I am sure that many of you who reads the Straits times on page 3 will have the news, but if you have not, here is an excerpt from the news article.
The Singapore distributor of popular Japanese animated cartoons called anime has won the right to track down fans who download the programmes illegally using their Starhub Internet accounts.
A Subordinate Court has ordered the telco to disclose the identity of about 1,000 of its subscribers accused of illegally downloading anime.
…StarHub had initially resisted the company’s efforts to get its customer data, said a spokesman for the telco, as it had “an obligation to protect our customers’ information”
But it now has no choice but to comply with the court order, as ODEX had “satsfied the court of its need for the information.
It is on today’s news while I was happily reading my newspaper, so for Starhub subscribers, good luck. 1000 of you might be in a bit of a trouble if Straits Times is anything accurate. To add, Pacific Net seems to be the only firm that has not succumbed to the application made by Odex, but it seems likely by lawyer and analysts that the plaintiff often have a good record of success from cases of private information being disclosed.

tueac added these pithy words on Aug 13 07 at 8:10 pmHighly doubt PacNet will not give the records if pressured. This is no different when Mp3 downloading was rampant last time…

birdsAD added these pithy words on Aug 14 07 at 2:49 amthat’s an ouch. but still doubt, privacy concerns please….oh please….Use the service, bound by the terms, but is there a binding there in the contract about “privacy”? take it to court then. challenge them (if you want to).

think can get ready to die
That’s quite scary, actually. Imagine being fined that much for just downloading anime, when it’s just something most people do for fun. \:
