ODEX’s reprieve for anime downloaders in Singapore
The original statement from the forum thread…
No backlog letters will be sent.
No one will receive any more letters dated after August who addresses illegal filesharing with dated evidence.
Let me put it in a very clear and straightforward release to avoid any misunderstanding then.
If an individual stop downloading now, today, on the 3rd September, 2007, he will have no possibility of ever receiving any letters from the copyright holders, (aka the Odex letter) as we will not take anything that he has downloaded before this date against him. We will not send any letters to him.
If an individual continues to download and shows up on our investigation we will send him a letter to ask him to explain why it is so. If he cannot give us a reasonable explanation of why that happened, we will reserve the rights to take legal action against him, with all the evidences that we have collected before and after the 3rd of September (there would necessarily be evidence after the 3rd in order for this to happen).
If you have any friends who still do not know the danger of filesharing, please let them know. Filesharing is illegal and it infringes the intellectual property of the copyright holders. Please do not download.
(o.o)
For those who are still not in the know (from TJ and Darkmirage), this forum post in ODEX’s community forum seems to promise much for all. I will have to wait for the official press release by ODEX. I will say that this is definitely a good twist for PR, and I am sure that many will be interested to see whether this statement will pull through.
I hope it does. I am not going to comment since it’s pretty obvious where the three camps will stay. The neutrals, the flamers and the anime fans. I know which one I am in. On an unrelated note, some stupid NSF went out with a SAR 21 and bullets. Sigh, didn’t someone tell him not to shoot in public?

Hopefully the anime community and Odex can now work together in bringing more shows over because their VoD is still looking pretty miserable right now.
I think it will be better to let such an obnoxious company close down than support it. We can lobby other distributors in Singapore to bring in the goods instead of blind faith.
so strict…tsk tsk…
Personally I think they should have done this first BEFORE Odex initiated their witchhunt.
Anyway instead of focusing on enforcement Odex instead should be devoting their effort to improving their products so fans will actually buy it and not resort to downloading to get good quality subs
I’ll repeat exactly what I said on RIUVA.
Hmmm, I have been thinking about this and the motivations behind it.
Sing seems to be in damage-control mode here, in order to stem the bad rep that Odex has beeen getting, and to stop people from resuming their downloading.
In light of the pacnet victory, some of the people who stopped downloading had decided that a conclusive victory had been brought against Odex, and hence resumed downloading thought BT. Perhaps this is Sing’s way of trying to persuade more people from resuming their downloading. Or it could also be a way to look good, -it sounds as if Odex is trying to turn over a new leaf(compared to it’s heavy-handed sudden shock-tactics). Either way, we can see through this sleigh of hand if there is a definite conclusion. IF Odex has a winnable case in court against D/lers, then this seems to be a nicey offer. However, I am firmly believe that Odex has no case against D/Lers. This appears be nothing more than a way of preventing an en-masse resumption of BTing.
I do, however, note that this is made by Sing, and not an official statement. In other words, we have no confirmation that this decision has been approved by the company Odex, just by Sing alone. I find it reasonable to give him the benefit of the doubt, since he seems to have learned the consequences of making rash coments.
@Chraen: Well, I do agree as well, and ODEx is at least making the right moves for this time. I will see if they can fulfill the promise.
@Abao: It’s logical that a commercial film, no matter how dubious, will want to protect its own profit. I do not think that it should be seen in an extremely negative light, since you go into a business not to be a charity, but to be a profit taker. A commercial and harsh point of view, but possibly logical if you are really a businessman.
Nevertheless, anyone deserves a chance. With your logic, we should really hang all criminals, since they do not deserve a second chance considering how dubious they are
@Rollchan: They are, but at least they are trying. I give them that.
I agree that chances can be given, but given the contradictory responses of odex reports even from our pro-govt, pro-busniess MSM, its hard to believe that they are going to change for the better.
As a conspiracy theorist, I refer you all to the 2:30pm statement xysing made.
AVPAS action instead? Technically speaking, that makes alot of sense.
hooga hooga.
@Exalt dragon: It is definitely damage control by any luck, but it is always welcome when a company is willing to listen to their fans. I think that if the fans are going to continue flaming them even if they are saying the right stuff (and hopefully follow them up), then they are merely flamers since copyright infringment is a huge thing.
I note as well that it is not an official statement, but I am sure that with the forum post of him “caught downloaders o_o” has taught him well that evidence can be found anywhere, and he has done an excellent PR move in this. I am not sure if it has any repercussions for the nation in terms of being too loose on piracy in general too.
@Malachi: On the flipside, if they have done just this, will many people listen to them? I don’t think so
I guess this is just a thought at the end of this saga. Hopefully it ends now.
@abao: Every business has its weak spot. ODEX is weak at PR, but i will give them the benefit of the doubt for now. They deserve one chance, and they are trying to simply earn some money now from VoD.
@Kokanaden: LOL. i hope not.
How Odex decides to make a profit is their business, however, just because something is legal or even moral doesn’t necessarily mean that it is smart.
Especially when there

Oh wait, wrong topic.
I guess that’s a good thing for Singaporeans… how Odex will stop with the “Inquisition.” The siege has been lifted so they can enjoy their fix now.
Lifted? No, it’s just a ruse.
It may seem that someone is holding out the olive branch, but watch out for that pit that just opened up below you.
Don’t trust anything until it has been put in black and white, signed, and proofread by an army of lawyers.
Ho, Ho, Ho!
Good point, DrmChrs0. That would be so cruel a trap indeed. Lies, rumors… spread to ensnare more 9 year olds thinking they were safe. Would they be so dreadful as to do something like that…? Could be.
I’m just glad I don’t like in Singapore.

Singapore is a great country, and I love the food there. =D
Watch it, guys. He didn’t say anything about the AVPAS.
This depends on whether said poster has the authority to make such statements and to have them be binding.
Channel New’s Asia Get Rea! is doing a feature on the ODEX Saga for Episode 9. This episode will air next Monday on 15th October at 2030hrs Singapore time (that’s 8.30pm). The repeat telecast will be shown at 2330hrs.
