Impz’s winter first impressions – Akikan, the manservice show!

Ok, I feel that my eyes are actually hurting. Should I be happy that the graphics were not that good?
Ok, unless I suddenly watched an early release first episode that was created by fans (I hardly think that fans are able to make it so fricking queer), I THOUGHT THIS IS supposed to be a straight fanservice anime. Why is there manservice in this anime, and a hell lot for that matter!
I am going to have so much fun for this review.
Summary

Kakeru Daichi is a high school student who never had a girlfriend in the last 16 years of his life. After getting cheated of his change on a vending machine, he bought a melon soda can. He bathed after reaching home. As he drank from the melon soda can, a girl wearing magical green clothing appeared from thin air. Assuming that it was all a dream (from his sexually repressed side of not having a hot chick to dig), he started to grope the girl happily while being completely butt naked. When he remarked that he was going to start using his tongue, the girl finally lost her patience and gave him a good smack with a green orb of light.

Hidehiko Otoya (the man) and Airin Tazaki were talking about Kakeru picking up a new soda can. She explained that it was soda magic, and it came about because he drank melon soda. Kakeru was clearly not listening, going on his fantasies and speculated that this was just a dream. Kakeru could not believe her still, so she convinced her by pulling her earring. When that happened, she disappeared back in the melon can. Hidehiko and Airin also came over to Kakeru’s house, and told him that they were government agents. Otoya also noticed that Kakeru was butt naked, and he assumed that Kakeru was flirting with him. Kakeru completely knocked out from the yaoi vibes, and woke up after the two left. He then drank the melon soda, only to find himself kissing the same girl again.
At school, Najimi, Kakeru’s childhood friend, was wondering why Kakeru seemed to be in low spirits. Kakeru asked whether Najimi knew about sexual relations between a man and a woman, and she started to think whether Kakeru wanted to snag her. However, Kakeru was not listening and said that this girl was abnormal and violent. Najime thought Kakeru was talking about her and started crying. Kakeru did not even know what he did, since he was clearly absorbed in his own world. Another random girl Yurika Kochikaze who is the protector of women (and hate men) appeared angrily and threw cards at the “insensitive” Kakeru for bullying Najime to tears.

When he returned home, he realized it was true. He then drank the melon juice through a straw, only for the girl to make some moaning voices. The girl explained that juice was her life, but it was safe as long as he buys new melon juice. Kakeru immediately rushed out to buy two new cans. Kakeru also bought other cans. The girl told Kakeru that he should drink no juice but hers, and threatened to throw his juice collection. Kakeru pulled her tab on her ear, and placed her back into the can. He then threw the can into the cupboard, and ignored her despite her pleas. After returning home from school, he mocked the girl but there was no response.
He drank the melon, only to realize the girl was unconscious. He then gave her a kiss, providing carbon dioxide to revive her. The girl scolded Kakeru because he could have just bought a new can. Despite her anger, she thanked Kakeru for not abandoning her to the trash. Kakeru said that he could not abandon such a cute girl, and he would train her to be a great slave for him. That earned him a tight slap. Eventually, he decided to name her Melon.
Thoughts

I watched this anime expecting juggling boobs and pantie shots. With that said, I was definitely not expecting the manservice to go into overdrive in the first few minutes of this series. I am not sure if this series is meant to be anything but extremely light and brainless fanservice. Do you know those anime series that you watch, you laugh a little and you immediately forget once the next season of anime appears? This is one of those series in my opinion, at least from how it attempts to portray itself in the first episode. That is not that big a problem if you enjoy such shows because you will from the sheer perverted nature of this series.
This series’s clincher line came from Melon-chan. When she said in one of her lines…
You cannot drink any other juice! You can only drink my juice!
I died laughing. Yes, I cannot resist laughing at such an unconscious attempt to make an unintentional perverted joke. Maybe it is intentional but it definitely did not feel like the story was trying to make it a perverted joke. When Melon-chan said it a second time angrily, I was already rolling on the floor laughing my head from the sheer ridiculous dialog between the main character and Melon. This type of dialog is one of many that got my tickle bone jumping. I do realize that such jokes run very thin after two or three times.

There is nothing really special about the characters for the first episode. They are in the “tsundere” (Melon), “Childhood friend (Najimi) and “Occult girl” (Yurika). That said, I do find that Najimi’s strange perverted thoughts were somewhat hilarious and makes her a less stereotypical character than the rest. I must say that Kakeru is probably the typical guy that you have no idea why so many fricking girls want his male member. I applaud the series for openly making Kakeru a total horny guy though. I am sick of the “I like girls but I am going to run away when a girl goes intimate on me.” That is like the most silly and nonsensical approach to romance.
However, this is supposed to be fanservice. I do not think I am allowed to think so deeply into the series. It’s just a series to laugh at. There are enough laughs in the episode for sure, what with the rather obvious sexual innuendos in the 20 minutes. I think there might be some changes here and there for the official release of the first episode on January 3rd, but I do not think that there will be a huge difference at all.
Animation is generally quite poor. I am surprised that there is a lack of facial detail and the proportions of the characters are somewhat off. It is strange because the character illustrations are taken from the person who made Shuffle! I do not understand why it is rather poor. This hardly spells well for a series that is probably focusing more on sexual innuendos and fanservice. Fanservice with poor animation is like watching “5 centimeters per second” on a 320 x 240 resolution. Totally unsatisfying.
The copy I have did not have an OP or ED, so I cannot make any comment on it. Other than that, this feels really like a cheap B-grade porn flick without the naked scenes. I think that fans of fanservice series might like this light series, but anyone who wants to find any resemblance of a plot will likely be disappointed by the lack of depth. I recommend this for anyone who has some free time, enjoys fanservice and likes the delicious variety of girls in this series. Other than that, it is one to avoid.

