That certainly is a heavy mask, even though it’s really ugly

Apparently Sunrise decided that we needed to have an emo episode where Lelouch figures out why he has become Zero and how Nunally’s declaration to re-establish Euphie’s Nippon-land affects that. Kind of a let down compared to last week and was pretty much devoid of plot twists. Oh well, they can’t all be winners. By the way, drugs are bad m-kay.

Episode Summary:
I’m no longer writing summaries for the time being (unless there’s some feedback saying you like them), there are other sources with a more detailed summary and you should probably just watch the show =)

Impressions:

cg01.jpg

Charles makes such awesome speeches. I mean Norio Wakamoto just delivers the lines with such an air of authority and domination. It’s more of the same content from his speeches last season, but it’s a great way to set the tone for the rest of the episode, which is a story about ideals and the reasons behind your actions.

cg02.jpg

Rolo ramps up the creepy factor again this week in a couple of places. First off he is hiding the fact that he heard Lelouch call Nunally’s name. I think at this point he has figured out who Lelouch really is, because before we really weren’t sure whether or not he was told Lelouch was a prince by his superiors. This was kind of a red herring because in the end he didn’t try anything drastic and instead ended up supporting Lelouch’s final decision.

cg03.jpg

Also not a surprise as we were told of this last week, but the look on Suzaku’s face is pretty telling. As evidenced by his reaction and later conversation he seemed to be somewhat against this plan, he is a much less idealistic person at heart this season then last. He seems much more eager to destroy than to reconcile. The Japanese, on the other hand, obviously still remember what happened the last time a pretty Brittanian princess established Nippon-land. I’d agree with Ougi in saying I doubt many would go along with the plan, absent what happens at the end of this episode. Oh, I really love the nickname they gave Suzaku- “The Knight of the Genocide Princess.” It makes me giggle.

cg04.jpg

Initiate Lelouch emo mode! I knew this was coming, that he was going to get mad depressed after what happened to Nunally and give up on being Zero. However, that still doesn’t make it enjoyable to watch or anything.

cg05.jpg

Ahhhh, Kaguya-sama looking adorable again with that face, waiting for her dear husband and ending up being disappointed. Damn you Lelouch! She had quite a few lines in this episode again and I’m loving it. Good to see she’s amongst the primary supporting cast now in the Order.

cg06.jpg

The interactions between Kaguya, Kallen, and C.C. were very amusing. Especially the fact that Kaguya didn’t mind if Zero was having sex with other women. I also enjoyed her declaration that they are like the Three Court Ladies in Hinamatsuri. Lelouch has quite the impressive harem in just those three ladies, then you can lump in the girls at school. I’m jealous my friend.

cg07.jpg

I shouldn’t have found this funny, but I did. Rolo gets a few points for being a total bastard and fucking with Lelouch like that. Maybe he just wanted to see his reaction, maybe he’s just messed up in the head. Either way, lulz.

cg08.jpg

This was unintentionally hilarious as well. The maniacal laugh was good stuff as well. Good thing he didn’t forget to pick up some refrain on his way out. Oh, and it looks like C.C. is still buddies with the spirit version of Marianne. That shit is kind of creepy.

cg09.jpg

Here we have the big red herring from last week’s preview, and as I expected they didn’t actually kiss. It was pretty fucked up of him to ask for it like that, I guess they were trying to show how far he had fallen, but it lacked impact for me. I guess I have seen too much emo in my mecha shows that something like this doesn’t really do it for me. Maybe I’ve watched too much Gundam SEED. More importantly was Kallen’s reaction, including lines like “deceive us to the very last!” It shows how Kallen knows why Lelouch is doing all of this and accepts the fact that the liberation of Japan is more a side effect. However, she knows that even if the end goal is something else, as long as Japan is freed she doesn’t care, and is willing to let Lelouch give her whatever order he wants to accomplish that. More so then Lelouch being emo, this scene to me was really about revealing Kallen’s motivations and beliefs more. It was quite enlightening in that respect, spelling out more explicitly what we had already kind of though before.

