… in Briar’s book.

This picture is here for no better reason than that Fushigi Yugi is one of the best known animes filled with bishounens in the 90s.
A couple months back, when I first joined THAT, Impz asked me if I wanted to do an editorial on bishounens. I was interested, seeing as how bishounens is probably one of my main attractions to animes.
But then after I thought about it for some time, I realized that I couldn’t really identify a particular element. Well, other than the fact that I like eye candy and that I’m shallow.
So. No serious editorial on why bishounens are so popular. Instead, I will go an utterly biased and subjective route and list out my Top Ten Bishounens (in my opinion), and see if there’s some kind of pattern in the stuff that I like. And hopefully, from those patterns I would be able to see what makes bishounens so popular.
So that’s the jumping board of this post. But my main purpose isn’t to do some serious analysis on bishounens. My main purpose is simply to add some neon pink feministic elements (figuratively speaking… to be honest, I dislike pink as a color) to this lamentably male blog… in fact, the lamentably male blogger world.
Even if it’s probably just a single drop of tiny pink.
Hopefully there would be other spots of pink. Who knows, we may take over the world in an overwhelming pink tsunami.
Preliminaries
Like any pseudo essay, I need to first define my topic title. “Top” and “Ten” are fairly self-explanatory. But what on earth are “Old” and “Bishounens”?
Before reading on, one important issue to keep in mind is that all definitions are my definitions. They are not meant to be universal, so intellectual debates on what constitutes old and bishounens are rather irrelevant.
So ok. Here goes:
Old: This does not refer to the age of the bishounen, but rather the period of the anime in which the bishounen stars in. And no, I am not a fan of old school animes, so what is considered “old” here is far from “old” in most people’s view. I define “old” as anything produced before I first start to avidly watch anime; that is, anything produced and finished before fall 2005.
Bishounen: Another debatable definition. I take it literally and generally to refer to good looking men. I do not use it as it was originally meant (beautiful boys under a certain age), nor as it was occasionally meant (homosexual and/or feministic men).
A rule that I have in choosing the Top Ten is that only 1 character per anime will appear on this list. This is to prevent me from dominating the list with bishounens of the same anime.
All Japanese names are arranged in the original version; ie, the family name comes before the given name. Western sounding name(s) excluded, of course.
Ok then. On to the fun.
10) Sagara Sousuke from Full Metal Panic!
(Voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
I don’t think he needs any description… Any fan of mecha, romance and action would have at least heard of this anime. The male hero of a franchise that spawned three seasons, including an entire season made of fillers, this military man is one of the better known names in the anime industry.
Briaric point of view:
Buff, athletic, and weird, with some of the quirkiest deadpan humor I’ve ever seen. I totally dig that. Unfortunately, he has those ugly lines on his cheeks, remnants of a dated way of drawing. It’s weird that I like that crossed scar more than those irritating lines, even though all of them are just lines. Some points are also deducted because of his tendency to get beaten up by Chidori. Hey, I find that so unmanly, and it kind of offends my sense of equality, not to mention the degradation of the female gender into something prone to unreasonable violence and shrewish behavior.
9 ) Roy Mustang from Fullmetal Alchemist
(Voiced by Ohkawa Toru)
Yet another character that warrants little introduction. Sure, Roy isn’t the main character of the anime… but I daresay no one who say that he is unimportant, or even unmemorable.
Colonel Roy Mustang is the man who brought Edward Elric into the life of State Alchemists, and is a surrogate big brother and rival and irritating boss to the vertically challenged hero of FMA. He is the Flame Alchemist, and can produce fire with a snap of his fingers through the intricacies of alchemy and special gloves.
Briaric point of view:
Strictly speaking, Roy Mustang isn’t really a bishounen. His eyes are too slanted and small, his face too long at times and too squarish at (even more) times. But! He is more often than not seen in uniform (man in uniform!), and he has a charisma that quite simply overwhelms his less than perfect looks. And to be honest, he isn’t bad looking. Maybe it’s even the small, slanted eyes and square face that makes him what he is… and what he is, is quite simply a man with talent, leadership qualities, and most of all an aura of attractiveness.
8 ) Sohma Kyo from Fruits Basket
(Voiced by Seki Tomokazu)
Fruits Basket is a shoujo anime about the Sohmas who are possessed by the spirits of the Twelve Zodiac Animals, and the normal girl who interacts with them. One of the main characters in Fruits Basket, Kyo has a special (and unspecific in the anime) relationship with the heroine Tohru, as well as an intense rivalry with Sohma Yuki, the other main character. Kyo is possessed by the vengeful Cat, and is hence cursed.
Briaric point of view:
Kyo looks like Ichigo from Bleach… only he is better looking and with a better hair style. With that bright orange hair, he’s guaranteed to be bad tempered, impulsive, and stubborn. And boy, he has all those qualities in spades. But the thing is, he has more layers to him than that, and that is what makes him so fascinating. Points deducted, though, for the simple lines of his character design; not ugly, by any means. Just not as aesthetically pleasing to my eyes.
