Zero Banzai!

Another edge of your seat ride this week, as the situation continues exactly where it left off last week as the Black Knights seek a way to escape Babel Tower. An action-filled 20 minutes that finally explains what happened at the cave, but opens up even more questions for the future with new geass users.

Episode Summary:

Resuming the action at Babel Tower, units of the Brittanian Army begin their assault as the Black Knights attempt to stall for time so Zero can get his hands on building plans. The scene cuts to the cave of episode 25, and we are shown Suzaku barely dodging Lelouch’s shot, charging in, and subduing him. Kallen flees as Suzaku takes Lelouch and brings him before the Emperor, whom he has a proposition for. In return for capturing Lelouch he wants the Emperor to appoint him as one of the elite Knights of Round (their grammar, not mine). The Emperor accepts and approaches Lelouch, whose eye is covered by Suzaku, and activates his geass which erases and rewrites Lelouch’s memories.

Back at the tower, Lelouch lures out a Brittanian pilot and uses geass on him to secure his Knightmare. With access to the Brittanian’s locations Lelouch is able to precisely order the Black Knights to strike back, and they begin to push the Brittanians back. Meanwhile, Kallen goes to Lelouch’s location to confront him personally, pulling out her gun. Another scene switch puts us with the Emperor bringing Suzaku to the shrine-looking place the Emperor was often found during season one. The Emperor corrects Suzaku though, saying that this place is instead a weapon to overthrow the gods, the Sword of Akasha. Back at Babel, Kallen confronts Lelouch, asking him if the only reason she is following him is because he used his geass on her. He denies that he used it to convince her and placates her somewhat, but she asserts she believes in Zero, not Lelouch.

At this point Carares launches a full-scale assault on the tower from above, seeking to force the Black Knights to flee through the only escape route, where his forces are waiting. Lelouch knows this and is confident in his plans for victory, but a single enemy Knightmare has destroyed many of his units already, and he begins to panic. The unit eventually breaks through and attacks Urabe, Kallen, and Lelouch, and is somehow able to instantaneously transport itself around the battlefield (think flash steps in Bleach or the blink spell in the array of Warcraft games). Urabe, in an attempt to take down the enemy stabs through his own Knightmare to hit the unit in self sacrifice, but only damages it slightly. But that bought enough time for C.C. to finish setting up her explosives however, and Lelouch sets them off, sending the building tumbling.

The explosion was set up precisely, and it destroys the Brittanian units attacking from above and falls down upon the main Brittanian force of Carares, destroying it and killing the Governor-General. One of Cornelia’s knights, Guilford, arrives and takes command of the Brittanian forces. As he is doing that however, a broadcast comes in all over the world as Zero announces his return. As the world looks on, he broadcasts from the Chinese consulate and declares how disappointed he is that the world is still the same and how he had to be revived because of it. He declares that the room he is standing in right now is the start of the new United States of Japan, as approved by the geass’d Chinese consul. Outside the embassy Li tells the Brittanian army to get lost as the teleporting Knightmare from the tower approaches. Out steps Rollo who says he’s here to kill Zero, and the geass symbol lights up in his eye.

Impressions:

cg01.jpg

We finally are told what happened in the cave at the end of last season, as superman Suzaku (remember the Mao episode where he was running up walls? Yeah…retarded) dodges a bullet and then subdues Lelouch. I kind of understand Kallen running off, even though I was disappointed, it must have come as quite a shock and she felt quite betrayed. Don’t worry, I forgive you.
cg02.jpg

And we once again confirm Suzaku’s status as one of the most hated anime characters of all time. Seriously, I laugh every time this guy is around because for a fellow who supposedly holds such high ideals for himself and holds such distaste for Lelouch’s methods, he seems willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish his own goals. A ruthless bastard hypocrite is always worse then someone who’s just a ruthless bastard. Maybe it’s just my deep-seeded bias against him from last season, where I was constantly disgusted by his blind idealism. Personally, I’m much more of a realist.
cg03.jpg

As hinted in the OP, the Emperor has a geass as well, and rewriting memories does sound like a useful tool to have. Not quite as subtle as telling someone what to do as an order, but a skilled rewrite could accomplish that much more subtly. I’m going to go ahead and guess V.V. was responsible for this one, as she is seen in the ED with the Emperor. I guess he hasn’t used it much though, if it’s not always on at this point, hell that would be really inconvenient walking around rewriting people’s memories unintentionally.
cg04.jpg

