THAT’s Official “Best Anime of 2008″ Post

The gift of moe

The post of the title is pretty self-explanatory, but what the hell. I badgered several of the THAT authors into indicating along with me what they thought the best anime of 2008 was. Some of them (including myself) could not contain themselves and split their selection. Regardless, I think it’s a good way to close out the year. I hope everyone has a wonderful New Year, and we’ll be sure to be around in 2009.

Over 9000 Meaningless Words

←[100] first impressions on Mariaholic

In the first part, ghostlightning and I talk about Kannagi. In the second, superfani talks about art in general.

Essentially, the conclusion we came to was that the religious metaphorical elements are played out in such that they themselves constitute a subplot. This is how Nagi searches for idolatry. As in the second episode of Natsume Yuujin-chou, the god shrinks in relation to the faith he receives. A god with lots of faith is large, one with little faith is small. When the god’s only worshipper dies, his source of sustenance is cut off, and he dissipates. In the same way, “faith” in Kannagi is represented by popularity, by idolatry. It’s much more blatant in the manga, but the OP should make it clear.

The religious content was a plot – nagi accumulating faith had to be, incidentally or otherwise because the metaphor sets it up so that everything contributes to the subplot, incidentally or otherwise.

So…

Reverse Vampire’s Top 10 Anime Shows (And YES, the list is biased)

CCS, anyone? The New Year has arrived!

To end of 2008 (With so many ups and downs) and hope 2009 will be a better year for everyone living in this planet. Economy crisis, natural disasters, political crisis and global warming, GO AWAY! (Well, except for global warning. You can’t get rid of that.)

Note: Yes, the list is biased (Because 6 out of 10 are based on seiyuu cast). If you did not see your favorite anime in this list, either I really hate them or I did not watch it at all because I think that group of shows does not suit my taste or I don’t even bother to watch them ’cause of time restraints OR I think the show is inappropriate for me (With lots of fanservice and the show is irrelevant to the point I shut my brain down and pick up another series that is worth spending my time on it.)

Now on my top 10 anime shows in 2008! If it sucks, remember: it’s only my opinion not yours. (Spoilers ahead)

Skip Beat Ep 13 – It’s time to make a voodoo doll for Erika

null

If I was Moko
I think I would understand
How it feels to hate this Erika
I swear I’ll be a better woman

I will not listen to her
Cause I know she is an ass
When you lose the thing you wanted
Cause she’s taking you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

Memorable Individual Episodes of 2008

Let’s all watch together with Nagi-sama

Like the title says, this post reflects what I see as the most memorable episodes of this year. These are in no particular order, and obviously don’t include episodes from shows I have not seen. Feel free to comment on my selections and add some of your own. I’m sure there are plenty of you Macross Frontier fans out there who may have an episode or two to add.

Kannagi Episode 12 + 13 END – Let’s wrap this one up.

Or in Jin’s case, unwrap. Ufufu…

So the series is finally over (for this season anyway) and it’s been a heck of a ride. We’ve been overloaded with fun and humor for a good portion of the series, but when things finally got down to it, they hit us hard with a bunch of drama and emotional episodes towards the end. I can’t really say that I liked the pacing that much, but overall, I think it was perfectly fine if you weren’t really watching the show for a profound story or anything.
