Yes, you can tell that I am a huge fan of Zero compared to Kaname. Still, Kaname is fine too. I like Ichijou most though!

It’s really a total pain when I have to blog two possible blockbusters in a single day. I am not complaining though. After Special A, the second series that I have been anticipating is here. Vampire Knight, derided by some as ridiculous and adored by others, has finally transited from manga to anime. As usual, with a manga adaptation with a rather strong following, it is always treated more critically than other manga. Does Vampire Knight Episode 1 fulfill its promise, or is it a time to flame on?

On a relevant note, I will be working as an editor for Orange subs fansubbing Vampire Knight. Do support us, all right? I cannot wait for the DVDs to arrive too!

Episode summary

vk0102.jpg

Yuuki remembers how she is assaulted by a vampire when she is young, only to be rescued by Kaname. Years have past, and Yuki is now a prefect/guardian of Cross Academy. Surrounded by fangirls of the day class, Yuki is tasked to keep these fangirls away from the special Night class led by Kaname during the class change. The night class, with Aido in particular, gains a lot of attention from the others. Yuuki is shoved down by the mob surrounding Aido and Kaname is concerned. That earns the wrath of the fangirls.

Eventually, Zero the other guardian, appears to chase away the fangirls and warns Kaname & co to be on their way. Yuuki reminds Zero about his responsibility as a mediator, and Zero returns the warning. As Kaname walks off, he also rots a rose, displaying his supernatural powers. At night, the night class mentions about the vampire inhibitor while Aido is annoyed at the snooty behavior of Zero where he touches Kaname’s hands. Shiki also mentions about the nice smell of Yuuki, but Kaname clearly cares about Yuuki. Ruka also uses a book to hurt Aido’s hand. The moon is finally concealed while they speak. It is the time of the vampire.

In the office, Zero complains about their role to the school chairman to find more helpers for this escorting of the Night class. He adds that Yuuki is unreliable, but Yuuki adds that someone who always skips class has no right to berate her. The school chairman says that the night class’s secret identity (being vampires) cannot be revealed since the two classes study in the same school. The chairman adds that he feels better when his “son” and “daughter” is working on this. Zero gets even more annoyed, stating that he is NOT his son. Zero asks Yuuki to complain, but she seems to believe that the two can co-exist.

The chairman then talks in a grand manner about the pacifism between vampires and humans. As Zero leaves in annoyance, the chairman does admit that there are vampires who are savage. Yuuki says that she has no memory what happened five years ago where the chairman took charge of her after Kaname brings her to the academy. Kaname is the one who started her life. Ichijou warns that the reason why the vampires are peaceful is because of Kaname, and this peace is fragile. Yuuki also tries to cool down, telling herself that Kaname is from a different world. Zero also seems to be struggling, requiring some pills.

this is a test of the caption powers

The next day, due to sentry duty, Yuuki dozes off in class and is asked to attend remedial lessons. Her friend, Sayori, seems to be completely uninterested of vampires and the night class. She also informs that Zero has already escaped remedial lessons. Yuuki finds Zero in the stable and is about to scold him. However, she earns the wrath of Lily, with Zero telling Lily that Yuuki is completely harmless. Yuuki tells Zero that it is time for sentry duty. Yuki thinks about the darkness in Zero’s heart.

At night, Yuuki dreamily gazes at Kaname, and Zero warns her not to display her affections in full bloom. They then walked to the ceiling of the school. Yuuki tries to hide her embarrassment by stating that the night class’s conduct is good, and there are no day class trespassers. Zero asks if she truly believes in peace between the two groups. She believes so, but Zero says he becomes a guardian to find the most effective way to kill these beasts in human form. Yuuki remembers the hatred in Zero’s eyes when he is brought here four years ago, and it is still the same now. She acknowledges that there are evil vampires, but believes in Kaname.

From the ceiling, Yuuki finds two trespassers at ground level and swings down using a tree. One of the girls is bleeding. She tries to move them away but Aido and Kain are already here. Aido speaks of a sweet smell, but it turns out that Yuuki hurts herself while swinging down. Aido licks the blood off Yuuki, and is about to bite her throat. The two students realize that Aido is a vampire and faint. Zero appears with a gun, reminding Aido about the no-biting rule. Aido says he already tasted blood, only for Zero to release the trigger to shoot slightly away from Aido.

