More character introductions this time around and while Mikhail is doing his utmost to humiliate Alto-hime, it has done nothing to dissipate the Alto-hime magic in prompting adoration from the female bridge crew and Captain Bobby. I just love how this series wears its heart on its sleeve you can feel the love that the Satelight team has for the franchise in every episode. While it was a pity that Ranka lost, I am sure plenty more SherylxRanka time for songstress mentoring will make up for it. At this point Macross Frontier is riding high on my list of best anime this season.

As for critics of the VF-25 all I have to say to you is STFU and the Zoomie air strike is on its way. Just because something is old does not mean that it is no longer kick ass. That A-10 that is going to buzz your abode in your parent’s basement is 31 years old and nothing since 1977 contains as much pwnage as that GAU-8 Avenger firing 30mm depleted uranium rounds at 2,100 rounds per minute. Not even the F-35 JSF or F-22 will ever kill tanks and vehicles like the Hog. Oh it also carries cluster bombs, and napalm.

So Ranaka has enlisted the help of Nanase in her quest to win Miss Marcoss, and Alto-hime gets kicked off the deep end by Mikhail on the simulators. I just loved how they arbitrarily made 25 the number of Alto-hime’s deaths. Man the hazing at SMS is really brings back memories of barracks pranks and whimsical drill instructor punishments. It fits for me because that’s what bored soldiers do in garrison, for being in garrison means a lot of boring training. Since this SMS is pretty much an air focre I expect a great deal of laxity and laid back atmosphere, in that regard they are not unlike my comrade zoomies who deploy in the most luxurious fashion, i.e. with air conditioning and heating. I agree with Ozma that Alto-hime sucks at pistol given how his clusters were not tight and he had at least two stray shots. He has much to learn about close combat if the medic is the one tossing him about, and as for the make up prank. Bravo Captain Bobby it was so well done and convincing. Even Ozma was had the “ZOMG I would totally hit that” face when he saw it. Also I just love Ranka’s phone it has so much more personality than all the other phones. It also seems that Luca and Nanase are partners in crime…I wonder why.

At least Mikhail gives credit where credit is due even if he is being a hard ass. Even if Mikhail has problems with Alto-hime as a pilot he is so broken that he just has to dote upon Alto during the latter’s dayto preparation. That Bobby remark was inspired. This is why I can tolerate Alto-hime’s feminine looks, because every one around him is very much aware of it and ribs him for it without me face palming while I wonder why no one else sees it. As I said before even women are basking in Alto-hime’s elegant beauty so much so that he already has a fan club in the bridge crew. Given that Sheryl sought him out nicely this time, I say that the ice queen has already started melting…critically.

This Miss Macross thing was just awesome and while that lousy number nine took the crown Ranka will get a better bigger crown in the episodes to come. So take heart Ranka fans Leon only failed Ranka to stop her from singing and drawing out Vajra. I am sure Leon is weeping over his duty and I suspect that Cathy denying him after work delight is helping him think about his crime. While Ranka did lose I loved her song it was just so fitting as the theme for Alto-hime’s last test. Also not sure if this is right but Kathy won the contest 12 years ago…I have to say she has aged very very well. Again a pity that all that Ranka kawaii fumbling was in vain, for Leon put the safety of the colony before giving number 9 a kick in the teeth.

The Pixie Squadron vs. Skull Squadron training fight was glorious though I am disappointed in the lack of missile contrails given that it was an asteroid field and coupled with the fact that the Pixies were carrying a combat load I understand the sacrifice for the sake of realism. Good thing Alto-hime happened upon that Zentradi corpse. Poor Nene was the first to get shot down though if it is indeed the red-haired one she sounded so moe when she went down. I am so very glad these SMS blokes are not leaving their battle stations as they please; like that clueless bint from the Potemayo. It’s okay to BS during work hours, but only at your battle station when on duty. Thanks to the ace bridge crew, Pixie and Skull squadrons were able to deal with the Vajra threat in a timely manner. Nonetheless there seems to be one bridge controller, Monica, trying to hold out against the Alto-hime magic and while her tsun tsun disposition tried to mask it, Monica too will worship Alto-hime. While the real fight was short it made some sense given that they killed it using high powered plasma cannons at the same spot at point blank. No matter how thick the armor a even a smaller weapon can penetrate at point blank. Getting to point blank though is another matter entirely…

