The Curse of Pineapples is Broken! Read no further if ye hath not seen this episode!
So it seems that for all of our idle chatting about what will happen after Ozma dies, Mr. Kawamori has been surfing the net and has been seething that we would dare think that he would do something so trite as to retread old ground. He did and then back handed just about everyone (any one who says other wise is a liar like Kabitzin…) by keeping Ozma alive. Truly Kawamori has balls the size of basketballs, for not only did Ozma live, Ozma even ate and baked some pineapples. Well played sir well played… Giving us a deluge of death flags and pineapples, only for Ozma to have his crowning moment of awesome and live to tell the tale; Mr. Kawamori has elected to rule his universe and how! So yes, it was an EPIC TROLL by Kawamori to pull the wool over our eyes, Many death flags were raised, but the spirit and voice of Kamina will not be silenced by a mere Mwu la Fraga moment (Okay so it really wasn’t the case given the same thing happened in Do You Remember Love, IIRC, but…I don’t think there are many who even saw DRYL.). So basically Ozma threw the mask into a dumpster and ate a whole pineapple cake and baked ten more, just to show how GAR and unkillable he is. If Ozma is going to die it will be for reals and in Ozma style. New temporary OP was a gift to every Ranka fan with kawaii new animation that made this blogger and probably many of you forgive the delay of the new OP (Ain’t that right Shin?). Again I think that Kawamori is a wily one.

Yes, Ozma living alone was fucking epic. Nevertheless, Ozma being the gentleman that he was shared the spotlight with a few others. Cathy for instance actually tried to marry an ambitious man, but it seems Lt. Glass likes bad boys, but not outright evil ones. I cringed when Cathy and Ozma were talking about pineapple cake, and about old times. Poor Cathy though has to wait until Ranka grows up and gets out of the house. Until then though she has no problem disciplining the local boys, ah, this brought back memories of Misa making life hard for Hikaru after the latter got out of line. Despite Alto-hime and Mikhail making snide remarks about how no man would want Cathy, Lt. Glass was more than ready to answer their insults. Suffice to say the Bridge Mom of Macross Quarter won the argument, just like all mothers. I don’t care what people say about Lt. Glass her hawtness just shot up when she took off her jacket and began beating on the two hot shot pilots. I don’t think Alto-hime and Mikhail will be saying bad things about their Bridge Mom ever again.

Luca is busy inserting himself into the Grace-Leon clique and thinks that Mr. Bilrer is after fold quartz so he can control all interstellar space travel. Somehow I don’t think Mr. Bilrer is in this for power, nice try though Luca. Not even Leon thinks that is the case and it seems that Grace and Leon are trying to win over Luca. I don’t think Luca has the evil and gall to betray Alto-hime, but if they start threatening Nanase things might get complicated… Nanase got a job supporting Ranka and hopefully she will remain innocuous enough to avoid Grace’s full attention. Klein-sama makes a come back by scoring a dayto with Mikhail. Sadly that lout was interested in some girl in the pharmacology department inciting Klein to get angry. While the name of this person is irrelevant what is important is that Klein is still going to school… I bet every one thinks she’s a genius if she goes to miclone school or freaking hawt if she goes to a Znetran/Meltran school. Still I want to see Klein-sama go to school I think that this is very important and warrants at least half an episode if not more. Well good to know that Mikhail is doing some digging of his own for the sake of Sheryl though I suspect that he and Luca will come to blows sooner or later. Leon and Grace seem to be getting very friendly and Grace is more modable than we could have possibly imagined.

Brera gets to run his mouth about how the Vajra will adapt to all their attacks and how soon SMS will be obsolete. While the Vajra have adapted it seems that like the Borg they still remain vulnerable to close combat attacks. Brera’s rifle is okay for now but on Frontier a knife with a lot of guts behind it is still a force to be reckoned with. I just loved how Ozma just told Brera to “STFU. I’ll protect my Ranka and my woman!” and did just that. It seems that Cathy is very impressed though Bobby didn’t look to happy seeing Cathy fangirl Ozma on the bridge. As I said before Kawamori gave us so much pineapple that I think he intended to drag our faces through the mud at our insolence at thinking that Ozma would die like Roy. I for one apologize to Mr. Kawamori and all of his team. So Mr. Kawamori, I, Crusader personally apologize for having the gall to think that your imagination was so limited and that you would cheapen Roy’s death by doing it again. Indeed I am not worthy or smart enough to divine your grand plans and will try not to question your trolling skills ever again. Please take me as your apprentice in the art of trolling. I liked how they sprinkled on some Fire Bomber to give Ozma a veneer of venerable old veteran, Fire bomber was good back in the days of yore though Basara was kind of hard to tolerate. It probably wasn’t easy learning to be a mother to Ranka in the wake of the 117th Research Fleet disaster. Truly Ozma is so GAR that he not only beat the pineapple curse but used it for cooking with an apron, I am sure Kamina would be damn proud of his spiritual younger brother.

