null with the full moon approaching. The huge conspiracy behind Jyuusan Hime is confusing almost everyone, and Shuurei is starting to wonder who is behind this. Even though the declaration seems to be the assassination of Jyuusan Hime, the assailants are also targeting Shuurei. The evidence can be seen from the poisoning of the water. Ryuuki is also waiting for the chance to at least see Shuurei ever since she moved back into the palace.

After a lapse of a week, Saiunkoku Monogatari returns with the plot thickening and the day of the moon approaching. Who is implicated in this maze of conspiracies?

Ryuuki asked if Shuurei is jealous when Jyuusan Hime arrived. She said she is, but she will be jealous if Seiran ever has a wife too. That left Ryuuki somewhat sad. About Kouyuu, Ryuuki complained that Kouyuu would scold him if he disturbs.. Shuurei told him to visit Kouyuu and apologize if Ryuuki is disturbing him. Ryuuki also felt that the residence seemed to have very poor defense, which aroused Shuurei’s suspicion. When Ryuuki went to visit Kouyuu, Kouyuu initially looked annoyed but eventually made some time for a drink.

The next day, Suou Shin came to visit, and talked about Seiga. He said that Seiga is probably busy with other civil work, and it sparks Shuurei’s inspiration. Seiga’s orders are possibly something different, as Anjun said “yes” from nowhere. When Anjun entered the room, he is surprised why there was a whole peach and a piece, and Shuurei explained that Kouki said it is unlucky to receive a peach from Anjun and decided to return everything. Anjun knew Shuurei wanted information and asked her about the price she is willing to pay. She said she will dress up as a soldier, but Anjun told her that she can chat with him before he finished the peach.

Shuurei thought about Seiga, and how he used Shuurei as a lure earlier on. Seiga is probably trying to get information about the assailant. Compared to Jyuusan-hime, something else is more important. Shuurei asked about the amount of high-ranked officials who died recently, and Anjun said 5. Shuurei realized that everyone in the residence is a lure to get someone out from the dark as she ran to get her normal clothing. We also see Seiga stating that all the plans are set up for the new moon, and the culprit has revealed his position. Shuurei, after checking the 5 people, realized something and ran to the prison only to find Ensei. Ensei is sent to the prison after saving Jyuusan Hime and a whole load of events but his talk is cut short by Shuurei. He is let out and they have a tender moment as Shuurei asked Ensei for help.

Shuurei also went over to Seiran, before she meets Jyuusan Hime for a long talk. Jyuusan said Shuurei probably wanted to talk about Shun, and she says that the plan of the triplets in the Ran clan is to test the capabilities of Ryuuki as an emperor by sending Jyuusan Hime. They only allowed a way out for this event coming in the new moon and it is up to Ryuuki himself to find it. Jyuusan Hime added that she is chosen due to Shun and his relationship with Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime also asked for more time to resolve it. Shuurei also asks whether Jyuusan Hime captured any assailants and whether they have any mark on their forehead. Jyuusan Hime said she found many to have them, those with the mark of a death row prisoner.

saimono31-2.jpg

The new moon came as Jyuusan Hime fought off some assailants as she mouthed out that she is surprised that the “person” is the one who is controlling this attack. Yuushun is also attacked but Seiran under the instructions of Ryuuki and Shuurei is repelled. Yuushun said that even Seiran who cares only about Shuurei finally grows up. Yuushun said that it is probably a test by Seiga to see Shuurei’s intellectual ability by leaving Yuushun unguarded. Seiran talked about Seiga’s arrogance, but Yuushun said that Seiga have exceptional ability and told Seiran that Ensei is here.

Shun finally appeared in front of Mou’s residence to kill him as Seiga stationed a lot of soldiers. Another masked woman also appeared as she proved to be extremely skillful as scores of soldiers fell almost immediately to her sword strokes. Just when Shun and the woman assassin are about to attack, Seiga said he cannot allow Mou to be killed yet. The female assassin is about to strike Seiga when an arrow deflected her blow. A dart is shot onto Mou’s neck. Shuurei asked if Seiga is not killed yet (with Seiga sarcastically saying that Shuurei spoke her mind), and Ensei moved forward to face off with Shun. Ensei can tell that Shun is very powerful, but Shun said that he still have to go somewhere else as Shun took the female assassin and ran off.

Seiga asked why Shuurei knows about the operation, and it is due to the poor security to lure the thief. However, the security is managed by Mou’s military division, and it is meant to allow the assassination to take place easily. Mou tried to resist that accusation, but Shuurei said Mou wanted his own daughter to be the concubine of the king. Plans are set to kill Jyuusan Hime before she enters the palace, and it must be done before that as any killings in the palace will be allocated to the nobles who are unhappy with the marriage. Then, the investigative department will be employed, and it will be dangerous.

