If it’s not Sheryl or Ranka…dang Alto is good. At least Mako-cakes good. Heck he could give any girl this season a good run for her money, just wow.
Most of the first anime episodes of the spring 2008 season have been shown. It’s just logical for THAT Anime Blog to have a listing of the top 5 1st anime episodes that I think everyone should watch. I am trying to rope in the other bloggers from here to write up on their own impressions. If you feel that my view is completely skewed, do give us your viewpoint on the top 5 series for you right now. They are ranked from Fifth to first, in reverse order.
Let’s compare and discuss! In other news, you might notice the increased number of two bloggers posting. It’s a new thing we are trying in order to bring differing perspectives in a single post. If you can tell, Crusader and me (Allison to Lillia) and Crusader and Calawain (Code Geass R2) are trying this out. I hope it will give you a more well-rounded approach toward an episode and encourage more discussion and food for thought.
P/s: Impz is studying for his exam, so his VK entry will be delayed.
Extrange’s Sneak Comment: I hate you Impz….He published the post without me, so I had to make my entry in 7 minutes. Funny how well the brain works under pressure.
Impz’s Picks
5th: Vampire Knight
4th: Macross Frontier
3rd: Kurenai
2nd: Library Wars
1st: Himitsu ~the Revelation~
Thoughts
Vampire Knight proves to be a good transition from the manga to anime form, and the characters are nicely animated. In addition, it is the best shoujo opening compared to Itazura no Kiss and Special A. Macross Frontier is in a genre that I usually diss, but the awesome graphics and the highly addictive NyanNyan song by Ranka brings it to 4th. Kurenai starts off with a very interesting premise and impresses me with two distinctively interesting characters in Murasaki and Beniha. I will like to see what lies behind this strange “Mediator” business.
Library Wars earns its second rank from a good blend of humor, action and kick assing Iku. If there is anything that makes me click for a series, it must be the love-hate relationship of the main characters. Lastly, I will put a rather strange choice for most considering I did not blog this series. Himitsu ~The Revelation~ is the only series that made me cry from the emotional drain that it delivers. “I am trying to forget you.”. It’s a statement I will remember for a while. I hope that Himitsu ~The Revelation~ will be subbed soon so that people can experience what I did.
Rieu’s Picks
5th: Itazura na Kiss
4th: Nabari no Ou
3rd: Kurenai
2nd: Library Wars
1st: Soul Eater
Thoughts
Let me start out by saying that even though this is a “first” episode post, I’ve seen the second episodes of most shows and yes, I let that influence my choices. Itazura na Kiss took the fifth spot because while I love craziness and drama and tense plotlines as much as the next guy, there are times when I just want to kick back, relax, and enjoy a show. Itazura may be predictable and something you’ve seen before, but it does what it does quite well…and if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. As excited as I was about Nabari no Ou, I’m more excited about it’s potential rather than the current episodes…hence it getting the 4th spot. In third place is a show I never saw coming, Kurenai. It has somehow managed to take a bunch of things I hate (whiny brats, a ‘modern’ setting, lack of action) and wrap it all up into a series that has me fascinated so far.
As for the top spots, Library Wars ranks in at a very solid #2. If you haven’t read my thoughts on this show, you really should go check them out on our review post of the first episode. It should be mentioned that I’m ranking this show #2 and I haven’t even seen subs for it yet. You should at least be impressed by that. Then we have the big #1, Soul Eater. The reason Soul Eater gets the top spot can be summed up in one word: Style. Yes, it’s shonen, it’s bound to be full of GAR this and GAR that, and yes…it will annoy people with a narrow sense of humor. But man does it have style.
Calawain’s Picks
5th: Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
4th: Kamen no Maid Guy
3rd: Kure-nai
2nd: Kanokon
1st: Code Geass R2
Thoughts
I found myself laughing through most of my viewing experience of Kyouran Kazoku Nikki mostly because Kyouka-sama is great. I can handle the fast talking (I’m a quick reader), and the fact that a loli nekko mimi talks with such high regards for herself and in the third person just makes me smile. I had no idea what was going on half the episode, but that made it great, I need a totally random show this season. The only reason it doesn’t beat out Kamen no Maid Guy is because coming into the season I already had a spot in my heart for a humongous manly man in a maid outfit and he was exactly as I saw him to be. Now only if the rest of the cast was more interesting than they have shown so far. Kure-nai has potential because the plot setup and dynamics here are pretty unique and I see this show as having the potential to be a real showcase of character development. Watching Murasaki and Shinkuro grow together should be a great watch.
