There are so many gakuen (school life) + shoujo (girls) animes this season, many of which are adapted from very famous and/or popular manga. Which would you – the shoujo anime lover – choose, I wonder?
Here, I’ve gathered three popular shoujo + gakuen animes this season and made a comparison between them. Because I’m a very character oriented person, this post would be concentrating on the comparison of the main characters; ie. The heroine and the hero(es) of the anime. Everything is based on the first episode, so there wouldn’t be any much manga spoilers.
The three animes are, in alphabetic order: Itazura na Kiss, Special A, and Vampire Knight.
PS: Because I am naturally a very biased person, please do not expect objective opinion.
Female Leads
Best Character Design: Yuuki, Vampire Knight
Not much of a contest here. Yuuki, with her big Studio Deen animated lively eyes, wins by a big margin over the other two, although Hikari from Special A wins by a beyond gigantic margin over Kotoko of Itazura no Kiss (she’s just not pretty, much less beautiful. I don’t even find her attractive. Marginally cute, I guess). Hikari, at least, has beautiful hair, and even with her long, skinny limbs, is athletic and has a great smile.
Highest Kick Ass Factor: Hikari, Special A
In the first episode, Hikari kicked the asses of three delinquent students as easily as she yawns. Sure, she did it in conjunction with Kei, but it’s easy to see that she could do it just as easily alone. Yuuki comes in second, for the cool pose she did with her extendable weapon (staff?). From what I’ve read from the manga (not more than 20 chapters, I think) it isn’t anything more than as a useless prop, but hey, that scene was cool. The subsequent scenes were not cool, considering that she is rescued by someone else(s) again, but more on that later. As for Kotoko, well, she did lecture the arrogant Naoki despite her leaking tears, although the effect is less than stellar when the only reaction Naoki has is to smirk.
Most Accomplished: Hikari, Special A
The girl is in Special A. What more do you need? Academically, she is number 2 of the cohort. Yuuki is always sleeping in class and staying back for extra lessons, which I don’t think mean she is scholarly inclined. As for Kotoko. F class, anyone? In terms of physical accomplishments, that’s even less of a contest.
Strongest Personality: Hikari, Special A
Hikari comes in first for both her integrity and capabilities, as well as the strong fiber of her spine. Kotoko comes in second for standing up to Naoki and for facing her lack of success in the matters of love. Yuuki comes in last because boy, the one thing I dislike about Vampire Knight is how useless the girl is. She is the biggest damsel in distress since Otoro of Basilisk, but fortunately she isn’t as irritating. And she’s prettier. But seriously, will you STOP getting rescued again and again and AGAIN? (Ok, this is influenced by manga reading. So far in the anime she has only been rescued twice. TWICE in 20 minutes.)
Kawaii-est: Yuuki, Vampire Knight
Poor Kotoko. Yes, you didn’t get a single first. But I’ll rank you second here because despite your old school design, you are pretty cute. It’s a tough fight between you and Hikari, though. She’s quite cute with the faces she made at all the kya~~~~ her schoolmates utter… But oh well. She’s only occasionally cute, while Kotoko is cute as a rule. Yuuki though, she has the advantage of great character design, and in her chibi form, those big, round eyes just turn people into mush.
Most Suitable Voice: Kotoko, Itazura na Kiss
Finally I can give you one in good conscience. To be honest, all of the seiyuus for the three main characters are suitable for their characters. But Kotoko, voiced by Mizuki Nana (Hinata from Naruto, Moka Akashiya from Rosario + Vampire), brings the less than stellar character design alive. If I continue on that anime, a lot of it would be because of how the seiyuu brought Kotoko to life. Gotou Yuuko (Hikari) and Horie Yui (Yuuki) are both spectacular in their portrayals as well.
Male Leads
Best Character Design: Zero, Vampire Knight
It’s a close fight between Kaname and Zero, but because Kaname is so lushly bishounen and vaguely androgynous, I’ll go for the more manly Zero. Kei is bishie, but well, what’s with those two beetle antennas on the top of his head? As for Naoki, sure, he’s a vast improvement over the original manga, but… he can’t really stand against the others, all of whom are the top of bishie-ness.
