Well, after the initial outburst of blogging, I realize that unless a show really kept my interest, I generally cannot bother writing episodic summaries unless there is a huge interest in it. Nevertheless, I still think that creating a list such as this is important. Let’s give an example: Even though I placed Seirei no Moribito, Kissdum, Bokurano and some random other anime under review list, I eventually kept Bokurano only, but Seirei no Moribito summaries will be making a comeback on the blog soon enough when I have the time, but do not count on it.

That said, here are the top three picks that I am likely to blog about. Of the three, I am very sure that I will be blogging on Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai while the other two are probably watching. As you can tell, I am not that crazily excited over the new season, even though there are a few series that I will watch (but not blogged since others will like Zero no Tsukaima and School days).

Here’s a short review and the pull points for me on my top three to blog!

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

higurashi2nd.jpg

Story synopsis

The sequel after the slasher horror/thriller anime last year, Higurashi comes back with three arcs (probably 24 episodes then) to explain more about the Oyashiro’s curse and cover grounds that are somewhat left wide open in the first season. If it sticks to the previous style, the three arcs will represent different stories of a parallel timeline, with most of the members like Rena, Kenichi, Rika and Shion all back to cut each other more back in the action. Yakusamashi-hen is an original series for the anime series only, and Studio Deen is still the animation company for this series.

For those who is not in the know for the first season, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai is about the main character, Keiichi Maebara, who moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which consist mostly of card and board games. However, after four years of the annual Watanagashi Festival, a local festivity to commemorate and give thanks to the local god, Oyashiro-sama, a person will be killed and another will be missing. People said that it is a curse by the local god, but is it really the supernatural?

Thoughts

The first series, despite all its flaws, is a whole thinking bag of its own. I have blogged about this for the first season, where inconsistencies in graphics, plot loopholes and confusion tends to reign quite a bit. Nevertheless, the outcome of the series is a beautifully crafted thriller where you start to figure out what is true (or whether what you think is true is actually true). Higurashi is one of the thriller flicks that will make your brain go all confused trying to decipher the hints and getting rid of the red herrings.

To add, it is also critical to note that the fanservice of Rika and many others is always a good pull, and having enough violent blood never fails to capture audiences. Hiugrashi is a mix of a very interesting genres, and it is perhaps my first pick of the season. I like to think.

Baccano

Story synopsis

This story is based in 1930s America around the railroads. It is regarding the search for the ‘immortal liquor’ that will grant immortality to the person who quenches on the liquid. The search is conducted by a bunch of queer and bizarre characters such as alchemists, lunatics, immortals, terrorists and the Mafia, each for their personal purpose. It is noted that the setting of the anime series will be quite dark and crazy, with good action and a steampunk context to go along with it.

Thoughts

I have no clue what this is about but the artwork of the series, as well as the screenshots for the PV do interest me because I always like a quirky story that is somewhat like the capture of the Holy Grail. If I have to be lame and label this, I see it as Full Metal Alchemist with a more cyber (steam) punk mix where the characters are larger than life.

I must say that with the looks of it, the action part of the show might be a bit too overwhelming for me to blog, but it’s nevertheless a series that I will take a very close eye on.

Doujin work

doujinwork.jpg

Story synopsis

A very eye-catching title. It is about a girl making her debut in the doujin creation field with the help of her experienced friends. Every aspect of what it’s like to be an doujinshi artist is covered, in Hiroyuki-san’s uniquely perversed comedy fashion. A 4-koma manga adaptation, it seems to be extremely popular in Japan.

Thoughts

Yes, I have very little information on my story synopsis because there is hardly anything to dig out. Nevertheless, the art work is spunky and cute, both plus points for Impz when he picks anime to watch and follow. I generally like 4-koma series since they are often episodic in nature, with a quirky feeling in the show that will be rather interesting to take note of. I wish I have more information but that’s what anime viewing is all about: the surprise of a good or bad show when it slowly reveals its shape.

The job of a doujin creation field is definitely otaku orientated, and somewhat appealing to the crowds who like Genshiken as well as Lucky Star. It is perhaps a show that might impress quietly.