Kaname warns Zero to get rid of the Bloody Rose. Kaname promises to discipline Aido and Kain, while Rika removes their memory. Kaname apologizes that Aido has scared her, but Zero drags her away. In the bathroom, Yuuki thinks about whether she can remove the darkness in Zero’s heart. Zero enters, completely ignoring the fact that she’s female. Zero adds that the smell of blood has disappeared. Yuuki wonders about the smell of his blood. Zero goes into the room, and he seems to be struggling. Zero is also a vampire. Aido is also slapped by Kaname for his careless remarks of Yuuki’s blood.

Audio

The OP is haunting, giving the right vibes for a vampire show. I also like the ED, which sets a huge ending mode, with Yuuki looking dazed and bloody. The soundtrack for this series is downright excellent and I am happy to say this is the first series that Impz has enjoyed through the sound of the ambiance. Some of the background sounds and music fits the theme of the night. It brings me to the world of the darkness, the time of the vampire.

I also like Yui Horie’s voice for Yuuki. It is exactly how I imagine Yuuki will sound like, unlike the cognitive dissonance I felt listening to Yuko Goto’s rendition of Hikari. That said, I always hold Yui Horie in very high regard, just like Kurogane. In addition, most of the guys sound all right, even though I feel that Kaname’s voice seems to bring a hint of haughtiness. Considering that he is a vampire, it is perhaps logical. For some strange reason, I feel that Ichijou’s voice seiyuu is chosen well too. It’s so queer how I am mentioning about seiyuus of guys, when I am a guy myself -_-

Animation

vk0105.jpg

Animation is well done considering that the animation company is Studio Deen. No love is lost between me and the company, with their rather bad treatment of Hatenkou Yuugi. The character design is pretty, with Yuuki looking even more impressive than in the manga. However, there is a nagging feeling that the key frames are animated by them, while they outsource the in between frames to some Korean animation company. I am not sure but it is a concern by someone in orange-subs that triggered me to think.

Vibes

vk0106.jpg

Let’s be honest here, despite my clear biased interest of Vampire knight. Vampire Knight is nothing revolutionary. It does not set out a new path of shoujo. It is simply following the path of a shoujo series, and doing it very darn well. In that case, all the characters are nothing truly new, but it has a good strong story. Despite my concern over future manga spoiler plots, the characters are likable, with differing degrees of sophistication.

I will not talk about the debate between Kaname and Zero, a very heated debate between fangirls of the manga. That is a very tricky topic, particularly since it is not time as yet. I believe that there are enough mysteries/hints in the first episode that will be good for anyone. The first thing is the true identity of Zero, and his unexplainable hatred of vampires. Who is he and why is his family killed by vampires? Who is the Headmaster Kaien Cross, and why did he set up a peace pact with Kaname? Why is Kaname caring so much about Yuuki.

So, who should be the target audience for this series? For one, if you like pretty boys, and a pseudo love triangle between Zero, Yuuki and Kaname, you should apply. If you like a strong shoujo series that does not break too many boundaries, yet constructing each of its step with some intent, you should apply. If you like vampires, it’s obvious you should apply. For those who are looking for action once again, this is not your anime. So, have I tempted you enough to watch this?

If you do, follow THAT Anime Blog for subsequent episode summaries of this vampire series that will start out light hearted before going on with darker themes.

P/S: Please do NOT post spoilers of the manga for manga readers.

Reverse Vampire’s View:

Not going to mention any spoilers. I was really anticipating the anime series for months now (Yes, MONTHS!) and for my P.O.V, it was pretty cool for my standards but there are some minor changes on how the story goes (If you want to point the differences, read the 1st chapter of VK and compare.) The only thing I’m disappointed at is the part when Kaname came in after Aido got a taste of Yuki’s blood; his head is waayy too small. But I find nothing wrong with the rest of the episode. The ED gave me the creeps when Yuki was dancing like a puppet to be precise, or a doll, to sound nicer. But anyways, I will rate this episode: 8/10.

Man,i am excited but i hope that the animation quality will stay the same throughout the series, considering how crappy Amatsuki looks

polar bear added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 12:59 am

I’ve read some of the manga and, without spoiling anything, Zero is just a little too emo for me to bare the amount of page time he has. I’m a fan of the dark brooding, introverted hero, but you’ve got to give it a rest occasionally and be cool to the people around you at some point if you’re gonna be a likeable male lead, no matter what problems you have.

