Episode summary

saimono33-1.jpg

All the guards at the gate are completely drunk as Shuuei secures a safe passage through to Ran province with the help of Shuurei. Seiga arrives shortly after Shuuei leaves, and she says that she does not know anything about Shuuei’s escape. Seiga says it’s ok if she acts ignorance as a warrant is sent out to all gates leading to Ran clan. However, Seiga is impressed how Shuurei is able to release Shuuei, which is why Kouki considers her an equal to him. Seiga eventually taunts her, and tells her to catch up with him in his ability. She says she is not interested to catch up with her.

Ryuuki informed everyone that he is going to the Ran clan, but Riou questions the validity of his trip. Riou asks whether the trip is carried out as an emperor or as Shi Ryuuki. Riou says if the emperor is confused, his officers are also confused. However, Riou agrees that it is good for Ryuuki to think about things. The wedding officer then questions Ryuuki about Jyuusan Hime and his marriage, but Ryuuki decides quickly to bring Jyuusan Hime as it is a way to “improve their communication”. The other three clearly realizes that Ryuuki is escaping the issue. The wedding officer assumes that it is a honeymoon, and warns him not to go to the “Jiuzaigo” as it is inauspicious. Ouki also asks about the security of Ryuuki, but Shou Taishi proposes to allow “Black Wolf” to protect Ryuuki.

Koku daishogun is looking for Sun Sousho, and kicks the locked door open to find Sun lying down reading a book. Sun knows that Koku is coming due to Shuuei, and he says he will arrange for the appropriate personnel to take over duties. As Koku continues to stare at him, Sun asks what he is doing. Koku says he is transferring his feeling telepathically through his eyes. Sun says he cannot see anything from Koku’s nondescript face. Shuurei and Suou Shin are trying to eavesdrop, but is caught by Sun. Shuurei points out that the “missing” Sun is here, but Sun denies he is Sun. When Shuurei tries to challenge him, he throws a sweet into Shuurei’s mouth before Koku carries her off, warning her to forget about today. When Shuurei asks about Sun, Koku says that Sun is a remarkable man.

Kouki questions Shuurei over the visit to Sun, and tells her that if she talks about Sun lying about his “missing”, he will sack her from her job. Kouki tells her that the case is closed for her, and says that he does not work to save “pride”. Shuurei says that Kouki will be cool if he tries to save face…maybe. Shuurei says she is giving up on the case, but wants to go to Ran clan. However, the previous governor of Ran clan is Sun, and it’s clear Shuurei will investigate. Shuurei pleas Kouki, and he finally relents and allows Shuurei to investigate.

Shuurei talks to Suou Shin, and he agrees to join with Shuurei. Suou Shin’s mother returns to his father lately, and Suou Shin can trust the two to get along. Suou Shin asks about whether Seiran will be going with them, but Shuurei says it’s better for Seiran to stay. Seiran finds Ensei “studying”, and commands him to protect Shuurei. Ensei asks why Seiran is not going along, and Seiran tells Ensei that he has his role at the capital (to protect Yuushun). Ensei asks how he is going to study, but Seiran commands him to go and leaves.

Shouka is thinking about his trip to the Ran clan, and wonders how to tell Seiran and Shuurei. Ryuuki comes to Shouka, asking Shouka to join him. Shouka thought his secret is out, but Ryuuki says that he wishes for Shouka’s accompany in the trip, and a “mysterious guard” will protect them. Shouka, in his mind, knows that the mysterious guard is him. Ryuuki promises to protect Shouka if it requires, and Shouka says he will be more useful. Shouka thinks about the current situation, since he is no longer shadowing but openly following. Anjun comes to talk to Shuurei, and Shuurei is looking at the nobles in Ran clan. Shuurei tries to ask Anjun for help by giving an innocent wide smile, but Anjun refuses.

Anjun also reveals that Kouki is the only survivor in his clan, and there is a history of the previous king exterminating entire noble clans. Ouki, the boss of Anjun, is the one who takes charge of these remnant clan members. When asked how Ouki is like, Anjun simply says that Ouki has the aura of a true noble. Sun and Ouki are chatting about life, and Sun says his life philosophy is that he lives for the present. Sun asks about Ouki’s wish, and Sun says his wish is that Ouki will be king. Ouki says that he wants to sit in the throne, and Sun says he will do whatever he can to support him. Back to Anjun, he warns Shuurei not to be attracted by random people. Suou Shin is surprised that Shuurei can be tempted, and says that it might be good for Shuurei to have someone to care and share her thoughts. Shuurei says she is going to find Jyuusan Hime.

Jyuusan Hime rushes in to Ryuuki after hearing that Ryuuki is bringing her for a honeymoon trip. She hears it from Shou Taishi, and Ryuuki knows he is spreading stupid information again. Jyuusan Hime asks if Ryuuki has any plans to get Shuuei back, and Ryuuki says he will convince Shuuei with love. Jyuusan Hime tells him not to push too hard, and starts thinking that it might be worse if there is only agony when two stays together. Shuurei realizes that Jyuusan Hime is with Ryuuki and Jyuusan Hime says that the best thing is to care for the person you love. Jyuusan Hime starts to blush for saying such embarrassing things, and asks if Ryuuki is lonely. Jyuusan Hime says she will keep Ryuuki company. In front of the promised tree, Shuurei realizes that Ryuuki might not be lonely anymore in the night, and she says that it’s good even though her tone betrays her.

Thoughts

saimono33-3.jpg

One of the key events seem to be revealing Ouki as the mastermind behind all the events in the recent few episodes, from the salt and picture incident, to the assassination of Jyuusan Hime. He admits in his chat with Sun that he wishes to sit in the throne and it is very highly likely that only a person who has a vendetta against the king (he picks up all the clan members whose clan is exterminated by the previous king). I am very surprised how they are hinting quite blatantly that Ouki might be the one behind this. They never did state explicitly about that, but it’s simply a conversation between friends.

