Code Geass R2, Episode 8- The Million Miracle

cgmain.jpg
Even the dog gets a mask

Oh man, so much lulz in this episode, I loved it. Despite the hilarious but awesome plan, there was a distinct lack of Kallen and C.C. this episode, and for that I weep. I know they had to introduce new characters and spend more time on those that have had little time before, but it still makes me sad. Regardless, a definite watch for giggles and laughs.

cg01.jpg

Dissent among the ranks! Not altogether unjustified considering that Zero seemingly told them to surrender, and the fact that Todo is not an idiot and knows Zero doesn’t really care that much about the Japanese. However, once again it was kind of a red herring as we know that at episode eight Lelouch isn’t just going to toss the Black Knights to the side. I expect that to happen in like episode 23…

cg02.jpg

Best…icebreaker…ever…I love you Kaguya-sama. Nay, there are no words that can fully express the adorableness that is Kaguya. And wow, she is surprisingly tall when placed next to Zero like that. She really isn’t that much shorter than he is considering her age.

cg03.jpg

This episode serves as a more proper introduction of ミス・ローマイヤー (no official Romanization quite yet that I’ve found, Miss Romaya, Rohmeier, Romeyer all make a close enough sound). She’s your general stiff and stereotypical Brittanian bureaucrat who holds a strong distaste for all Numbers. This even includes Suzaku, who’s a much higher ranking Knight than she is, and she says some fairly nasty things to him closer to the end of the episode. Hopefully she gets killed off sometime soon, but I doubt it since she has her own character page on the official site. It was really obvious she has the same seiyuu as Villetta, and it was kind of surprising that two supporting characters have the same voice. I mean, I know a lot of the minor characters or random background Japanese are duplicates, but this is a bit different I think.

cg04.jpg

Well here’s a definite answer to a question many of us have had since episode one, whether Suzaku’s geass is still in effect. Turns out it is, and I’m sure they reminded us about it for a reason. The obvious answer is that in the end Suzaku is going to be forced to kill Lelouch because of it, but I hope not because that would be some really forced irony.

cg05.jpg

I thought the guy was gonna have an orgasm right there on the phone. “Oh my gawd, Zero just told me I’m a genius, I’m in ecstasy aaaaaahhhhhh.” Very funny.

cg06.jpg

This scene setup Rolo’s real motivation here, it seems now less based on becoming Lelouch’s brother forever and instead protecting the school life he’s come to love here at Ashford. Both realize that if identities are compromised the Academy is going to be done for and neither Rolo nor Lelouch want that to happen. Seemingly Lelouch is no longer concerned with screwing Rolo over in the end because the scenes last episode showed that he wanted to preserve that happy life as well. I think I prefer that better then waiting around for Rolo to betray him in a rage.

cg07.jpg

Another round of additional characters and their development, as we get a bit more details as to what the crazed Nina was up to and what happened to her a year ago. Schneisel is one charming and devious guy, he is ruthless but puts on a wonderful façade that keeps everyone loving him. He is definitely a worthy opponent for Lelouch if he ever gets around to returning to Area 11, which is a possibility now that the EU stuff is over with. He also has a really effeminate looking assistant named Canon, oi.

cg08.jpg

Anya’s not afraid of getting her hands dirty, that’s for sure. Suzaku is pretty hesitant to pull the trigger like that, a significant foreshadowing of his decision to let the Japanese go at the end of the episode. I’m sure it wasn’t supposed to invoke laughter, but when Anya asked Suzaku if he was a masochist I couldn’t help myself. The Japanese certainly hate the Knight of the Genocide Princess, but apparently he can’t help himself.

cg09.jpg

Uh sorry lady but I see nothing wrong with that outfit and I’m sure all the Cecile-nee fanboys were screaming in excitement here. The people at Surise sure are brilliant, they make sure to have a bit of fanservice for one of the hot ladies of CG in almost every episode. Pandering at it’s finest, and I love it. And Lloyd sure looks pimp sitting like that, as if to say “yeah, that’s my fine ass assistant, we spend long nights together if you know what I mean.”

