possible reasons why did Mei return:

#1. She believed that her brother will be "fired up" again.

#2. She's happy as long as her old onii-chan is back

#3. As long as Okazaki is there, Youhei should be fine

@ Myssa Rei:

I have purposefully lagged behind in the game (I've logged 10 or so hours) because I fell so in love with the first season that I wanted to experience the story KyoAni's way first. That's a big problem with shows based on other works - to those who have knowledge of the original, the show is a retelling at best, and at worst simply visual fanservice - think the first Harry Potter movie. This is compounded by the number of different ways to experience the story - series, manga, VN, movie, etc. While the VN may be the definitive cannon for Clannad, I would have preferred either a straight novel or straight anime series, but it's not for me to decide. Rather, I have picked this medium as my intro, and while I hope that KyoAni will close all the gaps I know it is impossible, I still look forward to the day the series ends and I can fill in the gaps myself with the VN, other blogs, and wikipedia. I do feel better knowing that something is going on with him, and I appreciate you keeping the secret ;) Now I'm excited again rather than pissed off - I need to remind myself that this is a Key work and not a KyoAni one.

@ Baka-Raptor:

But he did need help, just not necessarily hers. And I still think that it was KyoAni who forced her home, rather than it being her decision to leave. The animators should have more faith in Mei. Get thee to a child services center.

Perhaps Mei was being selfish. She kept on meddling in her brother's life because she wanted to rest easy knowing he'd turn out ok, not because he actually needed her help. Let her go home without closure. She should have more faith in her brother. If my little sister started spying on me, I'd beat her.

Jiff: Youhei WILL turn out for the better, though it will probably feel like it came across left field for people not familiar with the game, the movie (a MAJOR sledgehammer of a revelation), or the Tomoyo After AU OAV. Kind of funny how KyoAni has avoided dropping even the SLIGHTEST hint about what the heck Youhei is REALLY doing aside from goofing off (a hint here: he's not living off his parents).