Hence, it is logical to send assassins to attack himself, so that he can have the excuse that he is attacked by others who knows that he is in charge of protecting Jyuusan Hime. Shuurei said that all the recent deaths are officers in Mou’s military division and it is probably ordered by Mou. Shuurei explained that Seiga came to capture Mou, and Shuurei felt something wrong about her analysis. The “fake” attack seems way too real with the amount of casualties. Mou confessed that “someone” said that killing Shuurei and Jyuusan Hime is all right and Mou’s crimes of killing his officials will not be revealed. However, Mou died after that as Ensei noticed a dart stuck at his neck.

Thoughts

saimono31-3.jpg

This is perhaps one of the hardest episodes to review in the whole of Saiunkoku Monogatari Season II because many of the statements spoken by the characters just don’t make any sense to me. I have to rewatch the episode 3 times before finally getting the context of the conversation. First of all, the plot is carried out by Mou, who wanted Shuurei and Jyuusan Hime to be dead as part of the deal with “someone” in order to hide his own crimes of killing his own officials. Whoever that someone is, I have no clue, but he is perhaps the mastermind behind this assassination.

What is further confusing is the role that the triplets in the Ran clan have. They seem to know about this, and is looking at Ryuuki to provide the only way out to test his mantle as an emperor. I really cannot see how Ryuuki can be inserted in this formula, and I am completely lost about the relationship between Shun and Shuuei. Jyuusan Hime seems to also know about the conspiracy. That makes it extremely complicated because it seems that most of the people in the Ran clan knows what is going on, and is allowing it to happen.

Shun, from his last statement before he left the room, clearly do not work for Mou but for someone else. He said that he wished to fight with Ensei, but his mission here is done and that he has to rush over to another place. He is also glad that 1/2 of his mission is done. That means that there is something else required to be done. The female assassin is also very suspicious and Saiunkoku Monogatari does not usually throw any random character who is so strong to repel scores of men.

Hence, that only leaves one woman who is given some screen time in this arc: Shusui. I dare proclaim that Shusui is definitely the female assassin under the orders of the “kaa-san” from Hyou clan to aid Shun. Still, I do not have a reason or the link behind why Shusui is ordered to attack but even the hair color is the same. She is also from the “Black Wolf clan”, a group of assassins headed by Shouka in the previous era. Hence, it is rather apparent she is the masked assassin but why? Any answers from my commentators?

There is little humor in this episode but the start is great because we get invited to some Ryuuki disappointment that Shuurei did not show any romantic feelings toward Ryuuki again. I think Ryuuki should really be a horse now since horses really get more love than him. I also like Seiran’s amusing reaction when he realizes that the freeloader (aka Ensei) has arrived to the capital. Man, I really wonder why Seiran really hate Ensei so much when Ensei always tries to protect him. I guess the past still haunts Seiran.

So, any one has any concrete speculations on how the plot will move on further? I am completely lost and needs some guidance without evil spoilers. Heh!

I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one who was confused by this episode.

What I’m guessing is that someone who wants Juusanhime dead used Mou from the shadows, a plot device which has been used more often in this series. This person could have some connection with Riou or Sakujun, though I’m not sure….

Unfortunately to answer your questions/confusions would be to reveal MAJOR spoilers from the novel. Let’s just say that a lot of the shadowy connections have to do with that tragic past of Jyuusan-hime’s that I mentioned before.

I’ll just say this: Ryuuki’s ability as Emperor is being tested for a reason, and he is due for some major character development.

Yep that woman is definitely Shusui. i mean she has very good skills to kill like that and she was raised by shouka wasn’t she!!! He trained her to become one of the group of bandits that shouka was in…..

@Impz

Morning! It’s 10am Sunday here at my home, and this Saimono commentary wakes me up better than my usual Sunday papers ;oD I myself had to re-read the comment a few times to make sense of the thickening+confusing plot.

I’ll start from the beginning…
1. Shuurei’s jealous of Seiran getting married?!

*imagining SeiranXShuurei fans creating earthquakes with their joyful screams O_O*

Ohhhhkay, it was a little unexpected! On this part, the novels never mentioned about it (or maybe I’ve missed it somewhere). Whatever Yukino has in mind, Shuurei’s growing up is getting interesting! Apart from maturing through her investigative work, now she has to mature a little more on love issues, especially her own jealousy.

