VS

EPIC END! I demand that we have no more of these blasphemous demands for RankaxAlto-hime. It’s not that I love Ranka less, but by Kadun! I prayed and Kawamori is going to deliver. Fucking Battle Galaxy vs. Battle Frontier, DO WANT! YES WE CAN!

So yeah I want that RankaxAlto-hime ship scuttled and torched, screw that and I mean it! I will not forgive Ranka for trying to explain her actions as it means robbing time away from the best mecha fight of the year, Battle Frontier vs. Battle Galaxy, may Macross Quarter jump in as well, Kawamori be praised! Any one who wants the Ranka ship now is no Macross fan they deserve to rot in Minmei hell for their insolence for hoping for an ass pull at the expense of what may well be the best mecha fight of the year. We can either choose to watch transforming kilometer long capital ships slugging it out or Ranka going “Alto-kun save me”… The choice is clear! Ranka you better save yourself anything less would mean despoiling the hopes and dreams of every Macross fan that ever was and ever shall be. We live to see mecha battles; Kawamori has shown us Battle Galaxy! If Ranka so much as tries to steal one second then she will be more hated than SDFM Minmei. Oh I cannot wait for next week it’s agonizing, well played Kawamori thanks for trolling psgels for daring to suggest the Great Kawamori had a ho hum end planned. Well played, well played…(Thank you comrade psgels for taking the hit and goading Kawamori)

The time for cowardice has come to an end. Save yourself or risk being destroyed when the Battle Frontier does a Daedalus Attack.

It seems that it was no joke when we were talking about Ranka’s fleet killing powers. Ranka really did kill the 117th Fleet, probably in some vain attempt to kill Grace on behalf of Ranshe no doubt. Sadly the final tally of collateral damage was nearly the entire 117th Fleet sans a few dozen survivors. Ranka now under the full weight of her own guilt decides to protect the bugs by slaughtering Frontier which has come to fight in one desperate bid to secure a planet to ensure their survival. SMS has been snooping around, likely at Bilrer’s insistence, and find evidence linking Ranka to Vajra and dug up some good dirt on Grace. Given how Ozma and Cathy were only looking at Leon as the big bad I am sure Bilrer had a hand in telling the Pirates of Quarter where to go since Ozma would have never thought that Grace was the real threat and would have instead tried to get at Leon. Like Ozma said he is an idiot for not noticing Grace when she used her real name and boldly walked on to Frontier jumped onto the air waves. Ozma has much to be embarrassed about since Grace was everywhere and she even took over Ranka’s management. Good going Ozma, thank goodness Bilrer is the one calling the shots.

Heck even Mr. Bilrer has a special someone, the mushy old Zentran.

It seems that comrade Haesslich was mostly right in that Grace wants to control the communication lines to secure her Cylon Empire that will be enforced by the might of the Vajra. The pirates realize that Grace intends to make them all her cylon servants and send out a warning to NUNS, but given how they never invested in Grace’s tech, fold lag means that they will have to act and act quick. Frontier in the mean time prepares for battle, Luca confesses to a comatose Nanase, Klein onee-chan mourns the loss of Mikhail, and Alto-hime tells Sheryl that hime can no longer fly alone and that hime wants to fly with her. Sheryl, under the mistaken impression that Alto-hime will go back to Ranka, and Sheryl tells hime to shut up and kiss her. Sheryl then gives hime her last earring, which Alto-hime very much enjoys. It was very much YAKK DECULTURE! My Alto-hime promises to come back for Sheryl and sets off. The battle begins in with Sheryl’s “Iteza☆Gogo Kuji Don’t be late,” but things go bad once Ranka steps in with her “Ai Oboete Imasu ka ~ bless the little queen” under the guise of Sharon Apple. Under the influence of Ranka the Vajra continue to slaughter the Frontier fleet while allowing Grace’s commandos on the Dulfim pass by. Grace sets off to claim her throne as Brera beats both Alto-hime and Klein onee-chan. Not content with just defeating his arch nemesis Brera also shoots down Alto-hime’s VF-171EX as Sheryl cries out hime’s name in anguish. Ranka however held aloft the flaming wreckage for all to see in a sign of her current level of affection for Alto-hime.

Wow Maruyama Kakizaki really does look like Kakizaki. Mein Kadun Alto-hime has a bunch of underlings ready to fight for their taicho-hime.

So yes aside from that epic preview of Battle Galaxy this episode was everything a Macross fan could want, love is in the air as Frontier makes one last sortie to save its citizens. Confessions are given, love runs amok, and my Alto-hime has reaffirmed his resolve to stay by Sheryl and that hime will return to her. The strength of Ai Ai Alto-hime has swelled, as there is no shortage of pilots willing to fight under the inspired leadership of Diamond Force’s Machida, and Taicho-hime, those who have criticized my Alto-hime have decided to cower in shelters, I say let them! Like Ranka they know nothing of duty or freedom, they are merely protected, ignore their base accusations towards my Alto-hime. Not only has hime made good on his promise to be with Sheryl, but hime has also made good on his word fire on Ranka, and protect volk and fatherland. Sadly the power of Ranka “Fleet Killer” Lee was too much and the Frontier fleet suffered the loss of two islands and numerous capital ships and fighters. Ranka can now never be forgiven by the fleet, not only did she abandon them, but now she is actively aiding the Vajra enemy in sinking more islands and more of the Fleet in her heart broken state. Clearly the Vajra and Ranka intend to finish the job they started in 21…so much for Ranka’s claims to want love and peace. The only peace she wants is a debris field made up of bits of the entire Frontier Fleet.

Oh Ranka why must you emulate the losers in love of the Macross universe? Well at least you beat out Sharon Apple as most dangerous giant singer.

Ranka did not even so much as lift a finger against Grace and everyone paid dearly for Ranka’s compliance to Graces whims. To be fair Brera was telling Ranka to do bad things, but that conversely shows how much Ranka loves her onii-chan rather than her old fans and friends. Not even Alto-hime getting shot down and supposedly exploding phased Ranka one bit, rather she opened up her arms making it seem as if she had just crushed Alto-hime to death. Perhaps Ranka did not intend to crush hime, but it is most evil of Ranka to be spreading out Alto-hime to the far reaches of the Galaxy and help realize Brera-nii’s boast of scattering Alto-hime’s throughout the galaxy. Oh, Ranka, so much for your ship, there just isn’t that much time now, and I want to see more of Battle Galaxy than another go Ninjin Loves You Yeah. Such a pity Ranka opted to stay catatonic the whole time…now that every one knows that Ranka is singing for the Vajra I think she just forfeited her chance of being that silhouette that will be projecting on Battle Frontier. No, it will be Basara, Alto-hime, or Bilrer and Tokugawa-san who will do something to save the Frontier. As for Ranka after seeing her Sharon Apple projection prompting devastating salvos that death for numerous humans and zentrans, there is no one left on Frontier that would not shoot her the first chance they get. Such a pity Ranka now has earned the eternal hatred of Frontier. Ranka better hope that those two islands Ranka just helped blow away were really empty. If the Vajra start attacking Island 1 well not even the Pirates of Quarter are guaranteed to help. I can’t see the logic behind atoning for the destruction of one fleet with the massacre of another, but hey Ranka what ever makes you feel better about I guess…

Now at the end do you realize…

As I said before Alto-hime was just great this time around hime kept his work and led his army of grunts into the fray. Where once Alto-hime was doing things largely solo now we see hime taking car of his vic and fighting alongside Klein onee-chan to fight Brera. I like how hime went to promise Sheryl that hime will come back for her, it’s pretty much a confession at this point since its so late in the series and the Ranka ship deserves to sink since she spent more time dallying with Brera-nii than she ever spent with Alto-hime. Now that Battle Galaxy is going to enter the fray Alto-hime will have more to worry about than saving Ranka. My Alto-hime is a hime of his word if hime says he will come back for Sheryl hime will come back for her. Reports of hime’s death have been greatly exaggerated Alto-hime had plenty of time to get out of his VF-171EX to decoy Brera in order to save hime’s Klein onee-chan. In fact I look forward to more blue haired alliance action between Klein onee-chan and imouto-hime. Thus there is another reason why the Ranka ship must sink; any Macross fan would scuttle that decrepit ship in order to have a Valkyrie fight back to back with Queadaluun.