You can read my vast praise of Kanokon in my two episode entries so far, but needless to say it’s a combination of two of my favorite things. Fanservice done in a very sensual and erotic way that doesn’t seem tacky or gimmicky, and the wonderful voice talents of Ayako Kawasumi and Mamiko Noto. Especially the former, who delivers sexually charged, flirtatious lines with delicious emphasis and real believability. The other show I’m blogging Code Geass R2 has lived up to the hype and promise of last season. The first two episodes have been a shot of fast-paced action, plot explanations, and opening up of even more questions to be answered. Sundays definitely don’t come fast enough this season.
Crusader’s Picks
5th Code Geass R2
4th Vampire Knight
3rd Allison to Lillia
2nd Itazura na Kiss
1st Macross Frontier
Thoughts
You know Library Wars would be here if there was a sub at this time, but such is life… In any case Code Geass R2 is a solid 5th only because I love shoujo and that sexy VF-25 a whole lot more. Vampire Knight snatches 4th because Rollo is no substitute for Cecile or Cornelia. Keep your green haired alien witch who probably has a male snatch and that decorative bunny girl. I want my women with intelligence who can kick arse in mass production suits. Besides Rollo has not achieved Ali status yet…also I hate Pizza Hut freaking Costco gives better bang for the buck. Also I like the fangirl madness in Vampire Knight, and it doesn’t hurt that this Zero has a gun and can hit the broadside of barn door. YukixZero forever! Allison to Lillia appeals to my inner aviation junkie, and I have been into aviation and fighters for far longer than my time in anime, besides Lolison is so cute I nearly died. Bonus points for pandering to the historical nut within me.
Itazura na Kiss if fucking win and gold I care not that animation looks dated Kotoko is just that awesome, also I need a long over due dose of kansai-ben. I want to see Kotoko destroy Naoki and kick that ingrate younger brother into a wood chipper. Her black mailing stratagem was brilliant and deliciously evil. Its good olde fashioned shoujo and I like it. Macross Frontier is my top pick for this season. Great production values, Nyan-Nyan song, Ranka, and that lovely VF-25 make Macross Frontier the stand out series for me. Besides I am so starved for yuri that if I stare hard enough Alto-hime really looks like a girl…also he looks prettier than most female leads (pony tail, almost yuri, and picture above) which fills me with awe and confusion at the same time.
Extrange’s Picks
5th: Code Geass R2
4th: Macross Frontier
3rd: Kurenai
2nd: Soul Eater
1st: Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
Thoughts
What we are talking here is what series will grab you from the first episode. So that’s why Code Geass R2 is ranked 5th on my list, since it’s a second season of a previous show and it will only make sense for the viewers who saw the first season. That doesn’t mean this first episode; by the contrary, all the C.C. and Kallen lovers went into moe worshiping mode with some of the fanservice and plot twists of the new season. Also for similar reason, Macross Frontier is only ranked 4th, since the first episode was aired online 2 months ago. But the episode they aired now has more scenes and reveals more character development (like Shirley’s bitchyness) and that was enough to increase it’s rank.
In the third position we have Kurenai, a show who looked like your average anime from the trailers but has revealed to be a nice addiction to the list of Spring animes. Among it’s assets it has the most quirky OP from the latest 5 years, a chronological ordering from the event of the manga (which makes it easier for the viewers to understand the plot) and a Tsundere loli, and everyone likes lolis who treat you like a slave. In second place we have Soul Eater, the new animation from BONES. And I must tell you, choosing BONES to animate Soul Eater was the right choice. The animation style grabs the viewer from the first minute, which is enhanced by the peculiar environment that the anime depicts. The amount of fanservice (read that as Blair’s boobs) makes the male population happy, combined by the well developed battle scenes. And this is not all; Soul Eater has 2 versions of the same ep aired in different times, which makes you wonder how BONES will exploit this feature.
Remember what I’ve said in my first lines of text? What we are talking here is about the first episodes who can grab better the viewer’s attention. The winner of this ranking can’t be other than Kyouran Kazoku Nikki: a guy married with a 20 year old alien neko loli and has as sons a abused young girl, a pink jellyfish, a Predator, a talking lion and a gay dude who tries to flirt with the father. Just from reading this it makes anyone want to watch the anime just to see WTF is this.
