A somewhat accurate portrayal of the anime blogging community

I definitely cannot imagine a time that the anime community was a small group of friends, but there was a time in Internet history. This is perhaps just a little tribute of sorts toward all the anime bloggers who have contributed to the growth of this anime community. Despite the various conflicts we have, where we often sling some mud shots at each other and flame each other for good trolling fun, we are still part of this overarching genre of blogging.

I am sure that I have overlooked many huge blogs that deserve to be part of this little history describing the short history of the anime blogging world. It is for you to inform us. If you are wondering, the terms are based on Everett Rogers’ diffusion of innovations. I decided to revive this entry to update on the events of 2007. So hopefully, if there are any glaring mistakes, comments are welcome as usual.

Lastly, there is a shameless fanboy plug for Os’s new initiative. I am always a mega fanboy lurker of Os’ blog, and his revival = Impz happiness. Nuff said, let’s move on to more srs bsns.

The pioneers - 2003 and before?

captainbleach.jpg
Oh, worship the venerables~

The almost non existent anime community was in its infant stage. Then, Nowhere Anime Blog (now Hop Step Jump!), Tokyo Jupiter 2 screenshot limit, Moyism and Memento were perhaps some of the few people who bother to deal with an anime blog. Danny Choo, probably the biggest anime/Japanese blog in the blogsophere in English, is born way before anything that resembles an anime blog. Anime blogs are not that popular, as people are still using websites and fan-based forums for discussion. Some blogs that are somewhat inactive now were extremely popular then, namely blogs such as Momotato Daioh, We are Mizuho, YSP: Duh, Chizumatic and Jascii also pop up during this period of time to cover on a genre that was off the beaten track. I mean, there was no such thing as Narutards and trolling was almost unheard of.

Of course, we could always start with our pioneer in siscon-logy, Mr Stripey. On other genres, Satire is definitely a favorite with Anime on my mind Derailed with Darry being created during 2002. He is also the creator of the now defunct Blogsuki. Nonetheless, it was accurate to mention that this period of anime blogging represents a new blogging community, as there was very little variety and innovation in anime blogging. However, it was an important foundation that would be swiftly followed by other bloggers in the next era, the innovators. The pioneers did play a very important role in shaping what is to come.

The innovators - Around 2004

tenpohahah.jpg
The benevolent elders, the kind teachers and the ones that will kick your arse too

This was the era where some of the biggest blogs in our small community were born. This strong list of anime blogs include the wildly popular episode summary blog, Random Curiosity. This period was perhaps marked by prevalent episode by episode blogging. Many of these blogs have benefited from their early entrance to the blogging community to gather a strong fanbase. I nearly forgot to mention Lupus’s favorite anime blog resource for episodic reviews, Cinnamon Ass that started in April 2004, as well as one of the blogs that motivated me to start, Sea Slugs! Anime Blog. News blogs are a premium due to the lack of huge interest, but Heisei Democracy was holding the fort for up to date news.

On a more local context, this was also the period of time when Singapore’s biggest anime blog, DarkMirage, appeared to the Internet shores to present his views about almost anything under the sun. Darkmirage’s sharp and insightful entries, coupled with a propensity for brutally honest arguments, made him immensely popular for those who are looking toward intellectual hatred.

Animeblogger.net was also growing with the huge blogs such as Kurogane’s Anime blog, Bluemist’s anime blog and Matthew’s Anime Blog that are born in 2004. Thanks to the efforts of Maestro, the head honcho of animeblogger.net, it is the birth of many such anime blogs in the community. It was noted that despite the growing anime community, there was still little repetition in information. The community, despite the entry of a few more blogs, have not grown that much. Filling in this vacuum of space has not been experienced in this year as yet. However, it is simply a sign of things to come.

The early adopters - Around 2005

uu_uaqdqes2006041519493639_.jpg
Power packed, and ready to kick some nice butt!

This was perhaps the third wave of anime blogging. Episode by episode analysis of series was still popular, and perhaps the main type of blogging that we have in this genre. Examples of popular episodic blogs that had been created during this fast growing period of time included Star Crossed Anime Blog, Batezi Anime Blog, Heterochromia and Chotto Matte . The birth of Anime Nano also symbolizes the birth of BasuGasuBakuhatsu Anime Blog, written by the founder Hung.