Klan onee-chan will protect her imouto-hime to the death!

Alto-hime has become a responsible adult now with responsibilities hime did not even look sad when he saw Ranka, only utter shock and disgust at the sight of her Sharon Apple cosplay and unfathomable RAGE as hime saw Ranka’s new friends wiping out the Frontier Fleet as Ranka sang about love. So much for Ranka’s love for her former friends, now that she has made clear that Ranka “loves” Frontier to bits, hime will also “love” Ranka into nothingness. Alto-hime was once tasked with protecting Ranka, but now like a real man and not just some hot blooded old timer past his prime, Alto-hime has decided that the Fleet is worth more than Ranka and hime rejected Ozma and any plans and pleas to save Ranka. Clearly the Kamejin Clone has had a bigger influence on Alto-hime than Ranka ever did. Hime is still out to kill bugs, and even if Quarter comes back with evidence the hard feelings will remain. At least now Ranzo is proud of his Kabuki-hime as he smiled as hime went off to destroy Ranka.

RANKA!

Sheryl was spectacular once again, not only does she try to take her heart break like a woman, Sheryl also gives Alto-hime a clear go and gave hime the last of her luck so that hime might go on. Silly Sheryl Alto-hime will come back to you no matter what, and that is more than can be said for Ranka. Alto-hime said that he no longer wants to fly alone, and hime chose to take Sheryl’s earring with him in a grand gesture of affection (not as a means to get a full set of some fabulous earrings) in a bit of black humor. For most of the series Alto-hime has tried in vain to assert that he is a man, but when hime saw Sheryl one last time Alto let Sheryl make hime more girly and deculture. Heck not even Ranka could get hime to act like a girl to get a bit role, so I think by wearing that earring Alto-hime is making a grand gesture. Most tellingly of all was how Alto-hime chose to fly with Sheryl’s earring and song, while hime is flying against Ranka and the power of her song. To add to Alto-hime’s barrage of grand gestures hime even took the call sign of Sagittarius 1. Silly Sheryl my Alto-hime has chosen to fly with you that was supposed to be a confession, but if you want to wait hime will wait.

Sheryl is Basra and cemented it by leaping down onto her stage. By Kadun Sheryl is most worthy of my Alto-hime’s hand! Not only does she suck it up and sing for the fleet but showed much more concern about Alto-hime than Ranka who appeared to have crushed Alto-hime. Truly the remark that such a woman is rare applies to both of them equally. My Alto-hime has finally realized it and for the first time in a long time became more girly for Sheryl. Ai Ai Alto-hime appreciates Sheryl for giving hime her remaining precious fold quartz earring, it looks so yakk deculture. I am sure Sheryl agrees… Good to see that Sheryl has some fight still left in her and she did not stop singing even when Ranka’s song just blew her and the whole fleet away. Maybe Sheryl will get some more power out of her feelings of a love lost. Like Elmo says Sheryl’s songs have love in them while right now Ranka’s are just soulless and without real love.

Listen to my SONG!

The rest of SMS is doing okay and the Bilrer was most wise in sending them off to dig up some dirt on Grace. I bet that projection will be the honorable Mr. Bilrer himself as he announces that Leon is a traitor in cahoots with the criminal Grace. General Perry will then summarily execute Leon, because having the bridge of Battle Frontier blown away by Ranka or Quarter would suck when there is still Battle Galaxy to fight. Monica finally gets her man, as Cathy and Ozma grow a bit closer. Good thing Alto-hime kept “Dead Meat” Jones and Maruyama Kakizaki (who looks just like Kakizaki) alive so that Mina and Ram might also find some nice boys. Seeing as how there is little hope for reinforcement and that since Grace is very much in command the only way Quarter can have a shot at doing anything to make up for their desertion is to help Bilrer take Leon down and get the Frontier Fleet back in shape for the epic match between Battle Frontier and Battle Galaxy. So don’t screw it up Ozma, you will still have to answer for your poor parenting skills…

Well idiots like Ozma will always be around, bt it’s a good thing that this idiot has a Cathy Glass.

Klein onee-chan did not die and helped out her imoutos, Alto-hime and Nene nicely. Even if Mikhail is gone Klein one-chan still has a reason to live so that she might take care of Nene and Alto-hime. Luca gets some action too the little Knight Templar. Even if Luca discarded his SMS uniform and joined Leon to kill more bugs I think that so long as Luca can kill more of the bugs that hut his beloved Nanase then he won’t mind if General Perry shoots Leon in the face. Thank goodness Luca only stole a kiss from Nanase, at least he didn’t go Shinji on us. The battle was good an not ho hum, in fact this was a very good tip of the hat by Kawamori and his crew to Macross II with dueling songstresses. I also liked how hime was only complaining internally about his VF-171EX as his vic just flew there in awe. Glad to see that Ai Ai Alto-hime has grown so large on Frontier, and now that Alto-hime has Sheryl’s earring we are one step closer to a Kabuki-hime end. I am sure Maruyama Kakizaki, “Dead Meat” Jones, Machida, and the rest of the Frontier chapter of Ai Ai Alto-hime will be looking forward to seeing Kabuki-hime come onto Battle Frontier kiss Sheryl and sing Enka to defeat Grace and her Ranka puppet. The finishing blow will be Sakura-hime Azuma Bunsho. Then and only then will Ranka snap out of it since Alto-hime “dying” was insufficient to bring her back to reality, or we can have Sheryl slap Ranka again.

Grace will surpass Morgoth!

Grace was just awesome she swore her revenge and is getting it. Oberst Grace is truly the greatest villain of the season, she has fold bombed a planet, wiped out a Zentradi division, taken over one of the most advanced fleets in human, and is about to seize the throne of her galactic empire that makes ever other empire look like a small hovel. Ranka tried to kill Grace with bugs and flame, but that was not enough to stop almighty Grace. Not only has Grace avenged her self on Mao and Ranshe, she has set their descendants on a collision course. The name of Mei will forever be associated with the massacre of fleets while the blood of the Nome family will be all but spent unless Alto-hime and Sheryl make a little queen of their own. No doubt Bilrer has been aware of Grace for some time and has done his home work the showdown between the Zentradi Billionaire and the Greatest Cylon to ever end up in a Macross series are about to have an epic match. Grace seems to have forgotten about Bilrer in her seizure of the throne, but Bilrer has not forgotten Grace, perhaps at last there is one who can go toe to toe with Grace.

Good to see that Nene did not die so far, I hope she finds a nice boy too…

All in all a great episode which makes me eagerly anticipate the finale which can do no wrong so long as they have Battle Frontier in a slugging match with Battle Galaxy. By Kadun I think Kawamori is going to over awe us all. I hope Machida makes it out okay, awesome grunt is awesome.

Ozma saw his home blow up and he cowered in fear…

Well what were you going to do about it?

You should have asked Mr. Bilrer, but sadly the boss man trusts hime more than some guy who ditched his fleet to save his own ass. As if saving Ranka would have washed away the stain of your cowardice…

Man even Wilder is thick, does he even have to ask?

Monica got her good end!

Wow Frontier boasts a fine share of MILFs.

Well that’s one down, all Bobby has to to now is marry off her other two kids.

General Perry supports Suki Suki Sheryl.