This episode definitely returns more to the comedy side of things after some rather serious episodes lately (I am still haunted by the scary Shouka the last episode). One of the key jokes in my opinion is how the “Black Wolf aka Shouka” is asked to protect Ryuuki. Shouka is definitely surprised when Ryuuki looks for him to accompany and goes proudly that “there will be a mysterious person protecting them”. I thought that it is classic when Shouka says in his mind “it is me!”.

Seiran is also commanding in his treatment of Ensei. Sometimes, I wonder if Ensei and Seiran are in a master-slave relationship, only that the slave is somewhat nonchalant over the commands of his master. Despite the fact that Ensei really needs to study, Seiran totally does not care anything about his arguments and tell him to follow Shuurei. In a way, it can also show that Seiran fully trusts Ensei’s ability to protect Shuurei, and I think he is the only person Seiran will trust when it comes to Shuurei. It’s a clear vindication of the trust between the two, despite the sometimes horrid friendship conversations.

Shuurei also literally batters Kouki into submission with her continual insistence to deal with the investigation. I honestly laugh big time when the inflappable Kouki can be coerced of sorts to a decision, considering how harsh and mean he is generally. It definitely shows quite a bit about Shuurei when she is so persistent at getting things her way. The last key event must be the ending. It is apparent that despite the nice words that are said about Shuurei, it is probably the first time that she feels lonely and alone. The way she mentions about Ryuuki’s loneliness being alleviated by Jyuusan Hime seems to indicate a feel of wistfulness, as though she is somewhat lonely in her selfish pursuit of power.

In a brief discussion with my girlfriend on this situation, she hits it at the right spot.

Thirteen Sugars : jyuusan hime took her place?
Thirteen Sugars : OH OH right right
Thirteen Sugars : I don’t think it’s left out
Impz : now, jyuusan hime assumingly took her place (cos she heard that jyuusan hime promised to accompany ryuuki)
Thirteen Sugars : but more jealousy over the fact that Ryuuki is with someone shuurei wanted him to be with
Thirteen Sugars : and realizing that it wasn’t really a happy wish on shuurei’s behalf
Impz : ya, it’s not happy wishes
Thirteen Sugars : I do have to say I’m quite pleased
Thirteen Sugars : cause then now shuurei gets a taste of being alone and lonely at least in the terms of love
Impz : hhahaha, u are so mean
Thirteen Sugars : ’cause she always sounded so certain that she doesn’t need such things in her life -_-
Thirteen Sugars : that part of her always seemed selfish to me, not wanting to share something someone is literally begging for

What do you think?

ahhh impz.. thank you again… yer welp this is getting interesting..wow shuurei looked like dumpling..hehe like dumped anyway.. shes so dense and insensitive.. i hope the she will regret her insensitivity somehow. I hope for a good outcome on this..

    Thanks very much impz..

  2. Impz January 27th, 2008 6:31 am

@Etineski: She does? This is the first time that I saw Shuurei say words that should be comforting and nice, but there is this strong tinge of sadness that betrays her very words. It is finally clear that she finally knows a little bit of how Ryuuki is feeling. Unlike her, Ryuuki’s role as an emperor means that he will become increasingly isolated.

In the preview, Shuurei says this.

“I am really happy that Ryuuki is not lonely anymore. However, what is this confusing and puzzling feeling in my heart. Maybe, if I wallop Seiga, I will feel better!”

    Clearly, she is strongly affected.

I have no idea, but everytime I read more and more of the summaries, I love Anju more and more. I mean, how Sakujun is he sounding eh?

    :D

But it was quite a funny episode, with the Shuurei and Kouki thing. Seriously, only she can make him frustrated. Anju would probably laugh his head off if he saw that.

  4. SEAMaiden January 27th, 2008 9:07 am

Ooh, FINALLY!! SERVES HER RIGHT for being too stubbornly distant from her Ryuuki!! Haha *laughing evilly away*

But come to think of it though, you can’t really blame her if she tried to push Ryuuki to Jyuusan-hime rather than having him to herself. Both Ryuuki’s + her own life is dangerously high on the stakes. If she confesses love for Ryuuki now, Ryuuki may start doing stupid things that would jeapardise their lives and Saiunkoku’s stability after that. Okay, even if Ryuuki won’t be that stupid to do such things, there’s noblemen out there who would love them dead out of grudge + greed.

SeiranXEnsei…thank God that they came back on screen. I miss them so much :P I don’t think the master-slave relationship fits to describe them. Ensei is just too strong for a guy to be driven like a meek slave (except perhaps by Tei Yuushun). Also, Ensei often levels himself at Seiran whenever the latter gets too hot-tempered over something. At best to describe their relationship, he doesn’t look up to Seiran as a master or prince but as a friend.

  5. Impz January 27th, 2008 9:16 am

@Chelsea: Well,I think if Anju ever has the chance to see how Shuurei literally owns Kouki with her sheer persistence, he will make sure that Kouki will not ever be able to hide his head away from Anju’s taunting. I can sense that Anju enjoys the evil taunting on Kouki, since Kouki seems somewhat arrogant at times. It’s nice to see him conceal defeat (which is quite a defeat for Kouki).

@SeaMaiden: hahaha, why are you just as mean as my girlfriend? Well, I think that she can only swallow her own sadness that the two have been distant since she is way too focused on her job and thinks that she does not need love. In that case, Ryuuki is also very lonely due to his role as an emperor. Jyuusan Hime is perhaps in a very good position as a listener (not really lover since they have their own true love) but who knows how it will develop since Shuurei really cannot do anything at all.