Did they show episode 1 as a special on some station or something to try to get some hype for the show?
When I read the summary for this and got to the part about needing to be infused with CO2 from kissing, I figured this was going to be just silly fanservice. Although it might be worth watching if there are constantly lines like the one you mentioned above, as long as they’re not the exact same every episode that is.
In regards to the poor animation.. I’m guessing most of Brains Base talent is working on Natsume 2 while the work experience kids are doing this.
…Not another mindless fanservice cliché action. I thought they already stopped at Kanokon already!
Nevermind, thanks Impz. I’ll check out the new winter season lineup after seeing this.
See I knew it wasn’t going to look anywhere near as appealing as the promo art. They never do…..
For an anime that is supposed to sell girls and their bodies, the chicks in this first episode don’t look that hot or appealing to me (ESPECIALLY the main girl)…… I know that it is hard to live up to the promo art, but they should do better than this.
At least, it should be VERY funny if the art and quality is like this. I like boobies (and actually manservices too, however the main guy isn’t appealing to me enough for his service to qualify as attraction), but I am not enough of a moe-addicted otaku to watch something like this for no extraordinary good reason.
This is gay. Manservice? Oh come on.
I dont know. But Ill still watch this shit for the lulz.
Isn’t the quality poor rather because it was streamed online at a low resolution?
Oh, the thing about “I like girls but I am going to run away,” personally I don’t really mind that at all because to me it’s not nonsensical either. Either way, it’s fun and entertaining to me to see all types.
FEMALE FANSERVICE FUCKING WHERE???
Episode was quite a disappointment indeed. Bad animation always makes me sad when I’m trying to take screenshots…sigh.
Impz: Does it give you any comfort that Jun Fukuyama of Inukami! fame is voicing the lead? If so you should have EXPECTED the naked manservice.
BEST ANIME OF 2009
Wahaha, I have been off for holiday free time and hence did not check the blog for the last 2 days. Finally back to comments!
@Nazar: It’s actually online on Yahoo TV. Well, it was actually rather painful for me in general since I am pretty much adverse to fanservice. When the fanservice turned into manservice, it just went into the realm of “so bad, it’s good” type of shit. I guess the cheeky lines of the anime might help a little but I do not think that it’s actually going to be great. Average, maybe, but the first episode does not grab attention.
@Westlo: Oh, i see. No wonder they look so stretched.
@TP: And Kanokon was loved by a lot. It seems that tons of people actually like fanservice. I don’t, sadly.I think that the winter season fare is rather thin, and I am not that excited about it at all.
@Kaioshin: Wow, you actually believe it a little to think that it’s actually possible? NO WAI!
@Kaitune: Totally agreed. The gals seem bland and boring, and I do not think that they are hardly attractive at all. I mean, Kanokon works because the animation is pretty darn good, and the gals are appealing. I do not like the fact that there is fanservice galore there, but I can understand why people will like Kanokon.
This? I cannot fathom except that people like mediocre stuff. Still, maybe something good will happen. Maybe.
@Kairu: Good for the lolz for sure.
@Silver: Nope, I admit that I got a 640 x 360 but it should still be decent at the very least. You can tell that it is not due to graphic degradation but the actual animation itself.
@LDC: LOLZ.
@Jenn: And considering that I do not even like fanservice in the first place, it is just a total turn off.
@Myssa: No, in fact, I am very surprised why he has to take such a bad role. I did not watch Inukami though, so maybe that is why.
@Illusion: YES.
Impz: Indeed. For the lulz. Ill watch it. ;_____;
[...] but better than Chaos;Head. So this is an ecchi, comedy show! What can you expect? Of course fanservice. But different. When you say fanservice, commonly its a service for fanboys. But this is different. [...]
Have to agree its not the low-res that’s the problem, its the detailing, especially the eyes, that were horrendous. What’s with the overload of eyeliner? At times the faces were out of proportion and inconsistent too. The character’s motions were very choppy and felt early 2000-ish.
Melon’s dress design looked pretty delicious, though the flatness of the animation killed any appreciation of it.
I’ll watch the actual release one to see if any improvements would be made, though i doubt it.
I lulz at the CO2 hadokan.
Heh, so I watched the early broadcast…I was going to wait for the official one, but I wanted to see why you and Kairu told me to ‘reconsider’ my decision…
It was this review that made want to watch in the first place, {skipped the summary part though ^_^’}, and after seeing the episode itself, there’s nothing to ‘reconsider’. I’m all for man-service and raunchy jokes, but it won’t be a MUST SEE anime, more like a “watch when waiting for subs” anime….
I don’t really care that this has no plot, I laughed hard and for a comedy show ,that’s all it matters.
I’m really late but w/e. I kinda enjoyed it. It’s simple and silly, but that’s the appeal IMO. And I think the show can get away with lower quality animation because of its genre and the style of the art. I laughed so many times because- as I told a friend- I thought like the main guy in highschool, I just didnt have the balls to say what I thought like he does.