Now that is a good role model, such a pity Ranka never took a liking to Klan onee-chan, Ranka must have felt treatened by another loli hanging around Alto-hime or something.

Luca is a coward.

Well maybe next time you can say it to her when she is awake, eh?

At least it’s only a kiss, such a pity the Prince of LAI cannot awaken his princess.

To confess.

My Alto-hime will survive.

Mission Accepted.

Oh a flying analogy…

Should have just said you wanted to fly with her…

I think Sheryl ahs come to a wrong conclusion…

Look who’s talking.

So…?

Don’t get cocky your not being very clear because your flying analogy sucked.

How about simple statement one whose meaning hits with the force of a fold bomb?

Oh Alto-hime was paying attention when Sheryl said that…

Wait-

I told you Alto-hime that you should have gone with something simple, but no it had to be a flying confession…

Yes, keep it simple.

Well if Alto-hime didn’t like Sheryl in that way he sure does enjoy standing there with Sheryl’s lips on his…

Yeah shut up and kiss her again!

Uh Sheryl…

Look I know its confusing, but Alto-hime has always loved the sky and he wants to fly with you…

Oi oi, Sheryl Nome can’t help but sing like Hime cannot help but fly.

Well, shut up and kiss her Alto-hime…

It seems My alto-hime is about as thick as Sheryl right now, must they do everything together…

Now Alto-hime has a real reason to come back. If hime wants to confess properly then hime can do it after killing some bugs.

Nani mai hunni?

Were it so easy…

Second chance!

Wow…

You want to see Sakura-hime?

Sheryl wink!

In any case Alto-hime is proud of Sheryl.

YAKKKK DECULTURE!

Sakura-hime end is a GOOOOOOO!

All wings report in…

Machida in “Fists of Fury”

I like this job. I like it.

Capital ship charge!

Go Machida!

Saggittarius 1 standing by…

You worry about those bugs, I’ll worry about Brera.

I am going in, cover me Kakizaki.

Saggitarius 1 get set up for your attack run…

I’ll cut across Ranka’s axis and try to draw her fire…

Today Luca finally got his first confirmed kill…

That’s taicho-hime to you.

Only if you make them your enemy…

Kill Alto…

You have to do better Ranka. I’m over here.

It seems the Perry Brothers are not taking kindly to Ranka’s treachery.

I just want my phone call.

Ranka’s love beams…

With love like that who needs hate?

I am Alto Saotome, I am here to avenge my colony.

Grace is so awesome she snuck in a Dulfim in the middle of a fire fight.

Grace will violate you…

Yes, my Queen.

The Royalty commands!

Not exactly the way to refer to the person you might be in love with…

Yeah why?

Nothing says I love you like wearing the other girl’s earring and actually getting more femminine when you could not even do that to get you favorite girl a bit role…

Ranka will give Alto-hime the thrill and death hime always wanted…

Were it so easy to forget such a hime…

Still pretty when mad?

Brera-nii sayeth so!

It cam from…behind…

Sheryl cares…

Klan onee-chan cares…

Heck even Luca cares…

…and yet here is Ranka spreading out hime’s ashes, just like Brera wanted.

Well next time hime comes back you won’t be so coy.

Alto-hime will be fine, but that should help motivate Alto-hime to survive.

also, I have this feeling that Lynn Minmay will appear in the END. hehehe…. XD

thanks:)

I kinda noticed that the mirror during the scene of Alto and Sheryl is the same one in the OP. I wonder if that has any significance.

Lets have some fun killing bugs. Oh next episode, the spoilers tell us about some angry bugs. Repeat of ep 21, but proper genocide. Yay Alto is dead.

Cherubium added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 5:49 am

1 - Maybe one of the best chapters. Now I am convinced that the character development of Grace is inspired on the personality of Kawamori himself.

2 - Well… Alto death looks as a fact, but I have 2 reasons for believe that is alive. First the earring of fold quartz that allowed Alto to see Ranka being keeped under restrains and second that now Alto can have a good excuse for be rescued by SMS and use the VF-25 Messiah.

3 - I never espected Bilrer having the wish to meet someone. I wonder if is Ranka’s mother.

Normally, I want to stay cool, collected and fair in my ideas of what is happening, but today I can hold it back no longer.

RANKA, U HAS SUCKZ!

Helping the Vajra is no excuse, even if under the insidious influence of Grace. She is trying to keep Hime and Sheryl apart, hell no!

Sagittarius added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 6:19 am

(facepalm) I cannot believe so many people on so many different websites really believe Alto is dead. Hey, you guys, I got this *fabulous* bridge in San Francisco I can sell you….

@Crusader: You did get that Mao is Sheryls grandma, didn´t you? ^^ That is what that picture floating in space was shown for.

Magnus added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 6:28 am

Good write up. Funny. On Alto’s hesitation and Sheryl thick headed-ness, they both will be the death of us all. It’s a clear case of an unstoppable force meeting an unmovable object. *sigh*

Though on the note of Ranka not caring or knowing or anything. She was kind of in a dream state followed by a hypnosis mind screw state. What she sees is not necessarily what everyone else is seeing. As evidence from this screen shot. Things look odd in the fold network space. So it’s possible she has no clue that her actions are actually killing humans or more specifically that her actions led to Alto’s “perceived” death.

For some reason, I expected Admiral Ackbar to suddenly appear and yell “It’s a trap!”

Suffice to say, anyone who isn’t broken by this point is either blind or is in serious denial.

this ep was grrrreat! but i really wonder if Alto’s ear was pre-pierced as he never had earrings, unlike Bobby… *horrible mental imagery of Sheryl lovingly stabbing an earring into his earlobe*

LukerJay added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 8:22 am

I’m glad Alto is dead, at least for the moment.

He really has been one of the most boring and uninteresting male leads in Macross History.

This series really should’ve had Ozma Lee: Man of Action, Man of Passion as the male lead character. Alto is more like the Macross Version of Shinji Ikari. Average piloting skills, lukewarm social skills. It’s a wonder how he survived as long as he did.

I feel bad for Sheryl. Afflicted with a terminal disease, soldiering on for the sake of humanity and all she wants is to enjoy her remaining time with Alto by her side and she’s robbed of that as well.

I wish Nene had more screentime. Ventradi women are deliciously delicious.

Halcyon added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 8:29 am

“Alto is more like the Macross Version of Shinji Ikari.”

Now that’s just silly, just because he is undecided in his love means he is a pathetic worm who is scared to fight for the ones he cares for? Please. Shinji did that, we all saw it in End of Eva when Asuka was being slaughtered and all Shinji did was cry.

Also, what’s this about average skill? What about when he went head to head with Ozma and came out even,with Ozma commenting on his improvement, he is now a squad leader in the NUNS with several underlings who praise his piloting skills. Its only his rival is a cyborg with a superior machine.

Alto, he is ready to dive into enemy territory for the people he cares for. He is far from a Shinji. I just hate people who randomly assign characters to be like Shinji when things are not even remotely similar.

Besides, we’ve already had an Ozma-like character for a lead in Macross 7 and Macross Plus, or did you miss that?

to the tune of Too Late Baby:
Flying in a VF-171EX just to pass the time

There’s something wrong here

There can be no denying

One of us is Vajra

And now Frontier is dying

And it’s too late Ranka

Now it’s too late

Though we really did try to make it

Too many now have died

I can hide from Brera

but I just can’t fake it

Wo no no no…

It used to be so easy flying just for you

You made a paper airplane

And I knew just what to do

Now you look so Vajra

And I feel like a fool

And it’s too late Ranka

Now it’s too late

Though we really did try to make it

Something inside has died

I can hide from Brera

but I just can’t fake love

Next Ep there’ll be a time just for me and you

But we just can’t stay together

Don’t you feel it too

Still I’m glad for what we had

And how I think I liked you

And it’s too late Ranka

Now it’s too late

Now I’m wearing Sheryl’s fold quartz

Something inside has died

I can hide from Brera

but I just can’t be his brother in law

Too late, you big baby, it’s too late

Ranka, it’s too late

“Well, shut up and kiss her Alto-hime…”
My thoughts exactly.

