As the clock continues to move unfavorably, Shuurei only has half a month left to secure her official status. However, she has been kept busy for the past few days trying to help the other reserve officials. It was vintage Shuurei, trying to help everyone but herself as she finally solved one of the issues at hand. However, she does need to find a way for herself. Moreover, the salt issue was perplexing, showing a huge resemblance to the previous forgery case. Who is the mastermind behind this?

The episode seems to be the curtain raiser for the answer…

Episode summary

saimono25-1.jpg

There was half a month left, with Shuurei completely exhausted. She said sarcastically that someone came to boast and Suou Shin asked about her situation. Shuurei said Suou Shin was going to say she was naive, but Suou Shin added that he admired her resilience despite pushing her own things last. Suou Shin said that she did not give up, and asked her to play the er hu. Shuurei started to play. At the archives, Ryuuki was talking to Riou about his love, and Riou said that it was impossible and told him to give up. Ryuuki said that Riou was mean to stop him before anything was said, and Riou said that he could get that woman to the palace easily.

As the music of the er hu played, Riou realized the person Ryuuki loved was Shuurei and said it was going to be difficult. Ryuuki asked why, but Riou said that a woman’s secret cannot be revealed. Ryuuki mentioned that the “spirit-san” was extremely sharp, and said that there were rumors of a spirit lingering around. As Riou was smart and knowledgeable, having the same name as Riou made it possible that young Riou was the ancestor of the Hyou clan. Riou asked if a live person could eat and drink, and said that he was old Riou’s son. Riou said that his father was 80 years old. Ryuuki was shocked and asked Riou why he came. Riou said Ryuuki would know soon enough.

Suou Shin thanked her for the music, and said there was nothing when Shuurei asked about her strange behavior. As Shuurei thought about her status, she was wondering whether to find an easy path. She said that it was no time to fool around as getting her official status was more important. Kouki said she only knew how to talk, but chose the easy way out. Kouki said that was her low standard and left Shuurei confused while she lied on her bed. The next day, Shuurei was cooking and realized that the salt was of low quality. It seemed that Seiran did not come home since yesterday even though it was a public holiday today.

Shuurei realized that the price of salt was rising, and quality was dropping. However, an apparatus helped to get rid of the coarse texture. It seemed that someone added some other material into the salt, and Shuurei said it was a huge issue as salt was essential for survival. Suou Shin said that the expert (Sai Rin) and the investigative department should know. Shuurei asked if they did not know, but Suou Shin reminded her of finding out how to save herself. Shuurei said she could redeem herself by solving this. Suou Shin did not say anything sarcastic, but said that it’s her choice. He did point out that it was similar to the forgery. At the palace, Youshun said it was definitely done by the same person, and salt was a commodity that could earn a lot. Ryuuki wanted to intervene, but Youshun said that it was not time for him to. Youshun also warned that the salt situation was part of a larger controversy.

saimono25-2.jpg

At the streets, Shuurei and Suou Shin met up with Seiga, and Shuurei was about to tell Seiga about the investigation. Suou Shin tried to stop her but Seiga said he was free. Seiga said it might be problematic since the addition of materials was probably outside the capital. Seiga was also worried for Shuurei’s attempt to regain her official status. However, Seiga realized it was impossible to stop Shuurei, and said that it was logical to ask Youshun and Sai Rin on this. Seiga offered to travel along to meet Sai Rin, who was also the one who created the salt filtering device. Sai Rin knew Shuurei came about the salt and Shuurei realized Youshun also knew it.

Shuurei asked if she could help at all, and would not ask anything if she was of no help. Shuurei said she would work on something and concentrate on it fully in order to complete it. Sai Rin mentioned that Shuurei has luck, fate and human relations at her side. It was not something everyone could be, and her ability to draw people to help her was a sign of her honesty and just behavior. There were many people who wanted to help her. Suou Shin asked if Shuurei’s help was dispensable not regarding speed, and Sai Rin said that the issue could be solved eventually without Shuurei. However, it was left to Shuurei to see if she wanted to, and obviously she agreed to help.

