Yep he gets more girly with every episode, all that’s left is getting a more final change and we will be in promised yuri land.
So in accordance to the decree of the gruppen-fuhrer of THAT blog this post is decidedly late but whatever. In any case the fight this time around had no missile spam, and this makes me sad. At least Sheryl is starting to become more than just some arrogant idol, the girl is starting to show some wit and some of that tsundere charm. I have to give them credit for inserting some tantalizing details that may or may not be used later I hope they bring them back later but for now I am content on simply wondering.

That’s not organic…

What no candy?

We want candy.
So Alto-hime, Sheryl, and Ranka get trapped after Ozma and his vic fail to stop the big red Vajra bug. Still Mikahil’s head shot did reveal that the Vajra are not completely biological and I suspect they are hybrid weapons. I wonder when we are actually going to get the gist of the Vajra’s reasons for going to war. While Kabitzin thinks that they are just indie music fans out to destroy pop, I have my doubts…I am starting to think that these bugs believe that Ranka is their long lost queen and intend to bring her back to the colony and refer to her as the Royalty. As the big Bugs are red and have a pain as a friend maybe Inferno didn’t get slagged after all. Nevertheless those big red ones sure are tough, they survive head shots and can still fight after wards. I just love how the humans are at a distinct disadvantage now and need better tactics and coordination to bring just one down. It gives a sense of tension as while a human victory in the short term is indisputable how much damage they take is always in question. Besides having a tougher enemy forces the use of concerted efforts making for skirmishes instead of duels. Given that the Varja were able to give Ozma a hard time and breakthrough the defense line in the first episode I am glad the Vajra have maintained their edge thus far. Maybe their small numbers imply that what the colony fleet is encountering is just a small advanced scouting element of many that were dispersed through out the galaxy. Or they might be the last remnants of a civilization on the verge of extinction and need a new queen.

No don’t stop please continue.

Sweet mother of lolis! Ranka is getting a bit aggressive there trying to remove his shirt and all…

Lovesick is still a disease ya know…
The UN Spacy seems to be filled with red tape as they didn’t sortie as soon as they got word of trouble and allowed a bunch of bureaucratic assholes dictated the launch orders. The nameless faceless dorks who pilot the VF-17s don’t seem to be dying left and right this time so at least they have something going for them. They still need to institute 4 man formations and get rid of their three man vics, but all in good time I suppose. At least they are trying to make the vic work for them.

My goodness Alto didn’t even try to cop a feel…

Not that he needed to…

Strapless is AWESOME, but Sheryl is definitely ruined for marriage. Alto-hime must take responsibility.
While Sheryl may have many adoring human fans the bugs don’t seem to like her and started destroying property in their fits of rage. I just thought that Ranka holding one for dear life to Alto was cute as hell. The transposing of the fighting with fight between Sheryl and Alto was slightly amusing as I could not help but grin when Sheryl’s slap was suddenly explosive. Way to go Sheryl for going strapless, and being a bit coy before dealing out the pain to Alto for ruining you for marriage. Though I have to say Alto-hime was right because Sheryl is an exhibitionist with that holosuit, best article of clothing ever, now to hack it to generate a random nekomimi outfit. I guess Sheryl thinks of herself as more respectable than just another pop idol I guess sitting on the charts that long can’t make for some sweet humility. Funny how she went into lady mode when her profession dictates that she use sex appeal to woo fans. Perhaps being farther away had something to do with it, nevertheless she was on his lap…Still I must disagree with Sheryl about the nuances of of public vs. private because Ranka was also there this wardrobe malfunction was public and not private, unless we can all agree that this is a threesome.

Imagine having to wake up to this expression everyday…

Sheryl Slap > Sumeragi Slap, more explosive and justified too.

Not nearly as lecherous as your male fans though…
The Ranka intervention did make me giggle inside, and I confess that instead of eating it as Shirukii suggests that we ought to play with our food for once. The interesting thing I found was that Grace had some illegal implants of the cybernetic variety, given how they are illiegal perhaps Grace is not only Sheryl’s manager, but handler as well for some unnamed organization with enough pull to get the fifth freedom. I am starting to like Sheryl a bit more as she probably did work hard to get where she is, it’s not every day that a new idol attains great success. Besides her threats to Alto-hime were blunt, but the whole “I’ll forgive you if you want to keep it in mind so you have something for tonight” remark was so deliciously snarky and witty; I found it somewhat charming too. I suspect that Alto will be keeping those tuna buns in mind for some time. Too bad Sheryl still forgot about her earrings and now she has to see Alto-hime again. I hope it will be interesting…

…

May we play with them first?