And can’t wait for next episode, I hope it ends well for ALL of us. >.> Alto will end up with Sheryl, of course.

Ranka will win. I’m sure.

LDC added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 10:15 am

Alto is definately not Shinji. He shows resolve far beyond Shinji’s and to be honest, I don’t even know where that comparison came from. At all. He’s also definately not dead, being the main character and all. At least, permanently.

skoll added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 10:19 am

LDC you’re in la-la land. There’s no build up for a Ranka x Alto ending. None.

JustinStrife added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 10:28 am

Don’t worry, LDC is in the same mind screw mental fold network space as Ranka right now. I’m sure Grace is whispering naughty things in his/her ears right now. ;)

Kilroy0097 added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 11:25 am

“Now that’s just silly, just because he is undecided in his love means he is a pathetic worm who is scared to fight for the ones he cares for? Please. Shinji did that, we all saw it in End of Eva when Asuka was being slaughtered and all Shinji did was cry.”

They’re both ineffectual lead characters who’ve gotten by on the strength of their machines rather than their own skill.

“Also, what’s this about average skill? What about when he went head to head with Ozma and came out even,with Ozma commenting on his improvement, he is now a squad leader in the NUNS with several underlings who praise his piloting skills. Its only his rival is a cyborg with a superior machine.”

Just because he’s improved, doesn’t mean he’s better than average. It means he’s no longer a novice or an amateur pilot like he was when he joined SMS. That’s what Ozma is complimenting him on. The fact that he’s a ’squad leader’ is because 80% of the SMS fled with Ozma, leaving a massive shortage in seasoned and experienced pilots. Have you ever seen Starship Troopers? Know why Rico gets promoted so many times? Because every one of his superiors winds up dying.

“Alto, he is ready to dive into enemy territory for the people he cares for. He is far from a Shinji. I just hate people who randomly assign characters to be like Shinji when things are not even remotely similar.”

He’s the Shinji of Macross. He’s an emotional cripple who can’t do anything on his own. Alto reacts to his environment instead of making choices for himself so much so that even Ozma pointed out that Ranka had the courage to make a decision while Alto wallows in self-doubt.

“Besides, we’ve already had an Ozma-like character for a lead in Macross 7 and Macross Plus, or did you miss that?”

No I haven’t seen Macross 7. I don’t really care for outdated anime.

Halcyon added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 11:28 am

Ranka “Fleet Killer” Lee

That is so unbelievably awesome and true at the same time.

Speaking of Shinji, actually I see Luca as the Shinji of the group. He was totally ready to fap on comatose Nanase too (while Jesus-Ranka looked on).

That postcard shot you had reminds me that we do not know about Sheryl’s mom. What happened? How did Sheryl survive, and did Grace track Sheryl down because Sheryl had a V-type infection from the attack? It’s ironic that Ranka rose to fame playing the young version of Sheryl’s grandmother…

Kabitzin added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 12:13 pm

I dunno, situation looked pretty grim for Alto… Plus, it would be a cliche to have him just appear dead. Perhaps knowing that she killed her “love” would snap Ranka out of it.

And Sheryl will eventually meet with Hime in heaven and play Classical Gas and Gordon Lightfoot for him for all eternity.

Andrew added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 2:18 pm

“Alto reacts to his environment instead of making choices for himself so much so that even Ozma pointed out that Ranka had the courage to make a decision while Alto wallows in self-doubt.”

Did you not watch the last few episodes, yes it was mentioned Alto only lived in the flow of events. But with this episode Alto had full resolve to do what he must to defend his home and the one he loves. Thats hardly Shinji like at all. And whats this wallowing in self doubt about? If anything that’s what Sheryl and Ranka have been doing. Ranka being used by Grace because she can’t get over the fact she killed everyone or Sheryl’s insecurities about where Alto’s love lies. Compared to them, Alto has a much firmer resolve.

“I don’t really care for outdated anime.”

Oh wow. Now you’re just trolling. Evangelion aired just a year after Macross 7. That’s hardly “outdated” and Macross Plus is of the same age.

@Andrew

Realizing of course that knowing she killed her mother snapped Ranka into this. Some people just don’t respond to the Kamina Grill-Punch. It seems Ranka is one of those people.

Kill it with Nth-Dimensional space-time fluctuations. It’s the only way to be sure.

Wow. I’ve turned against Ranka. Guess I draw the line at PC-killing/genocide-on-purpose. Then again, Ranka probably doesn’t know it’s do-or-die for Frontier. What with her skipping out as fast as she could rather than stay to get bummed out by the aftermath of the ‘Aimo’ disaster. So that she didn’t get bummed out by the aftermath of the ‘Aimo’ disaster.

Good ‘ole Ranka.

“Did you not watch the last few episodes, yes it was mentioned Alto only lived in the flow of events. But with this episode Alto had full resolve to do what he must to defend his home and the one he loves. Thats hardly Shinji like at all.”

No, he’s pretty much just doing what he’s been told to do by President Leon who can be thought of as a surrogate Gendo. In the end, Alto is just following orders. That’s pretty Shinji-like, imo. Alto doesn’t fight because he chooses to, it’s because he has to. If he doesn’t fight, he and the rest of the frontier fleet will be destroyed by the Vajra. The only ‘real’ decision Alto has made was to kill Ranka if she was being used by the Vajra, which he recanted on as soon as Sheryl influenced him to save her instead.

Sounds pretty wishy-washy to me.

“And whats this wallowing in self doubt about? If anything that’s what Sheryl and Ranka have been doing.”

When push came to shove Sheryl took the stage, forsaking her own feelings for the betterment of the Fleet and the people. Sheryl has constantly put the safety of the fleet above her own interests. She may be insecure but to say that she ‘wallows in self-doubt’ is just pure fallacy.

“Ranka being used by Grace because she can’t get over the fact she killed everyone or Sheryl’s insecurities about where Alto’s love lies.”

loll what? When did Ranka ‘kill’ anyone? And when did she express remorse of any of the ‘deaths’ she’s caused? Ranka is just tired of being used as a weapon (eventhough the dumb broad CHOSE to be used as a weapon because she wanted to be useful to the fleet and to Alto).

“Compared to them, Alto has a much firmer resolve.”

The only time Alto has shown resolve is when another character (mostly Sheryl) has slapped some sense into him. Alto has no motivation of his own. He is a character entirely influenced by his surroundings. If you watch the entire series why did he join the SMS in the first place? Because of Ranka. Why did he become a pilot? Because of his mother. Why did he choose to stay behind with the Macross Fronter fleet? Because of Sheryl. Alto has done nothing for himself the entire series. He is essentially a Momma’s boy. Just, like, Shinji Ikari.

While they may not be 100% similar, they do share SOME similarities which is why I said he’s the *Macross Version* of Shinji Ikari.

“Oh wow. Now you’re just trolling. Evangelion aired just a year after Macross 7. That’s hardly “outdated” and Macross Plus is of the same age.”

Uhhh.. Macross 7 finished airing in 1995. Evangelion finished airing in 1996. You have your dates mixed up. Either way, that’s over a decade ago. IDK about you but that’s pretty outdated by today’s standards. kthx for playing.

Halcyon added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 4:07 pm

… y’all laughed when I said that Grace and her Galaxy group wanted control of all of known space through the Vajra. Well, who’s laughing now? Grace sure is. My Cylon Queen knew better than the rest of y’all.

