Now that Ghost Hound OP is known, we can make the top 12 Openings of the 2007 Autumn season (or Fall, like you Americans call it….)
I’ve got to confess, this was originaly supposed to be a Top 5, but the amount of good songs made me stretch it to Top 12.
12. Dragonaut: The Resonance - [perfect blue] by [ATSUMI]
This was the easiest one to rank: perfect blue is a mellow sog with a good tune but it doesn’t quite match with the animation, which made it plummet down the rank.
11. Genshiken 2 - [disarm dreamer] by [Aki Misato]
The first time I saw the OP i thought “Wait……Gundam???”, but then I noticed the pilot didn’t looked emo.
10. Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun - [Yubikiri] by [Mai Kadowaki & Miyuki Sawashiro]
The Euro-Beat tune sang by the seiyuu Mai Kadowaki and Miyuki Sawashiro really matches well with the light humour tone of the anime.
9. Shugo Chara! - [Kokoro no Tamago] by [Buono!]
Buono!, the pop group singing this OP was made specifically for this role by Hello! Project, a japanese idol female singers conglomeration, and the first work was Kokoro no Tamago. Maybe this OP should be ranked a bit lower, but I got to admit, I am partial when it comes to chibi girls who say Yosh!, Boku and Desu.
8. You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle - [Mighty Buddy] by [AA-CHINO]
I couldn’t find much info about AA-CHINO, only that it seems to be a recent group and the single is often misspelled as Meaty Body…Anyway that doesn’t affect the fact that the song is energetic and has some of the feeling from the past YuA OP’s. But I got to admit, my favourite OP it’s still [Boku de Arutameni] by [To Be Myself], the second OP from the 1st anime serie.
7. Rental Magica - [Sora ni Saku] by [Lisa Komine]
This is a good example of coordination: the whole song matches the anime sequence with a milimetric precision, and goes along with the flow of the action. But in spite of that, it suffers from the lack of charisma the characters have, lowering his rank some places down.
6. Shion no Ou - [LADY LOVE] by [RIZE]
RIZE (which you many know from performing in the japanese part of Live Earth) bring us what they can do best: a J-Rock song full of attitude and power. And the main character is a voiceless girl with short hair? ( Yeah, Im moe over short hair girls…)
5. Moyashimon - [Curriculum] by [Sarasa Ifu]
I’m not much into light pop songs, but this song by the rookie singer Sarasa Ifu growed on me. And the fact that the 3d animated bacteria and fungi are so fluffy and bright that you want to hug them is another reason for liking it even more.
4. Ghost Hound - [Poltergeist] by [Mayumi Kojima]
This is what made me hold the post until it came out and I didn’t regret waiting for it. The pop jazz tune has a great vibe and Mayumi Kojima’s voice really adds up to it. And jazz songs are a soft spot for me since Lupin the 3rd and Cowboy Bebop
3. Shakugan no Shana II - [JOINT] by [Mami Kawada]
If I didn’t added this OP, the rabid fans of Shana would kill me…but fortunely, Im a Shana fan too. But the OP is great even without my biased opinion. The rock song is great, the 3d animation is one of the best I’ve seen so far, the fact that it’s on HD and has Shana on a red dress with a hair ribbon…
2. ef - a tale of memories - [euphoric field] by [Tenmon feat. ELISA]
If you saw ef before, the 1st thing you notice is it’s orthodox style and that’s present to in the OP. The powerful song blends perfectly in the stylized sequence.
1. Gundam 00 - [DayBreak’s Bell] by [L’Arc~En~Ciel]
This will probably be polemic, since this OP has received quite a bit of negativism around it. Mind you I’m a huge Gundam hater since Gundam Wing, which traumatized me in my tender years ( my Gundam Wing manga is serving me as a teacup holder..) But one of the reasons that made me shift my opinion was exactly this OP. L’Arc~En~Ciel brought us a song who grows on you; you may not like it the 1st times but after the 2nd listening you won’t be able to say it’s not godly. Another thing that helps is it’s the first time that a Gundam anime is on HQ, so the animation is excellent. Lastly, the characters have charisma, so you like them at first sight (except Tieria Erde, but I bet that 1) He’s just there to please the female viewers; 2nd) He’s a Trap.)

[…] other than one of the best OP’s this season, the episode premise starts off as the Genshiken approaches the deadline for printing their doujin, […]
Genshiken 2 02 » Jii~ a lovely stare. added these pithy words on Oct 22 07 at 7:05 pmlol as i was looking down ur list i kept wondering wat was ur top op and when i found out it was gundam 00 i was like: “oh that’s it?”
and where’s clannad? KEYANI FANS ATTACK!!!
well honestly clannad’s OP wasn’t that memorable as Air’s or Kanon’s…but the style is so like Air’s that it’s worth mentioning at least…AND IT HAS ICHINOSE KOTOMI PLAYING THE VIOLIN!!! AHHHH~~~~~
Xak added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 6:22 pm@Xak: I knew Clannad would bite me in my behind… The op song is nice and all but I’m not easily sold by sad girls in snow. The OP feels way too much as a V-novel intro ( which is funny since this is a adaptation of a Key V-novel.) It’s just that they could do way better with the OP…
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 6:31 pmwell i see ur point…but for me that’s what made it nice ![]()
must be the nostalgia…
and there aren’t sad girls in the snow this time…but there’s KOTOMI!!!
Xak added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 6:38 pm//I knew Clannad would bite me in my behind… The op song is nice and all but I’m not easily sold by sad girls in snow.//
FYI Clannad doesn’t actually take place in winter, and what does ‘not being easily sold by sad girls in snow’ have anything to do with how good the OP is, if the op is nice, it is nice, no buts imo.
