Code Geass 24-25 END: You did what? (Daft Decisions, and Epic Disasters)

snapshot20070731154107.jpg
Even so you lordship, you have an obligation to take Nunnally away from Lulu. She is not safe with him. You can’t die on us. Cornelia-sama fighto!

Well Code Geass has ended in true Halo 2 fashion. Gnashing of teeth until fall 2007 aside it was nevertheless a very quirky series. How quirky? Well let’s just say that Area 11 Zero Japan boasts a number of amazing absurdities and glorious mistakes rivals similar tales from post colonial Africa. A slew of very humorous tales in a dark morbid sort of way, unless of course you have to live with it that is. So without dragging it out too long here are four mad schemes and other such “brilliant” ideas.

You Mated With Whom?

Ougi, Ougi, Ougi you poor bastard. Can’t catch a break can you? Not a good terrorist/freedom fighter, teacher, or good with the ladies are you? Ougi lived alone in a run down apartment by himself subsisting on instant ramen for many years. That is of course until he found an amnesia ridden lady wearing fishnet stockings on a pier. Normally one would have tried to seek medical attention or reported it to the authorities, but this is Ougi let’s be real about this…

snapshot20070731153740.jpg
Oh Geass No! Chigusa’s gonna get raped.

In Ougi’s mind he was a teacher so he can easily play doctor, and having undressed her he must have been infatuated. It never crosses his mind that some one may be looking for her and perish that thought that such a fine woman could ever have found a significant other. Impossible, he thought this woman must be single just like me! So off he went and to his credit he did a fine job of “domesticating” her. He even named her, slept with her, and had it all on tape. Now normal people would have problems sleeping with people who have forgotten everything. After all it’s sort of like sleeping with a mentally challenged person; they are not completely there in terms of mental faculties. She could have been married. She could have been around the block a few times and gotten some nasty VDs. She had fishnet stockings and there is only one profession in the world that still uses those. Here’s a hint its one of the oldest professions in the world and it’s everywhere.

One thing poor Ougi never counted on though was Chigusa, or Villetta would one day remember everything. When she did…hell hath no greater fury. It’s bad enough Ougi took advantage of her in her special state, but the bastard was taping her! Worse still he ran off to play war when she was abducted. When they met again at the Ashford Academy Ougi never really pondered on how his domesticated Chigusa could have made her way past a war zone. She must love him very much he concluded even if she had weapons pointed at her she could never be angry at him.

snapshot20070731153808.jpg
Not if Villetta can help it…Take that!

His last mistake with Chigusa was he got too close, and Villetta was having none of it. So she disarmed him and used his own weapon to shoot him. Ougi forgot that when interrogating people even ones you think you know to post a guard and keep them a reasonable distance away. Ougi should have acted with some professionalism and just gone through procedure they could have had make up copulation later.

I assure you that the only thing Ougi saved in this debacle was himself from doing dishes. Saving Chigusa/Villetta is nothing more than a Zeroist Myth and Ougi propaganda.

Tell me again Ougi-san why you slept with her?

You Put Who In Command?

The Grand Master of the Order of the Black Knights, Zero was at the top of his game. His operations thus far resulted in resounding successes, with a few minor setbacks. So what if he betrayed a couple of friends? He could make new ones and he had a huge supply of adoring fans that would be honored to lick the bottom of his shoes. So in his last operation he could not possibly lose he had a legion of hate filled Japanese ready to kill and had already planted his saboteurs inside of the Britannian Defense Lines. As long as he was in charge who cared about who was in charge of what? As long as his brilliant generalship was at the helm there was no way he could lose.

snapshot20070731155720.jpg
Yeah, you are so dead…By the way I bet many of us made that same face when we learned who was given rank.

While he only had one commander with upper level command experience and good all round regimental staff, he needed more commanders. At this point Zero could have called it off to train new commanders and allowed Cornelia to grieve over her sister in some elaborate ceremony and wallow in tears for a good month or two. After all, the turn of events was shocking, let the Britannia busy themselves with damage control and restoring order. It was unlikely the memory of the events would be so easily forgotten so the natives were with him for the long haul. It was a spontaneous riot by a bunch of people that were just recently added to the Black Knight army. Shooting straight is hard for new people, more so if they are doing it while being shot at.