Now.. Ranka has NOT grown up at all. Thank you, Ozma, for spoiling her so much that she never grew a spine. Even Luca got one, as little and hateful a spine as it may be for him to confess to a comatose girl who can’t even hear him one episode before the end of the show. But here? No spine, no sense of self - she’s just going along with the flow, but this time for nii-san’s sake. And so, however many thousands of people have died on those two islands which got blown up by the Vajra, not to mention the hundreds in various capital ships that caught Vajra beams.

Kilroy: Do you know the difference between premeditated murder and murder without premeditation? It’s only whether you get a death sentence or multiple life sentences, depending on what government you’re under. Not that the victims or the families and friends of the dead can really tell the difference - dead is dead, whether you were murdered because I was consciously wanting you dead or because I was in a daze and shooting you and your friends dead. It’s not an excuse, especially since she had gone out there to establish PEACE between humans and Vajra. She’s forgotten that, and she’s not under hypnosis - she’s just going along passively, and no longer cares whether people live or die… an extension of the whole “I wish I and everyone else” was dead wish of Episode 21. She’s definitely aware of the attack, which is why she’s singing for the Vajra and watching through the VajraNET as they kill Valkyries. She can’t fail to recognize THOSE, given that her nii-san brought her here in one. She’s definitely not catatonic - she’s responding to the world around her, and unlike Brera she’s not a cyborg so mind-control isn’t built in. This is plain old convincing the idiot to go along with whatever you want her to do… and it’s working.

Halcyon: I’d say Alto’s more of a very passive Hikaru or Gamlin than a Shinji Ikari. That title would be more fitting for Ranka, who… well, both are childish and whiny and make you want to strangle them when they do things that get other people hurt because they don’t want to act. But that description’s not fair to Shinji either, since he had periods where he could be quite resolute and useful - once he’d made a decision to act, like in Magmadiver when he rescued Asuka or when he went batshit insane in order to run back to the HQ to get into Unit 01 and stop Zeruel in episode 19.

Now Ranka, on the other hand, just ran away from things… and she didn’t really decide anything in the end. She’s just going along with the flow, even more so than Alto is here. Why else do you think she’s making amends for killing her mother’s fleet and friends by killing the fleet she grew up in?

Kabitzin: If you’ll remember Ep 22, Luca notes that Sheryl got infected ten years ago, which was a year AFTER the 117th got destroyed by Ranka, and had grown up in Galaxy’s slums. Grace implied in Episode 18 that she’s the one who gave Sheryl the V-type infection: ‘oh, you were in the hospital a long time after I found you, weren’t you?’, in order to have a test subject for controlling Vajra.

I love how everyone reacted to Alto’s apparent death - Luca’s shocked, Sheryl’s horrified, and Ranka doesn’t give a shit. Here’s hoping Grace rubs her nose in the fact that it happened and what Ranka’s doing. If that doesn’t snap her out of it… nothing will.

Halcyon: Why do you think I want Grace to rub Ranka’s nose in what she’s done? For more batshit insane hot Cylon scientist action, of course. Plus, we get Evil Kikuko Inoue voice that way… an experience I shall savor as much as Evil Tanaka Rie.

Way to go, Ranka. Bring out more evil in Grace while making the same fucking mistake over and over again. Keep at it - you might level Grace’s Power and Conquest while you’re at it! Certainly your bosom brings nothing but despair and nightmares at this point…

“Songstress of Hope”, indeed. Man, I bet she killed a bunch of businesses who overpurchased Ranka merchandise.

Haesslich added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 4:48 pm

@Haesslich,

Remember a few episodes back when Sheryl’s CDs were discounted by 35-50%? Payback’s a bitch. You can’t GIVE away Ranka CDs now. Nobody wants them and the Vajra can’t afford the Ipods to play them.

Little green-haired mini-Joker got owned.

Halcyon added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 4:51 pm

You know what’d be fun? Having Nanase wake up, look out the window, and see Songstress Ranka singing for the Vajra, with ships blowing up around her. Imagine the breakage in Nanase’s mind, and Luca’s reaction… I guess maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to ‘overthrow Sheryl’ after all.

Haesslich added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 6:01 pm

@rollchan
No it will be Basara-sama he’s the only one who hasn’t been referenced as overtly yet.

@Cherubium
No Alto-hime will live because Klan onee-chan did not give hime permission to die.

@mareo
I hope that instead of fold quartz miracle that instead it will be something more mundane.

@Sagittarius
Indeed and Grace did not even have to use implants to get Ranka to dance to her tune.

@Magnus
Indeed the blood of a hero flows through Sheryl, but she has not avenged herself on the tormentor of her family yet…

@Kilroy0097
Perhaps, but Ranka is aware of the fact that she is helping the bugs who killed off the 117th Fleet and nearly did the same to Frontier. Not all that excusable in any case. Ranka did not put up any resistance at all, so it seems that she gave up before she even saw Grace.

@d3v
The blood of meltrans flows strongly in Alto-hime, I like Alto-hime more this way when hime is taking on the role of Sheryl’s lover, so yuri, well almost…

@LukerJay
I would not be surprised if Alto-hime had pierced ears for his kabuki roles, judging how Alto-hime often played the lead it’s not a stretch that they went all out costume wise, with earrings and all.

@Halcyon
I share the sentiment that right now it is Ranka who is closer to Shinji, than Alto-hime, I repect a man who fights no matter his reasons, every one in SMS had their reasons for fighting, at least Alto-hiime is not rejecting his duty and cowering in fear, or otherwise misbehaving before the enemy. Ozma got bad ass after all of his buddies jot juiced by the bugs, and ALto-hime did give Ozma a good run in his vastly inferior VF-171EX.

There are no super pilots, only veterans, heck 11 years ago Ozma did not stay and fight, he fled the battle and saved his own hide while the rest of the fleet was torn to pieces. At least Alto-hime’s resolve to fight until he can fight no more is apparent rather than Ozma the younger wet his flight suit when the cap ships started sinking. As a soldier you are expected to follow your orders and since a lot of people did not know about Leon since no one outside of Ozma’s inner circle knows the truth with the rest deciding to follow Wilder to the gates of hell. Not all the best pilots fled with SMS, Klan, stayed and Machida and Diamond Force stayed to protect Frontier along with the other 30% of SMS.

Being a Shinji means giving up as the world burns all around you, it means to cower when you still have the power to fight back. Alto-hime is very much in the vein of Hikaru only that when it comes to love Alto-hime is thick, as opposed to Hikaru who had a never ending stream of complaints about being a conscript. being average is not a bad thing, an average pilot is better than an incompetent one. Hell most pilots of the premier Air Forces are pretty average with only a few aces ever being made. For every Chuck Yeager there are a hundred johnny next doors who’s names will not go down in history but whose contributions are collectively more important than a single ace. One of the reasons why the Allies had better pilots later in the war than Germany was because their aces were sent back to training a bunch of average blokes rather than screw the average blokes and sent the aces off on sorties until they got killed as was the case with the Luftwaffe.

There is nothing wrong with being average, there is something wrong with being below average. Besides if there was no base line then Ozma would not be as cool as he is if every one on Frontier was an ace.

Lastly old shit is still cool By Kadun I still love Escaflowne and Crest of the Stars.

@Kraker2k
Indeed, Alto-hime is not a coward who flees with a full mag and a working mecha.

@vjean
It’s just too late… ;)
@Hoshi
Let’s hope net time it will be different.

@LDC
Considering the amount of time needed to redeem Ranka, I have to go with Battle Frontier vs. Battle galaxy instead, Ranka must lose, my inner mecha fan demands it.

@skoll
Indeed My Alto-hime will defend his fatherland until death, which is much more than can be said of Shinji who put himself before the world.

@JustinStrife
Well there was some build up but I think that Ai-kun ate it… ;)
@Kilroy0097
Queen Grace will take Alto-hime for herself, since being the intergalactic despot does have its share of perks…

@Kabitzin
Luca did man up though in the end and actually killed something for once.

