This is Mr. Kawamori, he’s crazy…

Hopefully, by now the shock from the Kawamori’s troll has since passed, but suffice to say if you were never privy to the Kawamori’s talent for trolling consider yourself schooled. I had a slight suspicion ever since the infamous Pineapple Cake episode that we were going to be in for a troll at some point. It was not all together surprising to see that up until episode 25 aired that Macross Frontier was riding high on people’s lists, sadly only a few old Macross Vets had a vague idea as to what was in store when Kawamori threw down the gauntlet that was Battle Galaxy. After that only the uninitiated and die-hard shipper ignored the warning, the last ep was to be an EPIC mecha fight that would be the greatest of everything Macross. If you were a Macross vet then your homage check list was complete and how! This a long post but I hope you will pick at it section by section at your leisure.

He’s not your typical anime director…

First off if you are a rabid shipper, or dislike j-pop Macross Frontier is not for you, but if you are a casual mecha fan who is willing to acknowledge that all character development pretty much ceases in the next to last ep you would do well with Macross Frontier. Still at the end of the day it was for the most part a celebration of 25 years of Macross slightly updated. If you still remember all those years of sexy fighters transforming into bad ass mecha it was almost everything you could have asked for in a mecha show. While I agree with Martin that one had to be familiar with the older Macross series to fully enjoy it, Macross Frontier remains a fine mecha series, though for whose who want to going back to get more of the history is a worthwhile endeavor.

Kawamori never spells out things any more, so liberally fill in the gaps…hell we still don’t know what happened to Minmei.

Since most of the recent rancor was over the unresolved triangle, it really depends on whether or not you need everything spelled out for you. Moreover since all character development ceases at episode 24 for the most part my Alto-hime did make a decision, and I reiterate that salute to Sheryl in his VF-25 was all the confession you really need if you are a long time Macross fan. It would be pretty cliché to just have Alto-hime say that he loved Sheryl, instead given his fumbled confession in 24, calling out her name every time she was in danger, invoking Sheryl’s name in trying to inspire Ranka, and saluting her on the bridge of Battle Frontier it seems plain that my Alto-hime has a very special place in his heart for Sheryl. However it is possible for Ranka to turn things around someday, but given how she has been stagnant and recently backsliding to the very end Ranka’s declaration of “I won’t lose” seems incredibly hollow, and for the most part can easily be dismissed as more wishful thinking on Ranka’s part. Besides really how does Ranka’s resolution affect how Alto-hime treats Sheryl? Not at all in my opinion so unless Ranka gets Ai-kun to run Sheryl through Ranka’s chances of wedding my Alto-hime are pretty much non-existent.

Mecha

The only way ep 25 could have been more awesome.

After watching the whole series again, one does appreciate the coolness of having CG dogfights more akin to Macorss Zero than the old methods of recycling in Macross 7. What MF manages to do to build upon the orgasmic dogfights of Macross Zero was increase the size and scope of every engagement. It is abundantly clear that much of the animation budget was reserved expressly for the purpose of sublime battle sequences and was a clear indicator of what Kawamori and his team felt was the most important aspect of MF, big huge battles. While there was recycling of scenes for the most part they were not common enough to become annoying and Kawamori did give every Macross fan what they had wanted, the epic fight between Battle Galaxy and Battle Frontier/Macross Quarter. The greatest success of MF was to have raised the bar for all mecha series to follow in delivering the final battle, and I have no doubt that Gundam 00 will have its work cut out for it in meeting the MF challenge for claiming the most epic mecha fight of 2008.

It was a fan wank 25 years in the making.

The VF-25, VF-27, and even the lowly VF-171 were all pretty sexy looking mecha that look quite different from each other with the VF-27 looking quite exotic, the VF-25 looked conventionally streamlined, and the VF-171 looked very stealthy. I really did like how the VF-171 was a major contributor to the war effort by not being exclusively cannon fodder. It was a joy to see that Diamond Force was around with Machida leading the grunt charge to give Ozma a good run for top pilot. Even now as awesome as Ozma is Machida could probably give the old Fire Bomber fan a good run if they had the same machine, after all Machida’s fist is still mightier than Ozma’s little knife. The capital ships also saw a fair bit of action though the humble Guantanamo class seemed to get hulked more often. The biggest attraction of MF is not only are its fighters sexy, but there are three Macross class vessels that look unique and fight in very different ways. Northamptons, Uragas, and the humble Guantanamo all have their share of screen time. Even the Ghosts get some new additions to their families, most notably Macross Galaxy’s V-9s which sport the same kind of weaponry as the formidable VF-27. In essence every thing that could ever fight in the Macross universe was present in MF in force. The full spectrum of every kind of ship was accounted for in the 25th Anniversary, along with one new addition the EX-Gear. The EX-Gear system is still one of my favorite new additions to the Macross Canon, works well as an ejection system over the older pod, and can double as a mobile infantry system that enhances strength and mobility. In essence Macross Frontier is probably the mecha series to beat for sometime given the sheer amount of mecha elements that more or less fit seamlessly together.

On Vajra

I disagree with otou-san and the verdict that Macross Frontier offers nothing new. In fact MF has the most unflattering depiction of NUNS of any Macross to date with the political back stabbing, deep seated hostility towards the Zentradi, and the arrogant assumption of miclone cultural superiority when faced with an enemy that was superior in most respects.

The Vajra were a significant shift from the typical Macross opposing force since they were not humanoid nor were they in the business of recognizing individuality. I think it is important to note that while the Vajra were radically different it sort of pays to try and discern what message Kawamori was trying to tell us in his use of bugs. Overall within the Macross Canon the Vajra do predate Protoculture and given how bug like some elements of Macross Zero’s Protoculture elements were Grace probably was telling the truth. I suspect that the choice of “Ai Oboete Imasu ka ~ bless the little queen” was meant to imply how culturally arrogant NUNS had become. The Universe is incredibly old and there were beings in existence before Protoculture the Vajra were in some respects superior culturally, they existed for the good of their species, and they had advanced to the point where they could overwhelm any other space faring race given time. Biology often does last much longer than technology and even our own DNA replication methods have been highly conserved since long before the apes known as humans discovered fire. While we can take pride in out technological achievements Mother Nature is still superior. While they had no individuals, and subsequently were free from ambition and had little in the way of inter-species conflict. Even if they are different they still have to mate like any other creature, and perhaps since they focus on breeding for the most part perhaps they are superior for it since NUNS is much more expansionary and is still embroiled in a conflict with uncultured Zentradi. It is quite fitting the Vajra are bugs, and like our own insects they were here before us, and they certainly will be here long after we are gone. For all their achievements Protoculture died out, but the Vajra who have no concept of ego and whose main goal in life is to explore and mate have out lasted them, and perhaps will outlast the Zentradi and humans as well.

Unlike previous OPFORs the Bugs did not take kindly to being boxed…

That is not to say that the Vajra are without fault, if anything it seems that even if Ranka was baiting them with Aimo every episode or so they do seem to look down on humanity as well. In NUNS they meet two sub species that have been at war with one another and with each other, from the outside looking in you do not get a flattering sense of NUNS even if they are the good guys. For starters while the Zentradi have been integrated within NUNS there is still plenty of room for conflict as we saw with the 33rd Marine Fleet, Glass’s anti-Zentradi faux pas, and Leon’s sacrifice of Island 3 (the Zentradi mall and agricultural island) to save all the miclone Islands despite Island 3 being the least damaged. There are plenty of subtle hints that even now the old prejudices are very much alive even if the Zentradi have mellowed out a lot and have gigantic Zentradi children. Given how NUNS is still seething with conflicts decades old, it is small wonder how a “greater good” race would find this kin-strife detestable, perhaps when they juiced Giliam they saw it little more than crushing a pest that was culturally inferior; not unlike how we crush ants with little concern.

Yeah deculture man…

Perhaps in the end proof of cultural superiority is not merely just having song, but rather how much we devote to nicer things like procreation? Where most of the military hardware produced by NUNS is for the purpose of finding new worlds and fighting uncultured Zentradi, the Vajra developed everything for the express purpose of breeding every few millennia. NUNS explores for new worlds to colonize in a vaguely imperialistic fashion, while the Vajra travel and explore to meet new races for a brief romantic liaison. In the case of the Vajra though having military power on their level likely evolved out of contact with other space faring species that either saw them as prey or pests. It’s interesting to note how the Vajra did produce one valuable resource that NUNS coveted and actively hunted the Vajra for, in a fashion not too dissimilar to how Japan hunts whales. Given how much of hippie Kawamori is I would not be surprised if the use of Vajra was a slight on how we humans are so arrogant as to believe that we can plunder other species for resources. It is rather telling how for the Vajra Aimo was always a love song, but for NUNS even love songs have become weaponized, I think that says a lot about how human technological development is still largely based off technology that helps us kill each other.