To be honest, even if Shuurei confesses, I am sure that Ryuuki is way too smart and responsible with his emperor role. Despite his puppish pleas and somewhat petulant rants at times, it is clear that he is trying his very best to be a great emperor. So, I cannot see that happening, but I am sure he might be affected adversely. However, the chance of it happening is 0 since Shuurei does not know love.

Oh, when I mean slave, i mean a slave that does not listen that much to his master unless there is a need to. Well, in that case, it’s no longer a master x slave, more like a master x I-cannot-care-less guy. Well, that doesn’t sound right at all, but I do enjoy the character dynamics between Seiran X Ensei.

Lol Impz… I’d have to agree with both your girlfriend and Seamaiden. As I wrote in my own character anaylsis of Shuurei elsewhere… “Personally, I think she’s going to end up very lonely if she continues to push intimacy out of her life the way she is in exchange for her career. Work is important yes, but so is developing relationships with those around you. While this doesn’t happen to everyone, I wouldn’t be surprised if Shuurei ended up as a career woman who looks back in 50 years and realizes just how much she missed out on during her lifetime.”. While I agree confessing love at this instant in the series may not be the smartest move, I hope we see more emotional development in Shuurei as the story progresses because, let’s face it… the girl needs some lessons in intimacy and interdependence.

Impz, I think it is a little harsh to say that Shurrie is pursueing her selfish path to power. She is only 18 years old and should be allowed to follow her dream. I don’t think what she is doing is selfish at all. It isn’t like she is power hungry. She wants to make a difference, is good at what she does, and is still VERY YOUNG. If she was to marry Ryuukie now, she would live a very unsatisfying life. Even Ryuuen, why she was a consort, remarked that “this life doesn’t suit you.” and later remarked to Ryuukie “That a bird like her shouldn’t be caged.” That is exactly what would happen. As his wife she would loose her freedom and ability to get out there and make a difference, because Ryuukie has to become her world at that point (because that is the role of a consort).

Shurrie won’t end up lonely because Serian will always be with her. Their love will be like Yuushun and his wife. She will take her dream, become a great politician, and 10 years later, marry Serian who has been waiting and supporting her all along. :) Or at least I can hope. This way she will have it all.

And I love Serian and Ensie together. I always get a good laugh. Those two together are by far my favorite pair to watch. Ensie is so patient with Serian.

Anyway, thanks for the update and pictures!

Hee hee hee. Kouki kawaii yo, Kouki!

Seriously though, Kouki’s “oh I give up face” = priceless. Now see why I’m such a Kouki fangirl?

Also, you should know, Sun/Son (however you spell it), is the head of the Military Department, putting him on equal rank with Reishin and Kijin. Part of the point of that scene is to show how Ryuuki will also have to obtain the loyalties of Koku and Haku Daishogun.

  9. heather January 27th, 2008 2:23 pm

L-Chan, thanks for a bit of that insight. I missed that one. :) Man Ryuukie has a lot of work cut out for him. Good thing he has Jyuusan Hima to help him through. No doubt she understands political alignment better than any other female character around Ryuukie at the moment. That Ran clan is a clever bunch!

  10. ClariCANDYXD January 27th, 2008 2:50 pm

Shuurie is still young and loves to help out soo much in Saiunkoku to make it a better country becuase of what she experienced as a child. I just hope nothing will truly develope between Hime-san and Ryuuki-chan^^…I guess maybe finally Shuurie is feeling the consequences of not trying to admit a love she has deep inside her..* Hopefully nothing will eat her up inside..

  11. Ryurei_love January 27th, 2008 5:54 pm

i’m confused during this part of the summary

“Jyuusan Hime asks if Ryuuki has any plans to get Shuuei back, and Ryuuki says he will convince Shuuei with love.”

are they talking about Shuuei or Shuurei.. because I don’t understand how Ryuuki will bring back Shuuei with love… sounds kina yaoi to me? Was this just mis-spell? Please reply because I am so confused, and it’s really bothering me:S

  12. L-chan January 27th, 2008 6:58 pm

@Ryurei: No, it wasn’t misspelled. Ryuuki was planning to bring Shuuei back with love. But that’s part of the joke. It’s kind of a running gag in the novels of how even the characters realize that some of their situations seem kinda yaoi-ish.

  13. delphyne January 27th, 2008 7:16 pm

Bwahahahaha (evil laugh) Serves you right, Shuurei!!!! Bwahahahaha! if you ask me..she deserves to be alone and lonely!!!

Why does this make me so happy? XD

    Yey for team RyuukixJyusan-hime!!!!!!

  14. KaeBoo January 27th, 2008 8:36 pm

    the fun now starts. muwahahahha!

This is the start of the realization of what it takes to be an official. We’d see people growing up.

which still gets me to the question…

Isn’t what Seiga and Shuurei showing the early stages of flirting? what if, just what if shuurei realizes that besides being a worthy adversary, he is a worthy partner? *evil laughter*

I really hope they release the next novel soon, the anime would seem to stop where vol 12 also stopped. There’s this nagging feeling that we are going to wait a loooooooong time for the next installment of the story.

    anyway… let’s just hope not.

    thanks for the summary, impzie!

  15. delphyne January 27th, 2008 9:25 pm

@KaeBoo: Do you think they’ll actually continue the anime when a new novel volume comes out? I would think they’d make up a ‘fictional’ ending for episode #38 and #39…like they always do. And it’s so frustrating because just when Saiunkoku is getting really good…and just when Ryuuki is about to finally step up and be “emperor”…..@_@

  16. Ryurei_love January 27th, 2008 9:26 pm

    thanks for the confirmation L-chan!