//The OP feels way too much as a V-novel intro ( which is funny since this is a adaptation of a Key V-novel.//
FYI That’s because it is the intro in the Clannad game.
mikemil828 added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 6:48 pm@mikemil828: “sad girl in snow” isn’t to be taken literal. It’s related to girls with emotional issues or girls in poses that look that way (Piro from Megatokyo is the one responsible for that reference). So, what I meant is I’m not easily biased by OP’s which exploits the “girls with issues” themes. Yeah, the OP song is nice but doesn’t particulary distinguish itself from others.
If the producers are just reusing the V-novel OP, it’s even worse. That only shows a lack of effort to improve it. If you compare it with ef, they did a great job doing a new OP instead of going the easy way. Yeah, I didn’t played Clannad, does that makes me less worthy of evaluating the anime OP?
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:09 pmahhh…i see wat u mean now…well i liked kanon’s op and air’s anyway…but have to agree that clannad’s doesn’t stick in my mind as much as those…
Xak added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:16 pmI love Mokke’s OP. I think it is the best of this season, but it isn’t in your list…
Vangui added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:20 pm@Vangui: Unfortunely, someone had to be left out of the top and another thing is, in spite of all the impartiality, in the end it’s going to depend on who’s making the rankings. Mokke’s OP song sticks in, that’s true, but the anime sequence is a bit average and only the part were they are hugging the tree is memorable.
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:29 pm//If the producers are just reusing the V-novel OP, it’s even worse. That only shows a lack of effort to improve it. If you compare it with ef, they did a great job doing a new OP instead of going the easy way.//
Depends on the viewpoint, I see it as merely being consistent, Kyoani has always used the same OP and ED in their Key shows and there was really never a desire from Key fans for them to do so.
As for ef I kinda wish they did go with the game op, as it’s even better than the one they came up with, if only for it lacking mangled english.
mikemil828 added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:35 pmI also think Mokke is the best, music wise.
maglor added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:49 pmwell i’m a shaft fan so watever is done for ef i like :3
but this season is pretty meh music wise for me…only 2 songs really struck my attention…Clannad ED and Shana 2nd ED
Xak added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 7:59 pmhmm i will agree with actually…
all of your picks.
wow. your OP/song preferences match mine.
we should have sex. totally.
korosora added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 9:50 pmThanks for this. There are a lot of good OPs this season. But the fact that Blue Drop’s isn’t even here is a huge omission. I’d probably rank it in the top three.
hashihime added these pithy words on Oct 19 07 at 10:02 pmhahahahahaha! Meaty Body? LOL! hmmmm…. boku de aru tame ni is your fave? Wow, mine’s Love Somebody. =P
I really couldn’t imagine that YUA was brought back to TV again to have a 3rd season. I miss the old days when I 1st it for the 1st time 9 years ago. AXN was at its prime back then. =D
oh yeah, of course #1 on this chart was Gundam oo’s Daybreak’s Bell. Hell yeah! Its the best! Laruku rules!!! =D
rollchan added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 12:44 amThe Gundam 00 OP is very medicore and just blah. It doesn’t have any feelings to it and I disagree the characters are good as well… I’m also a Gundam fan. I think Moyashimon deserves number 1 by far. No Clannad? I hate KeyAIDs and the OP is still pretty good. Nice song.
anne added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 1:20 am@hashihime: yep, Blue Brop’s OP and ED Theme should at least be here. For me, the OP theme, I’ll place it at number 2. Hehe. But, I do have to give credit on that place ef-. =D
rollchan added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 3:44 am@Hashimime, Rollchan and TheBigN: Blue Drop Op didn’t grabbed grabbed my attention enough in my case, but like I’ve said before, it all depends on tastes. One thing I’ve noticed is all those “rejected” songs are too calm for my kind.
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 7:15 am@Extrange: awwww… alright… =D
rollchan added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 10:04 amI agree with most of it… though i’m surprised the Myself/Yourself open didnt find its way into the bottom. They actually bothered with a lot of OP animation - and it really does capture the show pretty well (though if they go all NICE BOAT on me in this one i’m gonna be pissed)
Quint added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 1:28 pm@Quint: If you watched the M:Y episodes with a close eye, you will notice that there is a bloody NICE BOAT moment there…I almost choked to death with it…
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 20 07 at 2:15 pmActually, I have Clannad, Ef, M;Y op at first places in my top. Clannad op song is superb, perfect animation and overall feeling of visual novel, great
I’m pretty disappointed with Ghost Hound op, cowboy bebop op was stylish but this is not. What with those lame looking ghosts, and music don’t much anime at all…
@Extrange: NICE BOAT!!!! NICE BOAT!!!!
haha, I think Sana wanted to commit suicide before. He was hiding it by wearing a watch on his left wrist.
NICE BOAT!!!
@rollchan: Yeah, it’s definitetly a scar under that watch but I don’t think it’s suicide. He was in panic when he saw the knife….
Extrange added these pithy words on Oct 21 07 at 3:46 am@Extrange: hmmm… you got a point there. ehehe.
rollchan added these pithy words on Oct 21 07 at 4:50 amgreat post! i’ll be listening all of these
Jamaipanese added these pithy words on Oct 21 07 at 6:29 pmWhat, no Aozora Loop?
We’re now sworn enemies.
Lupus added these pithy words on Oct 28 07 at 7:55 amYeah, where is Aozora Loop? For sure one of the best op’s this Autumn. I was scrolling down one by one to see where it hit on your list only to find out it’s not there. D:
Faust721 added these pithy words on Oct 29 07 at 5:51 pmNice list. But where’s Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (*wailing)???
CatzCradle added these pithy words on Nov 10 07 at 2:05 am@CatzCradle: Simple, it’s not this season.