Conclusion
A quick summary shows that many of us have differing views on what is good or not. However, we seem to agree (except Crusader) that Kurenai is a show worth watching. In addition, Itazura no kiss, Library Wars, Code Gease R2, Vampire Knight and Macross Frontier have repeated nominations within the blog. They might be worth a look. So, tell us your top five.

Kurenai surprise, its like the most unexpected popular series of the season. ^^ I may just blog my 5 as well, hmm
Ryan A added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 7:18 amDang are you guys blogging every show that’s airing? lol
Hm top 5, well considering I haven’t picked up that many shows
1. Soul Eater
2. Vampire Knight
3. Itazura na Kiss
4. Special A
5. Da Crap or Junjou Romantica 8D;;
(mainly because those are equally bad on different levels to me)
1. Itazura na Kiss
2. Kurenai
3. Soul Eater
4. Vampire Knight
5. Kanokon
Has anyone subbed Library Wars? I really want to try it…
voodoomage added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 7:53 am5.Special A
4.Kyou Kara Maou
3.Vampire Knight
2.Nabari no Ou
1.Macross Frontier
1. Code Geass R2
2. Macross Frontier
3. Library War (just as soon as it gets subbed)
And that’s all I’m watching that’s currently airing. Apart from BLASSREITER, but I wouldn’t put that on a top five list.
And I suppose Pailsen Files is being released at the moment, and I’m watching that, though technically it’s not ‘airing’.
IKnight added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 8:09 am@Iknight: BLASSREITER? -.-Y Bad 3d is bad.
GARLolicon Extrange added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 8:15 amInstead of stalking this place all the time,I’ll comment on something for once =D
1.Code Geass R2 - by a whisker
2.Soul Eater - It ate my soul
3.Allison to Lillia - Nothing I could complain about
4.Nabari no Ou - Homoerotic teasers (0.o)?
5.Itazura na Kiss - Beating out Special A
Haha Blassreiter?!
I have limited exposure so far, but from early showings:
5: Kamen no Maid Guy
4: Nabari no Ou
3: Soul Eater
2: Code Geass R2
1: Macross Frontier
My picks so far are super duper shounen, but outside of the top 2, I don’t know if they will hold. I haven’t watched too much so Kamen no Maid Guy sneaks in, and Nabari no Ou had a pretty nice first episode (although the manga makes me wonder how good the rest of the series will be). Soul Eater has a pretty good storyline, and with the super stylish animation, it should be a winner. Code Geass continues to entertain greatly, even if it is a bit silly when you step back and think about the plot too much. Finally, Macross has to have a bigger budget than the previous 4 shows combined, and it is put to good use.
Kabitzin added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 8:47 am5. Nabari no Ou - liked the first episode a lot, interesting premise
4. Kurenai - I see a lot of potential for this show
3. Soul Eater - one of the best first episodes of the season
2. Macross Frontier - will battle for #1 spot all season
1. Code Geass R2 - Episode 2 was so good
I’m still waiting for subs on Library Wars so I have not seen that yet. Honorable mentions go to Allison and Lilia, Special A, Vampire Knight, and Itzura na Kiss. All 3 honorable mentions have potential to sky rocket up my list.
bravejaf added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 9:44 am5. Nabari no Ou- This one got subbed kinda late so it has yet to sink in. Love the character designs and the nutty opener.
4. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki- I love high Octane anime like this. Also the jokes are easy to get and don’t require vast knowledge of Japanese culture. Tama-chan as the Killer Biodroid is good too.
3. Kurenai- Some of the older peoples character designs look like their mouths are on the sides of their heads but tsundere loli is just too cute. Also seems like it has a lot of ground to cover in terms of plot development.
2. Soul Eater- I was so afraid that Soul was gonna have some annoying naruto voice (spiky hair, headband and jacket. always trying to look cool…hmmm) but he actually sounded pretty badass. And yeah it has style alot of it.
1. Code Geass R2- Just sucks me in too quick for anything else to be here. Sure it’s got downfalls but the hook is just too good to beat. I marathoned the first season so I had less time to notice the shows pitfalls.
