. But – please – tell me: where did I behave wrong?”
“Your Russian language is perfect and you have a deep Russian soul. You can dance our dance like a young god. Indeed you would be a perfect Russian.
But we do not have Blacks in Russia!”

The original joke is a bit longer but … that`s what I was thinking when she said ” I am from the MI6″ Hu really? Surprise Surprise…

After reading the coment from Deckard I think BONES is trying to pay attention to the foreigns details ,I remember in the first series how the map always showed diferent scales for the Heavens Gate, sometimes it englobed Paraguay and Bolivia and Brazil and sometimes only Brazil (there was also times when the city where i live was outside and inside the gate xD) but now they are referring as if it happened in Brazil not generically in south america.