2. Ran triplets + Shuuei + Jyuusan-hime + Shun connection
About Shun, he has family connections with the Rans. But things soured between him + the Rans. Now that the Ran triplets suspected his whereabouts, let’s just say the Rans (including Shuuei + Jyuusan-hime) has a score to settle with him. That’s why Jyuusan Hime asked for time to resolve the issue with Shun.

The Ran triplets are very well-informed on Saimono matters outside their province, largely thanks to a traveller like Ryuuren & Shuuei + Jyuusan-hime working in the palace. Offering their Jyuusan-hime was also a challenge for Ryuuki. If Ryuuki refuses Jyuusan, he would risk their anger, hence losing their vital key support upholding the Saiunkoku monarchy. Ryuuki’s 2nd most powerful ally - the Hongs under the Ryuuki-hater Reishin is already considering turning their backs on Ryuuki. Ryuuki cannot risk another blow from his 1st powerful ally - the Ran clan.

Don’t get Jyuusan + Shuuei all wrong. She’s not out to topple Ryuuki. And Shuuei would rather choose Ryuuki over any other emperor candidates.

3. Shisui vs. mysterious woman assassin
The woman assassin + Shisui are the same person…but Shisui does not seemed to be herself. Clue: remember the days she kept hearing voices in her head? I don’t think Shouka, the head of the Black Wolves even knew she have gotten this deep under the voices’ influence. She + Shun are definitely under high orders from a noble. Exactly what orders she’ve gotten to with Shun, I’m unsure but I think it has all got to do with ultimately luring out Ryuuki.

4. Mou’s assasination
Would be lovely to welcome other commentators on this. I’m trying to re-read this novels on this part but haven’t quite grasped it.

Thanks for the update! Happy to hear Shuurie’s jealousy over her hot live-in body guard Serian! (Shurrie/Serian fan cheering with delight!) And am VERY, VERY happy to see Ensei’s back!

well you have to understand the relationship between Shun and the Ran clan and specifically his relationship to Jyuusan hime and Shuuei to help clarify some of your questions :D
The anime assumes the viewers are somewhat familiar with the novel hence the confusion in its narration.

Shiba Jin aka Shun belongs to the Shiba clan who have for years served under the Ran clan.
Jin’s father and Jyuusan Hime’s mother were cousin and something tragic occurred that affected both Jyuusan Hime and Shun forever.
In terms of relationship Jyuusan Hime was once betrothed to Shun (who is the man she loves and for whom she sacrifice herself to do what her brothers ordered in order to ’safe’ him)
Shun and Shuuei were one time bestfriends.

kou_shuurei added these pithy words on Jan 05 08 at 8:59 pm

hey, impzie… I’d agree with l-chan on this. you’d probably be in for major spoilers if you really want these cleared out. Hehehe :P

I wonder if charmian could drop by to shed some light a bit without really giving spoilers. :D

IMHO, however, questions will be answered in the succeeding episodes.

@seamaiden: re seiran getting married and novels, try to re-read. What she said was more like she wouldn’t know how she would feel if seiran gets married (I think)

The next eps would be very interesting. Watch out, ryuuki-shuurei/ryuuki-jyuusan hime fans! You guys might want to follow these closely.

Novel and novel summaries now leave almost everyone at the edge… The anime’s 2nd season might end at the same point.

(insert evil laugh here)

I’ll post again later on. :D

Shuurei jealous if Seiran ever has a wife? Oh yeah!!! Gypsy-chan squeals in delight!!! Seiran/Shuurei forever! (New Year’s resolution number 3, start Seiran/Shuurei website ^_^) Poor Ryuuki. Anyhoo, back to the story, whoa! this sounded really complex, but I love it! I think in this episode Shuurei redeemed herself by figuring out the Mou clan responsible for killing of officials. Also, it must have been pretty scary for Shuurei to find out that the Mou clan plotted to kill her and Jyuusan hime. Oh, thanks to commenter kou_shuurei for explaining the relationship of Jyuusan-hime and Jin. I’m so glad Ensei is back. I love the interaction between Seiran and Ensei. It was also interesting to read how Yuushun said that even Seiran who cares only about Shuurei finally grows up. This is definitely what I would say the “Maturity Arc”. We see Seiran’s growth and his moving toward the military more and more, then there is Shuurei in the investigative department. I think it is the perfect place for her to grow as a person and as an official. Last there’s Ryuuki that is being forced to mature as emperor by means of the Ran Clan. As SeaMaiden said above, if Ryuuki refuses Jyuusan-hime, he risks the support of the second most powerful clan. It’s good to see Shusui in action. I really do like her character. I hope they will develop it more in the season. Well, with the way things are developing, I’d say a third season is definitely in the works. It would be a waste if the anime ends abruptly in season 2. I can’t wait until the next episode. As usual, thanks IMPZ for bringing us more updates.

