>.> you aren't suppose to view it realistically! It's anime! There's an "anime limit" to realism as well as manga and cartoons.

I mean, if I view things realistically, not even One Outs would satisfy me because I can bitch a whole novels worth about it. And that is the closest a realistic series gets. Anime and manga have not reached the video game rule mechanics level yet, where the only problems arise out of bugs, exploits, and imbalances. If I was to compare, anime and manga are more like a game that hasn't even finished coding the series format, yet because the lack of player interaction it allows itself to be put up on the market.

Just think about it, no matter how popular SRW series or whatever gets, there is no anime/manga series out there that can translate into a game and be as popular as games like counter strike, halo 3, WoW, Sims series, etc etc. Why is that? Because anime and manga at a lower level of effort total package wise. I'm not saying a game studio puts in more work than an animation studio or a writer, but can you say you can't make just as good a story from a game than you can from a manga/book/anime series? That's crack talk. It's just WHERE the effort is put in.

It's like driving a car and flying a helicopter. One is at the NEXT LEVEL of transportation, but it doesn't mean it's more convenient ALL the time. If both are given the same money to be made, the car WILL outperform the helicopter in many situations, but the versatility of the helicopter gives it more long term power. As technology increases more and more, the car will weaken because it's fundamentals are smaller foundations than the helicopter itself.

Of course, to this day, we all still use cars and not helicopters, so by the time TV media and such get outdated, ALL of us would be considered dinosaurs. So don't take it with more than a grain of salt. I'm speculating/scaling WAY beyond.

@Pch: I am actually so shocked that i am wondering if you dreamt of this entire sequence. You have just increased my hatred of rich kids who knew absolutely nothing. How is THE INABILITY TO COOK CUTE? I actually laughed and berated a friend who was unable to cook an omelette. Of course, I am not a great cook but I can still make a decent homemade meal for anyone. It will take some effort but it will be tasty.

Sigh, what is the world coming to? I guess rich people are really in their bubble of stupidity. I pity their parents who made it big.

@D=: I am fine with having a mistake. However, I am taking it with a very realistic approach on the illogical thinking processes of viewers when they consider certain moe things. This entry is not going to justify anything, whether it is right or wrong but it is to show the ridiculous things that we find fascinating or cute.

Let me decipher it through your scenarios then.

1. plain dumb? Total fail for me. I hate dumb people but even dumb people can follow instructions using a recipe. Only retarded people who lack any ability to think or process will be able to fail it. If you are talking about such characters, I hate them too.

2. Having a drive to do so means she should taste her food until it becomes perfect. You mean loving a guy means to poison him?

3. Putting a lot of effort in general means it works. It suspenses logic that someone who made a lot of effort is able to create something terrible. Sure, it might not be art but it should at least be eatable... I mean, following a recipe... Oh my.

4. Tsunderes =/= retards.

I would not say that people cannot make mistakes. They can, but when it is obvious that the mistake can be rectified and it is not, I wonder why. Cooking moe is just too strange for me to understand ever. That said, Zange-chan is also trying very hard. She isn't great but not downright terrible. You can tell she did make an effort. Cooking moe sounds those that have hideous work.

I always fail at TL;DR T_T so no worries.

Oh, and I just thought of something, and hopefully will keep it small. I guess Impz views this from a more realistic pov. I mean, say girl who can't cook in RL but does anyways many times over. Yeah it must be pissing. Without a doubt. Cause even if it's cute the first couple of times, it's just plain dumb later.

With that, there's only 2 reasons left:

1. The persons "moe" or general appeal is so great it doesn't matter. So like, if a supermodel became your spouse, you probably wouldn't give a damn as long as the rest of their character is fine.

2. Resources are chump change to you. I THINK YOU ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN. BLING BLING.

3. You are one of those genuine tolerant people. Ryuuji of Toradora comes to mind, but even more so to the point where I go WTFRUSTUPID is Joseph Jobson from Blassreiter. WITHOUT A DOUBT, the most TOLERANT motherF to grace 2008 anime. That crap just RUINED the ending for me. NO WAY IS ANYONE IN RL THAT NICE. Well, that I know of.

Wow, sorry 'D=', a little too TL;DR for me. D= i usually like to read what you have to say, also because I write too much sometimes too, but too much for now. Maybe I'll come back later >>'

@Impz: Yes, you are lucky. I'm making sure now that I can cook well for later. XD
but I'd be one lucky person to find someone who can cook brilliantly too. ;) In real life, I'd rather not have a bad cooking moe....guy? XD In real life, it'd get annoying sometimes, but I don't get too mad anyway. So, if I do end up with someone who can't cook to save their life, thank god they have someone who won't get mad at them X3

Oh, I probably missed out a bunch of other reasons. But I can't think of any off the top of my head.

@Reika: Depends. I can sense the "moe" from Zange-chan of Kannagi. Because while she was terrible, she was cute. I mean, inb4pplgo"BETTER THAN HIRANO AYA" but it wasn't breaking my ears or anything, and it just "fit".

