As the story finally finished its introduction, it is slowly building up to a plot. The three of them experienced an out of body experience at Episode 4, and they are still wondering if the event happened. Ghost Hound is finally getting more interesting, with more character development and plot on the spiritual world.

What are those black beings that haunts the dream of Tarou?

The water in the dam submerged the hospital, as Tarou continued to think of the out of body experience and the ritual to cleanse them. Tarou informed his parents on the psychiatrist coming to their house. Nakajima wore a hat to cover it, while Makoto cut his hair short. Nakajima said he could not sleep due to the OBE experience, but Makoto said his spiritual medium background rendered the experience common. Nakajima suggested to go to Ogami’s house, but he said something wrong as he asked about Makoto’s mother. Makoto flared up and threatened to drop him down from the rooftop.

Back to their daily activities, Makoto was called to dinner and was informed that his grandmother wanted to talk to him. He went out, ignoring the words as he stood before the door that his father died. His grandmother appeared and reminded him to study. If not, Ogami should focus on the family business and he had no choice since it was his life as a member of the Ogami family. Makoto immediately opened the door of his father’s room and screamed to his grandmother that his father hated this family too. His grandmother was disgusted at his actions and screamed at him. Miyako observed an old man who entered the forest, but was interrupted by her father. Her father asked about the strange experiences (when she breathed heavily), but Miyako said that the frequencies were reducing.

In the school toilet, the three met each other again as Nakajima said it was fate. Tarou asked Makoto about any further OBE and the two of them said no. Tarou said he was still dreaming, and Makoto explained that OBE was unachievable except to those with some spiritual training. Tarou asked if OBE can be done with training, but Makoto said hell if he knew truly.

Makoto explained that the thing they saw was the spiritual world, where Makoto said it was the plane between reality and spirits. Tarou asked the psychiatrist about OBE, but he said that it was more of the trauma symptoms rather than the truth. The psychiatrist asked whether Tarou experienced as such, and the Monroe Institute dealt with this phenomenon before. It was due to the escapism of reality rather than an out of body experience. The brain reacted to give such a vision.

The psychiatrist met up with Tarou’s family and learnt about the fermenting of wine and that females were initially not allowed. The psychiatrist said that he traveled through Tokyo to help Tarou, but it’s apparent to him that his mother was suffering much more psychological pain. The psychiatrist saw Tarou waiting for him along the road, and Tarou asked if his mother’s problem was more serious. The psychiatrist said that he would try to help his family, and Tarou noted that his mother was already suffering before this. There were prank calls when they were kidnapped, and he did not know a single thing about it. His mother said that she took drugs to sleep, but she could not dream because of it and yet she strangely said that she wished to dream of her daughter. Tarou said the thing he was scared was the point when his mother would mentally break down.

Back at home, he was playing with frequencies on a machine, only to experience OBE again. Tarou found Nakajima and Makoto out of their bodies as they saw the realm of spirits and the black figures in his dreams. Miyako’s father was also talking to someone about Miyako’s spiritual effects while she was sleeping. He told him that it might be due to multiple personalities, and Miyako was breathing hard as she could feel the three getting close to the spiritual place.

Tarou said he saw spirits just now, and Makoto said it was not surprising since it was the spiritual world. Nakajima explained he was not scared, and they found that the spirits previously disappeared. A bat-like spirit hovered and stared at them, flying toward them as though to attack them. However, it flew away without disturbing them as the three were scared. They lowered down to the forest, and Makoto said he saw the creature from a book. Nakajima said he was tired, even though his body was not physically tired. The black giant appeared, scaring Tarou as Makoto warned them to be quiet.

Tarou asked if the two could see them, and he said that he seemed to have the dreams of these black beings inside. Nakajima asked if it was about the kidnapping and referred to the kidnapper as Makoto stared at him. Makoto, visibly annoyed, flew off. As the old man earlier came and looked above, it seemed that he could see them as he laughed without humor, calling them just little children.