@KaeBoo

Umm, sorry I’ve got you wrong about the Seiran getting married issue. I’m trying to catch that part again n the novels. I’m trying to say I’m surprised that Shuurei actually got jealous thoughts of imagining Seiran having a spouse a.k.a getting settled into marriage at the time she’s unsure of love.

I’m rewatching Season 1 on Animax channel and can’t help feeling that a big piece of clue about Seiran’s past in chunked in here. Sakujun + Seiran knew each other too well, almost like brothers. Both could not be killed, neither preferred to be left alive. Both were drawn into darkness, unlike Ensei who could not be persuaded into it, so says Seiran in the anime. Sakujun, being the mastermind of the Satsujin band, must have great influence on Seiran, his star. At first, Seiran must have enjoyed soemthing about the Satsujin band until he figured out Sakujun went too far with some horror. Thus, began his unforgiving vengeance with Sakujun and everything vile about Satsujin, and perhaps develop shorter tempers as he grew up.

Seiran + Ensei are perhaps the outcasts among the band members. They must have share same philosophies they don’t admit openly in spite of their glaringly opposite personalities. Then again, Ensei being a carefree guy must have gotten Seiran into embarassing troubles a few times. That’s why Seiran is always “aarggghh, I’d rather jumped off the cliff than entertain that wild bear again!”

So, what you think on this?

SEAMaiden added these pithy words on Jan 06 08 at 2:19 am

Re: the whole conversation about Seiran hypothetically getting married: I think I actually do address this conversation in the summary of novel 11 on my site. It is in the books. I have to say that the spin on it in the novels is a little different from how it’s superficially interpretable, though.

I don’t want to spoil Impz, so I’ll just say the following, that the true mastermind between Mou’s death hasn’t been revealed and Shun’s true master hasn’t been definitely revealed in the novels anyway, but the next episode should explain a lot of things.

charmian added these pithy words on Jan 06 08 at 4:22 am

Thanks for the summary and screenshots.

I agree with you that this ep is confusing and I agree with the comment earlier which says it seems that the animators assume people have already read the novels.

I think from the reaction Shusui has had to Riou she is being influenced by his clan and I guess you can say the intro and earlier episodes this season all point towards lots of influence from the Hyou clan. I gather that there is some matter taking place between the Hyou and the Ran and everyone else is getting involved.

Its nice to see that Ryuuki still has Kouyuu on his side. The offer to drink together was a nice touch.

There is some history between Jyuusan-hime, Shun (not his real name) and Shuuei. Seiran should also know what is going on. I wouldn’t want to spoil that bit for you.

It also seems that a lot of the officials know what’s happening but they can only target/arrest certain individuals.

Ryuuki is being tested as well because everyone knows he is /was a reluctant emperor and it seems he has alienated a lot of higher ups AND he seems to be losing the support of those closest (Shuuei).
I think the nobles who wanted their daughters to become royal concubines were always unhappy with him BUT when they found out that he seems to actually like women and was not really gay that pissed off some of them and so slighted families are holding grudges against him. (this is my speculation)

bootoye added these pithy words on Jan 06 08 at 9:06 am

I think the reason Shusui is doing this (as I remember from the novel summaries) is that she’s coming under the Hyou clan’s powers. This has been happening ever since Riou Jr. activacted the spell that had been cast on her (that’s sort of how the Chinese subs explained it), and is why she’s in pain, because she’s trying to (unsuccessfully) fight off their influence over her.

Yes, you’ll see Ryuuren again playing a bigger role later on. This time it becomes clearer than ever why his awful flute meant a lot to his identity.

And yes, Shuuei X Shisui will cross paths again but it’s a tiny bit tragic. Wait to see what I meant later. So, be prepared…

Seriously though… this episode seemed to have opened a lot of things and gets everything in a “hyped up but don’t know where to go next” feel.

“maturity arc”… perhaps one may indeed call this next episodes as such… but it is still a long way to go.

By the way, charmian, thanks. If you guys want to read the scene in the novel, you can go to her blog. her name has a link so just click and you’ll be taken there.

Liesel added these pithy words on Jan 09 08 at 8:23 am

@Kaeboo: ya, it’s really frustrating when you know that there must be a certain meaning in something happening, but when they all start suddenly like a pack of firecrackers raising hell, it only confuses me quite a hell lot. I really want to know the link of the Hyou clan to this case. My speculation is that Hyou clan is also observing the situation to see if Ryuuki is good enough to be king. The additional incentive to get Shuurei back into the Hyou clan should be a reason for them to be involved, since I doubt they will let anyone kill Shuurei by any chance.

The others, I am not sure.