  17. Impz January 27th, 2008 10:30 pm

@ryume: Heh. I think that she is likely to understand that romance, emotions and work can be balanced somehow in order to have a life that is most fulfilling. However, I do take some sympathy in her previous experiences and her own agenda at romance and love due to these issues. Nevertheless, I am very sure that she will have a few more lessons in intimacy and learn to rely on people more in terms of emotion. She is trying way too hard to be independent and survive on her own. That’s good too actually, but she has gone beyond the stage where it is helpful for her.

@Heather: harsh is my middle name ^_^. Ok ok, jokes aside, I think that she is probably very idealistic considering her young age and hence works in this way. However, I always remember that at 18, I am always very interested in the other sex. Shuurei shows a complete ignorance of it, as though she does not even know love exists and runs away from it.

I do not actually think that she will lose her freedom, but she just has to find a proper husband that knows how to settle it for her. Ensei is perhaps extremely patient when it comes to Seiran, and they must be very close since Seiran always shows his horrible side to Ensei like all the time.

@L-chan: HEH! You are funny! Thanks for the clarification on their roles because I always go like O_O when they talk about roles, their posts and official rank.

@Clari: Honestly, I doubt anything will truly happen. they are likely to become good friends but both their hearts are with someone else right now, and I think they will be great bosom friends to cheer each other on. And I guess in a rather mean way, serve Shuurei right :P

@Delphyne: Lol, the horns on your head are already appearing. Are you plotting something evil again or conducting a ritual of love voodoo on Ryuuki and Jyuusan Hime?

@Kaeboo: Really? It feels more like Seiga looks at Shuurei like a toy, even more so than Sakajun at the early stages.

  18. delphyne January 28th, 2008 1:28 am

@Impz: All of the above XD Honestly…I want Ryuuki with Jyusan. I think they are good for each other and can eventually learn to love each other ‘romantically.’ Shurrei can get together with Seiran or Sakujun or Anju for all I care….god knows she can choose from all the guys there….JUST NOT RYUUKI!!!! Live i’ve said a million gazillion times…she doesn’t deserve hime! and again…Serves her right!!!!

hi~nice blog with a nice post

    @Impz:

    Re: Cruelty for Shuurei
Hehe, I can’t help but be cruel! She’s terribly slow, dude! I feel like bashing her up for not understanding ‘balance work with love’ term!!…But Heather has made a very good point. I conceded that Shuurei didn’t marry Ryuuki right off from Season 1. She’s young for her age with so much strength to give. That strength is much bigger than loving Ryuuki alone. I’m glad she’s made of sterner stuff than your usual meek, unvisionary concubine in those ancient Imperial days.

RE: Jiuzaigo (for your history info)
Personally, I’m saving up $ to visit that place one day. Jiuzaigo truly exist today, in southwest of mainland China. It’s a huge valley that is so outstandingly beautiful that it’s considered by the local people sacred, a fairyland. Taboo about that place? Well, Jiuzaigo has some Chinese mythical tales going about it, among them about a Goddess who accidentally dropped a magic mirror from her heavenly home + it’s mirror shards formed the 114 lakes today of the whole Jiuzaiguo valley. No wonder Yukino Sai would want to base the mystical Hyou clan to this land due to it’s sacred beauty. Since Ran clan is also nearby, no wonder the Ran province are very water-base culturally.

    @all anti-Ryuuki@Shuurei pairing fans
    GIMME A BREAK!!!

  21. rev January 28th, 2008 9:55 am

@Impz (and your discussion with ur gf)

She’s not selfish, but just abysmally (lol) dense; well.. for a shoujo character (reminds me of Hikari in Special A)

  22. Ryume January 28th, 2008 10:46 am

    @Impz -

Yup yup, I totally agree. As I thought about it more, honestly (while I do like Shuurei a lot), I feel like in terms of growth she is one of the more static characters in the story at this point. Her political and business sides are incredible. For a teenager, I think she’s quite brilliant and mature when it comes to her duties. I guess my “gripe” is that she’s always been that way since the start, unlike Ryuuki for example, who before our eyes is developing into an incredible emperor. Maybe I’m one of the few that feels this way, but that’s probably my largest frustration with her character. Calling her dense is pretty accurate xD.

And, while I am a silly fangirl when it comes to Ryuuki (there, I admitted it!), at this point I think connections with anyone to teach her these lessons will do fine in helping her become more well-rounded as a person. (Of course I keep my fingers crossed that she will marry Ryuuki and they’ll change the face of the royal family/court by allowing husband and wife to both take on political duties… pretty far-fetched given the reality of the culture, I know xD.)

  23. Kourika January 28th, 2008 2:16 pm

I have to agree with the people who think that Shuurei will not end up with Ryuuki without some major changes in her life goals. If she wants to be a powerful government official, she CANNOT marry the emperor because her movements will be strictly curtailed. Any move Ryuuki would make to put Shuurei’s ideas into law would be perceived as him being weak towards his wife’s desires.

I am also one of the few fans who don’t think that Shuurei can marry Seiran without the nobles raising questions about who he really is. She is the oldest daughter of the Kou clan, so if Shouka allows a marriage between Shuurei and Seiran, a mere family retainer, people will question why.

That said…this is fundamentally a shoujo story, and Shuurei will probably end up becoming a totally awesome government officialy and marry Ryuuki in the end!

Oh, and the denseness about love appears to be a family trait…Shouka says something about Shuurei’s mother being the same about his feelings at the beginning of Series 2.

  24. D.J January 28th, 2008 5:57 pm

Ryuuki has been pretty consistent in his affection for Shuurei, so maybe she’s gotten used to it and has taken it for granted a little bit.