With the growth of the community, we also started to see diversity, as bloggers find their niche in terms of editorials, news, cosplay and figurines. New bloggers are try to bring something fresh into the blogging world. We had bloggers that break away from pure episode by episode coverage of series and ventured into different realms of writing. Examples included Beta-Waffle, Wakaranai, the defunct Hopeless Sensei, Hige vs. Otaku, and Anime Life that dealt with editorials more than the run-of-the-mill episode summaries. Despite its transformation to more contemporary blogging in recent months, JPmeyer’s 見ないで! 恥ずかしい… is a runaway success in the infusion of theory and anime during its early days.

Of course, how could we forget the number 1 lolicon in the anime blogging community, Lolitron’s birth in January 2005 as well as our extensive news anime blog in Moetron ☆. Also of great importance is Hashihime, the likely pioneer of seiyuu blogs. The other side of the Hontou ni’s blog, Hontou ni sou omou, believer of all onee-sama characters, is also born in this very year. 2005 represents the year to lead on to the great explosion of blogs in 2006 and 2007.

The early majority I- 2006

null
Anyone remember the gems of 2006?

2006 represents a critical point in our history where many of the upcoming blogs appeared to our anime blogging shores. Anime blogging has somehow caught on with the increased readers of blogs for insights. First up must be Ex-Fansubber Hitorigoto, where the hater of everything Naruto and stupidity appeared first in animeblogger.net, before running off to Jpmeyer for love. 2006 also marks the birth of four mega stars in figurine blogs (of each, only two remain active in blogging figurines). They are namely Riuva run by the tripleman, Happy Soda, 望み - What is that you desire? and Tsubaki of Anime desho desho. On the emphasis of Singapore, The Fool’s progress and Bj0rn brought the Little red dot’s view point of anime to the world.

Likewise, episodic blogs continue to dominate the anime blogsophere due to its appealing nature to many users, with Novastorm Anime Blog, Retsgip’s Anime Blog, Anime Blog ga Arimasu and Anime Diet among the many anime bloggers joining the fray. Episodic blogging is an old favorite, and there is always space for people to cover the blogs. However, the above blogs attempts to give a new twist to the episodic summary blogs.

Editorial blogs are also growing with prominence in 2006. Many blogs are filling in the gap of thoughts and insights on anime themes infused with various themes. These blogs include The End of the World, the intelligent controversy blogger of Omo and anime|otaku. Many of them continues to blog, capturing their audience with food for thought.

With the growth of the anime blogosphere, there is bound to be trolls who hate everything and anything. Essential for controversy and excitement among bloggers, Cory from Renegade Anime Blog, the barely legible ORZ-ing Drm, Baka-raptor and the I-hate-anything-against-me Lolikit are born for this purpose. They make mincemeat of anyone, and attempts to introduce pure hatred. Whether it is good or bad for the blogosphere is really up to debate. However, they have lighted up the blogosphere with a term known as dorama. It’s quite fun to be caught in it.

In terms of culture and differentiation, The Anime Blog and Welcome Datacomp carves a trend of anime news, while J1m0ne’s blog deals with more seiyuu love. Azure Flame also has Karura’s brand of hard gay and yuri jokes in her many random entries about how all anime are actually yaoi or yuri. Of course, team blogs are also on the rise, particularly THAT Anime Blog (yes, whoring itself is good) earning the irk of many bloggers with its laissez faire approach of bloggers, but also setting the trend of more team blogs in the anime blogosphere. The biggest anime-based comic blog also appeared in 2006. The name? Mistakes of Youth and also the erotic reviews of Onii-chan no Ecchi. It has been a good year for anime blogging.

The early majority II - 2007

null
The babies that are becoming adults of their own

To state that 2007 is the true birth of anime editorial blogs is perhaps not an understatement. 2007 gave birth to two huge blogs that championed itself as think tanks of anime blogs. They are The Animanachronism and Cruel Angel Theses. Owen S from Cruel Angel These also set up the initative of the Anime Blogging Collective, a group of bloggers with the goal to promote and improve the blogsophere. However, they are not alone. In search of Number Nine, Ani Nouto, Drastic my Anime Blog, Furu Anime Panikku, Ogiue Maniax, That’s Not Kanon, Mega Megane Moe and Far away no where are editorial blogs having a strong view on things and brings a somewhat “journalistic” culture into our blogosphere. It has been a boon for all readers who wanted something new, something insight and something worth thinking.