7 ) Tasuki from Fushigi Yūgi
(Voiced by Canna Nobutoshi)
Fushigi Yūgi is one of the biggest shoujo animes in the 90s. So much so I actually watched it on TV long before I was really into animes. Tasuki is not the main character of the anime (52 episodes, plus 13 OVAs), but I daresay he may be one of the most popular. With the (original?) bright orange hair, fangs, and a metal fan that emits flames, he is one of the Seven Celestial Warriors of the Suzaku, and one who has importance and screen time second only to Hotohori among all the non-Miaka-and-Tamahome characters.
Briaric point of view:
Tasuki has always been my favorite character in Fushigi Yūgi, because he is funny, good looking, and crazily sincere. And because he is a good foil to the irritating Tamahome and Miaka. Most of the time, he is the comic relief of the show. Yet at the moments when he isn’t the comic relief, his serious face is more than a little beautiful. He is impulsive and loud on the outside; but he is loyal and a softie in the inside, and what woman wouldn’t like this kind of man?
Not to mention the fangs. The fangs are sexy.
Points are deducted because… well, it has been a long, long time since I watched FY, and I’ve lost touch with my inner Tasuki-loving fervor.
6 ) Chrno from Chrno Crusade
(Voiced by Ishida Akira)
Chrno is the main character and namesake of the anime Chrno Crusade. He’s a demon, with Rosette Christopher, the heroine of the story, as his contractor. Because his powers are derived from Rosette’s life, he limits himself in his 12 year old looking self. Only at moments of duress does he change into his original demon form. And it is this original demon form who is labeled number 6, not the chibi 12 years old form.
Briaric point of view:
I never really like kids… so I almost didn’t pick up Chrno Crusade because the hero is short and young. But then I picked it up, and that’s it. I’m hooked. I love the anime, even though the ending sucks big time. I love Chrno in his chibi form, and I love him even more in his demon form. Hey, he has fangs, horns, and a tail, and yet looks as appealing as Johnny Depp. Nothing can beat that.
He’s number 6 because chibi Chrno is just not a bishounen to me (because he’s too young and short to be called my definition of a bishounen), and demon Chrno appears too infrequently to make more than a strong (as opposed to unforgettably strong) impression.
5 ) Isumi Shinichiro from Hikaru no Go
(Voiced by Suzumura Kenichi)
Hikaru no Go is one of those really, really popular animes in the late 90s, early 2000s. The anime, after all, sparked an interest in Go (a board game) in Japan and probably elsewhere in the world as well, in smaller scales.
Isumi is a rather minor character, being one of the Insei-s (Go professional students) who befriended the main character, Hikaru. He is the oldest Insei among Hikaru’s clique of friends, and is a strong Go player when he is able to control his emotions and anxiety. After going through training in China, though, he has the emotional control to complement his skills, and so became a professional Go player a year after Hikaru.
Isumi is also the person who made Hikaru picked up Go again, after the latter has lost his mentor and best friend.
Briaric point of view:
I was entranced in him when I watched that anime, mostly because of that look in his eyes when he plays Go. (Notice the percentage of screenshots with that particular angle?) I might have chosen 14 year old Hikaru, but for his 10 year old self with that baby fat that dominated half of the anime. Isumi, on the other hand, started out as good looking and grew up to be even more good looking. His training in China not only sharpened his Go skills, but also his personality, and it shows in his appearance.
The fact that he is voiced by my absolute favorite seiyuu, Suzumura Kenichi, doesn’t hurt either.
4 ) Kamui Shirou from X: TV
(Voiced by Suzumura Kenichi)
Kamui is the protagonist of X, and is a broody youngster with Issues. On one hand, he has to deal with his destiny; on the other hand, he has to save the world, or alternatively, destroy it. That should be more than any 15 year old to bear… but when you add to the mixture a dead potential love interest and an arch enemy who is also his childhood friend… that’s the angst that makes up X.
Briaric point of view:
What is a bishounen list without a CLAMP character? After all, CLAMP is known for their portrayal of bishounens with long limbs and anorexic bodies. In my opinion, Kamui is one of the better looking guys created under CLAMP’s pen. Sure, he still has those long limbs and thin body, but… at least his side profile is amazingly elegant and he has perfect facial features.
He doesn’t rate higher despite that perfection because of the sheer emo-ness that oozes from his pores.
3 ) Larva from Vampire Princess Miyu
(Voiced by Miki Shinichiro)
One of the less well known animes on this list. In fact, the top three bishounens all come from less “well known” animes.