He could wait, but that would mean that he could not take advantage of the chaos. He was Zero the unbeatable, and timid commanders don’t win battles. Bold ones always win! He was head honcho so he could appoint people to simply relay his orders. After all he always grasped the situation and Cornelia was on the run. His army only had to do what he told them to do heck its was so simple a task that even a child could be appointed to do it. So appoint Zero did! His candidates you ask? Why a loli, his minister of propaganda, and a teacher of course. He was unwilling to break up the staff of his only qualified commander even if it meant strengthening the line as a whole. Everything would be fine, they were just pawns anyways as long as he pulled the strings there was no way he could fail.

snapshot20070731155733.jpg
Yeah as loli-licious as she is; she ain’t officer material. I can’t believe Zero chose her based on her cries of onii-chan.

True he could have trained his lower level commanders better, but Zero had another reason for not making a world class general staff. Trained officers and non-commissioned officers might get ideas and start thinking on their own or even end up being better commanders than he. The last time his pawns got ideas they suffered badly. No, thought Zero I am commander of this army and I don’t need people mucking up my great plans with their own ideas, better keep them as dull as bricks. So dull they remained.

Sadly like Napoleon at Waterloo Zero could not be there to command the army for the entirety of the battle. In fact he had some personal business to attend to last I heard. So how did these new commanders fare? Well the teacher ended shot after letting some one through the lines, the good minister spent the duration of the battle waiting at a TV station and touring the city, and the Loli was trying to call Zero-nii about what to do since it was past her bed time. As for his only good commander, the poor guy was busy trying to assault a well defended position when overall command was given to him. Worse the only qualified commander was in the thick of the melee, he can’t command with a cool head when dueling let alone after being hit over the head with the WTF stick.

snapshot20070731155731.jpg
Yep this face exudes confidence and leadership. Too bad the German Warrior reputation has fallen quite a bit, then again he must really be an 11.

Tell me again Zero how unimportant lower level commanders are?

You Guarded Your Sister and Friends How?

Like any military and political leader Zero needed bodyguards to protect himself from his numerous enemies. So he formed a bodyguard division or Zero Squadron. How many people you ask? Well like all men drunk with power Zero was not above having fun with names. In practice there was the first class fanatic Kallen and the wannabe bureaucrat Tamaki. There were a couple others but their names are now forgotten. Suffice to say it never got bigger than a platoon.

snapshot20070731152614.jpg
Oh, Lulu that’s not how you use penal troops…Wait you don’t even believe in jails? WTF? He has war criminal written all over him. Make him run through a mine field or something.

Now Kallen was a great many things, but her loyalty bordered on dog like. After securing his kid sister Zero told himself that he was going to protect this wheelchair bound kid. So what does he do? He could have left Kallen behind since she could be counted on to die in Nunnally’s defense if something did go wrong. Besides, Zero knew that Kallen would never allow them. to be harmed. His other choice was to leave it to his peons and free up a good soldier who could be used at the front to fight Suzaku who was sure to come for him. Sure Kallen had thus far lost miserably in every duel or gotten a draw at best, but this could be her lucky day. She was over due for one, besides that Gefun Disturber that worked so well in the past without fail could break down. However, Zero never liked having to deal with Indian tech support, so let’s make sure he concluded.

Thus, Zero left everything in the hands of Ougi and Tamaki. Too bad Tamaki wielded a gun more lazily and dangerously than a toddler, he also had a mean streak of brawling and applying violence in random directions. Tamaki beat up old men and tried to mug a couple in a ruined park. Now for a commander who prided himself in getting people to do what he wanted Zero’s choice to keep Tamaki is a very strange one. Perhaps keeping the maniac seemed like a good idea at the time, but it would have been wiser to put Tamaki in the thick of the fighting so the next time he feels like applying violence in random directions there would be a good chance that the enemy might get hurt too. However Zero went with the idea that having this overly violent guy guarding his sister would work out.

snapshot20070731155837.jpg
Lost again? Grab a Snickers gun and make yourself useful. Goddamn it point it that way…

Tamaki however started getting ideas and giving orders like shooting the student council. As for Kallen she lost miserably again and the Gefun Disturber went off without a hitch. That is until a plucky pilot named Cecile and a Mad Scientist named Lloyd took on the entire garrison. They succeeded in freeing Suzaku, and began evacuating most of the students from the academy to boot. Tamaki shot fruitlessly until the Nina bomber brought everything to a grinding halt. Oh and Zero’s kid sister you ask? Well she kinda got kidnapped again.

