So it takes three Azadistani to burn a flag, one to do it and two to shoot wildly into the air…
So I have just finished with family gatherings and should be returning to some normalcy by the end of the week. Still Sunrise didn’t feel festive this year and gave us all a big lump of coal in the form of this episode since Saji and Louise are still getting a crap load of screen time. Even if Ms. Wang had a change of dress, I wanted a whole fashion show this Christmas. I feel ripped off, bloody bastards…

Ah so is halberd Azadistani for idiot or brainless fucktard?
Good to know that Sunrise has done a bit of scant research involving a post oil bust Middle East. It is one of the few things I agree with the grand poobah of “state within a state” Ralph Peters and the editors of Armchair General on. If the Middle East ran out of oil there would less Westerners, Eastern Europeans, and Asians putting their finger in the Middle East pie. Given how much internal strife these places have it’s not too far fetched to see the Middle East as the new Africa in terms how depressing the whole situation is. It’s rather ironic that the Middle East suffers too much outside attention while Africa gets far too little in proportion. Granted that Africa has an abundance of mineral wealth they lack oil in quantity like the Gulf States, and since every great nation wants an army to match, oil is of great strategic importance for every great power. Though I have to say that for the Middle East to try and fight against the HRL, AEU, and Union they must have had to invest in one hell of a fleet or air force to bring war upon their far flung enemies otherwise they were incredibly retarded to fight three major power blocks in their own back yard at the same time.

I guess CB relies on doctors that got degrees by mail, that or dyeing of gray hair caught on in academic circles.
While I do miss Soma it was nice to see Shirin working her magic on Marina. I just wished Shirin would have tried to reformulate their military along post-Versailles German lines. In essence the ideal touted by Hans von Seeckt, small professional army where political activity was strictly forbidden. Sure the top brass would loathe all non-soldiers, but at least they would respect the civilian government enough to not get involved in civilian matters even if they really didn’t give a damn who won out. Guess Shirin has to learn to deal with soldiers as well as politicians and unwashed religious fanatics. I question Sunrise on choosing to use Azadistan as a proxy for Iran rather Palestine given how it’s the seculars against the religious nut cases with AK-47s. Ah well I fully expect some more Sunrise peanut gallery remarks about the future of Persia since in 2307 it seems that Middle Eastern borders were reworked from the old straight lines those bloody westerners drew. I guess Shirin has a long ways to go from being the new Li Si. Instead of pandering to the conservatives at this point she has the perfect excuse to wipe them out had she had the military power to do so. Obviously the “no change” nut cases don’t want to play parliament, why not oblige their cries of destroying the opposition with God’s lightning, with the obliteration of the conservative opposition with secular firepower. Besides it’s not like anyone gives a damn about these animated characters getting blown to bits, in fact most viewers are probably hoping for more violence.

Yeah because founding your nation state upon one religion always works out…
Since the reformists have the upper hand with some good old fashioned Union support, I would dearly hope Shirin is not above using the Union to massacre the coup plotters. It was strange to see all those English protest signs, though I guess by 2307 English has conquered the even the most unstable regions of the world. In fact I wonder if Sunrise really thinks that the Quran will only have an English version…because I was under the impression that any translated version was a pale dilution of the teachings of Allah. If so it seems that in 2307 adherents of Islam will have lost the true Arabic texts and devolved into a bunch of heretics given the lack of Arabic in the episode. I do hope Sunrise is just being lazy about this and not declaring that in the future all of Muslims will be apostate. That’s for God to decide after God comes forth during Armageddon to spit upon all of humanity as a bunch unwashed idiots, except for the Jews. After all how many time have they been persecuted?

Yes, please get one before your bonding ritual.
Marina’s propaganda machine sucks. There is nary a single praise worthy or grammatically correct slogan to be found and really even the commies have done better. Still nice to see Marina touted as paramount leader and the face of Azadistan, even if the flag and her dress make the poster bland. Ah well Shirin at least managed to achieve one great feat, the revitalization of the monarchy in Persia, and I thought that the Persians were intent on keeping their Islamic Republic rather than have another go at gambling on a Shah. That or Iran was laid low by a resurgent Iraq or Afghanistan between now and 2307. One thing that bugs the hell out of me with this nice neat little divide between the sects, after all even with the current Sunni-Shia divide there is still a lot of nationalism being discounted here.

Indeed, the Middle East dislikes foreigners something about them being infidels who intervene in their internal affairs.
While the people of Azadistan make sport of killing each other pedo-bear Corner and the UN, break out some alcohol in their high rise hotel suites to enjoy the show. Guess there were no blue helmeted peace keepers to spare this time around. honestly since the reformists could not count on their own army 100% it made sense to call upon a great power just in case the Azadistani Army was no up to snuff, but that’s just me a simple grunt uninvolved in politics. The Gundams come to pwn everything that moves yet again with Setsuna showing off how good he is at using brute force in preparation for the next episode where he levels up in life to become the resurrected Gundam Jesus. Graham Acre disappoints me with his He-man attitude and trying to take on Dynames single handedly. Even if the bastard is an ace even he should know better than not taking a wingman to help him. Of course Acre is not it own man, his ass belongs to Uncle Sam same as every other grunt who enlists. What just because he’s and ace he gets to think that he’s special?! Damn it Acre there may be an “I” in win, but there is always a “We” weapon. If you want to duel join some other army and fuck them up with your glory hounding I am sure Patrick of the AEU could use a friend. I had hoped that the Flag Fighters were more than a mere tool for front man Acre, but it seems that the lack of a fourth member was intentional as a means to remove any vestige of current USAF doctrine. I can only hope Soma is going to be drafted into the Flag Fighters to keep Acre’s ego in check. Well at least Graham is a decent enough pilot even if he doesn’t use a wingman. I like that he can hold his own, I just wish Graham was more professional and less hot headed about it, he has support this time there is no excuse for sending his men off on some inconsequential errand while being jammed.