So yeah I think its kind of good she’s getting a bit of a wake up call.

I do want them to end up together, although I’m not sure if that’s really going to happen *cries*. But it really is only going to happen if she wakes up and realizes how she feels about him.

She grew a little bit in regards to emotional growth when she spent time with Sakujun, but she still has a ways to come. Its probably the one aspect where she is a bit of a coward.

  25. heather January 28th, 2008 7:15 pm

Ryume – I think you made an interresting point with the whole Serian/Shuurie marriage thing. But, Let me throw this your way. I believe that it has always been Shoka’s hope (and the KO clan’s) that Serian and Shurrie will marry. Think about it. He never adopted Serian like Renshin adpoted Kouyuu. Shoka made Serain the family retainer, because Shurrie couldn’t marry her bother but she could marry a family retainer. If you watch, Shoka drops subtle hints to Serian every now again. Letting him know that it is okay to pursue his own life, and to give thought to it because Shuurrie hadn’t been placed. Then there was the really not subtle comment about how Shurrie or him (Serian) could stay alone. But, I guess it is only natural for Shoka to want that union because of how he loves them both.

2nd Shoka’s little brother only decided to elect Kouyuu AFTER Serian pursued a military character. He told Kouyuu that Serian was no longer any help to her (meaning the expectation had been there). While she could further herself by using Kouyuu (because of the path she has chosen).

3rd, If Serian was to advance himself as a high ranking general, then there would be no one to question the union between the two because of his high ranking social status. (The King has even given Serian a treasured sword already)

And Lastly, if Shuurie and Serian were to marry, neither would have to give up there positions because there is not rule against officers and politicions. :)

    I know, I know… I will always fight for the Shuurie/Serian pairing!

  26. heather January 28th, 2008 7:32 pm

Now, on this issue of Shuurie being dense. I think that is going a little far. I mean she DOES react to love an romance (after all Sakujun won her over and probably would have gotten her, had he did things a little differently).

I think everyone has a problem because she doesn’t react to Ryuukie. Has it ever crossed anyones mind that maybe she really isn’t interrest in him? If she reacts to Sakujun, or Santa’s words of affection, something in her is there. Personally, I just think she has a hard time being interrest in anyone because of Serian. He sets the bar in her mind. Serian is handsome, smart, reliable, mature, strong, etc… these are things she says often. She has had a wonderful, goodlooking, non-related man bring her flowers all the time, lay next to her, hold her, comfort her, show genuin interrest in her dreams and concerns, take care of her and her father…a man that she knows would give her the world if he could. A man that when she left and thought she might die, couldn’t bear the thought of anything happening to him, but still cried and called out HIS NAME as she wept to her father.

No, I think under any circumstances, if any woman was rised with such a man around her, she might find it hard to romantically love anyone just because of the standard already set. You know she compares all men to him.

I mean the only other man that she throws herself on, or allows to comfort her, is Serian friend Ensie. If you go back and watch, you will see that once she decided that Ensie was Serian good and trusted friend (I laugh to think of it), Ensie became family to her just because of that. Surely, if Serian thinks highly of him then he must be an awsome person and can be trusted.

Bottom line, cut Shuurie some slack. She knows what love is because she can love others. The romantic love will come when the time calls for it. I just don’t think she is honestly attacted to Ryuukie that way, that is all. And I like the fact that not just anyone who comes along with gifts and pretty words can win her. :) When she finally looses her heart, it will be completely and she will put forth the effort in that relationship that she puts forth now in her political carreer. :)

    GO SHURRIE!!

    @D.J. -

I agree, she did grow a little bit with Sakujun.

    @heather -

I’m not really, truly deep down rooting for anyone to be honest. I’ll be annoyed if she doesn’t end up with Ryuuki simply because I will allow myself to be a Ryuuki fangirl. Logically though, there are many different paths Shuurei could walk when it comes to finally blossoming in that intimacy/romance department she’s so sorely lacking in.

Showing lack of interest in Ryuuki? Well I don’t know about that. Seiran and Ensei get trust, but again the feeling I get that is generated when she’s on screen with them is more of sibling or dearest platonic friendship. With Sakujun it was breathlessness, shock, and maybe even a little lust? With Ryuuki it’s a certain fondness paired with exasperation. It’s hard to say if it’s lack of interest or merely distancing herself from him unconsciously… and here you’ll have to forgive me ’cause my comments are based on a mix of anime/manga/light novel. However, given that now she is displaying loneliness, I don’t think it’s going too far to say she’s finally getting a wake up call in deeper character development.

In the end, Shuurei and Ryuuki, Shuurei and Seiran, Shuurei and Reishin for all I truly care lol. Something inside me tells me that the author is going to throw us all a curve ball most likely. She might end up with Houju for all we really know o_O I’m just a little bored with her the way she is right now and I want to see more from her is what I’m really getting at. (I’ll have my little dream about Ryuuki on the side though, of course!)

  28. KaeBoo January 28th, 2008 8:43 pm

awwww, that’s really touching, heather. You really love Shuurei that much, huh? but still, she is one naive, idealistic (but hard working) little brat.

    :P

She thinks that everything will simply go the way how she wants things done. I should hand it to her, she is very persistent when she is fighting for something or someone, but admit it, sweetheart, when it comes to Ryuuki, she is just plain and simple chicken.

You’re right, she feels, but she doesn’t admit how she feels for him, which is honestly, plain and simple, unfair to the person who loves her dearly.

That’s the reason why she gets played, too. I love how Seiga taunts her every time. I love how she could practically admit defeat and Seiga seeing her as a worthy adversary. They are starting to have that kind of love-hate relationship that makes the development of their kind of relationship rather interesting.

and yes, impz, it looks like the flirting game to me. They may not end up together but possibly, to a certain degree, they would gain each other’s respect later on.