So tell me Zero why removing Kallen leaving Tamaki around as part of the guard was a good idea?

You Lived Your Life How?

We all know that C2 has achieved her own cult of personality with her unique array of art work and cosplay. Nevertheless even immortals are not infallible…

You Ran Through Where?

snapshot20070731155419.jpg
Hey at least he even bothered to ask. I told you the Kaiser’s men were jittery in trenches, but no…By the way what is with the M35 helmet in WWI? Oh, Sunrise you forgot the two lugs to make it authentic, such laziness.

World War I was a dangerous time, even more dangerous if you run through No Man’s Land. However C2 was not informed about the dangers of artillery bursts, tanks, and German Soldiers. Surely she thought that since she was obviously a woman in a skirt that both sides would leave her alone. Sadly artillery rounds and bullets are very democratic and don’t discriminate. There was also the issue of German troops defending against British tanks, it makes them very jittery. Jittery enough to shoot anyone not who is not German in their trenches…just be glad they did use the flammenwerferapparate for good measure.

You Gave who Geass Powers?

snapshot20070731154153.jpg
Yeah giving Geass powers to a child was a mistake. An emo self-righteous teenager? Sure, why not how bad could it be…

C2 has about as much luck picking good Geass candidates as she has crossing No Man’s Land. There was the issue of Mao who turned out to be more concerned with C2 than what ever grand plan she had going. Lulu did not turn out so well, hundreds of thousands dead, kidnapped sister, back stabbed family and friends, Todo in charge, the list goes on… However he gives hope to uh… wait take off a few thousand dead, disillusioned Kallen, wide eyed minister of propaganda, uh 1 person. Still that must count for something right?

You Kissed Who?

snapshot20070731155617.jpg
Shirley is gonna kill you…

Now C2 is a girl and like a lot of young (okay so she’s coming to her first 1000 years at the very least) single otome she wants to be loved. That’s why she kissed Lulu on the lips. No harm can come of this innocent little peck tongue and all though it may have been. Sure she cannot die or stay dead even if she is slowly sinking to a very crushing depth. Big deal, no harm ever came from getting too close to her candidates, right? None of them have allowed themselves to be obsessed with her.

Oh wait, Mao kinda got the wrong idea from a lullaby…At least she did not give Lulu her real name, Oh Geass No!

So C2 have you been living an honest and happy life?

Final Thoughts: I really hope Cornelia lives through this one. Out of all the commanders she is by far the best. She grew as a character much more than I expected even if it took Euphie’s death for her to finally accept Suzaku. Thank Haruhi-sama that Cornelia was not rolling over every time she did battle with Zero. Hopefully she comes back and we can find out how she could inspire such loyalty, determination, and martial prowess in her troops. Even if she is not always victorious she is after all human and not relying on a bunch of one eyed stares to keep her men in the fight, surely that counts for something. I am most curious on how far her hero worship and adoration of Lulu’s mom goes. Lastly yes, I am a total Cornelia fanboy. I know a good commanding officer when I see one; she let her troops think on their own which is a huge plus in my book. German/American doctrine 4TW. All Hail Britannia!

I expected Guilford to die in short order to a Zero uber shot, but I am glad he did not even if Cornelia dies, at least he might be able to carry on her work to clear Euphie’s name and avenge her death at the hands of Zero.

snapshot20070731154822.jpg
Yeah a few sparks, some grease, and boom! You ma’am are a kick ass support trooper. Go Combat Engineers!