Vampire Princess Miyu is the anime that got me started on animes in fall 2005. And because of that, it has a sentimental value that beats all logical analysis hands down. The anime is about Miyu, the Guardian who banishes demons back to the dark, and occasionally about her silent companion, Larva, the man with the eeky name but beautiful face.
VPM has two very good episodes that made up for the boredom that constitutes most of the first half of the anime. The two-episode arc “The Light of the Sea” (episode 13 and 14) talks about Larva and his past, and sheds a lot of light on the relationship of between Larva and Miyu.
Briaric point of view:
Larva is the personification of the big, silent protector. He always arrives at the nick of the moment to save Miyu (yes, it smacks of the damsel-in-distress syndrome, but hey, a girl can’t help wanting a strong protector), and yet at the same time he is not the “yes” man foil for Miyu, nor the beating bag. While he rarely disagree with Miyu, and behaves a lot like a servant/slave, the two episodes mentioned above reveals a lot of his character that was previously unseen. He is with Miyu because he understands her, and is a part of her, out of a sense of loyalty and even love. They need each other. And that is just so romantic that I can’t help loving him for that.
And that’s not mentioning the perfection of his face. The light blue hair (I like light/white hair), red eyes, and pale skin also create an otherworldly vibe. If Kamui has perfect features, it’s a perfection in the traditional anime-big-eyes CLAMP style. I find Larva’s perfect features a perfection that is more “real”, features that while unlikely to appear in real life, is still more likely.
Points deducted for the un-proportional body reminiscent of traditional American superhero style, which I totally do not like. Points then added for the incalculable sentimental value. The result is number 3.
2 ) Narumi Ayumu from Spiral: Suiri no Kizuna
(Voiced by Suzumura Kenichi)
Spiral is a detective anime with very real detective elements; the story is often convoluted and layered with twists and ambushes… sometimes too much so, causing a type of logical fallacy. And that’s not mentioning the less than complete ending. But that doesn’t detract from the fact that Spiral is pure entertainment, even for a non-mystery buff like me.
Ayumu is the main character of Spiral, who first solves various perplexing cases before tangling fully with the Blade Children, who are the main antagonists for most of the first half of the anime, and the co-protagonists for the later half. All of them are so smart they can all go to Harvard and come out as top of the class.
Briaric point of view:
Ayumu has those wonderful big eyes and tousled hair, and is a smart dresser. He is voiced by Suzumura Kenichi (yes, I really, really, really like him). He cooks wonderfully, and does housework. He has a tragic past and a tragic future. He has a “heck-care” attitude and complexities layered over very real sense of inferiority. And most of all, he is smart. There’s nothing sexier than a man with a brain and one who knows how to use it. Simply by virtue of his intelligence, he would probably be listed here. But add that to the entire package, you would get Narumi Ayumu, number 2 on my top ten old bishounen list.
He’s only number 2 because… unfortunately there is still someone who is more compelling than him.
1 ) Orphen from Sorcerous Stabber Orphen
(Voiced by Morikubo Shoutarou)
And Briar’s number 1 is out! Raise your hand if you know who this person is! -_+
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen, also known simply as Orphen, is a typical shounen anime made in by J C Staff in the late 90s. Not a very popular anime, though I think it’s a cult favorite.
The story is not exactly complex, where Orphen is the main character and a wizard who is trying to save his childhood friend and surrogate big sister and crush, Azalie, from her existence as a monster dragon. He is accompanied by his disciple Majic, his resident damsel-in-distress Cleo, and two irritating comic reliefs who pop in and out of the anime.
The sypnosis doesn’t do the anime justice, though, because while the anime isn’t the best anime by any calculations other than emotional, it does have more to it than just a straightforward tale. And in my opinion, one of those resounding factors that make the anime a success is the presence of Orphen, the number 1 “old” bishounen in Briar’s book.
Briaric point of view:
The number 1 “old” bishounen is so named because Orphen is the impossible personification of the man of my dreams.
Well, not really. In real life I probably wouldn’t be able to stand him. But as a fantasy, he has all the qualities I like.
He is a lot like Ayumu, in that he is strong intellectually; probably the smartest character in the anime. He is not as impulsive as most shounen heroes, and yet retains a lot of that purity of one-mindedness. Unlike Ayumu, he has no inferior complex, and instead is very capable and confident in himself. He is strong not only in terms of wizardly skills (he is one of the best wizards in the anime, even though most of it is hard work and practical knowledge), but also strong physically in an athletic way.
If anyone’s been following my posts on THAT, you would know my fascination with Kazuma of the Kaze no Stigma fame. Orphen is a lot like Kazuma, with that bad ass quality mingled in sheer capability, except that he is less callous and uncaring. Orphen, quite simply, is a bad ass with a heart of gold. Not to mention, he is funny in a way that doesn’t resort to slapstick humor.
Also, his single-minded pursuit of Azalie is a manifestation of his constant personality, yet another quality I look up to.
