Zombie Loan Episode 1: Shinigami Eyes

zl-1-title.JPG

Just had to get this out of the way: The OP is amazingly, crazily, and totally the WORST OP I’ve ever heard. As Impz puts it (it’s just too good a quote to throw away), it sounds like “someone killed a chicken and a fox and a pig… together

    Hahaha, I still remember how you keep insisting that they are posers, but well i guess they do go with the poses a bit too much after the screencaps. I didn’t feel like it was excessive when I watched it myself but I am glad that you are blogging it (since you started fangirling about all the male seiyuus). Let me try to apply my 3Ps to this.

    First on, for production values, it is very high. Kuwashima Houko, the seiyuu of Shuurei in Saiunkoku Monogatari is definitely turning out to be the star of this series. If anything, Zombie Loan has a huge cast that is close to a star status. I am amazed at the seiyuus that they have employed for this, giving this series a fresh and definitely strong push.

    The graphics is definitely decent, even though it is nothing to roar about. I must add that the art work released before the anime did was much worse, which is surprising. Art work is generally much better so I applaud the anime series.

    On plot depth, it is rather interesting, with some plot issues such as why they became hunters of undead, how Michiru has the eyes of the shinigami, the agency’s development, and perhaps the eventual antagonist. All this seems a bit standard shounen fare, but who knows.

    On personality, I really like Michiru because she is so ditsy but it is clear that she is a troubled girl who has lost her parents and saw them die in front of herself or something. The other two guys did not leave me with any strong impressions but I do wonder if there would be any romantic touches. I swear Chika will have some romance. Shito (Oh shi-) seems to be a rather complex character too, with his mood swings swinging faster than the plates.

    All in all, it’s a competent first episode and Briar’s review saved me the effort of writing a summary for it. Yay!

    I enjoyed episode one, especially for the voice-acting and the look. The story could go either way, but I feel some real personality and relationship there, anyway.

    And I loved the OP. The best musically of the new season so far, for me, even though I’m normally more into gentle than rough. Seemed like good commercial punk, to me, just smooth enough and no smoother.

    Nice… I can’t wait to start watching this myself. Must wait for the subs though ;_;

    Wow, now, i am fabulously surprised. This is the first time that I have heard from anyone that they like the OP. Everyone seems to have their hair pulled out listening to it. Hmm, queer huh. ^_^

    @ Impz: See, I told you they are posers. And I produced evidence. But again, I would mind a lot more if they are ugly bums; since they aren’t, I can accept it. :P

    I agree with you with regards to the 3Ps. This anime is seriously all stars, and in terms of storytelling and characters it is quite gripping for a first episode. I still don’t feel much for Michiru, although I do agree that her situation with her adopted family as well as her possible pain at watching her real parents progressive deaths are quite touching. However, I do like Chika. I mean, he has white hair and he’s voiced by Kenichi Suzumura! What more can you ask??

    Ok, and he has an interesting personality, and his money grubbing habits are kind of cute. And he has a sword. I like swords. :D

    About the only thing I have to say about Shito is his name. I keep forgetting to put in the “o” to the word…

    @ hashihime: Are… you…… …… serious? :O You really like the OP? I guess we all have different tastes, but… … … seriously? O_O I do agree with regards to the voice acting (Kenichi Suzumaru and Takahiro Sakurai both have such yummy, yummy voices. *swoons* I also enjoy particularly their interaction (well, Chika’s and Shito’s interaction, anyway). There’s a lot of (non-romantic) chemistry there.

    @ Shokkeru: Definitely. :D I don’t feel so cheated by this summer season after all. There is something to watch after all.

    @ Kimmie: I know entirely what you mean! I’m fangirling all over the place because of those yummy, sexy voices (especially Kenichi)… and Houko Kuwashima herself voices a couple of my favourite characters.

    @Impz — Lol. Not the first time I’ve been the odd one out. It’s especially strange since I don’t normally like punk. But this is sort of smoothed-out punk, so I find it okay. I think the guy actually has a good voice for this kind of music. The group is called “The Birthday” and consists of members formerly with Rosso and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant, neither of which I’ve heard. I think the lead singer is Chiba Yuusuke.

    i realy liked the animetion

    im looking for the subed version can someone tell me where i can find it?

  9. Posted July 5, 2007 at 8:48 am | Permalink

    @Mike: Read our disclaimer :)

    @Hashihime: Hahah, so it seems. Well, I guess it is perhaps the fact that I really dislike punk music, no matter how soft or hard the voice is. It just feels to me like someone screaming seriously out of tune, and I have huge doubts on the good quality of it. It might be probably due to my myopic and inexperienced view due to my lack of exposure on such genres of music.

    The manga-basis for this anime was done by Peach Pit, the group of two manga-ka who did Rozen Maiden. Surely, Zombie Loan will be interesting.

    If the anime follows the manga as well as I hope it will, then the series has very good potential, no matter how “cliche” it seems to be.

    The anime (like the manga) picks up after the brief background foundation is laid, so don’t give up on it. Personally, I felt the anime is an interesting rendtion of the manga, enough to keep me watching it.

  14. Posted July 5, 2007 at 7:40 pm | Permalink

    Hmm I will have to check this out.

    Hubby-sama picked up DearS (the manga and the anime) and I liked it.

    I’ve read the first volvume of the manga and have to say I enjoyed it so I would definitely like to give this a go.

    Especially since Darker Than Black got licensed and I can no longer watch it.

    (Wails, but then cheers up at the thought, that eventually it will be out to buy\, or rent. I love Netflix)

    @ Kyokii: Yes, that and the seiyuus pretty much gaurantee that this would be pretty good. I don’t read the manga, but from the reviews others have said it is quite good.

    @ DJ: Yay! You are picking up Zombie Loan? :D It’s too bad about Darker than Black, but it will also open the market for anime fans and for anime producers to earn more. Anyway, Zombie Loan has quite good looking bishies and a competent story, so even without the yummy voices, it’s well worth picking up.

    The opening episode really caught my attention. So much so that I jumped aheard and read through some of the manga because I didn’t want to wait until next week to see what happens. I’m looking forward to read your take on the series as it progresses.

    LKK!! Haven’t seen you around for such a long time! I’m really, really flattered you came in here and will be coming back. :D From the sound of your comment on the manga the following stories would be very, very interesting; I’m definitely going to be looking forward to them.

    o_o;;
    I have to say, Shito seems cruel near the end. But nevertheless, it’s turning out to be a smash. One episode down, and I already want to watch more. Great blog by the way. Keep them coming xP.

    Cute guys, ditsy girl, I’m trying very hard to like the opening, trying and failing, the plot’s interesting, love the way they presented it. Looking forward to more. =D!

    I dunno…I actually didn’t mind the OP at all. The song reminded me a LOT of HT from Trigun, VERY similar guitar licks…just with lyrics. It’s pretty much exactly how’d I’d expect HT to sound if it had vocals. I’m actually surprised nobody has made this comparison yet.

    While the OP wasn’t bad, I thought the ED song Chain Ring was actually really good.

    Personally, my favorite part of the entire anime is the opening song. But then, I was raised on Heavy Metal, and The Birthday reminds me a bit of the blues sound that was so prevalent in the Led Zepplin songs, although this song is considerably harder. Don’t know if I care for the anime yet, the whole cute guys changing hands kinda grosses me out, but personally, I love the song, and think it suits the anime.