Shuurei went to meet Shuuei, and asked Shuuei to check on salt as the Ran clan’s main merchandise was salt. Shuurei wanted Shuuei to check whether anyone was given the authority over the dealing of salt, and Shuuei agreed. He also gave some peaches to Shuurei. Shuurei went to the archives and prepared some food for Ryuuki. Riou went to hide to give the two some alone time, but Ryuuki called Riou over. Shuurei was surprised on Riou’s appearance, but Riou said he could not tell her anything now. Ryuuki proudly said he did not know anything. Ryuuki realized that his favorite peaches were brought by Shuuei too as he said Shuuei was extremely gentle. Seiga and Shuurei were investigating on the salt event.

Shuurei apologized on imposing Seiga, and Seiga pointed out that the salt mostly traveled through the Jin area. Hakumei arrived and he was surprised how Seiga was a reserve official as he was from a noble clan. Hakumei was angry that Shuurei was investigating something instead of trying to save her own neck. Hakumei said Shuurei probably found a way to solve her issue, and Shuurei said possibly. Hakumei flared up and eventually told her that she was ranked higher than her and was required to stay as an official. Hakumei added that he knew Shuurei had her own way of working, and left her to her own. Shuurei also realized that Suou Shin’s father died a day before the public holiday as Shuurei realized Suou Shin’s strange behavior.

Thoughts

saimono25-3.jpg

Before I go on, I must say that the preview is really the most exciting part of this episode. When Shuurei mouthed out, “Who are you, Seiga”, it makes you start to wonder who this Seiga is. Is he perhaps the spy that is giving all the reports to the investigative department. Saiunkoku Monogatari usually plants a person that is somewhat obvious, yet not devious as spies most of the time, which means that it is very likely that Seiga is a double sided person that works for Shuurei to observe her behavior (enough in order to know that she’s naive in her working style) and reports back to the big boss, Kouki.

One of the most interesting scenes for me in this episode is when Ryuuki really thought that young Riou was a spirit that lingered around the archives. I mean, he is simply sharing his thoughts to a random spirit due to the fact that he cannot tell anyone. I do wonder what Riou’s instructions are as he comes into the palace. It must be for something important, and perhaps a layout for the future arc involving old Riou. However, the thing that old Riou is actually 80 years old just stumbles me. I mean, looking so good (Ryuuki said it too) and being so old bishie is just not fair for the poor people like me! Riou’s comment that old Riou will enjoy a rub on the shoulders is the icing on the cake.

Kouki’s appearance to Shuurei is perplexing and somewhat serene. He just appears to diss Shuurei and then disappeared just as abruptly. I think that he is perhaps not the mastermind behind this at all, but he hates the innocence of Shuurei. That is how I feel because he has this huge disdain in his face that says that he hates Shuurei’s world view of black and white, without a shade of grey. His comment of “so this is your level of standard” seems to be queer though. What is wrong with securing a job that is easy to get?

The thing about Suou Shin’s father dying was not really a surprise considering how his father was visited by “someone”. I think that someone wanted to silence his father from talking too much, and that is perhaps someone sent by the mastermind. I am surprised by Suou Shin’s complete composure at such events though, and he is clearly showing a huge amount of maturity that is somewhat expected from this man. Nevertheless, Shuurei must be shocked that such a thing happened. I wonder what Seiran is doing for the past few days for Suou Shin too. Hmmm.

So, let me pose some questions.

1. What is the purpose of Riou now? (evil novel people need not apply :P)
2. Who do you think is behind this?

Have fun!

As an evil novel person I can answer neither question. ^_^;

But I will reiterate how hot I think Kouki is, and I especially love this, albeit short, little scene. Just another example of Kouki’s complexity as a character. ^_^

Looks like next week will be the climax of Shuurei’s “job search” arc, then we get into the really good stuff of the novel. Yay!

Oh, and it’s “Yuushun” not “Youshun.”

Thanks for the update!

I don’t think TanTan’s father is dead. I bet that is what Tantan asked Serian for help on and why Serian didn’t come home. As for Seiga, I think he is out to hurt Shurrie’s career so that she can’t get back into politics. She should listen more to Tantan.

Oh my… This episode is not as interesting as the other episodes I’ve watched. Well, to put it short this episode is dull. (As always, the (plot of the) first few episodes of a new complex problem arises is slow!) But I think that the next episode would be great!