Who the buns or Ranka?
So it turns out that Ozma is not Ranka’s real onii-chan, I suspect he took a page out of Stripey’s Tao of Sis-con and adopted Ranka and forced her to call him onii-chan. Sis-con aside I have to commend the man for taking in an orphan on military pay, though I guess Ozma went mercenary for reasons other than being tired of hierarchy. Good to see that Leon is interested in something other than his career and ain’t just a mere clone of Oberstien. I just thought it was so evil of him to lay out Cathy on top of Ozma’s profile as if he was telling the mercenary to watch as he put his tongue down her throat. I have to say Leon’s sense of timing is strict no doubt he allots enough time to love Cathy, tenderly. Still I like how they just inserted some names into the profiles like Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie, good to see the production team having a bit of fun while making this episode. It reinforces for me at least that this series is made by blokes who enjoy their work and aren’t in the business of lecturing us about right and wrong. It’s space opera plain and simple, I just hope that the light hearted attitude is maintained. It’s Macross so I guess I am much more forgiving since they were able to hit all the right buttons to endear themselves to me, besides if there is heavy handed seriousness involved then it might end up being something like the Star Wars Episodes I-III. It’s campy, but its the Indiana Jones kind of campy. I suspect that this franchise is not unlike that of the Legend of Zelda where the same formula is kept and it remains timeless enough to keep fans coming back for more.

Tell me more…

Really?

Woah even Ranka is going to keep it in her mind…
Now that Alto is no longer running away he will probably reconcile with is father, and in traditional Mako-cakes fashion will don a Kabuki outfit to break audiences around the fleet. From the look of things the Saotome family is indeed of some renown and maybe Haesslich is right, the Saotome family may very well have been founded my Mako-cakes and helped along with an infusion of Metrandi blood. I just love how the background stuff like cable cars and that roving vending machine still appear at this point, I think it gives the fleet it self some personality to boot too. As I have said before I appreciate how they pile on the familiar places of today, the new one is the Griffith Observatory in LA. Ironic how it is a tourist attraction but is a place of seclusion where Ranka sings her oldie, and I am sure that her song will have some consequence down the line. I wonder what it is about. Bonus points if they add a new language and alphabet to go along with this long lost song. It also made Alto-hime look even more girly.

It’s so wrong…

It feels so right…

Sticking it to Ozma are we?
Gilliam’s funeral also gave us some hints about how the colony fleet maintains it’s self without having to re-supply that often or stop at way points. Seems that they recycle everything and it makes sense for a self-sufficient fleet to do so. I just love how they kind of co-opted the Fremen ritual of taking a dead man’s water and took it to the next level. Considering how bad soldier pay must be a simple soldier’s grave is but a small compensation for serving. I guess I can sort of understand where Ozma is coming from about having no grave on the fleet because resources are so precious, but come on mercenary pay is much more lucrative than grunt pay. They even get cooler toys. Well Alto has just been selected for SMS pilot training and I can’t wait to see Alto-hime pilot his own VF-25. Man even merc hours mirror USAF hours in that they start their day rather late at 0800 rather than at 0700 or earlier. Ranka also takes a step forward and joins the Miss Macross competition. I hope she sings her Nyan Nyan song too.

Seven guns exactly, its attention like this that makes me happy. Makes me want to cheer.

And a great Fremen warrior.