I am sure grace is enjoying her delicious revenge on Ranshe and Mao, Ranshe’s kids are her puppets while Mao’s grand daughter is slowly dying and will now try and avenge her Alto-hime.

@Andrew
Considering how Ranka has been so far I don’t think Alto-hime dying would have mch of an affect Ranka did after all look uninterested in hime’s destruction, though she might have been a bit malicious in trolling the same scene that we saw in the first OP.

@jack
Perhaps Ranka doesn’t know, but it could also be that Ranka no longer cares or can no longer show affection to other people other than Brera.

@Haesslich
Glad you were right, and how!

Sad to say that I agree with you that Luca has grown more of a spine than Ranka, at least the Prince of LAI was actively trying to impress Nanase and get in her pants, instead of waiting for Nanase to come to him. At least Luca has done everything possible to save the fleet, building fold bombs, making super jump tech, MDE warheads, and the like. Luca is making a positive scientific contribution to the war effort even if his attempts to engage the enemy have thus far failed. Sad to see that grace did not even need to tamper with Ranka physically. Now Grace’s revenge will be complete if she steals Alto-hime from Sheryl and lords it over Ranka.

Ozma has much to answer for first he let his old fleet get obliterated, and now he has sown the seeds of another fleet’s destruction. Way to go Ozma, no matter how much of a man he is right now it seems that his manly life story is one of catastrophe and fleet killing.

You forgot the Klan onee-chan was crying out fore her imouto-hime. I hope that hime will survive to fight back to back with Klan onee-chan, it be fabulous if Klan uses her damaged Queadluun to take hime back to hime’s VF-25, I doubt hime would take kindly to being carried by Ozma or even Luca. Nene however is acceptable, and indeed much desired if Klan onee-chan is otherwise occupied.

Ranka just didn’t give a shit she also malevolently spread out her arms to symbolically scatter hime to the ends of the universe before the whole fleet and Sheryl.

As for Nanase waking up in time to regret overthrowing Sheryl, maybe she will poke out her other eye to avoid seeing Ranka slaughter Frontier. Grace probably had this as part of her plan for great revenge on Ranshe.

Ranka is 2059’s version of Hitler, except she is exterminating humanity, one fleet at a time. I hate her sooo much, I hate her more than the Protodeviln Gavil and his phrase “ah the beauty of (fill in the blank)”.

As much as I want Alto to die so by default everyone can kill Ranka, I doubt he died. His VF-171 flew around for too long before it exploded. He probably is on that wrecked ARMD getting his hands on another valkyrie

I wasnt even paying attention and tought it was a VF-27 but after paying close attention again and noticing the rail guns on the shoulders I almost got a heart attack. There is a Battle Galaxy and fuuuck I am scared for Battle Frontier. This is going to be one epic battle

I need Macross Frontier OST2 asap!! Crusader I dont know how I am going be able to adjust living without looking foward to a frontier episode and a review from you.

Luke added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 7:57 pm

Luke: You didn’t have to invoke Godwin’s Law here. And Hitler was using the Holocaust as a scapegoat for the problems the Germans had with their economy going to shit after the Allies gutted it but failed to put in anything positive to replace it, sorta like how the Afghans drove out Soviet forces with American help but then were left to fend for themselves… which let the Taliban establish control, and former insurgents who worked with the CIA ended up working with them and al-Qaida in order to provoke another conflict.

Ranka’s just a stupid kid who lets herself get used, and doesn’t seem to care about very much besides ‘me’ as if she were a four year old. Even with the destruction of the 117th, she wasn’t worried so much about ‘thousands dead’ as ‘Mom! Brother!’ - the deaths which directly affected her. If she wasn’t so self-absorbed, she could have at least tried to stand up to everyone every time she’s told to do something she doesn’t like. She could’ve actually stuck to her plan to ‘create peace’ instead of merely going along with Brera-remote Grace’s plan to ‘kill the enemy’ even though she CAME from that fleet. Hell, if she was that upset about the 117th’s sinking being her fault, then why’s she passively going along and sinking Frontier? Because it’s the right thing to do? She didn’t think back when she asked Alto to join her in her runaway to the Vajra fleet, didn’t think about how the Vajra may not have been in a mood to listen to her (as Ai-kun proved when his eyes went red), and isn’t thinking here as she sings for Nii-san and reenacts the Sinking of the 117th Fleet.

Haesslich added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 8:32 pm

Oh my… I dont think that Alto is going to get a fold quartz miracle, I never said that, if my words imply that I apology. Is more like the earring thing is like the VF-25. Their are the reasons, not the means why I think Alto cant die yet. The earing allow some kind of link with Ranka so there is a chance of Alto making somehow a contact with Ranka. If Alto die now, I think that is going to be a pretty bad ending for the character. Fans are asking for a good final showdown betwen Alto and Brera. Dye when killig Ranka or acoplish the promise to come back to Sheril. But the worst is die without telling who he love. Die with these unfinished business is not very satisfactory. Is possible that he is dead, but I bet my money that he is not, just because the scene have the same ambiguous feeling of the “censored kiss” in the chapter 22. It looks like, but… With Kawamori is better not jump to conclusion until we dont see a military funeral. Just like is better not say that the triangle is over until Alto make a clear declaration to one of the girls.

I doubt he will though…

@Luke
Ranka is not Hitler not by a long shot, Ranka is a tool.

In any case Battle Frontier vs Battle Galaxy will be epic…

@Haesslich
I would not say that Germany’s problems were entirely economic, but rather I think the depression was not mitigated by a strong government response. The thing about the Weimar years was that there were numerous armed factions all vying for political power. Hindenberg was already senile with his ministers all plotting to kill one another. The Reichswehr was largely faithful to it’s policy of being a state within a state and just sat on the sidelines as armed gangs battled one another. The economic woes were not exclusive to Germany, but the political turmoil and a standing army that was contemptuous of the political system made things much easier for Adolf. So long as the NDSAP played by he rules Adolf did not have to worry about the Heer crushing his little movement, in which case there were many who were keen on crushing the little corporal.

Yeah the Ranka that sank the 117th Fleet is little different from the Ranka that is helping the bugs blast Frontier to bits. Just once more I would like to see her be a bit more selfless and not be a little girl that responds to attention. If nothing else Ranka can just either save herself and grow up or sit idle on the sidelines to await rescue after Battle Frontier and Battle Galaxy have a slugging match.

In any case do you think Queen Grace will go to her final battle in a VF-27 or as Battle Galaxy? At least Grace had to try and dig at Sheryl a bit to break here down, this time Grace did not even have to try. At least with Sheryl she tried to fight back and tell Grace to bugger off even if it meant getting overpowered in a heartbeat.

@mareo
Well Alto-hime has already lost one of those earrings, i am sure hime is not keen on losing another.

Crusader added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 9:40 pm

it makes me wonder what exactly the trigger was to make Ranka’s brain go all squashy. was it being grabbed by Ai-Kun, or finding out that Brera was really her brother, or being overwhelmed by the sheer awesomeness of Cylon Grace?

but either way, a very satisfying ending would be to have Sheryl give Ranka one more good slap. after the huge capital ship duel of course ;)

LurkerJay added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 10:24 pm

The Weimar Republic didn’t help matters, but they weren’t the ones who voted the Nationalist Socialists into power. The economic issues left over from the Treaty of Versailles, on top of the whole insult to German pride, gave the people a lot of discontent. The fact the Weimar Republic was like a government run by clowns kept anything from being done, humiliated the German populace with their ineptness, and also let the economy run to a stand-still because they were too busy arguing and trading votes to make any decisions.