Coolest: Kaname, Vampire Knight
I’m tempted to put Zero, but he was quite impulsive in the first episode, and his seizures at the bathroom and garden isn’t all that cool. At least, not yet. Kaname, on the other hand, has everything under control. I didn’t like Kei for this because of his blushing at the end of the first episode; that together with the half opened mouth and stunned look on his face is so completely uncool. And Naoki. … … … Who is Naoki, again?
Most Accomplished: Kei, Special A
No contest, here. With more insights on Kaname, he might be up for this (because I’m betting he can kick everyone’s and anyone’s ass), but we don’t know much of him so far. Naoki is a contender because of his academic achievements, but Kei is both academically and physically accomplished. Zero is at the bottom of his game right at this moment, so he’s last.
Most Attractive Personality: Zero, Vampire Knight
Kei comes in second because it’s so obvious he’s in love with Hikari, who is just as obviously ignorant of that fact. The trust he shows her, as well as the way he defends her even as he believes in her capabilities to take care of herself. However, his attitude of superiority is irritating, which is why he loses to Zero, who is trying so hard to control himself, and succeeding. Not to mention the fact that Zero is quite funny at times, which is a good contrast when we all know how tragic his life has been. Kaname is cool and not much else, as far as the first episode goes. As for Naoki… … … who? I don’t remember any arrogant, elitist (although mildly funny) bastard.
Most Suitable Voice: Zero, Vampire Knight
I’m trying so hard to make it non-monopoly, but I’m not succeeding. *chagrined* Kishio Daisuke (Kaname) was a close one, but Mamoru Miyano (Zero) is ranked better because there is more range for him to perform, as oppose to Kaname who remains constant. Fukuyama Jun (Kei) is a great seiyuu, but IMO I didn’t like his performance in Special A that much. That might because I thought Kei’s voice should be more… firm and less… gentle. More like, say, Lelouch than Itsuki (Rental Magica). As for Hirakawa Daisuke (Naoki), his voice seems a bit too deep for Naoki. But he didn’t have a lot of lines, so I’m reserving judgement.
Final Verdict
Personally, I enjoyed Vampire Knight the most, but I really don’t think much of the female lead except for the fact that she’s really pretty. Still, it has the best male lead, so I’ll be watching it. Special A is interesting, but somehow it’s a lot more shoujo-ish than I thought, what with the sparkling stars and rosy tints. It’s giving out the same vibes as Ouran High School Host Club, except that Ouran doesn’t take itself seriously, while I’m not sure whether the sparkles in S.A. are to be made fun of or not.
Itazura na Kiss is old school, and I think that no one can say that it doesn’t lose out in terms of design and animation. Still, the story is interesting, and it is a classic. I’m still not sure if I’ll be watching it or not, though. Just not my cup of tea, especially when I never did like slice of life.

sweet bloodYuuki mmmm. *looks at the male monopoly* ^^Man, everyone is relating S.A to Ouran, but I just don’t see it; Vampire Knight I can understand (all the Bishis want that tender Yuuki).
Shoujo ya!
@Ryan A: Well, S.A. is also about a group of ’special’ students. I agree that it’s not comparable; Ouran takes the shoujo tropes to be parodied while S.A. uses them straight.
Most Accomplished: Hikari, Special A
The girl is in Special A. What more do you need? Academically, she is number 2 of the cohort. Yuuki is always sleeping in class and staying back for extra lessons, which I don’t think mean she is scholarly inclined.
I agree that Hikari is the unquestionable winner in Most Accomplished. But I don’t think your conclusion that because Yuuki falls asleep in class means she isn’t scholarly inclined is a fair conclusion. Yuuki falls asleep because she spends most of her nighttime prowling the school grounds as a member of the security team. Yuuki sacrifices her educational opportunities in order to protect her fellow classmates not because she isn’t scholarly inclinced. (Whether she succeeds in protecting them is another issue entirely.)
Yeah, in the manga Yuuki has got an adorably cute kind of thing going on that just makes you wanna suck her blood just a little bit. She definitely seems like a sweetie but I’m worried shes going to continue to be too passive and just walk around with her guard down all the time being shocked at every plot development the other characters cause to happen.