cg10.jpg

Aaaaannnndddd the unnecessary yaoi fodder from last week. I still don’t really understand Rolo here. Maybe he realizes that Lelouch was just fucking with him but doesn’t care because he really believes Lelouch can provide him happiness in some way. It’s also getting creepier each week as he seems even more attached to him. I have no idea what the hell is going through that kid’s mind.

cg11.jpg

Man I wanted to see the Emperor’s face after this one. He would probably be laughing his ass off at the irony of it all. Actions Lelouch would approve of indeed…

cg12.jpg

Oh god the corny music on top of touchy feely mushy crap. Ah Sunrise stop it you’re killing me! Needless to say this was really painful to watch, although it hints at how the episode will end. I don’t know how he thinks he’s going to make everyone happy and shit, it doesn’t mix with what the Black Knights do. Sigh.

cg13.jpg

Ohhhhh C.C. you’ve been caught. A bit of dere dere there because your loverboy came back to you. Despite her pronounced indifference to it all she does occasionally act emotional when it comes to things Lelouch, as was evidenced a couple of times last season (especially in the final episode on Kamejima Island).

cg14.jpg

Bahaha, Suzaku lost his entire fleet. It was pretty predictable that Lelouch would come and save them due to the way they approached the battle, with the Knights on the verge of being captured. And the plan wasn’t that inspiring, but it was still wonderful to see Suzaku get boned like that, even if it was just his fleet and not him.

cg15.jpg

Facepalm, bash head into wall, orz…all in one motion please. Oh, and a groan in there for good measure. Now if this is some dastardly plan to win in the end then I’m all for it. However, with all the emotional crap they had before this I have no idea what’s going on, they have successfully thrown me for a loop. I don’t want to revisit the stuff we went through last season with this, it really isn’t necessary. I mean the Japanese people won’t join Nippon-land really considering what happened last time, so why do this? Much rage has filled me after watching this episode.

Overall, it was a pretty meh episode. I could do without the emo and competition of ideals along with the happy mushy resolution at the end. Thankfully the preview points us in a somewhat better direction away from that and hopefully to some new master plan. I mean, the show wouldn’t have a point if he gave up right here, something is amiss. There were some good points in the episode though, mostly Kallen’s resolution along with C.C. and Kaguya being adorable.

Next Episode:

cg21.jpgcg22.jpgcg22.jpg

Well it appears the Black Knights end up doing something, because we see Kallen and the others setting off some smoke and Suzaku ordering people around. Also of interest is Lelouch and Rolo meeting with Villetta, and hints of Lelouch using someone who knows his identity to save Nunally, whatever that means.

Some Erratta: Some note on my last post for this show, regarding when the Emperor called V.V. nii-san. While I was contemplating whether they were actual brothers and what that means, the following was posted by [gg], the group that subbed the show:

In regards to the scene in R2 episode 6 where V.V. goes, “Charles, you’re still naive” and Charles response, “Am I, brother?” What’s going on in this scene is that V.V. is trying to emphasize that he is WAY OLDER than the Emperor, and the Emperor “agrees” so he calls him nii-san in agreement of his youth compared to his accomplice.

Take that for what you will, we will just have to see what it means in the end.

P.S. Did the new WordPress kill blockquote tags or something? :|

[…] betrayal deeply hurts Lelouch and appears to send him on a much darker path than he was in episode 7 when he wanted to make Ashford a super happy place for everyone. I don’t think it will be dark […]

i think lulu giving the order to join the sar or saz is part of a bigger plan since the preview shows that they will try to escape but imo the thing to look out for next week is lulu removing his mask who exactly is he removing his mask in front off

Onizuka added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 3:55 pm

Yeah when you look hard at it, it seems more obvious that it’s probably a part of his plan. However, the way they structured this episode and threw in that scene with his friends at school at least planted the seed in your mind that he may have become all gushy. That’s what got me raged, because I didn’t want a replay of what happened with Euphie (which was entertaining in it’s own right, but I don’t like repeats). And yeah, the very last shot in the preview and that line to me either suggests he’s going to reveal himself to someone new or he just means he’s going to use Villetta.