So yeah Klein-sama and her mates are Meltrandi warrior women who tower over men and can easily squish a man only their thumbs. I was wondering who those blue haired chicks were in the OP, and now I have an answer. Somebody slap me into next week I think I just died and went to heaven when the Meltrandi bombshell Klein-sama turned into a loli when micronized. I like how they made the pink haired one super tall in micronized form while red ended up normal size to substantiate the genes = height schtick. While Mikhail wins this round Klein did get to chew on his head, and next time Klein-sama will squeeze him between her ample bosom thighs fists.
All war is deception, the Red one can kill you ten times before you hit the ground. the Pink one can choke slam you through concrete. Klein? Well…

All in all a great episode that left me in shock and awe with how much the ratcheted up Alto-hime’s breaking powers, Ranka singing, and the grand Entrance of Klein-sama and her band of merry Meltrandi. While poor Shirukii is vainly resisting the breaking process I say grab your yuri goggles and set them to over 9000 for maximum enjoyment. I think that by now the audience needs to understand that Alto-hime has come to continue the brokenness legacy of Mako-cakes since there is no third helping. I must say Alto-hime’s powers of brokenness are terrifying. When his dad saw Alto-hime for the first time in a long time the very first thing that pops in to Saotome the Elder’s mind was his son in Kabuki girl garb. No wonder why they fell out, I bet Ranzo was pressuring Alto-hime to start wearing meido outfits. I like how the added a heart into the dog fight and to top it off Alto-hime’s pose after downing Nene. I guess it just shows how much Kabuki has influenced his life.

Well as development goes it was good to see Alto-hime and Ranka getting closer and giving each other some encouragement. I guess it will be Sheryl’s turn to bond with Alto-hime and judging by that preview it might get steamy… Heck with yet another strapless top I think Sheryl is on the war path. More Ranka cuteness is also in store as pelts her onii-chan with pots and pans and has a pow wow with Mikhail and Luca. In all seriousness though, it looks like both Sheryl and Ranka will get to tell their stories and show their other charms in Episode 5: Star Date.
Oh SH-T get every Ranka fan 50 ccs of Nyan Nyan stat! I hope this Number 9 bitch gets juiced by Vajra.

Personally, I like the fact Ranka lost - since it gives her some possible mentor time with Sheryl, and keeps her sweeter longer; becoming Miss Macross was the first step in Minmay’s becoming an incest-loving, Linda Evangelista-style Diva. As for Klein… well, I have to say the yandere appeals to me; especially when she goes Shark Mode on Mikhail. You also have to wonder what they’re feeding the girls in Nanase’s junior high school, to judge by her and Melin’s figures. I wonder if Klein went there? 
By the way, there’s one correction I have to make: Pixie Squadron was scouting earlier, but only Klein had live ammo; everyone else was shooting paint, or didn’t appear to have missiles; else they could’ve mobbed the Vajra. I don’t approve of Alto’s Kira-emo moment… but at the same time, he’s found a purpose in his life, beyond running out of his father’s shadow, so I can’t chide him too much for it.
And one final Top Gun reference in regards to Kathy’s annoyed expression: “You’ve lost that loving feeling… whoa, that loving feeling. You’ve lost that loving feeling, now it’s gone, gone, gone, gone… whoa-oh.”