And purely aesthetically, wouldn’t you say that he has one of the best designed costumes (I think only second to Cloud of FF7: Advent Children) in animes? That red bandanna is cool, not to mention that dragon pendant. In terms of features, he has the same perfect alignment, except he is undeniably masculine in design, with strong lines to complement the prettiness.
I really don’t think there’s anything to pick on, in terms of his physical beauty.
Afterword
I wasn’t absent from Blogsphere just because of work… I was planning on this post, and it’s sister post Top Ten “New” Bishounens. So stay tuned for more! I’m not going to state a date, though, because I really do have a schedule that kills ruthlessly and indiscriminatingly.
Disclaimer: The pictures are all screenshots and taken from various sources, so don’t ask me where I got them. And because of my less than stellar knowledge of technology and my rather wacky computer, these screenies may not be as good as they could be. I humbly apologize.

nirai kanai » Blog Archive » Top Ten Favorite Male Anime Characters added these pithy words on Oct 21 07 at 8:40 pmAhaha, finally! A decent post about anime bishounens! There is hope for girls in anime blogs after all! Thank you Briar!
My quick thoughts on some your choices:
10) I actually find the lines quite charming. Other than that, he’s hot, he’s military-minded, he’s a certain sort of clueless… ^//^
Wait, where’s Hatsuharu here? Otherwise, I agree, except for the simplistic character design bit. Although that could just be because Fruits Basket was my first anime.
6) Haven’t watched it, but going from just looks alone…*shamelessly fangirls*
1) *raises her hand*
I only ever watched about half an episode or so before being distracted by other (shiny) things, so again I don’t know his personality that well. However, considering the part I did see involved him blowing up a wall in a fit of rage with some flashy magic, he won my approval wholeheartedly.
Top 10 ‘New’ Bishounen, hmmm? I can instantly think of one that, if not mentioned, will cause me to cry buckets of tears. Other than that, I await this list eagerly.
Funny…this post didn’t look quite so disjointed when I was typing it.
Ah well.
LOL Miniskirts Mustang :3
I prefer Chrno’s shota form
Also, WHUT NO NURIKO? YOU FAIL
DrmChsr0 added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 3:59 amwow, u sure have watched a lot of anime. I could only recognise the Sousuke, Roy, Tasuki, Kyou and Kamui. The rest is news to me-ok, I knew Chrno, but the chibi version coz for some unfathomable reason, I could not watch the series past first eps O.o
About Sousuke, I find him very, very attractive. Sure, he is annoying but he’s like a puppy (a point explained by Chidori herself) that I couldn’t help myself to adore him. If I were Chidori, I’d have him all for myself and kick Tessa away XP
Ooohh Tasuki…he’s the one for me in FY, those fiery hair, his comraderie with Tama, and his fangs, u’re right-he’s the sole reason I watched FY. But points deducted coz he DISLIKES women, I was like WTF?
Kyou…I love him for the tsundere(can I use that for men?) that he is and the fact that he’s a CAT and for the love of God I really love cats(and dogs too, that brings about
–Inuyasha? he’s protective, loyal (or too loyal) with soft long grey hair and fangs oh, and those pointy ears
XXX3 rarrww
–Genjo Sanzo? He’s so cool with holier-than-thou attitude, a deviant, with a godlike self esteem and very in control. And with some attitude to match. Oh, and that shining golden hair that made me lost sleep(from finishing all those Saiyuki eps)lol
As for Kamui, I watched X just recently becoz I found out about him from reading Tsubasa Chronicle, and to be honest, Kamui in Tsubasa is a way better bishie than the one in X anime. Maybe coz Clamp changed their style but imho he’s better drawn in Tsubasa :PP
so now I’m soo curious for your list of ‘new’ bishies-May I guess a few?(or perhaps influence u?) lol
-Kazuma lol so obvious X3
-Ryuuki(I’m so into Ryuuki x Shuurei so..) ^^;
-Fay D Florite-
-Naru
-Yuri Ou (the King version from Kyou Kara Maoh)
-Tamaki
-Yu Kanda from D Grayman
-Hagi from Blood+
-Lelouch
XPPPPPPPPPPPP
Danie added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 9:23 amGreat article, finally a coverage on bishonen that does not reek of scary fangirl.
New bishonen list? If I were to vote, I’d go with characters from:
Death Note, Geass, NANA, D.Gray-man, Ouran, Haruhi.. A Gurren Lagann wouldn’t look too bad either..?
(Does Gundam SEED, Naruto and/or Bleach fit into the “new” category? If so, I’m thinking they’re modern classics for many).
Anyway, no matter your choices I’m looking forward to the next post!
Oh, i like this little spark of pink! thanks!! (all the blogs are full with lolis….)
So,for me Sousuke Sagara is the number one, i really like him. And i agree with some of you choices, obviusly i have some others like Miroku from Inuyasha, and Shannon Cassul from scrapped princes.. oh, and Archer from Fate.