Kawamori Hugs More Trees

No it’s not a troll, but there are days when I think Kawamori has powers of prophecy…sort of.

The fragility of Frontier’s ecosystem was no accident and I believe that no other Macross series has highlighted how eco-friendly people ought to be. Much of the budget could have been saved to make Ranka look better on screen, but Kawamori and his team spent a fair bit of time making Frontier look stunning. I am still over awed by how faithfully they recreated San Francisco, and was duly impressed when they showed the aftermath of the Vajra attacks in the latter half. Kawamori has always been a tree hugger and while Zero touched on a paradise lost, with Frontier we saw an out and out melt down of their ecosystem to the point that no amount of technology could over come. It’s a clichéd message to be sure but in the end we only have one planet, and once it’s gone we have no fleet or Vajra planet to fall back on. The fixation on conservation of resources and recycling did produce a paradise on Frontier when it was in its prime, and despite the artificiality it certainly is a better place to live than in many parts of the world. The complexities involved in balancing the artificial eco-system really does highlight how hard it would be to take it all with us if the need arose, right now we simply can’t and if we play it right we won’t ever have to. As fresh water and oxygen are essential to life once Frontier was dying we did see a possibility of things to come once fresh water really becomes scarce and if our air quality plummets, it really isn’t that far fetched and is one thing Kawamori has been preaching for some time now.

It is also important to note how unlike many previous installments of Macross science has not been demonized to this extent until now. Grace was in many ways the epitome of the seduction of unbridled and unprincipled science along with all the promises it offers, while her goal of galactic domination is nothing new, Grace still does represent an immortal terror that transcends natural things like death. It’s a common theme in sci-fi how men might become slaves to their own machines, but here it’s not a problem with machines, but the removal of limits that comes with it. Grace was always ambitious and with her cyborg nature she feared nothing and was willing to wantonly kill and abuse her fellow humans and zentradi in ever more audacious experiments. At one time experimentation on humans was not out of the ordinary as in the case of the rabies vaccine, but now we have the can of worms we call stem cell research, DNA manipulation, and cloning and while many of these are still in its infancy things can get out of hand. It won’t be just science that will kill us all but rather our ambition, our arrogance, and our recklessness in how we use the technology and sciences we have that might be our undoing. Like Grace the true horror of it all is concealed in a very seductive and benign package.

Kawamori’s Take on Music

LISTEN TO MY SONG!

Kawamori usually has something to say about the music industry and I believe that MF is no exception. Grace was in the business of manufacturing idols like Sheryl who used much of their sex appeal to gain fame. However like many idols Sheryl found out how even her fame was not ever lasting no matter how hard she worked or how dedicated she was to her craft. Sheryl’s fall was not unlike that of many idols of years long gone. Sheryl’s fame evaporated almost over night in favor of the next big thing and her music fell from the charts so quickly that her albums went from top dollar to 30% and finally to 50% off in a bargain bin. It really doesn’t get more humiliating than that. Grace was the one who took her in chewed her up and then spat her out with gleeful malice, no matter how much credit Sheryl could claim as her own Grace’s marketing skills was what sold most of Sheryl’s concert tickets. Ultimately I think that the message from Sheryl was that even when the fame is gone it is still no reason to give up your craft if you still believe in it. If you sing some where out there some one will listen. Question is will the size of the crowd matter? For Sheryl it didn’t and for a lucky few musicians even if the crowd gets smaller their legacy still lives on in their songs. I know that many of us still have our favorite oldies as time goes on, and perhaps for singer or musician that is a form of immortality worth pursuing.

Sing often enough and you can annoy people into thinking your song is good.

Ranka’s case is fairly interesting since she did work her way up the hard way, however like many young idols she eventually got drunk with fame and let it all go to her head. Ranka was riding on top of the world and felt that her fame to would last and get her everything she wanted. Whether Ranka had intended to or not her rise helped accelerate another’s fall. Despite knowing Sheryl, Ranka became so wrapped in her own fame that she lost sight of everything she had. I think that in many ways Ranka’s career highlighted how young idols should not be put on the fast track to fame. It exploits them for one, but it also does not serve their personal development either. Ranka took her job very lightly she ditched work, broke her contract, and ended up all the worse for it. Her fame separated her from what few emotional anchors she had to the point she no longer looked to her old friends or family for support but ultimately a pet. After getting the best marketing in the galaxy Ranka’s work ethic took a nose dive and despite her sweet personality she did end up being a dick to others. Glass had to take flak for Ranka’s Ai-kun hunt, and undoubtedly the bereaved of Frontier were probably miffed over her refusal to sing during a tragic and uncertain time. Making young women idols makes them less of an artist, not more so given how they might be inclined to take short cuts and subvert their art by selling out like in Ranka’s case with Grace’s Aimo remix.

Alto-hime and Sheryl’s Love

In the end Sheryl got her Sara.

Unlike Kabitzin I don’t think that just because it was never clearly stated who ended up with Alto-hime that the developing relationship between the diva bitch of the galaxy and the greatest oyama that ever lived was any less enjoyable to watch. Watching things from the start again does impart a new view on things at times, given how I am confident in how my Alto-hime is not some duplicitous tart, it was enjoyable to see how Alto-hime and Sheryl blundered into each other. From the start Sheryl’s presence is ubiquitous at the time hime folding paper planes with her posters wasn’t surprising but it does serve nicely as a portent of how eventually they ended up together. It as more heavily highlighted when Sheryl ended up in Alto-hime’s arms for the first time. It was unintended as it was sudden, and their relationship would start with the first exchange of Sheryl’s earring, but certainly not the last. It was a rocky start but eventually they built up a ludicrous amount of momentum when you consider how Ranka’s relationship with Alto-hime never really went anywhere. Despite Alto-hime’s protests hime did little by little appreciate that Sheryl was a performer in her own right and not some cheap exhibitionist.

In the end Sheryl and Alto-hime were on the same page, as for Ranka….

In hindsight it seems apparent that Alto-hime was inspired by her and held a begrudging admiration for Sheryl’s unwavering confidence in all of her actions, her indefatigable attitude, her sense of invincibility, and her determination to carve out her own destiny. In the beginning Alto-hime had just fallen out with his family over his own destiny and it was heavily hinted that Alto-hime was getting into fights and stirring up trouble as he was without direction. He wanted to be a pilot but was wavering over how to go about it. Hime ran into Sheryl just as he was ingloriously tossed out of SMS, and soon after hearing Sheryl go on about not leaving her fate to other people, Alto-hime quotes her when he confronts Ozma again. While Ranka gave him a reason to join SMS, it was Sheryl who provided “the never give up” attitude that allowed Alto-hime to survive the initial hazing, as Mikhail’s doubts over Alto-hime’s dedication were not completely unfounded.

So when they went back home…

As time went on Alto-hime did appreciate Sheryl’s drive and took an interest in her career whether by working for her, getting pissed off when the public started mocking Sheryl as a has been, or being ill at ease when Sheryl’s workaholic nature was compromising her health. It becomes abundantly clear that when Sheryl is at her lowest that Alto-hime is disappointed and angry at her for going back on the very principles she espoused and he took to heart. They were both performers and while Alto-hime felt that he had left his stage for good in the end he could never forget what it was like to be Sakura-hime, there was a level of understanding on that level once Alto-hime accepted Sheryl’s art as legitimate.  Towards the end it was nice to see that Alto-hime surrendered his pride for Sheryl in going back home and deal with, ultimately accept, and embrace his past. Eventually his feelings of admiration and mild physical attraction to Sheryl became something more and reached a critical mass once he realized that Sheryl was not so invincible after all. Accusations of a harem end seem patented untrue given how hime had a conservative upbringing and seems to think more highly of his preference for monogamy in contrast to Mikhail’s womanizing.

What no iSlug?