Todo kicked fewer asses than I though he would, but just as well. I wonder what kind of miracle he still has left within him. Zero is busy saving Nunnally and Britannian reinforcements are still in bound. All command and control has been lost, and he is not one to micromanage. Regardless if he even gets out of this with the last remnants of the Black Knights he will be hunted. If that happens will he even welcome Zero back with open arms after such a debacle? I doubt that Japan is going to be a pleasant place after this battle.

I think that Zero is going to have to infiltrate Britannia on his own. It’d be the responsible thing to do since there is no way he can go back unless Suzaku and Kallen are killed or otherwise dealt with. Even then it turns out he has killed among his numerous victims, family who really did care about him and Nunnally.

snapshot20070731155010.jpg
Damn right he is my liege. Remember Suzaku, heart or head; either way Zero’s dead.

As for the last gun shot I think Kallen may have shot herself because she could not deal with having Lulu be Zero or acknowledge that Zero has been using them all. She cant’ handle the truth. Either that or she shoots Suzaku and denies all that she has heard while following Zero more loyally than before.

In any case Cecile’s hawtness just rose significantly. She is not only smart and caring, but also a competent pilot to boot. She needs to be knighted and given her own custom Knightmare next season. As for Lloyd I don’t know how to take his “Milly is going to be my wife” attitude. After all Cecile and Lloyd go way back, and his insincere tone makes it very hard to read what his intentions are. I wonder what Nina is going to do with her bomb, it might still be a dud. If not that’s a grand way to kill off the entire cast barring Lulu, Suzaku, Kallen, C2, V2, Schneizel, and Nunally.

snapshot20070731160123.jpg
Dang where was the Mexican Standoff I was hoping for…

As for Shirley, what the hell just happened with her? I mean she supports Zero despite his henchman pointing a gun right at her, WTF? That must have been one hell of Geassing. Rivalz, you suck. Sorry, but you look silly protecting the tall bombshell that is Milly-oneesama given your short stature. Lloyd has a better chance than you since you have a friend contract with Milly. As for C2 she’ll be back she survived what? Head shots, burning at the stake, stabbings, how much harm could a bit of water do?

Poor Orange-kun, man he finally kicks some serious ass, and now what, he dies. I want him to come back and perpetually fuck Lulu up. He’s the perfect random variable that Zero can never conquer.  It was fun while it lasted, too bad he doesn’t get to reunite with Villeta. Personally he’s been such a non-entity for so long I simply stopped caring or even really taking notice of how over the top it was. I was expecting him to be expendable which he was, but he lasted longer than I thought. Still despite how over the top it was I cannot help, but I feel cheated. We waited for so long and that’s how he ends up beaten by an old woman…wait that is kind of funny now that I think about it.

Lastly why is that asshole Tamaki still alive? If Cornelia dies I demand his life as well. Its only fair.

    shirley suspects that zero is lelouch, so she probably thinks that zero would not harm them (especially nanali). I agree that tamaki should be gotten rid of the 1st chance possible. he can’t follow command and can only solve problems through violent means.

    I have mixed feelings about Orange-kun. Besides I was still think about how cool Cecile-san was. Even then I cannot put his last hurrah as a disaster, or even a full blown mistake. Still those are my thoughts.

    @ryuu
    I was hoping that Tamaki would get killed, if Orange-kun killed him I would shower Orange-kun with praise as it stands he killed what 4 no name peons? Still I can’t fathom where Shirley has hidden her marbles, hopefully in season two she can actually carry a conversation.

    Can you blame Ougi for ‘taking care’ of Villetta? Tanned skin + fishnet stockings = WIN. I’d hit that.
    I am a Cornelia fanboy too. I am all for smart, mature and decisive women. CLAMP know how to draw attractive women, don’t they?
    Also, Cecile FTW. She is not a badass fighter like Cornelia, but she has that caring, motherly side which I also like.
    As for C2, I wouldn’t blame her since we still know too little of her past.
    BTW when she gave the Geass to Lulu, it’s not that she had much choice. It was either Lulu or getting captured again by the Britannian army.
    And I’m sure that Orange-kun is not dead. They can’t waste such a brilliant character without a final showdown with Lelouch.

    I agree. This episode was epically disastrous. Not in that it sucked, but a lot of characters get screwed over… like the loli princess. She’s epic. Why must they make her sad???