The Mako-chan to Alto-hime lineage thoery is at this point like the theory of evolution. Its the best and most comprehensive theory to explain why Alto-hime gets so many compliments from women as well as making his flight boss and Dad hesitate before Alto-hime’s girlish charms.
I share your opinion in that Ranka losing is in the long run better for her as a character as an automatic win would have catapulted her far too quickly. As for Klein if she does indeed start gunning for Mikhail, but in all probability Alto-hime in the end would it still count has shouta-con on her part given that she is older, but when micronized in loli-form? Well Nanase is supposed to be 17 along with Alto-hime, so its natural for her to have a more full figure than the 15 year old Ranka. Maybe its the Zendtradi blood? We all know how a healthy infusion of Meltrandi blood did for Alto-hime, so maybe the more masculine Zentran blood in Ranka resulted in her development along DFC lines…
Thanks for the correction. Alto-hime’s blind charge was not a high point to say the least though if he struck a pose after I would have forgiven it completely. However as em-pilots go Alto-hime is at least not that great and no doubt having to work with Ozma and Mikhail will means that Alto-hime will be playing second fiddle for a while so at least he won’t Jesus Yamato bad. It’s really hard to slam Alto-hime for being emo when almost every woman he encounters simply starts fan-girling him. I like the SMS bridge crew though they are competent and not simply there for decoration. So long as Alto-hime’s emo levels are low it is drowned out by the gratuitous near yuri vibe and laid back demeanor. I liked the 2-year old crayon rendition of the Vajra. XD

“Danger Zone” doesn’t apply to anything except dogfights. So, from launch to when he’s dogfighting Klein… you could’ve probably dropped it in there without it not being TOO out of place.
I personally liked the comments sketched onto the drawing: “shit”, “die” and so forth. Very pithy, and very fitting for anyone who knows of what the Vajra have done in the past. And anyone who wants to strangle Mikhail automatically wins a spot in my books as a ‘fun character’.
That, and when she’s in Miclonized mode she can be cosplayed by Konata. Unfortunately, neither Kagami or Tsukasa would be capable of cosplaying as Nanase, although I suspect they could do a decent job being the bridge bunnies (except Monica).
Mmm… Konata as Klein, Miyuki as Sheryl, Tsukasa as Ranka, Patty-chan as Nanase… Yutaka as the shorter Meltlandi pilot, and maybe Minami-chan as the taller pink-haired one (who I think is Nene)? This idea could stand some further development, especially if we have Kagami playing Alto…

I just thought the crayon doodle was a very nice touch I think they did a banged up job on the environment since those vending machines seem very pushy and they put in a Nyan Nyan into the ep as a commercial.

But the environments do range from very well done (the sky in Ep 3) to… less well cone (the theatre for the Miss Macross competition was kinda plain, even if it’s not really meant to be viewed for long).
Also, I have to wonder if Klein killed the person who named her squadron ‘Pixie’, since they could’ve taken a name like ‘Valkyrie’ or ‘Shingami’ or something…

All Meltran Klein is looking ever more radiant with every passing minute and I would not have it any other way. It is nothing wrong with being at Klein’s chest level that way she can bask in her tall stature as she looks down upon the little people. I am glad Alto-hime is staring it proves that he is a healthy boy and not interested in Mikhail and Luca. Having the balconies function as shelves makes some sense as aboard a ship space is at a premium and under the equal rights clause the Meltran and Zentran citizens are entitled to stay in macronized form. Now if you will excuse me I must pick up my jaw from the floor.

I have no idea what I means but judging my Ranka’s use of it it is a good thing. Besides it be like tring to define “woah.”
When she is seated, Klein is at eye-level to the balcony. When she’s standing, then we get the chest level shots… but no complaints here. And we knew that Alto wasn’t into yaoi the moment we saw him blushing after an eyefull of Sheryl’s uncovered chest. That and if he’s of Mako-cake’s lineage, he is probably into girls, seeing why Makoto crossed the line in the first place.
Again, it is amazing what the right bra does for Klein-sama - she no longer gets the Ramius jiggle. That, and the Zentradi farmer made my day.