And about the new bishis, my number one is… Hei from Darker than BLACK , he is very damn hot!!
Thanks for the post and greetings!
Haha, wow. While we don’t have all to similar taste in men, we have similar taste in anime. I’ve seen all the series you listed and pretty much loved them all. Though I agree with your choices, each of these series tended to have someone else I preffered… Such as I like Kamui, but prefer Subaru. And I really really like Ayumu, but prefer Kanone. And rather than Tatsuki, Nuriko is by far my favorite (and favorite character ever, ever since I watched Fushigi Yuugi 8 or so years ago). BUT Kyou is deffinately the best from Fruits Basket : )
I also like Sousuke most from FMP. No questions… FMA was a big obsession of mine once but I got over it pretty quickly, though Ed was my favorite there. Oh, and I like Isumi and all but Waya as well as grown up Hikaru are higher in my book. Fun! Been a while I talked about anime guys (been more into cute 2D girls lately :D)
Current favorites though are Simon and Kamina from Gurren Lagann. And Tomoya from CLANNAD is pretty cute too.
Tess added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 4:02 pmOrphen!!!!!! Squeee, run around in circles, trips and dies. When I watched it, I thought he was hot, very hot. I’m glad someone else watched it, as far as I know, no one else’s even heard of Orphen.
Roy Mustang!!!!!! The love of my life, and you only ranked him ninth!! T_T I prefer the manga Roy better, only because his eyes are less slanty and his face is less…square. But, regardless, Mustang is the sexiest thing, ever. Ever, ever, ever. I love you just for including him.
Well, here are some that guys, not necessarily ‘old’ bishonen, that would’ve made my list…
-Griffith (are you kidding me? The hair, the eyes, the creepy demon thing at the end??)
-Guts (XD, XD!!! I love him though)
-Spike (just because. =P)
-The Gundam Wing guys, all of them (they were cute, all of them! =3)
-Sayoaran Li (I adore him, and his Tsubasa reincarnation)
-Miroku (perverted monks are a necessary part of life!)
-Jin (from Champloo, because guys with glasses are hot)
-Yuki (I prefer him to Kyou, but that’s just me)
-Hatori (come to think of it, Furuba had a lot of good looking guys, O_o)
And the slightly newer bishonen…
-Hei (do I really need to explain myself?)
-Simon (refer to the above)
-Kamina (the above, I say, the above!)
-Raito (he’s sexy, no matter how crazy and insane he is.)
-Allen Walker (is D.Gray Man post ‘05?)
-CLOUD STRIFE (he is gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous times a million, second to Mustang on my list.)
-The Gundam 00 guys (it’s like Gundam W, but shinier)
-Firo (too cute, honestly, for 1930s mafia, XD)
-Itoshiki (you know, I have a thing for guys with glasses….^^)
And I’m going to stop, because this list is huge….You know what? You’ve inspired me to make my own top 10 bishonen/male anime character/game character list thing. I love you Briar! XD
And I’m looking forward to the sister post! =D!
Xerox added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 7:14 pm….What’s wrong with lolis? Lolis are cute, wonderful and extremely sweet entities that should be worshiped at all costs. Wait, I am in a bishounen post in my own blog O_O;;;
Oh my, I have been blinded.
Nevertheless, I actually like this rather different entry because in a rather male-dominated anime blogosphere, there is at least a chance for Briar to express something different. ^^
Impz added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 7:21 pmI cannot even start to say about my list of bishounens
because i don’t even know where to start O+O..
However my taste tend to go with older and more mature looking guys
but yah all those above are yummy..ROY ROY ROY!!…..larva larva!!!
My anime favs will be

3)Getbackers!! GINsama!!
4)Samurai Champloo as someone mentioned :JIN!! glasses and sword!!
5) and naturally Peace Maker Kurogane :Hijikata (Just look at that opening sequence of him with the sword!!) although i guess okita will be more of the bishie in there
6)Fruits basket : for me i like shigure, hatori, kureno opps all the older guys XP but mm i will vote for haru though for the bishie it will be usagichan XP
7)Saiunkoku monogatari anyone? haha ryuuki is idiotic but when he don’t talk he is a beauty XP and shuuuurei when he lets down his hairrrrr (purrrs)
8)Kyou kara maou : Mr silver hair priest when he don’t talk XP, the previous incarnation of baseball friend?( that black hair guy), conrad XP..

and we didn’t even talk about pure manga bishies *+*
*being dragged away*
I wonder what I should say about myself since I recognized 9/10 of the guys on this list. XD I haven’t watched Spiral and have really only seen a part of FY (although I know enough to pretend I have seen most/all of it). Full Metal Panic, I’ve watched some eps… But yeah, Vampire Princess Miyu is the only one out of that list that I know practically nothing about, haha.