Mission to Deep Space, or currently known as Mou Yamete! continues the legion of nice eroge reviews alongside Onii-chan no Ecchi. Joining the small group of satire-writing fans include Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Anime Blog and Daijoubu. It seems like craziness is part of a good plan to success, and it is clear that the two blogs have created their own niche to make themselves work well. News blogs are also present in small numbers, with Alafista and A geek by any other name surviving well.

Of course, without any dispute, the episodic summary genre continues to receive well-distinguished blogs who tries to carve their niche in this well-populated group. They include Scrumptious Anime Blog, When Anime Past Meets Present, Atarashii Prelude, Tenka Seiha, and Subculture Anime Blog. The last two garners a bit more attention by hitting the raw episodic blogging scene, a sub-genre that is usually occupied by Memento and Random Curiosity. Needless to say, they have benefited from providing accurate and interesting tidbits to readers fast.

Team blogs such as Anime Banzai - アニメ万歳, zeNIME, Borderline Hikikomori as well as the wildly popular Epic Win Blog immediately comes to mind. Team blogs are on the upswing due to the various advantages of team blogging. Entries appear more often, with more diverse views presented in the blog compared to a single author blog.

2007 is a year of expansion for many blogs. It is perhaps a time where some bloggers have questioned whether a case of congestion has taken place. However, from the creation of these many blogs carving their own niche and mark in the blogosphere, the answer has to be a resounding no. Innovation within blogs are continuing to be experienced, and there continues to have more room for newcomers to enter this little anime blogging sphere.

Are you part of history? Do you think you should be part of it?

Just a quick note, because I have to run off to somewhere this morning, but… Momotato Daioh and We Are Mizuho predated Nowhere by a fair amount of time. Momotato deserves a lot of credit for getting this all started, I think, as his blog was my primary inspiration when I launched Nowhere. The only thing I did differently, I think, was to use a CMS. Of course, that’s now the norm.

Oh, and it’s worth nothing that I didn’t even start to see any traffic until Momotato linked to me. He already had a lot of readers.

Jeff Lawson added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 6:06 am

Great post, Impz.

I didn’t know momotato was that popular. o.o

AOMM has also been around forever. I think his first post was in late 2002.

Like I said in the channel already, I like this post, despite the short time of research and therefore the small errors ^^

By the way, I have known Momotato for ages already, but that’s because he did the Yotsubato! scanlations back then. I liked the blog, but it has never inspired me to blog myself - my big inspiration was Memento though.

I read some of AoMM’s old postings and found them nowhere as good and funny as his newer postings (let’s say about 2006 when he had blogsuki and was popular).

Just to throw my own two cents in, I started a couple months after Impz and the rest of the Singapore boom, because my main inspiration to start was Anime Desho Desho. So I guess I’m a late comer, but I still feel old with all the new people coming in.

Demian added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 7:36 am

I was definitely inspired by members of the first and second generation during 03/04. “david.anime” was (and always will be) my favorite for episodic reviews, but I also loved reading Momotato Daioh, YSP: Duh and especially Cinnamon Ass; BluWacky basically carried me through Fantastic Children and Gankutsuou. That whole era, when Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto and Samurai Champloo were airing, was great fun.

Haha, the Haruhi effect is much more powerful than I thought. Long Live Haruhi! Hopefully I would be able to make it as part of the next stage adopters.

Nekonron added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 10:46 am

Great post Impz. =)

I think that now with the mass increase of anime blogs out there that it’s more important to strive to stand out from the crowd. Since mediocre posting and producing similar content as the rest of the body of bloggers will only get you lost in the flood, creating fresh new content in an interesting manner will be more and more critical as the number of blogs increase. That being said, the quality of blogs just may go beyond what has been done before due to the increasing competetion. Of course that scenario would perhaps only work in an ideal world… who knows, maybe there will come a time where the amount of anime blogs would only destroy the whole concept of “anime blogging” to the point where they all die out (hopefully not ^^;).

Blogging is so cool, especially since it exposes people to different and new anime.

I wish I had the time to blog. Or maybe I’m just too lazy.

Kyokii added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 1:23 pm

Chizumatic is obviously not worth mentioning.