I feel the manga kind of hints at greatness by introducing cool concepts, but then just pisses around and fails to flesh out said concepts or explore them to their true potential. Still, I’ve only read the first 4 volumes, maybe it improves.

Well Impz is a raging trap so ya

Leviathan added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 6:10 am

@Leviathan: QUOTING ME OUT OF CONTEXT. ban ban ban ban!!! ^_^;;;. Anyway, I am no raging trap. I am a normal guy who enjoys shoujo series. Why do everyone call me a trap? I wish I look pretty though ^_^

Impz added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 6:25 am

This is a bit ridiculous, what with him only having said one sentence, but so far, I seem to be most fond of Shiki’s seiyuu. Sadly, I cannot say the same for Yui Horie’s interpretation of Yuki. It’s likely that I will get used to it at some point, yet at the moment she sounds irritating. The gloomy background music is not quite helping either. The way I see it, certain (and most) characters already have complicated and dark personalities which gives off the necessary vibes. No need to make the show practically radiate emo.

Well, even if the first episode wasn’t exactly what I expected, I still am excited to see how this is going to turn out. That, and Zero threatening Kaname. Hmmm.

Headmaster! <3

No offence Impz^^

From how the season has gone so far, I’d so be blogging this if you weren’t. Looking forward to seeing where this goes (as long as the animation quality stays up).

rieuzedx added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 8:50 am

@Myu: Heh, I think that we do have a completely different interpretation of the series. I do realize that the gloomy background music is making it dark, but yet it also fits the ambiance of the series. I do see your point though, and even Kurogane complained on irc that the whole show feels somewhat emo.

Yes, that scene appeared in the manga too about Zero threatening Kaname. Wait, it didn’t really happen. It is more explicit in the anime, I guess though there are some added scenes.

@Leviahan: none taken at all ^_^. It’s all for fun.

@Rieu: touch it and die. Like die.

Thank you so very much for the warning to not post manga spoilers in the comments. I hope your visitors will heed your warning because I DO NOT WANT to learn manga spoilers via comments. If spoilers start appearing, I’ll have to abandon your VK posts.

Now that my litte rant is over. Nice job summarizing the episode. Even though VK isn’t an action show, there was enough action that I could follow the episode with my extremely limited, near non-existent Japanese. Still, it’s nice to have you fill in the small details for me until the subs come out.

LKK added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 10:53 am

Good post! I saw the episode but didn’t understand a thing; just from what I remembered by reading chapter 1 of the manga. although it wasn’t exactly what I wanted to see, it wasn’t bad either! I’m looking forward to seeing more episodes. :)

and I’ll be following your VK summary posts. ^__^

Impz+shoujo= ?? ^^ I’m with you on this one, yes to pretty things plus vampires… Yuuki’s neck :p mmmsogood

Another show that I was looking forward to. I’m a fan of the manga so it will be interesting to see it animated, although I’m terribly critical of the animated versions of my favourite manga - can’t seem to stop myself nitpicking! The one thing thats bugging me so far is that it looks like Zero is wearing lipgloss in a lot of the pics I’ve seen thus far……which is worrying!

Caraniel added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 2:32 pm

Have to judge Amatsuki based on the first episode when you are watching 16 other spring animes

polar bear added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 5:00 pm

IM BACK!!! 8D /me sees Impz run away!

You know whats so damn funny about this post…the fact that it seems you and I can never agree on anything. XD You like Zero, I like Kaname XD But I do like Ichijou too so Ill give you credit on that!

Considering you hate manga spoilers Im glad for the warning as well (remembers GH blog) I know the spoilers but I plan on keeping my mouth shut as always.

Zero > Kanami period.

jelly added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 6:42 pm

YAY its finally here! *does the happy dance*

I was nicely surprised by the animation so that’s a major plus already.

I have to agree the Opening and Ending themes, hell the music in general is a good match for the show.

I’d say more but I’m too busy drooling over Zero and Kaname. Yes in that order, I just seem to have a thing for the silver haired ones ^-^

D.J added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 7:35 pm

@LKK: Yep. In fact, I already read VK manga to the most recent release, but I am quite concerned if there are going to be manga spoilers. As Reverse Vampire has made some manga posts on VK, I thought it’s better for me to at least mention it.