It’s good to see the commanding Zero back in action with his “just as planned” face. Once again drawing parallels with last season in episode 2, he uses his geass to obtain a Sutherland and obtains the Brittanian positions in order to precisely command his troops. I love the strategy part of CG, even if it’s often one sided.
cg05.jpg

Some more of the supernatural answers are revealed here, leaving me to guess a few things. The Emperor said that someone took the Area 11 bait, but wasn’t sure whether it was C.C., suggesting there are more than her and V.V. Combine that with the fact that the place they were at was a weapon to overthrown the gods, one would assume the Emperor is trying to fight against the race of C.C., perhaps with some help from dissident V.V.
cg06.jpg

It looks like Kallen and Lelouch’s relationship is a bit rocky, but it has recovered somewhat as he seems to have convinced her that she hasn’t just been controlled by him. Which is actually the truth for once, and in his ultimate brilliance he manages to make a joke as an icebreaker. Well played sir, you enabled us to get a closeup shot of her rack once again. I would have used that for the screenshot here but it really didn’t convey any of what was going on in the scene and would have no context unfortunately =(
cg07.jpg

Heh, sometimes Lelouch isn’t such a bad guy…maybe. Whether he meant that he didn’t want to lose soldiers needlessly or he actually cared about them is hard to say, but I’d wager a guess that it’s probably a bit of both. Whatever the meaning, it did convince Urabe to eventually give his life to save Lelouch, and seemed to have soothed Kallen a bit as well.
cg08.jpg

Lelouch is quick enough to figure it out quickly that it’s something beyond physics, and I was already 90 percent sure it was Rollo inside that thing considering the circumstances. The unit came out of nowhere, Rollo had disappeared, and the Brittanian commanders mentioned nothing of a special unit. And as the end of the episode revealed to us, it is likely that Rollo’s geass is teleportation or something related to that.
cg09.jpg

Well this Governor-General didn’t even last as long as Clovis did. See this is what happens when you appoint racists instead of intelligent commanders to oversee your territories: you get completely wiped out by Zero. Score up another victory for the good guys.
cg10.jpgcg10.jpgcg10.jpgcg10.jpgcg10.jpgcg10.jpg

The wide range of reactions to Zero’s pronouncement were seriously priceless. The highlights first being my buddy Diethard, one of my favorite characters, it’s like he just won the lottery he’s so ecstatic. Then there’s serious business Suzaku and adorable loli Kaguya. But by far the best is table girl, who with some ungodly horrible grandma haircut she has that face, harking back to when Euphemia died. Oh it was mighty delicious.
cg11.jpg

This guy has a really annoying voice, but thankfully he was stupid enough to let Zero in to talk to him so he could get geass’d and used like a proper tool. Zero’s speech was quite wonderful as usual, and I was glad to have him back. Once again, the way Jun Fukuyama just delivers these lines with such relish makes this show just purely fun to watch.
cg12.jpg

There’s definitely something unstable about this guy’s head, maybe he really liked playing the little brother. From the way this ended one would expect he was going to teleport into the embassy and try to kill Lelouch, but then again in the previews they are hanging out at Ashford again. Maybe it’s flashbacks though, wouldn’t be the first time. I’d like to see him face off against Li in a sword fight, just so Li can skewer the hell out of him.

MI6 Field Report (Crusader’s Impression):

Name’s Rollo, James Rollo. Keeper of the Bridge of Death. To me you must answer these questions three, ere the other side ye see.

What is the Capital of Assyria?

Ah so the hated Lulu was pwned by Suzaku Hero of Britannia, I for one applaud how Karen was seen off in fairly short order while The Blighty Emperor pronounced judgment on Lulu the Bastard, and the screams of Lulu doth rung out across the lands inciting fear upon Lulu lovers every where causing them to pull their hair and weep like children. It is not surprising as Lulu the Bastard is the epitome of a Marty Stu whose only purpose is to allow tossers to indulge in a personal power fantasy. After all Lulu is the perfect Marty Stu: power over people, having women throw themselves at you for being “smart,” killing your dad to sleep with your mum (CC is his Erstaz mother if she is not Marianne herself), and being a physically weak as a stack of crackers yet still able to indulge in sis-con. Indeed much of Lulu the Bastard’s popularity can be traced to his speeches that are akin to one Austrian Corporal who failed to become an artist in Vienna, and the seduction of being able to have the power fantasy that lesser men can only dream of.

snapshot20080413123808.jpg
Clearly Suzaku is the top…where is your Zero now?

snapshot20080413123832.jpg
I call it turning in the murderer of Euphie to the wide open arms of Justice.

snapshot20080413123922.jpg
Don’t worry your virginity will soon be removed.