Jyuusan-Hime is just marvelous, she could be insistent but not imposing, she could be firm but not fierce. I like the way she carries out her mission and it would just be right that Ryuuki would consider her as a person in place of Shuurei if Shuurei won’t hit her head and realize that she has to bend in order not to break and admit how she feels.

oh, and delphyne, with the fandom that SaiMono actually has, I don’t think they would come up with an ending different than that of the Novel when the Novel is still on going, so yes, i’d put my stake on a season 3 even if it has not yet been announced. I just hope and pray that it comes out soon.

    :)

    @heather cont’d -

The points you raise about Seiran are very interesting, by the way. I’ll definitely be chewing on those over the next day or so. I’ll probably get back to ya about those at some point =)

  30. Ryume January 28th, 2008 9:03 pm

    @KaeBoo -

I wasn’t going to keep spamming up this post, but I had to respond to yours! I love the description of Shuurei btw, even if it is a bit on the strong side xD. And I think you worded better the feeling I get from Shuurei about Ryuuki >__

  31. SEAMaiden January 28th, 2008 10:28 pm

Sigh… No matter how many times we’ve been this through again and again, looks like we’ll never tire of Shuurei pairing as long as she’s single XP Man, SeiranXShuurei + RyuukiXJyuusan-hime hype is grating my nerves!!

  32. sjwrhej January 28th, 2008 11:44 pm

Most of the times animes come up with the most absurd and not worth it ending…With all the twist and building of each pairings, the directors always has a way to make something that will get you shouting ” noooo…why that kind of ending”. I just hope that this anime will not be like that.
For her assuming Ryuuki isn’t lonely anymore with Jyuusan Hime: I guess yep serves her right.I have been waiting for another girl which can make Shourei realize Ryuuki’s importance to her. But i still think Ryuuki is still lonely even when Jyuusan Hime cause he will always love Shourei… He promised her that he will wait for her even if it takes for eternity. I still want Shourei to suffer a little bit more agony because Ryuuki doesn’t spend time with her anymore or he is busy with his “emperor” work…But in the end I want Ryuuki to be happy and i believe that Ryuuki will always love and be happy with Shourei…The opening song gave me the impression of their Ryuuki and Shourei ending up together.

  33. vee January 29th, 2008 5:06 am

Yeah, i agree with you… I think this last part was just to make the plot more exciting… I’ve seen many animes and love stories who came up with this plan… Ryuuki was waiting for her, so I think Shuurei was very assured. And I think Sakujun is also correct about her being afaraid to fall in love. I think she was not yet ready, and I think deep in her heart she knows that Ryuuki will wait for her and that Ryuuuki loves her… but then, it can’t stay forever that way right? Even if Ryuuki says he’ll wait for her forever, he can’t practically do that beacuse he’s the emperor and he needs children…

I think that Jyuusan-hime sort of thing was just a way of making Shuurei realize that she loves RYUUKI… Wahhh.. I think i commented in this way beacuse I would be really really really sad if they will not end up together…

I love the way Ryuuki loves Shuurei.

And I remember, he already answered Jyuusan-hime that he love Shuurei… So, it’s just up to Shuurei to realize that she LOVES Ryuuki… I really think that will most certainly happen… :) :) :)

I REALLY REALLY HOPE, IT DOES. :)

  34. vee January 29th, 2008 5:09 am

I think because of the Jyuusan hime thing, the ending will be very worthwhile… Shuurei should realize that Ryuuki means a lot to her… And that Ryuuki is the only guy she will love… Please, make that happen… :) PLEASE, whoever’s directing this anime! :) HEHHEHE

  35. vee January 29th, 2008 5:47 am

Hey, could you recommend me any anime that looks like Saiunkoku Monogatari? I already watched Fishuugi Yuugi so, I’m looking for other animes.. :) Please, could you tell me… :)

  36. TEX January 29th, 2008 5:58 pm

^^^ Hey Vee, have you try Twelve Kingdoms?

Both Saiunkoku Monogatari and Twelve Kingdoms (Juuni Kokki) are based upon a main female character and her hardships that she has to deal with. Each unique and irresistible main character tries to help change her country with the help of her friends, and each anime has a heartwarming story.

  37. heather January 29th, 2008 8:04 pm

TEX- Good choice. I loved 12 kingdoms… and I own it.

Ryume, Renshin? Really? LOL Go ahead and have your fangirl dreams! I’m proud of you for admiting them. And Yeah, I kind of read the manga to. And I see more hints in the manga and side stories that Shurrie/Serian feel more than just brotherly/sisterly love. There is a spark there…but both are two cowardly to act. But she will probably end up with Seiga! I would die laughing if she actually ended up with Ensie! LOL (sorry just thinking of it now). That would really chafe Serian’s hide, for sure! He would kill Ensie!

And I would love to hear any other really interresting insights/ideas you have.

Kaeboo, of course I love Shuurie! But, I also like 13th princess. They both have differnt strengths and weakness that I admire. I just think everyone is being a little hard on Shuurie at the momment. I mean it isn’t like she has told Ryuukie over and over that she doesn’t want to marry him and doesn’t love him “like that”. Oh wait! She has, over and over and over. So why not cheer for her in finding someone else…Like Ensie! LOL I love Ensie and he would be my choice, but alas, I don’t cook well so he probably wouldn’t want me. :( How sad.

Anyway, Lets cheer our little star on!