In Azadistan panhandlers leer at you!
Lockon is a dolt for not seeing why the Union gunned for him the moment he opened fire. Of course they were protecting Azadistan; CB is a threat to everyone and hence must be dealt with. Besides whom were they going to shoot the brown ones or the other brown ones? The Union could not even tell conservative from reformist. Ali gets what 10 seconds to spout his lines and waste good liquor, but doesn’t do much else. For a terrorist mastermind he is surprisingly incompetent. Really if he wanted to bring Azadistan to the point of no return he could have simply killed Ayatolla Rasul to end any hope of reconciliation permanently. Even better hang the corpse upon some holy site to really get the crazies going, but such is Sunrise’s top mercenary.

Really? Well I guess the lack of wrinkles, crooked and missing teeth, fucked up eye brows, a lazy eye, and dead rat smell were dead give aways. Here I thought it was the turban…
The peanut gallery got a lot more screen time again with Saji trying to bang Louise’s mom and waste my time. Kinue did some research into some scientists who disappeared, though they look more like grad students than holders of PhDs. I am beginning to suspect that the writers of Sunrise are planning to bastardize Atlas Shrugged given the whole it was a “defection of the scientific community” slant they are trying to push here. Man grade inflation must have gotten really bad by 2307, unless of course the doctors all graduated from the University of Phoenix…

Shit, I can’t beat that statement.
Well all in all while Acre taking on Dynames was nice, it was pretty lame since there was no Soma and Setsuna reclaimed the spotlight this time around with his angsty ways. Even if Marina is a cry baby that is unworthy of her titles, at least Shirin has found ways to make he snap out of it and motivate Marina. No doubt the end of episode 13 Azadistan will forget about God and bow down before Resurrected Gundam Jesus…

rollchan added these pithy words on Dec 28 07 at 8:00 amFrom what I understand (over half of my fellow university students are Muslims of one stripe or another) since the Qur’an is God-dictated, there can be no translations, only ‘interpretations’ into other languages. But I am not a theologian or a Religious Studies student, so I may have that wrong.
Perhaps in Sunrise’s future English dominates the Middle East as a spoken language and Arabic has become a religious language akin to the Catholic use of Latin. Sounds far-fetched to me, but then this is a series about robots slicing each other up.
I await Setsuna’s metamorphosis into Gundam Jesus with bated breath. Or not.
IKnight added these pithy words on Dec 28 07 at 1:38 pmIt just amuses me that Shirin is Farsi for “sweet”. It is a common name around the Middle East, though.

That’s what Setsuna did, isn’t it? I think he’ll win his people over. It’s what they do in these shows, ainnit?
“since the Qur’an is God-dictated, there can be no translations, only ‘interpretations’ into other languages. ”
Yep, Japanese and Japanese for this show. Kinda funny how that works.
“So it takes three Azadistani to burn a flag, one to do it and two to shoot wildly into the air…”
I’m just curious as to why the burner is wearing the all-blue outfit. Guess the most stylish one gets the cake (and the privilege)?
And that was really awkward, what with Saji and Louis’ MOM for goodness sakes! You’d think…ah never mind, I guess ya wouldn’t know what to think anymore. It’s a small world after all, it’s a small world after all…
LockOffStratus added these pithy words on Dec 29 07 at 5:16 pmWhat exactly is up with this article. It reads exactly like something Jason Miao would have written, right down to the pointless Sunrise bashing and the Miss Wang comment. Not the way to go if you have a bone to pick with the series over something.

Maybe it is written by someone who is lucid enough to see through the half-assed attempt to insert half-assed politics in hope to make it “OMG SO COMPLEX!”?
Not everyone is impressed by Sunrise’s efforts to give this dimension, you know.

In episode 12 , Massoud Rachmadi mentioned to be a “rasul” in translation….! (rasul=prophet”messenger from The God)
Well, that’s not true because NO PROPHETS AFTER (Muhhamad),also, the original japanese movie mentioned his full name as “Rasa Massoud Rachmadi” ,not “rasul” as a title.
To prove it,here is the original text from “Wikipedia” about him:
“Massoud Rachmadi (マスード・ラフマディー)
Voiced by: Shinya Fukumatsu
An Imam in Azadistan with strong influence in the conservative factions of the Azadistani Parliament. Known as “Rasa” among the conservative factions, when Marina decided to accept the role of princess, he volunteered to become her opposition in order to contain the conservatives from getting radical and violent. His sudden abduction by Ali’s forces had touched off a coup d’état with radical elements of the Azadistani army leading it against Marina and the rest of her reformist-leading government. He was later tracked down and rescued by Setsuna, Lockon and Hong Long, and returned to make a joint statement with Marina, which temporary quelled the rebellion.”
you can visit Wikipedia to be sure.^_^
