Well that was certainly different from the de-culture edition, and it wasn’t just the OP and ED. I guess they wanted to ratchet up the AltoxSheryl aspect rather than letting Ranka Nyan Nyan dance her way to victory. In any case she sure was professional and they cut out that embarrassing engrish part. I can’t say much for the cutting the dog fights out for an altered concert and watching Mikhail try and pick up chicks, but hey cuts had to come from somewhere I guess and least they didn’t just phone it in and re-broadcast the de-culture edition.

So yeah Sheryl’s bitch-fu went up fifty some notches and it made sense in the grand scheme of things seeing as how she’s the one who gave them the boot. I nearly fell out of my chair when that nyan nyan commercial hit in the [AiA I-Z] sub. Now I feel like Chinese for lunch today…

At any rate as I said before in my previous post the VF-25 is one sexy fighter. While most of it is derived from the F-14 Tomcat, it looks like the nose section has more in common with an F/A-18 Super Hornet. The Ejection system is about as sweet as it gets. I wish they had incorporated the firs scene with Alto and his group since it explained why he was able to pilot the VF-25 rather than just jump in and go. Well at least they bothered to mention that he was part of the flight school. As far as aesthetic completion goes I think that it’s all here with the familiar cable cars, and military weapons. Even the insect-like enemy looked consistent even if they strike me as something out of a Tyranid Fleet. There a bunch of other little details such as the initial vic formations that the humans used when they entered combat. In fact the three fighter formations that the grunts used were very similar to the early formations of the RAF during WWII. Not only does it show that grunts are all round green, but it also shows how for most of their stint the Colony Fleet was at a peace time footing as flying so close impairs situational awareness. That VF-171 should not have been out there alone and given that it was I suspect that the grunts merely expected a routine day and had gotten lax as most military doctrine calls for the AWACS to have a fighter escort given how important they are for early detection, fighter coordination, and redundancy. Though the VF-17 vics do look pretty…

Fleet deployment also seemed more of peacetime defense plan with the lack of cap ships on outer picket duty. Since there were set up way too close to the vulnerable colony ships to do much good in terms of being able to maneuver. Well they are off to a bad start but in time hopefully they will take away some tactical lessons and hopefully some strategic ones as well.

It pretty much followed the de-culture edition though as I mentioned before Sheryl and Alto got better acquainted this time though I still can’t believe how Sheryl just turned off her disgust in one go and started stroking Alto as he carried her. Even if Sheryl is a nasty woman, I must say I applaud her professionalism. I guess they cut out he dogfights to shed more light on Alto and his groups, no doubt once the initial attack is over that Mikhail, Alto, and Luka will be squadron mates. Already we can see that Alto his not going to be the team player from the get go, as he disobey Mikhail with dire consequences, good thing no one was hurt. Mikhail already has shown his talents for improvisation and masterfully ran the rest of the program ad-hoc so that the audience wouldn’t know how much they, and by that I mean Alto, screwed up.

So the enemy still remains a mystery are the purely biological or are they merely biomechanical with pilots inside? Their presence was not a complete surprise so it stands to reason that the enemy has been encountered before. I also wonder if the M Galaxy Fleet is going to have some part given their close proximity at this point. Perhaps the coming of Sheryl to the Frontier Fleet was no accident or the enemy was trying to instigate a preemptive strike ala Operation Focus. They were smart enough to attack the lone picket rendering the humans blind and rapidly made a b-line to where Sheryl was. The fact that Sheryl has a military escort means that she is of great importance at some level be it by birth or as a new weapon.

We need a name for this soon…I would like to propose Flanker.

Macross triangle had to be set up and there wasn’t much interaction between Alto and Sheryl in the deculture editions so I can see why they decided to do what they did. I am sure that they will make up for cutting out the dogfights in later eps, so it’s not too much of a loss. I liked the OP but then again I am tone deaf. Next ep is going to be an urban rumble, and man does it look sweet.