  38. Ryume January 29th, 2008 8:36 pm

    @heather -

Reishin was a joke haha. I’m not a fan nor am I opposed to Reishin in particular. I was merely using him as an example as my way of saying “what will be, will be”. My fangirl dream only consists of Ryuuki and Shuurei lol. As much as you or I or anyone else hopes for this pairing or that, I’ve resigned myself to the will of the author in this matter. I’ve decided to stop kicking the dead horse of Shuurei’s romantic life and turned my eyes instead to being annoyed with her character as a whole haha. Well anyways, if you’re interested in reading my thoughts heather (and I make no promises about organization or clarity since I wrote the entry about my thoughts on relationships late it night when I couldn’t sleep along with the other entries), feel free! I’m not sure if you’ll gain new insight from me by reading it, but it’s all good =)

Thanks to Impz again for posting yet another lovely summary btw.

  39. vee January 29th, 2008 11:15 pm

@ Tex: Yeah, I’ve kind of wanted to watch Twelve Kingdoms, but then I wasn’t able to finish it… Is it as good as Saiunkoku Monogatari? :)

How I wish the next episode will be out.. Hmmm.. I really think Shuurei’s the only person who can take Ryuuki’s sadness away… Hehehehe

  40. vee January 29th, 2008 11:21 pm

@ heather: I think she was ready to tell Ryuuki how she feels on the 39th episode of Saiukoku Monogatari… But then, Ryyuki stopped her right? I think it’s because Ryuuki knows that if Shuurei tells him she loves her, he wouldn’t be able to resist, and Shuurei will not be able to fulfill her dream as an official.. I kind of thought of it that way, because when she heard Sai Rin commenting about “Balancing work and love”… Shuurei realized that if anyone would love her, she should respond back. I think that’s what it means.

And right now, Shuurei is really coward because she is really hurt deep down but she can’t accept the fact that she “thinks” Ryuuki already has Jyuusan-hime. …. Shuurei! Please realize, you’re only for Ryuuki.. hehhehe… I really want them to end up with each other. :)

  41. vee January 29th, 2008 11:29 pm

SHUUREI, just pick someone already, will you?! hehehhe… BUT PICK RYUUKI PLEASE…You will most certainly be happy about it… And I think Seiran will not oppose to it. Please be with Ryuuki. There was a sepcial about Saiunkoku Monogatari and it is centering Ryuuki and Shuurei’s character so I think they wil definitely end up together. Maybe Jyuusan-hime and Seiran will do? Hehehhehee.. :) But NOT JYUUSAN-HIME AND RYUUKI, please no…..

  42. sumomo January 30th, 2008 7:45 am

Hi all. It’s my first time to post here though I’ve been lurking since I fell in love with SaiMono and stumbled on this site.

Anyway, just my two cents’ worth but this episode made me excited about the possible twists in the Ryuuki-Shuurei romance. I think putting someone like Jyuusan-hime in the story would make for a more interesting dynamic. It would make both Ryuuki and Shuurei grow up a little more. I mean, I love the idea of them ending up together but right now, I don’t think they’re actually ready for that. The loneliness and trauma of Ryuuki’s childhood always made him ready to love the first person who shows him affection (I mean look at how he took to Shouka) and Shuurei was the first girl who actually cared, somehow. And Shuurei, well, I don’t think she’s comfortable with the idea of romantic love yet.

And I do agree with everyone else who thinks that Shuurei became quite complacent with Ryuuki’s love. Without her realizing it, I think she felt quite secure in his affections and always thought that he would be there when she was ready. In this episode, Shuurei is actually faced with the possibility of losing Ryuuki. And I guess it’s starting to upset her little emotional applecart. She’s now forced to confront her own feelings.

Honestly, I don’t mind if Ryuuki ended up with Jyuusan-hime. It would be tragic, heartbreaking, but more realistic given the fact that Shuurei is an official and he is the emperor.

But I’m not here for the realism. I want them together, dammit!!! ^_^

(THANK YOU, IMPZ, FOR TAKING THE TIME TO SUMMARIZE THE EPISODES. People like me who know nothing of Japanese are eternally grateful. ^_^)

  43. heather January 30th, 2008 5:12 pm

VEE — Actually, she was about to tell him no, and he knew it…that is why he stopped her and told her not to rush. If Ryuukie could, he would marry her A-sap.

I’m pretty sure the author will put Ryuukie and Shuurie together in the end (how sad). But for now, I can hope the author will allow Shuurie to have both her dream/desire as an offical as well as love (with whomever it will be). I have no doubt in her ability to choose a great man and love him with the passion and determination she puts into her work/dream come true.

Truth be told, I mostly watch for the political intrigue, not so much for the romance (although it is a nice icing to the cake of the story).

  44. vee January 31st, 2008 6:55 am

Well, we definitely do not know what she was about to say.. Hehehe.. Anyway enough about that, I just can’t wait to watch Shuurei… :) :) :) Hope the next episode’s a good one… :)

  45. vee January 31st, 2008 7:04 am

What are the possibilities of having a 3rd series? :) :) :) Anyne who might want to share their ideas? :)

  46. delphyne January 31st, 2008 5:42 pm

If we are all honest with ourselves, we all know that Ryuuki and Shuurei will end up together in the end….unfortunately.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t have fun along the way, thinking about other possible pairings…like Jyusan-hime…which, by the way, I am a totally for!!

  47. KaeBoo January 31st, 2008 6:22 pm

@delphyne… hey, we can never know about the ending until it ends. there are twists and turns along the way and the author is human. ideas change.

there may have been a line in the novels that say the reign of ryuuki is in its golden age when there’s kou and li in the administration and shi and ran in the military. there are lots of possibilities for the plot. so far, the ending that i am hoping for is a dead shuurei with her belonging to no one but her dreams and all those men hoping to have her but never really had her.

it may be a bit off for an anime like this but they could always have that kind of ending in an OVA of some sort.