I have stated it else where but for me it was great to watch Sheryl go from that haughty arrogant diva end up as a more humble and likable young woman who was devoted to her art. Sheryl’s reasons for falling for Alto-hime seemed rather lame at first but eventually, she sees that hime is an honest hime and was able to connect with Alto-hime in a short amount of time. Sheryl had been to a lot of places and probably never intended to be on Frontier for long hence after their first date Sheryl seemed ready to let Ranka and Alto-hime develop on their own when she went back to touring. Events transpired against her and perhaps out of her loneliness reached out for the only person she knew on Frontier. They had a lot in common the loss of their respective mothers, being forced into a harsh regimen early in life, and a loathing for their homes, even if they learned to care about their respective fleets. Despite her attraction to hime the thought of being some how dependent on him seemed anathema to her independent way of life, it was only after she lost everything did Sheryl come to accept that despite her teasing of hime, Alto-hime stuck by her.

Many years of bliss at the rebuilt Folmo.

After learning the hard lesson that she could not do everything on her own, and even if she never asked for it, Alto-hime came to her aid time and time again. Once she realized that  that her doom was not too far off she retreated into her old ways of being alone, but even as she pushed back Alto-hime pushed back even harder to prove that he was not with her out of a sense of pity but because he genuinely cared on a level that was deeper than a friend’s. It was only Sheryl who ever brought out fully hime’s softer side without the usual hot blooded snarky attitude. Once we got to see the softer gentler side of Alto-hime it really seems as though Sheryl fell for Alto-hime for the right reasons, hime was sweet, caring, and had such a skewed view of gender that hime was not above domestic chores. Indeed given how Sheryl seems new at this cooking thing it was wise of her to fall for a rather independent hime. I have to say Sheryl’s choice of waifu was indeed a good one.

After the earring gambit succeeded Sheryl got bolder with her dress-up Alto-hime schemes, it also cut down on clothing expenses…

It was nice to see how it really felt like a courtship between both parties, while Sheryl came to her conclusion much sooner than Alto-hime, even if hime could never put it into words (that flying analogy sucked) he really went above and beyond for Sheryl to the point going on sortie had become a nuisance. They eventually came to rely on each other rather than go through life exclusively alone, whether it was Sheryl assenting to being taken care of to Alto-hime invoking Sheryl when he finally went off to bring Ranka back in something other than a casket. Given how much Kawamori had built their relationship and how neither Alto-hime nor Sheryl suffered as much recycled and out right bad animation as Ranka, I remain confident and adamant that in all probability they did end up together no matter how cheesy the end was. I think that if you can accept that in the end Kawamori was being a troll, and that 24 was the last truly serious episode then Alto-hime did confess to Sheryl even if it was fudged. Given how Alto-hime is used to being kissed as Sakura-hime, I don’t think hime is use to initiating a kiss, at least Sheryl understands that much.

Ranka as a Kawamori troll on moe

Yeah it seems that Kawamori made sis-con come true…and for once I really hated it.

One thing that struck me while watching the whole series again from start to finish was how Ranka really had it bad even compared to Minmei. Ranka suffered greatly in the character department as she was stagnant and backsliding until the end with her damsel in distress act, and her rather shallow reasons for trying to get into Alto-hime’s kimono. What is abundantly clear about Ranka’s relationship with Alto-hime is that it was very much about hime rescuing her, listening to her, and for Alto-hime to wait on Ranka. It was very much of a crush up until the end as Ranka never bonded with Alto-hime, even the last serious attempt was overshadowed by how late it came. Ranka seemed to want to be the center of Alto-hime’s life much like how she was the center of Ozma’s and Brera’s she was spoiled, but she was genuinely infatuated and never really wanted to do ill. However Kawamori has never favored his female characters for just being well meaning and earnest. Maturity has been and continues to be a running theme with most of his female characters. Ranka in the end showed little signs of maturity and less so that Minmei in my opinion. Where as Minmei did contribute a lot to the salvation of the human race, Ranka demolished nearly two whole fleets with her singing. I think that by inverting the power of song to something more of a bane and a curse that Kawamori was implying that power in the hands of a teenager can cut both ways. In Minmei’s case it cut the right way, in Ranka’s case it cut opposite because she lacked the emotional maturity to remain faithful to her song and sold out with the Grace Aimo remix.

The more I thought about why Ranka got the short end of the stick when it came to animation, characterization, and new outfits the more I suspect that it was not just necessity in order to conserve the budget for the sake of awesome mecha action. Towards the end Sheryl suffered much less in terms of animation and received a whole lot more love in terms of costumes, Ranka had three stage outfits while Sheryl had almost twice as much. If the animation had been more even between the two I would not have thought much more of it, but since Sheryl looked incredible in episode 24 and the beginning of 25 while Ranka got her patented recycled shot from the OP. Thus I suspect that Kawamori’s treatment of Ranka was much more than a budgeting decision. It was uncharacteristically harsh for Kawamori to make Ranka this stagnant, and I do believe that it might have been a rather scathing criticism of the modern fixation with moe.

Ranka is still free to visit their home though.

Ranka was moe, she was loli, well meaning, naïve, timid, earnest, and above all was head over heels for the lead with her nursing her crush until the very end. In the end though almost all of that was turned against her, her loli build made it rather hard to accept Ranka as a woman, as Klein had the benefit of an imposing macronzied form. Ranka’s well meaning nature led her to aid greatly in the slaughter the Vajra, who had from the start intended to use her as a bridge between them and NUNS, for sake of others who had no way of understanding the Vajra. Ranka’s timid nature allowed Brera to beat up Alto-hime with impunity. Her earnest love for Alto-hime led her to betray her song in a bid to garner more attention, and Ranka became comfortable in her crush to the point she was unwilling to risk her own heart until she “saw” love signs from Alto-hime. Her naiveté resulted in the near total annihilation of Frontier once she got into Grace’s clutches and it was a major reason why she never suspected that Ai-kun could be mad at her or that the responsibilities she had undertaken really had a lot of weight. Given how Minmei never had it nearly as bad and that Kawamori seems a bit too seasoned for this to have been an unintended mistake, I suspect that maybe we’re meant to get sick of Ranka’s antics, because eventually the very things that made her moe made her character and motivations to be rather shallow. I suspect that in the end Ranka was meant to be redeemed a bit, but it is hard to ignore how she never got anywhere without help or someone pushing her forward. Since Kawamori is an environmental hippie, Ranka’s import of a foreign species might well be a flag that Ranka was never going to be favored. I could be very wrong about this, but while Ms. Megumi Nakajima will benefit immensely from her break out role I think that history will not be kind to Ranka.

In the end while Ranka waited Sheryl jumped across and took hime.

Perhaps that was what Kawamori had wanted given how it wasn’t just being loli that was the problem (Klein onee-chan’s important presence debunks that), but rather the other qualities that made Ranka moe (fangs and all) seemed to get by far the harshest treatment from Kawamori and his team. I know for the most part I was rather ticked off at Jesus Ranka in episode 25. It would have been better if there were consequences for Ranka, but in hindsight moe characters usually don’t get steam rolled, and for once when I sort of want Ranka beaten up a bit the moe shield prevents that for better or for worse. Even Ranka’s bro-con was successful turned into something truly hateful. If Kawamori intended to get under my skin with a moe character he and his team have succeeded, even here where Green Haired Lolis often get praised, I can’t deny that I really dislike how Ranka never grew out of her moe love interest role. In the end I have no doubt that Kawamori is going to milk the moe thing because the only thing better than trolling is to get paid while doing it.

Minor Characters

Meltran Trio? Deculture!

The minor characters are treated well for the most part with Mikhail getting one of the more memorable and well executed deaths in recent times. Luca struggled and eventually succeeded in shedding some of his shouta image, while Nanase was a very good friend to Ranka even if Bilrer beats her out in fan-fu. Wilder was a bit stock, but at least his willingness to go for eager young girls makes him different, if in a slightly disturbing way. Ozma was the epitome of the never grown up man-child who still thinks his oldies are cool. For the most part they did help impart a sense of history to Macross Frontier, even if it may lean a bit too much on the “life long fan” side of things I have to give Kawamori and his team credit for sparing no effort in making Macross a generational franchise that doesn’t forget where it came from.

In the end though, much of my minor character love went to Bilrer, Klan, Cathy, Bobby, Ram, Monica, Mina, and Grace. Bilrer I liked mostly because of his devoted Minmei fanboyism, but also because Bilrer was the Zentradi success story. He was the zentran who was able to walk away from his warlike nature and become a transport mogul from probably nothing given how the zentradi had no money or wealth to speak of. His train set was freaking awesome and he did play the part of shadow recluse who has a file on every one quite well  He’s the kind of man who you don’t see do much of anything, but given how clueless everyone else is, you are sure that grandpa Bilrer was still doing things for his employees. Bilrer is probably the first zentran who doesn’t seem ignorant of miclone ways, and is by far the most gregarious of all the zentradi we have seen. While there was much miclone hate within NUNS, Bilrer’s success and the sight of giant zentradi children refusing to eat their carrots was a welcome sight on how things had changed for the old villains of SDF Macross, it’s not so much what he does but more of what he represents.