cg10.jpg

Obvious plan is obvious, but still hilarious to watch them all bite on it for now. They have such a low opinion of Zero that they don’t realize what he is really capable of. Some of them are suspicious, like Guilford later on, and they were sort of right. But they shouldn’t be limiting themselves to two decision points like that. I suppose that’s why Zero usually wins~

cg12.jpg

The three ladies on the left may look familiar to you if you pay really close attention to the OP and official site. I believe they are the three new Black Knights set to be more important characters this season. One would assume we’ll hear more from them when the Black Knights get to China.

cg13.jpg

Yet another new character that has been hinted at/shown in the OP to receive some speaking lines. One assumes she is Li’s assistant and supporter, as she refers to him with -sama at the end of this name. And the whole coughing up blood thing was certainly surprising, I guess he has a reason to move fast and reform China the way he wants it. This kind of disproves one of my previous theories that he wants to use the Empress to lead China himself.

cg15.jpg

I love emo facial contortions/looks of surprise, especially those from Suzaku after he gets boned by Lelouch again. The whole scene that is reflected in the shot I used at the top reminded by a lot of the end of the OP where Zero stands in front of the Black Knight army.

cg16.jpg

The plan itself was so hilarious, I couldn’t keep myself from laughing out loud at the ridiculousness of it all. Despite it being ridiculous, it was supremely AWESOME as well, because it was expected yet totally different. No geass tricks or earthquake plates were used like in the past, this was truly a brain plan to seriously screw with the Brittanians. And it was a really smart move too, because he gets to sit in China with his million man army and build them up. He was desperately short on big hardware like Knightmares and other equipment, this gives him a perfect chance to regroup and rearm.

cg17.jpg

Kaguya is adorable even in her purple Zero outfit. Don’t you just want to pick her up and hug her? I know I do. Everyone else in their Zero costumes were pretty funny, I was sadly disappointed they didn’t let Kallen or C.C. say much of anything in this scene though. Hopefully they get more screen time next episode.

cg18.jpg

And this was the crux of it all, Lelouch does not want to have to engage in a long-standing guerilla fight against Nunally. And he knew that since Suzaku was in charge he wouldn’t order them to be shot, and to let them go. However, once again I did laugh at the fact they are transporting a million people on some sort of ice ship commanded by Sayoko. I mean that is just hilarious, like the plan itself. But it’s filled with AWESOME, so everything is great.

cg19.jpg

I think she qualifies as the most important meido in the world, which is even funnier because she’s always wearing the meido outfit. Even when atop a huge floating iceberg ship thing, she’s in meido wear. The huge part of this scene was that Lelouch revealed his identity to her, something that was foreshadowed in last week’s episode preview when Lelouch hinted at revealing his identity to someone if that person could save Nunally. Because Nunally is close to Sayoko that may be something Lelouch can use in the future to rescue her or infiltrate the Brittanians at least.

cg20.jpg

Next stop in Code Geass, China gets a move on and starts stirring shit up for the Brittanians. We don’t know exactly what the plan is or how much they are working together, but seeing as how all of the Chinese characters have gained a lot of screen time (Li, his assistant, eunuchs, the Empress) China should play a major role in the future. And that’s a good thing, because I think it expands the CG world beyond Japan, which was something season one found itself limited to. I prefer a show that goes for new territory and expands, and Lelouch taking his fight worldwide looks like something we can look forward to.

Next Episode:
Nothing! Next week’s scheduled episode nine broadcast has been delayed for a week for unexplained reasons. There’s going to be some sort of special on Akiba airing, but maybe they will find a way to get in one of those .5 recap episodes at sometime, who knows. Some have speculated that it’s because the episode will feature China prominently and that the producers wanted to avoid that in consideration of the recent earthquake. If that’s true it’s kind of lame, the Japanese are way too sensitive to these types of things. Yes it’s a tragedy, but I don’t think it has anything to do with an anime unless Lelouch plans to set off an earthquake in China like last season at Narita.

    ah, yea everybody is oversensitive about anime, maybe it’s a proof that anime has been accepted worldwide and has a big enough influence over people

    Wow the plot really seems like V for Vendetta!

    While I was reading I was wondering:
    What was the geass Lulu used on Suzaku abt? Isn’t it that he will forget he killed his father?
    Why Kaguya calls herself Lulu’s wife and who IS she? … I am sorry if that was part of first season but I don’t really remember.