    :P

anyway, there are but a few episodes left for this season and it would seem that it will be just enough for the anime to end where the novels also stopped. with the fandom that this anime has brought forth, there would most likely be a third season (or at least, that’s what i hope for) but it would come a lot later. they might start with a set of OAV or something before really going into the third series. who knows?

  48. Gypsy-chan February 1st, 2008 1:53 am

Wow, another summary update! Thanks impz! I read thru all the comments and totally agree with Heather. Girls usually marry guys like their fathers. In Shuurei’s case, she loves her father but thinks that he is very lazy (lol). So that is where Seiran comes in. He’s all those things Heather mentioned above and more. In Season one during the earlier episodes Ryuuki had a dream that Shuurei was going to marry Seiran because he was more mature than he was. It’s obvious that Shuurei is attracted to older more mature guys (like Seiran and Sakujun). She always think of Ryuuki as a “child” also Santa. I think if Ryuuki were more like Seiran she may have fallen for him early on. That is why Seiran/Shuurei pairing works. Also, as mentioned by other commenters, in a political sense, Shuurei will not be able to grow if she were Ryuuki’s wife. With Seiran, she can grow as far as she wants. He could easily be adopted into the Kou family if Shouka wishes. I know Reshin wouldn’t have a problem with it either because when it comes to protecting Shuurei, Seiran is just as ruthless as Reshin.

With the Seiran/Ensei friendship I think it is like a mock master/slave relationship. Ensei knows that Seiran has royal blood so when he commands him around Ensei knows Seiran can’t help it because ordering people around is what those in royalty, especially the son of an emperor, would do. So I think Ensei just indulges Seiran when Seiran gets that way. But if Seiran gets too pushy Ensei knows how to push back.

On separate note, while waiting for the next update of Saiunkoku, I watched and finished an anime called, Le Chevalier D’Eon (watched the subtitle one). I loved the political intrigue and the story. The time period 17th Century France was very interesting. D’Eon de beaumont character was a little like Seiran’s. Gentle, kind but with a dark side. But now that I’ve finished it I’m hungering for another time piece anime.

Does anyone know of another anime that has the feel of Saiunkoku/Rurouni Kenshin or Le Chevalier D’Eon?

  49. Gypsy-chan February 1st, 2008 5:15 am

Sorry, but one more thing on Seiran/Ensei. Their friendship reminds me of Ouran Host Club, where the twins Kaoru and Hikaru called Tamaki “My Lord”. Not like they respected him at first, they laughed at the way he spoke and said he acted like a foolish lord. From that point they would call him my lord even though Tamaki wanted them to call him king. So, when Seiran gets bossy with Ensei he can probably see that royal blood of Seiran boiling. LOL, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ensei answered him, “yes my liege or your majesty.” I think that would really tick Seiran off if Ensei did that. (but it would be fun to watch :)

  50. Liesel February 1st, 2008 7:41 pm

wow… the story is getting even better… :)
    thanks for the summary!

  51. heather February 1st, 2008 8:16 pm

    Gypse-Chan,

Try the 12 Kingdoms, it is a really good anime for the political intrigue. And it is by far one of the most unique anime stories I’ve seen so far. The author did an excellent job of creating a totally unique, new, yet beliveable world. I loved it so much I had to buy it.

As for the Ensie/Serian relationship…I don’t remember reading that Ensie knew Serian is Prince Sein, He called him the Little whirlwind. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Ensie figured it out…(because he is soooooo cooooolllll like that, always watching people). Ensie…Now he is my fangirl fix, although I do have to admit that there is something about Dark Serian I get a kick out of too! LOL Actually, now that I think about, Ensie could have learned from Sakajun, for the first time, who Serian is because Sakajun in front of Shurrie and Ensie, asked him what he should call him “Little Whirlwind or Your Highness? And it was Shurrie who snapped Serian back into his self by offering to make him their “Special Tea”. Which also let Sakajun know who her special someone was.

So Yes Gypse-Chan, I think after reviewing…Your right about Serian/Ensie relationship. If Ensie didn’t know before, he knows know.

What gets me, is that Shurrie never made the connection of Serain/Sein after Sakajun referred to him as Your Highness. I think she doesn’t want to know because then that means that Serian might one day be taken away from her and out of reach if he really is Prince Sein, the one people want on the throne. :)

  52. shaanjin May 15th, 2008 10:07 am

I think I once read the reason why she doesn’t regret never being a wife: She can’t have children. At least the latest novel contains that bit of information. But there was something about her body changing too… well, as long as we don’t have the full translation we won’t know for certain I guess.

  53. Amu August 22nd, 2008 12:36 am

Thanks heaps for the summary.. was able to clear all the missing points I had.

Kouki and Shuurei part was surprisingly funny and cute. About Juusan-hime x Ryuuki.. hope they won’t fall for each other during their visit to Ran province.

I also feel sorry for Shuurei though like everyone says, I’m also happy that she realized how lonely she can be without a proper relationship. So hope things will improve between her n Ryuuki in future.

About Seiran and Ensei, yep.. I too love that pair.. their moments are always interesting and funny. And about the way Seiran ‘commands’ Ensei, it must be his royal blood.. XD apart from that I think they’re more like inseparable soul friends.

@SEAMaiden: thanks for the info about Jiuzaigo. Was clueless what it was all about.

Seiran x Shuurei pairing.. I think that is more likely to happen if ever Ryuuki were to change his mind about Shuurei.. or vice versa. Also Shuurei has already declared Seiran as he’s her #2 special person (#1 being her father) in the sakujun’s arc, so yep, Seiran has more chances and he’d definitely wait for her even if it takes an eon.. though.. I still wish Shuurei would end up with Ryuuki.