When Jin sang though, I was like....and I skipped the damn thing. Yeah I skipped frigging Kannagi. I also skipped Nagi's part, even though it was much more tolerable, I didn't want to hear the damn thing since it was boring and only the explanations garnered view time.

There are people out there that just love embarrassing moments. Like, not moments where even the character can laugh at themselves, but more like...wow you totally sucked it up type moments. I am one of those people who can't stand it and fast forward it specially when it was foreshadowed. My theory is that the genuinely terrible singing with no moe or redeeming appeal is just that. The "embarrassment" factor would likely be the appeal. It's not for everyone. Kind of like a side character who recently got built up in the story only to get rocked, but not as a jobber who builds up the guy who beats him, but just plain gets rocked and makes him a plain loser. Like, imagine if Rock Lee got beaten by Doggy kid in the exam after the whole story past flash back. Do you know how lame that would be? Some people live for that.

@Impz: Of course, it's not perfect. Anime "trends" or "cliches" are for the most part things that are food for people like this blog team to rant about ;P no offense, but if you think Japanese society can produce many outstanding creative people, you better visit Japan sometime. I just came back from there, and while in many ways it's heaven, in almost as many ways, it's absolute crap. People being complete sheeps is one of them(Though there are very "good" reasons why they are sheeps). I can say it's pretty much the opposite of Canada in a way, where the people here are too dumb to be swayed by one another.

The only excuse I have requires these scenarios. This is assuming I am the "anime director" or producer or script writer, blah blah blah. Could be one or more or combinations. Oh and before you read on, this is more for general moe cooking, so it really depends on the character you know? For every scenario, you got to have the right character.

1. Moe character is just plain DUMB. I mean, let's look at Nintendo superstar Kirby. If Kirby made you food, do you think Kirby would bother tasting it? Kirby's too puffball moe and silly to know what taste is, and would just eat the damn thing. Bad example I guess, since there's no way Kirby would cook something for someone else. But I'm trying to use an example where it's REAL easy to understand.

2. The character is in a scenario where that person is making food for someone else and has a 'drive' to do so. Say girl makes food for boy aka super cliche scenario. That girl might be like omg omg I don't want to waste ONE drop because it's ALL mai LUV for HIM.

3. Realistically, though this excuse will never hit screens, is the person put a LOT of effort into it, and is just plain TIRED. You ever take a test and you put in so much effort, that by the time you finish you are so worn out that you never even want to double check it for mistakes? I have. It's like damn, screw this, I'm beat. There is a "moe" way to it, with the whole -__________- kind of face tired and other ways probably, but like I said, THIS scenario, not within standard anime.

4. Tsundere easily takes the arrogant confidence in their Tsun Tsun while their Dere Dere takes care of the Moe that will transpire once the person has eaten the cooking. Taiga, Louise, you get the point. Actually, it's mostly this case where the character DOES taste it, but gives it ANYWAY.

5. There are cases where the moe blobs do taste their food or you know, recognize they suck. It's just that the receiver takes one for the team and gobbles it up anyways because they like the moe and probably find it moe even if it means indigestion and an hour in the toilet a few hours later. Kirby on the other hand ... is just Kirby. If he can eat rocks, he sure as hell ain't scared of your crappy cooking.

Since you gave out a great recommendation of One Outs, I'd just like to add that you should remember that everyone at times forgets their "common sense". Because really, common sense was never something you were born with. It's something you were raised by and taught. People take common sense for granted. Animes and stuff exaggerate way too much obviously, but it's still a sign that people will be off guard in many ways at many times. A professional runner can still trip as he's taking a stroll in the park even when he runs every day, so why can't people make mistakes with common sense though they use it every day? =]

@Sacchi: Oh ok. If it is to make me laugh, I can understand. However, some people do think that it is actually cute. I guess one of the key arguments is the feeling to protect. I didn't know protecting people incapable of following instructions is ...logical.

@Jpmeyer and Hinano: I kinda pity you for watching bad anime now.

@LDC: To destroy kitchens? no thanks.

@Jade: I don't know. I might just make a list soon when I get into the first year of writing this. It's not that hard to write something like this for fun. Ya, the salt for sugar is just way too stupid. I cannot stand it at all and it makes little sense whatsoever.

Arr, that crazy show made me feel so @_@ that I stopped watching after one episode. Too fast for this old man here.

@Bearzerger: ....what? boiling eggs is just ...NEVER MIND.

@Ryan A: Haahah, maybe. I just have some fresh ideas. My question still: How can a lack of competence ever be MOE?

@Likewise: Watch Akikan, you will like the suggestive dialog.

@Olivia: I won't go so far to say that they are a disgrace to humanity, but more of a disgrace to logic. Not that it helps much, but ya.

@Linall: Agreed.

@D=: I will just like to say, "how come these moe blobs never tasted their food before giving it to someone?" I think it's common sense to test it out.

@Usagi: Yandere...more like it.

@Catface210: Haahahah, well, be glad that guys these days can cook. I can cook but I am a messy cook. I thank god for having a girlfriend who can cook great meals!

@Sacchi: Oh ok. If it is to make me laugh, I can understand. However, some people do think that it is actually cute. I guess one of the key arguments is the feeling to protect. I didn’t know protecting people incapable of following instructions is …logical.