Calawain added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 4:26 pm

Meh episode? Saw it coming with the emo and all. :/

Nagato added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 7:19 pm

I think the actual term is character development episode, but whatever, nobody understands these things anymore in this day and age.

Kaioshin Sama added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 10:08 pm

I thought the part on the train where Rollo was fucking with Lulu was pretty interesting to watch as well. I’m wondering if Rollo is really messed up in the head or if he’s purposely messing with Lulu for his own goals. It would interesting to see if it was the latter situation, but I somehow doubt it would happen.

Also, is it just me or did the art/animation quality in this episode look a little odd or different from the other episodes?

Shokkeru added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 10:22 pm

Well, if you fail the first time try again.

As he said, he started out doing everything for Nunally, but as it is now Nunally is safe and well, he can´t just think of her. Lelouch has grown up.

To bad he lost his siscon feelings though :p but going for the fanservice girl of the season is kinda funny.

Poor Kallen, she doesn´t know what she´s missing out of, getting to laugh at his poor physical stamina would be hilarious :)

manga added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 11:09 pm

Is Suzaku doing an impression of Elvis Presley in that preview?

Teeif added these pithy words on May 18 08 at 11:51 pm

Neither do I quite understand how the student council revived his determination to fight. Of them, only Kallen and Arthur are happy with the path he is on; Milly, Rivalz and Shirley unarguably would have been happier the way things were; Nina hates his guts; Suzaku might not be there, but he was walking his chosen path; Nunnally wanted Lelouch’s babies and Lelouch wanted to give her his babies.

Lelouch should’ve just adopted Britannia’s philosophy and married his sister as the right of the strong.

> This was uniintentionally hilarious as well.
I could almost imagine him saying “Praise me, for I am Zero, King of the Circus Freaks! Bwahahahaha!.

At this point, I think Rollo is just biding his time and waiting for Lelouch to slip up so he can save the day; either that or he is just crazy as fuck and wants to kill him dead at a later date….

P.S Just seeing Nina creeped me out, can’t get that image of her going crazy when Euphie died out of my head -_-;.

Randor added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 2:04 am

@Shokkeru

Yeah the animation quality suffered a bit this episode, they must have blown it all on last week’s transformation sequence :p

@Manga

Oh man trying to imagine Lelouch’s prowess in bed is giving me some really bad images for this early in the morning. CAN’T UNSEE.

@Teeif

Possibly yes, I would pay to see that. Maybe Lelouch should have saved his geass for it.

@Anonymous

Because they felt the need to insert some really cheesy parts to this episode? I have little idea. So much for a siscon ending eh?

@Watanable43

It’s the Order of the Sexy Loli Miniskirts, get it right!

@Randor

I think Rolo is just fucked up in the head, but maybe he’s smarter than all of us. Hard to tell sometimes.

Calawain added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 5:05 am

What I was thinking when he saw all the student council members and it sort of strengthened his resolve was that he saw that he could still use Zero as a way of bringing about peace. If Nunally really does want peace, he can accept it and try to reconcile things. Instead of his extreme hatred of the idea of turning Area 11 into a special region like last season, this time he is willing to accept it since it’s Nunally we’re talking about.

It’s supposed to be sort of a second chance. They could’ve developed it a bit better, but it makes sense if you think about it.

I kind of thought this episode would have been better if they showed Lelouch being a little more emotional. Sure, he went emo, but it never really looked like he was hurting much. But I guess that’s just the kind of guy he is, not really letting his emotions out.

Keith added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 10:04 am

How am I supposed to take you seriously when you’re so emotionally detached from the very show you’re covering?

Also, this episode barely had any resemblance to last season’s events. Lelouch didn’t find out why he has become zero, contrary to what you asserted, he has figured out that the his purpose has changed. Furthermore, the circumstances of SAZ are completely different too. Euphie went ballistic within minutes of the inauguration so there won’t be much opportunity for deja-vu.