And THAT was what Hitler needed to gain popular support, the sort of thing which socialist revoltionaries like Mao and Castro, or Lenin before him, used to gain the material support as well as the popular backing required to make changes to government until the people were a non-factor. On top of this, his targeting various groups as scapegoats helped him focus the German populace on specific short-term goals that allowed him to consolidate political and military power as well as keeping them busy building the military machine he required to start kicking at the doors of Western Europe.

And Queen Grace is too smart to charge into battle like a Gundam pilot - she’s more likely to move Galaxy and Brera against Frontier, or let the Dulfim’s Special Ops crew destroy Battle Frontier’s ability to respond. Which conveniently leaves the Frontier’s Special Operations group, the SMS, available to do other things.

Lurker: The trigger was that she’s found out that she’s an idiot, and can’t cope with it. On the one hand, she feels guilty that she sunk the 117th, but then on the other she’s unwilling to ACT for herself again. She did it once, but now has regressed back to the way she was at the beginning of the show - a spoiled child who goes along with whatever brother says.

Haesslich added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 10:36 pm

@LurkeJay
At this point it has to be a punch in the gut.

@Haesslich
I think the the Weimar republic deserves more credit for at least keeping things running during those hard years, a lesser democracy would have been rocked by coup after coup, and it was not a putsch or a military coup that brought down the republic. They were not clowns, and if they were Hitler would not have had to assassinate men like Schleicher. To be fair the Wiemar Republic suffered almost every problem imaginable since its inception, but nevertheless it was able to prevent any one group for dominating all of Germany, even Adolf had to play fair and weasel his way into Hindenburg’s good graces. It was not ineptitude that kept things from getting done fast, but rather the fractious nature of a populace that was not accustomed to democracy, given how both the radical left and right were armed and had no love for democracy it is a miracle that they survived as long as they did. While Hindenburg had Stresemann things did at least go well in terms of settling the old grievances of the Treaty of Versailles without resorting to violence, things were getting better from 1923-1929. The economy was showing signs of recovery, the last Allied troops had left, and Germany was rehabilitated as a state that could more evenly negotiate with former Allied powers.

National pride is one thing but let’s not forget the weakness of their patriotism is the populace spent more time killing each other than the French across the border. Germany would have lost the war and the Treaty of Versailles did little to help but there was a period of recovery that ended with 1929 Crash. The myth of betrayal was still very much alive and used by both right and left for political gain. Under a stronger Hindenburg things were kept at least orderly but since there was no one in any position to replace him once senility set in rats like Papen and Adolf were able to deceive the old man. The National Socialists were already losing a significant amount of popular support after 1932 (they suffered a loss of 5% of the vote), Papen and the conservatives brought them in under the mistaken assumption that the NDSAP could be controlled and its SA element dissolved. It was Papen who did things out of expediency that let the Corporal get into power, even in his senility Hindenburg refused to appoint him chancellor until Papen and his son hounded him until he did. There was never a shortage of talent, but there was a huge shortfall in overall vision that led to it’s eventual collapse under legal means.

There was never any overwhelming support for the NDSAP in 1932 and Papen had to beg Hindenburg to make Adolf Chancellor after the crusty old veteran took an immediate disliking to that arrogant corporal from Austria. At their height the NDSAP only had 37% of the vote, and had Papen not gotten his way it is possible that the NDSAP would have faded into obscurity given how Hindenburg and the Reichswehr were contemptuous of those SA Rowdies and the Austrian Corporal. Papen opened the door for Adolf after Hindenburg had slammed the door in his face. That is something we tend to forget. Hindenburg was the essentially the Weimar Republic from 1925 to 1934, at least during that time no fringe group ever got their agendas through and from 1933 to 1934 even Adolf did not have the balls to try anything against the old man because even in his senility Hindenburg never did like him. Had Hindenburg wanted to he could have sacked Adolf and crushed the NDSAP as the Reichswehr was loyal to Hindenburg and not the corporal. thus Adolf had the good sense to keep Papen alive to cover his ass in the event the old man decided to get sore and punch Adolf through a podium.

Poverty and destitution did not unify the Germans behind the NDSAP in 1932, but after 1934 no one was left who could challenge them, other than the military that refused to dirty its hands in political matters. The Weimar Republic survived numerous putsches and attempted communist revolutions during a long period of instability, that is at least a testament to some strength that it did possess if only because it’s death was through legal channels and not through a blood soaked conflict that marks the demise of most other failed democracies.

Hmm…I am still hoping that Grace for some reason does pit Battle Galaxy against Battle Frontier, then at least we can see what General Perry is made of after he shoots Leon in the face. I am still hoping for Grace to beat the crap out of Ozma in a VF-27, she could still do it by remote control…

Crusader added these pithy words on Sep 21 08 at 11:43 pm

I think that is more like Ranka has regressed back to the way she was before the pineapple cake time. After 117th fleet incident, the shock of be responsible of many deaths, triggered partial amnesia and deep apathy. Ozma can be not the best replacement for a father, but for someone that tried to atone for the failure to protect the fleet, he worked very hard for heal the catanic only other know survivor into the cute girl that made Alto join the SMS and figth the Vajra. These time her mental state is so fragile and so suggestible, that if Grace tell to she that the only way to atone for so many deaths is commit suicide, I think that she can do it without many doubts. Regreet is just another reason for a possible Ranka-Vajra suicide ending.

mareo added these pithy words on Sep 22 08 at 1:45 am

Ranka is indeed an idiot, I never believed that she was responsible for the death of Michael since at that point nobody besides Grace was aware that her emo-singing could end up in a massacre. However, after that she has been a disappointment, she fulfils the Murphy law, every taken decision has been the wrong decision. Many say that it is an improvement that she now is capable to take her own decision and praise the fact that she became a little bit more proactive. Well I agree, it is to be praised, however many forget that such commendable behaviour comes also with more responsibility, it is simple, if you take a decision then you are responsible for the outcome. That, at least, is my understanding.

From my point of view, she eloped with Brera because at that point the story he was the only one willing to follow her like a puppy, she never requested the opinion of other more experienced people not even Brera’s. Big mistake, first strike.

After that, she decided to merrily take a galactic walk with Ai-kun… in the middle of a Battle, what are you thinking? Oh Ranka-chan, second strike.

Finally, she DECIDED to defend the Vajra planet without a thought, probably she is seeing only ill-natured Kaduns, but please, she should know that those malignant Kaduns are piloted by men. For somebody who seeks galactic peace, it should be an epic failed. Ranka-chan you are out.

I think it is obvious for most of us, that Ranka is going to wake up and somehow to help in the Battle. However, in all honestly, I do not know if she will remain sane after knowing that she directly or indirectly has helped to kill many Vajra and human lives. Probably, I wouldn’t. From my perspective, Ranka’s good end would be to remain sane and/or to forget, this independently of the resolution of the triangle.

At this point, I would like to stress that I’m a Sheryl fan, thought I tried to remain neutral up to this point. To be honest I hate this so-called shipping-war, it can be entertaining but must of the time is only annoying. Anyway, before I continue I wanted to make you know.

For the triangle, captain obvious says that the coin is still in the air, SK and the writers have been very clever with the dialogues and scenes. I think that it is still 50/50, only because it is not in our hands the resolution of the triangle. I expect that Sheryl ends with Alto together, but if this is not the case then she should die singing her hearth out. Alternatively, since she is a Nome she can call a horde of Birdmen and give us a godly Tominos’ end, I wouldn’t mind.

For Grace, if there is some divine justice, neither Alto nor Ozma should deliver the finishing blow. Sheryl deserves that honour, Grace pretty much ruined her life. At his point, I have to agree with some Ranka-fans. Sheryl is not the protagonist of this show and has been up to now irrelevant for the general development of the events of Macross. However, it is difficult for me to believe that she won’t, at least in the last episode. This belief is based on the almost confirmed fact that she is a Nome. If you watched M0, you should remember that the Nome sisters were genetically superior and full of well… anime-magic. On the other hand, maybe the Nome are damned with a Kadun for breaking the blood rule. I only long for a more active role for Sheryl in the events of MF. With respect of the first point (Ranka being the protagonist), I would like also to note, that in Tim Burton’s Batman, the protagonist is, well, Batman, thought, the people remember the Joker :p.

