Last week’s episode ended in a cliffhanger; this week concludes the tale of how Michiru deals with her imminent death… or is it really imminent? What does the ring around her neck really mean? Would she become a zombie? With just enough doses of action, humor, and good looking guys, we’re told all the answers to these riddles.

Summary

zl-2-screenshot-1.jpg

A girl walks down the dark corridor in school, at night, murmuring to herself about how late she is. Suddenly, someone appears behind her, and she apologizes to the unseen person for being still in school. Something happens to her, and we see her bag dropping down to the floor.

Cut to Michiru, who is lying on her bed, under her blankets, used tissues besides her, wondering how she’s going to die. Her aunt comes in and asks her how she is, saying that they are one family after all. Chika and Shito pop in from nowhere, and after a fiasco with Michiru’s aunt and Michiru’s tentative claim that they are her friends, they stay for tea and cake. Their motive for coming, however, was to tell Michiru to meet them at the school’s graveyard at 9 pm tonight (or Chika will kill her [!]). Michiru is reluctant, and Shito tries to persuade her by telling her that she would be helping the students that have been missing these days; they were probably adducted by zombies, apparently for food.

*
Michiru: Whatever you say, I am SOOOO not leaving this room!
Chika: You really are contradicting yourself. You’re the one who say you don’t like being at this home. If you hate this home so much, then fly away from here.
*

After Chika and Shito leave, Michiru agonizes in her room before getting a phone call. Before taking the call, her aunt expresses her disapproval regarding these “bad students

Man! You gotta do something about those screenshots. They look awful. Keep the original aspect ratio.

I haven’t seen ep 2 yet, but from your comments & screencaps, it looks like another fun episode. Those odd insertion of comic moments in the midst of fight scenes, etc., are straight from the manga. They’re part of the series’ appeal for me although I can see where they would be off-putting for some viewers.

The hand switch should be explained in a forth-coming episode. There is a reason. The manga translation of the explanation was a little convoluted, so I’m not sure I fully understand it myself. But rest assured, there is a reason and hopefully the anime will cover it.

Speaking of the manga, this episode and the first one followed the manga quite closely except in one significant detail. In the manga, the school nurse is also a nun. The school the trio attend is a Christian mission school. (That explains the crosses all three wear with their school uniforms.) Christian and Jewish theology play a part in later stories, so I wonder why the anime dropped the fact that the school nurse was also a nun? I was worried that they might change the setting of the final fight scene. I’m glad that they at least kept it in the church. If for no other reason than the stained glass gives the animators a chance to use more of the nontraditional color palette that so caught my eye in episode 1. :)

Oh, I thought I was the only one who was reminded of Furuba because of the character interactions. Though, not exactly the same way it did to you. Just thought Chika and Kyo were similar. XD

Chika’s also my favorite character. He’s the only one interesting enough, imo. Haha.

Well so far in the manga, her love interest is neither of those two, in fact the love interest isn’t introduced till later. However, I smell things changing, so we shall see.

If this follows the manga, expect okay action, a relatively interesting plot, and a lot of disjointed episodes.

@ Tiberium Wolf: I do apologize if the screencaps aren’t up to the viewers’ standard. The truth is I have the hell of a time doing them, and this is the best I can do after hours of work. Unfortunately the versions I watch have this (skewed?) ratio, and it will spend more time than this technologically challenged blogger have to spare to tune it back.

If there is anything else (like choice of screencaps, monotonous colour scheme) that you don’t like, do tell me and I’ll try to change it where I can, as I can.

@ LKK: I actually really like the church scene. Unlike the previous scenes (dark corridor, fighting with ghostly hands) this scene is predominantly red. At the same time is it also quite dark, which suits the overall atmosphere. I love those stained glass personally, and they make a very interesting contrast to the blue-green-black of earlier scenes.

Regarding Christian and Jewish allusions, I did notice the crosses they wear, and hence assume that they are attending a missionary school. I would love seeing more allusions in future episodes; animes often have very interesting takes on religions.

@ Mintie: I think maybe Chika is not as implusive and baggage-filled as Kyo, although they do have similar personality and are both prone to turning chibi-funny. Chika can also be a lot more serious (and at the same time less angsty), and he is surprisingly astute. Well, more so than Kyo, IMO anyway, although that may just be open to personal interpretation. :D

@ TheoreticalString: Oh so she has another love interest? :P Should be interesting to watch. Looking at the preview, I’m guessing that the next couple episodes may be going the monster-of-the-week route. It’ll help build up characters and the world, but I do hope they will not do it for the rest of the anime.

I will derive the answer of the hand-switch question from the manga,

SOOO…

Possible…

*SPOILER*

Ready?

The answer to the hand exchange is rather… I’ll put it simply…

After the accident, it so happened that their hands were literally broken off. They make the deal with Watashimori. Watashimori attaches their hands back to their arm, but their hands were accidentally switched and so, they are stuck with this situation. Why?

Because they were already becoming zombies. It would be impossible to re-do the hand re-attachment. The rule is that they have to switch hands every hour. If they don’t, their hands rot off. Or if they stray to far from each other, their hands rot off as well. Shito and Chika need each other basically, despite the fact that they really hate each other.

I couldn’t understand why it has to be this way at first, but… it’s just a plot device. There’s nothing to contemplate, so the viewers just have to accept the fact that they have to switch hands.

Glad you guys are blogging this series!

I liked epi 2 better then epi 1, Michiru was a bit much for me in epi 1 but she’s starting to grow on me.
The posing (as mentioned here and on animesuki) I find funny, kinda shoujo aspect to a shounen style anime XD

YamiKakyuu added these pithy words on Jul 14 07 at 1:30 pm

SPOILER*********

I forgot to mention that…

They have to switch hands to use their powers, since the two boys have each others real hands.

Kyokii added these pithy words on Jul 14 07 at 1:33 pm

Yes, the anime has a very shoujo design element to it ‘cuz Peach-Pit did the original manga… desu, anyone?

In the preview, we get a glimpse of Shinku. No, that’s not Shinku…!!

@ Kyokii: Thanks, Kyokii. That really clears it up. The poor guys, having to be saddled together when they are two very distinct and different people. Although I still think that there’s more than hatred between them. I mean, part of the fun is watching them bicker with each other. I suppose the mangaka thought so as well. Forced close relations between two males is a cliche but proven device, after all.

@ YamiKakyuu: Glad to see you wander in! Do wander in more often. :D I do agree that Michiru screams a bit too many times in episode 1, not to mention her tendency to be the bullied target keeps getting on my nerves. Episode 2 clears some of those tendencies up, so I do like episode as well.

Oh yeah, the posing. That was the first thing I noticed (actually the second thing, since the first thing I noticed was the truly AWFUL OP) before anything else. Although to be honest, my eyes kind of slide over that after a while; I took screencaps of the poses in episode 1, but in episode 2 I must have gotten used to it because it doesn’t particularly strike me hard anymore. Or maybe there are just less posings in this episode. :D

Briar added these pithy words on Jul 14 07 at 7:44 pm

@Briar: I will ^_^ I actually didnt know you guys were blogging this til LKK-sensei mentioned it to me. I dont think Id been back to this blog since GH ended XD

I agree the OP is ear covering bad, but I only dislike the singing in it, if it was instrumental I wouldnt mind it. And I did notice less posing then epi 1 XD

Man, was I the only one who caught the Araiso High reference?

Right when Chika and Shito come through the window, and mockingly apologize to the nurse… In the Araiso High OVA, the two male leads always come through the window of the nurse’s office with a similar comment.

Haha, granted, that is pretty damn obscure…