Kudos to Suzaku, Hero of The Blighty Empire, for turning in the renegade prince Lulu. Unlike the more stupid elevens Suzaku was given the choice between the lovely and compassionate Euphie, the dour Blighty Emperor Charles, or the demagogue Lulu. He wisely chose Euphie, but then had to settle for the Blighty Emperor after Lulu killed his first choice. Either way the elevens are going to bow down to a member of the Blighty Royal Family and due to their support Lulu has become more Japanese eleven, now that he can easily order the oppress the Chinese into becoming cannon fodder for his cause, all that remains for his transformation is to dispense use panties. What is so bad about selling out the friend who killed his own sister? Any who argue against are clearly in favor murderous brothers and are no allies of justice or decency.

New Pilots Wanted!

As for the leader board Rollo, pilot of Vincent, has cemented himself at top dog in the rankings by killing off Urabe the Coward. Same rules apply full name kills only get mentioned, too bad for Lulu that Carares had no last name.

Next Episode:
cg13.jpgcg14.jpgcg15.jpg

Well somehow we are back at Ashford academy with Rollo and a Lelouch with a clear left eye, and in the dialog Lelouch asserts he has to deal with his fake brother first.

I KNEW Rollo was up to no good.

Nagato added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 8:30 pm

URABEEEEEEEEEEE ;_;

I can’t wait until Toudou gets released and starts avenging all his fallen comrades. Though I wonder who he’ll blame for the deaths of his friends, the Britannians? Or the man who abandoned them when he was needed the most, Zero.

Shirukii added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 9:25 pm

@Nagato

When he started making trouble in the neighborhood…er, wrong show. Anyways yeah Rollo from the very beginning was shady seeing as how Lelouch never had a brother.

@Shirukii

I dunno, Toudou seems pretty reasonable and not likely to go off and seek vengeance but I’m not sure. I wonder when they are gonna get around to breaking their old buddies out of jail though.

P.S. Cross-commenting MADNESS!

Calawain added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 10:01 pm

I really wonder if he could go back to school as if nothing had happened. Villetta is there, and she was one of the first to figure out that Lelouch was really Zero :/

Nekonron added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 10:13 pm

@Nagato
Of course Rollo is up to no good, he’s a Blighty Commando heir to the sneaky knife weilding killers of the SAS and MI6. He is fast on his way to being the Ali al Sarshes of this series. Long may he fight and many shall be his frags!

@Shirukii
Urabe was a coward who abandoned his buddies when things turned to shit it is fitting that Rolo kills him. Now Urabe will no longer have to go crawling back to his so called “friends” and face the shame of having to explain his failure. Weep no for Brave Sir Urabe for Rolo has spared him the humilation that was his due.

Toudou shall so fall to the might of Rollo, failing that Cornelia, failing that Guilford, and failing that Suzaku. Zero was to blame for their defeat and his subsequent imprisonment quite why they don’t execute Toudou in some wooded are is quite beyond me…

@Calawain
No you FOOL this is THHHHHAAAAATTTTTTT!

@Nekonron
Villetta is a spy in league with Rollo! Or maybe she couldn’t find work elsewhere.

Crusader added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 10:21 pm

Suzaku ~ betray his father then betray his friend, all around he is doing a great job of being a traitor. But really, he and Lelouch are now the same, they can sacrifice anyone for the sake of revenge, be it a friend or a relative (except Lelouch’s Nunally of course). By the way, true idealists start a revolution. Rollo=Jumper

kai_y added these pithy words on Apr 13 08 at 11:08 pm

haha the scoreboard’s up again!

and kai_y, please… the last thing code geass needs is a jumper. if rollo ends up like hayden christensen… man… not much else needs to be said.

justam added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 12:37 am

I really found Suzaku howesome.Yes he’s selling out his friend and he doesn’t care.He has a goal and like Zero is willing to do everything in order to reach it.

It’s what I like about Zero.The will to kill anybody and destroy anything that stand in the way.Like the good old communists, he is totally ruthless and he will not hesitate to commit atrocities like destroying a tower and killing hundreds of people in the process if it helps him.It deserves admiration.They are true men of will, I tell you.And he doesn’t hide in a cave.

And the beauty of all this is that they don’t hide.Yes they are bastards and evil but Suzaku and Zero believe they are necessary bastards.

ZeusIrae added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 6:16 am

@Nekonron

It’s probably flashbacks and they are going to show what happened with Lelouch and Rollo in that year they spent at school.

