Most 'weeaboo' and 'otaku', would not even understand most of this article. Who was it written for? It sounds like you should be writing a thesis at Yale instead of a blog about anime fans...

What I want to see more of from Haruka is a little bit from what we saw in episode 3 (and briefly in episode 1): the treatment of otaku as demonstrated in Japan. Because when you look at it that way, you can also see it as some form of social commentary. I think to myself, "it shouldn't be like that", and it seems as if the anime is trying to portray that as well, so it's not criticizing Japanese otaku culture, but rather the response of society to that culture. And I think that could go places. But that sort of thing also doesn't seem to be the main focus here, especially since the otaku in this case is a "dream otaku", and in that the focus is less on highlighting the struggles that otaku had, and is more of something that pushes the right buttons for otaku. It was mentioned by cuchlann that Haruka seems to be straddling the line between those two factors, and frankly, I would like it if it tried to achieve both in one go. But it looks the show is leaning toward that "otaku fantasy" theme.

We have to wait and see where it goes from here. Though it definitely helps for me that I can listen to Ueda Kana along the way. :3

awayish: the position is pretty irrelevant.

issa-sa: it's so blatantly over-the-top stupid that I was like "damn".

Having only watched one episode of Haruka, it struck me more of "fan-pandering because we know it sells to the pander-ees and hence sell well" more than any form of critique of anime otaku culture. Though the latter intention may or may not come into play within the context of the series, the idea probably started out with the former notion and may eventually stray to the latter to a small extent.

my reactions by time:
t-00:01: Whoa, benedict anderson on animu blog? fuck yea
t-00:05: did i return my library books over the summer?
t-00:07: shit!
t-00:30: tenuous connection made between spatiotemporal continuity and community. superior would be to see animu as a part of life, rather than a fully bodied lifeworld
t-00:35: i still prefer more analytic stuff. universalizing abstractions are to be used with care.
t-01:00: as previously mentioned, a failure to establish animu's position within the larger culture and life is forcing the author to take the more tenuous route of trying to find structural isomorphisms across grouping phenomenons, without making substantial inroad to the interesting question of the position of animu itself.
t-01:30: i should watch strike witches again. that was hilarious
t-02:00: narutards are childish and full of teenager hormones. despise!
t-02:20: leftist animu? DO WANT!
t-02:40: should i watch this haruka thing?
t-02:42: lol no
t-03:00: hahaha marx quote in animu blog. capped and saved
t-03:10: that people are able to identify strongly with a certain hobby or cultural interest is an interesting fact in itself
t-03:12: eek cultural theory. not going over that again