On the Ranka front it seems that Ranka is still kind of a kid, but more disturbingly she is looking for the approval of others than making her own decisions. This to me is a sign of bad things to come Ranka has already had a run away hit with her first concert, but it’s episode 17 and she’s still leaning on others for acceptance and approval. It’s not very grown up by any means. Even if Brera is removed from the equation it seems Ai-kun is rip, ready, and roaring to tear Alto-hime apart by tearing up Alto-hime’s paper airplane in brutal manner. Still it seems that Ai-kun might have done this instinctively given how Valkyries and things that fly kill Vajra. More ominously it seems that Alto-hime isn’t keen on protecting Ai-kun either so there is some more bad blood for Ranka to over come. Ranka even defended Brera…I just hope Ranka starts looking for vindication from herself and starts making her own decisions before Grace, Leon, Brera, and possibly Ai-kun start deciding for her. It’s sad to see that Ranka has realized her dreams but built it on top of Elmo and to a degree Sheryl as well, and for her not to be stronger for it seems to indicate a more treacherous road ahead for Ranka. Soon she will have a legion of Ai-kuns to take care of and I have little doubt that all of them are willing to fight off Alto-hime and tear his precious VF-25 to shreds. There are 8-9 eps left, the clock is ticking and Ranka needs a critical upgrade in confidence and self esteem if she is going to beat off all the problems and obstacles.

Alto-hime doesn’t seem to be attracted to Ranka right now though it could be because he was fuming at Brera or miffed that Lt. Glass kicked his ass. Even during and after the beating it seems that Alto-hime has decided to forgive Sheryl for going onto the bridge. So in a sense he likes her enough to forgive that but not enough to insist that she stay somewhere and rest. I can’t believe Ranka let Alto-hime climb up to her room like that couldn’t she have given the poor Pilot-hime a rope or a ladder or something? While Kabuki-hime seems to be troubled over the initial realization that his weapons don’t work at least hime respects his flight leader to start usning knives. It also seems that Alto-hime has taken a liking to Mr. Bilrer’s dreams though hime is still treating the Vajra as an enemy that needs to be exterminated. This will probably not sit well with Ranka in the future. I am not even sure if hime is actually falling in love with Ranka as it seems the old brother sister dynamic has crept back in with Alto-hime seemingly just doting on Ranka rather than burning with passion every time he sees her. I guess if nothing else Alto-hime is willing to climb up walls to cheer Ranka on. Not sure how hime will handle Sheryl in the future though…

Sheryl stepped to the way side this time around as Sheryl has no connection with Ozma, however it seems that Sheryl is going to confront Grace. Judging by the preview it will not end well and Sheryl might very well end up wet when she next sees Alto-hime. I suspect that the next big fold will end up only worsening and already bad situation. Hopefully Sheryl will get out of her slump quickly Alto-hime is about to have way more problems, than just her.

@Crusader, I have to say I was totally shocked myself Ozma made it! I am also starting to worry about Mikhail’s future since he’s digging around to. But as you pointed out in a reply from the last episode, no confession, no death. So I’m holding onto the hope the since Klein hasn’t got her man YET, then he’s safe for now.
Has anyone been able to contact Impz since this episode aired? Or is he still in front of his computer replaying the scenes of the even more loli Ranka. :p

I am proud to admit that I was the first one going like “OZMA IS SO GONNA DIE AFTER that GAR speech he made”, because that is the cliche. As much as Macross Frontier throws in all the beautiful gimmicks that it has been showing us with glee, it remains a rather foolproof standard story plot. I didn’t expect them to pull a maximum anti-climax with him surviving, so kudos to them. Now, I am pretty damn sure that Ozma will never die because the GAR is with him.
I actually wonder where Cathy’s alliances lie now. It is decently clear that Cathy’s relationship with Leon feels to be a relationship of mutual usage, rather than one of true love. Well, perhaps the sex, but Leon looks so much like a dork head that I truly wonder if the sex will be good with him. Ozma, on the other hand, looks pretty ragged but …ermm i don’t know. Why in the world am I talking about this anyway.
I was so disappointed with Mikhail of sorts, since I really expected him to show some interest. Yes, Klein and him might make him look like a total paedophile, but love is great and he should sacrifice a little in the face of adversity and loliconism.

The only good thing about this episode is that we get to learn a little more about why Ranka is needed and we get to see LoliKlein pouting and blushing.
Other than that, it was pretty much a throw away episode, imo.

If your cockpit got damaged enough for shots to enter and hurt you, how the F%$( do you get out of your cockpit, change from space suit to uniform (or civilian cloths) and not bleed all over the place until hours later?
The first time I watched the Roy Folker death as a kid I didn’t understand it, and the Ozma injury makes even less sense. I’ve never had the pleasure of being shot by a bullet, or what ever the Vajra use as bullets, but I have a sneaking suspension that they cause immediate problems, not injury hours later.