Bobby’s Daughters

The running theme of strong women is very much in force with Macross Frontier, and it was good to see Cathy go from mean jaded middle aged woman to a mentor and independent who got a second chance at love. Perhaps much of it was nostalgia for Misa, but I think it was delightful to see Cathy rebuild her life after having to give up a lot of her dreams, get engaged to a sleaze bag, and end a relationship on a bad note. While I am sure Ozma doesn’t deserve Cathy it was refreshing to see an older woman succeed in love and life again after she failed at it in her youth. Bobby was just awesome, not only could she go into GARby mode when roused but also because he was the mother figure to Ranka (albeit briefly and unsuccessfully), Cathy, Ram, Mina, and Monica. In the end the combined package of bridge crew minus Wilder was a delightful sight. I felt that they were competent and didn’t much mind their small talk. In fact I thought it was an inspired decision to have their fangirling as a means to introduce us to Alto-hime’s past as Sakura-hime. Even when they went shopping the experience didn’t annoy me as much I though it would have because they went during a time of godly low prices and made it more of a black Friday type deal with Cathy’s sale-fu being the greatest.

Well at least Ranka will always have Nanase.

Strong Meltrans are nothing new, but I think Klan deserves special mention since she was no Milia clone. While the loli thing seemed like blatant fan baiting at first it did serve as way to highlight now tough it would have been had there been no miclone/macronization process. Max and Milia had it easy, Klan and Mikhail had it tough since Mikhail didn’t want to get arrested and romance would have been weird either way. As meltrans go Klan was probably the most cool headed and much more of a mentor in personality. I think that Klan was more representative of the Zentradi still in transition, Klan did not want to break the family tradition of being a soldier, but on the other hand she was much more even tempered. The military tradition won’t die with Klan but being a medical student at the same time also shows how not all zentradi have rejected military service but neither is Klan one of those who refused to integrate. While Milia demonstrated an aspect of meltran motherhood, Klan demonstrated meltran sisterhood. Given how Alto-hime seemed to have trouble communicating and getting along with other males, Klan was probably the only one who could get through to hime. While Yasaburo was always preachy, Klan was subtler in her handling of Alto-hime given how she never undercut herself and commanded hime’s respect, most likely because she was a veteran pilot, and because she was a meltran given hime’s fondness for the zentradi mall (imparted to hime because Miyo-sama was a Meltran, I assume). With Klan at the head of the charge it was great to see macronized Zentradi playing a prominent and positive role on Frontier, hopefully in the future we will see more macronized Zentradi living at peace and being treated better by miclone big wigs.

Grace dead? Were it so easy.

Grace was probably the most delightful villain of the year. I believe most of us were certain that Leon would end up as the evil guy at the start but once Grace slowly infiltrated her way into the upper echelons of power she became a top contender for villain of the year. Even if her end was suitably Macross in that she was laid low by the power of love and culture, Grace still proved to be one of the most subtle villains in recent memory whose methodical revenge bordered on Glaurung levels of evilness. In Grace you had the terror of science, monstrous manufacture of idol singers, and the burning desire for revenge rolled into one. Grace not only made the son of her rival Ranshe her slave, but poisoned Mao’s granddaughter (probably killed Sheryl’s mom off too) and turned Ranshe’s daughter into a tool of galactic conquest that spilled a vast amount of blood, human, zentran, and Vajra alike. Leon got duped big time and up until the end Ozma and Cathy had no idea that Grace was the one pulling the strings. No one could destroy people quite like Grace from crushing Sheryl’s self esteem to making Ranka a tool with but a word Grace is still the one to beat for revenge that went all the way down to the very last descendants of her enemies. Hopefully Ms. Kikuko Inoue will be able to get more evil roles in the future.

I

I believe in both of them, and I believe in what they have built together. Hopefully my Alto-hime will agree to become Sheryl’s waifu.

Over all in spite of some glaring animation flaws I liked Macross Frontier a lot. It would be nice if animation was more consistent but it seems that Kawamori isn’t willing or able to cut advertising deals or just likes blowing the budget on deculture mecha action. I still think Kawamori is a troll (let’s not forget Pineapple Cakey) but at this point I can and am more than willing to take his bullshit as long as he delivers the kind of mecha action I crave. I trust that for many mecha fans that episode 25, after discounting much of the Jesus Ranka action (which thankfully is short), will remain the mecha battle to beat for sometime. It is rare indeed to see 2.25 Macross class ships slug it out, we won’t see something like that again. I hope Gundam 00 will be up to the challenge but seeing as how they lack something of comparable size, perhaps Prince Ali will make up for it with the sheer number of kills, disfigure Wang Liu Ming, and cripple Setsuna for life.

Final grade: YAKKKKKK DECULTURE (A-)

[…] Final analysis and verdict: Crusader put forth some striking notions: that Ranka is Kawamori’s troll on moe (I rather enjoyed reading that bit, even as I hurt inside for Ranka’s sake), and a great case for the Alto x Sheryl ship (hurt me some more, will you?). A great, great read. […]

Wow, epic post. I might end up commenting here again later on because you’ve set out A LOT of good points here. I know, I know, I need to rewatch it. ;P

Kawamori’s tree-hugging leanings came out again in this case, which I think is reflected in the nature of the Vajra. The idea of using Ranka’s character (and lack of character development) as a criticism of the moe archetype is an interesting one - I’d love to hear what the man himself has to say about it. Kawamori is after all a great storyteller, and when a character is treated as unsympathetically as hers was, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s an important underlying reason for him doing so. It overlaps with portraying the pop music industry in a very cynical light too, I think.

As for the ending, I agree that we’re seeing an Alto/Sheryl pairing - which would make most sense to me, at least. The thing is, the likes of Plus, Zero and even the original series make it clear how the triangle resolves itself so while it’s easy to deduce that this was how things turned out, I was still expecting the writers to make it a bit more obvious. On the other hand, a ’show don’t tell’ approach comes across as a bit more mature and intelligent than a ‘happy ever after’ one.

Epic doesn’t even begin to describe this post.

“This is Mr. Kawamori, he’s crazy… (and acompanying pic)”,”It was a fan wank 25 years in the making.” “Kawamori never spells out things any more, so liberally fill in the gaps…hell we still don’t know what happened to Minmei.”

The amount of laughs I got out of this? Many.

Also, Sheryl. She made me remember love.

Amuro1X added these pithy words on Oct 01 08 at 10:17 am

Suddenly the episodes about Ranka’s burnt cookies make sense…

I was just thinking, Ranka doesn’t deserve Alto. She was going around singing mating songs to every Vajra who would listen. Then there was the time she made out with Ai-kun in the park. What’s up with that? Isn’t that kinda skanky? Sheryl might wear nothing but suspenders, but at least she saves her mating songs for Alto.

The really impressive thing about the mecha in Frontier is how there were no absurd powerups. In fact, Alto powered down! The VF-27 was the superior VF throughout the entire series. EX-Gear integration into the cockpit was pretty cool, although the suits looked a little dorky outside of the cockpit.

Your point about the Vajra predating Protoculture is true, but only on paper. The problem with Macross Frontier is that while we got a hint of this awesome thematic statement, it was crammed into very little screentime. If we had gotten more information about the Vajra all along, Ranka wouldn’t have seemed like such a mess-up. It is funny how (aside from Ranka), the only way to communicate with these bugs is to get naked and start singing, or get naked and get tentacled.

In the end, I’m not even sure why the Vajra would tolerate humans/Zentradi taking over their planet. Did they want malls? Do they plan to fap constantly to Ranka’s song? Is Ranka their new Ranka vi Britannia (Didn’t Ranshe catch Vajracteria from some random scrub Vajra)?

Your point about Ranka receiving less animation attention was excellent. Ranka got a costume designer and then Nanase got put into a coma for the rest of the series! Damn! I feel like Kawamori raised Ranka up just so he could tear her down.

The whole bridge crew was surprisingly awesome. I enjoyed watching Cathy rise up from being Leon’s after-work special into a strong woman who could catch a sale and elbow a soldier in the face. Bobby even let her take the wheel (well, 1 of 2) at the end!