Thoughts

I do not know why but the little bodies just turns me off every single time it appears. It really spoils the viewing experience of an otherwise slow starting series that is showing its goodness. I personally do not know why, but people who read the blog knows that I have been irritated about the OBE appearance since the first time it appeared in Episode 4.

Nevertheless, the biggest question is about the realm between the living and the dead. It is clear that the three are definitely not having post-trauma symptoms, but how did they really have that ability to move out of their bodies. My feeling is that their close experience with the other world caused a change in their bodies, and the very fact that they have a trauma creates a huge unstable psyche that allows the separation of the mind from the body. The static vibrations might also possibly led to such a situation.

In terms of Miyako’s trances, it is clear in this episode that it is common of her to experience such incidents. Her father, despite being trained spiritually, clearly does not believe in spiritual explanations as he described Miyako’s behavior as a form of split personalities. I do wonder if she will truly be fully involved in this experience felt by the three guys, or that she actually has some form of post trauma that resulted in her being able to sense the feel of spirits and the supernatural.

Lastly, I like to add that I do wonder sometimes how the story will progress, but it seems that with the OBE, it will talk about the change in the spiritual world, and the journey of the three. I actually want to know who the true murderer behind this kidnapping is, and whether how exactly it is linked to the spiritual world. It is clear that the rumors of the boy who disappeared might be true, if Makoto’s words that the hospital is the gate of spirits …is true.

I agree with you about those OBE’s, they’re really jarring compared to the rest of the scenes.

@rambler: glad that I am not the only person who feels that way. I have been thinking what in the world possessed them to make them this way. Anyway, the show is at least getting confusing (which is always good for such types of supernatural series).

After watching each episode, I almost always completely confused about what’s happening but I still watch it anyway… I’m drawn to the story for some reason.

I agree as well with the OBEs, it’s really weird and seems out of place. The first thing that popped in my head when I first saw them in ep 4 was the oompa-loompa from the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. =D

@Hazy: Ya, ghost hound does have that really strange draw in which you get immensely confused, and yet you still want to watch it. However, I have a feeling that we are perhaps in the minority.

In a way, I cannot even try to relate it to anything. Nevertheless, I do wonder whether they can be affected by humans in that state, especially those of a spiritual inclination. I do wonder as well, who the old man was, since it is not normal for someone to be able to see those mirages.

Is he merely a bystander or perhaps sensing the change in the gates of the underworld or spiritual world?

The surrealism is taken away by the solid imagery the OBE bodies, thus ruining much of the mysterious pseudorealistic atmosphere.

The faces seem too precise and human (as far as showing emotion goes).

@korosora: I do agree that the surrealism is somewhat unbalanced with the strong solid OBE bodies. In my opinion, they could have made it in a way that you do not even see the bodies, somewhat like a first person view of things to make it a bit more artsy and less jarring compared to the rest of the scenes.

That said, I do have some questions looming in my head about the old man and the likes.

In the OP there is a scene where Tarou is flying and his body is transparent, but otherwise normal, so maybe as they learn more about the unseen world how they appear in it will change? I hope so.

@Impz: I’m curious with the old man as well, and he seems a bit suspicious too. Since Miyako saw him a bit earlier on his way up, I thought he might be onto something with regard to the unseen world. Perhaps he will play a bigger role in later episodes.

I wonder what exactly the black giant is and that werid bat-like creature. It probably means something since Tarou has memory of the giant and Makoto mentions he’s read about the bat thingy before. Maybe both are related to the incident years ago.

@Gez: hmm, I guess it is perhaps that they are merely on the surface of this spiritual world. However, I do not think that their appearance might change at all. Nevertheless, I will gladly accept any change to the image rather than that queer chibi OBE body.

@Hazy: My belief is that he is perhaps a roaming spiritual priest that probably wanted to tap into the spiritual presence in the area. He does not seem to be malicious currently, since he says it without any emotions at all. My far-fetch speculation is that he might be the one that will eventually trigger the entrance of the spiritual world into the real world.

…hmm, the spiritual beings stumbled me quite a bit.