Assuming hes not secretly a bad guy, I choose kaname as best man over zero cause zero exudes emo angst out of every pore whereas kaname is just…hurtin’. And as for Naoki, look at that screenshot under male leads. Big Jay Leno chin = instant fail.
@ D4yt1me_L4NT3RN : And as for Naoki, look at that screenshot under male leads. Big Jay Leno chin = instant fail.
Argh! I kinda wish you hadn’t said that. Or that I hadn’t read that. Because I liked Naoki’s look until you pointed out the similarity in chins. Gah. Now that’s all I’m gonna be looking at when I look at his face. Waaaa!
I agree with everything you wrote down. Exactly what I was thinking while spending the whole night watching those 3 shows. At first I thought they were trying to make Kaname bishier than Zero but when I finally saw him in VK’s episode 01, his design was fantastic (although those shadows under his eyes make him look older), I love Zero so much!! Naoki was so ugly in the manga, even if his not the most handsome lead out there, his animated version is a great improvement from the manga (really!!!) but what Kotoko sees in him I can never figure out. Miyano Mamoru was perfect for the role of Zero, just like when I first heard him in the drama CDs.
I do think you missed putting Angelique from Neo Angelique-The Abyss- (lol). Imo, Angelique would be the best character design on all the spring anime female leads. As for the kick-ass character, I can’t seemt o choose between Hikari and Yuuki (lol).
I’m weak, I’m just weak for the the silver haired bishies.
Because I have to agree with Zero as a first choice. They really have managed to make him even prettier for the anime. I was very happy with his design.
Unlike Kei. I think I actually prefer how he looks in the manga.
I’ll also agree with Hikari for strongest personality. I LOVE how kick ass she is. And how she can really hold her own. Much as I love Vampire Knight and agree that Yuuki is cute. It pisses me off how she’s always being rescued. If she can kick ass then damn well let her kick ass.
Though I have to admit if its Zero or Kaname doing the rescuing, it might be worth faking weak to get rescued ne? Particularly if there is going to be some necking involved ^-^
I haven’t gotten the chance to catch Itazura no kiss. Neither have a read the manga.
But I do read Vampire Knight and Special A and watched them both.
Eeeeep. Can someone with a Jay Leno chin be classified as a bishie?
Briar we haven’t chatted in ages I miss you!
No one’s going to comment on my remark on Kei’s beetle antennas?
I thought for sure that I would get rotten tomatoes from enraged fangirls.
@ Ryan A: I didn’t know everyone’s been comparing Ouran with S.A., though, when I wrote this post.
Great minds think alike? Seriously, though, it’s more a similiarity of tone and atmosphere rather than a similiarity of plot or characters. The presentation is very alike, whether deliberately or not.
@ Jalie: So… the sparkles are to be taken seriously? *blinks*
@ LKK: You’re right, it wasn’t fair to call Yuuki non-scholarly inclined because she falls asleep in class. What I meant to say was that she is non-scholarly inclined, and always falling asleep in class. She does sacrifice her time for her duty as a Guardian, but in terms of accomplishments, she has yet to done anything worth mentioning.
@ D4yt1me_L4NT3RN: Don’t you know that Dark and Tragic is a known magnet for avid female fans?
I do wish Yuuki would buck up. What is WRONG with the girl? She’s obviously supposed to be capable (she’s one of the two Guardians of the school, so she must have something), but why doesn’t she DO anything?
@ kai_y: Thanks! I do so love Miyano Mamoru for the role. He’s perfect as both the emo-tragic guy as well as the teenage-teasing-funny guy.
@ ThirteenSugars: I watched Neo Angelique…. and was too… … stunned… to make a reasonable critique. To be honest, though, I didn’t like Angelique’s design as much as Yuuki, or even Hikari, because there’s just something so unreal about her. The bluish white hair, the frilly clothes, the excessively sweet voice and features… I like Yuuki better. Maybe I just like white hair on guys.
And do you really think Yuuki is kick ass???????????
@ DJ: Oh yeah, I’m weak for silver haired bishies as well. *starry eyes* I remember you introducing me to the Vampire Knight manga, and I remember thinking that wow… these guys are pretty! I haven’t been reading it recently, so my impression has dimmed. Not sure how much prettier Zero is in anime as compared to the manga. I agree with you with regards to Yuuki as well. That staff of hers (whatever it’s called) is nothing more than a useless prop!
