Well, I’m nervous…very nervous…I’m not going to fail again…
YES! This is Reverse Vampire (In real life) taking the most important exam of her life. The Piano Grade 8 ABRSM Practical examination. I’m not going to fail this time, and it takes perseverance and hard work (Using some of your brain power too.) to come this far. It’s been two years since I last took a music examination, and don’t you think it will be easy playing the piano to reach this level just by looking at anime that concerns music (eg. Nodame Cantabile, La Corda D’Oro etc). It takes years to build up skill, I start taking piano when I was about 5. So playing music is easier said than done (Or should be easier to looked/hear than done.). This will determine my future, everything, or whatever important that concerns me.
And here, the real challenge comes in. Here I come, music examination~
P.S: I’ll be doing World Destruction episode 5 after the exams, or as soon as the subs are out.

That’s so cool! I wasn’t sure what lvl 8 entailed so I watched some vids on youtube – color me impressed because that’s pretty brutal stuff! Are you wanting to make music your career, is Juilliard or another conservatory in your future? Best of luck in the exam and be sure to tell us how it turns out!
Good luck – what’s the exam like?
Ooo I took this exam just May this year. I was sooo nervous too! Luckily I got out fine.. 121 XD Good luck man!
Hehe I’m taking my exam on September the 30th, and I’m extremely nervous because it’s less than 2 months from now, and I’ve barely shaped up my pieces, and still have much to be desired from my Aural and Sight Reading proficiencies T.T But good luck on your exam ^ . ^
It’s probably a tad late to say this, but looking at the Grade 8 syllabus, I wouldn’t sweat it. That’s about an RCM Grade 9 piano practical, but the fun stuff only begins if you go for your diploma. If you feel that playing all of Moonlight Sonata is fun, of course (I thought it was).
I don’t think it’s easy to play the piano at your level, but I wouldn’t count it as particularly complicated. You have your technique, at least a decent ear for those pitch/playback tests, some stage experience in the form of recitals or competitions. Playing for marks isn’t any different than playing for prizes, so keep that in mind.
Out of curiosity, just how long have you been playing piano? Lots of people start around 5 or 6, and advance about one grade per year, with a lot quitting around the age of 10 (or Grade 5 RCM from where I come from).
It’s just a saying, but I ought to add that, you don’t need luck to pass your exam. I don’t really believe that favourable probability is what causes a pianist to press all the right keys (plus pedal), with the right touch, at the right time. So rather than wishing you luck, I wish you success.
And don’t sweat it. That cannot be emphasized enough, regardless of your past attempt.
Good luck with this Reverse vampire! I know how hard getting that level 8 certificate is, and it took me 2 tries. Hopefully you’ll only need 2 tries too!
You said you’ve played since you were 5… how old are you now?
I don’t know how well you play but if you’re dedicated enough to even bother to do the level 8 exam then I’m sure you’ll pass – there aren’t any surprises now, are there.
Are you actually going for a career in music? Cuz most of my friends just got their level 8 thing and then quit, because they had other stuff to do…
No Transcendental Etudes? Che.
Best of (skill), though. Should we implore you to “break a leg?”
That’s awesome, seriously. I hope you wing it!
@Intro
But can you play it presto agitato? That is the question!
i tot Reverse Vampyr’s a boy, but a gal. i tot Impz is a gal, but is a boy.
heya, good luck on your piano exam.
I’m still in year 5 …
and good luck!!!
Best of luck to you ^^. I’m something of a musician myself (albeit self-taught and probably lacking the talent and polish of someone who started when she was five years old), so I would like to hear your playing some day! Can I find videos of this type of examination somewhere online to get an idea of what it is like?
@ Maipeisu: Apparently, musicians taking the exam are only allowed to bring their piano pieces into the examination room. All other devices should be taken outside. So you cannot do recordings inside the examination room. ABRSM are pretty strict about these kind of things. If not, go to any search engine and look about the procedure on a piano examination.
I sorta screw up, got too nervous while taking Aural and my 1st piece: Might as well kill myself…I really hope there’s a miracle that could save my life. And the others (Scales, other 2 pieces, Sight Reading), it should be fine. If only if I get used to the piano.
@ Black Cat: I’m not 20 yet. Unfortunately, my age is a secret. But it’s less than 20, trust me.
Oooh, 8th Grade.
Interestingly enough, in australia. the Highest is 8, and after that you’ll be qualified to teach students.
I guess its a different system over there.
However, i DO wish you best of luck in your exams ^_^
i remember how nerve wracking music exams are >_<
i for some odd reason felt more nervous in those than school exams, but thats probably because i had to perform.
However, i stopped playing the piano and started picking up the violin ^_^;;;
Well, best of luck to you.
Also lol @ my age is a secret (no offense meant).
I started piano in 8th grade and played through high school, after which I had to stop due to lack of time and resources
. I still remember taking the RCM grade 7 exam my last year of playing >_<. Definitely more nerve-wrecking than academic exams!
Best of luck to you!
I send positive thoughts your way.
I started at age 9, but each time I was due to be entered in for Grade 1, my teacher up and left to take another job and I got a new teacher who insisted on starting from scratch.
I got disillusioned and gave up, I figured it just wasn’t meant to be.
But, that is me this is you! I hope it goes well!
im taking my grade 8 exam on 15,8,2008 i am so nervous! my pieces are not so perfect my sight reading is horrible and i can’t sing during Aural. I don’t wan to retake the exam again. im so scared. Im taking ABRSM.. T.T
just stay focus when you are playing with the piano, and you get better when you have the effort to really be a good pianist.