Aside from that: Impz, don’t mind your little inaccuracies, they aren’t all that important really. Also, you can never cover all the blogs - and you definitely have covered most of the important ones. ^^

Sasa added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 4:45 pm

@Danny: O_O really, I remember you are 1-2 months earlier than me, and it is mostly due to lumping a few of the examples that I want to mention X_X

@Jeff: Arr, I am hoping that you can comment to give me a better picture of what happened earlier. I have to admit that my knowledge of the bloggers before me is rather weak. In fact, most of the names up there are perhaps given by some of the bloggers such as lupus, TJ, kuro, mike and a few others, rather than research (even though I also did enough to get a better feel of who’s who).

Arrr, thanks for the heads up on Momotato, I have changed the sentence describing them to be a bit more accurate.

@Michael: Me neither, dude. Me neither @_@ However, I did know that it was a very good blog when it is active.

@Jpmeyer: Arr, Well, when I was checking the history, that is perhaps where I found his archives. Perhaps, he has another blog, but I have no clue then. X_X

@Sasa: Hmm, for me, my biggest impression to start blogging is perhaps sea slugs! anime blog, hop step jump!, hopeless sensei and memento, since these are the wonderful bloggers that I always consider in high regard. Ya, due to the short time of research, I generally will make some mistakes, but I guess it is really important for us to have some chronicles of what has happened in our community.

@Karura: You are definitely noted, Karura, but you didn’t have an archive ( I actually searched high and low in your site and found nothing ;_;). I do want to include you.

@DrmChsr0: Hahaha! good one. The king of one liners.

@Demian: Yep, due to my sleepiness yesterday, I was not able to add more names into the list. Thanks for the feedback, Demian, since you are the one who introduced to the heaven named “nipponsei”

@Batezi: David.anime? Wow, some of these sites that you mention are like totally unknown for me, and I really have to do a bit of searching to update it. Nevertheless, I have to use the google tool to find out.

@Leon: Hohoho, it is something big now. It used to be too small that such a post is merely an e-penor list. Now, it is ermm…a…proper e-penor list?

@Lupus: Ho ho ho, yes, and you are absorbed inTO THAT, wahahahahahah!

@Nekonron: Well, I am pretty clueless myself if you ask me, which is why I am very surprised at the depth of the blogs. I am but merely touching on the tip of the iceberg on the more popular blogs. There are perhaps a lot of other good blogs out there that I have missed due to my lack of reading.

@Shokkeru: Ya, I completely agree with your statement but I do not believe that the concept of anime blogging can ever be destroyed. The thing is that readers, despite their attention being extremely limited, stick to a blog as long as it can provide decent content for them. They are often lazy (assumption) to find something new once they stick to you. The thing is…of course to get them to stick.

@Author: Chizumatic @_@ ? Well, the limitation for this article is that if a blog has no archives for me to be easily dig out the age, I cannot list it decently accurately.

@Bj0rn: hahaha, I guesss so @_@;; I am not too sure myself too.

@Whispered.Hope: Seriously O_O. I know that anime blogs exist a long time ago, but I never really read them until I had my own anime blog. It is logical because I am not interested in anime until the past year. It is perhaps accurate to state that I never knew many existed now too until I did this entry.

@Kyokii: Very much so. Blogging can be rather cool, but for me, it is always to hear feedback.

Impz added these pithy words on Jul 21 07 at 5:08 pm

It’s really cool to think of the community’s history. It helps put into perspective the work that has gone into it.

I think we can also see the effect that the Blogging Boom had on the anime blog scene as indicated by the abundance of blogs that sprouted in the last wee while.

I think I fall somewhere in the mid-stage adopters, although I don’t think I had any readers for the first few months! I have a lot to thank Nano for actually since it was established around the time I started (back in my pre-Wordpress days with my primitive home-coded setup that’s been long since cleared off my server). Sea Slugs, Azure Flame, Hopeless Sensei (I really miss that guy), Heterochromia and Star Crossed were a great inspiration at the time and Bateszi, being the PHP genius that he is, has been a long-standing source of help and advice. It’s a bit of a niche area but the author of the shoujo-ai blog Mangaminx’s Lair actually got me into blogging - she warned me “anime blogging’s addictive” but I didn’t realise what she meant before it was too late! :P

Martin added these pithy words on Jul 22 07 at 7:17 am

Funny how this is making me feel nostalgic.

