THAT Fall Review: 1st episode of Suteki Tantei Labyrinth

Suteki Tantei Labyrinth is admittedly one of the shows that I did not mention at all in my review in a positive light, since there is little information about this at all. I must say that watching it speaks way louder than words, and I think I am decently pleasant with the show. This show is a detective show, about an extremely talented young teenager who is able to solve various mysteries in the town after his homeland is ravaged by an earthquake a few years ago.

Nevertheless, he remained in his house with his house attendants.

Episode summary

Mayuki, a young blond boy, got off the phone with a detective. He explained how his town was ruined due to an earthquake but stayed on as he loved this place with its memories. At school, Ryusuke, the detective and his partner were investigating a case where the people were dead by a “mystery” as none of the bullets that were shot at the victims did hit them. His partner was extremely interested in Mayuki, and Ryosuke found the location of the mystery caller after tracking it down.

In school, three kids were curious about the mansion that was rumored to be haunted. They eventually made their way in but a scream within the house left them in tatters as they thought that there is indeed a ghost. The detectives, after talking to Seiran, an attendant in the house, was suspicious of the attendant as the culprit. They believed that only the culprit had so many details to set others up. In another room, Byakko, a scantily dressed woman was fighting against Seiran’s dolls and she asked for the secret to the way of life.

Eventually, she escaped. As the three kids continued to walk, the girl stepped on something soft and thought she came into contact with a ghost and ran off. At the end, the elder twin said that it was a dog and he did not tell them because he was not good at talking to dogs (-_-). The two detectives finally met the children, only to realize that the children were not attacked by Seiran.

The misunderstandings are finally solved by a shining Mayuki when he showed Hatsumi’s scream, the dog and told that there is no haunting here. Eventually, the detectives asked for Mayuki’s help and wondered how he knew it. He said that he just does from his sixth sense.

Thoughts

This definitely screams out as one of the series that has impressed me greatly in this fall season. The other mystery (that monster thingy I reviewed earlier) series turned out to be a pseudo-mystery humor piece and I have to be honest to say that I am greatly disappointed. This one, however, has enough mystery elements to do well, with Mayumi being a rather enigmatic entity. There are enough questions raised in the episode for this to do well.

In addition, Seiran’s fight with this Byakko intrigues me, especially with the request of the secret to the path of life. I am wondering who Seiran is, considering that he is firstly an attendant of the rather mysterious Mayumi (with clear supernatural powers) and he can even order dolls around. This is definitely something that is waiting to reveal, and I am impressed that they actually throw some red herring like details in.

The mystery in itself, the case of the victims getting killed even though no bullets hit their body, is bloody interesting. I do wish that they will follow up on it, rather than jumping into some school comedy series that seem to be the second episode. Nevertheless, the maid also looks rather cute, and she is the ditsy blond prototype that I do not mind. Blond, of course, as a figurative notion rather than her hair color.

The graphics for this series is consistent. There is nothing really great but there is nothing shabby. If you want a detective show with some promise, watch this and give it a chance at least.

Cheers!

the first episode was quite different from the manga version (first few chapters)
nevertheless i find it quite interesting
though they didn’t seem to start on any cases yet( i hope its a yet)
since the next episode is about the twins it seems?

@Neko79: Arr, so it is quite different from the manga. Nevertheless, it seems like the current episode is more of an introduction to the series, rather than anything to do with a case as yet. I do find the initial case to be rather interesting, and they got to hop on to it as well.

I am not too sure what the next episode is about, but ya, it seems to be about the twins. In a way, the twins are rather interesting since they are really different from each other. There is no attempt to confuse the two other than appearance sense, since they are so characteristically parallel. that is better than the classic “so which one am I”. that can be annoying.

This show does sound some promise. I cannot wait to watch more.
