I initially thought that this is merely a recap of the series once again, but it turns out to be something really interesting. The theme of this interview/talkshow is “Who is the future romance and marriage partner for Shuurei?”. For all of us who are watching this for the romantic element (and most of us do), this is perhaps one of the most hilarious specials that is available. The seiyuu for Ryuuki, Seiran, Kouyuu and Shuuei were invited to give their views on the prospective partners for Shuurei.
Do you want to know what they believe to be a great partner for Shuurei and how they decide their choice?
Kouyuu
Shuuei’s seiyuu laughed at Kouyuu, saying that Kouyuu cannot save Shuurei if she ever gets attacked physically (which seems to happen quite a bit). Kouyuu’s seiyuu was skeptical, since Kouyuu hated women. However, with the marriage proposal by Kurou in the second season, it seemed that he was extremely nervous and might seem like a good pair. The host proposed that Kouyuu has huge experience as an official. Moreover, keeping the power within the Kou Clan met more leverage for Shuurei’s future as an official and the two seemed to communicate well.
They also mentioned his lack of direction sense, his huge concern over Shuurei after the marriage proposal and his inability to drink being pure and cute traits. Seiran’s seiyuu felt that the deterring factor was the fact that the relationship seemed like a mother and son, as Shuurei’s maternal instincts come into play. An amusing point was when Kouyuu’s seiyuu imitated the reaction of Kouyuu during the time, as he stammered out Shuurei before screaming out loud. That is clearly Kouyuu all the way!
Reishin
As they mentioned Kouyuu, they also noted that Reishin will follow with a marriage between Kouyuu and Shuurei. Kouyuu’s seiyuu did mention that a marriage between Reishin and Shuurei would be good since Reishin will protect Shuurei from any form of trouble due to his great love toward his niece.
Shuuei
Everyone in the audience hall laughed when Shuuei’s character image appeared (a sign of amusement and disbelief, perhaps?). Despite the lack of dialog between Shuurei and Shuuei, the Ran and Kou clan were the two major clans. The marriage between the two clans would be extremely advantageous for Shuurei’s aim to be an official and Shuuei would be the best support for her career. He can also protect Shuurei from any physical harm (compared to Kouyuu). Moreover, Shuuei seems to exude the mature vibes like Sakujun, the man that wavered the emotions of Shuurei. He also had a lot of “love experiences” with women.
Despite Shuuei’s seiyuu assurances that Shuuei would be a good husband, the majority of the interviewees considered his womanizing attitude to be a huge problem. Shuurei would feel very worried as a wife with a womanizing husband like Shuuei. Shuuei’s seiyuu tried to defend himself that these love experiences was to make him a “better man” and he would be a proper man if he married. Whatever that means, hah!
Seiran
Seiran seems to have great support as there was loud applause and sounds of “KYAAAA” emitted from the audience. Seiran is always supporting Shuurei, and he is perhaps the one that understands Shuurei the most. They added that Seiran was the only male that she ever showed her complete weakness and is always the one she runs to when she cries. Despite Shuurei’s firm beliefs and outspoken nature, Seiran is always the one running to protect her and reassure her.
However, the problem is that Seiran has a lot of secrets such as his relationship with Ryuuki and his past experiences before meeting Shuurei. Seiran’s seiyuu said that he had absolutely nothing to hide, eliciting laughter as the host reiterated that she was asking about Seiran, not him. He did not want Seiran to end with Shuurei, as the fact that he calls her “ojou-sama” seems to show that he has no interest in advancing the relationship into romance. His seiyuu did mention that the often use of “ojou-sama” made him a waiter in a tea cafe, calling out “ojou-sama” gently to customers.
Ryuuki
Ryuuki is the one that is most direct among the men in his love toward Shuurei and always gazes at Shuurei with love. It seems that Ryuuki is the best choice but Shuurei never reciprocates. Ryuuki’s seiyuu agreed that Ryuuki is the front runner, even though he felt that he did not feel like it is the case lately. Seiran’s seiyuu felt that as Seiran, he supported Ryuuki but his personal view was that Kouyuu and Shuurei were more suitable as a couple. Seiran’s seiyuu also “back stabbed” Ryuuki’s seiyuu by stating that Ryuuki’s character was extremely pure but his seiyuu was a playboy.
Decision time!
They also tried to count the number of seconds that any of the guys appeared on the anime together with only Shuurei for the whole first season. The scenes can be of both of them fully visible, only the hands, even if the head was cut off and no matter how small the characters are. As you can see, Ryuuki’s screen time with Shuurei was more than the other three combined. Hence, it is decided that Ryuuki is the winner of the competition. I do pity Shuuei though. He has 0 seconds with Shuurei from Episode 21 to 39.
It is a pity that they did not include the other seiyuus, such as Tantan (Suou Shin), or Ryuuren. Nevertheless, it is definitely a very interesting insight by the seiyuus, who breath and live by their characters. Do you agree or not?