Library wars might be up here if subs had come out. I have Kamen no Maid Guy and Itazura no Kiss downloaded but have yet to watch them. Special A was mediocre. Zettai Karen Children is a very solid 6th place and I think it will go far if it keeps up the quirky humor. Might check out himitsu now that impz is recommending it. Lastly, I like weird anime and philosophical anime, so I want some subs for Kaiba. I’m pretty sure I can get over the animation if the content is meaty enough.
taka added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 11:00 amI said it once, I’ll say it again. I love the dual post idea. My list from what I’ve seen so far:
5. _____
4. Kanokon
3. Soul Eater
2. Code Geass R2
1. Macross Fronteir
heh, so sue me, I don’t have something worth placing in the fifth spot. I did watch To Love-Ru, but again, nothing worth placing in the 5th spot. Anyway…
Kanokon is downright sexy. Next, Soul Eater has the most unique and vibrant animation and style of any shonen anime I’ve ever seen. Maka’s voice grates on my ears, but I might just stick with it. The action was also pretty great. Code Geass gets my number two spot because it feels too familiar. It’s still great, but it didn’t wow me like Macross Frontier. Even though we still haven’t seen the ‘real’ first episode of Fronteir (that comes with the DVD release and is said to be 32 minutes long, supposedly a combined version of the two already shown), what we have seen is nothing short of amazing. The music is great, the 3D animation is done expertly, and the show has just had some truly thrilling action sequences. Crusader is right, the sexy VF-25 beats out anything from Geass. The great thing about Macross is that it has an actual decent blend of mecha and romance. I’m eager to see which songstress Alto hooks up with (why not both?!) almost as much as I am eager to see the Skull Squadron blow the hell out of some aliens.
Amuro1X added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 11:35 am#1: Soul Eater
#2: Code Geass
#3: Kure-nai
#4: Nabari no Ou
#5: SA
I lack words to describe just how utterly unsatisfying were the first episodes of Crystal Blaze and RD Sennou Chousashitsu. Especially the latter. I also somehow ended up watching Kure-nai instead of Allison to Lillia. Kure-nai just won me over completely with the gorgeous art and the somewhat bizzare plot. It was unexpected, to say the least. Uhh, Toshokan Sensou? Now, I might be on the losing side of the argument on this one, but the first episode felt like outgrown sneakers. You want to take them off as soon as you’re done putting them on. But then, the season has only just begun, so I’ll refrain from delving too deep, seeing as how this is all based on first impressions only anyway.
…with the tiny exception of Soul Eater. Damn, to say the thing’s an epitome of Extraordinary would be an understatement. Wow.
Myu added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 11:40 amTop 5:
1) Kurenai :
Hands down best show this season, can’t wait for more! I think It has some of the best animation I’ve ever seen in anything short of a feature animated movie and I love the Red Garden esque feel to the chr. design and atmosphere (was a giant Red Garden fan)
2) Code Geass R2:
It’s more of the greatness that last season left us with
3) Soul Eater:
Brilliant animation from Bones and great first episode give this show a lot of promise
4) Special A:
Gives off an Ouran vibe that I just can’t not love
5) Kanokon/Itazura na Kiss:
2 very different shows making a tie. Love the super ecchi-ness of Kanokon

5) Itazura no Kiss. Guilty pleasure, hard to justify, but me likes.
4) Kurenai. Very solid start, and I think I’m gonna like the show.
3) Macross Frontier. High-quality animation for someone who started anime life with Robotech.
2) Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. A total surprise to me, never had that on my radar.
1) Geass R2. It simply IS so good. Awesome.
Honorable mentions to Druaga (awesome ep1, so-so ep2, let’s see) and even Blassreiter (I’m ashamed to list it, but I like it so far. Sue me)
Mentar added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 1:25 pmMy top 5, given that I haven’t watched all of the first episodes:
1. Soul Eater-because I love the manga and BONES never fails.
2. Library Wars-can’t wait for subs to come out so I can actually understand. XD
3. Code Geass R2-this season is off to a great start, and I can’t wait to watch more of it.
4. Allison to Lillia-Allison definitely wins me over.
5. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki-so had the WTF factor that is hilarious.
I didn’t like the shoujo for this season because of the way that the studios handled the original premises. Could have been so much better. >_<. Macross, Kurenai, and Itazura na Kiss don’t make it because I haven’t bothered to watch them yet. Nabari and Amatsuki are pretty decent compared to other shounen series but they can’t compete with the really strong ones.

R2 justs beats out Macross Frontier by a nose though, mostly because of episode 02.
Kaioshin Sama added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 2:47 pm1. Code Geass - worth it just so /a/ is more entertaining.
2. Nabari no Ou - manga rocks, anime adaptation doing a good job so far.
3. Soul Eater - don’t care if plot is minimal, fighting choreography in episode 1 was epic.
4. xxxHolic Kei - love the manga, great seeing it as an anime.