It’s too bad we haven’t been able to chat; I’ve been busy with work and haven’t been online much.
@ Briar, Ahh then you’ve missed all the revelations! You’d probably be getting frustrated with the more recent chapters.
I love Zero, but dammit I want him to stop moping and damn well do something. Technically there are no spoilers in that statement so I can’t get into trouble.
Yeah I haven’t been online too much myself. Hopefully we’ll be able to catch up one of these days. I got a promotion and there have been other stressors.
Plus I’ve been reading more mangas. Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume is one I’ve been reading recently. It has the most important ingredient. Bishies. Including one who has to be fed regularly or he’ll fall asleep standing up. Good thing he works in a bakery ne?
SA is a poor man’s take on KareKano (second place girl relentlessly trying to take number 1), only without the heart and character.
I’m not really sure you can compare SA and KareKano.
While KK has its humorous moments, its actually quite a serious manga as you said its got a lot of heart and definitely a lot of character.
SA on the other hand is a pretty light-hearted. But there is a definitely some pluck there in the form of Hikari.
Eh sometimes you don’t want all the drama and just want something that’ll make you chuckle. And SA does that rather well.
Starting with the fact that I haven’t watched any of the 3, I am eagerly waiting for SUBS to come out, SO I might change my opinion later on. All these based on the pix and trailers.
3. Itazura na Kiss: Designs are old, that’s a huge problem for me. With previous pix, I thought the main lead would be much better with arrogant attitude, but now… come on… it fails miserably to the other male leads… more with the pic in this post..lol. The female lead is also not that good compared to other ones.
2. SA: This has much better designs, so one plus pt for me. The male lead is OK, while the female lead is also on the same line. Even though the style is Ouran-ish, it could be a good one, cause they do have different stories.
3. VK: Much hyped and I am looking forward to it. The character designs are very impressive and so is the animation. Finally, a male lead that is a bishie. I agree with you(as of now), Zero is the winner (i liked the caption). Kaname is not a loser, not even close, he is cool too. The female lead is cute and can’t say much about her clumsiness or attitude (comments reserved until i watch)
P.S: How is the Vampire Knight manga? I was thinking abt reading that…
*snort* Until you pointed it out, I hadn’t realized Kei HAD “beetle antennae”! As a fangirl, I’m okay with that. He still remains a cool, collected #1!
And while I agree that Yuuki is not on Hikari’s level (Hikari ROCKS!), she does have her moments of courage and fortitude. Goodness knows, she at least TRIES… and she is quite cute and earnest.
I’m a fan of the manga. As far as recommending it, I know there are a couple different camps out there. Some who love it (like me) and some who don’t care for it. I think it depends on whether you are inclined to like shoujo and if you are particular about how vampires are presented. If you like shoujo, I would say give a read. The art is pretty good (lots of pretty boys!) and the story and characters are pretty engaging.
@ DJ: Yeah, I got curious and dug up the recent chapters. Ok, revelations. A lot of revelations. Fortunately I’m not as invested in the story as I used to be, so I’m not feeling so frustrated as I imagine many fans would be.
@ Sang: I agree with you that S.A reminds me a bit of KareKano… but like DJ, I don’t think it’s fair to call S.A an imitation of KareKano. Personally, I find KareKano to be a serious (melo)drama of a love story and how a relationship works between two characters. For S.A, it’s a love comedy where the girl doesn’t even realize that the guy is in love with her. Like S.A is similar to Ouran in tone and atmosphere but different in story and character, S.A has some similarities to KareKano in story and characters but is vastly different in tone and atmosphere.
@ Emmi: I’m glad my review’s of some help.
As for the manga, you might get better response from those who follow the manga religiously (DJ introduced it to me, and I think Impz is a fan of the manga). I can only say that it’s a fairly typical magical shoujo with the accompanying angst and love relationships. The only thing I don’t like is the female lead’s inability to kick ass, but I’m weird that way.
The art, though, is wonderful. Very, very pretty, and the story is intricate towards the more recent chapters.
after reading for so long…
thinking for a while…
I…AGREE with you !
Hikari and Zero as the most “…”