Finally, those Sheryl x Alto pictures are so cute. The Raramia pictures are sad because she got shot down and no one cared.

LOL!! Love the photo shop in the first picture, priceless!

I am very happy with Frontier. When the first leaks of information came out about the show I was excited and worried. I loved Macross and Macross Plus, DYRL is my fav movie of all times, and I even liked Macross 2 (you can slap me, I can take it). But I was so scared of a repeat of Macross 7. Now I watched the whole F$#(@ thing and I must say I am not sure how. Macross Zero was better, but lets face it the story makes very little since and if not for the cool CG fighting it would have been crap.

But Frontier started strong and had me on almost every episode. The Macross Zero episode was great, I don’t know if it was Crusader or someone else that did the scene for scene comparisons, that was funny stuff. I also loved how the show could make fun of its self. All the inside jokes had me in stitches and some of the situations and scenes “stolen” from previous series was really good. The music (well Yoko Kanno anyway) transcends my iPod and is permanently embedded in my top 25. I believe that music will save us all some day and personally can’t wait for some Zentradi to come down and try to kick our butts!

If anything my only complaint is time. How did Macross 7 get 50 eps and Frontier gets only 25!?!?! I know we got a movie coming, but 7 got 2 of those too. Maybe there will be a second season, one can only hope.

I am and will always be a Macross fan. I hope the movie is worthwhile and that it is a countinuation of the current story. Hopefully MR. Kawamori will not make us wait long for another series. And hopefully he won’t subject us to another Macross 7!!!!!

P.S. Ok, I’ll admit it, I am a closet Macross 7 freak. Nekki Basara was an ass for the first 26 eps, but after that he kinda grows on you. Fire Bomber is also on my iPod and I thought Ozma was cool as hell to be blaring them on his radio all the time. Please, please please Mr. Kawamori if you are trolling this put Basara in the movie!! Even if its a small walk on role, maybe a bar scene with him playing guitar next to a tip jar, please give us a Fire Bomber cameo!!

While I am still sore about the outcome of the LT, when I consider an earlier statement that character development ended in episode 24, I do feel a lot better about how Kawamori ended the series.

I found this overview incredibly refreshing and really applaud your analysis, even putting Ranka in a light that doesn’t totally villify her. Thinking about her character like a writer with a message actually helps me appreciate her, though Sheryl and Alto are still love.

After reading this, I can safely add a fifth star back to my personal rating for the series.

WTF, where did you find that macross 7 wedding pic? I always thought the triangle in macross 7 was left unresolved too, but now 7 years later i finally know who Mylene chose. Man….if crusader never posted that pic, i would probably never find out about it ever

Kururu added these pithy words on Oct 01 08 at 4:24 pm

@Martin
Looking back at Escaflowne not even Meryl got beat as much as Ranka did, and in light of past works of Kawamori I don’t think I have seen him neglect a main characters as badly as he did with Ranka. I have my doubts that this was a mere accident given how Ranka seemed to get struck down at almost every opportunity. When she made it big it was not before long before she betrayed her song. Perhaps it was just a coincidence in the end but I guess we won’t know until Kawamori deigns to tell us, still Ranka really got the short end of the stick in almost every way.

Music has been a very central part of Macross and I am sure that having been associated with music for so long that Kawamori has a cart load of axes to grind when it comes to the rapid attrition of idol singers in Japan and elsewhere.

Alto-hime and Sheryl were much better treated than Ranka and one gets the sense that it was more of a process than a love at first sight thing. Despite the tsun tsun attitudes between both of them seemed to do nice things for one another when it counted, as in the case of Alto-hime’s first combat sortie, Sheryl’s concern over Galaxy, etc. It’s rather ironic when you look back and realize that Alto-hime came to Sheryl’s aid more times than he came to Ranka’s Alto-hime only saved Ranka twice at the beginning and at the end, both times with help, all the other times it was Brera. They certainly had a better idea of who the other was despite their public persona of strength. They weren’t looking for love, love found them. It is also interesting to note that even as Alto-hime was the most in love with flying, he did give up is VF-25 to be with Sheryl, I think that has some great implications as to how much hime cares for her as well.

@Amuro1X
Hehe I am glad you enjoyed it I was saving up those 4chan pics for the end.

Yes may Sheryl have many happy years together with her waifu.

@Kabitzin
Yeah it was a twist to see that how Sheryl the exhibitionist was far more loyal and faithful to the hime she loved than Ranka. Ranka was the modest one but in the end she did engage in rather skanky behavior, mostly because of her dalliances with Brera, and I am sure the Vajra were kind of ticked off as well that Ranka wanted to collect boys.

Yeah it was good to see that in the end there was no upgrade aside from the VF-171EX which wasn’t that great. The EX-Gear is still pretty cool, heck I know I would want one even if it looks kind of dorky. Portable mecha 4TW!

I am not so sure about the Vajra only predating Protoculture only on paper, at least from my understanding of biology it probably took eons for the Vajra to become what they were, and from the outset they were superior to NUNS in almost every way given how a small commando raid blasted its way past the defensive lines. Needless to say even our own insects came before us, sentience is not an indicator of age.

The Vajra left right after Grace was defeated, they turned over their lease of the planet and went back to their native galaxy, only Ai-kuns stayed behind, because he was Ranka’s true love. As for the rest they wisely chose to get the hell out when the NUNS was low on ammo maybe int he next mating cycle they can find a better way to get along, but for now they decided to let thing cool down before asking to become permanent residents.

Kawamori was tearing Ranka down at nearly every turn and given how Sheryl and Alto-hime looked smexy at the end when Ranka got recycled shot with the same out fit she has had sine ep 4. One cannot help but wonder why it seems Kawamori had it out for Ranka. Kawamori certainly gave Ranka a lot less screen time with Alto-hime than he gave Sheryl, and in the last time they were alone was so uncharacteristically bad that it seemed deliberate.

Ramia never had a voice actress…it was kind of a death flag in and of itself…

@forgottendiary
’til death do they part.

@Zentari
Richard Bilrer will follow her there and back, also if you know I am sure Grandpa Bilrer is more than wiling to reward you for the coordinates. ;)
@Lowlife187
I thnhk that by going with 25 episodes that they made the right decision I don;t think they could have dragged it out any more than they did and seeing as how the animation varied greatly from ep to ep.

Macross 7 was just different, I think it should just be left that way.

@abynormal
Ranka was never a bad person, but ultimately because she did not mature and was kept stagnant her character suffered immensely.

@Leviathean
Kawamori always seems to have something to say, and it’s always fun to see what that old looney has to say.

@Ascaloth
I have been a Macross fan for a long time eventually you learn to see things, otherwise just take the occasional literature class.

@joe gelb
The 1980s were a good time, certainly could get away with much more then than you can now.

Whoa. Is that really what Kawamori looks like? For some reason, I was imagining him as more of a Wilder type guy. With a beard.

And I guess I can accept a SherylxAlto end not being explicitly spelled out, but it still bugs me how Alto copped out with saying ‘You’re both my wings.’ How I see it is when Alto first joined SMS to protect Ranka, she served as his wings. Then in ep. 24 during his confession scene with Sheryl and the sucky flying metaphor, I was certain he was gonna tell Sheryl she was his wings before she cut him off. To say both of them were at that point just seems kinda finicky to me.

d3v added these pithy words on Oct 01 08 at 6:47 pm

Wow, epic post indeed with a lot of good points.

(…)I suspect that maybe we’re meant to get sick of Ranka’s antics, because eventually the very things that made her moe made her character and motivations to be rather shallow.(…)

I think your rather right with that one, I for one stopped watching MacrossF since Ranka’s “I’am moe, so everbody has to love me even if I am more or less nothing else than moe” attitude started to annoy the hell out of me (Somewhere aroung episode 16-17). Boy, am I glad I picked it up again, Sheryl song in episode 20 (when she sang in the bunker) was absolutely awesome!

I might rewatch MF later when I have the time, a lot of things have indeed a more subtile and deeper meaning than I noticed on the first run.

Also keep up with you awesome posts - I love ‘em.

@JHL
Yeah that’s what Shoji “new age hippie troll” Kawamori looks like. Given how Kawamori can tell a fairly good story for him to think that being that ham fisted as he was in episode made it come off more like a troll than anything else. For the most part I think that Episode 24 is really the last episode we can really take seriously given how all of episode 25 was EPIC fanservice for Macross Fans.

He certainly could grow a beard, but at least his in universe persona sports one.

