i'm still kinda undecided on the series... sure episode two is great. but my thing about anime with this kind of theme tend to bore me out halfway through. but right now, i'm on the loving-it side.

I don't trust fortune cats any more.

I kind of like this story as I find it touching. Others may find it bad, but I don't find it as depressing as other shows/movies like AI.

@Omisynth

Funny that you mention Jigoku Shoujo, my Japanese friend just asked me today if I had ever seen it before. I'm not sure about the crappy subs, but because there are only two groups working on Natsume (if I remember correctly), it's gotta be one or the other lol. Mine look ugly because I'm using VLC when pulling stills on my Mac.

You make a good point about keeping the formula interesting. Good episodic shows definitely definitely definitely do that. It would be kind of funny if Takashi was getting chased by a different demon at the beginning of every episode!

@Halycon

LOL "reverse pokemon". Natsume is one of those shows that I can understand people losing interest in. Besides being an 'either you like it or you don't' style of anime, I feel like you have to be in the right mood/mindset to appreciate it fully. But I'm hoping it will pick up later on. It would be cool to see some scary demons for a change. I haven't seen any scary anime demons in a while. Also, I hope it sticks to its guns and layers on the character relationships bit by bit. For instance, I could be dead wrong, but I honestly think Madara has a soft spot for Takashi. Dunno why he does, though.

Where are you people getting the crappy subs from? A couple of other groups are doing good jobs with it and they don't affect my opinion of the show at all.

I do agree that those little things about how Natsume and his feelings about loneliness and his awkward interactions with people were interesting, but what I like more about an episodic show is it's way to take the usual formula and keep it interesting; as such, even knowing about the standard routine would make it surprising when the show deviates from this. The second season of Jigoku Shoujo managed to do this quite well, most of the time.

I had to drop this series.

This series seems like a reverse pokemon. Instead of "Gotta catch 'em all" it's "gotta release 'em all".

The fact that the youkai are coming to him really ruined the mystery and adventure aspect of the series for me. That coupled with the really awful OP and ending just makes it unbearable for me to watch.

The only real point of interst for me is Reiko's grandmother, who has a biting sense of humour and seems a bit mischeivous through the flashbacks. How she encountered and captured the youkai and eventually made them her friends was a good hook. But, unfortunately, so far her grandson doesn't really show the same kind of spunk and personality that she had. He's a really dull character. The shows only saving grace, imo, is the fortune-cat demon.

The haphazard subs and awful typesetting don't help matters much either.

Anyway, best of luck to you blogging this series. This seems like one of those shows that takes a while to really take off and demands a lot of patience on the part of the viewer.
