While Alto-hime did give Ranka encouragement, ultimately though he was never there for her when she need him the most. Ranka did remain a child and it cost her a lot in the end.

Perhaps it all would have been solved had Brera not been Ranka’s brother, but part of me thinks that Ranka was used to demonstrate how annoying bro-con and the moe blob imouto can be in an anime.

I see little reason to complain, they actually played it straight instead of going for anything overt.

Yeah they promised and they delivered. Mecha pr0n was very enjoyable, but I trust that most of the rage came from the rabid shippers who will hopefully move on to the next show so they will not trouble us once the movie airs. I am hoping they lavish more budget for the final fight since there is still room to make it more godly.

Also, I cannot see why people complain about the so called “fanservice” in the episode. It’s not even as bad as say… kanopr0n or sexirei or rosario to crappu. At least there’s no teasing and you get the goods.

Alto-hime is my most favorite character, and the main reason I started watching this series too. lol. How can they make a male lead role that more beautiful than most of the girls in the series? (but it works…)
All love problem will be solved if Brera just isn’t Ranka’s brother! -*- I feel that they felt that made too many developments for AltoxSheryl. So they added someone for Ranka’s side, someone who gave her attention, and that’s Brera. However, he has too be related to her or sth. that they can’t become couple, otherwise, this Macross Frontier will lose its ‘Triangle’ theme.

Great post, and have to say that I’ve really enjoyed your coverage of Macross Frontier so far; they’ve added some extra depth and insight to a series that I would otherwise have been watching without paying any mind to interpretation.

As regards to the Alto/Sheryl vs. the Alto/Ranka relationship, I think you’ve been a little harsh on the relation between Alto and Ranka – there’s definitely something to it, as with the whole flashback with Klan about why he enlisted in the first place, and his many moments of encouraging Ranka, but I still think you’re accurate in showing his relationship with Sheryl was much deeper.

The vibe one gets from the Alto/Ranka relationship is more something of Alto trying to act as a brother/mentor, with Ranka misunderstanding the affection for something more romantic and having a crush. Overall I think Ranka’s character really is a lot more understandable (though perhaps still not defensible) if you chalk up her behaviour to the fact that she’s still a kid.