    My whole theory on the ending is that while Suzaku and Lulu were facing off, ready to fire their guns at any moment, Kallen interjects and fires her pistol at Suzaku.

    Suzaku, with his “survive” Geass on would naturally dodge the bullet Kallen fired. Hence, Suzaku’s attempt to shoot Lulu would be put on momentary hold as he’s dodging the bullet. That’s why there was only one gunshot… from Kallen’s pistol.

    So, basically, all three of them survive for next season.

    That or I’m just overanalyzing an *obvious* cliffhanger created to make people squirm while waiting for the next season.

  8. Posted August 2, 2007 at 11:09 am | Permalink

    @kyokii what do you think of that clip with nunali at the end?

    i cant believe they had an open ending. Cmon just show what happens already =D. But yea they definitely have to have a second season or at least an epic movie to go through the whole ending which i think would be better. I really liked this anime and how i thought of lelouch’s characteristics as wholly disgusting as the series progressed.

    in closing…good stuff =)

    @ Avalon57 The one where she kinda’ jumps up after the gunshot? I just re-watched that scene and I don’t know what to make of it. They make it seem like Lelouch was hit and Nunally is “re-acting” to his supposed “death” or injury. Another cliffhanger-element to make us think, eh?

    I love Lelouch. He’s like Light Yagami, except his principles are more well-based and developed… whereas Yagami just feels bored and claims the world is generally evil, leading to the murderous rampage with Ryuk’s notebook. I mean, he was at the top of his class in school and his family was economically well off… what else did he need? Everybody liked him and he had a good future going for him… can’t blame Light for getting corrupt by the notebook though… it’s too much power.

    Lelouch, on the other hand, was tormented. His ideal was to establish a world where he and Nunally can live his ideal of peace. After being exiled to Japan, he can’t think of anything else but to get his father back for somehow leading to the mysterious death of his mother. When C.C. “chose” him, and with his new found powers, he went on a selfish rampage like Yagami to change the world with his own hands, except… because of his motives, Lelouch is more human than Yagami.

    In the end, all that sacrifice was selfish, sure. However, you have to sympathize with Lelouch. It’s not that he really *wanted* to kill Euphie or wanted to erase Shirley’s memories. You can see regret in his eyes… he’s just made some bad choices if you choose to see it that way.

    C.C. puts it best during the epilogue… Lulu wanted to find that tiny bit of happiness that all humans seek. That’s what makes him a bad ass character that anyone can relate to somehow.

    Humans seek happiness yes. Humans usually don’t go on murderous rampages and killing their siblings who obviously cared for them in the past to find their small bit of happiness. That’s the type of character Lelouch is. I’m just not seeing where I can relate or feel pity for the guy. This episode showed he’s playing with people’s lives for selfish reasons. Not even smart reasons since Nunally has been kidnapped twice and in danger a lot more times now that he’s finding the “peaceful world” for her.

    Hopefully, Lelouch eventually has to answer for the things he has done. With Sunrise I’m doubtful though. He’s too popular.

    Cornelia may have displayed some great fighting abilities in this last battle with Zero, but in the end, she is still a loser. Her way of fighting is too conventional and she fails to Lelouche when it comes to strategy(except that one time in ep.6 I think). Lelouche beats her every time, even though he has a clearly inferior army both in quality and in quantity. The only reason why she is still alive is because of Suzaku, whom she finally chose to acknowledge after the death of Euphie, even though he saved her life several times.

    Also, Villetta is an ungrateful bitch. Even though Ougi did not handle the situation in the best possible way, he did save her life and took care of her all this time, so at least he deserves some gratitude. Also, he did not take advantage of her, because we do not know how their relationship developed – I am pretty sure she was the one who initiated it. Ougi does not seem the type of guy to force himself on a woman – he seems like a shy, proper guy. Villetta, however, felt no remorse when she shot him, and the only reason she was angry was because he’s an “eleven”. That not only makes her ungrateful, but also a racist/nationalist.