Ya, It’s not that hard to follow if you are watching the raw for this. Still, I am glad. ^^

@Denise: hehehe, it follows mostly the story of chapter 1, but it is fast forwarded a bit more than usual. Well, I am glad you will. Do share whatever you have up to the manga content for this episode. ^^

@Ryan A: Happiness. I like shoujo. Yuuki’s neck is delicious too. I nearly typed DFC.

@Caraniel: Ya, it’s really problematic for many manga readers because the two mediums are bound to have their differences. I really cannot complain much because it is a good transformation from manga to anime. I actually enjoy Zero’s character design and it did not feel that obvious.

@Polar Bear: This is VK though O_O. huh?

@Yami: Of course. If not, you will not be Yami, and I will not be Impz. The whole world will explode. I mean, what’s so good about Kaname. He is still ok until a certain part of the manga…That was …bah.

@Jelly: Word

@D.J: Hahahaha, I was very happy with Yuuki cos she looks so much cuter. I want Ruka too quite a bit. Her character design is nice. I am not surprised about the animation because Studio Deen seems to be focusing most of its effort on VK compared to its other four series.

Impz added these pithy words on Apr 08 08 at 11:10 pm

oh I also think the Opening theme is great for the show! it really “suits” it. I’m in love with the song.

denise added these pithy words on Apr 09 08 at 3:01 am

Just got a hold of watching the chinese subs, and I agree! The part where Aido bit Yuki and Kaname came out, he looked way off. I could do without the boring opening, but the ending sounds pretty much awesome.

:D
And Ruka looks better here, and thankfully Yuki here is much better than in what they showed in their poster - Yuki’s head was wayyy big. D:

summermusings added these pithy words on Apr 09 08 at 3:08 am

Impz, she does look really cute! They managed to make Zero look yummier too. And Kaname, well he’s always pretty.

I’ll admit though that I’m biased towards Zero. Of course that probably isn’t surprising given my love of Abel from Trinity Blood ^-^ I know your wifey will agree with me on that one ^-^

I promise not to leak spoilers.

*Returns to drooling*

As a VK manga fangirl, I have to say I’m enjoying the adaptation a great deal. The voice cast is really good and the look is a fairly good translation of the manga. It’s not the world’s greatest animation, but it’s still pretty darn good. I was kinda worried how Zero and Yuuki would look based on the preview stills, but they both look great. And Kaname looks sooo pretty… =)

Thanks muchly for blogging this! I’m looking forward to the fansubs. =) Watching on RAWS has been okay considering I have the first 3 translated manga volumes.

I guess my only worry is how they’re going to cram 38 plus chapters into a season, especially given the first episode was literally the first chapter of the manga. (Sorry if that’s a spoiler of some kind!) I guess we’ll see though… Any word on how long the season is supposed to be?

JC added these pithy words on Apr 10 08 at 11:44 am

“…while Rika removes their memory.” i jst wanna clarify, it was Seiren (Kaname’s bodyguard) who erased the memory of the 2 day class students.

and thanx Impz! i miss ur summaries since season 2 of saimono has ended.

(sigh) Kaname’s soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo handsome!!! i wonder why some girls hate him…

hot vampires… makes me want to offer my neck. (ooops. my boyfriend’s gunna kill me if he reads this)

Finally Vampire Knight… I have heard a lot and probably would have started reading the manga soon, but now that anime is out, I will postpone it(seeing it was not happening any soon either). I was kinda looking forward to it. Character designs really impresses me and animation is good too.

Fangirls… ummm… right now I have no clue who is who, so yeah, I will just pass on that and keep shut until I watch the epi when subs are out.

emmi added these pithy words on Apr 11 08 at 5:25 pm

I really enjoyed the first episode, but at the same time three things worried me:
1)The animation quality: The animation quality for the episode wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. First episodes generally seem to have some of the best animation in a series and it really doesn’t have far to fall from being good acceptable to the realm of “Who was that supposed to be again?”
2)The tone of the show: The integration of the funny parts into the more serious parts was a little jarring. I hope they reach a good balance without those scenes seeming out of place. The random silliness just seemed to really go against the tone they were trying to set.
3)Deviations from the manga: What they did in the first episode didn’t bother me. It didn’t really screw up anything plot wise and it was more interesting to watch then a straight adaptation of the manga would have been. But, it shows that they are willing to make changes, and I don’t really trust them not to screw it up. I don’t mind changes in my adaptations, but it seems like they plan on sticking pretty closely to the manga plot, so they could create some major plot holes if they aren’t careful.
…. Sorry for writing so much.