@LDC
No Kawamori s the master troll, he gets paid for trolling… :P
@D.J
Yeah after the conclusion of 24 things were pretty much set, the outright heavy handed character development was rather uncharacteristic so I am confident that much of it was a blatant troll in the end though I got my 2.25 Macross ships going at it full tilt. That alone made me forgive the rest of the troll.

Besides watching Sheryl and Alto-hime grow together was a joy to behold. I really disliked Sheryl when it started but in the end Kawamori made me like her a lot more. Both of them have come a long way and it was an enjoyable courtship.

@d3v
Yeah it was a somewhat different experience to watch it all over again. You really have to wonder though about Ranka, since it was the first time I had ever seen Kawamori neglect a main character up to Ranka’s level. I have seen enough of Kawamori’s work to know that he can made a good character if he wants to but in Ranka’s case given how she really got the short end of the stick when it came to animation, and development. It makes me wonder as to the reasons why since other things could have been axed in favor of Ranka but in the end even the Frontier fleet got better animation than Ranka. I don’t think that Kawmori would have been so careless with the 25th anniversary series for Macross, so I am thinking it was deliberate.

@Versus
OPFOR- Opposing Force.

Yeah I had hoped Ranka would break out of the moe stereotype role she had at the start but once that did not happen Kawamori turned Ranka’s moe aspect into something detestable. Eventually it came to the point of Ranka’s greatest tragedy that out and out demolished her. Given how it was heavy handed and Ranka never did make a real recovery from it even if Ranka was the most inclined towards love and peace her delivery of it was pretty bad. Given how Sheryl had it better overall you have to wonder why Kawamori neglected Ranka to make her come off that way. It seems more to have been deliberate rather than an accident since Kawamori has been through the motions before.

@EvilDevil
Thanks.

You know what’s funny? It’s how some people in forums are dissecting the salute scene. Why they can’t just accept it as the DYRL homage and move on with their lives is beyond me.

The biggest turn-off in Macross F would have to be the inconsistency in the animation and for me; they didn’t really tap into the characters’ potential as much as they should have (especially Ranka’s).

But despite it’s flaws, Macross F is, hands down, the best anime I’ve seen this season. I’ll be suffering withdrawal symptoms for a huge while. XD

raile added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 4:16 am

@raile
The inconsistencies with the animation in Frontier aren’t as jarring as those in the original SDFM. Actually, the only Macross TV series with consistent animation was Macross 7, it was consistently mediocre for the most part.

d3v added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 4:55 am

Thanks for this excellent analysis, Crusader! :)
As for me, Macross Frontier was probably the anime which has fascinated me most in the last decade. Full Metal Panic had me nearly as much on edge, but it lacked that certain “Macross” feeling, which I´d known since I watched Robotech as a child.
I never downloaded RAWs before Macross Frontier, but this show had me on the edge of my seat for every second it was on. I can only hope we will get many OVAs of it, hell, a second season would be merited.

The animation was mostly excellent, with the CG always looking amazing and the normal animation ranging from fantastic to good. Except episode 8, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

The fights were beautifully done, and it would have been nice to see more of them. I guess budgetary reasons were a deciding factor why they were rather sparse, in comparison to the original series.

I can say without reservation that almost all the characters were excellently realized, with only Ranka, Brera and Leon missing the mark of greatness. Even the minor characters all got their moments to shine, and I would love to see them back.

That the romance wasn´t concluded, ah, conclusively is one of the parts which still makes me sad. I know that all the indications are there that Sheryl and Alto will stay together, but after the epic set-up in episode 24, I simply would have preferred that Alto would have clearly chosen Sheryl, instead of Kawamori leaving it to us to infer it. Still, I agree completely with your conclusions. Alto was shown repeatedly as someone who *cares* and who is a keeper of his word. So to assume that he fickly would leave Sheryl… it seems very naive to me.

As for Alto, he is one of those characters of whom one needs to look a bit deeper to discern their personality. I won´t go into more detail, because you basically said it all already. I´d love to have a(nother) guy like him as a friend, because here is a person one could trust to guard your back.

And, of course Sheryl. To put it bluntly, I haven´t seen a better character come along in all my years in anime fandom. Her character development, her personality, her determination, her selflessnes, not to forget the character design… greatness. Just greatness. I don´t believe Kawamori will let her slide into oblivion so soon, so I expect more great things of her. She will stay in my pantheon of great fictional characters forever, together with people like Spike, Willow, John Sheridan, G’Kar, Londo Mollari, Tyrion Lannister, Arya Stark, Victor Davion, Kai-Allard Liao and Anakin Solo ( and others I forget to mention at the moment ). Such greatness doesn´t come along so often.

All hail Queen Sheryl!

primeparadigm added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 8:37 am

Thank you for clearing up some things. Ranka was always the weakest part of Macross Frontier for me. I really disliked her, and yet I disliked the way she was treated by the story even more. This just put things in new perspective. I’m just interested to see if you have anything to say about this musing of mine, about Alto-

You know, when I first watched Frontier I was really frustrated and annoyed that Alto never seemed to make a definite choice, and absolutely flummoxed as to why he would like Ranka. (I don’t buy the innocent Ranka act, and I don’t think Alto, who was able to bring out the most exquisite nuances of an art as subtle and refined as Kabuki, was entirely ignorant of the ways she tried to manipulate him either.) Part of it was probably his act- trying to turn his back on his past, he tries to ignore what he knows from it. Part of it, as I said earlier, was that Ranka was an all too convenient foil for his act. Alto was a very very conflicted guy at the beginning. It’s something inherent from his character design. I mean, here is a guy who apparently wants to cut all ties to his traditionalist home and past, and who hates being called “hime”- yet he doesn’t cut his long hair, or even change the style to something not quite so- hime. That’s kind of asking for it isn’t it? And the show brings out his inner turmoil with regard to his duty to home and calling, too. What really happened to make Alto turn out this way? It’s clear, in an understated way, that he really does love his father, yet we never see Alto face him. As a person who places as much value on responsibility as the series seems to want us to think -witness, for example, his reaction to Sheryl “abandoning” her fans in ep 1, or his many quarrels with Michel over the latter’s supposed playboy ways- it’s got to be placing a lot of stress on him inside. By using Ranka- by protecting her and playing along to her innocent girl act, Alto gets a way to manufacture a heroic/responsible image- to assuage his conscience. This is played out by their history. In ep 1, Alto got Guillaume killed. That, I think, figured a lot into his motivation for joining SMS. Ranka is inextricably linked with the incident, and thus with Alto’s reasons for being a soldier- Ranka, not for herself, but for who/what she stands for, the innocent in need of rescue.

Further, at the beginning of the series, Alto wasn’t just conflicted, he was unsure of himself and, well, his masculinity. I have my suspicions that his desire not to be typecast in his hime role (this suspicion reinforced by the very suggestive images of his Nii-san and him which pop up over the course of the series) and his fear of liking that role too much has much to do with both this and his neuroses about leaving home. So in short we don’t have the traditional masculinely confident hero, we have- something like the modern Asian man in an empowered woman’s world. I think it’s not something people who live in more Western type societies will think about or even understand readily, but it’s an issue that has come under public scrutiny recently where I live. Basically, it’s a clash of values. Here you have the traditionalist Asian mindset, which dictates that men should take the lead and women should be beautiful and submissive. And here you have women competing in the same arena as men, sometimes not only being just as competent but more so, and beautiful to boot. Apparently, to many Asian men, this confidence is intimidating and therefore they’d rather go for less attractive/confident prospects rather than risk the chance of being turned down. Rewatching the series makes it more clear to me. Alto is clearly attracted to Sheryl- to name just one thing, we see him blushing many times at something she does- but he is intimidated by her, by her achievements, by her fame, her confidence. He doesn’t know how he stands with her; he is unsure, scared to take a step in case she’ll laugh at him. In her own way, this problem is part of Sheryl’s making. Remember her calling him a “slave” in episode 8, beating him up for helping her in episode 16? Her constant avowals that he likes her? And her habit of putting him down? Conflicting signals. Ah, the mating patterns of the human species, so confusing. Someone more confident in himself, less traditional, would recognise them for what they are, but Alto, emotionally, isn’t ready to be sure. Even in episode 21, when she shows him her vulnerable side and hugs him, he isn’t truly sure that she loves him, because it could just be that she, lonely and scared, needs someone for companionship and it could be anyone. It wasn’t just Sheryl hurting in that relationship. Yet Alto pressed on. Possibly, it was only in the penultimate episode that they truly confessed their love to each other. I really love that scene, Sheryl at her dressing table and Alto coming to bid her farewell before he goes off to war. I watched it many, many times, wondering what exactly Alto was thinking when he looked at her with those eyes, when she told him to save Ranka. My take on that scene is that it was only then that he realised, that he knew, felt, that she loved him. That he could be sure of her love. And that it touched him deeply. In many respects, Sheryl is the person most worthy of respect and admiration in the entirety of Macross Frontier. She’s really too good for Alto. He’ll never find as good a woman as her anywhere, even if he looks for an eternity. But I think he really realised it then. And something about Sheryl’s behavior in episode 25 also leads me to believe that she realised his love, too.