I strongly disagree with the emotions you set forward in this review.

jp_zer0 added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 2:00 pm

@Keith

Mmmmm that sounds plausible, maybe that’s what they were going for. It was hard to decipher through all of the cheesy music and montages.

@jp_zero

Emotionally detached? Serious? It’s a mecha anime from Sunrise, it’s really hard to get emotionally attached to Lelouch feeling sorry for himself and turning to drugs and then recovering in the span of 10 minutes. I think you are taking it far too seriously.

And as for the rest, you are putting words in my mouth, I did not say this season’s events were like those of last season. I said that “I don’t want to revisit the stuff we went through last season with this, it really isn’t necessary.” As in, in the next few episodes I don’t want to rehash it, not that the same thing has already happened. I did not say that I thought the same exact events were going to happen, I was referring to the conflicts and feelings over the same type of events. Please read carefully before you comment like that.

Calawain added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 3:29 pm

As for your first paragraph, Lelouch is a rational man, people like him can turn their emotions around on a dime. I don’t anything more needed to be said. The stage was set and time was running out.

As for your second paragraph, It appears you have conceded my first point. For the second point, well, that statement does imply a similitude, doesn’t it?

jp_zer0 added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 4:13 pm

@Calawain: Being a mecha anime from Sunrise doesn’t automatically disqualify one from getting attached to the characters. Why do you think the series has been so successful in the first place?

And he calls him Nii-San because they are sworn brothers as C.C has pointed out. That should have been pretty evident at the time, though even gg has it wrong apparently so I guess not.

And we needed this type of episode to move Lelouch’s character along. Had they just glossed over it then we would have had major issues. As in he would be more or less saying “Well screw Nunally, let’s just keep going” which goes completely against his established character of a siscon. Whether you think it’s groan worthy or not is irrelevant, Lelouch had a major blow dealt to everything he’s tried to accomplish for the past couple years and he needed the time to cope with that. If it meant taking drugs then so be it.

No comment on the more of the same stuff. If that’s what you think then so be it, but the way you approach these episodes is just….wow, I don’t know what to say. You’re missing so much of the content by worrying about Lelouch being “emo” and such. Are people really that objectionable to this kind of thing?

Oh man, I’m really not sure if it’s worth the time to seriously respond to this statement. Perhaps you should watch Gundam SEED and Destiny a few times and then maybe you will realize how laughable your statement is. Destiny is somewhere near one of the top grossing anime in sales and it is a steaming pile of laughable characters that are impossible to become attached to. I mean, how can you take it seriously after that?

Watching that scene at the balcony with the student council makes me wanna puke. It’s like watching some crappy Christmas movie like The Miracle on 34th Street or something like that. *throws up* Nina.

I actually enjoy the show because I feel no emotional attachment to any of them though I will be sad if Karen or Kaguya dies but any other characters… I don’t care. My emotional detachment may be attributed to the fact that this is not my genre of choice but I would like to see Lelouch going back to being deliciously evil once again. Emo *pukes*

Point still stands regardless. Perhaps you should watch something other than Seed/Seed Destiny (which I agree are poor on the character development front, but also feel that it has nothing to do with this series characters being likable whatsoever) and stop making it out to be the sole example of a Sunrise mecha series and maybe check out something like Escaflowne or Turn A Gundam. Then we’ll talk.

Oh man, the certified JLPT Japanese expert returns to grace us with wisdom.

It isn’t a matter of translation, it’s a matter of making connections between seperate pieces of dialogue. C.C mentioned that V.V and Charles swore to each other many years ago and are very close and later he refers to V.V as nii-san. It’s pretty easy to make the connection between what C.C and Charles said as something like a blood pact because nothing makes sense any other way. Perhaps I can agree that it can also be interpreted the way that gg has it, but I also think that both interpretations apply.