What about Tempy’s Journal? His blog is extremely underrated. He started using the “short episode review + screen shots” formula in early 2003, and he reviewed a lot of obscure anime that other blogs didn’t touch. I’ve been obsessed with anime since Fall 04, and I have Tempy to thank. Checking out all the screenshots on his journal influenced me to seek out the fansubs.

David.Anime was *the* Naruto blogger. After watching a new Naruto ep, you went to David’s blog.

I also want to mention a short lived blog called Gin Sweater. It appeared in early 05, when AIR TV was first airing. It was the first blog I know that applied cinematic criticism to anime. Rather than talking about AIR episodes and how awesome/not awesome they were, he discussed symbolism, and storytelling techniques, and created unsubstantiated theories about the way certain characters act. Blog died very quickly, but it was a refreshing change of pace. Other people have tried to mix anime and academia on the internet, but Gin Sweater was the first of its kind.

Satoshi’s Corner was another very popular, meticulously written blog.

Matthew was the first Western blogger to embrace moe and all things cute.

The funniest, most cynical, and brutally honest anime blog was Lovely Kitsune. That guy just ripped some anime apart, but he was obviously intelligent and obsessed with the things he loathed, so it worked. I remember him complaining about female characters who have that one hair that stands up on their head, eventhough their hairstyles look like they just used up a years supply of hair spray. Still unknown because he refused to embrace the online community. The only anime blogger that actually linked to Lovely Kitsune was Bluemist. Anyway, a lot of the more “humorous” anime blogs right now are Lovely Kitsune-lite. He was also the leader of the “youth appreciation” movement.

insignificant commentator added these pithy words on Jul 23 07 at 12:02 am

I didn’t mean to write that Satoshi was very popular. Matthew was very popular, at one point his blog was the center of the blogging world.

The major difference is that up until around 2006, anime bloggers were small in number. It was impossible to miss a new anime blog. New bloggers were encouraged and added to blog rolls. And bloggers communicated with each other; we knew the shows other bloggers watched, and their style of commentary. Now a days a new blogger is like, “Oh another one? Unless your approaching the subject from a fresh angle, get in line behind that guy.”

insignificant commentator added these pithy words on Jul 23 07 at 12:24 am

I for myself own a german blog about anime/manga for two years now and I think your post is an interesting introduction to get a picture how blogging about anime developped in the english-speaking part of the web. However, I had to chuckle a bit about your introduction where you write the anime community was supposedly in its infant stage and blogging played a very important role in bringing the gerne to the net. I suppose you mean bloggers made anime popular among blog-communities, because around 2003 anime was already *hugely* popular in the net. It already was in the mid- to late nineties (Narutards didn’t exist back then, but you had the moonies, the dragonballz nerds, the crazy utena and eva fans, and so on). You had tons of websites about specific series or creators. In short: Anime was already very popular in the internet long before blogging started.

Ataru added these pithy words on Jul 25 07 at 9:32 am

Canned Dogs is another popular blog that started around the same time as Momotato Daioh. Why the latter hasn’t updated in a while? I don’t know.

Though they didn’t spend much time on anime, I liked Long Range Bullet and Click Stick’s blog. Namako Team is still running. Just doesn’t talk about anime that much anymore.

Oh. I did have a small diary, but it was more of an underground diary and I didn’t show my true colors until last year or so with one of my new diaries. Of course, I can’t forget about the diaries before mine.

Bata-kun added these pithy words on Jul 25 07 at 7:46 pm

From what I remember Momotato, Hayama, and Jascii were in the forefront. I loved the one-liners in Momotato and Nowhere. I REALLY miss Momotato.

YSP, as an anime blog, started around the same time as Sea Slugs and as with Matthew. I’ll never forget my first link from Sugar who ran the now defunct BLurry Eyes. The other females who started around the “era” ran TokyoJupiter (Reika), Itsumo (kawaii a.k.a. maya), and Spokey Dokey. And one of my favorites was david.anime. His Naruto posts were — still are — the best there is.

Also, we should give big credit to Maestro, the admin of animeblogger.net. He was the first one who offered major hosting for loads of anime blogs.

Thanks. I would like to support the local anime blogging community.

f4chaos added these pithy words on Jul 26 07 at 9:39 am

@Mellow: Yes, it is definitely cool to think of the history in the community, since it is no longer one with merely a handful. Of course, I am sure that there are english blogs out there with a huge reach that i have never heard before, but i believe those numbers are little.