5. Vampire Knight - Kaname and Zero are hot. Yeah, that’s it.
Out of what I’ve watched so far.
Ruk added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 3:41 pm5. Nabari no Ou - It has a lot of promise.
4. Vampire Knight - Yay! Bishies & Blood!
3. xxxHOLiC Kei - Because I’m a CLAMP fangirl.
2. Soul Eater - Awesome graphics and fresh shounen feel.
1. Code Geass R2 - I support the rebellion!
That was actually tougher than I thought it would be. I really liked Allison & Lillia & Kure-nai too. Also dying to get my hands on subs for Library Wars & Himitsu as I was interested in those from the previews. This season has been great thus far.
Caraniel added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 4:11 pm5. Vampire Knight - Hesistant about Special A and this… Frankly, I’ve seen mangas for both, and the Special A animation just seems weird and out of place to me. So VK gets boosted up.
4. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki - Such a weird series. Haven’t seen anything like it.
3. Soul Eater - GREAT animation. Skeptical that it will keep me watching though.
2. Toshokan Sensou - Pulled me in even without watching with subs.
1. Nabari no Ou - Look Below
Hands down, Nabari no Ou. Can I even start to explain? It pulls you in right from the start. Even their “ninja” techniques are WAY better than the ones in Naruto. It’s perfect, love the animation, and the OP and the ED.
Hoshi added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 5:29 pmI must be ‘growing old’ in the hobby, so I’m barely able to follow three series, never mind five, but given more time, the ones I’d watch for the season would be, in no particular order:
5. Macross Frontier
4. Library Wars
3. Kyouran Kazoku Nikki
2. Code Geass R2
1. Kanokon
Although I have some compelling reasons to watch the four other series, some friends were surprised I’d selected a fanservice show in Kanokon. I’m first to admit being a massive Kawasumi Ayako fangirl though (been following her career since Outlaw Star and To Heart), so hearing her in this role is… A change. I think countless braincells died screaming into the Warp.
Myssa Rei added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 6:03 pmIsn’t it weird how Calawain’s list only have series with the names started in K or C?
Mone added these pithy words on Apr 15 08 at 7:57 pm5.Soul Eater - I liked the manga, and the animation makes it even more entertaining to watch.
4.Vampire Knight - I follow the manga, and if they continue to go by it, I’ll keep watching.
3.Library Wars - I wasn’t expecting to like it. That’s why I like it even more.
2.Nabari no Ou - The animation and story is somewhat intriguing.
1.Code Geass R2 - It’s the show I was looking forward to the most, and it hasn’t disappointed me yet.
I’ll give a special mention to Kyou Kara Maou. I haven’t been able to watch the 3rd series, so I can’t rank it, but I’m looking forward to watching it. Speaking of which, I haven’t been able to watch much recently, so besides my top 2, the rest may fall out of place when I get caught up.

2nd: Kure-nai
1st: xxxHolic Kei
I’ve only seen Vampire Knight, Golgo 13, Macross, Code Geass and Toshokan Sensou. Not enough to actually make a top 5 ranking, so I’ll do a top 3 instead, for my 3 most favourite shows of the season based on their first eps.
3 Code Geass
2 Macross F
1 Toshokan Sensou
God that was a tough decision…I like all 3 of them nearly equally. Macross and Geass are on par with plot and story, but Macross wins with better animation and music. Sorry Geass x.x Also Toshokan Sensou wins top place because I’ve never ever rewatched a freaking raw 6 times in my entire life. I can’t wait for ep 2. Or a sub for that matter.

1.Macross F- I fell in love with macross ever since the 1st movie as well as Macross 7. Their trademark: alien invasion, love triangle, music and mecha, its all in their latest. What sets this macross apart: great graphics, beautiful characters and a totally different style from your typical anime…
2.Blassreiter-Im probably the only one who will put this in the top 5…What i love about it: maturity and seriousness, mysterious characters, interesting plot, cool aliens.
3.Code Geass R2- I loved the 1st season, the plot, the maturity at times and its damn intriguing. Downside: Lelouch is a bit too sissy for my liking and its damn cheesy. With clamp, no doubt but that.
4.Neo Angelique Abyss- Am i the only one who watches this? If u think its just some lame shoujo game cutout, youre wrong…it delivers much better than u think. I was surprised it was that good as well. It should be checked out.
5.Tower of Druaga- The only reason i watch this: to see what happens to the characters…if it dosent turn out the way i wanted it to then, im out.
