My friend also recalls following it avidly when he was younger and still living in his native Japan. GaoGaiGar was released shortly after Transformers Generation One, and ostensibly builds on a lot of the elements that Transformers developed (i.e. transforming and recombining mecha), but also incorporates other aspects that make the episodes very enriching, kind of like Transformers x Gundam or somesuch. The meticulous designs of the animators who did not have computer-aided animation at their command really make an impact here, in the form/construction of the robots, crazy transformation sequences, and the creative angles explored as a means to perpetuate the illusion and majesty of movement within expanse. I truly believe that many older mecha titles retain formidable visual appeal because they were the fruits of animators' infatuation with technical details; actually, I'm considering exploring this topic in a future editorial about how modern mecha design has gravitated more towards an "organic" feel. While it may be an acquired taste for fans of newer animation (and an easy win for nostalgic people like myself), GaoGaiGar is definitely the Golden Age of Mecha at its best.