@Karura: yes yes! I guess i can finally update.

@Shin: heh heh heh ^_^;;;

@Martin: I see, blogging can be addictive but it seems like most people die off in interest. I think nano is definitely a very useful resource, just like antenna to bring some viewers into new blogs. It is getting harder and harder to bring new viewers, with viewing habits becoming more definite and picky. They have a lot of choice, after all.

@Insignificant commentator: Why didn’t you appear earlier so that my knowledge of anime blogs (or the lack of it) will not be that badly exposed. I actually heard of all the anime blogs that you mentioned, except for well *embarrassed* David.anime, since i ran out of steam with naruto very fast. Tempy’s journal is one of the livejournal types, and I did somewhat omit the LJ blogs. I do not know why myself.

Your observation with the blogging community is definitely true. In a way, i was lucky to enter a little earlier so that I am still somewhat recognizable. Nevertheless, it is really getting harder to be a new anime blog nowadays.

@Ataru: hmm, I see. Well, my exposure with blogs and the net started very late, and I felt that it was the case. I guess i am somewhat wrong on it, and thanks for the correction ^_^

Still, i guess bloggers did make anime rather popular, and create a community in which people can visit and talk happily about their anime, as well as getting their latest information.

@Bata: Arr, i never heard of such stuff. Canned Dogs @_@ that sounds so familiar but I am not too sure. Momotato daioh is sure a blog that is well known, even from a relatively newcomer in me.

@Ten: arr, hey ten. Yes, maestro is definitely my personal savior, and i swear to worship him everyday. Heh heh. I guess you spoke simply my mind in this. Maestro did do a lot for ab.net, and i am sure that more will be done.

@f4chaos: i am sure that the few i have mentioned (unless you consider me famous) in the article are the few famous anime bloggers from singapore.

I only discovered this website a couple of days ago, but I am really impressed with the all the great content I am seeing here. The different topics available have stimulated my interest a lot.

Any chance that this history will be updated anytime soon for 2007?

TheBigN added these pithy words on Aug 13 07 at 10:50 am

hey, whats the name of the anime for that last pic? Looks interesting, unless its just some picture… If its just some picture then i’ll really feal stupid. If its not, and it is an anime show, please tell me the title.

This is a great update to a great post. :)

Michael added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 4:22 am

I’m glad to see I’m familiar with most of the blogs mentioned! A lot of that would be in part to the aggregators and also the growing use of RSS readers. But I do have to agree with Ataru on his points out the larger anime online community…blogging is still a very small part of it, IMHO, and not as influential as this history makes it seem. I think it’s created a great community but there are so many great communities out there that it would be nearly impossible to compete without the aggregators.

I’m definitely a newcomer in terms of having my own blog but I’ve been lurking off and on for about 2-3 years. I don’t expect to become influential within the community but if it happens, I won’t complain. (I’m also not sure if I qualify either….)

Caitlin added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 5:24 am

There are a number of issues with this post (you didn’t mention jp meyer? You mention Riuva etc. before me? There aren’t many details on who comes and goes where?) but overall… it shall be useful for my purposes in making a more… holistic timeline.

lolikit added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 5:50 am

@Caitlin: of course, but it’s always good to have a pretty history post about our blogosphere.

@Lolikit: JPmeyer’s 見ないで! 恥ずかしい… is a runaway success in the infusion of theory and anime during its early days.

Riuva sounds cuter than Not Dotq seriously.

Comes what?

Have fun.

Impz added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 6:10 am

I love this post, but another correction: I technically started in 2005. I’d place myself more with Hopeless, Sasa, Batezi, Matte et al in terms of timeframe (I even remember being on Blogsuki, no less), but you’re right to say 2006 in terms of attention. Manga was the main topic of conversation on my blog and I didn’t really come into the fore until I covered anime properly.

Still, this is a great idea and well accomplished. I’m sure the trackbacks are violently fellating your traffic stats, too. :3

Hige added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 6:15 am

This is just in a span of what, 5 or 6 years? How much we’ve grown…

I guess you were one of the few who recall my older anime blog before I joined ab.net (and that makes me feel even older lol). Huge props go to Maestro indeed for the awesome hosting all these years.

