Going for Broke: Black Friday
The culmination of a whole 6 months of work. At least I am still in the black by a nice margin.
Black Friday is my favorite Friday of the whole year and for good reason, savings. I got a bunch of schwag at reasonable prices, though I will have to tighten my belt for a while…
I was really ticked off that lining up at Circuit City in the wee hours of the morning standing in line for over an hour after the doors had “opened” netted me nothing. The 52 inch Aquos was outside of my price range even after the 1000 USD discount. I had hoped that enough of the high dollar people would jump on that one instead of the 46 incher, but alas the 42 and 46 HDTVs sold faster than the bloody 52s. The Sharp Aquos LC-46D64Us for 1299.99 USD were all sold out within the first hour all over the region. Best Buy refused to match the price since Circuit City was out of stock, those lousy fuckers. Video Only cut me a deal for a LC-C4662U which was last year’s model for that price, at least they agreed to match it and cut 25 USD off from the 5 year warranty plan. Normally I would not have bothered with a warranty extension but since the LC-C4662U is being discontinued soon I’d rather be safe than sorry.
I probably should have waited for Super Mario Galaxy given how deep the discounts were this week, my only consolation is the pre-order coin… However being the long time Nintendo fan I will forgive them since the game is good. The same goes for Half Life 2 the Orange Box, but since Portal kicks ass I will forgive Valve as well. How I wish that every anime doormat was replaced by a weighted companion cube. At least I got Last Exile at a 50 USD discount, to make up for the cost. It sucks that I pre-ordered so much at Gamestop only to see Target under cut them.
I chose Mass Effect over Assassin’s Creed, since there seems to be a few AI issues. Also I’ll probably get it for the PS3 in 2010 and since Mass Effect is a 360 exclusive I can play it right now knowing that it was originally designed for it. Besides how could I say no to some hawt girl on alien yuri action?
46 inches is 46 inches. Hopefully I won’t be lamenting the loss of all USB ports, one HDMI port, and a VGA port. Then again under my 5 year plan if they break it or it breaks I get a newer model as a replacement, time to clock in that 60,000 hours…
I finally made the move to a DS Lite after a year, probably too short at time, but since Best Buy bundled in a starter pack and Brain Age 2 I don’t feel cheated. Perhaps my new DS Lite being Zelda themed would have something to do with it. Getting another copy of Phantom Hourglass at a significant discount helps as well, since I can give it away as a gift now. Hopefully the wall mount will work other wise I will have to get a bigger one at a much greater cost. Well I have to wait to see if my Dad can make it work. It didn’t work at least the wall mount was fairly cheap (only 20 bucks more), thank goodness Video Only opened late today.
While I am most happy that I got a TV on the “cheap” I feel a bit miffed that it does not have a DVI port or VGA port. I have to buy an adapter to make my PC connect through a HDMI port, but at least the adapter will be reasonably cheap even if the bloody HDMI cable costs an arm and a leg. I hope the price for the bloody things will go down by this time next year.
If only my Asakura Fig arrived the circle would have been complete...
Gaming wise I have more than enough to play for the rest of the year. I almost forgot that the Wii Zapper came out recently and while I would like to play some of these games, I need more disposable income. Well Capcom, Nintendo, Sega, and EA will have to wait for my gaming dollar, at least I know that these games are decent and out there. I was also tempted by FFXII Revenant Wings but the siren call of Contra 4 dragged me away, maybe next year. I bought the 2GB SD (14.99 USD) card to store some more Wii Virtual Console games, I am surprised that I still found some after the 6 hour had already broke. Hopefully SD cards will go down in price since there won’t be a Wii hard drive add-on any time soon.
My co-workers keep telling me to get Call of Duty 4, but I’d rather wait it out for a bit. If only PSN could force Microsoft to make LIVE free then I would do it sooner than later. As it stands I still need to justify a PS3 purchase, CoD 4 seems to be one part of that equation since it is supposedly the lead SKU.
I’ll probably give my old DS to my folks, who knows maybe they will play Brain Age 2. If not my brother will be using it to finish Pokemon Diamond.
I just paid for a 1/8 Asakura Ryoko figure though HLJ it should be arriving some time next week. I probably should cut back on the manga purchases for a while, well after I get up to volume 8 for Claymore of course… I’ll be working for a couple days more to see if I can make a bit of cash for the after Christmas sales. Thank Haruhi-sama I live in the US, having cheaper goods makes being gaijin all the more worth while.
So how was your Black Friday? Any good tales or were you one of the bastards that got a LC-46D64U? Or maybe your country men don’t have Black Friday, perhaps you should try and ask them to hold it next year…?

I didn’t get much since I value my sleep more than anything else… and even then, there wasn’t much that I was interested in that was in my price range anyways @_@.
I did manage to pick up Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater for $10 at a random Circuit City (regular price for them but I’ll take it anyways =p). I was hoping to get the Orange Box for cheap at Best Buy but sadly they were all gone way before I even found out about it.

And Best Buy has the original Last Exile boxset with figure for like 31.99 if you buy it from the kiosk and have it shipped. I dunno if you bought that for less because it’s a different boxset, looks different from mine.
I totally forgot that it was Black Friday. Most likely because I am not a big shopper. I either buy stuff off the Internet or leech, I mean, borrow stuff from my kind, thoughtful friends. ^_^;;

If you’re looking for HDMI cables, I would suggest monoprice.com. They have pretty much the cheapest prices around and was the place I went to when upgrading all my stuff 1/2 a year back.
BF for me wasn’t anything special, just picked up some clothes and a logitech harmony universal remote. Pretty much broke for the next few months so any “crazy” spending has to be put on hold for awhile ^^;;
Man, you had quite the day…I went to the mall, picked up a game. Though I dragged people with me so I didn’t have to do it alone. Don’t want to do it again unless I have more to buy though >

I am humbled by your mastery of finding tech equipment on the cheap. Thanks for the site I will look into getting the HDMI cable once I move back into my room. I might need to invest in a creiever down the road but at least with the HDMI cable I can use it in full 1080P for computer stuff.
Lastly, any tips on how to speed up recovery? It looks like I might need to put in some overtime for the post Christmas sales.

Mass Effect you say? That game has been consuming every available minute of my life for the past three days. Agreed on the atrocious AI, and the combat is more stressful than enjoyable. Why make a tactical shooter and give the player’s squad suicidally idiotic AI? Undermines the tactic element a little …
Overall, though, a pretty immersive, addictive experience. I hope they seriously fix the flaws in the next two instalments, because then it might become something truly excellent.

I reaaaaaaaaally want the Zelda DS Lite. But I’m going to wait til my birthday in February and maybe put my old DS in exchange for some money off. I’ve waited this long for Phantom Hourglass I can wait a bit longer.
But YAY we got Mario Galaxy. Hubby-sama has gotten further than I have, but since he’s addicted then if he’s on it, all I can really do is be his wingman.
And we got our hands on Assassin’s Creed. Hubby thought hard about that one. But apparently both the PS3 version and the 360 version have quirks unique to them. So figuring that balanced it out he ended up getting that.
We decided to hold on Naruto Rise of A Ninja and Naruto Clash of Ninja Revolution. We figure they can wait til they drop in price some. And I WILL get my hands on My Beautiful Katamari.
He got me InuYasha v40. Now my InuYasha anime collection is finally complete. FINALLY! Now if Takahashi would just finish the manga…
I want the Wii zapper for Link’s training game that comes with it. But have yet to actually see it anywhere.
Since his birthday was on the Sunday. I got him that Red Wings boxset he wanted and the special edition of Transformers that he wanted.