Wait a second, there’s no comedic moments other than when Ryuuki was talking to young Riou! The second season has surely gave me an impression that the overall plot is most probably a dark one..

Also, Rin and Yuushun is a great team working together! :) Oh, no Kouyuu appearing in this episode!!! Nevertheless, I’m glad Shuuei appeared briefly.. Shuurei still has time to cook for Ryuuki?! Though it’s good for her to get her mind of things for a while.

And where is Seiran anyway? I have a theory here:

Suou Shin must’ve asked Seiran to do some investigating as well. I’ve got a feeling that Seiran is coming back from the investigation in the next episode… (Fingers crossed xD)

Now, answers to your questions….

1. I’m not exactlly certain what his plans are… But I think he is planning to kidnap Shuurei and bring her to the Hyo clan’s side then kill her father (But Shoka is after all the legendary “Black Wolf”) The Hyo clan is determined to bring down the Kou clan because of Shoka married Shokun (Remember that Shusui is also part of “Wolves of the Wind”)

2. Well, this question is actually connected to the first one. I can’t tell who is the person is. Once again, here are my theories:

Okay, lets just call the person behind all this “X”.

* Yuushun said that it is the same person who did the forgery of famous paintings. Then, “X” must be good in medicine (”X” must’ve mixed some unindentified material) or construction of castles (the unidentified material would be some sort of powder)
* Someone in Sa Province must be “X”’s accomplices. (”X” probably has many connections to ask people to assist him in his/her plan.)
* One of “X”’s connections must be working in the Ran clan, if not, it wouldn’t have affected the salt (in Sa Province). Other provinces should be experiencing the same problem now.

Sorry for the long post! *bows*

Thanks for the summary Impz-san,
Minako

Couple changes from the novel in this episode that I’m miffed about:

Suou was supposed to ask Shuurei to play a specific piece, a sickeningly sweet love song called “Suou”, which he’s named after.

Shuurei was supposed to hear Kouki playing the flute before he confronted her, and he was playing “Suou” like she was, but unlike her version it wasn’t sweet, but had an ice beauty.

Little details like this that get passed over annoy me. >.

L-chan, yeah… I don’t know why they strayed so much from the manga. It will be interresting to see how they end it, since they are so close to where the manga is now. :) But I enjoy both just as is. I’m hoping for the ending I want from the manga (Serian/Shurrie), but expecting it to be Ryuukie/Shurrie in the anime. But the way anime goes (as well as the manga) she won’t end up with anyone because she’ll turn out to be an immortal (thanks to her mother trading places with her).

Ok…I might not get any answers, but im gonna ask anyway…..where do you guys get the manga of Saimono? I was able to download up to issue #8….are there more and if so…are there downloads available? Please, please, please let me know… :( I’ll love you forever :) hahahaha!

malwethien added these pithy words on Nov 04 07 at 6:11 pm

ooh, the manga… i was wondering if there are scanlations available. :D i managed to find only until vol 2 chapter 8… i wonder if there are others.

now, re this episode… ryuuki, no matter how much he has been trying to grow up, could still end up being really stupid thinking the kid is a ghost or a spirit of the hyou clan.

there was a proposal in the court regarding the regulation of the prices of salt, right? the same person who proposed it may have something to do with this salt adulteration bit. this arc is the shuurei’s story growing up to become a government official fit enough to survive. she still has so much to learn, though. she may hate seiga’s guts, but she admires him for not wasting time entertaining petty things, tantan may look stupid, but he gets things done and he has a very sharp perception of the situation and the people around him…

but whether it be novels, manga or anime, it seems very clear that there is a part of shuurei’s personality that has not yet been realized and it brings me back to asking what would the hyou clan’s role be to get this done. riou jr’s purpose will be exposed in the next episode, i think, but i am more interested in what riou sr would do to get his bara-hime back.

I’m hardly the expert, but here goes… The anime is actually following the novels, which are up to #12 now. There are also manga that is currently trailing pretty far behind at only 2 volumes so far.