Orphen is seriously awesome, haha. The end of the series was just great. Second season was kind of eh though.
Anvilfactory added these pithy words on Oct 07 07 at 11:41 pmI am SO glad someone mentioned Spiral, since it is one of my favorite anime if it wasn’t for that cursed ending
If there is one anime that needs to be remade, Spiral would be it
deltazechs added these pithy words on Oct 08 07 at 6:25 amWhat about Yuki Eiri from Gravitation? He’s my top most delicious looking bishounen of all time.
Yuki folever!
yeesian added these pithy words on Oct 08 07 at 6:42 am@ Sly Sloth: Thanks.
Compliment like this make my head swell and also make all the past week of hard work worthwhile.
Regarding Sousuke, he was actually never supposed to be on the list. LOLz. I couldn’t find anymore “old” bishounens, so he sort of became a fill-in. I guess all of us do have some different taste.
Do watch Chrno Crusade; the story makes everything worthwhile, even if it does have a crappyish ending.
Your comment isn’t disjointed at all.
@ DrmChsr0: Yeah, if I didn’t have that rule about only picking one character per anime, Nuriko would probably be next on the list. Unfortunately I like Tasuki more than Nuriko, although Nuriko is my next favourite in FY.
@ Danie: Give Chrno Crusade another chance, Danie. It’s great, and even its ending has a lot of good stuff, even though there are parts which I dislike.
I thought Tasuki’s hatred for women is sort of endearing.
Because it’s obvious that he doesn’t really hate women, and especially not Miaka. I would love to see him interact with someone other than Miaka…
Inuyasha, personally I won’t call him a bishounen. From an absolutely personal point of view, I think his face is too round ahd his looks too youngish looking, and the drawing style too “old school” for me to truly enjoy him. His elder bro (what’s his name again? Ses…. something), on the other hand, is closer to being bishounen, although I don’t have any strong feelings for him.
As for Genjo Sanzo… I don’t really watch Saiyuki because of the extreme liberties they took, so I couldn’t comment. Objectively, though, I agree that all the guys (except for the Monkey adaption) are good looking guys.
New bishies… I should reserve commenting as these are addressed in the sister post.. as soon as I can get it up, anyway.
@ Kirby: I am actually quite a fan girl.
Thanks for the compliments! Personally, I’m inclined to call Naruto and Bleach “old” anime, but I did define “old” as produced and finished before Fall 2005, so… I guess they are kind of new.
@ Vane: Pink pink pink!
I hate pink as a colour, but as a figuratively mephator, I’m 100% behind it. I wanna see more pink in the anime bloggersphere!
Oh hell, I forgot about Archer.
He’s one cool bishounen, and I totally agree with you. Although by the looks of it, he will probably replace Sousuke in my books.
I did consider Shannon, but he isn’t as pretty as Christopher (the axe guy, but he’s too young looking to be on my list), and there is something about the composition of his face that I find a bit un-bishounen. He’s still a great character, though.
New bishies…. reserving comments!
@ Tess: LOL we really do have similar taste in anime. I think you are the only one so far who has watched all that I’ve watched. Seriously, I didn’t expect a lot of people to watch the top three animes; they are rather obscure and out of mainstream popularity.
If I didn’t have that rule on one character per anime, other characters may probably make the list. Probably not Subaru and Kanone (I still prefer Kamui’s looks, though not his personality… and I like Kousuke Asazuki instead of Eyes or Kanone), but definitely Nuriko and Asazuki.
I like Ed… but he’s not a bishounen. Well, less of one than Roy.
I too like Waya, and especially adult Hikaru, whose adult self is seriously good looking. Too bad I keep thinking about his kiddish self.
@ Xerox: *squeeee back* OMG someone loves Orphen as much as me!
Cool, Xerox! He’s is definitely the reason I watch the anime at all. And yeah, he’s truly, truly hot. The perfect man.
See, Roy is a great guy, and I really, really, really like him. But I don’t see him as a bishounen. To be honest, I cheated a little to put him on the list, because he is so much less handsome than most other people. The only way I can justify it is the fact that he has a lot of physical attractiveness, if not beauty.
(Personal opinions only)
Griffith: eeks. Old school. Enough said. ![]()
Guts: Ditto. And are you seriously serious??????
Spike: Eh… he’s not pretty enough, although he does have a lot of personality.
Gundam: It may be surprising, but I have yet to watch a single episode of Gundam. But Gundam Wing’s style is so… old school.
Prejudiced, that’s me.
Syaoran: LOL yeah, he is kinda cute. But… cute, not bishounen!
Jin: I’ve been wanting to watch that anime. Yet to pick it up. Will have to watch it soon if there really is such a good looking guy in it.
Hey, looking forward to seeing your own spot of pink!
@ Impz: Are you regretting asking me to blog for you yet?
My aim is to overwhelm the blog with pink. See if I don’t do it someday.