Um. Anyway. ^^;

Great production values. Typical, Cliched alien menace story. Decent mecha battles. Useless secondary characters Bobby, Bridge Bunnies, Nanase, notable exception was Klan. Great music. Superfluous insert songs. Unresolved plot holes (Who were the voices Grace was talking to anyway?) and a major component of the series (or any Macross franchise for that matter) left unresolved.

Would’ve been better if they’d focused more on the alien invasion and giant mecha battles and less on the melodramatic love-triangle that went nowhere. Why didn’t they use the Macross Quarter more? That shit was badass. Could’ve used more valkyrie/vajra fights to Mayn’s music.

Lots of throwaway episodes that didn’t really add anything to the overall plot development (Ventradi Mutiny for one).

Overall it was entertaining and pretty good eye-candy but isn’t anything that’s really memorable or worth keeping on my HD for.

Enjoyed most of your posts on this series eventhough I disagreed with some of your conclusions.

Wohoho…. great post
I was a bit trolled at last episode of Macross frontier, but i didnt disappointed though…
if i just thinking about triangle love relationship until the end, it seems i lose so many good stuff in this series.
I’m a sheryl fan, but the main purpose i watch this series is all about mecha battle, and the quality of animation that made me stunned since first episode macross frontier has been launched in various fan-subs (well, there are some flaws in animation but it didn’t distract me at all, i just watch casually and enjoy it)
For Crusader: is great for you pointed some good points and things that seems so questionable, keep up the good work
my rate for this series is (8/10)

@d3v
Haven’t seen it yet, but I am sure we might get one eventually. Would be awesome though.

@LurkerJay
grace is still out there along with a cyborg army lurking in the trackless void between the stars. Perhaps one day they will become the bane of NUNS as much as the Kamijin’s legacy.

@ghostlightning
Have fun taking a trip back in time, just be prepared for QUALITY for some of the series.

@Wesley
Well supposedly Kawamori loves his Ranka puppy…

@>_
Successful Troll is Successful.

@raile
I think Kawamori and his team did a great job into tapping Sheryl’s character potential, if only the same could be said about Ranka.

@Magnus
The mecha action over all was godly and well worth watching the whole series over all. Alto-hime is harder to read in a way, but Sheryl did receive a lot more development, well more than I anticipated and by the end I felt she was one of the more memorable characters in the franchise. I’ll probably do one more post on it later.

@primeparadigm
I know what you mean, part of me is still waiting to see if there was a new raw or something. This will take some getting use to.

@Aine
Well I don’t think that Ranka was trying to be manipulative, but ultimately it sort of tied into Alto-hime ans his sense of masculinity. I’ll give a better response in a full post since my original comment became a wall of text.

@Halcyon
Well there is still Gundam 00 in a few days.

@Setsuna kun
Thanks for reading. Yeah once you get passed the idea that the triangle is all that there is to this series it becomes much more enjoyable.

@haruhiphantom
Well at least Nanase was not successful in overthrowing her. Sheryl did get a hime at the end though.

Crusader added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 8:12 pm

@Crusader
7 start of quite slow and painful (and kinda show why they decided on 5 episodes from Frontier), however it picks up around halfway and builds up to an epic ending. The animation quality is rather mediocre though, at least compared to SDFM and Frontier. The only positive note as we don’t get any sudden dips in quality like the Max/Miria fight from SDFM or the Hydra fight in Frontier.

d3v added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 8:34 pm

Wow, quite a deculture post there. Your thoughts on Ranka’s character development make a lot of sense, now that I think about it. (I still prefer her songs to Sheryl’s though; however, I think Diamond Crevasse should win song of the year at next year’s Seiyuu Awards).

I’m surprised more people haven’t compared Grace to HAL the computer. Her voice sounded somewhat like HAL’s (mostly calm and almost emotionless), and one could say HAL also represented how dependent we have become on our machines and technology. Yes, I’d imagine Inoue-sama enjoyed this role greatly. I think she has played some villain roles previously, right? Also, that’s a great painting of Grace there; looks almost more lifelike than in the anime. @Crusader Where did you get it?

Andrew added these pithy words on Oct 02 08 at 11:10 pm

@d3v
Will try to get further along, but some elements just take some getting use to the controls for one…

@Andrew
Grace took way too much joy out of what she was doing so in that regard she was not completely emotionless. As for Ranka I do suspect Kawamori for being harsh on Ranka since it’s not that he’s incapable of making a good character, but it seems unlikely to have been a mistake for some one of his caliber.

I got the picture off of either 4chan or danbooru, but I forget which though.

Crusader added these pithy words on Oct 03 08 at 12:15 am

Actually reading this post and thinking back about macross frontier, I suddenly realised how it’s actually slipping in a lot of things about relationships, in real life not anime.

The ranka thing is probably making a very pointed remark at how moe-ness actually don’t work in the way we think it does, shown in almost all other moe-focused anime.

In a sense, moe-ness in girls is a very idealistic concept, like tsundere, just that while guys know that in reality they’re better off without tsundere girls, their conception of moe-girls aren’t that clear, I guess.

So that probably is what they’re trying to poke at in macross frontier — that relationships are vastly different from simple crush.

I guess it helps too that they’re expecting old fans, who’re probably the age to appreciate maturity in their anime?

The mecha’s in for mecha’s sake, I bet, which is why while we find the relationship part worthy of discussion, the mecha part generally lacks in adherence to decent common sense and good storyline.

But nonetheless…that ending was unpleasant for me.

which brings me to another point– did anyone suspect that they’ve had a hidden layer of satire with that last episode there? both to mock the way lots of anime scramble to wrap up, and also possibly that people ought to wake up from the immature expectation that the world will turn out like they wish, also hinted by the maturity-in-relationship thing.

reika added these pithy words on Oct 03 08 at 12:57 am

TLDR.

No wait, I read a few.

I think the only thing interesting I could derive was that Ranka was an archetypal moe character. And to me, she had so much potential but was FILLED with so much deus ex (LITERALLY), that I think she fell apart and sorta became one big cliche.

Alto, also, his ambitions and background being way too vague to truly grasp at what he’s actually feeling, why he’s exactly flying, etc.

There. NOT TLDR is it? heh

Quite an impressive and deep analysis. Wikipedia should have a link to this post on Macross. Just a few rants, err.., I mean reflections on what you said:

> but if you are a casual mecha fan who is willing to acknowledge that all character development pretty much ceases in the next to last ep you would do well with Macross Frontier.

Are you suggesting it’s ok for a story to proceed without a story?

> … my Alto-hime … my Alto-hime … my Alto-hime …my Alto-hime …

OK, I get it now; you’re in love with the hime. :)

> However it is possible for Ranka to turn things around someday, …

Right before you said, I could, though reluctantly, agree with you that we can accept Alto’s decision by reference of past Macross traditions, but then you went on to point out that openness. It is exactly this kind of “non-resolution” that makes this series feels so incomplete. But then again, I suppose ep. 25 isn’t the end—the upcoming movie is.

> The greatest success of MF was to have raised the bar for all mecha series to follow in delivering the final battle,

I can’t agree more with this statement. Given how Gundam 00 first season was, I can’t see how second season can surpass MF.

> For all their achievements Protoculture died out, but the Vajra who have no concept of ego and whose main goal in life is to explore and mate have out lasted them, and perhaps will outlast the Zentradi and humans as well.

Hmm… This is a very interesting thought you introduced here. Mindlessly shagging all day long sounds hot, but personally, I’m not so sure I want to trade my own individuality to live as a neural synapsis. This sounds like what a communist would say. An important aspect of our humanity is our individual right to pursue our own independence, liberty, and don’t forget our own hopes and dreams. :)

At the same time, so much of our differences in ambition have produced the most despicable of humanity’s atrocities.

