True, true… It is Old Skool, afterall… but you also hafta remember that the mangaka died of cerebral hemorrhage so the story, though it may have ran to cover high school, college and life after college, was never finished so the anime producers may possibly invent their own twist and end it to their liking.

…I wonder how they ended the story in the Japanese live action adaptation and the Taiwanese drama?

Ya, i doubt so too. Considering that the manga starts during the 1990s, it is a society where shoujo represents a little of the true society. Women are more in an inferior species in a highly patriarchal environment. I should stop caring and just enjoy the silly shoujo, seriously =3

I think people wanting Kotoko to be some bad ass character who doesn’t take any shit from Tsunderella are kind of going to be disappointed. This is old shoujo and that’s how it works. The guy plays hard to get forever, but every once in a while shows that he cares. I think she has stood up for herself pretty well so far, but she’s never going to go tell him to GTFO and find a better man. Irie is going to be a total bastard to most people. I don’t think that’s gonna change.

Haha Impz, I think that Kotoko’s lapse of sanity was… well, a lapse of sanity. Not really spineless. I often have lapses in sanity as well, just never nearly as embarrassing. xD

The story starts out with the heroine with not a load of self confidence, so the spinelessness this early in the series is somewhat justified. But little by little she’ll start to assert herself more as she learns what buttons to push on Naoki.

Yes, that sequence with her lovely visage in the bed crying herself to sleep made my heart melt as well. That scene pretty much made the ep for me.

After how last weeks’ episode ended (which, giant ripoff, is exactly the same way this episode started, for three whole minutes), I’d say she’s doing really well. I mean, the slap! And as for people not acting like that in real life, I’m not buying it. Besides, she’s at least 30% less spineless than the average male romantic lead in anime.

I was really kind of boggled by the fact that things seemed to be getting a little meaningful after the slap (except for Mrs. Denial Mom) when Kin-chan showed up to wreck the mood.

Give it another chance, Impz. I’d say the slap and the argument in front of the blackboard more than made up for it. Kotoko is firmly back to not taking any of Naoki’s lip, and it’s pretty awesome!

Well, I really got pissed off big time in this episode. I was chatting with Crusader over Yim today when he is about to post the entry and is ranting over this episode. This episode really made me extremely disappointed, particularly over Kotoko. Don’t get me wrong first. I like this episode as it is, but I really was extremely supremely disappointed at Kotoko.

First of all, this girl goes all gungho about challenging Naoki in the relay. However, when she is about to pass the baton to Kin, she simply goes all lovey dovey over him. Some might consider it cute but I consider it completely spineless. Yes, girl, we know you love him but you are like trying to beat him a minute ago. Will you bloody grow a spine? Just a damn bit?

After that scene, I got so pissed that I was not able to concentrate properly for the remaining of the episode. I guess that’s one thing that I do not like, where women are supposed to be easily moved by emotions and allow males to be chauvinistic and all cool.

Total rubbish. However, it also shows the cultural situation of males and females subconsciously appearing in the mangaka’s works. Just a rant sorry. I really hate it when shoujo gals have no spine at all. I do not mind you emoing, just do not sell your body away like crap.
