Actually, that WAS Aikido. I'm a practitioner, so I was squealing like a fangirl over how many elements from Xam'd I love.

BONES+Nausicaa+Aikido+Eureka7+steampunk+Ghibli vibe = Invariable awesomeness.

Judo, not Aikido. Judo involves getting a good hold of your opponent and disabling him/her through suppression moves or slams. It is an inherently non-aggressive, defensive martial arts, most suitable for smaller sized people. That was why Furuichi mentioned there's no winner in judo.

I liked this. For some reason, along with the Last Exile and Nausicaa vibes, I got a little bit of Vision of Escaflowne in there too. The beginning that is. The good part.

Jesus christ this was awesome. Already epic and I'm bubbling with preeminent fanboyism. Last Exile meets Eureka 7? I'll gladly accept. The soundtrack was beast. Scenery Porn? YES. I mean, god damn I loved the BGM.

Wait, the soundtrack was absent??? Ungh. There was a wide array of "archetypal" pieces on display:

0:30 - the classic, emotive straight up orchestral piece, I liked it.
6:15 - I don't know if that's just an acoustic guitar or what but with the congas (I don't think those are bongos) it does deliver an interesting, homely yet exotic sense. Helps to carry you into the alternate universe setting.
10:10 - same song
13:00 - same thing but the congas are in double time
14:09 - begins with some percussive instrument I don't know of, plus a bass drum. So far I like their use of percussion, as it gives you that militaristic, regimentalized feeling of the cold war state they were supposedly in.
15:29 - double harmonic minor scale on a viola is eerily reminiscent of Arabia. Nonetheless I like it in here.
16:35 - the bass notes on the piano come in right as the flight crew guy says "hull identification confirmed" so there's nice timing on that part. This is the obligatory "battle theme", or at least precursor to battle theme.
18:10 - "mysterious song" complete with weird synths and shit.
19:50 - recapitulating back to the idiom of the first BGM piece, the emotive orchestral device now with singing girl.

I liked the ED song but the OP was not my cup of tea.

Ex, I am so glad you are blogging this! I was very impressed with the first episode, loved the way all the different characters converged at the school bus incident. Being a PS3 owner though, I don't know that I'll pay money just to rent it for two weeks -- the whole rental thing kind of pisses me off, because this seems like the type of series I would want to hang to.

I definitely feel the Eureka Seven vibes, what with the ship's crew (Gekkoesque) and the organic-mecha fusions. Character designs, too. But besides those Xam'd has a completely different mood. I recall Eureka Seven being much more of a visceral experience.

I'm curious about the role of the "courier" ship, because they were talking about investigations at the beginning of the ep. Who do they work for and what do they do exactly that brings them into contact with the Northern and Southern Governments' military? Must watch Episode 2 ASAP...

You know what I noticed? That the red headed girl with markings on her face definitely has the Ghibli vibe and then I looked at the girls and they all look a bit Nausica-ish.

This show is like Eureka 7 but it feels quite different. Eureka 7 seemed so much more into future technology, but Xam'd is more of steampunk tech, kind of similar to Last Exile. Hope this one ends less confusing than both of the shows I mentioned. Cause seriously, Eureka 7 almost made sense. But there would be some weird line of dialogue that made me confused.

The show similar to Eureka Seven in so many way but still have its uniqueness nonetheless. The most resemblance aspect to me was the crew of the ship. It scream Gecko!

The character design screamed Eureka seveN to me. But you can feel that the characters themselves are totally different right off the bat. The first episode gives you that strong steam punk feel and enough slice of life to know that the city that the main characters were in was peaceful (even if short lived). Like Extrange said, the crew of the flying ship also gives off the Gekkostate feel and Nakiami draws similar parallels to Eureka. Having said that, Xam'd is uniquely BONES but also uniquely distinct. It is it's own I'm sure many BONES fans will enjoy it with the few "Hey! That looks like ____!" but will quickly find that it is independent from BONES's other works. Draw parallels, find differences, enjoy Xam'd.

@Myssa Rei: Rei, it makes sense cause the Overman were bio-organical mechs, with similar details relating them to Xam'd. I was going to mention that on episode 2, since they depict the Humanform weapons there.

Too bad the folks with PS3s will be able to see this earlier, as X'amd's 'normal' airing is supposed to be sometime this Fall. Boo...

On the design side, I was really getting some Eureka Seven vibes from the first episode, though oddly enough I was reminded by another oddball series -- OVERMAN King Gainer. Must be the character designs...