    Anyways, funny epi, it seems. I will post after watching the epi :)

    @Kamui

    Well from what I gather there is a big anime following in China, maybe that has something to do with it, who knows. I do know that anime producers/networks have a history of over sensitivity to things that I find disappointing.

    @Kamote

    A few people on /a/ were mentioning that too, but I really don’t remember many of the details of that movie it’s been so long. Was there a scene where everyone dressed up like him? Probably what they are referring to, heh.

    @Emmi

    Last season Lelouch used his geass on Suzaku and said the word “live.” So he will do anything it takes to keep himself alive, that’s why he was talking about how he wanted to die as punishment deep in his heart. As for Kaguya, she was one of the heads of the six Kyoto families that led the Japanese resistance before Zero came around. She calls herself his wife because she’s infatuated with him and in love with the Zero persona.

    Lelouch ordered Suzaku to “survive”, meaning tt he would not deliberately get himself killed in doing suicidal missions… or get assassinated….although in ep 21 last season it took Euphie begging him to “survive” tt did he start to act.

    as if suzaku plot armor wasn’t enough, his ‘live’ command is still on. Lol. he might get killed by the chinese feds rather than lelouch near the end of the series, if the fight’s going global.

    It’s still nowhere near the level of what the U.S Media will go too. Rewriting movies, postponing new or running series indefinitely, anything just not to offend anybody.

    lol even animals want to be zero but having all one million+ people dressing up like zero was a brilliant plan i just had to laugh out loud when one of the soldiers said that they should capture the real zero wth they are all almost wearing the same thing also you guys don’t even know who the real zero is are you ok?? also since i m a ohgixviolleta supporter having ohgi protect violleta and then violleta recognizing ohgi’s voice just confirmed that both still has feelings for each other even if the other did get shot hey “love hurts” and lastly Sayoko’s smile at the end tells it all that she does not mind that the real identity of zero is lulu i just hope that they show how much ass she can kick in the following eps

  11. Posted May 26, 2008 at 2:07 am | Permalink

    No Geass for 2 weeks? ARGH! That can’t be true!

    The 1 million Zeros was hilarious, cool and plain silly at the same time. But what I find most hilarious is how Rakshata is still holding her pipe despite her wearing a mask…

  12. Posted May 26, 2008 at 2:46 am | Permalink

    This episode was so filler because no one cares about Suzaku and it was mostly about him.

    The practical implications of the plan are just so, so horrible; Where the hell did they get 1,000,000 costumes from? It’s obviously got to be from a Britannian manufacturer so when thay got that order did they think it was for a Halloween party or something? And how did they manage to get it to all of the Elevens without ANYONE knowing? And why-…Okay no more questions. I must simply accept the ridiculous, WTFness of this plan XD.

    I almost imagined that everyone would start saying “I am Spartcaus!”

  14. Posted May 26, 2008 at 7:44 am | Permalink

    @Kaioshin

    Mmmm yeah the US media does do a lot of censorship, and I chide them for it as well. Doesn’t make what the Japanese are doing here any less disappointing.

    @Moo

    Chinese sweatshops my friend, sekrit Chinese sweatshops.

    @Onizuka

    The raburabu between them has been hinted at very strongly over the course of the season, and I don’t think that part of the storyline is quite over yet. To be honest knowing Zero’s true identity probably hardened her resolve because she knows he will stop at nothing to destroy Brittania. It was bound to happen eventually, I mean Diethard promised her that she could meet the real Zero if she joined the Black Knights~

    @Nagato

    The Black Knights do not discriminate based on species, they are an equal opportunity terrorist group. They only require that said animal carry out justice!

    @Nekonron

    Eh, it happened last season too with the .5 episodes. It’s unfortunate but at least they didn’t leave us on some massive cliffhanger in the process.

    Hah, yeah I wonder if she can still smoke through the mask, she is a brilliant scientist afterall.

    @Randor

    Suspension of disbelief my friend, if you try to think about small details like that you will find yourself enjoying the show less and less. I mean the show is about giant humanoid robots jumping around like people and super powers, can’t dwell on stuff like that :p

    I thought the part where Lelouch showed his identity to Sayoko was, surprisingly, a pretty strong part, especially with the fitting music. For me, such a little scene could forgive the entire ridiculousness of the million-to-zero plan. I mean, what the hell. =’)

    The part I liked the best about this ep is how much it shots Lulu mourning over Euphy. So sweet.

