Force Recon (First Impressions): Shin Mazinger Z – BOW BEFORE YOUR NEW GOD

I accept Zeus/Mazinger Z as my personal savior.

I confess I am utterly lost about what the hell was going on save WE MUST DEFEAT DR. HELL despite watching 3 times. Other than that it seems to have been a huge fan wank for those old enough to remember, but sadly I was unable to fangasm as much as I would have liked. Still for an intro ep it was fukken AWESOME with 20 plus varieties of win. If super robot is not your thing I advise you stay clear otherwise I hereby declare that the we have a new Patron God for Spring 2009, his name is Zeus but you may call him Mazinger Z!

Can’t you see the resemblance?

Dr. Hell is way tougher than a mere Innovado.

Now that…

is a proper Super Attack.

Only the truly badass ride Lions into battle.

YESSSS TWIN DRILLS MOTHER FUCKERS!

The OG Geek Squad.

He’s a Count because he has a monocle.

How do they stack up against the Demon Armies of Zaibach?

I always wanted a Submarine Fortress.

Now that is how you customize mecha.

All Hail Dr. Hell!

Oh sounds like fun…

He/she came.

Look who’s talking…

I so need Dual Gatling Guns…

In the old days we used our manly fists to deliver justice.

Ah yes this is what I miss most, non-bishie ugly looking men ready to kick ass WHILE SMOKING A CIGAR!

I think you dropped this…

COOL this guy has best set of legs I have ever seen.

That’s right no FEAR in this one oh how I lament the cowardice of today’s mecha pilots.

Suck on that Renge.

And he’s ready to rebuild his temple.

Now that is a name.

Now that is the face of a true God of Mecha.

Taken out of context this sounds so wrong…

FUCK YEAH GIRL TWINS!

Can’t say I blame the guy I would have done the same thing…

Let me guess you’re looking for Lupin…

I approve of her twin tails.

Unlike today there was no bitching about using chemical warfare.

Who needs morality when you have something…special.

I told you not to move…

This Blade cuts real close…

Oh yeah we can always use more of those.

Out of the way peck!

LETS!

These guys have balls.

No sir he’s on the level…

We’ll have none of that nakkid shit here.

    Holy Jesus, Shinsen’s subs are even worse than I imagined. “All-knowing and all-powerful.” “Agent of the nation”

    Oh god.

    but in reality I am Z Mazinger? Really? Nothing at all about in the form you see there? Urgh, I’m feeling somewhat ill.

    There’s no school like the old school… Oppai missiles, anyone?

  5. JDMFLCL April 10th, 2009 12:28 am

    what mecha should be about

    the absurd

  6. Ressy April 10th, 2009 12:37 am

    Complete, insane, absurdity.
    And yet, somehow so full of win.

    don’t worry Crusader you’re not the only one who is confused watching this episode… but even though i never watched the original Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger or even the Mazinger Kaizer series (only the oav on Enkoku Daishogun[sp?]) i am pretty sure the ‘Z Mazinger’ angle has never been used. A look at wiki at least confirmed the producers are not pulling unmentionable things out of their ass’s. For a moment there i thought it was just a redesign on God Mazinger

    as for the episode itself… has any other anime done a recap episode on the first airing? because seriously this looks like a recap episode

  8. Kaioshin Sama April 10th, 2009 1:42 am

    Zeus is Z Mazinger, Mazinger Z is Mazinger Z. Confused? Well……

  9. IKnight April 10th, 2009 2:18 am

    Fork yes, if you’ll excuse my cutlery. I think there were some Go Nagai character cameos and other stuff in there that even a long-term Mazinger fan wouldn’t understand, but it’s hard to confirm that: long-term, English-speaking fans are a bit thin on the ground.

    Big Bang Punch needed more GALACTICAL POWERZ

    LOL, is like time travel to the origins of super robots. I only miss the breast missiles, in especial the huge breast missiles for flying Mazinger.

    Damn, one thing I realize is I better stop watching this streamed. The quality of those screencaps is amazing compared to what i watched. this show is probably going to absolutely kick ass..

    I like the episode. Not just because of the action scenes and cool posing, but because it’s something of an intentional puzzle that the viewer will only be able to fully solve in the coming weeks and months. The confusion is natural, but it’s more than that too.

    I’d like to know though…does Crusader have previous knowledge of Mazinger Z or not?