This info is available at Wikipedia which seems to be kept pretty up-to-date. Hope this helps… Please correct me if I’m waaay off here! x__x;

Alida added these pithy words on Nov 04 07 at 10:38 pm

Thanks Alida…I also heard about that. I really want to read the translated novels….so far I haven’t been able to find any. (sigh) I wonder if there are any available. I hate just relying on the anime….

malwethien added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 1:28 am

Malwethien if you can read Chinese you can find the novels in the bookstore or even out there …….

I don’t think there is novel translation in English at least not yet.

rooie added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 7:28 am

Malwethien, on Wikipedia site it has a list of libraries that carry the novels. The list is broken down by country and if you are in the US, it is broken by states. Just click on the “Volume” listings of the novels.

sandie0795 added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 9:00 am

@sandie0795: Although Wikipedia has the function, be aware that if any US local library would carry it (though possible, not likely that it would be imported), they will be in the original Japanese since no US company has licensed it for release in English.

Malwethien wanted to read them translated, and even in fan releases, no group has undertaken the project. However, Shadow’s Random Fandom’s blog has many insights on the novels, and Shadow-sama has graciously translated some key chapters for those interested.

spring_rain added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 7:04 pm

Hey thanks for the info guys!! :) Unfortunately I can’t read Chinese…or Japanese… (sigh).

malwethien added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 8:27 pm

Hi there…

we talking about the novels being translated or the manga? sorry, am at a loss here. :D The manga has been taken on by Vampire Knights, right? but, yes, there seems to be none doing the novels. There are blogs for the novel summaries, though. Charmian’s blog is one. IMPZ the greenomaniac labels all spoilers as evil and all saimono novel reading people just as evil, hahaha. :D

but hey, there are details in which you would be able to compare if you know what happened in the three systems of story-telling. :P

There is an arc coming up that would be really exciting and I can’t wait for it to be shown in the anime. I just hope that they show it the way the novel tells it. The anime is more than halfway through, they say there will be the same number of episodes as the 1st series. Anticipating the end drives me nuts.

This episode basically laid the foundation for the next plot. Shuurei becoming a better government official. Can’t wait for the next episode to dish out more of my questions and blabbering :D

KaeBoo added these pithy words on Nov 05 07 at 9:18 pm

The last manga translated by VK (I think) was chapter 8.
Chapter 9 is also out (translated) but again it’s in Chinese.

I am currently reading book 3 (in Chinese) takes me a while to read it since it’s in traditional Chinese and some of the names totally confuse me.
If you go to LJ you will read that some peoples are trying to translate the Chinese novel to English (hopefully they will have them out soon :).

I love the anime but the novel give you more details on some things. I have not read book 4-onwards so I can not be considered as the evil novel people :).

rooie added these pithy words on Nov 06 07 at 7:53 am

Kaeboo…yeah i wanted to know about the manga and the novels. I’m not used to relying on just the anime…i usually read mangas first..then watch the anime..but obviously Saimono is different because it is not originally a manga. But yeah I already downloaded up to vol. 8 of the manga.

Rooie: how about trying to translate your chinese novels in English? :D

The suspense is killing me!!! I wanna know what happens already!

I really want to see Ryuuki grow up a little…I really like him, but I think he needs to be a little ‘tougher.’ ;)

malwethien added these pithy words on Nov 06 07 at 6:20 pm

@L-chan: hahaha, i realized that only after writing it. I will correct it next time. I have been so busy lately.

@Heather: I hope not but the rumors seem to fit the strange behavior of Tantan. I don’t think that Seiga is trying to outwardly hurt Shuurei but is brutually honest to realize that Shuurei at this current condition is not fitted to be a true blue politican as yet.

@Minako: My feel is that Seiran is trying to dig out the facts about the death of Tantan’s father, whether it’s true or not. I think that it’s rather amusing nevertheless on how Riou is 80 years old and still looking way younger than Shouka. I am queer, yes. Please go on with the long post because it gives me more things to talk about too.

Well, whoever is good at this is possibly someone up there in the ranks, since he has a lot of special control. Nevertheless, I wonder who the person is, and it looks likely to be revealed. If anything, i am sure that Kouki is hunting that person down, or is he behind the conspiracy @_@

*hides from all the evil novel spoilers :P