@Crusader

How was Urabe a coward? As far as I know killing yourself to take out an enemy was considered honorable in that culture. And also, once again Rollo didn’t kill him, he killed himself, if anything Urabe gets a -1 frag credit and Rollo gets nothing~

@kai_y/justam

You know I doubt his ability is something simple like just teleporting around, but who knows. I never saw the movie Jumper but it looked kind of silly.

@Zeuslrae

I agree that they both use similar methods, but my point was that Suzaku tries to shield himself in really high idealism whereas Lelouch really does not. In fact he often basks in his own brilliance about it.

Calawain added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 7:41 am

This episode reduced me to a heap of fangirl goo. Yay for having Lulu back on Zero form! Yay for Rollo being an interesting addition to the mix, he’s bound to be a bit insane all the Geass users are! Also yay for Suzaku being an opportunist bastard, he’s the character we love to hate, may he sink ever lower in his attempts to get revenge / make the world a better place (whatever comes 1st).

Glad to see the leaderboard is back Crusader. Looking forward to seeing it evolve over the course of the series. I also hope Rollo becomes the Ali of Code Geass, that would be pure entertainment!

Caraniel added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 7:44 am

i don’t know i think Rollo’s geass is a bit overpowered i mean he can use it on and off a KF also from the episode it shows he can use it as many times as he likes ~_~;

Onizuka added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 8:22 am

@ Onizuka. Arent all the Geass like that? Lulu’s could be turned on & off at will at the beginning too and doesnt have use limit (although he can only use it once per person I suppose). The Emperor’s can also be turned on & off and I’m sure Mao’s could at the beginning too. We have no clue exactly what Rollo’s Geass does yet, we can only speculate at this point.

Caraniel added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 8:38 am

It’s pretty interesting to see such dueling perspectives on this series. I think I’m going to enjoy this ride.

In this case, I agree with Crusader:

“I call it turning in the murderer of Euphie to the wide open arms of Justice.”

There’s a bit of a line, and Lelouch crossed it long ago. As far as I can tell, Suzaku isn’t a ruthless murderer, but he’s the one that gets flack from people?

Amuro1X added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 9:12 am

@kai_y
Revolutions suck, cause more problems than they solve. There is no more Japan only Area 11 so Suzaku is betraying no one for there are no more Japanese.

@justam
Look forward to more competitors. May Rollo continue his streak!

@ZeusIrae
Suzaku is great now that his courtly love was all but destroyed robbing him of just about everything he held dear. Let us rejoice that there are two evil or near evil men at eachother’s throats! For when one falls the other will be so weak that a mere child can deliver the coup de grace.

@Calawain
Rollo forced Urabe’s desperate tactics, and banzai charging for no benefit while accepted Japanese doctrine makes for poor strategy that all real soldaten despise and loathe. Urabe ran for his life when things went bad, and once the prospect of seeing his former comrades again became a distinct possibility he feared facing them and hence lost to Rollo. Urabe accomplished next to nothing and failed to take out Rollo. Urabe failed and died for nothing. Rollo added gloriously to Urabe’s ignominious defeat by negating his original intentions so Rollo gets a frag and two almost raped for having put the fear into Lulu and Karen. Hug you pillow of Urabe’s likeness if you must but Rollo fragged him.

Lulu still makes it out as if he is building a better world, so he hasn’t abandoned his idealistic pitch just yet, let us not forget that he put Nunnally before everything else. Such sentimentality has no place in the annals of megalomania.

@Carniel
Hooray for Evil for good is dumb! I too hope that Rollo is the heir to Ali and that he will prove to be thorn on the side of Lulu for a long time…

@Amuro1X
This is going to be fun…

Suzaku is a man without anything his beloved whose cause was just was murdered and her name stained with the dishonor that Lulu heaped upon her. He will avenge her death and see to it that Lulu and his Black Knights will feel the fire and steel of his brand of justice. He will take from Lulu everything and give him nothing…

Crusader added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 10:34 am

How come the Emperor’s eyes has geass on both of them while the other geass users has only on one eye ?

Mystic Girl added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 12:10 pm

@Onizuka/Caraniel

Well the geass of the Emperor and Lelouch require eye contact, so if Rollo can physically teleport himself around (including the knightmare) that’s something totally different. Shirukii had an interesting idea over at his write-up that it wasn’t him teleporting so much as him making people think he was still in the same place while he was moving. But again even for that he’s not looking into their eyes. We shall see how it plays out.