Wow I can’t wait until this comes out. Yes it would have been good to have the other Seiyuus there. I still have trouble matching the voices to the real people when (to me) they belong to the bishounen characters. The characters are soo different that there are good points to all matches, but I’m more than midly happy that Ryuuki is the most fitting for Shuurei - but was there really any doubt?

Although I think I am most amused that Shuuei was one of the potential suitors mentioned. He has shown no interest in Shuurei at all. If we are looking at this seriously it would be Ryuuren who would be the suitor from the Ran family. 
Ryuuki is my personal choice for Shuurei.

Despite the dampening by Seiran’s seiyuu, Seiran and Shuurei can develop to a romantic relationship. But i guess Seiran is not going to try due to his interest in protecting Shuurei.
@Rollchan: No no, they are the original seiyuus! It’s an interesting watch for sure. My girlfriend is also asking me to make a translation for this episode. I might do a decent one eventually or maybe not. It’s way too much effort X_X
@Kim: ya, you should really watch it because they even have a drama about Shuurei’s birthday which I did not summarize. That one is even better because you see Ryuuki’s seiyuu going all chirpy and anxious when he realizes that everyone fed Shuurei mikan except him. It’s quite amusing to say the very least.

Impz you are the best!! That’s for this great update. Well my vote is definitely for Seiran. I love Seiran/Shuurei pairing. I disagree with his seiyuu when he says that when Seiran calls her “ojou-sama” it seems to show that he has no interest in advancing the relationship into romance. Seiran was taken into the house of Shouka and his wife and took on the role as retainer. So it would be only naturally for him in a servant/master relationship to always show proper respect to the daughter of a noble family. Seiran has royal blood but he was stripped of his title and everything after being exiled. Shuurei is the Kou family little princess. So as retainer he has vowed to always protect her and her happiness because it’s his way of showing gratitude to her family. I strongly believe if given the opportunity and approval by Shouka, Seiran would definitely pursue a relationship with Shuurei. He told Shuurei duing the Sa Sakujun arc that he knew one day she would fall in love. But if she was going to choose a man like Sakujun then Seiran was a better man than Sakujun because he only wished for her happiness. I think if Shuurei would have agreed to his noble attempt to protect her happiness, Seiran would not have backed down. It’s obvious that he loves and cherish her as well as highly respect her father. Shouka would definitely accept Seiran as son-in-law and (he knows Seiran’s past) and I know Shuurei would accept Seiran’s past after hearing his tragic past. If she ends with Ryuuki I’m good with that too, but first choice… Seiran all the way!!!!

For those who doubt Serian’s love for Shuurie, you should read a side story where not even Ryuukie is spared for Serian’s jealous wrath! LOL

ShuueiXShuurei?! This is one heck of a joke I can’t stand XD Isn’t he’s gearing more for Shisui? Then again, although I’m now anticipating a ShuueiXShisui pairing, I understand if Shisui won’t return her feelings for him. As a woman myself, it’s a scary thought to be commited to a womaniser :O Plus also, Shisui’s three years older than him. If a girl is going out with a younger guy, that’s fine as long as he’s mature and the girl don’t find herself hen-pecking him. Kouyuu…hmm, I’m glad that KouyuuXShuurei can communicate naturally well. Very vital in any relationship, especially marriage. Not too bad an idea for their union when it comes to him protecting her adequately in the field she’s most active at-the political arena. But Kouyuu can get lost within his own manor, for heaven’s sake! Imagine him having his own children one day running all over his house :O
Ahhh, the last BUT NOT LEAST(hehe), RyuukiXShuurei…honestly, they’re my ideal pairing. I’ve been gearing and am still faithful for this pairing He’s got the riches, the power, the brains, his nobleness, his sincerity + good heart to love unconditionally that makes you just sit up straighter everytime his presence comes on screen. He’s occasionally spoilt & naive, true, but I find him more endearingly approachable, unlike the cold Seiran, indecisive Kouyuu or ‘James Bond’ Shuuei.
Enough said from me. Wonder what Yukino Sai is thinking about this circus speculation of Shuurei pairing?

