Best line of the episode…
I am just loving that OP they got going makes me want to punch something, though this time it seems like this is the real episode 1 anyway so the awesomeness level wasn’t firing on all cylinders this time, to be fair it seems that the last episode was just a taste of what it is to come. On that note I have high hopes for this one to be the mecha show of the season no matter the hubbub over Asura Cry’in (though I will be following up on that in due time I suppose) that Impz was raising. Still this is one hot blooded manly show as there is blood aplenty and even Grandpa Kabuto has a big slab of meat for breakfast. Still the old man service was as the detective said rather comically disgusting, still with a battle scar like that Grandpa Kabuto is by default more manly than most so called men this season. I just love the line where he said the Aphrodai A was useless, because it is a poor comparison to Mazinger Z, mostly due to the lack of BIG BANG PUNCH. I wonder if Dark Kouji is going to show up more often, it’d be great if Dark Kouji netted himself the title of most Dangerous Bi-polar Dude of the Year. Lastly but certainly not least I thought it was hilarious that the Ashura Corps brought swords to a gun fight. I am at a loss for words to convey how awesome this show is, but I just love it to pieces, it’s so hot blooded.

this episode rocked, actually. yup, what’s clear now is that we’ll be piecing together the first episode as we go through to the show. and the last episode is going to be something amazing. Aphrodai is cool no matter what!! Any clue as to how many episodes this is gonna be? They’re gonna need a bunch to get it done right.
You should try playing a SRW game(if you haven’t already before) Aphrodai A is only good for healing andnot for fighting, and don’t even get me strated on Boss Borot
at the beginning i never even considered watching this but after two episodes i’m hooked. Haven’t felt so hot blooded since Gurren Lagann
26 episodes of awesomeness. I’m so pumped. I was on the tail end of the Rocket Punch Generation (I don’t know if my parents were even dating in 1974), but I did see this as a kid and the Rocket Punch is a beloved robot attack.
Crusader this Mazinger Z is so much more awesome than the original, because Imagawa’s directing and you need to get yourself some Giant Robo OVA quick (only 7 eps!) A lot of the character presentation style (especially the side characters), and the exposition with their ridiculous entrances are all Imagawa imo.
Aphrodai A is useless, always has, always will be. She’s good for being ripped apart fanservice style. Because this is a Go Nagai tradition and women are exploited – but at the same time the whole thing, THE WHOLE THING will somehow feel remarkably chaste, god knows how.
Grandpa getting the birdy killed was LOLWTF. I should feel bad about it but I guffawed.

@ animekritik: I’ve heard speculation that the first episode may never happen, as with the opening scene of TTGL. It’s only speculation though.

It’s also worth noting the last line the narrator said was a reference to the lyrics of the original Mazinger Z theme song. Looking forward to how it will kick-ass against Garuda K7 and Dablas M2.

Still, a nice retelling of the first episode of the classic Mazinger except, y’know, Grandpa Kabuto has more screen time.
Mmm, no Mazinkaiser? I’m guessing we won’t see the super prototype as the episode that went before this one showed… the beginning of Great Mazinger.
For something that’s labelled “useless” it did perfom fairly decently this episode. In a support role, yes, but that’s still something.
I don’t expect to see Big Bang Punch anytime soon, even after next week, for somewhat obvious reasons.
@IKnight: I’m thinking the actual episode(s) won’t be 100% identical, but I do think there will be more of a resemblance than in TTGL. Still, their role is rather similar from what we can tell so far.

Compared to something that turns into a giant glowing BIG BANG GODFIST OF SHEER HOT-BLOODED EPIC MANLY AWESOME, yeah, Aphrodai A is useless.
Speaking of which, “Aphrodai A” is the romanization that they’ve been using for her most recent die cast toys, so I guess it’s their new official romanization.
I believe that at the moment, the only question on all our minds is “where the heck is the subtitled version Shin Mazinger 03?”
Definately… 3 groups are doing this, with Gattai being the best so far from what I’ve seen, yet none have done ep 3, with Gattai being the only group having done ep 2 D:

Episode 3 is out, looks like Gattai took their time since they were using a hybrid raw with bits from the extended online Bandai Channel version.
@d3v: Indeed, while the quality of the animation is somewhat compromised, the flow of the narrative is much, much better. Also, the third episode brings a sort of a Watchmen/Sin City feel to it in a good way.
And I’m going GAR for Baron Ashura.
Also not to forget, the Shin Mazinger manga is also out.