@ Neko79: CLAMP really do have a lot of bishounens. Perfect faces, most of them, even if they have weird bodies. Gin? If I put in Getbackers, it would be Ban.
Gin is cute, but Ban is so much more bishounen.
I agree with you with regards to Conrad in Kyou Kara Maou. He’s pretty good looking. And if I don’t have an age limit to my bishounen definition, I would have put Natsume in. He is seriously good looking, for a 10 year old. (or was that 12 year old?)
Anvilfactory: Cool! Someone else who has similar taste in anime.
Vampire Princess Miyu is sort of a hate-it-or-love-it sort of anime, so if you do pick it up, be prepared. Still, I like the atmosphere, and I especially like Larva. While the first half is rather boring monster-of-the-month format, the two episodes I mentioned do make up for it.
I agree with regards to the second season. It was totally crap. :S So crappy, in fact, that if it wasn’t for my fanatic fervour for Orphen, I would never have finished it. In the end, not even Orphen’s sheer bishounen-ness could save the second season for utter stupidity and recycling plots/scenes.
Total crap, I say.
@ deltazechs: I love Spiral too. I even dig out the manga, something I rarely do since I don’t read manga at all. The ending of the entire saga is so… epic.
@ yeesian: Hmmm… Yuki Eiri. He’s pretty good looking, but I can’t comment much as I didn’t watch many episodes of Gravitation.
Briar added these pithy words on Oct 09 07 at 7:26 amWow to this post XD! Briar, you are forgetting one thing about Ayumu, he plays piano well!!! I don’t know about you, but playing piano = 2 times hotter! Smart, cool, good looking, good at houseworks, plays piano, and does not treat women like some weaklings that need to be protected all the time. I’ll take inferior complex anytime rather than arrogance, plus he has guts when he needs it.
Ayumu is definitely number 1 for me. I found Orphen a little hot-blooded. Otherwise, from Fruits Basket, I prefer either Yuki or Hatsuharu. For FMA, I prefer Ling Yao (manga). For Chrno, I prefer Joshua. For X, Subaru. I did not watch Miyu and Fushigi Yuugi enough to know the guys’ personalities so I can’t say there. My taste is rather different from you, it seems XD.
Since the cut-off point seem to be 2003, there are plenty of others that can fit in. Do ungoing series like Tenipuri, Meitantei Conan (Heiji), Naruto, etc counts? Other than the animes already mentioned above, how about Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai Deeper Kyou (Kyoushirou). Weiss Kreuz, Yami no Matusei and Gundam Wings had plenty of female fans too, I believe.
Too bad plenty of old shoujo mangas did not become animes… I like Kazuomi from Delicious! for being nice, patient, good looking and good at cooking (unfortunately, he can’t play piano).
Aine added these pithy words on Oct 09 07 at 2:43 pmThis was a very good piece, I’m sad to say that your Number One was the only one I don’t know about. Hmm, I started anime too late.
mokokits added these pithy words on Oct 09 07 at 8:09 pmIsn’t Roy a bit too old to be a bishounen? In fact, I think he is too old. The proper term for him should be “biseinen”.
Anyway, I am not going to bother mentioning who are my top 10 bishounen yet. Give me time. I’d definitely have a hard time naming my top 10 bishoujo though. =P
Bata-kun added these pithy words on Oct 09 07 at 10:57 pmHehe I have to admit I have a soft spot for Sagara.
Hmm more old bishies you couldn’t think of. Funnily enough another Sagara comes to mind. Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin. Although I like Kenshin more myself, hehe there’s another redhead for you though!
And InuYasha would get points for the fangs, I agree you gotta love those fangs which is why I always found Tasuki cute. I loved Fruits Basket and Kyo, but somehow always seemed to have more of a soft spot for Yuki. Maybe its because I wanted the Prince to win over the ruffian style guy for once. But alas it wasn’t meant to be.
But I yeah Inu’s brother Seshoumaru is probably more befitting the bishie mold.
Ahh Chrno. His chibi form is cute but definitely not as attractive as his more adult human form.
Roy always made me giggle, well except when he was being serious. Poor man, seen a lot of bad in his life. But he particularly made me giggle when I was playing Curse of The Crimson Elixir on the PS2. There was this cut scene where he was walking around striking the enemy down with flames, but he was making such a big show of it. He does have flair to him that one.
As for the new ones. I don’t think you can go very far in Saiunkoku without finding a pretty guy. And well I have to admit that Lin, Naru and Bou-san, kept me quite distracted during Ghost Hunt. Pray for me people I’m going to watch the Urado arc again, all by myself ‘gulp’ Hubby-sama has a hockey game to play. ^-^
And I bet Kakashi is a looker under that mask of his
You know there are so many but I can’t think of them right now. Oh Demon Eyes Kyo isn’t bad, although his personality could use a bit of work ^-^ His counterpart Kyoshiro when he was badass is pretty.