Oh please sing the Nyan Nyan song…

Stripey added these pithy words on Apr 24 08 at 7:22 amI actually didn’t realize this until I saw your screenshots, but Ranka even has a mini-ahoge! She is pinging the Vajra! No wonder they always know where she is.
“Still I must disagree with Sheryl about the nuances of of public vs. private because Ranka was also there this wardrobe malfunction was public and not private, unless we can all agree that this is a threesome.”
This, sir, is why logic was invented d(’d). Three’s a crowd.
Ranka tugging on the shirt was adorable, and I also thought she was trying to rip Alto’s shirt off at first. However, I did appreciate Sheryl’s confidence and I think she has earned it. If a love triangle develops (and I think one will), I am not sure who I would root for.
The Leon-Cathy escapade is even more awesome, because the president is also her father. I bet he is just trying to climb the company ladder, if you will.
Kabitzin added these pithy words on Apr 24 08 at 7:48 amAs much as I don’t really like Sheryl and her “holier than thou” attitude. I’ll admit that I lol’d hard when she essentially told Alto it was okay to keep her in mind while he pulls one off at night.
Shirukii added these pithy words on Apr 24 08 at 9:51 amAh yes, the fapping joke. I totally made that joke in my head right before Sheryl said that, and when she actually said it I rewound and listened again to make sure that I wasn’t just imagining it, and then produced a hearty lul.
jpmeyer added these pithy words on Apr 24 08 at 10:39 amWoah even Ranka is going to keep it in her mind…
Ranka/Sheryl yuri in the works? ![]()
@Stripey
You ought to be thanking me…
@Kabitzin
Hey you right it was there all along. Sheryl scored major points in this one proving that she is capable of wit rather than simply insults. This triangle might get a bit dicey…
I doubt Leon is doing it to further his career I bet he landed his job before he met her. Besides President Glass has to get elected and it takes the Senate to sack him, not the president. Even if he gets dismissed he’s still on the pay roll. Besides I am sure Cathy’s wiles alone lured him in, who would not want some tender loving thirty seconds after work…
@Shirukii
Yeah that was another high point in this episode, it was delicious. I am sure that Sheryl is going to melt before long Alto-hime seems to have made quite an impression…
@jpmeyer
Who knows maybe she’s your descendant? For me it was unexpected and I could not believe my ears i had to go back…twice.
@TheBigN
Please that is somewhat tame these days, I bet there is a doujin where Alto-hime becomes a girl and we get a yuri threesome. Now that there seems to be a Metrandi-Loli-bombshell we might have something else all together in the making…
Stripey: Admit it - you just watch this for the ‘onii-san’ factor. Ozma’s not like you - he felt guilty for failing to protect her family, which makes it different from what you are.
jp: That’s because she’s an idol and knows what people do to in front of her pictures and posters late at night. And she knows she’s sexy, so given that he saw more than the photos probably ever show on the Net (at least the non-faked ones)…
Crusader: I think Klein Klan was introduced to give Stripey an ‘out’ with his wife (”Honey, look! She’s really an adult! She just… shrinks down a lot due to some genetic information being missing, so when she goes human-size…”)
Haesslich added these pithy words on Apr 26 08 at 5:28 pm@Haesslich
Perhaps this is the case, nevertheless I am glad Klein-sama has a legitimate reason to be the resident loli at SMS. Meltrandi Warrior Woman 4TW! I bet Mrs. Stripey is bigger than Stripey… ![]()
Crusader: I love Klein Klan for being the resident busty Meltrandi who has a yandere side. That last scene where she’s trying to strangle Mikhail and has that SD face was… very, very nice. Anyone who wants to strangle Mikhail Buran, I can approve of.
Haesslich added these pithy words on Apr 26 08 at 8:39 pm@Haesslich
Well Mikhail has at least one use an that is ribbing Alto-hime. Even if he is a bit of a jerk at least we know Klein-sama can crush him with her bare hands… I was wondering why there was a blue haired loli, but once it turned out to be a Meltrandi Warrior my interest shot way up. I can’t wait to see it. I wonder if Alto is related to Klein by some Meltrandi ancestor…
Mikhail’s there to make sure Alto doesn’t slack off, and to give him a foil to get annoyed by/be annoying with. He’s like a Max Jenius but with a huge ego… but man, I loved that last bit with Klein. First, you got the Zentradi Weapons commercial (”Zentradi weapons are superior! Even after thousands of years of use, they never break down!”) and then the ‘needs more training’ line… and then you see her as a blue-haired loli. Must say, Megumi Toyoguchi’s showing some decent range there… and I -am- charmed by her attitude.
Betcha Alto doesn’t get to keep the nice liquid-plasma rifle he used on the Vajra, though. Was it planted there, or did he just accidentally salvage something good from the dead Zentradi?