@Jpmeyer and Hinano: I kinda pity you for watching bad anime now.

@LDC: To destroy kitchens? no thanks.

@Jade: I don’t know. I might just make a list soon when I get into the first year of writing this. It’s not that hard to write something like this for fun. Ya, the salt for sugar is just way too stupid. I cannot stand it at all and it makes little sense whatsoever.

@D= : agree, totally. the girls on the 'really moe' end of the spectrum are always sort of helpless. And look at the range of disability moes.

To add to the whole hated-moe thing, the one moe phenomena that I totally cannot comprehend is the out-of-tune-singing moe. Guess it's the same 'omg she tries so hard but still fumbles and she's embarrassed but still tries' sort of mentality?

@D=: Agreed pretty much. Almost completely.

@usagijen: True. >>'

@Haesslich: Good times....good times. That's why I like that show. Points out these things in a humorous way.

@pch: Good example for 'D='. Guys usually feel like that are almost OBLIGATED to protect the girls in SOME way. Hey, might be your only chance. Snatch it and tell her that you'll handle all the cooking. =/

And yes, guys who can cook are pretty hot to us women now a days. =/ Really, the roles of male and female counterparts have changed. Guys will cook and be chased now and girls will chase and be laid back....Man, I feel so useless now that it's pretty much switch. >> I don't really want to chase, I want to BE chased. The cooking thing though, I don't care which way it goes really. When did this switch happen? >> Oh well, either way, gotten live with it. Better start learning how to chase guys well now.

Besides arousing protectiveness, I think "cooking-moe" can be related to ojousama fetish. Inexperience and failure in the kitchen hint the girls ' ojou-like breeding. Imagine Strawberry Panic images like tea, maids, and frills, and you will pretty much get the idea.

I made the connection from my experience. Once I had to live in a company of rich kids who never made use of their houses' kitchens. Everyone professed to have no knowledge of cooking. All they did during that summer was either repeatedly saying things to emphasize their incapability or praising those who could cook with wide eyes. Although they never burnt things like those anime moes, they were equally useless because they would not even try to pick up a spetula. The cooking inability then became a set norm and the trend was so quickly widespread that every girl in the camp claimed to not know how to cook (silly, isn't it?).

And believe it or not? Seeing the girls advocated obvious helplessness (which was more a pitiful incompetence in my POV), the guys' egos puffed up. They actually competed to cook for the girls to taste. One guy acted so pompous as though the dish he made was of a Cordon Bleu quality (I assured you it was not). Mark that most guys also came from wealthy backgrounds and had an equally bad cooking skill.

What interests me most is those guys don't really regard the the girls' inability to cook as a shortcoming; instead, they see it as a feminine marker. Normally, girls are expected to know some house works including cooking, but those girls did not know even how to cook omelette (seriously, they did not!)
Yet, the guys accepted it like a universally truth that women did not know how to cook. They even seemed to be satisfied with the fact.

And the atmosphere in the camp was like "oh, they don't know how to cook, how ojousama-ish, really!" The most popular girl was neither the prettiest nor the funniest but the most inept cook. She was admired by both men and women alike and was known for her "ojou" reputation.

Well, maybe for the riches, it's fashionable and ladylike for a well-bred lady to be a cooking-moe. Is cooking inability a mark of classiness? Or is it just that I bumped into a group of weird people?

Sorry for the long babbles, tacky sentences, and bad grammar.

I always get crazy when somebody is doing such a mess. there are people who cant drive /cook/ build houses - but thats why one has friends/ flatmates /DoItYourself books whatsoever.
Actually it`s discriminatory, because these are mostly females who should look cute with this.
Both parts of a relationship should protect each other. It only shows the weakness of the male charakter, because he needs this inability of the woman to be able to fall in love with her.
It`s absurd .. and as it is in so many animes so far, it looks like this is a pretty well accepted scheme in some regions of the world .. .
Acctually one seek a relationship because it ` s easier to not be alone but some can stand better not having a relationship than others.

@pp I hate going out for dinner ^^ - I cook my meals one time for 3 times in advance and then 3 days heating in the microwave. The best is, to have the fridge full with minimaly two sorts of self cooked meals. *making a huge smile in direction to the kitchen with a lot of fresh food in it*.

Actually, to touch on lelangir's early comment about Akiko and Sanae, I would argue that in Akiko's case, the jam itself is her sole disastrous piece of cooking - there is nothing else she is shown as routinely messing up, as Yuuichi and Nayuki eat her food every morning sans complaint.

As for Sanae... I think its more a matter of her cooking being weird as opposed to bad.

To get back to the post itself, I do find the inability to cook a curious choice for endearing the viewer to a character. I consider an inability to cook as a definite negative in another, and fairly indicative of a person possessing a basic incompetence.

well if someone can't cook, he/she can't cook. so being cute and all will not help in anyway, the food still ain't cook and everyone becomes more hungry. As you know, a hungry man is a angry man. So end of the day, someone must learn how to cook or the cute/moe girl pays the bill.

but i wouldn't mind having a rich girlfriend that can't cook. =x i mean, who would?