> Perhaps in the end proof of cultural superiority is not merely just having song, but rather how much we devote to nicer things like procreation?

So, you’re proposing orgies solve life’s sufferings. I’m in!

Our humanity’s difference from the bugs is that we have evolved to higher thoughts from just life’s basic instincts to survive and procreate. So, to say that the Vajra are superior is to say that more evolution is actually de-evolution. That to me seems like chopping off an entire arm just because the finger tip is rotting.

There are lessons to learn from the simplicity of the insect’s social, but we shouldn’t need to sacrifice our humanity either.

> they do seem to look down on humanity as well.

I still don’t see how this point is different from saying bees look down on humans everytime they retaliate.

> The fixation on conservation of resources and recycling did produce a paradise on Frontier when it was in its prime, and despite the artificiality it certainly is a better place to live than in many parts of the world.

Funny that Alto didn’t seem to share your sentiment here. No matter how “complete” MF seemed to be, it was nothing compared to an open, limitless sky.

His smile over the sky of the Vajra planet radiates joy of freedom; however, only mirk of contempt was on his face every time he saw the glass ceiling on Frontier.

> If you sing some where out there some one will listen. Question is will the size of the crowd matter? For Sheryl it didn’t …

Hmm… I hope this also hold true for blogging. *sob*

> Where as Minmei did contribute a lot to the salvation of the human race, Ranka demolished nearly two whole fleets with her singing.

But you must also agree that she was the key that turned the tide in the last episode. Had she not started singing, the entire MF would’ve been royally f*cked by Grace who then will go on to f*ck the rest of the universe.

> Thus I suspect that Kawamori’s treatment of Ranka was much more than a budgeting decision.

I kind of disagree with this. At this point, I’m still trying to decipher why Kawamori showed the scene of Bilrer looking into a picture of Minmei. If we promote the theory that Bilrer=Kawamori the way Ikari=Anno in EVA, then your comparison of Ranka with Minmei makes Ranka the most important character, at least in Kawamori’s eye for making MF.

I thought the mecha action was still good certainly better done than some other aspects of the show.

@Shippoyasha
I think that Alto-hime was fairly well done.

@Magnus
No, not for Sheryl but one last ode to my Alto-hime.

@darkplataform
Try looking at the Animesuki forums.

@bakaneko
I was being sarcastic Ranka won’t be able to turn thngs around for another decade. besides she has to grow up all over again, by that time I am sure my Alto-hime and Sheryl will be expecting. ;)
Episode 25 was basically supposed to be the grandest Mecha battle we have ever seen to date, in light of this it was rather foolish and shortsighted to think that some uber Ranka development was in the works. Much of it had already been resolved Grace was the big bad the Vajra somehow being baited into killing NUNS. We got the cursory answers we needed not much lost there only Ranka’s new Jesus powers were the only legitimate gripe, but if that means more mecha battle time, then hey what is one more awful moment where Ranka’s character takes another hit?

Prince Ali can easily match the awesomeness of the 2.25 Macross battle by tearing CB to shreds and violating Louise and killing Saji like he killed Kinue.

Had Ranka had some spine there would not have been a need for her to save the day. It was not Ranka salvation but more of Ranka’s apology, let’s not forget how this fucktastrophe happened in the first place.

Kawamori has been harassed by questions of Minmei’s fate ever since DYRL ended, it was troll plain and simple there was not much else to it. Kawamori’s in series avatar was that director who was incidentally Alto-hime’s #1 fan. Given how Kawamori really gave Ranka the shaft it seems hard to believe that he has that kind of sentimentality for her.

All Sheryl and Basara can say to your blogging doubts is, “READ MY POST!”

@Blist

@bakaneko: Someone in Macross World pointed out that Mr. Bilrer is the representation of EVERY Macross Fan, an otaku of sorts who collects Macross-related materials (i.e. 1/60 valks & other figures, books & magazines, music, etc., etc.), and who will forever seek information on what has happened to Minmei and the rest of Megaroad. :D

Lets face it Mr. Bilrer is the ultimate Macross Fanboy, who runs a P.M.C., owns a transforming warship complete with top of the line valkyries and destroids, AND is looking for a way to see Minmei again. :D

When Bilrer closed the ring that contained the picture of Minmei, Shoji Kawamori was in effect telling Macross Fans that: “Yes guys & gals I know you want to see her one more for that alone I thank you, but please let it go that’s a closed chapter already.”

@Crusader
Wouldn’t that be “ORE/ATASHI NO POST WO MITE?”

Anyway, I just finished a weekend marathon of the the original Macross (plus DYRL) and I just realized that Frontier has alot more small hidden homages/references/parallelisms with the original that most of us realized. I’m hoping you find the time to watch it yourself to do a retro post on it (but only after 7).

Also, while Alto can be dense, Hikaru at times was just plain insensitive. Meanwhile, I couldn’t help but notice how Minmay and Ranka seem to be so much alike. You could almost say that (as much as the other Frontier characters borrowed from characters from the original) Ranka was patterned after Minmay to a fault. Meanwhile Sheryl, who early on some had pegged as a DYRL Minmay analogue started growing as her own character early on. Here’s hoping that the Superdimension Cinderella gains some more development in the movie, lest she gets told off by Kaifun (which is what happened to Minmay in SDFM).

@grss1982
More than just closing the book on Minmay, if you take that scene with the director’s speech in episode 10, Kawamori may be trying to say that it’s time for a new legend, that of Sakura-hime Sheryl and Ranka.

d3v added these pithy words on Oct 05 08 at 7:35 pm

Crusader, thank you for blogging this show and such an in-depth review! I just finished rewatching the whole series myself as well, and just noticed one thing. Poor Ranka not only get little to no character development, she got short-changed on the dance choreography department as well. I could count only ONE dance routine for her for the entire show, while Sheryl got different (albeit some are only slightly) dance choreography for all her songs. I think it’s the same dance for Ranka in Miss Macross contest, Forma mall live, and Seikan Hikou. (The hospital one is slightly different, tho, and the one where she just stands or sits still. Should I have counted Lion and the giant holographic Ranka?)

However, after watching the show again, I could not help but question about the triangle being resolved. By all counts I think Alto have picked Sheryl, but I don’t know if everyone else have realized it. I mean, all the bad flying and wings metaphor made it confusing. Hell, I think Sheryl stopped Alto from confessing because she was not sure what answer she was going to get, even at the dressing room. However, I’m sure Alto have already chosen and he’ll be happy as Sheryl’s Waifu.

Lastly, I didn’t like Sheryl at all at the beginning of the show, but as her character developed, she started to grow on me. At the end, I became a Sheryl fan. :) At the same time, to parallel d3v, I thought Sheryl was going to be the Minmei of Macross Frontier. With the appearance and how Ranka really was a carbon copy of Minmei, I stopped comparing Sheryl to Minmei. However at the second watching, I found that perhaps while Ranka is copy of Minmei, Sheryl is the continuation of Minmei. Sheryl is at the top of her fame (like Minmei at the end of the series), and the series shows her growth from just a spoiled deva to a some who lives for her art. Over analyzing perhaps, but I think that runs parallel with the original, just as the difference in growth in Misa and Minmei’s characters.

@grss1982: Thanks! That makes much sense now. :)

P.S. Have you looked up the plot for “Sakura-hime Azuma Bunsho”? There are some analysis at Macross World forum about the similarity between Alto and Sakura-hime and killed her lover, but since I can’t find any full synopsis online, I should not comment too much on it.

Here’s some food for thought. There’s word going around that Sheryl was supposed to only be a minor character. Surprising when you consider that her and Grace just about stole the show.

d3v added these pithy words on Oct 05 08 at 11:17 pm

I kind of doubt that Sheryl was ever supposed to be a minor character.. if you look at the credits, she’s always either #2 or #3, just below Alto- and towards the end she was consistently #2. (I think this is probably quite significant for anime in hierarchy conscious Japan..)

Aine added these pithy words on Oct 06 08 at 6:21 am

Great post. It’s great to see some Sheryl x Alto love because Sheryl was serious hated on because Ranka was the more popular moe choice. That’s wrong people. Wrong. It was nice to see someone analyze their relationship so thoroughly.

Fang-tan added these pithy words on Oct 06 08 at 9:16 pm

@Aine
I mean in pre-production, when the series was still in planning. I think it’s in an interview with Kawamori somewhere that the original triangle was supposed to be 2 guys and 1 girl, however the Sheryl character just grew as the treatment was developed.