I’m glad to have a bit of a part in all this. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Hehe “ran to jpmeyer for love” ;P
Great post Impz really does bring back memories

Hinano added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 6:19 am

@Hige: Blame your pull down archive. It confused me badly. Anyway fixed, and also added tokyojupiter.

@Bluemist: HO HO HO, yes, kinda. ^^ anyway, it’s a short time. I won’t say that the years are distinctively different, but more of a chronological measure. Dont’ think too hard on the names like innovators. It’s mostly for glitzy appearances.

@Hinano: heh thanks for blogging?

Impz added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 6:31 am

Hmmm. You know, this made me recheck when I was started and I’m not as early as I thought… damn this for making me realize. Just for my laff, just throw Kono Sono in at 2005. I actually appreciate he made this now: http://konosono.photongenic.net/?p=901

… I dont know many if only two or three of the 2007 blogs… I need to get myself back into the community, huh?

Os added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 7:53 am

I love this post Impz, and I really regret not having read it wayy back (and I mentioned about this in our blog anniv post, but gack! I thought I linked to this T__T).

Posts like these that reinforces this anime community spirit, and serve as a great Animeblogging 101 for newbies too~ *bows to sempais* ^-^

Really though, this is a really nice timeline of the anime blogosphere. Nice work, Impz.

I thought jascii predated all of them. Ah well, it was kind of long ago.

omo added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 9:23 am

Orz… even though I go back to 2006, I have been missing for most of 2007… didn’t even leave a scratch in the anime blogging scene… oh well..

Nice to see this… like to see how it was like before… XD This needs a graphical representation - cue the timeline! would almost look like a genealogy experiment with how much people have shifted…

Deranged added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 9:33 am

I still remember the great influx of summer 2006, fun times.

I find it really hard to break out of my comfort zone with the blogs that I frequent and explore new ones though, most of which surfaced within a year of my own, force of habit I suppose. The Anime Blog Awards certainly helped with that in its nomination stage though, where I added a few new ones to the list.

The porn site always gets remembered, but ikimashou… the children are so quick to forget my labor of love. FIVE YEARS I TOILED!!! I WEEP!

Ah well.

And please do link Heterochromia at the proper address, lest the evil ones keep getting ad revenue.

Baka-Raptor added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 11:38 am

Ancient, we are. I think I was commenting on Memento way back when - like in 2005ish, and I know I’ve been posting on other ones well before that. Matthew was one of the first, although I don’t recall seeing much of note since he started in the workforce. This seems to be a common thing with bloggers - work + social life = less time to watch anime and to blog about it.

Anyone else feel old now? :P

Haesslich added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 1:16 pm

I am totally the old granny of the anime bloggers.

Get off my lawn you young whippersnappers!

Anna added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 1:18 pm

That reminds me - which one of the bloggers is Saki-san, and who’s Oguie? Plus, do we need to worry about Madarame x Sasahara-style yaoi doujins of these bloggers? Or worse yet, the Genshiken 2 version of this, which involved everyone and the Sasahara-blogalike?

Haesslich added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 1:43 pm

What?! OMG, I’m not the first to comment! ASDJHAS!! But anyway, you better do a 2008 one and include me!

blissmo added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 2:20 pm

Thanks for both this post and the Anime Blog Awards. They’re big contributions. They put it all in context and make me think we gabby bloggers may actually be accomplishing something here.

hashihime added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 2:46 pm

Man, it’s been forever and a day. I remember when I was reading Momotato and watching Princess Tutu. Now it’s 2008 and I’m watching Shugo Chara, while I have my own blog. Time flies when you’re having fun.

It’s like watching the growth of webcomics, except on a smaller scale, yet closer to my heart and fandom. :3

AB community seems like a family..
Well I wouldn’t be very good at blogging so I can only watch you guys.
Long live the anime blogging community! You’ve contribute to the anime fanbase so much ;)

LDC added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 4:41 pm

Well that was an interesting read, showing a) I’m getting “old” b) I don’t know a 1/10 of the newer blogs since like ‘06. Guess I need to lurk on animenano and animeblogger one day…

LOL thanks for putting me with the the “oldies” but I think I actually came a bit after everyone else mentioned (~2004-2005); Matthew, Momotato Daioh, YSP: Duh, Jascii, and David.anime were a few I remember asking to link to my blog back in the day ^^;;

Honestly beside being one of the oldies (aka having free time back in the day LOL), I think the only two claims to fame I have/had were being the blogger who screencapped like crazy (until I got overthrown like a year later) and spending 200% of his annual income on anime merchandise.