@Amuro1X

Well he’s certainly plowed through many Elevens in his various rages and operations and he gutted his own father, so there’s some dispute there. And to be honest being a traitor to your country and selling out your friend for personal gain rank higher on the list of douchebaggery than murdering NPCs at least.

@Crusader

I still don’t know where you get this idea that Urabe was running away. If you have an episode/scene to point to where he did so please inform me. Kind of undermines your conclusions having a lack of it. And to me the circumstances of a frag don’t really matter at all, whether he forced him to off himself doesn’t matter. This leaderboard is based off FPS games, and I’ll use CS as an example. If I was trying to throw a grenade to kill the both of us and I only killed myself I’d get a negative score and the guy who survived would get jack.

@Mystic Girl

I don’t remember for sure, but didn’t Mao have it in both eyes?

Calawain added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 4:07 pm

I found the map at the start interesting.
Britannia is north and south america plus new zealand (ha ha ha ha)
The european union is all of europe + russia
The chinese federation has a sizeable chunk of asia
and Australia is still it’s own country O_o wtf? I mean awesome, i guess no one could be bothered. Or somehow we turned into a super power with no one noticing…. I’m going to go with no one cbf
Go team cyan!

Theres a clip out there from the CG game on PS2(?) one of the bad ends has rollo teleport infront of you and slash you to death. Kid’s a psycho.

Gravmech added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 5:36 pm

@Calawain
Urabe was in the thick of battle yet somehow he miraculously survives and isn’t arrested…Karen has an excuse, Lulu has an excuse. So what is Urabe’s considering just about every other guy got nabbed except for those honorless gaijin and Sayako? Urabe beat a very brave retreat is the only plausible explanation. When danger reared its ugly head he bravely turned about and fled. Bravely taking to his feet Urabe beat a very brave retreat, Bravest of the Brave Sir Urabe. He survived and escaped where the likes of Toudou failed curious is it not? Retreat requires running away, and in his case self preservation played a part, if not then why apologize in the first episode prior to jumping blimp?

Crusader added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 5:45 pm

@Senfen

Who wants a big ass desert anyways?! Yeah from the first time I laid eyes on Rollo I thought, that guy ain’t right. Loony for sure.

@Crusader

Maybe because he’s intelligent enough to evade capture? Maybe he got lucky? When your guerrilla army has failed to achieve a quick victory it’s much better to retreat and regroup. In fact, Zero commanded retreats several times because it was the smart tactical decision to do so. Just because Urabe was luckier than the rest, or maybe was able to defeat all the Brittanian’s nearby and escape doesn’t make him a coward. I fail to see how a tactically sound retreat is cowardice. The Japanese forces that day were in the thousands assaulting an urban center, of course the Brittanian’s couldn’t capture them all…

Calawain added these pithy words on Apr 14 08 at 9:18 pm

@Calawain
Urabe was part of a unit, his buddies all got nabbed but he got away as a “soldier” and follower of Toudou he sure had some gall to abandon his captain and save his own hide. If his unit was wiped out I would understand. If he and his battle buddy got out I would understand, but he evaded capture alone meaning he either abandoned his comrades or Toudou made a huge tactical error in ordering that every man had to escape for himself. Given that the rest of Urabe’s mates got nabbed I say that Urabe left his comrades behind. this to me is shameful as he got out by himself while letting the rest of his unit get captured. If you must retreat you do so in good order and maintain unit cohesion, not sure about you but I find it disgraceful to leave comrades behind and judging by their current state Toudou and his gang were not mortally wounded enough to warrant the loss of unit cohesion. That’s my 2 cents on the matter.

God, so Suzaku betrayed his country?
I do not think so. Since when people are such patriots??? Oh, poor Japan got conquered…I don’t think that the fact that Suzaku is Japanese should prevent him from entering a foreign army.

The same goes for Lelouch. Isn’t he betraying his own country too? And just show me where he actually cares for Japanese people, he is just using them to avenge his mother, and to become a new king! No different from his father.

hhmm but i would have to disagree with Rollo’s geass,i consider it more along the line of a time shift.somewhat(meaning he can see or predict what will happen,and thus he is able to react faster than his opponent.)well with what i have seen.

oohh..p.s. keep up the good work

harpiarua added these pithy words on Apr 26 08 at 1:28 am

Heehee. “And the screams of Lulu doth rung out across the lands inciting fear upon Lulu lovers everywhere…” Yeah. I really think Lulu should end up with Kallen, though C.C.’s chances are looking pretty good now. The last time I checked, C.C. got her memories of Geass erased (or something like that) and her personality went back to like it was before she got her Geass. LelouchxKallen forever!!