    I do agree with you concerning Orange-kun though. I think his entire character was not handled very properly. Why give the guy character development if he is going to end up dead without doing anything significant. He just managed to kill a few random grunts and did not prove any challenge to Lelouche/CC. I think his character in the last couple of episodes was a waste of air time and he could have died back when Kallen destroyed his machine and nothing much would change in the show.

    I also agree that Tamaki guy is really annoying. He’s been getting on my nerves for quite awhile now, and I wish he died in the final episode. Generally, the death count was much lower than expected, and I was disappointed by that.

    Overall, though, I think it was a great finale, and I am looking forward to the second season!

    @Tabi Karasu
    Yay I am not alone.

    @Gohan
    Well even if you will, might I suggest a medical screening prior to any such activities…

    Yeah, Kallen is over rated, and C2 is positively ancient. Maturity + Intelligence + looks = WIN.

    @Mia
    I bet a lot of women would have shot him after having mated with him. He must be a really bad lover…

    @Kyokii
    No cries of onii-chan or Zero-nii means she fails the MOE loli test. The least she could have done was to use one liners from Macross. She deserves to be disciplined. ;)

    @mikeon
    That would be the best solution, but I doubt it…Zero is going to come back whether if we want him to or not.

    @cdeee
    Yeah I have problems with Lulu’s “Nunnally’s happiness is worth the lives of billions” mentality. I suspect its because he has godlike powers, and power is very seductive. Besides i wonder how many would still like him if he had no harem…

    @darwin
    Well how could she have ever predicted that Zero had the Geass ability in the first place. While Cornelia only beat Lulu once in every other engagement she never suffered a catastrophic loss of men, and she was able to preserve her forces in numerous engagements. Lulu has the gift of Geass, and does not have to deal with the fog of war the way she has to. Lulu gets perfect information, Cornelia does not. If one knows the exact disposition of enemy forces and has the ability to plant perfect saboteurs and spies how can one be anything but victorious in battle? Lulu gets to wage war the easy way because he can set perfect traps and has perfect information. Lulu does not have to worry about friction or waging war as a matter of expedients as his plans always survive contact with the enemy. Cornelia like every other commander who is a mere mortal has to deal with the unknowns and have to sort through the confusion of battle. In this light the main question ought to be how come Cornelia has lasted so long?

    Sure she may have failed numerous times, however she is still a competent enough commander to preserve her forces as well as maintain a good deal of quality in it. Few great generals have ever had a career with out defeat, Napoleon suffered it, Rommel, Bradley, Montgomery, Slim, MacArthur, and the list goes on. Success is not final, and failure is not fatal it is the courage to continue that counts. Cornelia has built a good army that is very competent and her ability to command is great given that she is a mere mortal. Lulu has the writing staff on his side as well as a weapon of infinite treachery and deceit. She has no uber weapons of her own, she uses a mass production model. She never employs Lancelot as much as Lulu uses Guren Nishiki and Gawain. Since Gawain can take out whole armies with one shot she is at a huge disadvantage when it comes to technical superiority. No, if anything Cornelia is the one fighting with a handicap while Lulu gets to wage war every armchair general wants to wage war and real commanders can only dream of. At the very least Cornelia is a failure, she tried to stop Lulu. A loser would not even bother to try and would have expired much sooner.

    As for Villetta here is where I must again beg to differ. Villetta may have been saved but it was never Villetta in all her glory that consented to mate with Ougi. It’s like having sex with a drunk lady, sure she says yes with a horrible breath. However, were she sober would she still be saying yes? In a court of law Villetta could argue that she could not have given consent and was raped. She’d probably win too. In this light I could see why she would be pissed. Sure Ougi may have saved her, but that does not mean hes has the right to take advantage of her mental state. If a man saves a woman from dying, but rapes her at some point is the man still a hero? Should he get a get out of jail free card for his past good deed despite the fact that his later act was dishonorable? It takes two people to mate, Ougi can’t push all the blame on Villetta. Chigusa may have initiated it, but Ougi had a choice not to reciprocate given her mental state. However, he did not. Hence he is not innocent.

    At least we agree on Orange-kun and Tamaki, i hope the next season turns out well for you.

    @YouWha?!
    Well we all have a right to dream, hope it turns out to be good enough to you liking this fall.