I didn’t say it wasn’t “necessary” I said it wasn’t enjoyable to watch. Just because it’s required “character development” doesn’t mean it’s entertaining.

To me this episode is enjoyable to watch though. It’s not a case of enterainment, but rather a case of delving into the motivations for the characters actions and whether they are flawed or not, from Nunally’s decision to reinstate the special zone to Lelouch wondering if his Zero persona is even needed anymore. To me that is enjoyable and interesting stuff to watch, though if that’s not your cup of tea as I said to each his own.

And your comments provide an endless source of laughter for those of us normal people who are able to laugh at shows we enjoy and not see a show only with SERIOUS BUSINESS glasses on.

Whatever man, I’m just as normal as any person, but you’ve got to realize that I’m all willing to joke and laugh and have fun at stuff (In fact I’d describe myself as bit of a clown) like Lelouch and Rolo’s implied Yaoism and the idea of a little girl being a governor, but not at the expense of actually getting the most out of a show by taking in all it has to offer. I take it you’ve never read any of my articles as I lace them with jokes, quips and barbs to keep things interestings, but always make sure I bring each point back down to earth and ponder everything that has happened at some point to have the best of both worlds. I think that’s where we differ the most.

Kaioshin Sama added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 8:40 pm

all things considered, lelouch was a complete wimp, and rolo got some brownie points in my book until he got within 5 inches of lelouch’s face, which creeped me out. this ep could have been a lot better in how it was paced and how lelouch responded to his predicament. sunrise dropped the ball on this one, but they already know that as it appears they outsourced this ep too.

also, i laughed when nina’s image popped up, it reminds me that lelouch doesn’t know she hates him with a passion. or rather, zero.

Tmoo added these pithy words on May 19 08 at 10:59 pm

The fight scenes are getting really dry unfortunately. How many times has Zero done the ‘Drop/Blow the platform/building/volatile object’ strategy? Plus his track record sucks - he hasn’t won a single truly decisive battle yet. If it has any extreme significance (well the Order appears rather useless save for Karen and Karen and Karen after all so you can’t blame him for losing), you can be assured he won’t win thanks to Suzaku or whatever jumping in on him.

It has the stuff of a great series, but I do agree it’s just as fun switching off your brain and watch this like the next Michael Bay movie. I know…absolute blasphemy isn’t it?

Roger Wilco added these pithy words on May 20 08 at 1:38 am

@Kaioshin

No, why would I ever read your blog? I don’t agree with just about anything you say. To be honest I only see you posting negative stuff here and on everyone else’s blog. If you have such distaste for my blogging style, or Crusader, or anyone else’s, why are you even here posting? Do you really have nothing better to do then read stuff you dislike and bitch about it? At first I thought wow this must be just trolling, but if it is it’s a really pathetic attempt at trolling. If not I just think it’s sad. And I’ll reiterate what I said last time you posted in my CG entry: Do not bitch about my blogging style, stick to discussions of the show. Second warning, I’m not going to waste my time discussing this crap with you again.

@Tmoo

Hah, well the animation quality did take a bit of a dip this episode in several spots. There wasn’t much action so I guess they figured they could go cheap.

@Roger Wilco

Well he did rescue the Black Knights, but yeah, aside from that he hasn’t really done anything decisive. He hasn’t won any battles, in fact they lost all their Knightmares except for the Gurren.

Calawain added these pithy words on May 20 08 at 3:54 pm

@Calawain: Consider this then, I find it intriguing that Suzaku and Lelouch have traded blows in the last two episodes by destroying each others forces in their entirety respectively but for the ace units. One of the main reasons there was no major Knightmare Frame fight in this episode was that Lelouch didn’t have the ability to put up one. Basically Nunally was out of reach and that’s why he went a little screwy among other things. In the near future I think we could be looking at more duels instead of clusterfudge battles and it should prove interesting. I’m working on what I think the pairings will be myself.