    Nice trait Lulu as well with going into exile. Thus leavning Japan in Nunally´s hands, which should be a great imporvement. But I wonder what´ll happen next though. I didn´t watch the preview so I can´t say anything about that.

    One question though, why is Suzaku´s order still intact? Everyone else that Lulu used geass on seems to have gotten their memory altered so that the geass command isn´t working anymore. Why not on Suzaku as well?

  17. ichibanluckycat
    Posted May 26, 2008 at 3:53 pm | Permalink

    Yeah, it’s kinda interesting that Suzaku still has all his memories intact. Maybe the Emperor wants to keep him with the knowledge about Geass for some ulterior motive.

    Where did people get the idea that altering memories can remove Geass command?

  19. Gravmech
    Posted May 27, 2008 at 12:14 am | Permalink

    So a command Geass probably will last till it is fulfilled huh?

    Hehe, reminds me of some talk about a side-story on Carve-tan where she had to be locked up in her own home due to “Sleepwalking” problems.

    And here’s me hoping for some new Mech designs for the Black Knights.

    I wonder if anyone will die soon. Maybe China will turn against Lelouch …

  21. Posted May 27, 2008 at 4:42 am | Permalink

    @Likewise

    It’s all made up by that million dollar Sayoko smile? Gave me goosebumps.

    @Manga

    You mean Suzaku mourning over Euphie’s death? I don’t remember Lulu spending much time on it.

    @Manga

    Not really sure what you are talking about, Lelouch’s geass just makes their memories of doing the action fuzzy, that’s it.

    @Gravmech

    One would assume, Li is probably going to hook them up with Chinese models.

    @Blissmo

    I dunno I think Li and him are buddies for now, and that they’ve struck some sort of deal. I don’t think Li wants to have to worry about Zero coming after China if they screw him over.

  22. Posted May 29, 2008 at 5:25 am | Permalink

    @ Calawain: Do you ned glasses? Check the ep once again and see the mourning. Maybe not on screen, but oh well. Dead topic is dead.

    edit – did you not see Lelouch dropping of a light for Euhpemia? We all know he did it but we weren´t given the pleasure of watching him doing it.

    @ AdrianWerner: “Where did people get the idea that altering memories can remove Geass command?”

    Since Shirley knows who Lelouch is and has turned to the way she was before he destroyed her memories of him.

    Posted May 29, 2008 at 11:22 am | Permalink

    I think I understand what Manga is saying.

    The question I have is why does Suzaku even know that the Geass was put on him? It doesn’t seem that anyone else knows. Case in point, the girl that Lulu had etching the x’s in the wall of the school. She never once came up to him and punched him, saying, “Thanks for nothing, jerk!” Seems that if she knew she was under a Geass and who put it on her, that she could react. And, didn’t they show an image of her continuing to do that this season? Or maybe it was just more x’s on the wall. Regardless, I took that as a cue that Suzaku’s Geass will be indefinite. When that girl stops doing that, look for Suzaku’s Geass to be broken as well.

    BTW, I love this series even with all of its flaws. Sexy sexy characters & Mild angst. Yum!

  24. Posted May 31, 2008 at 7:51 am | Permalink

    Rook: Since the Emperor changed the memories of everyone at school and it took the geass away she would have stopped doing that. Since Villetta probably reported it back in season 1 when they searched the school for Zero.

    With Suzaku, he probably knows because V.V seems to know everyone that got geassed by Lulu.

    Or we can just claim it as yet another plothole for this show :p

  25. Posted June 1, 2008 at 5:54 pm | Permalink

    I found the 1000000 man zero thing truely hilarious.

    i cant wait until the next episode comes out. ^^

    The million Zero stunt feels a lot like a V for Vendetta homage; on another note, I can’t help but think Miss Romeyer looks a little like a disguised Princess Cornelia… the mole on her chin seems way too prominent, and her personality would fit… although having a duplicate voice actor is a strike against.

    As for the China earthquake sensitivity, it’s a bit of a no-brainer if you consider that Japan and China have a lot of bad blood between them (*ahem* Nanking, anyone?) so symbolic gestures and political correctedness is pretty important – especially considering the rather stereotyped portrayal of China in Code Geass already…