Anyway enough of my reminiscing, once again thank for the great read and good to know the anime community grows stronger every year. I guess you know it’s getting biggerr and better once you can’t start naming the major and upcoming players of the aniblog scene like *that*…

… that or old age is kicking in XD

moyism added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 4:52 pm

I’m hardly important, influential, or anime-exclusive, but The Pond started to blog about anime in the end of 2005/beginning of 2006. This amazes me more than anybody else, believe me.

Wonderduck added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 5:22 pm

Wow… I got mentioned in an official history. Does that mean I made it?

But in all seriousness, I think finding out about the history of the otakusphere is really interesting. Since I got inspired to start blogging because of listening to podcasts. And I kind of jumped in without any idea of what I was doing and I still don’t have any idea. But thanks for the mention anyways. :)

Cameron Probert added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 8:17 pm

Actually I’ve been writing for a long time already than you think I have. Just that I’ve been moving around over the years. xD

bj0rN added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 8:45 pm

Os: “I dont know many if only two or three of the 2007 blogs…”

I’ll smack you if I wasn’t one of them. :o

Haesslich: “Anyone else feel old now?”

I know I’ve said this before, but why don’t you have a blog yet? D:
And I started commenting myself in 2006 as far as I remember, but maybe there are some things earlier than that.

Cameron: “Wow… I got mentioned in an official history. Does that mean I made it?”

Same here. And I feel like it kinda gives me a little burden in terms of a standard to uphold, especially when I feel like all I’m doing is rambling. But it’s not that serious so don’t worry about it. I’m glad that I’m considered to have had a hand in how things are now. Of course the Anime Blog Awards helped with that as well. :3

I’m also glad my earlier comment came to fruition. It’s great to see how far we’ve come. :3

TheBigN added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 8:52 pm

Well, that certainly felt nostalgic, even if I’ve not been part of the community for very long. Thanks, I can now one day tell my grandkids that I was part of the early majority in anime blogging ( ´∀`)

Shin added these pithy words on May 14 08 at 9:10 pm

Why, thank you for recognizing that we started in 2006–though under the name “Scattered Cels”! It always surprises me to find out just how recent anime blogging as a subculture really is, considering how tech and net savvy anime fans tend to be.

I’d like to note that while we are primarily episodic now–and I started the blog in part so I could write about “Welcome to the NHK”’s final episodes–it was equally started as a base for the podcast, which was the second post on Scattered Cels after the “Welcome, everyone!” first post. The podcast is, to me, equally close to the heart of Anime Diet as anything else on the site; the idea for the whole website was inspired by Hung, jpmeyer, and Hinano’s Anime Nano Podcast, which entertained me greatly during the summer of 2006. I actually pitched the podcast to Ray before the website, in fact, and had originally imagined that the blog would be secondary to that (I was thinking of only posting once a week, max). How things have changed since late 2006!

Thanks for the mention! We’re grateful to be part of history already. :)

Mike added these pithy words on May 15 08 at 12:19 am

I wouldn’t say I’m strictly into episodic summaries. I’m actually trying to get away from that label a bit lately by sometimes just doing strict opinion posts on a wide variety of topics such as games, manga, movies, seiyuu….just about anything I find interesting. The Kaio’s Corner tag goes to those. And a lot of people might not know it because I am the only one with the loud mouth who likes to preech, but we are actually a team blog over at Animehistory. Deathkillz, Klashikari and Skyfall’s posts have frequently been mistaken as my own. Sometimes to much trouble. It’s in the post tags folks.

Just wanted to get that out there.

blissmo added these pithy words on May 16 08 at 12:31 am

Nice, bookmarked for future reference.

I don’t think I’m a significant part of the community’s history because I, well, haven’t done anything noteworthy or breakthrough, although I suppose I am a part of the aggregate “early majority I” group (May 2006).

CalAggie added these pithy words on May 17 08 at 1:51 pm

Thank you for the post and history, it reads well. May be next you will cover anime discussion groups pre internet via snail mail that I was subject to in the mid 70’s. (yes I am old) When anime was mostly mail ordered or found in the hollows of seedy porn shops (not that I would ever go to a seedy porn shop, haha)