The original book mentions that Shuurei and Kouyuu was the two greatest stateman while the Shueei and Seiran was the two greatest general of Ryuuki’s reign according to ‘historians.’ If you consider how Confucism abhors idea of king’s wives meddling in the state affairs, this really dampens Ryuuki’s chance. Even if they don’t hold the Consucist ideals, a queen would not need governmental post in order to be involved in the decision making process, yet we need to note that she was listed as ‘Civil Officer’, a post that is below that of a Queen. Now the author is free to make Shuurei a queen and a beauracrat, but that is taking things too far away from feminist independence theme that is hinted here and there.

SEAMaiden you make some really good points all all the pairings. But with Seiran I have to say that he has to keep his secret of being former second prince from Shuurei. For one, why would Seiran as retainer tell his most intimate secret to Shuurei when they haven’t started a relationship. I guess he figures if Shuurei marries Ryuuki she will find out that way. Also, in the first few episodes it was and still is obvious why Seiran must hide his identity. Ryuuki is losing favor with the other clans. I think in the last episode the triplets from the Ran Clan still favor Seiran/Sein as emperor. If anyone else find out, Ryuuki’s life would be in danger. Seiran would never do anything to risk Ryuuki’s life. He may be cold and cruel, but after reading the side story of Seiran, the poor guy had to fight and kill just to survive while living in the palace. He has a lot of issues, but Shuurei is the only woman who can help him through it. So my vote is still for Shuurei/Seiran pairing.

I can’t wait to see the next episode. Once Ryuuki finds out that Shuurei is there he will definitely try his hardest to win her love.

I think it’s pretty cool how the seiyus’ are so into each of their characters. It’s also funny to see the voices attached to their real faces which are nothing like the anime. Just like radio hosts never look like how you expect. But I guess they’re chosen for their voices not their faces…
This whole concept was pretty cool and funny. But I can’t help thinking this is just another strategy by the animators to drag out the season. I’m just thankful they haven’t stooped to coming up w/ empty filler plots.

@Alida: Well, you got to applaud them for having something special in which it allows a better discussion. As much as fillers (we don’t like it) are concerned, it is always good that they give some analysis through the eyes of the seiyuus.
@Delphyne: LOL, I am not sure whether I will finish by Christmas. The sub idea came because I did promise my girlfriend that I will collaborate with her one day to do a sub where I will be a translator. Since I do not get to spend enough time with her lately due to some issues (and we are already in a long distance r/s), I decided to at least do this.
In terms of progress, I have translated around 8 minutes of the show and will be doing the rest later. I do need to find the raw (in .avi format) for it to hardsub it for everyone. =/ And yes, I will definitely sub the birthday special. there’s no logic if I sub it half way, no?

Having said that I think Seiran would also actually support her having a relationship with Kouyuu if Shuurei were to decide that.

Hmmm, you have a good point there that I haven’t seen before. It’s a wise move from Seiran’s part not to reveal his royal lineage in the currently turbulent time of Ryuuki’s reign. There’ll be a civil war again once the info reach the wrong ears :O But there’s something bothering: why couldn’t he tell Shuurei? I understand if he doesn’t tell the whole world but why not her? It’s not like she has a big gossiping mouth. Surely she can keep secrets. For now, we aren’t sure if he wants to pursue her romantically. If he does, he should tell her personally the heavy truth before lies and situations gets too complicated to untangle anymore in the future.