Anyway, whatever you do after the summary I hope you have fun doing it as believe it or not I’ve got nothing against your blogging style, just disagreed with some points. Honestly they’ve got a good balance of comedy to impression in them so I think you have a good thing going. Might as well continue in my opinion. Take that as some positive feedback if you will. Sometimes though I guess it is just better to watch an episode. Depends on the show really.

Kaioshin Sama added these pithy words on May 20 08 at 8:05 pm

It probably didn’t help that the Black Knights had few knightmare frames to start off with this season after their losses in the Black Rebellion. So the few they had at the time (recall how few they had to assault Babel Tower with) got smashed later on in that desperate attack on Nunally’s convoy. Unfortunately for them, the loss of all of their knightmares but one is a significantly larger loss than the loss of one naval fleet to the Brittanians. He will have to come up with a way to secure a new stash of them soon, assuming Diethard hasn’t already requisitioned them.

Also unfortunate for the Black Knights is that everyone aside from Toudou and Kallen is such a throwaway in a knightmare. Compare that to the three Rounds as well as folks like Guilford that the Brittanians have and they are at an even greater disadvantage. It will be nice if they find a way to bring back the Gawain so at least the Black Knights can offer a good fight in an ace vs. ace battle such as you suggested.

Calawain added these pithy words on May 21 08 at 3:41 pm

Honestly the whole episode was a waste except for the scene between Rollo and Lelouch. I actually the yaoi moments, they are more better than the stupid fanboy service moments with girls in tight clothes or barely clothed. There are girls watching the anime too, not just some perverted boys so it would nice to throw in some fangirl service with hot scenes of guys too so the girls will have to something to look at. Seriously, anime is definitely going downhill, I liked this anime for the originality, now it’s becoming cliche and stupid like the rest of the anime out. If I wanted hentai, I would have watched porn, if I wanted a stupid Disney moments, I would have watched some crappy shoujo animes. I’m going to watch Nabari no ou now, this anime is shaping to be better than this entire season.

Natasha added these pithy words on May 23 08 at 1:30 pm

This episode was somehow ok, except for the emo scenes… urgh… but the ending was pretty good and better than the whole epi with Suzaku’s armies totally loosing. I also kind of liked the flashback of ideal happiness drama for some reason…lol

Hopefully, Lulu is over the whole emo mode and is getting on some masterplan to get Nunnally back and crush the Britanians.

Btw, luved Suzaku’s nickname “The Knight of Genocide Princess”. It was tym they realized he was a traitor.

emmi added these pithy words on May 23 08 at 6:51 pm

@emmi

You do realize all that shows is the degree that Lelouch has decieved the world? Kallen’s the real Knight of the Genocide Prince, and it looks like she’s become ok with that.

And its about time somebody pointed out that one leg of Lelouch’s tripod of justification for his actions has been blown up, retroactively. The only danger Nunally ever was in stemmed from her being the ward of her tell-the-emperor-I-want-him-dead-to-his-face older brother. Without him she would have been perfectly fine. Lelouch just admitted that to himself, hence emo mode.

jack added these pithy words on May 24 08 at 6:26 am

@ jack:

lol… as for being Genocide, it is not like he is killing innocent people and to clarify Euphy was not a genocide either, it was just funny how they said it, so I pointed that out. But do u really think Kallen is killing innocent people?

And well abt Nunnally, she was and is in danger and wasn’t that the reason they were living under alias?… I am not sure in that part though.

Anyways, both sides have their good and bad intentions and actions, according to me… there is no all positive team, after saying all that I think I am on Lelouch’s side but his emo side and evil laugh still irritates me.

On a more funny note, I do like his tell-the-emperor-I-wan-him-dead attitude because that’s what makes his character interesting for me to watch.

ace07 added these pithy words on May 24 08 at 4:46 pm

@emmi

It wasn’t complete genocide. But a great deal of the Japanese population was being murdered by Euphie, good enough for me to be considered genocide. The point that was made, is that the true root of this genocide comes from Lelouch and thus Suzaku is not the night of the genocide queen. Kallen is the night of the genocide king.