And maybe its the outfits, but the Ax members of Trinity Blood have quite a few lookers in their ranks. Ahh Abel, bumbling Abel. I love you to pieces. And well Hugue de Watteau aka Sword Dancer is gorgeous!
Hmm Kakashi, Sesshoumaru, Abel… Maybe I just have a love of silver hair. In which case its a pity the anime showcasing the talents of the pretty Dante from DMC sucked!
Is the list limited to anime or can we discuss bishies in manga too? Hmm well I guess some technically fall under both ie Fruba.
Although we’d probably be here all day if we did.
There is a lot pretty to look at in Hana Kimi and if you’ve gotten the chance to see the Doujinshi Hisaya Nakajo did of InuYasha you’re in for a bishie treat there. Her version of Sesshoumaru is simply gorgeous. I want to be able to draw hair the way she does. She just makes it look so pretty!
@neko79, Yes I love Jin too and Hijikata from Peacemaker Kurogane is pretty damn nice. But Souji is cute I agree.
I also thought Gennosuke and Kyoshirou from Basilisk were pretty easy on the eye too.
Hmm and Dark from D.N Angel is pretty cute.
Ahh I gotta stop, if I list all the cute guys in all the animes I’ve seen or manga’s I’ve read I’ll be here all night!
D.J added these pithy words on Oct 10 07 at 7:55 pmFinally, a break from all of those lolis. *takes in a deep breath* Hooray for bishounens! Now that I think about it, more than half of the entries are about lolis. So thank you for posting an entry on bishounens.
Let’s see, what would be my bishounens…
To be honest, the second anime I ever watched was Fushigi Yuugi, and the only character that was left imprinted in my mind was Nuriko. I couldn’t remember the names of any of the other bishounens. Probably because I was sobbing my eyes out after he died….
I also like Kyo, but I prefer Yuki and Hatori. I really want to go up to Hatori and give him a great big hug….
I also liked Kamui from X, but he got too emo after he chose to be on the good side so I went for Subaru instead. Not that he’s any less emo or anything….
Saiunkoku Monogatari was the very first anime I watched, and so I fell in love with Seiran. I love him so much. With his “I’ll protect you and kill anyone I need to so you can be happy” attitude, we can take over the world together and- I mean, he would be a nice boyfriend….
Tsukimori from La Corda D’Oro is another favorite of mine. Though I’m always torn between him and Tsuchiura because he plays the piano, which I also play. So usually I let Hino have Tsuchiura and I get to have Tsukimori-kun.
Let’s see, I fangirled over Sesshomaru from InuYasha, Kyouya from Ouran High School, Hei from Darker than Black, Yasuhara from Ghost Hunt, Shikamaru from Naruto, Train from Black Cat, Heiji Hattori from Detective Conan, and Kazuma from Kaze no Stigma.
Wow, I think I’ve wasted most of my life fangirling.
@D.J. Dark from D.N.Angel is awesome.
Weatherfield added these pithy words on Oct 14 07 at 8:11 pmno Kurama?? ![]()
Kurama is an old bishie that will forever stay in my heart… :3
he, together with Tamahome, Hotohori and Kamui are my first bishies. I’ve only grown to love tsunderes like Tasuki after I got past the “kiddie” stage
Sousuke is love.
back at the time I watched Orphen, I still wasn’t into badass guys that much, so I would’ve placed Larva or Kamui at the top of my list. but times have changed~
usagijen added these pithy words on Oct 21 07 at 7:58 amI’d prefer Hotohori(Fushigi Yuugi) rather than Tasuki(Fushigi Yuugi)..Maybe its coz of his long hair and pretty looks..I admit he looks more of a bishie than any characters I’ve seen in animes
Shi Ryuuki(Saiunkoku Monogatari) is quite a bishie too..he has so much resemblance to Hotohori (by looks) ..ooh and dun forget Sakujun..I really like him even though he’s not much of a good person..both of them has made my top bishie list even though I just started watching Saiunkoku Monogatari
And another I think is bishieful is Dark from DNAngel..he has beautiful eyes and hair..but I think his voice is kind of too deep for Dark’s looks
And Ouran boys~ I love all of the guys in Ouran High School Host Club…esp Tama-chan..though he always makes some posing moments there is a quite handful of bishiness in his looks..well..thats what I think..but beside him stands Kyoya..somehow I wondered “Why can’t he just get rid of his specs?”..he’s hot but he always hiding it..and the specs doesn’t even have any power -.-”
I really like both Chrno’s looks whether chibi or demon mode..chibi form looks so sincere while the demon form potrays the opposite..though I don’t agree it was a bad ending for Chrno Crusade even though its really sad…if the main characters didn’t die then the facts in the beginning of the story doesn’t existed..I am soo hoping for the second season but I don’t know if thats possible