I apologize if the structure of the text and/or the text is too confusing. Unfortunately, I have not enough time to read-proof the text and sorry for the rant.
Disclaimer: I do not believe that my opinion is absolute, indeed, what I express here is only my personal opinion based on my personal interpretation of the events in Macross.

@Crusader

Ranka can’t be Shinji because she’s not A. A male lead or B. A pilot.

Ozma got bad ass after all of his buddies jot juiced by the bugs, and ALto-hime did give Ozma a good run in his vastly inferior VF-171EX.

Ozma wasn’t really fighting to kill. He was just trying to buy some time for the Macross Quarter to escape. I’m sure if Ozma fought at 100% instead of 60% Alto would’ve been space dust.

There are no super pilots, only veterans, heck 11 years ago Ozma did not stay and fight, he fled the battle and saved his own hide while the rest of the fleet was torn to pieces.

Not true! He saved Ranka’s hide also.

Not all the best pilots fled with SMS, Klan, stayed and Machida and Diamond Force stayed to protect Frontier along with the other 30% of SMS.

You have to admit, if 80% of your fighting force deserts. That leaves a lot of openings for Promotions.

There is nothing wrong with being average, there is something wrong with being below average. Besides if there was no base line then Ozma would not be as cool as he is if every one on Frontier was an ace.

There’s nothing wrong with being average if you’re a side character, sure. But being the main character and you have mediocre skills? Helllllllllllllllllll yeah. The main character is supposed to be the top of the food chain or grow from the bottom to be at the top. Alto’s still somewhere in the middle and this is at the END of the series. C’mon now. Seriously.

Lastly old shit is still cool By Kadun I still love Escaflowne and Crest of the Stars.

It might be cool, doesn’t mean it isn’t outdated though.

Crusader:

actually, amend that ending to this:
Sheryl giving stoner-Ranka a black eye, then beating an EMP-crippled Grace with her guitar…

@Halcyon
Even Hikaru wasn’t much of an ace pilot in SDFM and DYRL. It was always Max that was the genius (no pun intended). He earned his position/rank through hard work. Remember kids, this is Macross, where in the battle to save the remnants of humanity from the largest invasion force they had ever seen, the lead character was almost shot down and eventually did nothing except rescue one single person.

@LurkerJay
Not just with her guitar but with the power of Song Energy as she counter’s Ranka’s Ai Oboete Imasu Ka with her own rendition of that rock classic Try Again!

Just rewatched ep. 24 and I just realized that after he gets lipped on the wing and he flies around the dead Guantanamo, Alto is never shown in cockpit again until he’s shot down. So is this a clue that Alto somehow got away and is possibly piloting the VF-171EX by remote?

Geh, internet connection screwing up, wasn’t able to edit in time.

Anyway, I was going to post a theoretical ending which would parallel the ending of Macross 7 with Sheryl, Alto and Ranka playing the roles of Basara, Sivil and Geppelnitch, but then I realized I already did make one.

Ranka will probably have a happy ending as having it otherwise is just plain character murder, which I think isn’t good for the story.
She will likely redeem herself in a sensible manner, or to be kinder to her, just lose her memory.

At the end of everything she is going to have more than just guilt to worry about. That or everyone forgives her for helping the Vajra kill off frontier troops. Her character may not ultimately be even seen in a negative light. That’s anime for you.

…. my thoughts?… Alto’s conscience survives through the fold crystal network…

and lets face it people, there is no other song suitable for singing to protect a planet… couldn’t stop grinning when Ranka started singing

and i still believe Ranka will prevail at the end… that or die like Puru2

“For the triangle, captain obvious says that the coin is still in the air, SK and the writers have been very clever with the dialogues and scenes. I think that it is still 50/50, only because it is not in our hands the resolution of the triangle. I expect that Sheryl ends with Alto together, but if this is not the case then she should die singing her hearth out. Alternatively, since she is a Nome she can call a horde of Birdmen and give us a godly Tominos’ end, I wouldn’t mind.”

@pato
I think the same way…
Ranka singing Do you remember love…mmm…the Lynn Minmei version was better…coz of the epic sounds…

Look the lyrics of this song, the words are beautiful, i dont think, in the situation the triangle is, is suited for Ranka or Sheryl…but the feeling is closer to Sheryl…

@Magnus: Yeah, Alto can’t be dead. The Anime Rule Regarding Main Character Deaths in an Explosion states that they’re not dead unless you see their body disintegrating as the screen turns white. Otherwise they either escaped right before and received minimal damage or they’re mortally wounded but will stay alive long enough to finish one last task.

@Lukerjay: I’d bet her earrings are clip-ons. While it may be somewhat possible for an earring in a pierced ear to fall off while flying around (ep1), I’d be really surprised if Alto just sat there while Sheryl punched a hole in his ear herself. And I’m pretty sure Kabuki onnagata (men who specialize in female roles) have no need for earrings since their wig always covers their ears anyways.

Anyone have any idea why Grace says “There’s no song more appropriate for the guardian of this planet” when Ranka is singing DYRL? I originally thought that she was talking about the original singer of the song Lynn Minmay, who had disappeared along with the entire SDF-2 Megaroad-01 in 2012, until it showed what appears to be a Bird-Human a la Macross Zero. So now I’m just confused. Any thoughts?

Gender and profession are irrelevant if you can’t do the job you signed up for then you aren’t worth your rations, hell by merely existing such a person is just stealing resources that could be put to better use by someone else who is willing to do the same job.

Ozma was shooting to kill, it’s not like Ozma was firing off those missiles at Luca for shits and giggles, hell if Alto-hime had not intervened Luca would be space dust. This is not super robot series man, Ozma was shooting to kill because this was a battle. If Ozma is only giving 60% he has no right to fight, hell I would never fight with such a man. Kind-hearted people might of course think there was some ingenious way to disarm or defeat the enemy without too much bloodshed, and might imagine this is the true goal of the art of war. Pleasant as it sounds, it is a fallacy that must be exposed: war is such a dangerous business that the mistakes which come from kindness are the very worst.

Good for Ozma if saving the future fleet killer is his form of paltry atonement for running away and leaving the hundreds of thousands of others to die. In a way since Ozma rescued the little fifth column and spoiled her silly, he does bear a lot of blame for what has happened. Ozma was not only a coward,, but and inept parent as well.

The pirates of Quarter hardly make up 80% of Frontier’s fighting strength, hell they are merely one ship in a vast armada, don’t be so sure of your vaunted 80% heck only 70% of SMS went with Wilder, and NUNS still boasts greater power because they are the hammer of the fleet. SMS was a scalpel which would not be suited for taking on a pitched battle on its own. Leon was going to integrate SMS with the rest of NUNS, NUNS remained loyal there was not a vast opening up of positions Leon was going to break them up and send them off to various units within NUNS. I don’t think you understand how huge NUNS is and how small SMS really in in comparison SMS only has one cap ship while NUNS boasts a huge number of fighters and capital ships. To say that Alto-hime got his new job because there was a shortage of people is a lie.

This is Macross where the heroes are average, Isamu was not kicking Guld’s ass, Hikaru was not the best pilot on SDF Macross, Shin was getting beaten by Nora, and Alto-hime is not better than Brera or Ozma. Since you will never revisit the older series I don’t think you fully appreciate how in Macross the male lead is never Mr. Badass Ace. If you wanted a super robot series or a Gundam series you have looked int eh wrong place Macross has never had the Ace of Aces be t