    Btw, Shinsen has a lot poor editing choices which may even be wrong, but at least a couple of their lines seemed a little more accurate than Gattai’s, and apparently I’m not the only person who has this impression, going by comments in another forum…so it’s like usual, everything has its ups and downs. I still prefer Gattai, perosnally, but I’d like to keep both versions around for now.

    The real first episode (episode 2) follows more closely to the manga, so we get to see a lot of things never seen before in the original series. Yeah, I’m more than eager to see what happens next.

    The Z Mazinger angle wasn’t used, but rather, recreated of sorts with Zeus as the very first Mazinger. Mazinger Z with Koji serves as a spiritual successor of sorts, followed by Great, and if Shin Mazinger allows, Grendizer and MazinKaiser.

    Are those subs for real? My lord.

  17. Crusader April 12th, 2009 12:01 am

    @Eej
    Well it’s not like there are so many groups that are subbing this one…

    @GGear0323
    I know the feeling.

    @AzraelNewtype
    I am not sure if we should really care…about where Mazinger Z is. Though my head hurts too, at least for a few seconds.

    @Kherubim
    DO WANT.

    @JDMFLCL
    Indeed if your going to be Super then GO ALL THE WAY.

    @Ressy
    Indeed makes you feel young again don’t it?

    @Tenryu
    I never saw any of it, but it was an AWESOME recap if that’s what it was.

    @Kaioshin
    Most of us might be confused as all hell but we really don’t care or ta least forgote when the BIG BANG PUNCH hit.

    @IKnight
    Good to know even a scholar like yourself is a tad confused.

    @Omisyth
    It will trust me…

    @mareo
    It’s like a wasn’t even born yet. ;)

    @animekritik
    It cannot fail.

    @XXX
    None whatsoever, I missed it, too busy being conceived as it were.

    @Chickenwuss
    This wait for subs is rather annoying, but it will be worth it from what you say.

    @Adi
    No this is a bit more mechanical…

    @Andrew
    It seems so.

    I’m surprised a big name group hasn’t picked this one up. I mean come on, it’s Mazinger Z for crying out loud!

    And yeah, Shinsen subs are pretty bad. Watchable, but not great nonetheless… Seems they’ve gone for very literal translations, which I’ll admit is better than watching dubtitles any time.

  19. Captain Wingman April 13th, 2009 4:36 am

    Okay… for those who have never watched the original series… all I can say is, that you missed a lot in this story. This is sort of a branch-of-the old tree series. The Original Z Mazinger appearedbeck in the 80’s, but it did not do too well, with the popularity of the earlier versions of the Z Machine (A monniker given by some fellow Mazinger fans from Latin America). But, this is a great adaptation, and mostly, action packed, from beginning to end… I have the old 1972 series, and I have been a fan of Mazinger Z, my whole life (I am 39.), and I can see much of the mythological background from the 1972 series, “Rocket Punched”, into this one… promising to make it a classic. The only problem I have is with this Zeus meets Mazinger scene… no explanation as to why has Koji been guided into all these battles, when Zeus himself can cut their throats off, being a “god”, all by himself? But, the action is good, the characters are fresh from the Mazinkaiser series’ design, and there is the ever present lethal weapon in any Mazin-Warrior: The 2,000,000 degree hot Breast Fire, that emanates of Mazinger Z’s red chest plates. The new addition is the God Scrander (?), that looks like the Kaiser Scrander, if you look at it, those who have seen the Kaiser series. Kaioshin Sama… the whole Zeus/Mazinger issue is this… Zeus is Zeus, but Mazinger, is a mechanized version of Zeus, envisioned by Dr. Juzo Kabuto, which explains the whole identical twin thing… I was confused also, but. I had to go back into the 1980s, and see what this was all about.

  20. Mazinonymous April 18th, 2009 6:59 pm

    @Wingman: that’s a good point about Zeus. Kouji’s grandpa probably based Mazinger Z’s design on Zeus as a symbolic gesture, since his statue was the thing guarding the room where the mechanical beasts were being stored (before he and Dr. Hell broke the seal, as shown in the first episode).

  21. d3v April 25th, 2009 11:27 am

    Belated observation – I had assumed that Venus A here was simply a rehash of her Mazinkaiser version. However, after ding a bit more research, it seems she’s actually closer to her Mazinger Angels version.