I will have another list soon on the shows to catch and the bloggers that might be blogging on it so to get your information fix!

;_; die in a hole?….bunny style? :P Well, i personally find the premise to be really promising, even though the eventual result is somewhat disappointing, but still a good thriller. I know I enjoyed it quite a bit ^^ but to each his own.

So, would it be fair to say that we’re about to be treated to a remake of Comic Party with a gender reversal?

I think your picks are pretty good. I maintain the only interesting thing about Higurashi was watching people go crazy, which is always good for a laugh in my camp. Machine that strips off fingernails?! LOLOL.

I’m trying to temper my expectations for Baccano; it seems like it has potential to be the outstanding show of the summer.

Doujin Work I think will either be really good or really bad, depending on whether it’s more like Genshiken or more like Lucky Star. For some people this is win-win I guess. All I know is: it has a character named Osana Najimi.

@Drm: Hanyuu who @_@;;; *confused*

@Pablo: there’s a happy ending? I thought that there is no happy ending for Higurashi, with them stuck in the cycle forever. Now, this is interesting and I have heard from the gamers that it is way better, the story line that is.

@Author: perhaps so, even though I honestly have not gotten my hands on Comic party. The popularity of the 4koma and the blog means also that the series might be good enough to hit mainstream curves.

@Mia: It initially freaked me out until I got too engrossed into thinking about the situation about the various possibilities of the show. Well, I guess the only scene that caught me out is the “nail scene”. I closed my eyes and fast forwarded it.

@Seth: Hmm, Higurashi is quite about watching people go all crazy, since it is perhaps the face distortion part of the series that never fails to amaze people. Don’t remind me of the machine. I still have nightmares over that scene. The smart thing is not to show it and let people hear the horror, because it is more painful and more imagined in that way.

Baccano’s artwork and play seems to be quite interesting, but with only 13 episodes slated (correct me if i am wrong), it might be a tad too short to give us the impact it wants. I believe that it will be a bag of fast tempo stuff on the word go.

For Doujin work, i have a feeling that it’s more of Lucky Star, which is really not a bad thing in itself. Still, 4koma translation work tends to be above average in quality most of the time. I cannot think of one that really sucks.

@impz : you reminded me the WOrst part …i was freak’n scared when i saw it , also i deleted the episode on my pc coz i dun wanna ever see it again bleh~ f r e a k y

Great news regarding Seirei no Moribito! :) Since I’ve kind of lost track of Bokurano since I went on holiday and back, SaiMono is practically the only constantly blogged anime here. I would really want more.

(Impz, did you watch episode 11? I remember saying waaaaay back that there’s and/or will be romance between Barsa and Tanda (sp). Let’s just say that a particular scene in episode 11 has concreted that thought.)

Out of the three, I think the only one I may pick out to watch is Baccano. If only because the guy on the right is quite good looking. :D The fact that it’s 13 episodes actually makes me look forward to it more. I’ve found that shorter animes tend to be tighter in terms of plot lines and story telling. I truly do not like never ending animes that go on and on and on… and on and on and on… Give me a short, precise, well executed anime instead.

@Mia: yes, I have heard too that there might be a few more @_@ scenes for the coming 2nd season. I wonder how ermm bad it will be.

@Briar: yes, i just blogged and posted about Barsa and Tonda and I found it really interesting that the romance between the two is possible after the events. To be honest, I have very little expectations of the coming season as there is really little for me to catch. Nevertheless, I share your feelings on short and precise anime series as well.

I hate anything that goes beyond 39 episodes, unless it’s reallu good (like saimono)

Impz added these pithy words on Jun 19 07 at 7:45 am

I like supernatural stuff so I might have to check out the first season of Higurashi.

Boccano interested me since I’ve really been digging Darker than Black and I LOVE FMA.

And I can’t remember the name of it, but there is an interesting looking Samurai one coming up too.

Are there any clips of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai online? I can’t find any, but it sounds great. How bloody is it on a scale of one-to-ten (ten being a bloodbath)?