@delphyne: i know i’ve always wonder that……..and you really would know how shuurei would react if she knew! but have you ever thought about if when shuurei entered the imperial harem the first time instead of meeting ryuuki she met seiran(or seien) instead under the sakura tree….. i really wonder how he would react… i mean having the personality he has now and being emperor…….. that would definitely put an interesting turn to the story but i’m glad that ryuuki is emp because we can see all his cuteness!

as far as everyone is well aware of, the prince that was exiled is missing. imagine the chaos that it would create when they find out and confirm that he lives! it would endanger not only his brother but everyone that he has learned to hold dear in his life.

if it was ryuuki, he can support her, but he can not support her dreams, given the situation where they are at. the more he supports her dreams, the more their situation becomes inimical to the kind of love that he aims for from her.

kouyuu, intellectually, they are a match, but he has so many fears that he has to conquer first so he can support shuurei as a person.
shuurei is like a horse with blinders on. she has her eyes for her career alone. i’d rather see her fulfilled as an official and the rest of the boys happy in their own personal note.
@kaeboo: That may be right about why Seiran won’t tell anyone who he really is…but EVERYONE knows already anyway. It’s like a secret that everyone knows! I think Shuurei is the only one in their group who doesn’t know who Seiran really is. Even Jyusan-hime knows Seiran’s true identity. So isn’t it safe to say that Shuurei will probably find out someday and most likely not from Seiran or Ryuuki directly.

Trust me, Gia, after reading the novel summaries, he WILL mature And I can safely say all Ryuuki fans will be proud of him once he gets clearer directions of what he wants to do next.

The original novels are in Japanese. Most of us are reading the translations, written in summary. Try this link: http://yuzutea.net/log/tag/saiunkoku/ It has detailed summaries for all Saiunkoku books, right up to the latest volume (Volume 12, by the way)
According to http://www.animenewsnetwork.com , Saiunkoku airings has been on a break for 2+ weeks. Ep 30 will be released this coming Saturday, but dear me, that’ll be the last Saimono episode for year 2007. We have to wait for the Epsisode 31 next year lol (waaaaaaaaaaahh!)

well for me i definitely want shuurei to be with ryuuki because unlike seiran he admits he loves her, also he also sacrificed a lot for her and her dreams.. he threw away his freedom to be a worthy king that made the law for shuurei to achieved her dreams, he also didn’t spoil shuurei even if he wanted too, also he gave the chance for shuurei to shine and at the same time gave proof that she can govern even the sa province..
and for her dreams remember what ryuuki said at the end of the 1st season? that he will wait for shuurei until she felt satisfied from her achievements and wont accept to marry anyone unless it will be shuurei (ain’t that sweet)
soo i won’t accept anyone for shuurei unless it’s ryuuki, sorry for seiranxshuurei fans but hands off.
@prowse123: haha……. you are SO TOTALLY right. it is so true, and the seiran but the seiran and shuurei pairing i don’t think it would be that bad because seiran also sacrificed a lot for shuurei too. he protected her and he supported when she needed support. but since ryuuki is so much cuter and funnier. i side the shuureixryuuki pairing!

Shuurei has, however, unable to find him marriageable. Imagine your husband-to-be plays his horrid flute 24/7 just to chase away evil spirits + drive every living soul mental regardlessly with his own difficult opinions. She won’t have much of a scoial life with this guy around, and that’s a big no-no since she’s has a public persona as an official. But the biggest bonus to have Ryuuren by your side is he’s a very good scout with sharp, accurate intuition - very vital for governance purposes. Also, Ryuuren is a friend in need when you need him most for a shoulder to cry on or a lending hand to fight off enemies
This anime’s very long,i’d like to know the end of “Saiunkoku Monogatari” so much!!..and i hope Ryuuki&Shuurei’ll be together forever….

Kijin is really the one most suited to Shuurei’s personality type: workaholic, oblivious, and irresistible to the opposite sex. He could even protect Shuurei, since his bishie face supposedly causes everyone (including men) projectile nosebleeds when witnessing his divine beauty.
Both of them are great at scheduling, and would enjoy scheduling their conjugal visits. She will offer him her manju buns, he will take off his mask, she can go monkey love all over his bishie self, and then it is back to work work work like a good little couple of devoted public servants. LOL.
But seriously, I think that she will end up choosing Ryuuki. She would not have been able to achieve any of her hopes and dreams thus far if Ryuuki hadn’t facilitated the means for her to do so. It also seems logical since the political climate of Saiunkoku indicates that such a marriage would possibly derail the civil war within the clans.
